Alright boys recording is up not yet don't be careful don't put it down for
posterity sake I'm gonna turn myself down because man I'm peaking real hard
there okay for posterity sake it is 910 in the evening on the east coast it is
610 in the evening now 611 in the evening on the west coast it is the 17th of
May in the year of our Lord 2025 season 15 episode 45 714 times you have been
welcome to the clubhouse podcast live normally with sunset lounge DFW on
Thursday nights we just had a show two nights ago but that's not gonna stop us
we ain't scared welcome my name is Rob I am the executive producer of the
clubhouse podcast and this is one of our favorite shows of the year we because
we're only doing audio tonight I we have to do theater of the mind as the kids
call it we are live to tape at Garland High School for the 20th annual real
owl film festival you are breathing right into that thing I am trying not to
to my right is my co-host and a man who's only been to this particular
establishment one time before tonight he is Alex you know it always seems to
work out that something is coming up in the tail end of May or whenever this
is held it always winds up being a conflict and I made sure this year no
matter what I was going to be at the real owl cinema film right across from
me is the official fact checker of sooner or greater productions and a man who is
so mysterious he doesn't want people to know his name turn your badge over
dude you may know him is Zigg Boonu but his mom and even Don Ford I'm gonna call
him Don Ford oh look he even says NTFCA vice president on it because he's
fancy and put that on there they just put that I'm I'm resisting the urge to
make sure they get that on their own the organization is helping yes some of
the uh our fellow critics are okay Don we've heard you introduce yourself
this is saying you're the face threat and a Bruce careful
anniversary I know well the 20th anniversary but it's our 11th time doing this
which means we have now officially been doing this more than half of that I
know it's scary you are you have been speaking on this and looking forward to
this day so that you can say it which means we continue to fool them that's
what it means but you know me gotta go bye bye yep we got the kids coming in here
just a little while so for those of you that have never heard this particular
episode of the show before Garwin High School in Garwin Texas oddly enough has a
film department run by mr. Tommy Schubert friend of the show not the only
friend of the show it's gonna be here tonight and so all week all year long
the kids work on the students they call them kids coming their kids but you
know I'll see all year long these students work on their films yep and then
about two hours worth are shown on a big screen in the auditorium and every
year we have done this look at you karate kid oh I was gentle we are we have
been judges every year now eleven times I've done this and this year was a
little bit different every year has a theme this year is Beeljuice Beeljuice
if you've seen us in our film club shirts that's what that comes from this
year we had a very special guest join us the great Jorge Gutierrez very long
time friend of the show who we have not seen even since before you were on the show
I and honestly all it took was two stories I want that dude on every Jorge
Gutierrez the the writer director and producer of the book of life which is a
wonderful film if you have not seen it he did our show like four years in a
road to Dallas International Film Festival he is the reason we got Diego Luna
on the show because Diego Luna is in the book of life yep and it was the weekend
after the trailer for Rogue One dropped and you have long said that is one of
your if not favorite one of your favorite episodes ever if only to ask about
the toys there there was well there was that and I mean it that that that
episode exists in the history of this show for
great reasons and sad reasons and we won't go into that I'll tell you
we'll keep it happy but I told you that as soon as we kicked off the show
tonight I wanted to enlighten you you wanted to break my
a little bit I believe was the word you said so we've talked on the show that I
have a new car I have an all-electric Chevy Blazer
it's not very nice not a trailblazer which I found out is not the same thing the
trailblazer is a tiny tiny version of it well the funny thing is it used to be
the larger version but they had a lot of issues with it so they were like
we like the name we're just gonna fit it somewhere else it's it's bigger than
the tracks the tracks is the smallest one yeah the tracks might as well just be a
roller skate so which I've driven one of those called a Toyota Matrix
and I loved that car some of the way oh man that car that car had more cargo
space than you realize it was amazing I drove that to Vegas in back as a dude
who owned an MX three nice I totally understand so you helped me
discover something about my car when we were downtown working with
Riner and Grego on the night of Lucas return to the mavericks or to Dallas to play
the mavericks yep you said something about the way the engine sounded the
the lack of an engine I want to clarify it is an electric vehicle but it was the
front end so I noticed it when I got out very ambient kind of almost like
at a spa like a spa yeah I've heard it theory will use more than once yeah I
found out why okay that is federally mandated
that it has to make noise or that it has to be that that it has to make noise
because the engine itself is silent and it was causing people to get to
accidents so the federal government mandated had to make a noise that's
funny in some of the more expensive models you can make it actually make
engine noise but my thing is I don't when I'm when I'm driving I've got
music on I got podcasts on I don't care what noise the engine makes well you're
already you're taking into account that you have the noise that you are used to
I have the noise that I desire right because we let's let's be honest we are of the group
that we keep our radios louder than we keep
mm-hmm any engine and let me talk about that for a minute because there is somebody
that lives in the next street from my house and I mean like it's a street over that does not
understand how sonic waves work okay you're gonna have to explain this because I'm waiting
so so for people that don't know there's base waves travel waves all those things okay
base waves are the only waves that can penetrate walls and they're the they travel
farther than other kinds of sound waves which is why you can hear a subwoofer from a mile
and a half out okay you want to test your car stereo cool you want to make sure everything's
working fine cool when we get into hour two I'm going to need you to turn that down bit homie
at hour two you're just having a keens in your let's be honest but but but it was just like
and it was there was no rhythm to it oh no there was nothing that I was like it's got to beat I
can dance to it can't say much for the lyrics I give it an eight nine yes oh and I know I'm old
