We are live tonight at Garland High School in Garland, Texas downtown Garland, if you will,
Ireland from King of the Hale, actually that is true, that's what it's based on, but it's
not all like that, but we just got finished watching and we're here to talk to some people
involved.
It is the 12th annual real owl cinema film festival.
This is a, this is all student films from Garland High School, kids on all levels, all
grades of high school age.
We just watched 41 films in two hours and seven minutes, and when I say we are industry
judges, we are industry judges, we got to judge the films and after the show tonight,
after we get off air, we are going back to the auditorium where we are going to be presenting
the awards that the judges and there's, we are three of the five, we are 60% of the
judging panel.
What we didn't know until we got here tonight is that the other 40% are friends of the
show.
We're not a favorite people in the world.
Who is it?
Kelly Kitchell, she's a singer and her husband.
Both of you.
That was a pleasant surprise.
Yes.
So really, how can we clubhouse, the clubhouse family has actually doing the thing tonight?
And we're going to Facebook live this thing tonight.

We thought it was four, but since Kelly and her husband are here, we want them to put

So they're going to be presenting the up-and-coming actor or actress.
It's all one category, which I thought was very interesting.

So Don is going to be presenting the best comedy.
Chad will be presenting the best drama, and I will be presenting the best film overall
from the judges.
We thought we'd split it up a little bit.

I've never two or three of them.
I mean, there are some great stuff here, and by kids that at my age, I'm so not that
good.
You know what I mean?
I'm so not good at that.
And these kids are amazing.
Absolutely amazing.
I really wasn't impressed by a lot of these films that we saw.
Some great visionary work, some very funny stuff out there, some really good dramatic work
as well.
You know, we made it tonight, seeing the next big thing.

And Kelly was saying she's like, we didn't need that stadium seating.
And like our stadium seating was like a curved ground.
That was pretty much how that worked.

I mean, we didn't see all of the films.
We actually got to see some of them earlier today because the organizers here knew that
we were going to have to come here and start this puppy.
And so we, we would be on the air and ready to go by the time the students get here.
Because that's important.
You know, we're a professional organization.
So professional that I can't even keep stuff from falling on the ground.
But we do want to send out a shout out to the Schubert's who got us into this deal
and we're our contacts and got us set up really nicely so that we could bring the show
live to the Empire.

And we actually saw a film tonight with a did you notice that in one of the films that

We had a great time last night at House of Blues and shout out to House of Blues.

Right into an old bartender friend of mine that used to work at a former place that
I worked at.

He had my huge beard and I was like, oh my god, that is you.
He recognized me and that helped.
I turned around and you were gone and you came back and you were like, oh, I'm working
the room bro.
I can work in the room.
But yeah.
If you have the opportunity to catch these guys when they're on the road, if you catch
one of them coming to your neck of the woods, do yourself a solid and go check these
guys.
And so let's get back to talk about what we just did.
I'm always amazed, number one, at that school's get to do this.
I mean, we couldn't just because the technology isn't what it is now.
The fact that these kids are using some great technology to make some great films.
Well, like you'll hear a lot of the modern filmmakers tell you that everybody can be a
filmmaker.
The tools are there.
It's just a matter of knowing how to use them or utilize them properly.
And they do.
And they do.
These kids really get a couple of great classic jokes turned into short films, which I
thought was awesome.
I'm going to say is spaghetti.

I got to be honest.
I want to put me out of nowhere.
Yeah.
That one kind of caught me off guard.

You got something going on.
But definitely caught me off guard.

Probably graduating within the next seven days or so, I would say.
Others of them with a longer high school career ahead of them.
I think I've talked to more high schoolers in the last 48 hours and I've talked to
in the last 20 years.
I don't know why.
We've been kind of inundated by it.

We've been getting work done.
We've been doing work, sir.
That's why we give a little vacation after this.

This year, I am so proud of our department.
We had some amazing films this year.
We were actually two hours long.

And you kept to our attention, which is for two old men, two hours and seven is a long
time.
But I, I, I, I hear correctly in the beginning that this is the most students the program
has ever had and it's going to have almost twice as many next year.
Yeah, it's good.

