But I'm not alone in this particular episode joining me in the co-host seat tonight is the official fact checker of this show
And a man that believes in the power of the ocean because he is a certified scuba diver.
You may know him as fond don go but his mama name him Don Ford I'm going to call him Don Ford welcome sir.
I love a scuba diving.

I'm not used to this mic here so let me go like that.
They're done, they're all the exact same.
Hey, no this is the Chad mic usually.
We're only got the dance is the lady of the house and someone who actually knows how to use a microphone.
She is general welcome friend.
That's how you do that. You talk right into the mic.
It's not better. It's a little better.
Okay, because I turn it more towards it.
It's unidirectional.
Whatever we do one of these it is to review something and this is no exception.

I'm probably killed that.
It's a directs a true story about Tammy Ashcraft based on her book Tammy Oldham Ashcraft.
It is called a drift.
Towards that this whole thing?
Yes sir.
I totally almost did the wrong one.
We love our vendors.
They take care of us so that we can do cool stuff like this and tell you about cool stuff.
So you can make the best possible decisions for your entertainment dollar.
Like I said this is based on a true story.
Here's what you need to know.
You've got the Shailene Woodley and the Sam Claflin.
That's the list.
Because everybody else you know doesn't get more than 5 or 10 minutes of screen time.
It runs about an hour 40.
She is one of these people.
She's just gotten out of school and she's just decided she's just going to roam the earth like cane and kung fu.
And she literally says the words.
You know what?
I just make enough money so I can go to the next place.
So she winds up in Trinidad.
Is that Thailand?
Thailand.
The kids.
She's in Thailand and she's just working on boats man.
Just hanging out.
1983.
And just by happenstance, she meets Richard Sharp played by the Sam Claflin.
He was in the Hunger Games.
That's mainly I remember before.
It's no white.
I choose not to remember the color.
So they start to get along.
And you know kids doing what kids do.
Kids just trying to make a way in this world.
They find out that he runs into some friends of theirs on the island.
And he asks them to take their boat back to San Diego for them.
Is that you or me that was beeping?
Because I shouldn't be beeping because I'm on vibrate.
I'm off as well.
It wasn't me.
That was very strange.
So he says I'll do it.
But she's coming with me.
They're going to take us back.
She's from San Diego so she's not real keen because she's not ready to go home yet.
And then they get on the boat.
And they wind up getting involved with one of the biggest most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history.
And wind up about 1,500 miles off course.
It's just like Don said.
Remember 1983.
GPS wasn't real strong yet.
A lot of things were done manually.
With sextance and compasses and things of that nature.
There was Hurricane Raymond which was a category 4.
Which is up there in the ocean.
Well you can't go any higher than a 5.
I was just thinking it's finally one of those times where I can use the word sextant.
Exactly.
So this is an interesting case study.
This film.
Because I recently reviewed a film that you can either go back and listen to iTunes exclusive 384.

Where I said the words I don't like movies that are told in flashback.
It's what ruined Carlitos way for me.
I knew the ending of the beginning.
This film is told mostly in flashback but it works here.
Because you don't necessarily start with the end of the film.
You kind of start and Don you probably would agree with me.
You start about two thirds of the way through the film in the beginning.
Yeah it starts up right when she wakes up after the hurricane.
That's all we're going to say.
You know from the previews there's a hurricane.
Right.
So really that's where the film starts.
And then we go back and we talk about her story from the beginning as she shows up into Thailand and meets him and everything else.
But they do come back to current back and forth.
But it's not done in a way and Don and I'm going to ask your opinion here too.
Because I know that you're not a fan of films like this.
Sometimes it all depends.
Because you've said it before and you've said in the past that it just got too confusing.
I think the way they did it here wasn't in a very confusing way.
You knew when it was flashback and you was real life.
Well it's all the way life.
Real time.
Real time.
Because when it's real time you know the boat is you see the boat it's kaboost.
To say anything beyond that and that goes back you know it's if they're on Thailand you know it's a flashback.
If they're going out on a leisurely cruise you know it's flashback and it tells that story timeline.
It even goes back to the time when the hurricane starts hitting.
