My name is Rob, I'm the executive producer of the clubhouse podcast, and I know a thing
or two about singing and stuff.
But I'm not alone for this particular episode, joining me across the desk as he tends
to do is my co-host and a man that's been doing a little singing organized style a lot
longer than I have.
He is Chad, welcome sir.

Also joining us across the desk is a man that once tried to carry a tune, but there
was a hole in the bucket.
He is the official fact checker of this show.
You may know him as fun, don't go, but his mom and even don't for him, don't for him,
sir.
I got no response to that, like whatsoever.
Yeah, you got to, you got to love the creativity that you see that coming, those are, hold
the bucket, 96 miles an hour right down the gut, baby.
Whatever we do one of these things, it is to review something in this particular episode
is no different.
We are here today to review for you a movie that it's called Sing.
It is directed by Garth Jennings and Christophe, Lord Delay, it is an animated film.
Yes sir, we got to take someone we have to take for a while to talk straight to that
microphone down.
There we go.
We got to take our good friend Mary Ann and everybody at Sly Fox.

Such fans of those guys, and especially thank you, Mary, and for having us out for
this.
I'm, again, right up front, I'm going to put out their own front treat.
I had a lot of fun with this.
So do that.
This movie runs an hour eight.
I'm on an hour eight, a hundred and eight minutes.
That's an hour 48.
This is close to an hour 50.
And you're saying, wait a minute Rob, didn't you say this was an animated film?
I did say this was an animated film.
But I will tell you something, an hour 48 did not feel like an hour 48.
Let's just write off the top.
The pacing on this thing was quick, but not break neck.
It was perfect and this movie moved along nicely.