This is awesome.
We're actually getting an additional freshman class.
So that's great.
Mine class unfortunately is kind of small, but we're still a very strong class.
You, you have quality over quantity.
I've always said there's nothing wrong with that.
So this is the 12th annual has the program itself been around longer or is just the 12th
year of the program itself.
Um, I think it's been a little longer.
Exactly.
I think it's just like a few years after, but each year our program and our film festival
keeps getting bigger and better.
So I'm excited to see for next year.
I mean, we were talking before you guys got here.
Your auditorium is easily twice the size of my auditorium when I was in high school.
And that you had a really good crowd in there.
I mean, there was probably almost filled up that center section if I looked at it.
Is the attendance, I mean, this is your third year in the program.
Has the, have you seen the attendance get bigger and bigger or is there just kind of normally
what it was?
Yeah.
I think our record breaking near was our tenth year anniversary and two years ago.
Okay.
So ever since then, it's just skyrocketed.
Well that was your freshman year.
So of course, that's going to set the bar kind to high.
Yeah.
I think have you thought about post high school yet or you just like, let me get to my senior
year right now?
I have actually, and I want to be a producer in film.
Oh, that's a lot of work that there's no days off for that.
All right.
So we're at a film festival and we're talking to kids at our film makers right now.
What's the one movie you're waiting to see?
Oh, and theater, just like the movie I have to see right now.

I'm a little nerdy, but I want to see Spider-Man homecoming next month.
Yeah.

It's a geeks are nerds with social skills.

I ignore the same rainy trilogy, just because I couldn't stand it.
I loved both amazing films, not everybody enjoyed the second one.
I could get past Jamie Fox, and that was fine.

Yeah.
I did the Ukrainian, the night after Christmas, and another holiday.

These are three films in the festival.
Talk about both of you guys talk about just...
How long did you have to film it?
Was it filmed over the entire year
or were you given a specific window?
I don't know.
You start.
So no, we have a project, each cycle.
So we have around like six weeks if we're lucky to film one film.
But for that from soup to nuts, or do you already have...
So from concept to delivery six weeks.
Six weeks.
So we get a preproduction, production, and post-production phase.
And that's about like two weeks on each.
Wow.
Yeah.
And some of the things that...
What I really dug about this is some of the kids just did trailers.
Like, I'm going to do a trailer for this kind of a movie.
Which I thought was cool.
And then some of the kids, like some of them were,
what, 38 seconds, some of them were as long as seven to eight minutes.
Which I thought was a really good mix
that you didn't have things that were too long,
you didn't have things that were too short.
How do you decide, do you have a limit,
a time limit you have to work within?
Or do you just kind of go with it
and this is kind of where it needs to be?
All right.
So every year we have projects, right,
that Schubert assigns us, our teacher, Mr. Schubert.
So we get these projects and they're, you know,
make a documentary, make a trailer.
And, or just different things.
So the time limits depend on what project it is
and what year you're in.
So usually, third year, fourth year
so make longer projects than first year, second year's.
But we usually don't really follow the project guidelines
for the time, just because it goes over, like, every time.
So you just stick it to the man,
that's what you say.

Do you guys pick which ones you submit
or of all the projects you do
does the staff pick what they're going to be in the festival?
How does that work?
So we submit what we want to submit.
So we can submit all the films we work that year
or we can only submit one.
And then from that fourth, Mr. Schubert goes
and like, netted, like, votes it down, saying,
which one's good, which one's not, and then goes from there?
When do you find out what makes it in and what doesn't?
We found out last Friday, I think.
Oh, wow.
So you've got like a week.
Yeah, we have a week of anticipation.
So how long does the submit?
I mean, how long did you have to wait?
How long was the submission process?
I think what he does is we just submit it.
And then there's a deadline for submission.
And then.
So where was that deadline?
Also, wait, it was like 12.
Yeah, the 12 or something.
Now you're making me do math.
Hold on.
Yeah, I don't know.
So there's only a week between that submission deadline
and when he told everybody what it was.
So in that week, he goes in and he stays after school every day
for like 20 hours and likes a narnia, apparently.
He paints, taking the watches, all of our trash,
and the such are, sorry, sorry, sorry.

One, man's trash isn't that a man's trash.

And then compiles it into a watchable list.
OK, so question of the night, because whenever we do a festival
like this, we always have a question that we ask all of our guests,
we just ask the security we're going to ask you.
What's the one movie you're dying to see right now?
Baby driver.
We are screening that next month.

We are going to screen that next month.
This is a film that I think is going to take a lot of people
off guard.
Because it's not a film that's really getting a lot of promotion.
We've heard about it through one of our vendors.
We get to do movie screenings and things like that.
And when the trailer dropped, we got an email on it.
And I was like, this is going to be fun.
And now the word of mouth is starting to get out.
I've got people that are already calming,
and like, do you have a plus one?
I'm like, you know, take a brother to watch.
Where's that postcard from the mom thing again?
Yeah, my mom's very unbiased when it comes to plus one.
This is true.
So you just say you were third year?
Yeah, third year also.
OK, so you've got another year to go.
Have you thought about post high school
or are you just kind of just getting to that right now?
All right.
So I'm at a crossroads between, if I want to get a real job,
or go to film.
And I could either do, you can do both.
Yeah, I can do.
I could either do mechanical engineering or pursue
like direct film.
But I think I'm trying to look into doing both.
Like what you've said, and work in like set design
or special effects, visual effects for actual movie sets.
So you talk about visual effects.
Yeah.
The Ukrainian.

