I am a tour manager for Stella R2A.
I run the Airstream program.
And we travel all around the country making sure people are well on their way to a fun time.
And you know, we have a picture.

We've been doing this festival now four years.

How long have you guys been doing this particular project?
So we actually just got a lot more aggressive with our platform this past quarter.
So quarter being, you know, starting January.
We really started getting a big push.
It's called the Ballad program or the initiative.
And that acronym stands for by a lady of drink.
What a thanks man.
Appreciate it.
I just had a beer delivery.
Got to have it in you if you're going to talk about it.
He's just going to live in the dream.

He's on the clock.
He's got Stella in front of him.
I try to live the brand.
Hey.
You got to represent brother.

What's going back to that.
So we've been with water.org for a few years now.
Every every year we try to get as much sales out there.
So what it is is our chalice is a for sale.
They're all based on a region that can be supported by the water.org program.
Why we say one year one one chalice is equal to five years clean drinking water is is just that.
So what it is is that each time someone purchased one of these it's going to give somebody water in that.
Water in that country for at least five years.
They're building infrastructure to get water from wherever their local their closest water source is to their to their local villages if that is what it is.
So one cool thing is we we partnered with with also Samsung.
They developed this this virtual reality program where we interact with people and show them what one woman has done before.
She got access to clean drinking water and what her life is like after it which where she's able to you know spend time with her family sell products in local markets.
And just it's almost thirteen trips a day four or five miles to their local water source by themselves.
And it's always the women in these areas that have to kind of bear that burden.
So cellar 12 has found that water.org has been the best source to be able to get as much you know funds that area is possible.
And obviously you've seen Matt Damon they put him out recently into the into the the world and you know that's now we get more recognition as that.
And you'll see the trailer itself is actually designed off the Brazil child.
So we have three right now Brazil Cambodia and Uganda and each each child sold the money goes to those respective regions.
And that's okay. That was going to be my next question is how do they determine well you buy the chalice that goes to that region.
No.
This is a really really cool thing and the chalices are they're thirteen.
I thought so. I didn't want to say an undersell it.
Thirteen bucks it's a gorgeous job. I mean you've seen them everywhere on TV.
They're absolutely gorgeous chalices.
A friend of the show doc John Doc Houser. I sent him the picture of your air stream and he was like I'm not in town.
Well in your losing out brother you're losing out.
You know we have five of these actually. We have five of them scattered across the country right now.
Oh really? Yeah.
And these are what's probably 25 foot.
They are exactly 25 foot.
Two look at me doing stuff.
Matt the math is strong with this one.
It's spatial reasoning is on is on right now.
And I see when we first got here we were probably pulled into loading because we're outdoors on the patio on a gorgeous night.
I thought maybe you guys had just brought this out here that you restored your stuff in it.
And then all of a sudden things are opening and coolers are being filled.
And I was like this this is a thing like this you could really.
I mean talk about all the places that you've been able to take with the air stream.
Oh man. I've been I've been all over the country.
Probably some of our bigger events and everybody would recognize is the Kentucky Derby.
We're doing our second annual major sponsorship there.
Oh wow.
That's here what about a month?
That's coming up May 5th and 6th are going to be the two days of the big races that are at Churchill Downs.
We go to races. We go to film festivals.
We do food and wine festivals all across the country.
Every city has one and some are better than others.
But honestly we love to get our sponsorship out there and make sure people are having a good time.
We've changed our hashtags from here in there.
We go from live host beautifully to live with the brand.
It's always just kind of a hosting event.
So we have chairs that come out.
We set up a big party.
Sometimes we're taking pictures inside.
Like you'll see we have our chalice shop where we sell in chalices.
And then we'll do virtual reality later.
It's always another way to just kind of enhance an environment and just kind of create a party.
How long do you with the company?
With with with seller to us going on my second year kind of working specifically with seller to waffle time.
Now we'll take we'll take the dip out of the equation because you know we're biased.
But outside of this particular festival like what's the one thing that you really really look forward to doing?
Like like festivals in general?
Just it just any event in general.
Give me a top three.
Top three Kentucky Derby was awesome man.
I got to tell you like it's it's going to be a sea of people.
It's getting from one place to another between you know main hours is impossible.
Gladly I was stationed right in front of Betline so I can get my money in early.
Oh yeah everybody in Louisville knows about horse racing one way or another.
So I had probably 20 staff members that were just giving me tidbits here and there.
I ended up picking the horse that came in second once I'm cash.
Nice.
And we know that what's the biggest role break evens a win.
Dude big time.
And I'm not even a big better but I've learned a lot about horse racing now.
We go to him a lot.
We're going to be a precness this year.
And also what's the other big one?
What's that one?
The Belmont.
The Belmont of the third of the Triple Crown.
We'll be at all three Triple Crown races this year in some capacity.
What else are you looking forward to besides those?
You know what?
Good question.
After this we've got a couple of events in Arkansas.
I actually just left the Miami open.
So I'm from Fort Lauderdale.
It's my section of the country.
Dude I got to see Nadal play a Federer.
Oh nice.
Just the two beasts of tennis and they were there exactly that.
They're just ones and artists in Federer and one's just like a machine in Nadal.
They're insane to watch.
They're so different in the way in their style but incredible.
Incredible tennis.
And you probably got to watch one of the last head to head they're going to have.
Because I know that as they say father time is undefeated.
It's weird to think about how long those two have played each other.
Yeah.
And you know then joke of it got into the mix and.
I don't know.
Tennis just hasn't gotten the love it's gotten in recent years in my opinion.
Yeah.
That's Sangha kid is killing it.
That really tall guy.
Yeah.
He's probably the biggest tennis player I've seen.
Today.
And it's such a different way to watch an event too.
Yeah.
When you're at a tennis match.
Oh my god.
The stadium in Miami is beautiful.
It's so intimate.
Like wherever you're sitting you can feel like you can taste the sweat.
Which is weird to say sadly.
Now I realize that.
Well it's water.
Water works into water.
We can make a connection.
Cool.
That's not a problem.
Yeah.
So what about people that maybe can't get to an event?