100% on that one.
Chad, you were there?
Absolutely, I did.
That was a little concerned about the runtime going in, but man, it moves, they tell
the opening, like, I guess the opening probably at 5 to 10 minutes, let's let you know
about all the characters.
And it goes back and forth, but not in a way that it confuses you.
Basically here's the deal.
Matthew McConaughey, man, let's take a shirt off and tell you what.
He plays a koala named Buster Moon, who runs a theater in his local town.
That was bought for him by his father.
He's probably running on some tough times, behind on his bills, and about to get shit
foreclosed on.
So he decides to have this singing competition.
He invites people from all over town, and due to a clerical error, what starts as a $1,000
prize turns into a $100,000 prize, which is a problem, because Buster and God, they're
kind of cash.
He can't keep a light on.
So everybody and their brother shows up to audition for this thing.
He narrows it down to just a select group of people that he's going to have compete.
That's because part of the team is I want to go on this.
But let me give you some of the other voice cast in this.
Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlet Johansson, John C. Riley, American Idol
Contestant Tori Kelly, Taren Edgerton, Yes, the Kid from Kingsman, Nick Crowl, Nick
Offerman, one of the directors actually plays a voice in this, Peter Seraphina Whitts
is in this.
Beck Bennett, Leslie Jones, J. Farrow, Jennifer Saunders, do I need to keep going?
I don't know if you can.
You're about to run out of air.
This thing has a huge cast in it, and you would think to yourself, Robert, the cast like
this does it work?
Absolutely this work, I just didn't work.
This movie is so much fun.
I really had a great time watching this movie, and I will tell you, if you take your kids
to this, do not leave the theater during the audition sequence.
That's all I'm saying.
That was rolling.
The animals' auditioning for this show, I almost had tears rolling out of my eyes.
I'm just trying to find a time to use everything on that.
And it's a called J pop, which yeah, J pop.
And that's all I have to say about that, because I don't even want to go any deeper.
Because that alone, I almost fell out of my chair.
You know, this just hit me like a ton of bricks.
I just realized it's Garth Jennings, the director, the primary director that plays the
secretary.
Yeah.
I was not expecting that, was it eyeball that doesn't seem to want to stay and it's
suck it.
Arguably my favorite character in a whole dead game thing.
Actually, I think my favorite character has to be Knit Kroll's character.
I was he the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, yes, the glitter pig, so to speak.
I mean, outside of the main cast, because I really think that Terran Edgerton playing
Johnny, who is, he's a, he's a gorilla, who's dead as a criminal, and his dad wants
him to follow on his footsteps, and really all he wants to do is do music.
And his song choices, oh my God.
Yeah.
And that's another thing.
Oh, Rob, it's a musical, and it's a bunch of music, I don't know.
You know, 90% of the, I don't know what's there like six original songs out of about
80 in this film, and just said they do the way that some of these songs are portrayed.
It songs I wouldn't be caught dead listening to their actual, you know, regular pot versions
on radio.
I was role 85 hit songs from the 1940s until present day.
God Almighty.
And I will say the following.
Come, my lady.
Come, come, my lady.
That's all I'm saying.
Well, speaking of the voicing and singing, I really have to, if I give that, there's
a compliment I can give to animated features.
Okay.
When I hear the voice in after a minute or two, I don't think of that person.
Absolutely.
And this happened so much in this film.
I did not think of Matthew McConaughey, Mr. Arad Arad Arad Arad from Days and Abuse.
I thought of him as a kid.
He might be the only one that I picked out, but it wasn't in a bad way, and I just
struggle.
I'm like, that is McConaughey, right?
You know, you know, when the compliment quality will take a shirt off to a place where
they didn't go into that mode.
He didn't go into full on Maddie Mac mode, but I mean, well, it's gonna happen.
Just stop it.
Like Joe Hanson, like you, I think she was great.
I think you and I both guys, okay, so you raise her hash the porcupine.
Great performance there.
And I'm not a huge Reese with her spoon fan, but I really enjoyed her as Rosie.
It was really even killed.
Yes.
Totally.
And you know, I'm a big John C. Riley fan.
You put him in just about anything, I'm in.
You know, Nick Offerman's not in it a lot, but he's enough to make it to make an impact.
It's Nick.
It's Ron Swanson.
It's, there's nothing about this movie.
I didn't absolutely love that animation was beautiful.
The animation looked great.
There's a strong story behind it, too, that brings a really good message to kids about
not being ashamed of who you are and about family and about not being afraid to rely on
your friends when things are down.
There's nothing about this movie that you will regret sitting through.
And I talk to other people that are friends of ours in the Dallas press community that are
saying the exact same things.
I saw the the director's previous big big outing, he's the guy that did these screen
translation of hitchhikers guy to the galaxy.
Some people loved it.
Some people just kind of man.
I wasn't really married to that material, but he was a competent director and I'd always
wanted to see his follow up son of Rambo, which I never did get a chance to see.
But this, he crushed it and I just also said this shout out to illumination pictures
with the way they opened this film.
And I don't want to give it away, but the illumination studio's title card was one of
the most brilliant things I've seen in a long time and probably won't take you much to
figure it out.
And plus the fact of I do have a bias.
Now did you notice the little bit at the end of it?
Can we talk about that?
Ask me off here because I don't want to ruin it for people that haven't seen it.
From the opening, from that point forward, I was like, okay, you now have my attention.
And this thing is so much fun.
Don't worry about being bored when you bring in the kids because it's good for adults.
It's good for everybody.
Yeah, yeah, for you, for you, dads that are going to get roped in the seat, taking your
kids to go see this, don't worry.
You're going to enjoy it.
And another good sign that we have on stuff like this is that it is a film that's
the kids when we were at the press screening, they were real focused, they were focused.
Yeah, they were focused.
And when you watch a film, and Chad looks at me and says, that film just made a Taylor
Swift song palatable for me, that's a good day.
Yeah, that's a good day.
This was a warped.
The T-Swizzle brought it for him.
And every song choice I thought fit perfectly, it's j-
It could have messaged too, absolutely.
This is such a great movie for everybody, especially in the holidays season in a
time where we need distractions.
This movie is a perfect strategy.
Yeah, I didn't get preachy, you know, it just made you feel good about yourself.
It almost forces you to feel good about yourself in a good way.
It's good therapy.
It's good movie therapy.
It really is.
I mean, is there anything else we need to say before we go ready on this thing?
No.
Here's how this works.
We're not going to give you thumbs up thumbs down, letter grades, numbers.
We're not doing anything like that.
We're a little bit different.
Our audience, when we affectionately refer to as the empire, they want us to dig deeper.
We're good to dig deeper.
Two questions.
First question I'm going to ask these gentlemen is, would you see this film again
that the answer is no, we're done here.
But if the answer is yes, here's our spectrum of ratings from top to bottom.
Full price in an evening show, twilight, matinee, early morning, second run, red box,
Netflix, cable, Chad, would you see this again?
Yes.
How far are you willing to go?
I'd go the full money on it.
So you're full price to the theater.
Yeah.
And I really think this would be a blast for some place like Alamo to do a themed.
Yeah.
Like a single one?
Yeah.
Absolutely.
Absolutely.
I'm a bird for it.
Do I want to see this again?
Oh, definitely.
How far?
I would say with the family a total family night day, whatever, twilight, matinee, whatever.
It's a good film to take the family to movie do regardless.
I would see this again.
I would pay for price.
I will probably also own this on Blue Right.
Absolutely.
This will be a perfect way too good.
The soundtrack would be worth it.
This movie is so much fun.
This movie is so much fun.
It may Jennifer Hudson's voice dealable for me.
That is the conflict.
And you know I'm not a fan of Jennifer Hudson.
Yes, I do know all too well.
So what it does for the T-swizzle for you, does for Jennifer Hudson for me.
That's a win, win, win, win, win, win, win.