We're all just about.

And that, again, six weeks cycle.

So as students of film, which I love that I hate to say this way,
but you kids today, who influences you?
Filmmaker-wise.
Many directors that I enjoy.

I actually made a presentation where I had to choose a film that I like,
but I couldn't.
So I made a PowerPoint over five different directors and films.
What do you want to do?
So I did Quentin Tarantino.
Good choice.

I did Wes Anderson.
Oh, that's a good choice.
And then I did several others.
I like Damian Jambel.
He's really good.
It was interesting to see how he compared different shots from other classic films
and incorporated his film.
A lot while in is one of those films that you can appreciate on the surface.
But if you are a student of film,
you can actually appreciate it for what it is.
It's crazy.
And I love the art direction and the cinematography
and it's just a couple of times.
Yeah, we screened that.
We actually got a squeak.
She got a scraper copy of that.
It's one side of the home.

No, we're really not.
But what I did dug up about it, when I said in my review
when I wrote it is, when I was a kid,
there actually used to be cartoons on Saturday mornings.
Many, many years ago, when dinosaurs were on the earth.
And right after cartoons,
you'd always have like Tarzan theater or Kung Fu theater.
One of the things they would do is they would show the old ginger
Roger Freda Stairs films from the 40s and 50s.
And that's what I dug about law online is it was a nod
to those films, but it was done in a modern style.
It was a throwback, which is why I think a lot of people
didn't quite get it because they didn't understand
the shooting style of it.
I was like, well, they were floating.
I'm like, yeah, but that's what those films did.
It was then surrealism of it that worked into the story.
Who influences you, sir?
John Lassiter, Egoray, and also Probably Damian Juzel?
Yeah.
Lassiter.
I like both of those names.
Right.
Although I'm going to be honest with you.
And we've talked about this before.
And glad Wright didn't direct it, man.
Oh, I don't know about that.
Well, did you read the script he wanted to do?
No, I didn't.
He wanted to just be an aunt that becomes a man.
Right.
That's not the story.
He said the comic book character.
Yeah.
That's not the story, man.
So, that's why it was glad he didn't do it.
Well, I mean, you can still see the Egoray's influence in the movie.
Oh, absolutely.
Yeah.
Through the train scene with the twice down.
I love that.
I was so glad that that movie came out as well as it did.
Yeah.
And why more people, and I don't want to mention any names with their initials
or Warner Brothers, are not paying attention to what Disney's doing with these
Marvel films.
Exactly.
You know, it's like, we're going to take the most obscure character and we're going
to make you love them.
Mm-hmm.
And that's what they did.
Really?
You know, you need to even take a character like Thor.
Which I said Thor was going to be a tough film to do.
Yeah.
And he killed it.
Even Cap is a very difficult, especially from a costuming standpoint.
That's a tough thing to do.
And then I saw the film and I was like, well, somebody's cracked the code.
And it ain't me.
I've liked the first two Thor films, but I don't think they've quite gotten it there.
I like the first one better than I like the dark.
Yeah.
The dark world was weird for me.
But this one coming up.
Ragnarok looks, I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
It looks fun.
I don't think it looks as good as like cinematography or like just direction-wise
as good as the first Iron Man, first Captain America, both guarding together.
Well, I think with Ragnarok, I think they're just kind of letting back a little bit
and just having fun with it.
Yeah.
I think that from the trailers, you can tell they're just trying to have fun with it.
Yeah.
And that's really what, as we're leading up to infinity war with it next year.
I believe it or not.
I guess.
You're, and we talked about this on our show a couple of ways.
You rise between those two films and your next Avengers film.
A billion dollars is going to be a spent on three films.
And the first one will make it back in a week and a half.
A billion dollars is hope for my future.
I don't know.
We'll see.

Wasn't even a thing because wasn't stupid boat movie.
The first billion dollar box office film.
That's what he calls Titanic.

LA confidential was a better view on that year.

And LA confidential was a much better film that year.
That was the only time in my lifetime.
I've seen every best picture nominee in a theater.

