Let's talk about what's going on
We are in the cafeteria at Garland High School in Garland, Texas
For the 18th is I think this is 18. Oh 19th annual
Real owl cinema film festival
For those of you that may be hearing this particular edition of the show for the first time
This is something we have now done nine. This is our ninth time. Did I get that right? I think so don't check. Yeah, Don is saying nine
Uh Garland High School has a film department
And headed by the great Mr. Schubert and every year all the kids work on
All year long they work on their films and then on this night each year is always on a Saturday night
They take all the films put them together in about a two-hour block
So everybody can see what these kids have been working so hard on these young men and women
And we have been for the ninth time not only been asked to do the podcast here
But also to be industry judges because somebody thinks we're in an industry. I was gonna say we got them pulled on
Hey, you know, why did we stop it now?
We're at the point in the lie where the lie has become the truth
You tell us it's like they're I call it the Rick Flair syndrome
You tell somebody something long enough. They're gonna believe it because that's not a pretty band
But he told you he was so much you believed it
But we're gonna be interviewing some of these the students as this time goes on now
We just finished the film festival
Don and I have cast out votes votes are locked in
Actually, I'm finished mind up. I have like two left, but I came a little bit later. Don't they don't know that just roll with this
Okay, it's the ear of the mind, bro. Okay
But so what we're gonna they're gonna have some they got some for freshmen setup while the votes are being tall
You better hurry. You only got 15 minutes, bro. Yeah, and then we will go back to the auditorium
Where they will be avoiding now they will be awarding
The prizes and a bunch of different categories and we will be presenting awards
Yeah, which we've done that was it the second time we started doing that? Oh, no, I think this is like the third
No, I'll talk about the first time we present it was our second or third show here
I think was under second and we've done it every year since except the year of COVID because we that was all online
Yeah, it was we were watching the festival on by TV. Yeah, but we were there. Yes, we were we were judge
Alex also was a judge. He had could not be here tonight
But he was able to watch the films online and cast his votes
He wanted to make sure that he was involved
You're casting your votes now. I finished mine over in the lobby of the auditorium
And even they even had our like logo up there before the show. Yeah, that was cool
And they do it every year, but every year it's still cool. It's the family. Hey, that's us and they put face name on the screen. Yeah, they put shape on there this year

I can't look a celebrity thing for it. Remember we got the fantastic before we got in the show one time for his team in the knee at the
Pants that counts just like my wife's been on the show twice technically. Yeah for a total of about nine words
But my wife has been on the show. She's now an official judge too. It's so she's always judged you
That's that's nothing new you've been doing with that woman over seven years
She's been judging you. It's like I told you the Grammy over Metallica. That's well, you know

Well, they are see that's why I that's why I always get concerned at the airport right because
They have metal detectors and I am so metal. Yeah
I don't have the buttons this week. Yeah, but we have we're not in the studio. No, we have the uh

See, I've got TSA pre-check. Yeah, and I love it
Yeah, so well when we did the global entry it's a little bit more you get to pre-check with it
Well, and I think be with you have to have global entry because you travel international. Yeah

During the festival itself mr. Schubert said they were they were planning on 600 people
In the auditorium that has to be the biggest crowd we've seen that the real Allison on the film festival
I was sitting up in the balcony because people just have coming in. Oh, yeah, they're they're
How this thing is growing every year and and the films are getting better and better better every year
Is how but what they're saying about the
The class is is there so many
lower class of freshmen and sophomores that are up in cumbers this year
So you can imagine what this can be like in two or three years. Oh, I mean this you think about it
This is our ninth time. Yeah, we have seen a freshman to senior class cycle through twice
That's our third cycle. Yeah, of of students and it's outstanding. I'm always fascinated
I mean they had this one. I was a kid. I'd have been all for it
Yeah, I want to give him a band, but I'd have been always like some of this parents always like yeah
You're the people there every year, you know, they since they're a freshman
It's like, you know, the recurring I ran into one of them at the Dallas International Film Festival
Like here's a guy. Yeah, we're the guys, you know, so and
Getting the opportunity to do this every year and watching all the the pride of the parents and of the dedication
That these students have to their films. It's just it never ceases to fascinate me and some of the stuff we saw tonight
um
Don't talk too much. Yeah, I know, but it's voting as an honest. I know, but it just shows the
The talent of the future of the
industry. I mean we know that when the trailer for the Robert Downey Jr. Dr. Doolittle was released
That was edited by a former student of Garwin High School and hearing Mr. Shuber talk about the things his former students
I mean look at the look at the masses coming in right. Oh, yeah, they know there's free food