man Rob because I used to have my I've had two different vehicles that had a 15 in the trunk yeah
like I I appreciate a good car sound system just as much as the next guy but let's keep the
marathon to a minimum yeah you know what I mean yeah I had I had dual 20s in mind so I understand
it oh but but we also come from a place where that's the culture that well that's commonplace
you had it sounds already yeah car I mean I it took up all the trunk space in my all the hatch
space in my 1986 Mustang oh wow which yeah and I've always forget winkle checking in well no here's
what happened it did I didn't do that until I moved out here okay because I was working at
incredible universe and they had this but for the record that's a good pull we had a ridiculous
promotion I have to tell you about later because it's very complicated but it got me a lot of
cool stuff so I remember when the guys installed it uh huh because I was like I think I want I know
what the first song I want to play though no no no wait wait before we get too far was this the old
school circuit city install or did you go to a specialist no they have installers that worked
there but I was clarifying that it was where you were yeah it was incredible universes okay they said
no you have to play this song as the first song when you okay so you did not pick it I I had picked
a song they gave me a better suggestion okay so the first song I ever played it was a CD play it was
a Sony CD should we do our agents say it was the first song you bumped you could say that yeah
because before that I did have the the discman that had the cassette adapter yep I remember that
very well so the first song I ever played in that car was hot for teacher by Van Halen because
of the drum intro that is a very good point and I was like you know what that was an excellent
choice because I was going to do dream lover by Mariah Carey because of the way it kicks interesting
but no hot for teacher that's your lesson for today kids when you get a new stereo make the first
song you play hot for teacher right interesting yeah probably one of my I believe is the greatest
Van Halen I will never record I definitely want a very different direction because I definitely
Motley crew Dr. Phil start okay sorry I was in that or Dr. Phil good no I was thinking of it
I could you tell that I was pausing and speaking slower because I was trying to remember if it was
Dr. Phil good or tick start my heart and it's my heart is always a great choice done okay yes done
I got to add to this you're way too close to it my first car was an orange with with black
plastic seats 1979 Mazda GLC hatchback but it was that I don't know I was in 1986 a Susu trooper too
no only year they made it in a two door but I much a Denon at the time which is Denon was
top of the line back then Denon was the man there were friends everything yes what chicken but
fried grease swampies the stereo is working more than a car yeah that that worked a long time back
yeah that that was that was the did you have an alpine yeah that's literally what that question
was or were you that guy that had before they had to detach with face that had to pull the whole
thing out of the handle the brick oh I go back for those guys because I knew a couple of those
guys well my favorite one was like as soon as I hit high school I had the perfect timing because
it was like what kind of stereo do you have it's an ox that's it that's all I had well that
is you had the guy that had the cassette player that he had to put the folded paper in because it
would it was oh yeah I remember that you know what let's we're gonna ask our our next guest up
you got the other one hold on our first guest of the evening who has been on this show

just a little while ago old friend of the show that has been a friend of the show longer than
we've been doing this particular episode of this show director of one of my favorite films
who told some great stories about it the book of life Jorge Gutierrez is back welcome back sir
sir I just have to say I thought I was going to make the room awkward with my little
fellow laughing in the back while you were telling those stories that was just
and this is Alex Alex is joined the show since the last time you were on we've had a we've had
kind of an overhaul over Alaska how are how do you think it's a nightmare it was it was incredible
I mean get get that thing a little bit closer to you because it's it's got to pick you up
just seeing you know seeing kids in high school make things that look better than anything that I saw
when I was in film school well that's what you think about talking yeah we we talk about that all
the time it's like back in our day it was on film stock so most schools couldn't afford this
now in the digital age did they show you the classroom that they're using I haven't seen it but
I this is the first time I'd seen it since they expanded now when I was the last time I saw it
it was just this little itty bitty area that you might fit 10 people in yeah they took over the
computer lab next door so they've got a lot more room now I mean watching these kids these students
I hate calling kids but it's some of them some of them I could be their grandfather right I wasn't
going to say it but you're not wrong you're not wrong I'm old and I get it I got 52 on the
horizon plus we also know I'm the degenerate it's probably my kid so how did you get involved
with real out because we we were talking about that in the auditorium I'm like I mean he's local
well I mean I live in LA but when we made book of life I was living in Dallas we lived here five
years because here's the studio was in deep Ellen back then the studio was deep Ellen so literally
book of life was made in deep Ellen Texas which I love that building that you guys were back
down because it was just off of the off of the where the main drag on deep Ellen so you could walk
over to Zalat to get a slice and come back absolutely and had a gorgeous building too and it was
very European and at the end of the day the whole crew would go to the pubs I have partake
something that honestly doesn't happen anywhere else so it was it was in a great experience and so
I did the festival literally ten years ago I went by Patty wrote me and she said hey it's been
ten years our ten year anniversary which you love to come out we'd love to have you I talked
to my wife we you know we fell in love with Dallas when we lived here we lived five years
and we said any excuse to come back let's do it so we're here I and when I when they dropped
your name the other day I was like our friend is coming home no no you don't understand we found out
basically together and he howled with excitement that you were gonna be yeah because we found
everybody calling him out on this but we we we literally found out when everybody else did
we didn't get a heads up and I was like our friend is coming home you are responsible for some
of the best moments in the history of this show you are the reason we had Diego Luna on this show
in that little 80 bitty room down from the Angelica and I tell that I have worn that story out no