When you're going into a year, do you know what kinds of assignments are going
because it's the same path every year where does he switch up the assignments
styles every year?
It really depends on how well the current class, like say this year's class,
it does with each film assignment.
So a film assignment doesn't do as well, then he just acts it.
And he creates a different one to like better appease when he's community.
I know there was one in the past that didn't really work out.
That was one shot.
And that's all you got for the entire film.
Oh, wow.
And people like they couldn't do that.

It was bird man.
Well, even bird man didn't do that.
A bird man had like rope style.
But she did it brilliantly.
Yeah.
Like yeah.
Although, I mean, I didn't think it was as a film.
It was a brilliant film.
I respected for what it was.

And he looks at each year and it means it makes better projects so we can just

with the USA Film Festival, which got us here.

These last eight weeks have just been full throttle.
And that's a good thing.
It is a really good thing.
I mean, we've done more shows out of studio
by this point in the calendar year than I think we've done ever in a full calendar.
Oh my gosh.
I mean, we've done one studio show, maybe two in the last two months.
Uh huh.
It's been filmed festivals and we did the high school musical awards on Thursday night,
which was so much fun.
That's so great.
Well, it's a lot.
Hot property.
I'm hoping.

So we can't talk about some of the voting we did.

How hard was it for you because not only were we voting for our favorites,
but we were also asked to give our notes as the programs we're going on.
Yes.
How difficult was that for you guys to give those notes that they're going to be shared with the kids?
I know.
I know.
Well, you know, I really tried to find things that I thought would be helpful for future reference.
Indeed.
You know, I mean, I did did.
They did note some things that were in those particular films that we saw.
But I'm hoping that there were things that they could use to say,
okay, maybe we need to think more or spend more time on editing this time,
or, you know, or what.
Tightening up the pacing a little bit.
Yeah.
Whatever it happened to be.
I wanted.
I wanted to hopefully offer that.
And I'll tell you what impressed me the most is some of the uses of the technology.

Like the whole time I kept thinking of myself, okay,
what kind of equipment did they have access to?
Yeah.
Because you can film quality movies on your phone now.
Yeah, you can.
You know, and there were definitely some themes in some of the notes that I was giving.
But there wasn't a time where I would just like.

I mean, every one of these was very, very entertaining.
And for 41 films.
I know.
I love how they were trailers for stuff.
I know.
That was awesome.
Well, and, you know, apparently the trailers are part of the first year.
But, um, curriculum.
Okay.
And so.
But, hello.
I was really impressed with the trailers.
And I thought, well, and we don't talk enough about this kind of thing when we do festivals
like this program.
The program itself was put together very, very well.
Because for us as judges, you know, I needed to look ahead.
Okay, how long is the next film.
So I need to know how much time I have to make to take my notes.
The flow of the program itself was really easy to follow.
So we knew what programs were coming up.
What films were going to be shown.
And a couple of really strong.
I think the longest one was what?
Eight minutes?
A couple of.
Yeah.
A couple of really strong documentary shorts in this that I was very impressed with.
Yeah.
Hit me from out of nowhere.
And some bold subject matters too.
Yeah.
There was a couple of subject matter choices where I actually wrote in my notes.
And I'm not afraid to say this.
Bold choice.
Yeah.
Because they tackled some subjects that made me go.
Wow.

Yeah.
Okay, let me see how you're going to handle this.
And it was handled in a very mature manner.
Yes, it was.

I was really impressed with how articulate the students were in the stock community.
Absolutely.
I mean, you know, because there's they're speaking without a script and, you know, without practicing much of the time.
And the vulnerability that the filmmakers were able to show.

I thought was really, really good.

Now we can't really talk too deeply about our thoughts because we work two of the five judges.

But I can say overall, I enjoyed that film.

I died my hair in the middle shooting.

The director was like, are you kidding me?
Especially because I'm the one who's always like continuity is key.
And then I showed up with blue hair.

But I'll tell you this.
It didn't take me out of it.

Because the way you guys shot it was so well done that it didn't, like, something.
Because I am big on continuity myself.

