home game welcome my name is Rob I'm the executive producer of the clubhouse podcast and I know a little
factoid about our next film that nobody else in the studio knows and I would bet money on it sitting in the
co-host chair is the lady of the house and she is spent a lot of time recently learning as much as she
can about our sport because it's part of the other show we do she's general welcome friend hello
everyone so glad you're back with us and routing out the days is the official fact checker of sooner
a gator productions and a man who may like saltwater but he's never been called a redneck you may know
is Igboonu but his mama name I'm Don Ford I'm a calm Don Ford Hey brother yo yes I have okay I don't
get assumptions hey here's a thing you're not you won't the bet that I bet money I wouldn't know
your little fact right uh-huh but you won't bet beyond my Miami Steelers exactly okay remember I make
bets I can win okay whenever we do one of these it is to review something and this is no exception
first time but first time co-directors of a feature but longtime collaborators and co-writers Tyler
Nielsen and Michael Schwartz bring us the peanut butter falcon all right for a start this whole thing yes
I got thank Carol and everybody gave her Smith and USA film for the invite I am so happy that we
get to talk about one of Carol's films because we don't get to talk about their films very much
anymore yeah you know and but they do such an amazing job we love our vendors they give us so much
opportunity to do stuff in advance we can talk to the empire about them so they can make the best
possible decisions for their entertainment dockler and I'm gonna tell Jackson that he cannot reach
into the computer I don't know what he's trying to do oh hey so here's what you need to know
Zach got Sagan plays Zach he is a young man living with Down syndrome he's in his early 20s
and because he is a ward of the state he's fine he is placed in a retirement home because that's
the only place the state knows to put him he's roommates with a guy named Carl the great Bruce
Dern the great the great and so he spends a lot of his time watching old VHS tapes of professional
wrestling already in and in these tapes he sees the saltwater redneck played by the great Thomas
Hayden Church who will always be lowal from wings for me and he decides that he wants to go to this
wrestling school that the saltwater redneck runs which is a little ways away from where he lives
but he lives in this nursing home so he breaks out and starts on his adventure to find this wrestling
school and as his journey begins he meets up with Tyler played by the great shadow who was kind
of on the run himself he's got some of his own issues so they end up teaming up to try to find him
this wrestling school as Tyler's on his way to Florida now all this is going on you've got Eleanor
Eleanor played by the great decoded Johnson she is his social worker she's been tasked to find
him and bring him back to the nursing home because he is a word of the state and there you go
just barely an hour and a half on this thing so you've got pro wrestling you've got a heartfelt
story you got a road trip we're good so far you guys saw this about a week before I did
I actually know what more than a couple of weeks and you guys actually got to see it with the
directors yes they showed up at your at your screening all I can say is I I had a recliner at my
screening okay that's what I got I'm just not even going to bury it I love this movie I love this
film I truly truly love this film and you know we don't have to all individually go we can talk
about this as a group because this is a group discussion that's why I like when we do these because
it's a discussion not everybody doing their own thing because if you want to read our own individual
things you can just read our written reviews at www.theclubhousepodcast.com that's our website so
done I think I think if I remember what some of the things you and I've talked about about this
film because this is one of the very few times in a review you didn't talk about the length yeah I
thought it was paced perfectly oh yeah perfect timing watch gauge was 40 minutes oh really
I was going to say 40 minutes we were over a third of the week done by the time I looked at my watch
now there are a lot of wonderful things about this film which I really love which I kind of want
to go into multiple things on but I want to say that it was really great to have the directors there
and try to get the word out about this film now I understand why and one of the questions that
was asked done by me I was able ask a different question about I'm going to say a certain cameos
which were incredible great cameos we're not going to talk about them because I didn't know about
them going in and when it happened I was very happy and I want people to be happy too exactly
but they they somebody said why pro wrestling because Zach liked pro wrestling in real life that
real life Zach who basically they said he's working he works in a movie theater and people
are seeing him from the trailers now it's like hey it's kind of cool that you know they're going
to see Zach so do you want the little thing that I know that you guys don't what's that he has
officially been invited to be a guest of WWE for WrestleMania 36 oh I knew that read that today
no he didn't because you didn't say that one of the things we got to hear before the movie started
from the directors was that they are friends with Zach they grew up together and you mentioned
that in your written review as well I did and Zach wants to be a movie star and so they all
decided to make their own movie and I'm like what great friends another cool thing about Zach
that I found with watching the movie is he goes I am Zach I am down syndrome I have he says I am
down syndrome when he introduces himself to someone and I have a feeling that probably is true to him
I don't think that was just a line in the movie with how he delivered it so comfortably but this
I really really enjoyed this film and I'm so glad you saw it and liked it I was hoping
it just there was something about I was like man I wish Rob was here I wish Rob was here I said
when I wrote my review that this movie has really come at a really good place in a really good time
because historically August has always been a very rough month for me just the way the planets
line up or whatever and I've been in kind of a rough place lately with a lot of things that are
going on and so I went into this I knew there was a pro wrestling element to it so I was you know
it's what the cheap pop cast is founded on so and I've been a fan of this sport since I was
knee high to a grasshopper and I knew it was it it was an adventure film so I was like you know what
I'm a definitely shot I was surprised at the PG 13 rating given some of the language in this
to see that was PG 13 was a little bit shocking for me but I'm glad because this is a film that I
think that that families can go to together and a great supporting cast oh yeah you've got John
Hawks who you might remember as Kenny Powers brother from East down and down Dern Bruce Dern of
course John Bernthal is in this yellow wolf for the kids with the clothes and the hair he's in this