no there's no wearing it out it's brilliant every time but I wanted to jump into a real quick
question while we have another guest setting up did you have to move to L.A. just because that's
where everybody is or was it a another decision it was I basically I could offer to another movie
and I will we had to go it's just too easy to be in the town yeah and and especially back then
this is 20 we moved back in 2016 Hollywood was going through a another transitional period
and we really really really missed Texas we missed the people we missed the food now you said
earlier you don't miss Texas in August we do not miss August weather I live here and I don't
miss Texas in August no no I'm over a decade in I'm not used to anything it's I don't even
consider it heat or weather it's just the oven yeah yeah yeah what was like working on the
Simpsons oh Tom was asking what it was like working on the Simpsons all right so here's the Simpsons
story here oh here we go so I one night I'm a huge Simpson fan one night I might have had a few
tequila too many and I'm gonna stop you there I don't think there's that's possible I agree
I agree with him I co-sign this I can't come in my defense I am immune to tequila so go on and I
went on previously Twitter now X and I put who do I have to kill this was a tweet who do I have
to kill to do the opening to the Simpsons oh and I soon to take point and I you know the little
angel in my shoulders that that's a parallel but the little devil said this is gonna work
yeah no no no no here's exactly what happened your PR was like oh I don't know that
turbine but your agent went good so immediately honestly took an hour Matt Salman
the current showrunner of the Simpsons wrote back no murder necessary
okay let's do it nice and then I got a DM from 20th century legal department the next day
and they were very kind and they said sir mr. Viteris sir could you please remove that tweet
I'd have been like on one condition oh I believe that was already the condition they're so funny
they're like we don't want anybody to think murder was implied next next thing you know you have
like the star or the globe and it's like hoody hoody areas removed snooze dog has written a song
about it yes all right we've got we need to let you go shake hands and kids fingers but thank you
so much you say you are oh you got you got something I want you to sign their sketchbook here

but Jorge Gutierrez is back we're so glad that he got to have a couple of minutes with us
because we know we wanted to meet the students and raise your hand if you're old day
the picture now feels inferior oh oh wait that was your medium that was years ago
and he's actually drawing one of the characters from the book of life we're actually watching
this happen bro this is this is amazing and did I tell you that he and his mom did a best by
commercial one time no there was there was a there was a new laptop coming out I'm at the house
and I'm like isn't that Jorge yeah and then next year the diff I was like you did a best by
commercial with your mom he's like yeah they just called me yeah no I had a moment where I
thought that this was setting me up for failure and you were gonna say it was actually nobody beats the
Wiz and it turns out he shot the commercial I was in all right thank you so much brother I'm
always so glad we got to see you oh today is already great day I need one person to sit there
and you guys can share the laugh because I only got one other mic but you can share it if you want

watching that on the big screen in the auditorium tonight yeah so part of me was like kind of like
thinking what are things that I would want to go fix because like yeah I interesting no it's good
no every time like for context I would usually like go to the festival because like like I we had to
like it was like something that we had to go do as a great partly but also the fact is I would
usually be embarrassed on some of them because I just felt lazy and I just wanted it to just be
intended in a different direction but I usually see how like people usually respond and then I
realize oh like there's some people that enjoy it but I why don't I enjoy it I guess well I think
when you make something and and guys I want you to pipe in on this too you always want to tinker
with it yeah you know we've been doing this now almost 15 years and I'll listen back to an
episode and go I like to have that one back you know and while other people like no that was awesome
I'm like it was awesome do you but if it's awesome do you hey who am I right no no no no no it's
because like a friend of mine at the time was saying why are you like trying to like beat yourself up
this is like really good it's your art yeah that's why yeah yeah no it's because like he was saying
that like literally no one wants to do this yet you are like going to like put yourself into this
what got you guys into film was it this class or were you into film before this
no I'm not gonna lie I wasn't in the film that much before this class to be honest well got you
what got you here nothing wrong with that nothing wrong with that at all and you guys made
what I love about this festival is you guys aren't afraid to take chances and you guys
especially and I I'm gonna screw up the name of it I'm gonna try it again of antimifobia
because I mean there was there was a lot in there that I don't know that a lot of people would
have done like you you worked with you makeup effects the last shot was that a happy accident
or did you guys actually plan for that because the last shot of the film the the wound if you will
is now being crawled over by another insect did you plan that 100% hey you know what wait a minute
they said it I believe let's just be honest okay so for context let's do the honest with the
okay that would be a first are we making a team break up right now we're yokoing these guys
and they're chi-schoolers no it's because like our film teacher was like giving us like input and then
like they were like saying the general audience for some of them that like they were just confused
at the end and then like we just thought we might as well just like go change the end do and then wait
what did you guys like the ending so the ending of the movie made no sense the first time we showed it
because that last scene did not exist or it did exist but we didn't use it because I don't know why
it might have been like I thought the bug was because I was wondering all the bugs and I might have
not always like not supposed to be used or something I don't know but um for some reason we didn't use
it oh yeah I'm sorry but um for some reason we did not use that scene so it was just me coughing and
coughing and then nothing raw goes but um then our teacher was like hey um this movie kind of needs
an ending so we looked for our shots and that was just the one that was there so it wasn't even a
reshoot it was more along the lines of what fits yeah I appreciate the fact that they're owning that
yeah because I don't know maybe films that might have won best picture last year had an ending that