So honestly there's so many ways to get to these challenges.
It's almost if you if you can't figure it out.

And you could pick we changed the regions with the years.
So depending on depending on when you're looking there might be a different region.
But like I said now it's supporting Cambodia.

And it's exciting.
So really the regions that you're dealing with right now are the regions everybody's dealing with?
Or is there a different selection depending on where you go?
Well right now like throughout the stellarartwa platform is going to be those three regions.
Last year was Honduras and my mind's failing me on where the other ones were.
So it changes yearly?
It has as so far.
This is the second year that I've been involved in it.
And the initiative has kind of worked directly with them.
The artists that design these chalices are actually from the regions.

and kind of why they went along.
As you can see the Brazil chalice has a lot of women on it.
And nothing wrong with that.

Let's talk a little bit about the citer.

I've seen the citer advertised a few times and it's never been at a party that I'd go to.
And generally there's one or two people.

This might be the tastiest citer I've ever had.
And let me tell you something.
And I am a booze hound.

You are not the first person.
If you've been watching social media from diff this year for the last week.
A lot of people that I know that have come to the festival are also talking about the citer.
So this isn't just a Devon Pike thing.
What are the talking points on the citer other than the fact that Stella is actually throwing their brand behind something that is not their signature distilled product for the last so many centuries.
Well you know I'll start with the Stella stuff.
So Stella itself as a beer the beer that we drink today.
First was first brewed in 1926.
It's brewed in Belgium and it was first as a gift.
It was made as a gift to the city of Belgium in 1926.
So that's not just a commercial.
No it was a Christmas beer.
Okay.
That's why you see the star in the glass.
It's actually the word Stella means star in Latin.
And our toa is the last name of the original brew master one of the owners of the company.
His name is Sebastian our toa.
So speaking to Cedra which is our citer it hasn't eaten the end but we put away.
Oh wait whoa whoa stop.

I know he's allowed.
It's his job.
I get that part but okay Cedra.
So if you don't order it as Cedra do they look at you funny?
No.
Not unless you're talking to anybody that if they do then they should probably shouldn't be working with us.
We politely correct and we try to help you and buy some more.
But talking points on Cedra are so it's naturally gluten free which most ciders are.
It's all the apples that are used.
They're sourced in North America between like the areas of Washington and Canada.
When it's brewed you'll find that it's actually got a lighter quality to it.
It's a little drier and it's actually brewed with a yeast that activates champagne typically.
That's what we put in a white wine glass.
So it's a drinker over there.
Yep.
Don't you drink it or not?
Yes.
Get a hold of that.
I'm on my second glass already.
It is what I've found to be what most non-cider drinkers consider a drinkable cider.
And for me.
This is fantastic.
I put it actually.
I usually make a little bit of it.
Do you or sweet baby Jesus that's clean.
I do.
I'll do like 75% Stella and about 25% Cedra and it's just one of the most refreshing drinks you can have.
There is a smoothness to that and I'm not a drinker.
But you know what?
We'll fix that.

How did you DJ in karaoke for so long?
That was before I had the whole blood sugar problem.
That happened after I retired.
Okay.
I just tried that.
I'm not much of a drinker.
That is incredibly smooth.
Yes.
That is like glass smooth.
There's no bitter, there's no bitter kick to it.
There's an alkaline kick that most ciders that are done domestically.
And not necessarily Canadians but most American ciders.
There's an alkaline kick and it must be the distilling process that hits.

So in honor of our good friend, Gary Murray,
who he and I have been DJs for a very, very, very long time.
And we were talking about this last year
on Tuesday night, one of the three nights that I worked with the lounge last year.
And Gary and I were hatching a plan to do an 80s prom at the lounge.
And that was supposed to have been Wednesday and that kind of got scuttled.
So tonight, no one else outside of the festival organization knows this.
But it is all 80s of the lounge tonight.
And by that, I mean, if someone requests a song that was released
after December 31st, 1989, I refused to play it.
All right.
They cannot sign up for it as a karaoke song.
They cannot hear it.
And that's just going to be the way it's going to be.
You are one of my favorite people.
It is an 80s prom.
And on us to God, I miss Gary.
This festival is not the same without him.
The film scene around Dallas is not the same without him.
And let me tell you something, speaking to Gary,
I was talking to Leap Abert the other night.
And he actually took a picture on the red carpet of the space they reserved for him.
Yes.
And he said that on social media.
And again, what I love about the diff, there's nothing you can say that's not followed by the words class act.
And Dawn getting the tattoo that was done live on Channel 8 the other night.
Nortex's film critics is doing some stuff for him as well.
It's the tributes to this man just never end and they never shit.
Well, there was a reason for that.
Gary was an incredibly kind and giving human being.
When I got back into the critics circle after being out of it for about,
I probably 12, 15 years, whatever.
Gary was the first person to reach out to me and say,
okay, here's somebody you need to talk to.
Here's an introduction you need to make.
This is some, this is a contact you need to have.
And Gary was always that giving with every single person that he met.
He did that for us.
It's not for him.
We don't have anything.
Yeah, we're not here.
Completely.
And I mean, it's just one of those things where this Dallas has a very robust film criticism sing.
There are a lot of great critics or a lot of great writers.
But Gary was one of those people who you wanted to hang out with after the screening
and just yammer about what other whether it was whether it was Buffett, whether it was Floyd,
whether it was just music in general.
The man had an encyclopedic knowledge of all of these things.
And it was one of those amazing, amazing human beings.
And there really isn't, I can't go to an event like this and not miss him.
You are definitely not in the minority there, sir.
And we miss him very much.
And I mean, that's the man said it.
The man said it.
We also have somebody else joining us right now.
It's another guy that has been with us since our first show at the film festival.
A guy that's a lot nicer to us than he ever has to be.