We talked about this a little bit, but it's becoming closer and closer to reality
Disney Hulu and max the bundle is coming this summer. We still don't have a price tag yet
But I'm going to be very interested. Okay, so I did
Call Disney plus the other day, but you call them because we want it. We have the yearly Disney subscription right you do
The plus where it's commercial free and all that
And we said what about this Hulu thing? What if we want to add Hulu which I'm sure a tons of people are calling with that question
You say how can we add Hulu for the year and all that stuff and the basically they said we'd have to end the yearly subscription
Go back to monthly and then do a bundle for the time being and I don't think that because do they say what the bundle would be
How much yeah the commercial free would be like $20 a month for Hulu and Disney
But they haven't talked about max bundled in yet. No, they didn't talk about that because that's coming because I'm interested in a hulu
I am it because max I have hbl
So you get the max with it. We get it
We get max included with our cell phone plan. Yeah, so I don't pay for max. Yeah
But I do pay for Disney plus and we do pay for the ad free hulu
We used to have hulu live tv
And then realized it wasn't if the prices kept going up and the selection didn't so we're using youtube tv now
Which I absolutely put to hulu. I'd be interested
But basically we have to give up what we had and then they're saying how much hulu is just by itself a month
It's like
You know minds will just do the bundle, but we like the yearly thing. So hopefully Disney will do a yearly
Give both for the year price. That's fair
Remember when we were kids
When pay-per-view first started okay, there was that after close circuit because it was quite right
There was a company called viewers choice. You remember this and they were the ones that through your cable they were the vendor
That did pay-per-view movies and events like that later they would become in demand
Okay, they are shutting down after 40 years at the end of 2025
Well pay-per-view has kind of gone to the way of
Streamers are carrying them individually now. There are certain people like with wwe
They still offer traditional pay-per-view for the majors. Yeah, but not for the pleas in between
It's only the majors really that it's because I thought I saw a thing or a w does yeah, but
wwe is only the majors everything else is all the other pleas are through peacock and have been through the network
um
So it's kind of another one of those time passes us by because they've been a business for over 40 years
I guess I remember seeing the little viewers choice logo
You had the channel that had all the trailers for the movies they were showing
ABC
Has renewed the bachelor for season 29
If you can believe that you know they'll say I had that big thing of the golden bachelor and how oh you get another one
Yeah, the big experiment and how this is gonna be forever and then after three months
I don't think you made it that long three months did it
I announced the see season seven of the Rosen
Revival of the Connors will be its final season so they're getting get regeared to wrap that up
They've now had American Idol for eight years
So they've renewed American Idol
Which would put an idol at like somewhere in the neighborhood of season 19 or 20 because there was a little layoff between Fox and ABC
Uh, they're bringing back celebrity jeopardy
Okay for season three and celebrity wheel of fortune for season five and they have canceled the show and uh
Not dead yet after two seasons. Okay

Which makes sense because why would you come back after a three-day weekend?
Right now wins graduation though 30 first. Yeah, I mean
Oh, wow, so it's just see for us. It was like we were done at the beginning of May
I mean graduation wasn't to like the middle of June
So we you know because I'm old
That's right. I'm always but I also went to school in a different area and we started later we finished later
So when I moved out here, I was like wait, you have a what's a fall break?
That was if that was a weird thing for me
No, because we didn't start till after labor day
Oh, so it was just like why have a fall break if you don't you know you start that late
But what we also had like three weeks in winter and our our spring break didn't start till the week of Easter Sunday it was that week
Yeah, so I moved out here and they're like I'm like it's not even same Patrick's day. What are we doing?
But let's talk more about what you guys are all of you four years?