made no sense but that's just me oh what was that Rob and why did you feel that way I I don't
want to say the name of it because I don't need them watching it that's why do you you guys have
like a movie that you like to watch over and over and over again do you mean like generally
outside of like the films we yeah like when when you're just when you want to just kick back and watch
a movie what kind of movies do you gravitate to it generally we just change over time because I
would usually just go watch like red line it was like an animated series and okay like you ask
this question to them but like what's it called the general reasoning behind oh okay go ahead please
like join like don't pass uh-huh I didn't know that like that class existed so like when like the
like teachers like mom showed up as they saw them choose like advertising like film class I was like
oh wait um like I don't want to just go do it because I wanted to like go pursue animation
and like I heard that like there was like a lot of context and like people generally just doing
like films first for like doing animated projects and I was thinking oh I'm just like go do that
so I can have like a better idea and like what the industry is kind of like whenever it comes
like films in that industry partly because like they do storyboards they do like what's called
they do the scripting it's generally just like stop that's like kind of similar to just like
films done in real life and just like films done like through like a computer it's just a
different way to shoot it yeah so real quick I would say please you you're very a devian you're very
informed in this scope looking at it from a business Emmett you had mentioned about not being
interested as much but now doing it John where are you in that scope um I sort of just rolled
into it um I like it though okay do you do you see any of you like sticking with it beyond because
this is film four which means it's this is church right now as the kids say I'm majoring in film
nice nice I want to clarify this is audio medium the person who said that they were not
interested in film is now majoring in film you know what that's also the same person who on the
way into the theater I was like wait you were in there is no movie and I really loved how you shot
that and the look on your face was just why and just this tiny man telling me that he loves my movie
because like what you guys did with that independent of anything else it was so cleanly shot I was so
impressed and he said that to me when we were in there watching and for something called there is
no movie there's there is a narrative yep which I appreciate it and it was a narrative that could
be followed and what I really dug about it is that you were able to do that without dialogue
like visually you were able to go okay this is what's going through this is the thread that runs
through it but how did that come together when you have no dialogue and you have a narrative but
it's kind of what it is so it was originally supposed to be like different genres so like think
of it like kind of like the Truman show but like the camera was generally just like there and
essentially because like oh like they're being recorded like kind of like how Truman is usually like
being recorded I guess okay well that's what I was like thinking you're like that's what he was thinking
yeah so yeah it would be kind of like shifting genres like each different section it was
a different genre but we didn't have to be honest we didn't have a lot of actors so we just kind
of shifted it from that to psychological yeah yeah no because like we were trying to go do a sick
calm we were trying to go to but not in New York it was like faithfully like similar to that
I think it was just like beautiful view or something no what's any of that inspired by like
Ringo or the original version of the ring over in Japan because there was a lot of like really
cool similarities in how the camera was shot and I don't know if that was coincidental or on purpose oh
really yeah yeah if you ever have a chance obviously there was the ring here but the original
was called ring goo out of Southeast Asia that it's really well done and you had
don't worry I'll make sure you know the different ring makes because we did the ring and then
there was another version of the ring because they cost 12 bucks to make $74 million what was
it like for you guys to have Jorge here what was it like for like to have Jorge Gertieres here
this morning yeah no it was actually like kind of inspiring because like yeah it's some like I
said I want to go into into the animation industry that's why I'm asking yeah no it's because like
it kind of felt like it was stuff that I had already knew in some ways because like I basically
would just like go use the internet to just basically just like look at like people in the
industry and just like looking at like the resources I could learn from there and there were some
things that like I guess from like the perspective of like someone trying to like actually put
themselves through like making a film and then asking people to like legit and generally just like
that type of thing it at least gave me like somewhat a sense of hope I guess because like
there are like it's not just me who just wants to enter into the industry there are like a lot
more people who want to enter into like why am I different compared to like this other guy who's
right but there's so many avenues that you can do it through now where has you know when I
didn't have gray hair like it was very limited on who could do what now that we're in the digital
age you've got YouTube you've got streaming services you've got all these other avenues so I don't
want you to think of it that way thinking of it is how do I make my mark because you guys have
already shown that you can do this with multiple exactly so take that where that like a badge
and when you make your first feature take these because I was thinking about this earlier too
take these films put those on the DVD yeah these are if these are my first films that I made
it works for Robert but I agree as it can work for them that's actually a really cool idea
so that the start yeah culmination so you're you're you're going film in Austin what about you
gentlemen so I generally was thinking of trying to go to like wholesale university because like oh
it's animation full sales a good choice yeah no the thing is I found out that like it's not really
about like making films it's mainly just about like animating for games or something okay yeah and
like it still teaches like animation but the fact is I feel like I could just like go to like
UTV because like my family like they're generally like they don't enjoy the fact that like yeah I
want to be an animator and the fact is they don't really get a lot of money the reputation is like
well known like due to like what's across the spider verse like I don't know for this yeah like they
don't they didn't get really paid 150 animators worked on that show yeah and they like usually got
overworked and they usually got like mistreated at times well and but when stuff like that comes out