Alex, I'm part of the programming team of the festival, specifically in charge of international cinema and Latino cinema.
So if it's not in English, it has to go through me.
That's the hardest working man in show business right now, especially this week.
You are a lot more surprised than I thought you would be at this point.
Because usually by this point, the festival, everybody's just like, I just need to get the Sunday.
Alex is skipping down the sidewalk.
He is like, I don't know that I haven't not seen him since I've been wandering around the festival.
I mean, you have been everywhere.
Are you about ready to exhale?
No.
So number one, it's after sundown.
And we're vampires in my family.
So I'm even more awake than right now that you've seen me at noon.
That's fair.
Okay.
He was hanging upside down at sunrise.
That's what they have those high ceilings for again.
Yeah, okay.
Exactly.
So, I mean, I know we still got two days to go.
What's been the highlight for you so far?
The highlight has been the audience reception of a lot of the films that we were kind of,
okay, we would probably have a very receptive audience.
But then we had like, oh, we went to a rush line.
Oh, this one is full house.
Oh, we better bring in chairs.
And for those of you that don't understand when they say rush line,
this is once they get all the past people in, all the ticketed people in,
this is kind of an overflow line that they go to.
And the fact that when you have to go to that, that's an awesome, awesome thing.
And there's no guarantee that you're going to get in because you're going to hang out
because the allure of that film is so strong.
So, all right.
So, as part of the programming team,
I know the workload that James Faust and Sarah Harris have to,
I refuse to use her wedding name because Sarah's amazing.
So, I know the amount of films they have to watch to figure out parts of programming.
As the non-English track goes, which is one of the most out,
non-English tracks of any festival I've ever covered.
Especially this year.
How many films have you had to watch and when did you have to start watching them?
Between August and that first week of February,
I watched about 700 films.
Oh, between shorts and features and...
I haven't seen any 700 films in the last quarter century.
I don't know about it.
When you work programming for a film festival of this magnitude
with a 10-day slate and two full theater slates,
that's what you've got to do.
150, it's a lot to fail.
Oh, God almighty.
And some of them are still kind of TBA,
so there's still some prizes around the corner.
Yes, so, you know, I said it before they released the schedule.
I said it on social media and I am standing by it.
This festival lineup this year was stout.
That's the only word I can use.
There's a list of films as long as my arm
that I didn't get to watch because I had a day job
that I'm just like, I still need to see these films.
And I've seen six films in the festival.
I've got at least three more scheduled between now and Sunday.
And you're going to be on a rush line for two of my already known.
Oh, there's no doubt in my mind.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
One of them especially tomorrow night if I can get in.
Uh-huh.
This, I mean, you guys have to be just like,
I mean, were you just wowed once you finally got it down to just building everything out?
Did you just floor you?
Like it floored me?
For us, it was more of a sigh of relief in a way or more of like a jab.
Because every year we try to have like,
oh, this is our ideal lineup.
And then you have some bench warmers.
And eventually you start getting nose
and then you have to go to the bench warmers

And just that look in their eyes of like, this is really happening.
Which is what I love about this festival is you get those people.
You don't get the people that just kind of saunter by you.
And yes, you will see my film.
And then you will be.

It's just it's because it is and I say this every year.
It is a film festival run by filmmakers.
There are so many festivals that don't have that connection at a DNA level.
And whether whether you're talking about Michael Cain.
Whether you're talking about James Faust.
Whether you're talking about Sarah Harris.
Whether you're talking about Alex.
You're talking about any of these people.
They all know what it is to get a film out into the wild.
And films aren't released.
They escape.
And no one treats filmmakers better than Diff.
I will say it over and over again.
And let me you're talking about the films.
What we talked about this last week.
One of the great things about this festival is the number of films that show here that wind up.
I don't know.
Maybe getting nominated for an Oscar the next year.
Life animated.
Maybe winning the Oscar like the heart locker.
I just.
Getting to see the films and then getting you know what?
We got to see that win or we got to talk to the people that made that film.
And now that film is getting a wide release.
And honestly part of that magic if you may.
Is that.
Part of our thinking as programmers is okay.
We want these movies.
They're great.
These filmmakers are awesome.
But also do we have an audience for this film.
We don't want to bring them into the wild and be like well no one showed up to the film.
Because no one in Dallas would be interested in this thing.

We have these great films but now which ones can actually make a splash here with our audiences.

It is one of those films that when it ended, I said to myself, this is how I should have felt at the end of Boyhood and didn't.

But that movie absolutely destroyed me.

We had a chance to interview Christine Clargeau who did trophy.

And she asked me point blank in the interviewer, are you going to go see the movie in the theater?
And this is my reaction is the same that Rob had been seeing Lion.
No, I can't watch this in the theater in public.
I have to see this in private because I know I'm going to cry like a little girl.

I need to be in the privacy of my own home.
And it is absolutely amazing.
I mean, out of all the documentaries at the festival, the two that I am like plugging and talking about is trophy and what lies upstream.
Which if you hated the government before in the bureaucracy, this will just piss you off even more.

But yeah, I mean, there's been a lot of great stuff.
But I think there are some that it's hard to see in the theater in public.

If I'm being perfectly honest in the interest of full disclosure, I'm excited because it has the word Star Wars.

And how dark the tone of the second chapter always tends to be awesome.

Well, as much as I enjoyed the Force Awakens, this is the one that I've been looking forward to mostly because it is Luke being the Jedi Master.

It's supposed to be darker.
And the only thing that I swear to God, I'm going to be pissed off if he doesn't make it out of this trilogy.
And it needs to be Luke.
I don't need this.
So it was like something that happens to him at the end of this movie.
I'm like, I'm not saying I won't see episode nine, but I'm going to be very mad and there will be some protest.
Wouldn't it kind of be ironic if Chewbacca is the only one that survives once considering that he was the one that got buffed off?

Because he's the ultimate go pound sand to the people that keep ragging on the EU.