And the boat's still on good shape.
So when you see the boat in bad shape versus good shape or other times you know it's flashback.
And they didn't have to change the way it was shot.
Like you knew okay now we're still telling more of the story to get us to this point.
And see when there's something major that you know is going to happen.
Like the post hurricane or hurricane.
I kind of like having that at the front versus okay what is this leading to?
We already know this is going to happen.
So you know it's going to happen having it right there.
And then that's the only time I like the flashback and flash forward situation is instead of constantly building up to where it's like wait this was the big thing.
And it's only the last 20 minutes of the film.
And let me say this don't go to IMDB.
You can go to IMDB.
Don't go to the trivia because there are spoilers there.
Yeah.
That will pop up on you at a very for an opportunity.
Now for me I was glad I read said spoilers which I don't normally say
because it gave me a chance to kind of study what was going on in the film.
Especially if you know the story of I don't you don't you didn't go in.
And I recommend this is kind of like bomb city.
Great.
The less you know going in the better the film is going to be.
I highly recommend not reading up on this.
Know as little as possible when you go in to see the movie.
Because knowing nothing I think enhances it.
Versus if I knew the story.
You know what I'm saying?
Yeah.
I just like I didn't see got the spoilers.
I just kind of have.
Yeah.
You talk about photography.
My brother.
Oh.
First couple minutes you see her surfing during one of the flashback scenes.
And what do they say?
Three hardest things to shoot with are animals kids in in the water.
And there's one scene that's under under water and you see her in the waves move.
This filming cinematography blew me away.
It was beautiful.
There's so many scenes when it's real time when she's having to go over the boat in.
Let's say just do some repairs on the boat and she does it you know underwater.
Well she's tied to the boat.
Some of those scenes photography everything.
The look was beautiful.
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.

That's kind of sort of our website but you'll get there eventually.
Yeah.
This was one of the best visually movies I've seen in a long time.
You've seen some big movies coming up for tons of recently.
And how they're able to do that on water.
Because they filmed this 12 miles out when they filmed this.
So this is on the ocean and I'm sorry you cannot predict mother nature or the ocean.
And like I said this wasn't one of those.
We're just going to get a sound stage in a tank.
They literally filmed this 12 miles offshore.
We're sailing in Woodley City in an interview.
There were times where it was just me and Sam and the director and the cinematographer.
Because everybody else was seasick.
So Don's absolutely right.
Visually good.
God, it's beautiful.
Is it going to make me want to beach vacation?
Well, not a yachting vacation.
No, no beach.
Yes, I would say that yes and there's a scene at the beach while they're doing a flashback.
Where they go in a leisure cruise to some beautiful areas.
It's like, oh, that's an included island.
Yeah, I mean beautifully.
Oh, everything visually was beautiful.
Not across the ocean just staying with land inside.
Another thing I loved about this film.
Realistic, realistic, realistic.
There's some brutal moments in this.
Let's be honest.
I'm going to warn the empire.
I'm not going to say to be spoiler free.
But it talks about graphic.
It gets graphic.
Yeah, it gets graphic.
And that's real life.
This is what happens in real life.
And when you're at sea and you're stranded and you're getting dehydrated and sunburned and all that stuff.
And this is a hard time trying to survive.
This doesn't pull any punches.
This tells like, this is what these people probably went through.
Agreed.
Now, all that being said.
There's something that I think you and I differ on.
Because there is a downside to this for me.
And for me, a little.
I could see your point and I know what you're going to say.
I love this story.
I think the script ends up carrying and compensating for this.
But I never bought their chemistry.
Both great actors.
But I never bought their chemistry with each other.
It just didn't click for me.
Could it be that way because it was a newer relationship rather than...
Because it sounds like they just met and did this.
Could that have been part of what they were trying to convey in the acting?
Possibly.
They were going to have...
They originally trying to get Miles Teller on this from Whiplash.
The great Miles Teller.
And when she worked with him like three or four times already.
But he wasn't able to do the film due to scheduling conflicts.
So they put this other guy in.
And if it would have been Miles Teller, maybe a different story on that aspect.