Don and I were talking earlier. This is the ninth time we've done this so you've had to deal with us
That's right except for one year because if I'm doing the math correctly
Go, but well, no, it was after wouldn't it would your freshman year have been the year after wouldn't 2021 22 23 24
We were in covid 2020 2021 freshman year. So first semester freshman year would have been
Yeah, well freshman year all year we were gone
We didn't really go to school. Yeah, so
Was that the year we did the festival virtually?
Yes
Because that was kind of weird. Yeah, so what was that like for you guys because we didn't get to talk to you when you were freshman because we didn't get to do
We were I was literally on my couch going this is weird
Talk about that change of you were doing everything virtually
You're obviously collaborating online because you couldn't be in person to now when you know the world's back open and we're doing the thing
Uh
Yeah, I mean the festival was both virtual and in person
So some people didn't come and then some people did and we all had to wear masks
And I remember it was just kind of awkward because
There was nobody here. I was like one of the only people at the festival
And it was nice seeing like my classmates in person. What about you?
Uh
Yeah, I remember I remember I remember ROC freshman year
Uh, I came here to hoodie
Uh, but you were comfortable though. That's the important class is though
I mean a lot of solo projects. We didn't work a lot together. I mean we talked about working
But I don't think nothing really that had to be virtually and just don't
We did one film with it. Anila and I did a film together virtually on zoom
But I was always amazed at the creativity during that time
Sorry of people that were doing short films via zoom
I mean there was a whole there was like a whole horror movie that was done
If you remember yeah, and then they did a sequel to it
Which was weird, but now
Are you gonna pursue this after next week?

And I'm going to go to the and I'm going to major in business
So I'm probably going to incorporate some of what I've learned
Here doing production with it. You could be a producer
Yeah, because he was a what is a producer. I don't know. I can be a producer. There we go
Is is there were you fans of film before you got into the program?
Oh
Or was it or did you foster that love through these four years? You know, you know like you know every kid has a youtube channel
Yeah, at some point. Yeah, that's kind of how I started I still like you know
Make a little skits and stuff with my cousins or whatever
I wasn't really like a big film there like I wouldn't watch movies. Oh wow the cinema to you know
I wasn't all that but uh the creating aspect
I think I've had that for a pretty long time. Okay
Um for me it actually started out my church because like they asked me like to do like videography for them
But I didn't have an experience so like when I was going into high school and I saw like film as like
As an elective I decided to do that to kind of like help me like also in church
So now I do like both simultaneously nice
Um, I've I mean, I've always been into art
But I didn't really get into film until my freshman year when my dad suggested I'd join the film class
Because he's a big film nerd and then I've just like developed that love