Because it leads you clearly up to what sets off
You know what is going to be treasure island, but if you love Spartacus if you love the

Black sales is basically it's replacement, but you're dealing with the legends of pirates and

And Toby Stevens I haven't really seen anything great that Toby Stevens has been in since he kind of played the villain of

Yeah, but he was so amazing playing Captain Flint
That we spoke earlier on the show about our love for James Bond

No, no outside of it being the only bond film in history where the person who sang the theme song was actually in the film itself right

I didn't know I mean I love Nick frost anyway because he's Nick frost
But I didn't know how well he was gonna like
He's growing on me in this show right that that's where I was going. I'm glad you're with me on that
Yeah, I like him too. I'm a huge fan. Yeah wife outdoors that him in this show that first episode was really wonky for me
But now that they you know, I thought they were gonna be doing this whole season like yeah
But you but you know what they're different from each other
But now that they're they've broken the chains and they're they've gotten to where they've gotten
And I was like right one good. Well, and that's the scene that endeared me to him is when

That's all that pretty brilliant. Okay, we're I did see that that was we're good
That was genius and I like how they're they're not sacrificing anything with this full season order too
Because that was my worry is well now they've got a 12-to-old episode season. Are we gonna be watering down the story?
Are we you know is is the storytelling gonna slow down? It really has it. It's really held up well
And it's kind of like AMC has really they're they they cracked a coat
Of let the people that run these shows run these shows right now some would argue that's that's worked against itself
I've heard a lot of people that have bailed on the walking dead this season
Well, you know what you know what really did it
It was that first episode. I think they kind of went over the line with how gruesome it was
I think there's there's another of a shock value with
We were okay to a certain point and we knew Negan was gonna be bad
But it's you went so far
We can't watch every moment with him and
I'm kind of the same way. It's like I'm at the point now. I read the spoilers. I know what's going on. I watch the last episode

I I'm waiting for them to finally kill him. I'm like I'm done tell me about the point where they kill him
And you know what and the longer this show goes the less I'm concerned that I've never watched the episode
It just it didn't appeal to me in the beginning and it doesn't appeal to me now
Um the walking dead is one of those that it it's hit its peak now you've hit this master villain
People are warring with each other people are
Coming together to fight the evil villain of like I feel like you you've done everything
It's not so much the zombies anymore because
Everybody's learned how to deal with them. They're not the main and you know antagonist. It's
other warring clients
And I'm at the point now with the walking dead that I did when you remember the show revolution and everybody fighting against each other
It's like that show got old. I know it lasted two seasons and it was with NBC and we're like three seasons or something

After 22 episodes and this has always been our biggest argument on that nerd show
Quit making 22 episodes seasons brother. You're not gonna hear debate out of me. You're not gonna hear a debate out of me take this anymore

Because why is it that all of your DC shows are taking four weeks off
It's just so that they can finish in May sweeps. Why are we not starting later for the second half of the year right so that we can go power through
Well, we when we did our panel at all con uh a month ago and in our panel this year was how to fix DC comics
mostly the cinematic universe
But we had a lot of complaints about the CW and in terms of how to do everything
If you're truly going to be the DC TV channel and you want to develop everything
I don't have a problem with doing 13 episodes of arrow all in a row and then going to flash the second half of the season
And splitting up the more characters that you can bring in like bring it back constantly for god's sake. Yes

uh in series called 10 by 10 which is like 10 episodes and 10 minutes and episode. Oh, okay, um and it explores like a sort of like
I mean like from a filmmaker point of view you can be like very stylistic with each episode you can you can try to explore different sort of like um tones and movements
I think uh, this is all very general but um
I'm writing a treatment in that format
So maybe explore it in that direction. I feel like um
Interestingly enough. I think I think moonlight sort of hits the similar themes um in some ways and visually it looks similar to my film
But we filmed it totally separate
As far as I've ever seen I just want to say on the record we did it before me. We've been lighted before moonlight. Yeah
We haven't gotten the same amount of praise, but we're waiting. Yeah, well, we're waiting
But but I like this in this 10 by 10 format because with the technology moving as fast as it does
It gives filmmakers a better opportunity to get their art out there
Without having to break the bank and you guys can do this in these smaller chunks
So maybe it doesn't impact you as much financially so you can get that ROI
Right. Yeah
Yeah, so I mean there are there are sort of like
OTT platforms that are embracing that more
It's hard. It's hard because you still have to be with like a distributor that
wants to promote you
You can always release it on youtube
But to get the eyes on it to make the next thing
Uh, you got to love it with sweet Caroline leaves out for the inside
Yeah, that's what filmmakers sound like
But that's this night every year at the festival. Yeah, you know, it's great right after dfs honors
Everybody comes back here and we all do drunken karaoke and it's a look how many years have you been doing this podcast?
This is our fourth year at the festival. We've actually been a podcast for almost seven
Congratulations. Oh, thank you. We love this step festival every year
And it's it's really cool to watch how this festival's grown
You know, it's this is the 11th year of this festival. Yeah, and every year it just keeps getting better
And they keep raising the bar which I'm just in the fact that they let these two shrubs come up here and do a podcast on a patio on a Friday night
Are you kidding? Yeah, I'm all about this kind of cold over here. It's a beautiful night
We're just very unusual for this time of year in Dallas
So you I've resigned myself of the fact that I'm a schlub because he refers to us that all we are schlubs
I mean, you know nobody knows us
We live in relative experience we're getting there and I'm okay with the relative experience we've done this for four years
Obviously, we're getting no so yeah, it's loves a microphone putting putting this back on the rails. How long did it take you to film it?
Um, I think it's like six days
Six days on set for how long is the weather short?
What was that how long was the short was it? It's it's about 12 to 13 minutes long
um
Yeah, I mean production was about six days
writing took about like a month a couple months um and
What else so casting took took a little while I mean yeah production itself was about six days. It was these this film for
Him graduating out of UT, so I kind of have the year to develop it
Congratulate it to do all the pre-production and basically make it so yeah
Was it I mean did you feel rush or was six days about as long as it needed to be? No, I think I think it was a good amount of time. I mean
No, I think I think yeah, we actually probably get done shorter if we have as many locations of film in yeah
So the principal photography in the inside locations of film in Austin, which is where we went to school
We're we're both from actually and then all the experience are in Dallas
So we had to drive up to Dallas the small skeleton crew and basically shoot kind of on the run through different parts of Dallas
Chasing kind of the morning light in the sunset to keep continuity for the film. So
It was uh
Was a tight shooting schedule. It was great tight. We um yeah, we filmed it like
At like sunset
Let me want to sleep and then we woke up with like the break of dawn
So like cuz we were trying to emulate the same light right on both days
Yeah, and I do want to say there's a very convincing passion cotton somewhere in Dallas
And if there could be like a prize for a listener that finds it. I'm just throwing this out here
But it is there. It's there
I'm telling you should go out there and see what's out there because you know get it for posterity if nothing
How often is Google Maps updated, you know, that's fair. That's fair for rich
Because that way when you blow up here in a few years you can look back and go you know what that was where it started hot
That's where this is career started
I'm on that patch of God. Yeah, that'll be nice to look back
So how did you feel it? I mean you said that you had a really good turnout for it
How did you feel there was a goodness? I'm sure there was a Q&A afterwards right for both nights or just one
Both nice and there were how many shorts in your block. I can't remember offhand. There's seven. Okay
There's a handful. How did how did the Q&A go? I thought it was really good
I mean the shorts that we like
Like played with were also really great and I don't know. It's hard because
um
There's a lot of like symbols. I feel like in in this film that I made um that are our maybe unexplained
Completely
But it's up to the audience to sort of fill their own blanks and and and build an narrative in their own heads a little bit
um
And I feel like I feel like the audience spoke up and asked the right questions
And they've worked curious about what things meant um and they ask questions which is more than some audiences for short programs do
Yeah, they do. I mean a lot of people just are sort of disengaged. I mean it's it's hard
It's hard to watch a short program because it's like an emotional trip man like it's like most these films are dramatic
They're all about 10 to 12 minutes long
And you're just seeing them back to back and they just wash over you
It's like hard to remember. It's hard to like
Because you've like sort of resetting your body to like take the next one. It's I mean, oh, yeah, it's kind of great
Where'd you sit within the block?
It was like dead center
But that's not a bad place to be. Yeah, you know, I mean were there any questions that just completely blew your wheels off?
No, they were all pretty good. Actually, so you reported for any questions
As we like to say you've slept since then so you had to think about it a little bit
Yeah, I mean, so everything kind of stayed within the rails nothing just made you kind of like okay now
How do I approach this? So all the questions you got were
I don't want to say questions you were expecting but more questions you were prepared for right
I mean the one question I was definitely expecting. I mean, I've gotten it every time is like
What does the burning of the cotton mean? I mean it's nothing unless you see the film but um
I mean, that's like that's like a
Question that I get every time and if you want to watch the film it's online perfect