it's now the industry making up for that too which is great yeah no it's because it's bringing that
awareness no it's because I know that like just animating isn't like the only thing you can do
like you can just like go to art promote yourself in other ways just basically just create content
and like different types of content it can't just be like animations right that's what I want to
go through mainly but still yeah but oh sorry please go use everything is the thing that gets you
to the next thing right yeah and I was gonna say we've heard a lot on that one what about you you
you've been way too quiet John sorry so like uh career wise college wise I am really not gonna
go into film I'm gonna go into um horticulture nice light landscaping um that's why he's the bug
wrangler yeah um I like film I couldn't really see myself doing it as a job um I don't really know why
but it's just kind of um well everyone I'm not very good at computers um that's always good
wrecking that deleted some stuff and I thought I deleted like our whole movie oh no time and it turns
on I didn't I just like you take this I will break this yeah all right they're telling me we

I mean I've submitted my ballot so I can talk about it one of my favorite films in the festival okay
because and I'm just gonna tell you it's almost I'm gonna say Liam and Jack loved it I loved it because
it was so different from everything else it's true I like because I was telling them because like
we have to actually we've watched the films last night oh because we have to come over here and
get ready for so we're ready when you guys get here so you guys were at the mark where it was
a half an hour before the end so that's so I told Alex when we hit the sitcom that's when we're
leaving and he kept going is this it like no it's not gonna be meant by sitcom this the only one
that could have been one don't start that don't start that it had a laugh track it had three acts
there was even a we'll be right back thing which you know I'm not true not I'm true
but at that same time there were others that had some sitcom aspects so just saying that's
it come one I felt might have been under utilizing what they did it was absolutely it was and you
you compare you have to be here for couple this is every episode but you you actually mentioned
it as very sign fell this yep and you're not wrong what made you decide to do that because you
guys worked on other stuff to the lemith have her to have her in a documentary which we saw
earlier this year at the bankhead film festival the right as well as the next generation and it may be
it may be very hungry what made you decide to do the do the Liam and Jack thing honestly it was
different and we wanted we had we'd seen so many things and I feel like there's kind of a trope
whenever you're watching high school films it's like oh yeah this is a high school film and we were
like have we ever seen something like this and so we just kind of wrote this script and it ended up
working it was really cool can I say something in that that connected with me trying to open the pickle
jar oh see I thought you're gonna say because people don't understand that when you buy a jar of
pickles you have to open it before you put it in the fridge because something happens that it forms
this titanium seal I had a jar I know this is the true story I had a jar of pickles about a month
ago it took me four days I literally had to get a butter knife and get up in there and free the
air to get the lid off that connected with me now he is the clamp see thank you I tried to try and
and I mean I'm old so you know the clip didn't work for me I learned I had to free the air
you Alex mentioned this too you had a laugh tracking talk about what what what did you go to
like okay we need to put a laugh track it's because again it's different and what's their
temptation to put the laugh track in the wrong place oh for sure oh that was definitely was and
the laugh tracks was like it was definitely a last minute edit that we made in the original plan
that were supposed to be laugh tracks and then by the time we like turn our first draft in for class
we hadn't gotten them in and it was very much it I was done my dad's computer at midnight adding
laugh tracks and I just wanted to add them in so many you know how hard it is to find laugh tracks
I'm sure it is because now everybody wants you know I that was my laugh pay me a buck yeah
that's true I'm just like hey I'm just glad to be in the world like the alternative is
finding like 30 people hey everyone laugh for me I actually did that I had to produce a film
and a previous job where it was like it was a pseudo game show and I literally went to church
on a Sunday and said okay here's what I need everybody to do and they were like okay and it
worked give me wrong it worked but then you also talk about the difference because you did the
documentaries was your approach different because now you're dealing with scripted material
versus unscripted material and you have to talk sir at some point you got to talk
he's like no right no I don't I'm in America he's right though
so but with that same thing I was noticing like with yours you have the Lima te Verna
next generation did you work on it either the documentaries or
minding give it is in time for this uh fair enough well I wanted to say those two documentaries were
phenomenally done independent of the scripting like he was talking about and I was just curious
where is your connective tissue because you could really feel some emotion in both of those
so with the te Verna what your connective tissue is uh and for next generation what yours is Jacob
if you don't mind um for the next generation what we found is that we really had to ask the right
questions and what we what we did is we really found these great interviewees that um they really
brought a lot of um like this emotion yeah to um to the topic I'm not sure how to explain it
but with comparing it to the other movie we did the sitcom it's it's a lot more narrative so
I wouldn't say there's the same amount of emotion to it now we did we talked about earlier that
we saw both of those earlier this year for for the next generation specifically yeah did you go
back and doing any extra work before you because it looked like that was between bank head now
because and I say this as a good thing because it looked this time around it looked like there was some
die laughing right now there's a color correction that cleaned it up some yes okay yes because
both there two of the documentaries we saw I definitely saw that were different than then they
were tonight yeah my um my group mate Becca Dyer she did a colored version of the film she fixed
up the color grading it's been a joke for a while now but yeah that's the difference between them
okay and why are you purple now you know as he said this has been a joke I've made fun of him so
much for this and it's finally coming back I notice these things it's what I do so you guys are
third year still still coming back for year four right what about after that what do you think