Who is a filmmaker that you have learned to be a fan of through this program?
And you can't say Schubert because that's that's the assumed
Hmm
That way we cover him just in case it's not him. That's right
Like a director we've learned any kind of a filmmaker whether it's an actor whether it's a cinematographer whether it's art direction
whatever
That's a that's a really that's a very good question. Was there a genre that you weren't into? Oh before before you took film. Oh here we go
Um, Edward Wright
You know, okay big fan of uh, we watched baby driver. I was a very big very big fan of that
Uh, I love that movie so much. I have the soundtrack. That's right because that soundtrack is insane
I'm a big action guy. Okay. I love action movies and
Stuff with like, you know kind of intense. We also watch the game
Uh, Michael Douglas uh, yeah, David Fincher. So I love like the grittiness the darkness that
David Fincher has, but like also the color that was used with uh, what did I mention before
What did I mention before right Edward Wright and right and that sound quality it was it was just really good. Have you seen the fall guy yet?
The fall guy I heard it was so good. It's so good
You need to because it's a lot of fun
I think like going into high school like
Get right up on that thing. There you go. Going to high school. Mine is probably like romance or drama
It was kind of like typical, I guess, but then like when I started getting to film like Mr. Schubert
He's not a big romance guy like he is not so he didn't really show us the romance so every time I asked him
He was just you just laughed at me so I was like okay, so you know that like there's a formula you go with it
Um for me my answer is similar to farzines and anilas actually
I was a really big like rom com person. I think I've watched every two thousand rom com ever
And then it was when I got into film that I started like exploring other genres and I really like David Fincher
Um, and I also really like one car why when I did my independent study on him on the like
Films outside of America. I really like developed an appreciation for him and the stories that he tells because it's like a different type of romance
It's not really typical, you know rom com. Well, I love I love Asian film too
You know, he's very he's the the guy for Asian film festival a Dallas and we cover that as well because
The storytelling is different the cinematography takes a different flavor and I like that
Um, I've actually
You guys know the departed right? Yes, that is based on a trilogy of films called infernal affairs
That is getting a 4k re-release so I need to go back and revisit those because I haven't watched them in years
But stuff like um the raid
If you haven't seen the raid redemption
It's like of it's a video game in reverse
So it's this big building big apartment building it's owned by these drug lords
And this cop has to go in the front and work his way all the way up right and it's some of the greatest action you'll see
What kind of like of the films that you worked on? What's the one you're most proud of?
Oh, that's right. Take your favorite child. I said it like senior year like of this festival that showed tonight. Oh, man
Oh, I'm asking. I'm asking
Okay, not me first. Okay. I say soft lunch. Um, I was a director but actually so it was really fun
And I think I learned like a lot like about directing and also like cinematography through that experience
So it was I wouldn't say I was necessarily like it looked look the best. We sounded the best like just for me
Look though. I feel like it like grew me as like a cinematographer and like a director. All right. Yeah
I don't have to go with showtime the final one we did
Uh, it just like you know quality wise looks the greatest and like
So I wrote it right. I showed the scripts mr. Schubert. He was gassing me up
So good you guys you guys better execute this so well
And I think I think we did an okay job and uh, I'm really proud of it
Um, for me it's going to be pomegranate and not because it's the like I think the best film that I worked on
But more so it was the first time that I really ventured into filmmaking outside of class and wanted to do something like in my own time
Overwinter break
So I just reached out to one of my poetry friends. She writes poems and I just adapted one of her poems
And I dug that especially how you had the the poem at the end
That kind of show like you still did a lot with it
But it showed the source material
I will tell you the very first film I watched last night as I was preparing for tonight was soft launch

Because I
laughed out loud and went this is genius
My wife came out of the bedroom and she's like what do you I'm like no, I'm rewinding this and my you you made by wife laugh
And my wife has to deal with
So making my wife laugh like
Was that something that you just kind of like worked through because you didn't want to mess with the video editing part of it
Was this necessity being the mother of invention?
Okay, so basically like in our past films
uh, we always just like
Like actually had like the phone out
And like just like video tape that but mr. Shebert like hated it
And he's like it was just like sloppy a little lazy
So he's like this time you have to do something different
So like he likes to just that I would do like like stuff and like in real life
So we came up with that. We're like okay. Let's just do cardboard cutouts
Because that was that was brilliant
I thought that was amazing and I was like that like this is the first film I'm watching
So and there's like a bazillion of these I have to watch in the next 24 hours
That's right was that yeah, I don't tell him we got to wrap this up