I'm still wanting to see score, but I don't know if I'm going to have a chance to
Well, that's the main thing I was like because they're not shown it again
But I see a bit of just screaming for that. It's it's pretty good
Uh, that's right in my wheel. I was a little disappointed that all of the John William stuff was archival footage
There was nothing new interview with him. Oh, that's but they did a really good section in that film about
the emergence of people doing scores like um
Trent Rezner at his partner. Yes. Yes
Interesting stuff from them. Atticus Ross. I believe it's an Atticus Ross. You are correct
Of course anything that Zimmer's involved in. I mean there's a and there's a really good section during the credits of
They got they did interview camera
Of course right and he talks about the scoring of Titanic a little bit
specifically in this in the sketchy scene
Which was really really I mean it's a really nice story that he tells. I'm sure he has some heartfelt
Sentiments to share about Horner, too. Well, but he said Horner like
Send him the piano track that they play in that scene right and
He called he said he goes I called him and I said I love it. He goes well. That's the demo. He's like no
Just use that. This is what I want to use he goes well. I know he's this is what you want
I mean, and I said yes, and he said all right. I can get this guy. He's a he's the top three piano, but he's like no
We're using what you sent me in that scene nothing else. Don't do anything else. Just go with the word
It's a great story. Did they address? I don't want to go into spoiler territory here, but did they address
The Indiana Jones score about how it was two separate themes and then they found okay
But because they're like I said all of the of the stuff for Williams was all archival
Well, this is all things. I mean, you know, it's it's been out there for a while
They they they didn't really spend a lot of time on
On Indie though while something did a lot quite a bit on Star Wars quite a bit on ET quite a bit on jobs
Yeah, remember you're saying you were mentioning jaws earlier and I was
I was always intrigued by the story that the whole
Was one theme in it
Was another theme and they said now screw it. We're just going to make that one theme and I one thing
I found really interesting about that film is how there's a preference
Depending on the composer
sub composers
Don't conduct in the studio. They just compose
They compose and let somebody else they have somebody else conduct because they're in the control room with the director
Getting feedback as they're reporting and that how Elfman does it and that and that how surely Walker kind of came to be in the position that she came
Probably in and they do it. Elfman isn't it
Yeah, no surprise there
Also another thing I found really really fascinating and that is most of these musicians are slight readers
They haven't seen the score before they walk into the studio
So it's surprised to them as much as it is to anybody. They do a little bit on dual the fates
Because they they talk they do talk about Abbey Road
Quite a bit because how the the different venues within Abbey Road
Uh, it's it's really good. I enjoyed it. I don't know
I can't tell you that there were and there was anything that melted my brain because you and I are people that are fairly ingrained
Yeah in film score and and and it's what we're well versed in pretty much
So I don't know that it and that I walked out like oh that moment was amazing
But it was it's a really good documentary for people that want to know more about film score
It's a necessarily shanany new light on it for guys like us, but it was enjoyable nonetheless
And there's it's just it's really interesting because it really goes through the different eras
Oh, but we've got a lot more people starting to come in now from dfs honors as we are now into our three of our show

My name is Sarah Harris and I am the senior programmer for the Dallas Film Society
We talked earlier about Alex being one of the busiest men in show business
Sarah's almost busier than him
When do you find downtime? That's the first thing I want to ask you know what starting in like a week
Because it's like every time I see a film that you intro. It's like I saw this at this festival
I saw that I'm like what like do you just have your stuff in storage?
Because like how do you even get to go home? I will that's the thing. I just watching movies all year round
So I will probably start watching movies again in May for another festival
That is in the fall. How many festivals do you actually get to run? Um, I program right now for four different festivals
I work with Dallas is my main one and then I'm also a short curator for the Denver Film Festival
A programming associate for Sundance and then I also just uh, I came a programmer with Seattle International Film Festival this year
You are living a dream
Well, if the dream is watching a lot of bad movies with 10% good movies then yes
But we talked earlier about it if you don't have them out the valley you can't appreciate them out there
I mean, there's something about getting like you see that one good movie and then it's an adrenaline rush
Oh, keep watching I can do it with the bad ones. I'm totally totally so let's talk about this. I'll let number 11