once once this whole bit is done you're gonna continue to there's a face of I don't know what to
answer this a year one they told me it would be good for college I'm doing it so that it's good
for college and then I'm never touching it ever again really really wow is it because of your
experience with this or just in general it's not my thing okay a couple bad experiences with groups
like my documentary didn't quite get done in time and that's okay but I'm not trying to keep
dealing with that for the rest of my life that's fair that is a fair assessment I appreciate the
honesty and that's anger right that is that is transparency and I I'm here for it um well I've
always like considered it but I've been more interested in something like engineering or maybe
structural engineering but I haven't really considered it I would say it's always been something
that's interested be interested me but I don't know I'm thinking about the money aspect of it I would
say there might be some engineering on set design you might be there you see I see I like what you
did there there's always something I mean it's always been something I've been really interested in
but there's always some wiggle room there I'd say hey emission impossible comes out this Friday they
need engineers to come up with the next thing for that that might be your segue yeah we'll have

so how are you guys I mean you guys this is not your first rodeo in this particular arena how
are you feeling now compared to maybe last year um last year I came in with very low expectations
because I was told that freshman generally didn't get awards and then I won two of them you did
indeed so I feel like this year I have higher expectations and a lot more nerves okay all right
what was it oh okay um compared to other years I have thought about this question before like
when I make films I'm like oh what was that but then I think about like freshman me when I came
to my first film festival and I was like the upperclassmen are so good and then I think about like
freshman me was be like they're looking like you guys so it's end of year three for you guys right
one more to go oh yeah you're you're you're the youngest of the of the of the quad here
what's next I think you have you already thought about what your projects are going to do for next
year not really not really we usually get um like set things that we're supposed to work on like
like movies with restrictions like the don't speak project so we kind of just I feel like
almost like we're making it up as we go that's basically film yeah I can be now with situations
like that we haven't really had a chance to just directly ask that when you get those projects
where it just don't speak or something along those lines how much terror is there before you
start going like okay we have to make the thing like how do you get into that mode when you're
giving that thought fair question what I know um was good about this year is that the the
projects actually in there are in our curriculum weren't changed so I already sort of knew what
was coming from talking to sophomores the year before and it had a little bit more time to think
about it so you cheat it yes perfect if you're not cheating you're not trying he's circumvented
the system sir it's 2025 we can just cheat you're not wrong
Martin what about you but to be honest um I think it's more difficult like it's
uh actually well you share with him and then they can share one so that way we we've got it we've
got it we got it we're getting a little feedback here yeah still a bit okay it's more difficult
for us to like you know bring up a uh note talking video mainly because uh bring some more ideas
you know I think this year was a little bit more fun I guess less I think less restrictions
well that don't speak thing my mama
that kid like I feel like that that took that to another level who is that kid
he's uh uh the main or director he was her or their friend I'm not entirely sure how they know him
like it's somebody's little brother or no like it's a friend of the friend's brother no a friend of a
friend's son I need a flowchart this is scary we have definitely hits the baseball have we got
to get to the families are they haven't bacon work into this at any point
I think right um but like nobody at this table besides us is old enough for that joke they know
Kevin bacon but they don't know six degrees oh they know it we don't know where he came from but
we love him he was very easy to work with that that moment right at the end when he realizes his
mother has walked past him nailed that absolutely the reaction big on it now you you got to do like
I said songwriting is that something you want to do more do you is that something that's more
of a hobby or are you kind of working is you are you trying to do both yeah so um I'm actually
in choir uh and I plan to do um music for a career um hopefully music therapy um and uh songwriting
is something that I do on my own pretty frequently um and I have a couple projects that are in the
worst and I don't know I don't know if they'll ever see the light day or not but um yeah they will if
you want it sure sure going back to the other end of the table I'm I'm all over the place there
what kind of movies do you like to watch I don't really watch really really I don't watch
like TV that much is there any is there any kind of a movie that is like it's a favorite that you
go to whether it's new old oh and watch your definition old I don't I don't want that answer
I wouldn't consider it old I like a lot of movies that come from like like early 2000s and then like
1990 right over that's all right that's all right I think that their cinematography is all
very good as and you guys working in cinematography people don't understand how important that is
because I can watch a movie and go this could have been shot so much better because it change it
can change the entire well before we even get too much further into that I know you had mentioned
about that you mostly focus on cinematography so I kind of want to hear what she had to say about
that they're enough as far as the cinematography from the early 2000s compared to what you're
working with now yeah I think there was more focus on it in 2000 and now it's like more I don't
want to say CGI but like it feels like you're just too focused on the practical effects and like
how it it looks in that regard rather than the actual composition of the shot and what would
you want to see done differently I would say more experimenting like people have gotten really
comfortable in just doing the same thing to the animation move along kind of thing okay I'd like
to see you know experimental color like like Rana's idea from the clinic like just more experimenting
okay is there is there a is there a film that you can go to and say that's the kind of film I
would want to shoot because of the way it comes across on screen okay his use of color yeah I love
color he knows how to put color into mood and mood into color he knows how to make nightmare fuel
that isn't actually nightmare fuel that's the crazy part yeah you look at something like pans labyrinth