How are you feeling right now?
I'm feeling good.
It's my senior year.
And I feel like our department has put out a lot of good films today.
I'm super happy.
And the amount that your program has grown is just amazing.
I'm really excited for where this is going.
They said that you've got to just as many for next year as you have for this year.
We're supposed to be getting at least 20 more people in our program.
That's insane.
Yeah.
That is insane.
It's weird getting a call saying you have to cut your film down by three minutes.
Because we want freshmen to have their films in.
And how does that work for you?
Do you just, how much agony does that cause you when they say you have to have three minutes
out of your film?
Do you kind of have an idea at the time of where you can trim back?
Or is it, is it one of those like, oh my god, what am I going to do?
I'm huge on artistic integrity.
So I was like, I don't want to cut this.
So I kind of put my foot down for a second and then he lifted it up and he was like, this doesn't mean it's a bad film.
It means we have a lot of talent here.
And it was at a point where I knew that we elaborate.
We elaborate.
We spoke a lot on how we felt.
I'm really anxious right now.
So I'm going to wrap around the IT.
We spoke a lot about how we felt about film because this is something we've been in for four years.
So we were still able to show people how we felt without taking everyone else out of the program.
Where you had it in fall?
I'm headed to UNT to study cinematic arts.
And then if I do well enough, I'm going to pick up scholarships and go to UT.
Fair enough.

I want to do.
What brought us to this story is my buddy calling calls me up one day.
He says, I want to do a film that's not necessarily part of the film program.
I got a good bulk of the script done, but could I get some help and we would also need our stars.
And so I said to myself.

And usually, I don't get to see that kind of a passion from the film students.
And I saw that he really believed in this project.
And I wanted to help and make it as good as it could be.
Now, are you guys really close like outside of the outside of the film?
Like, were you friends before you even got into the film program?

I've been friends with Colin for a few years.
Now, when he needs an odd man for a film, he calls up a mere chin.

There was a palpable chemistry between you guys.
Like, you could definitely tell.

We've been competing on our teams to bait team for a couple of years now.

Because where are you at in your article careers?
We're both juniors right now.

We are in a GHS film department film too.
So you're all three sophomores?

Your season veterans now.
You've gotten through freshman year.
Then you got to work out the awkwardness of sophomore year.
How many films did you guys work on that run in the festival?
I personally worked on two.
Okay.
I believe I worked on three.

I did so many.
I don't even know anymore.
This is a really cool deal that you guys are doing.
Talk about the process of going through a day like this.
Do you, is it an all day process for you guys as students?
Or do you just kind of show up when it's time to watch the movie and then I'm good from there?
Practically is an everyday process like we'll have some days where we have to work on there on our film.
And also some personal time.
We have to devote it.
And then also the editing where it takes up a hall hall but a car.
All right.
Class time.
And then that's when we'll shoot you.
But on a day like today where it's the day of the festival.
Is this an all day process or do you just kind of get up whenever you get up?
Do you even think about what tonight's going to be before you get here?
Or is it just like I'll worry about it when I get to the auditorium?
I was definitely really excited coming into today.
Seeing my film and seeing everything that everyone works so hard on.
I know that a bunch of people in the film industry.
Or our film club came in really early and had a working on this specific day for a long time.
And so seeing really like what they came up with and the right carpet.
It was amazing.
That's a pretty cool little deal.
Yeah.
And just like treating us like how we feel inside.
Because we're so proud of this and they made us feel proud of it.
Now is this something that you're looking at from day one of the school year?
Because you're doing films throughout the year.
In a six weeks turnaround time, which I still melt my brain that you guys only have six weeks.
And you put out this kind of product.
The films are great.
You guys do an amazing job.
Are you thinking about that on day one of school?
Like I got to make sure that I get the right things for the festival.
Or is it more of, you know what?
I'm going to do what I'm going to do if it gets in a festival great.
Get right on top of that mic from my friend.
We start thinking about making our films on day one.
We're aiming to put our films into the festival.
But then sometimes our ideas aren't exactly the best.
Or sometimes the film doesn't end up the way we wanted to be.
So as the year goes closer to the and closer to the film festival.
Start sorting out which ones we like the most.
And then we start editing on those.
And then put the best of the best in our festival.
So I mean this is how many projects do you do per year?
We do six.
We have six weeks.
And so we usually work them on six projects.
One per six weeks.
But there's a lot of us that are also involved in other things.
And so you will see us occasionally creating films on our own time.
So it's usually more than six because we're so passionate about what we do.
And the art worm that we and we love it so much that we pick it up out of school.
And so working on it outside of school.
It's just really, it's a really making experience.
What kind of equipment you get to use?
You really haven't even talked about that yet.
Yeah, yeah.
The technical side we had named touched on.
We talked about news.
Not top of the line, but more of these things equipment.
Like we have a 4K camera.
Nice.
We have, you know, standard to tripod and lighting equipment.
And also a sound design and sound design technology.
Do you pick the people, like, is there specific teams that work together?
Or do you guys get to kind of pick and choose these other people I want to work with on this particular project?
Usually, whenever the year starts out, we get our groups chosen for us.
But then as a year goes on, we figure out who we worked best with.
And then as we started to get choosing our partners and who we work with, we pick basically who works the best with us.
And even though like early in the year, we didn't get to choose, like some of those groups were probably the best groups that we ever had.