What is the one thing that the one film in the festival because there's still two days left
But the one film that you've seen in the festival so far that you were just like
This is the one that really broke through and I wasn't quite sure it would
You know
Okay, so there's a film playing on Sunday that I actually watched as a submission for Sundance
It's called Dina
Okay, and
That was one of like a 200 movies I watched that I recommended it got into the festival
And then it went on to win the jury prize at Sundance and
um, and it's one of those stories. It's a beautiful film. It's a really interesting story
And you know, I didn't know if anybody else would appreciate it as much as I did
I just loved it and um, I'm really glad that I was able to bring it here to Dallas too because we get one screening of it
And it's Sunday night. It's a lot of stuff going on Sunday nights. Yeah, like I'm kind of real in this I was
I was a lot more optimistic that I was going to get into this until like two days ago
Because I'm really interested in seeing patty cakes, but then the announcement went up that it's getting wide release in July
And I'm like it is I may have to get there early for this one
But yeah, and it's a thing. It's it's the last film in the festival
It's gonna be a great way to go out and I'm taking Monday off so I could go to the late show
I mean, I was as
Again, we talked about this ad nauseam this weekend last week
When I saw the schedule and I always make my own schedule from this schedule
Because I have a day job so I have to balance things
Totally, but I just kept going. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. Like this this lineup
It's like the bar you guys just keep raising the bar
We like we work really hard to try to find the best of the best and you know
It's an eclectic mix and
It's a lot of fun to like kind of mix it up and see how things piece together and
You know, we're really proud of our program. We're really really proud of our filmmakers
You know, it's it's easier when we can find great filmmakers making great work
Well, let's talk about DFS honors. You just you finally got done. Yes
How did it go? What happened because we haven't heard anything. Oh, it went really well
We have a couple full makers in the house. Well, well is here. She won for
Mr. Roosevelt so she I heard very very good things about that
Yeah, yeah, so that's going to get an extra screening as well this weekend
Delt won the audience award for documentary loved that yeah, I know me too. I was saying earlier. I was I was writing my review for it
and
the
I don't know what to call it the twist but the the difference to that film but because of his condition
Yeah, I almost was hesitant to talk about it because
He doesn't want to talk about it for both of the film and it's like infected me as a bunch
I mean, that's the thing about that film right it's there's the turning point where he's like this is you know
And what what's at the core of the film is that your greatest weakness is actually your greatest strength
I didn't make you kind of realize that like you can do anything you can as long as you're passionate about and care about it
You can put your mind forward and do it so tell us some of the other winners. Oh, let's see
It's a blur city of ghost was the silver heart winner tonight
Which is really great especially considering what's happening right now in Syria
Quest is the documentary
Jury winner quest destroyed me. Yeah, absolutely. I was I was telling Chad earlier about like
There's a huge turn about midway through that I don't want to ruin for anybody because I know what you're talking about that moment
I was sitting in the theater and I just it's been a long time since I physically had to catch my breath
Yeah, but I was like holy crap that just happened. Yeah
And like I said my my main and I haven't written my review yet
But my review is going to say when the credits rolled on quest
This is how I should have felt at the end of boyhood
This is exactly how I should have been making and it is real and it's heart-wrenching and this family is beautiful
The way that they come together and the way that they're you know trying to support each other in their community through every
Anyway, when you say what they go through everything like you can't over sell that yeah literally through
Everything yeah, but I mean what he's up there fixing his own roof with plywood and he's just standing up there like it
I'm so on the way. Yeah, yeah, it's just I mean it's an everyday kind of family
But they are compelling and they're dynamic and there's love there and it's just it's
I really I really hope that film gets the attention that life anime
Yeah, yeah, we'll see what happens like hopefully my favorite films the last year. Yeah, that's great one too. So what else what else happened? Oh gosh

David Gordon Green told some great stories about his kind of upbringing here in Richardson and Dallas and how you know
He used to work at movie theaters and be a ticket taker and that was kind of his week
That was yeah, that was like an education for him was to see all those movies and it was really funny
Because he's just like mentioning all these places and the first way to our movie
He saw and like the for you know where he convinced his parents to take him to this movie and all that and his parents were there
And it was really it was really nice tribute and for those you in the area is tomorrow sold out
There is a conversation with David Gordon Green at the SMU SMU Museum, which is still open public
And then there's pineapple express of the Texas theater, which is still tickets are still on sale for that good