yeah I love pans labyrinth I have I have a very dear friend that any if his name is on it she is in
the theater and pans labyrinth is that go to what was it like for you guys to interact with Jorge
today I mean he's he's been just very nice it's been it's been almost kind of surreal having such a
you know such a well-known individual here at our school just and one of the nicest people on the
planet just one of the nicest cats on the planet and having him here in our auditorium you know
telling a story was it it makes it really feel like like the work that we that we put into this
program really has paid off and to see somebody like that who I mean book of life is one of my
personal things you talk about composition and color but you can that style is and it's got a
beautiful story and it's one of those I have to watch by myself because I'm just gonna cry like a
child because it's I do that it commercials I'm fine you're not wrong I mean we we both do that
I had another quick because we were talking about someone talking about the last question for them
okay I'm gonna open it up but I definitely want to hear Martins on this if you're to shoot your
dream concept of a movie what are you shooting to be honest I think the concept of when I would think
of it's just what is happening in your moment right now just so like real time ready and okay real time
either if anything really the news anything I know there's a lot of things happening right now
and I think those what's happening right now is how's potential to be now to clarify in that
same scope I'm gonna try and be quick with this have you watched a lot of like Alex Garland's
recent that you're is that what you're kind of like angling at with a dramatic narrative that
fits the modern okay all right we're told we got to let you guys go back everything you guys did
was great great work tonight guys good looking forward to giving away some hard work because they
let us do that too we get to go up here you're just a little while and oh yes I'm excited for
this I am so happy the monster I don't care this is now my favorite moment well you know what
and I am going to let you take the lead because I have not seen you this excited about anything
yeah we have three students that have joined us and did you all work on monster yes sir
say introduce yourselves because people need to know who we are what happen to let me leave

go oh who who came up with the concept for Ron star first like where did this begin we had like
we were doing like a trailer project they were like you just have to do like an entire story
and then pick out the pieces you want and then make into a trailer and originally we were
having like this mysterious detective idea but we also had this like monster who lost his
scare idea and we decided to go with that one because other groups were doing similar
and the monsters outdressed me what is happening right now he's wearing a tie hard to be
well he's feeling good about all the gears what's really funny though is but but I want to get
her answer first absolutely on the how you're involved with the concept getting two monster oh yeah
so it was like a group thing to decide on what we were gonna do because we really both of the
ideas were very good and we didn't know which one to choose does this make him win the contest
and like ruin the other video is that part of the why he's wearing a tie of course yeah nice
well see when it said monster I was expecting like a pop video to come out of it you were expecting
space jam I wanted no well that's song in space jam the monster anthem thank you very much it is
also the team yeah but it's also a song and the soundtrack because I have to soundtrack I actually
have both of them it's hold hold that thought a second though but I really want to get to
something else because what we can't do on an auditory medium that is Addison actually has some
pretty impressive makeup done thank you thank you something right there is that something that
you want to focus on when you get more into film with the makeup or just it's just a hobby not
anything particular I think it'd be useful for like our film but that's that's campaigning and
I co-sign on this she also created that that's awesome scratch what was there any inspirations when
you were designing the monster that you modeled it after no okay so you just said we're doing this
don't want to get so it wasn't nightmare fuel or anything like that it is what it is how to be
vaguely scary for it to work but I also like I think too crazy because he's the whole point
that he lost his scare right yeah but in that same vein I thought it was really cool how you had
the narrative the story the emotion along with it where it would be real easy to take I feel like
calling it a monstrosity is a compliment taking a little bit of a play on words but taking the
monstrosity and giving it heart and giving the story emotion how did that come together in the group
work oh I started off with just a premise we were like we don't we could just make a trailer
about a monster being scary but like we could go we could go further than that you know yeah we
have fleshed out I mean we wanted to have something that was like a combination of horror because
Addison's really good at that but we also wanted to have like a deep storyline and that's kind
of what we created combined the two successfully I might add do you want to take it and make more of
an actual short film from it now that you've done the trailer oh no yeah to write a story so there's
a story yeah I don't know he's kind of a pain to film he's a diva he's a diva only works at golden
hour both of his eyes fell off well filming I don't know if you could tell there was like three shots
where his eyes are just I know that kind of added to the ambiance I thought that was on purpose I
thought it was I gave it credit yeah works works yeah maybe sometimes accidents are the happiest part
so you guys gonna stick with this for the rest of your high school career at least you think you
think you're gonna keep doing film all the way through I'm not sure at least next year
hold on a second oh mr. Schubert's actually just make sure people get cookie the fearless leader
wants to make sure everybody has cookie okay I so you're saying that you you're gonna stick with it
for at least another year yes is there something you're thinking of more or is it just I'm thinking
more than focusing on psychology if I like that I'm taking the class next year and then if I
really like it I'm just gonna go fully with that okay I mean I'm Addison double liking I'm gonna
need therapy so that works out nicely for that that'll work I do plan to continue for the next four
year three three I think it's a it's a really flexible class like you get like one prompt and you
can just do whatever with it and I've learned a lot we have like nice equipment and everyone in
there is really nice and I just I like the environment so yeah I also plan to continue for the rest
of the high school because as Addison said everyone in there is really supportive and it's really