I just thought I'd throw that hat out there.
And I'm not saying anything bad about that clown.
Yeah, I'm not saying anything bad about him.
I don't know.
I just...
Maybe if it was a different actor, it would be different.
I just never felt...
Like, I wasn't like...
I didn't feel like they even liked each other.
I just didn't feel like there were just two kids in love
and just traveling the world together.
They never clicked for me.
Okay.
They're...
Again, both great actors, both great performances.
But it just never got to the point where I was like,
Oh, yeah.
These kids are trying to make it happen.
Nothing.
But for me, I think the time of the film was right.
It's about the right time length.
But it's always going to be a solid two.
And I was like, oh, because...
I mean, it's...
It's very slow.
We're leaving that time.
You know, two hours.
Okay, and I have to ask the two of you.
Because, you know, this will factor in.
Mm-hmm.
It's a movie involving water.
Mm-hmm.
Did they do the small drink?
Are they going to be okay with a normal sized drink?
Are they going to miss part of the movie?
Because they got a bigger drink.
I got the large drink, I was fine.
Okay.
Hour 40.
And you can't really clock that with Don,
because Don always finds a way to take a break anyway.
Yeah.
So...
Well, I'm just...
I was fine.
Yeah.
No, it wasn't just like...
No.
Sometimes when there's waterfalls and things...
No, no, I totally agree.
No, I hear you.
I hear you.
No, nothing like that.
But no, I mean, I guess that's my only issue.
But the script is so strong that it made up for it.
And it didn't bother me as much.
I mean, it could have.
So, I mean, like I said...
That's how good this film is, because it made me kind of be like cool with it.
I kind of see your point and maybe agree just to tad.
Mm-hmm.
And maybe Miles would have been better if he would have been able to do the role
who knows, because they've already worked so many times together in the past.
But there were some scenes I'm just going to say that in current time where
I thought I saw the relationship.
I really did.
And that's trying to be spoiler free.
You are trying to be spoiler free.
Very, very spoiler free.
You're doing good.
Yeah.
But a lot of scenes passed in current.
I did see the relationship, especially in current time.
Hmm.
I did.
And I don't want to say it down the air, because then I totally spoiled this stuff.
But...
Yeah, please do not spoil anything about the film.
Yeah.
But I could kind of maybe see that.
But still, I loved it.
I really cannot find...
I was surprised on this, because my kind of mood going in.
My bar wasn't the highest on this.
And after this, I was just visually blown away.
The story was great.
It wasn't unrealistic.
It was true to life.
There's nothing wrong.
I can find with this film.
All right.
General, many other questions that you have for getting to the final analysis?
No.
I think I'm good.
All right.
Do we do the final analysis on this show?
We're not going to give you a thumbs up, thumbs down.
We're not going to give you numbers, letters.
We're not going to give you, like, sales, anything like that.
Two questions.
Question number one is, would we see this film again?
If the answer's no, then we're done here.
But if the answer's yes, then the follow-up question is,
how far are we willing to go to do so?
Here's from the best of the best of the worst of the best.
Here's how it rolls.
Full price at a theater, down to a twilight showing,
down to a matinee showing, down to early morning on a Saturday,
down to second one at the dollar theater,
down to actually leaving our house to get it from red box,
down to streaming on an Netflix, down to cable.
Dawn.
That would be you, sir.
Yes.
Would you see a drift again?
That's a way for you to answer that question.
Yes, I will definitely see how far are you willing to go?
I'm giving this coveted.
Wow.
Yeah.
You're going full borrower.
Visually, in real life, I'm giving this coveted.
I would see it again.
But I think I'd sit it at about,
I'd leave the house to get it from red box.
Okay.
I just don't know that this deserves the theater experience
necessarily.
If you have a decent home theater system,
you'll get the same out of it that you wouldn't
a theater in a film like this.
There's nothing.
I visually beautiful.
Oh, they did a great job.
They did a great job.
Visually, I think in the theater would really enhance,
especially the scenes with the underwater and stuff like that.
That's why I'm easily saying the theater easily.
Baltasar Comar Corps directs a drift.