Because I watched it last night because I had to watch the last half hour before we came over here
So we had to be ready when you guys came in the door
We were talking to the students before you guys about writing the script and putting it together
How close when you watched it tonight how close was it to the vision you had going in
Um, I would say that was pretty close
But I was hoping for it to be like more dynamic, I guess how so um I guess because I feel like um
Like
Like the viewers couldn't really see like how like stressed out like a the like I guess the director of the show was
And I wanted to really emphasize that
And to like build up tension um to like the ending where he's like making a joke that I'm like
Oh, he's like just loves the show more and such. I'd I cut yeah
You're right because the punchline kind of happens and then there's a little bit more after that
And I want people to actually go out and see it this thing at some point
But I you guys did a great job. How much time total were you actually shooting it?
Wish like we shop for like almost like two to three out two to like around two hours a day, right for how long um
For like maybe like
It was over like the span of like more than a month
But maybe like like actual days would be like around like fourth like seven to four to you
See I because I'm always fascinated by that because people think with short films you just go when you do the thing
And it's like no, there's a lot of time that goes into this
Was there one particular scene in the film that you had to do more takes of than any others?
Would you remember because you're the main actor
Honestly, I'm kind of out of it. Okay
You're still coming your cup the drones wearing off because you were in the seeing it in that huge screen in there
Where are you guys are both seniors? Yeah, we're both seniors. All right, so what happens after next week? Where are you going?
After next week because you know next week last week of school, right? Yeah, yeah
So where are you going after that? Oh for college. Yes. Oh
Well, I'm going to UT Austin. All right
Major um, I think about doing computer science, but I don't know if I want a double major or not right now
Are you going to do any film while you're down there because you're in Austin? Yeah, I really do want a double major in film
But then like I grew to have like an interest in biomedical engineering too, so I'm just trying to like
UT not a bad school for that either
I'll actually be down there. I was just may in a couple of months because I work greater Austin Comic Con down there
Which is over in Cedar Park, which is an outstanding show. What about you my friend?
I'm going to the Paul university. It's all right. Yeah, sir major

Were you guys and I love asking this about the students were you guys film people before this or did you a
Developed that love for film through these four years because you did all four correct. Oh, I only did two
Okay, but that's at least half that's the majority

In like eighth grade, I really got an interest in it and
Yeah, so it's kind of been my main goal for the past like five years
Was this mainly comes
Um, I would say I developed like my love for film during the program because beforehand
I did art and since my friends were in the program
I was like oh, I might as well like try out to do that too because I think like
Um, I don't know classes in art kind of like drains me. So like I just wanted to try something new
It's summer movies season officially now has been for a couple weeks. Is there any movies that you really really really looking forward to seeing right now?
Or ones that are maybe out that you haven't had a chance or like I have to do this now
Yeah, I could think of anything either because I don't know I want to
Oh, I mean, I guess it's an animation film, but my friends and I we're planning to watch spy family like
Code I think white or something
Yeah, that's the the brand new one that just came out right yeah
That the angelic I think had that at one point
That's he and that's another thing anime has just
Because I'm old school anime. I'm you know starblazers Voltron those things and before you know when it wasn't cool
And now like my niece who's 14. She's full on it. She loves academia. She loves all the things
What about you anything coming up you're looking forward to um or something that you haven't seen that you're like I still need to see this

This is one of the coolest shows we do every year after and we just did it right after the diff

That was so Colin sent us the beat

But still work for our movie

Moments like these is very difficult for me because I'm a judge
So I can't talk to you about like
How much I loved what you did because you know then it might give stuff away, but
I really dug getting the band back together because as a guy who has a band I get it
Um, and I was a kid. I was in band in high school. I mean I've been a musician my most of my entire life
But you worked on doll story too, which I thought was fan. I'm a big fan of when people can do animation well
And all of the animated features this year were fantastic
Especially when you're doing stop motion because it's like we're now in day 14 and we've gotten three seconds of this
But getting the band back together that was all original like the you guys wrote the songs, right? Yeah
Let's vote in quotation marks. Especially yours because
Be but it's it's the comedy rule of three right the third one is the hammer and
I'm sitting up in my seat and I'm like okay. I'm seeing what you're doing here
Where did that idea come from for the third one just just for the whole just to do that particular short
Like who was like we're gonna do a thing where we were in a band and then we're gonna
Do a band and it's gonna take over place over like three hours and it's all gonna go go to pot
We were trying to come up with ideas for this project and he was like the only way I could think of this is if it's like three different genres
And they're trying to decide on one so we kind of want that the third song is actually the one that we made first oh
Really the one we conceptualized it is actually there's a whole story to that one action go for it
Well, we have this thing. There's this smart board in one of our g-town periods, okay
And every every time Aaron and I are in the same g-town
And so every time that we go over there
I will there's a button on there that makes the screen just go black and I'll go over there
And I have this whole bit where I press it and it's like it corrupts me or something
And so we were just laughing about that and I was like hey, what if I sing about about corruption and
Tax evasion
What we did we made an entire list of things he's like obsessed with they're like
Silly about and we just kind of like
Made into a song and only uranium and tax evasion made it in but like whatever
Yeah, that's two things. Yeah, that is two that is two things both of the projects you worked on were so vastly different
Was there one that drew you in more or are you just like I want to be as diverse as possible because those are two completely different ball games
Yeah, I wanted to like
Just get it all out there because I didn't really know what to do
But then getting the band back together was really fun, but then a doll store. It was
It was it was fun suit because you got to like you know actually like
Move this stuff and like how to put it there and like