flexible and I'm also in band which takes up so much time all right band kids unite yeah very much
but this is such an amazing program because I'm able to do both
I either I just my brain locked I'm old well if you're gonna stick with it for the four years
is there any chance or hope that you might want to go into it after I don't really want to work
in the industry but I just want to enjoy high school and right now this is what I enjoy I don't
really want to make something like that into like a job because I don't think I'd be able to
enjoy it after that once it becomes work it's no longer fun okay what's the next movie coming up
you're looking forward to seeing nothing I don't know I don't really catch up on it it's it's
amazing how many times we get that answer they're busy making their own like making it but like
you know I'm mad at it I'm here for it anything that you're looking forward to
not really see I just I'm so immersed in film that I'm always looking for something well it is
part of our deal yeah that's part of what we do we do the reviews but I but I even even I go
to movies on my own true like I saw Thunderbolts asterisk on my own now if there isn't any movies
that you're looking forward to is there any projects or TV or anything that's like really gets
your creative juices going that you really get excited about I would I would like to make a musical
I think like all the ones I saw I thought that was just so fun and then maybe a horror but I don't
really know how to do horror without it looking kind of like copy and paste so what if you do a horror
musical we need Todd we need Todd to think we need Todd is a thing yeah I've never seen it right okay

of words to say we've got more people joining us because that's what we do now if you prefer you

Beach expert all me and I worked on the backgrounds and sound design for the movie Haraya
and your name is on that poster tell everybody why um because I did the
the t-shirt design this year which I'm currently modeling the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice film club
film club yeah I worked for a long time on it it was a lot of trial and error back and forth with
I guess my boss miss you where she did a lot of the design I wish she was here to hear that I really do
oh where is she we actually have to see your film twice this year yes because it was featured
earlier this year how was it watching it this time versus watching it back at uh
bankhead thank you I keep saying bulkhead for some reason and nobody knows why
uh I think it was less scary this time than last time but it's still embarrassing to see my name on
the screen how but why is it embarrassing you did could it's a really phenomenal film
and it also goes to you as well like it's not just a one person joe here
most of the work that's be honest I saw your name pop up I'm an awful lot of movies I understand
where you're getting wrong it's not like you did one thing I was like there she's good but there she
is good I distinctly like I was so a little peek behind the curtain is we actually get the movies
in advance for the judges side so we were doing ours yesterday and we were given a list of what
the order was I saw Haraya on the list and I got all excited and then it wasn't in the same
place that I got I was mad he was very genuinely upset because I enjoyed Haraya years and the one
that was listed after were flipped yep so it was still there but I wasn't actually paying attention
to the list I was just watching them as they happened I was like oh yeah I remember this one
now we do voting through multiple pages so I was taking just to clarify but I was genuinely
excited like where did the concept come up like where did you come up with that just for the story
uh honestly I don't remember that's okay I remember I came up with the idea over the summer because
I needed something for my IV personal project okay and this you know it's it's about a young girl
who who's who learns that it's okay to not be okay yep and May is mental health awareness
month so that all works out very nicely that's why I I what I really liked about it isn't really
does show like just because somebody says they're okay because everybody keeps asking are you okay
yeah yeah yeah and then you see her googling am I okay yeah it was just like oh god punch at the end
there was definitely a lot of emotion and connective tissue feeling in there now
she was uh the interest was saying that you had most of the work but where can you give her credit
for coming in and helping make this the great picture it was he took a lot of the time off my
hands because that would have been so scary because she helped a lot with the backgrounds which I
was definitely not prepared for and like my picture you helped out a little bit with the music too
are you able to kind of exhale a little bit now we've been through the thing and now it's been
shown and now we can just kind of hang out and be cool are you so because you know we got to go do
awards are you still are you still still got some butterflies working from that yeah I'm hungry you
wouldn't mean well wait wait wait the question is is she hungry for food because I can see the
raising gains plate shout out raising gains or are you having that moment where you're like I know
my work is good I'm hungry for awards no free ads mostly food mostly food okay but that's not
all food because at least we got her around to understanding yeah there is definitely awards in
there because if you're not doing it and you're either not having fun or not making awards or
winning awards where do you see yourself going with this from film I hope to keep doing making
animations on my own okay I think they're fun it's stressful at the time limit but I think I'll
be able to do more now when you say in the future are you talking about making this a career or
are you talking about through school okay so you'd be an independent animator in that scope okay
and how about you I'm actually dropping film next year I'm not gonna continue in the program I'm
actually shocked as am I just doesn't think my schedule I have a lot going on next year but I do I
appreciate a lot of the things I've learned in this experience and I think in the future I will
make a lot of my own short films just like even if I don't end up doing film in college just
as an independent animator of because I do a lot of different awards okay awesome but so you're
saying that for high school you're over booked but when you but when you get to maybe college or
something you'd get back into film okay you know you're gonna have to pick up the slack when she's
oh I'm not doing film next year oh that's over too all right we're told you guys got to go do stuff
so thank you guys yes go go have fun thank you guys here just a little while and Don is telling me

they're a huge non-profit that raises money every year they do a big gala big tie a black tie
dinner yeah okay I'm gonna go in and do red carpet photos okay okay for an hour and a half
before which damn they're killed and then I shoot two and a half hour game oh god love you that's