different feeder school yeah okay I was the same way going in a middle school
absolutely but like now I'm kind of more comfortable with my class of me and
like I mean like we're good friends now so I feel a lot more comfortable in that
class I got lucky because I came from the me feeder school so I had
facing me or you everyone but I think I got more comfortable with the people who
came from different feeder schools now do you feel like you how much you feel
you've learned in the last year I especially about film I learned a lot I
mean our curriculum is a little bit different from other film curriculum because
we focus on history as well as filmmaking so I learned some interesting facts
and it's like I like sometimes I hear it sometimes I hear the like facts in
other class it is like kind of cool also from that Mr. Shiver does more than
you just film he kind of gives us life lessons on the way nice who are your
favorite filmmakers I really don't focus on that kind of that's fair I mean
you have plenty of time okay but that's cool but you're willing to do so
because your student of film because you're in this program what was it like
being in that auditorium tonight watching all the films on that big
screen oh well when we first met our films well for me at least like we didn't
really think it was that like good but like it's kind of it's kind of satisfying
kind of here everybody laugh and stuff because like that's kind of the purpose of
our film so it's kind of rewarding and kind of like bring a sense of relief to me
I thought our movie was horrible which movie did you do oh no point the
oh that was fun yeah I was scared until I heard people laughing at the end and
I was just like that was a nice kind of a throwback thing that was a lot of fun
you remember that one yeah to me I think there was like a little subtext there
to where I was like a like a social comment on on except I stood the same way
yeah I was like I think you're gonna tell them what my actual note and that
was okay I want to tell them what their notes were like and read our

Dong I'm a sophomore at GHS all right hi I'm Jocelyn Caldron and I'm a
freshman so more underclassment I like getting these points of view because
these are the kids that are coming in you know they're not the they're not the
season veterans are actually learning a lot of stuff how are you feeling
right now with all of this going on oh okay so I went to Film Festival last year
this is really amazing they have actual decorations this year hey we're
stepping it up yeah upgrade let's go and for me it's my first year so it's really
weird because it's the first time I get to see my films up on like I'm sort of
a green one yeah and then you actually hear people laugh even if it's not supposed
to be funny they still laugh and it's great how many films did you guys work on
that in the festival technically for me too okay I would done one okay so as a
freshman what brought you to the film program well I always had trouble kind of
explaining myself and I felt like and didn't really necessarily fit in with
like theater and I liked writing and I liked storytelling so I found that
theater theater didn't really have that aspect so then I went to film and I
found that it kind of balances out everything because it has this artist like
sense of it and has all this different like all these different elements that
you can't really find anywhere else like Jocelyn I was into theater but like then
I went to film and I found out it was amazing for me because I love the
technical aspect of it and like all working with computers and cameras is this
something you really want to pursue post high school or have you not even thought
about that yet for me I feel like it's something that I really do find myself
being able to do in the future for me it's like I still don't really know my
future but it's really really fun so I feel like it'd be something that I would
rather do than work in an office better yeah better soon for you guys yeah and
actor in front of the camera or directing and producing behind the camera oh
acting is really fun because you get to see your face but directing it has this
feel to it where you're like this is coming together because you could
truly say it's your film yeah not only that but if you get to write the story
and see it come to life it's something that's so surreal and it's like you're
making magic happen here see I've I've always fascinated by actor directors
when you're doing both at the same time I don't know how how do you get your

thinking those guys were on both sides of that and they turned in a film that
was I mean it was a modern day classic I mean it's one best picture both

interviews what's the movie you're looking forward to most right now like in
real life or in real life yeah okay oh I don't know there's so many that
come out what's the first one that comes to mind everything oh that's it that's
one we haven't had yet that just came out yesterday yeah this past weekend that
looks very very interesting I'm into animation so I guess parts three
something to look forward to I'm just gonna see the second one I haven't seen the
second one yet but I like that the turn this one's taking yeah I'm very
that first try there's like oh this one's getting a little dark yeah it I
mean it's it's gonna scare kids to death all right guys thank you so much for