Yeah, I mean things have I mean you guys have really been getting stuff done here recently
Even really been almost working overtime, but it's all paying off
Tell us about your experiences at the festival so far this year because this has been crazy this year
We know
It's like every festival
I have a happy moment
And my happy moment actually was opening night
Because we had fade done away. Yes, we did who I got fade done away to come to the festival and
She she does her she has her talk with Joe laden the wonderful Joe laden and the film starts the screen
And she goes I'd like to watch a few scenes before I go and so we sneaker into the house
And I sit in front of a she's sitting behind me. We ended up watching the entire film of Bonnie and Clyde
And every once in a while
Faye would lean over and tap me on the shoulder and go that was a great scene wasn't it?
And like like the gene wilder part comes on and she tells me shows you as he was so funny
And so I'm watching Bonnie and Clyde with fade done. You're getting live comments. Yeah, but it's like a commentary
Yeah, exactly. It was the coolest damn thing ever did you wake up the next morning go that really happened?
Did I dream? Well, you know, listen again every festival has those moments and you know
Um
I just I was reminded of one of those moments because as we all know the
great legendary Don Rickles. Oh, that's the way
Well, we talked about that earlier in the show and at AFI Fest
While I was a publicist there we had the film Mr. Warmth and so we talked about earlier as well
I love that documentary. It's a fantastic documentary and and I had so I had Don Rickles on my red carpet
And and so you know, so I'm with him and he was great. He was amazing and at one point
I'm like writing an elevator with he and his wife and and he's talking about the kids that had been
Interviewing him because they were all the kids and and he was making fun of them
But in a loving way going they had no idea that kid had no idea right?
So that was great
But here the other amazing thing is that his publicist
Was actually the son of his original publicist
So his publicist
Paul Souther chef friend had taken over from his dad
and his manager
Was Frank Sinatra's manager who then took over and became Don's manager
And and and who I became friend his manager was Tony. Oh
I'm saying that for a reason it's Tony. Oh Tony. Oh was his manager
Not in Tony. Oh Tony. Tony. Oh, right
So and those guys they were
50s
50s icons those guys so so as I was dealing with them as the publicists
They were talking to me and you know as as they would have if if they were talking to some publicists from a studio
From MGM or Warner Brothers back in the day because that's how they did it
And so that memory it just came flooding back to me on the news of Don's death
Of that moment and again that was a happy moment every festival. There's a happy moment and I'm thinking maybe tomorrow
I'm gonna have another couple of them because I'm moderating the Q&A

After we screen the free screen you ever film before I fall just came out last month
I think yeah
So so I'll be with both Zoe and the director Rai Russo young talking with them about everything about her career and about that movie
And then afterwards I'm having a conversation with Judge Reinhold after daddy's dying who got the will
So I'm gonna have two awesome conversations where I'm gonna talk about their entire careers and everything that goes into them
So the very first day of the festival the very end of the festival. I'm book ending amazing moments
And we like to call that finishing straw. Yes. Yes indeed. Has there been anything this year that has surprised you
Um, you know what what surprises me and what surprised me me this year is
The strength of films that we were able to get
In spite of a lot of odds against us. You know, I you know, I'd praise
James Faust
Up and down the street all the time. I'm always like
Toot is a four shout shout out whatever and I've been I'm at festivals with him
And we're comparing notes and you know and and we're scouting films and he's Skyfilms
He's asking me whatever but there are films that we should not by any rights have had here
Like top of the line films that he was able to work deals and get them here
And it was amazing the solid schedule this year. Oh, it really really was

You didn't want to transform on the line. I didn't want to try and care about transformers
I didn't want the aircraft carrier GI Joe with the kung fu grip didn't care about beach head storm shadow or Duke
I wanted a motor home
So we literally they were like, okay, well you made Paris, Texas
Like I said don't judge you made some money on Paris, Texas. Why don't you buy yourself a motor home? Hey
Seven-year-old me was like, yes, let's do this now
So so we probably drove drove drove around the valley with me in the car in the back seat of the car
Looking at motorhomes
We drove to see me valley in woodland hills and uh, you know somewhere along the line of van i's
We found an old winnebego
And it we found an old winnebego and I was like yeah, I'm in I am down
And we bought a winnebego and I'll tell you what I swear to you

As a seven eight-year-old it was the best fort

The show was awesome. They it was a great show
That was a lot of incredible films that were honored and then my daughter was honored
Zoe do it. That's right for her rising star
Award. Yep, and she is indeed a rising star and I'm super proud. It's a good one
It's a good one. Let me let me let me tell you
Person from the person who gives away those awards. It's super cool to do it and it's super cool to get them
Yeah, it is I first I first heard this connection of your daughter
And this is this is true story
Wouldn't you guys were on the arsenal Hall show? A couple of years ago. She was promoting vampire academy right
And he's interviewing her and all of a sudden he says something about her mother and I was like oh real
And then the camera cuts to you and I was like okay mine now melted
And it was really kind of cool because
There's no way that you could have been any prouder at that moment that that smile that you had that was a mile wide
But at the same time it was kind of that feeling of it's kind of cool
But I really want her to have her moment
And I thought that was so awesome to see and now you're here with us because you're having the conversation tomorrow
With the screening of before I fall which is it's a big game because that just came out
Four weeks ago. Yeah, it's still on the theaters here. That's it's in Dallas and a bunch of theaters
So still yeah, it's a great movie. I'm so proud of it
She's so you know, it's just such a I'm so honored that she decided to like follow in my footsteps both my daughters
So, I mean, you know, it could be weird like I didn't want to do what my mom did, you know, mean either
She's caring black so she's an actor
Yeah, oh wow, so yeah, so it's intimidating to follow and you know, it totally is right? Yeah, I'm super proud of them
I feel like it might mean that I'm not overbearing and I didn't strap them to the to their chairs and make them watch all my stupid movies
I will not I will not use all and stupid movies in this woman in the same set. No, that dog show hunt
I don't care that dog don't hunt. Can I can I get it? Can I can I get a question in please do look?