and it's just and it really and you go back to the three principles in this and Don you talked
about this as well in your review yeah they're looked like a genuine love between Dakota Johnson
and Shadow and Zach yeah there's a genuine chemistry there yeah I thought the real they really
meshed well in this thing and the thing that we also learned from the directors is that
of all the lines that Zach did were adlibs which made the film even better a minute more
again yeah when I read that in your videos like you know what that that kind of it doesn't makes it
more organic now and it works and Shia and Dakota have the skill set to work in that kind of
environment but yeah there are scenes between um Shia LaBouffe and Zach and it very much feels like
they've got a friendship for life I I can see some event at some time that Zach gets invited to
hang out with his friend it's something you know cool film related um I can just see that happening
and it was nice to see Thomas Hayden Church because I'm so good in this I've met him now have
you really his he has family here in Dallas okay and I was in my 20s and I was at a bar and I was
meeting someone for the first time and the guy was kind of being a jerk and you know Thomas is
over with his friends but they're kind of over here in this guy and Thomas sends the waitress over
to get me and pulls me over to their has me come over to their table and he's like look do you
want us to help get you a ride do you want us to help you know call you a cab do stories like that
and it was I mean he was like I realized you probably don't want to take off with me but you don't
need to leave with that guy I don't I don't like that idea and he probably doesn't even remember
this happening but it's just one of those moments um I feel like he would though he seems like
that kind of guy that would remember these things I don't know it was very impactful to me though
that somebody else was watching out for me and one of his friends walked me to my car so the guy
didn't follow me into my car I had my own car nice but it was it was quite it was quite nice to have
you know someone who's trying to hang with his family and not be noticed notice there's a situation
that maybe he could step in and help out done yeah I like to see that one thing I like about the
this film is it's very simplistic but with some good supports in it and this film I think broke a
lot of rules by just being a film telling about the journey nothing else it didn't have to have
all this possessed and it's just a story of guys living off the land traveling to go somewhere
they both have a a place where they want to end up at of course Dakota's role of course trying
to find them but I really love that thing in a good film I always say this if there's a film
that can make me happy make me sad make me laugh make me cry and make me mad all in a good way
that's a good film and this film did that and like the scenes where to say jump off that's what
that's makes that makes me mad but there was a nice payoff to that yeah of course there is but
that's one thing films that they could do that very in a very good way not to try to get a cheap
emotion it's just two guys going and let's just have a film about their journey nothing more nothing
we have to add this we have to have that no it's just I think even the subplots were there give you
enough background on the characters that it doesn't overpower it and and you mentioned that too
and I like that that you've got subplots but those subplots are necessary to the main plot they're
just they're not there just to be there but broke a lot of rules which I really like about it
it's got that indie any film feel too which I dug and there were some neat I got to call them
like a national geographic scene showing the land and the wildlife and oh both of you mentioned
the cinematography yeah it was it was really really neat to see some of that because it you know
it gives you a chance to process what you've been watching without taking you out of the movie
and a wonderful soundtrack it's it surprised me the fact about you brought up the scenery and thank
you for that is that I thought this was taking place when I first started going I thought it's
taking place in like Louisiana no this takes place the film takes place in Carolina and technically
filmed in Georgia but still you wouldn't think I also get that land there's no way I think it'd
be Georgia Carolina I thought okay we're in Louisiana I know that's beautiful I mean but that land
with the demolished and the crap fishing and all that I'm thinking just beaches beaches not a bunch
of wet land I feel like we should take a vacation up that area of the country I think you'd really
dig it yeah yeah I'm a beautiful soundtrack I'll let you come for the trip but yeah I'll do okay
talk to me at about 30 years yeah we're his bank account says now yeah thank you of America is
saying that's a hard pass okay anything else we want to talk about before we get to the final
analysis on this let me ask both you what's the one thing that you would change if you were the
director the party change it yeah the one thing you didn't like if they had a fault if anything
I don't know that there is I liked as the film built to its climax I thought it was going one
way and it went another way which I really dug about it because it there was there was even a couple
of moments at at that scene that I was like okay is this oh no we're gonna go this way okay
fair enough and I dug that about it but I don't know that there's anything I would change
necessarily you didn't like there's nothing I didn't like I really really truly enjoyed this film
what about you Jen same question um I'll talk to you after show about what I would change because
I don't want to give anything like I understand anything for you don't know I can't think of
anything all right well then let's get to the final analysis we do the final analysis on the show
not going to give you thumbs up thumbs down letter grades numbers turn buckles anything like that
two questions question number one is what we see this film again the answers know that we're
done here the answers yes the follow-up question then becomes how far will we willing to go to see it
from top of the list to the bottom of the list full price of the theater down to a twilight show
down to a matinee down to early morning on a weekend down to second one at the dollar theater
down to going and renting it from somewhere down to streaming it and down to cable down let's
start with you would you see the peanut butter falcon again oh definitely what you thinking get
that cash register I'm talking full coveted does everybody's got a price
coveted this my there's a good chance this is gonna make my top 10 if not a metal general
would you see this again I would how far do I want to go I would probably be twilight just because
I don't like to be out late not because the price there enough and I would make sure to encourage
friends to join me so they can enjoy this yes and what what length go see it go see it now go see
it often go see it again bring your friends bring their friends bring people you don't like
bring people you do like because this film is wonderful it is wonderful on every level