cinematographer for past the time past the time interesting film there what
you're are you oh I'm a third year alright yes I'm Jillian Penny I directed past
the time and I'm also a third year in film past the time was an interesting film
because it's like take the honest things that you can find to do and put them
on a list and then shoot it how did that translate from what you saw in your
head to what you saw in that huge screen just a few minutes ago well originally
we actually wanted to do something that took place in an arcade but along the
line we were developing the ideas and we were like okay well if he's passing
the time he has to have something to do right he has maybe has a list of things
to do but watching someone just do chores or on the house isn't really
interesting what if we just make things really crazy and I mean where does
we did you get together and go okay what's the weirdest possible thing
you come out or does that just one person's brainchild I came up with a lot of
them by myself but there were some that we actually got the idea from sugar and
yeah whenever we pitched the idea for the film at first we pitched the arcade
idea he was like well what if we went with more of a list type thing and he's
actually the one who gave us the milk and magic goat idea and then it just
kind of went from there so you guys actually have you you just don't really get
carte blonde you have to pitch what you're going to do and then he has to
prove it yes okay because we haven't even asked that question of how that
Pope process works how many ideas do you have to bring to the table just in
case so you can actually get started on the project right away oh I'm sorry
but that's actually a new thing that he's done recently so we would go in
with our original idea and then he decided okay you should have a backup idea
just in case but before and we didn't really do anything we were like having
another idea just in case that's kind of a new thing this year what film makers
influence you I don't think any specific filmmakers had influenced me up
until this point we're studying who is it John Joan Perry Junet don't
begin it very nice yeah his films are so like I would say aesthetically pleasing
just because he always has like some kind of certain people that he puts over it
and just I just like his cinematography and that's kind of what I want to go
into so seeing his stuff really and you guys all did I'll be especially a
cinematography aspect I was really impressed with a lot of the way things were
shot that you guys did tonight you know something we couldn't fathom when we were
we were younger that you guys actually get to do which I think is amazing how
many like at a time how many I guess for lack of a better term rigs are there
is there enough for that everybody can shoot at the same time or do you only have
two or three and you have to rotate them around when you need a camera or you
need lighting or anything of that nature it depends on the piece of equipment
that you need we have I think enough camera scrubber didn't use one in one good
but lighting is really hard for other people to have like a lighting kit whenever
they need one how many teams are filming at any one time how many teams are
there within the department a time there's at least two in the third year
class because we're a bit smaller but with like freshman there's like six
seven groups do you cross classes at all or is it are you guys all contained
within your class it's all within the same class yeah although it would be
interesting to have people from different classes work on a project together
we're giving people ideas sir oh we are a DNA can I point out something very ironic
please you said you were big of a yard studying jump here is your name yes
okay who is the producer on your film

the one question we're asking everybody because we've got to keep the thing
moving all right what's the one move you're looking forward to right now
okay well I've already seen it but I was really excited for guardians of
the galaxy too great film yeah yeah I haven't seen that yet so I'm still
looking forward to that one so I go back and forth like if they're kind of one in
one at me I really like the first one but the second one I'm good did I like it
more than I not like I keep going back and forth I need to see it again so I
couldn't really salute because we actually got we screened it in I'm X3D not
that we're bragging but no not really enjoyed it and again soundtrack knocks
out of the park just keeping us old people happy yeah go check it out baby

Don Ford he's he's he's talking he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's

time my name is so above a two day hi I'm Theresa Baker you sir we're
we're just everywhere tonight like everywhere I looked there you were what was
going on there I was a very early volunteer for the festival okay he was
right next to me and the where are you guys out in your high school careers I'm
a senior all right so you're wrapping it up are you at the point now we're just
like okay I'm good now we can kind of chill for a while or you still kind of
is the anxiousness still there I keep thinking that it's okay but it's never really
over it's film we're always anxious that's true I mean but you guys are wrapping up
your career high school careers you feel like you're finished strong yeah where
you going in the fall I'm attending Texas A University in film or not
with a minor in film with major in mechanical engineering that's the second one of
those we've had yeah I'm gonna call and study animation in film I love how a
lot of colleges are offering that now we get to spend some time with the
Dallas International Film Festival in the Dallas Video Fest every year which
are festival as you guys need to check out because they're really really
strong and they actually have animated shorts that are submitted we've talked
to a couple of the directors there and I love how universities are kind of
taking that more seriously now of you know what this is a viable art form and it
needs to be explored how many films in the festival did you guys work on I worked
on a lot of films but two were in the festival feature is my favorite was
locked out did you like it that's good for like we can't talk about what we
like though we didn't because we were judges so you'll find out what we like
here in a little while I worked on too so six total all year long that you
work on am I right on that senior year we work on two to three total if you
want to do an extra project okay so you you're a lot more focused I guess yeah
we get like a semester to do each one so what's your preferred genre to work
animation okay mine is thriller or horror because I love the cinematography and
how I can make a variety of it see Europe his alley I'm I'm not a horror kind
of guy or junkie I have a policy I live by a code and that is I refuse to pay
someone to try to make me pee on myself so being scared is not something I've
been to although we did see alien covenant and I was okay with that but I think
as I'm getting older I don't know what what that's what draws you to it is just
just being able to to get at people or it's not even the scare people I didn't
even get into horror movies to like join phone it was really because I love
but that's cool though I love the art form that you can do the so many of them
shots so you can choose for that and that's the brilliance of a program like this
as you get to be exposed to things that maybe you wouldn't have otherwise
forces you out of your comfort zone oh absolutely so how are you feeling
right now you feel good yeah I mean we're we're all tired we've been here
forever and but we're all like really excited we just want to we just want to
get with the awards and it talked to Mr. Schubert and you know this is our
final time it's a little sentimental for us all right we're getting the high
sign but we have to we were asking everybody the same question we're gonna
ask you guys what's the one movie you're looking forward to right now
Patty K definitely I've seen it I saw the Dallas International Film Festival it's
amazing I had to make a call between that and velocity of Z and I regret it
yeah velocity is the I've also saw that during the Dallas International Film
Festival too it's a toss-up between anything by Pixar and Deadpool 2
Deadpool 2's gonna be a good you just tell you heard about the anime in series
right next year Donald Glovers producing 10 episodes FXX don't tell your
parents you're watching and I'm just saying I watched it with my mother I'll