And you were doing with the wooden mannequins too, which is got to be even harder
Because of the points of articulation in those things. Yeah, talk about that
Just like I don't want to talk about it. I can't relive it
It was it was like actually it was kind of easy because like we had to because like moving them because I had like
Because like I used to draw it like moving them and like putting it like there
It was like really easy, but then like yeah, it's like put it back to like a southern
Because like when we stopped filming and then go to go back to film me
We had to like put it back where exactly was and that was kind of hard to doing it. Oh, absolutely
finding different place like like to match it up and it was kind of like
Yeah, but it was really fun doing it. Where are you guys at in your high school careers?
Well, you got in your high school careers, right? All right. All right soft morse

So she'll tell him in advance. We're watching this movie and then he goes and he reads the Wikipedia page
So he knows what to expect. I read the I got halfway through the Wikipedia page from mid-summer and I said

That that just reading uh, I was like this this makes my brain hurt like I can't put myself through that

What brought you to the program?
I was actually just kind of putting the class but it actually

Mr. Schubert in middle school he walked into our uh get right up on that microphone

You should all join film and he showed us like a bunch of films and we were like, oh those are kind of mid
They're kind of lame but okay, whatever. So kind of films. What was he showing you guys?

Gosh, there was like one about like this puppet
I can't even remember was it was it
Were they films of past students that he was showing you? Oh, okay, okay
I think I know what you're talking about. Was there like a grandma in that one? Yeah, look
I was uh, I remember because they showed you the last year at the film program
What about you my friend? Um for me uh, well at first it was an alternative to taking the NYP class

But I remember going to the uh ROC film last year as an eighth grader and I think
I think that might have given me the film book
I think that was when I kind of was like oh my gosh. I really want to do this
Well, this is our ninth time doing the festival
That is easily the biggest crowd I've ever seen
For this festival. What was that like having that many people in a room with you watching the stuff you'd worked on?
It it was insane uh for me hearing the loud reaction to cotton her web was
Beautiful, but also terrifying the web design line almost got buried
It almost got buried
I caught it so the reactions are always the best part like I didn't film last year because I've been filmed too
And so I did it last year though reactions
Like people laughing at your film was always like the best part when is it stressful when when you know the moments coming and you're like
Yeah, hit the beat hit the beat hit the beat for sure
It was so nerve-racking because like I was like counting down like to when like the film was gonna be showing guys like
Oh my gosh, everybody's gonna hate it
You're you're looking at the you're just watching the list get shorter and shorter and shorter
Are you already planning your films are gonna work on next year or do you not?
Is it or do you have to wait on those assignments?
Um, I mean if we're doing the musical next year. I've definitely got some ideas in mind. Okay
I'm not doing film next year
Yeah, I don't have to ruin my schedule but
I mean
You can definitely plan ahead if you want to see like you can get upper classmates to like let you know what the assignments are in advance
So you could play I usually just like wait for the assignments
But like at one point I would really like to just make my own film for funsies. What kind of film would you want to make?
Probably a horror one. I really love horror. It's a favorite genre. That's that's him. I did not my jam

There's certain like like films are considered horror films like ready or not

Um, so there's a movie coming out that I already saw at diff, but I can't wait for all my friends to see it

I saw that on the like roster for diff and I want to see it. They did like three screenings of it
Which is crazy, but when you get the late night Saturday slot
That's a very very for horror films. That's a very very prestigious slot
Because we've been doing that for a long time. That's how we got this gig. That's how we met the shoebirds was through diff