two interesting different points of view someone who's just kind of
still trying to find her way and someone who's like luck around here how are
you feeling right now the festivals over but the award shows about to begin it's
really hot right now it's a little warm gonna be honest with you this suit doesn't
normally get worn and now I know why but you know what we do it for the kids
literally literally literally literally literally literally literally literally literally
for the kids usually he argues with me on that but today we're good how many
films did you work on that are in the festival I put in two movies and I have
for look at her handers over here they're fan I know my own
you're gonna do it for that so you're wrapping it up are you going from here
where's the fault gonna lead you to and then I'm going to you to majoring in
film or are you guys are you thinking about carrying out after high school I
mean you're only halfway there but you guys are thinking about it to film
at all oh really what you did I'm gonna be a chef you even better yeah
because you know I want to you right me to do a film about cooking oh yeah
definitely there's we just saw one the Jeremiah Trotter documentary that's
CNN did it's good but it's not great but have you seen chef no I haven't
ever oh my god it is one it I guess that was 2015 now that was my favorite film
of the year oh wow it's it's a little slow going but once it picks up speed
it really really does and he makes the most beautiful grilled cheese sandwich
ever and they actually consulted on the film with local food truck
vendors that's how he actually learned from one of the top food truck vendors in
L.A. he that's how he learned and he actually sees some of that in the outtakes
at the end which is really really cool what's your favorite genre to work in I
will I'm I'll let him speak I'm I talk to him okay I like horror that's what I like
to do you're in his wheelhouse I'm a horror fanatic I really like documentaries
because I think that I know it sounds cliche and a couple are really good
what's in this festival right right and I and I think that and I think that it
really really captures because now especially today I mean kids have a voice
because of social media but whether they're listened to or not is a different
story exactly and I think that the good thing about our movie was people don't
listen with one was a plus America okay good people do not listen to the kids
when it comes to the American school system because I think we're too young and we
don't know what we're talking about you your voice doesn't matter that your
opinion doesn't count so I think that they should start listening to the kids and
that was why and the documentary is festival we talked about this earlier very
bold choices right with these documentaries I was incredibly impressed and I guess
for lack of a better term I'm going to say the word proud because you guys tackled
some stuff that I was like you know what Kudos to them for doing these subjects
I think I just remember looking at going these are some bold choices yeah
there are there are moments where he and I looked at each other and went wow okay
we're doing this let's go let's go come on I mean were these subjects that you picked
or were these especially from a documentary standpoint were they picked for you we picked
yeah we were a lot of people wanted to do I just I just found out a lot of the
you guys actually had to pick pitch this stuff yeah we were doing a teacher what's that
process I'm not sure was very iffy and I think that look a couple of the people who are
in the documentary I I I chose some of them he chose some of them but
what how did you feel about mr. Schubert pitching and the pitching process for
the movie are we getting kicked out he we're about to
I mean at first he was he didn't really know if we were going to be able to pull it off
but he let us do it regardless and we could go for him if we need to help so I'm glad that he was
that he let us do it because they gave off a good message all right we're getting kicked out
here for much right we're asking everybody the same question we asked you two

this is our legacy I believe was the name of that yes the very last one if I'm not mistaken all right
and my older son Peter is actually in town today he's making his own little short film
he's trying to get into directing but he's very nice he works on NCIS no no no with that