I've acted before and I and I transitioned to behind the camera and you know, I pretty stuff now
What do you what do you like like what do you like about that like like it just it's so dynamic to be like
All that stuff happened in front of the camera and now all this other stuff is happening behind the camera
Like how do you feel about that relationship?
Well, I find that really interesting. It's just like being on stage. It's like
When you're on stage, you have the best view like the theater looks the best from that vantage point
And when I'm acting and I look at all the crew
I feel like it's the best show
You know, there is seeing everybody do all this crazy stuff and no one else gets to see that but us
I know isn't that crazy. Yeah, it is great
Do you go back to those moments when you go back and look at some of the projects you've done and
Where what are those moments that you watch and go? I remember that specific moment from that standpoint
It's always takes a long time for me to actually see the movie as a movie
Because I'm always thinking about other stuff, you know
So just that project that you worked on rather than the finished product. It was really interesting for me
Because I don't mean to bring this up again
But um back to the future they they I saw it a couple times like last year a couple years ago
They took the music out and had an orchestra play it. Oh wow
The Hollywood Bowl and I've got to sit in Hollywood Bowl with like 17,000 people and watch the movie after whatever
30 years and really watch it for the first time as a movie and from a director's point of view like as a film instead of just like oh wait
I'm not in this part. So wow
Whatever stupid thing that goes through your mind when you're just thinking about it as an actor
So it was really fun to watch a move, you know, it took that long
for me to watch a movie
100 you go through some of the same stuff and you go back and watch some of the stuff that you worked on especially when you were younger now
Are those yet do you still have those moments or can you just see them as films now? No, you know it take it takes a while um I mean it's
The the very for okay, so the very first time that I actually was on set um was in Paris Texas when the character walks down the stairs to see her
Dean the very first time and all that's pretty legit like Vim kind of kept us up hard for a couple of days
And was like you're walking on their belly anyway, so there's that moment yeah for sure
Lea when you see the crew and you're the actor and you're like are they watching me or am I watching them?
What's going on here? So there's that existential thing um but
Yeah, but yeah to answer your question. Yeah, man there there are those moments and and as as I grew up
Um especially with Paris, Texas because it's a layered film not so much with like a bit of surmars of mr. Norse
Um, but with Paris, Texas like as I grew up it changed on me, you know, and then I had kids and then it changed on me and then like
You know, now I'm like giving an award away at a festival
To filmmakers and I'm like wow, this is really crazy. What am I doing full circle thing? What am I doing here? Yeah, no
I'm sometimes I think like I'm pinching myself
What's going on, but anyway, it's really it's a great experience

Have you been through that with her? Yeah, I have she's been acting a really long time now. It's like
I don't know she's had a lot of movies
Um, so it's what's weird to me now is that shit like all I'll say you know
Can I help you with this and to be like no, dude? I got it like she
She's got it and she doesn't need any hell even today. I was like do you need help with the speech?
Mama, I've gotten awards before I can't handle it
And there's that moment, you know, I've got no words of yeah, okay
Kind of awesome. It's you know she she helps me
It's funny because we all help each other in my house, you know
We all like it's like a little
Weird like I don't know we all help each other because now you do a lot of self tapes
And Zoe when she does a self-tape she likes it shot like a movie with a really beautiful camera
Beautiful light beautiful sound she like wants it seriously
So we're like always making little weird movies all the time and you get to kind of do you get to see a lot of things through the way
She sees it or you just kind of just kick back and go
I'm just gonna let you do you and then I'm gonna watch it when it's when it's ready to be watched
Yeah, I direct her a lot, but she doesn't like it
I kind of figured this but
My boy Zoe she's actually been
Directed by her mother and her father. Oh, right. That's a unique experience. Yeah
Yeah, you could say that how hard is that to as when your husband's directing her versus when you're directing her how what's the dynamic there?

Exactly you do realize by the way she's directed an episode of one of your favorite probably your favorite show right now
Did it air two nights ago? I don't know. I'm not sure when it airs

I was great. It's so much fun
It's really though. It's I've directed a lot, but I've never directed something. I'm not in at all
So this is the first time so I was really proud of it. I'm gonna go back next season
Oh really good job and it's and it's a show that plays to you. Yes, very much so you are
I mean you are an integral part of that entire story arc of that show
I know I know they were like uh
I'm I'm in pre-pro and they shove this piece of paper at me and I go what's this they'll just sign it
I look at it. It's like this was so they could use a clip of me and Howard the duck when I'm having sex with the duck

I just show that to my wife the other night. She's like really?

True is it easy to take off the actor hat and put on the director hat or is there is is there that piece of you that's just like

There is that moment and for me. I realize what a frustrating
Little kid I was to all these directors that wanted me to do something very simple and just hit the mark

You know the thing is is when I'm uh directing is so hard but now when I'm acting I'm really happy not to be directing
Yeah, the only problem is is if someone's really

Great and I know I'm not going to get to my last scene or I'm not going to get
They have enough time to act. I start like
Start to just like well, maybe if I just did it this way we could just use we could cut out a shot
And then we could get I start to do that just because I I get like
You know because my mind starts to work only when things are going really arrive
Otherwise, I like to lay back if the director you like knows what they're doing
Um, then I'm fine. Okay. That's fair. If they don't I start to get crazy. I
Know we don't want to take too much of your time because there's a party going on inside
And we know the guy running the party so he's going to be mad if we hold you to anything coming up that you want to plug

Congratulations, and we were talking actually last week on this show
We were talking about the music because I've just put forth the idea that you're more than welcome to steal the credit for of
Just doing a Spotify playlist of the songs from this film
Well, the soundtrack will be some kind of playlist at some point
The score will be a whole different story
We are working something separate for the score that we we don't know exactly what yet
But we are gonna have some sort of release for the full score the way it's put out in the film talk about your approach to the score
Well, we did a lot of different things. We started off obviously testing you know testing things
I spent a lot of time playing in different keys
Writing I wrote it on the piano most of it on the piano. Okay
Start off playing in a bunch of different keys. I like to work in D a lot
but I
Kind of moved out of D for this one for some reason to just something moved out of D and
We fell to an F minor for most of it and I so I focused on that and then as we started working
We were doing a little bit of industrial sound. We were kind of going for this
A dark industrial sound and to match kind of the tone with with the punk rock scene and things of that nature
So we did a lot of tests with that stuff and it didn't quite really nail it and then we started working in some orchestra
pieces and all the sudden
The story like came alive was there a soundtrack before there was a score
It was kind of all at the same time man a lot of this went down. We were editing
He was editing and we were we were all in the same room together and he would be editing and
Putting stuff together and we'd be right and stuff. We would throw it on the screen all the same time
We would talk about it discuss it and then next thing you know
We'd be like that's good and then we can't work from there and let it's all trial trial and error. Yeah, that's what it's all about
so
Is as a composer
Is it easier for you to deal with composing for a film
Without knowing what's on the soundtrack or does that because is that kind of cloud?
What you're trying to do or does it really matter if you know or not?
Soundtrack had nothing to do because I've always wondered if when I'm trying to compose a score
I would think if I were a composer
I'm not sure that I'd want to know what kind of songs they were putting on the soundtrack
So it didn't kind of cloud what I was trying to do. I never even paid attention to what was going to be in the soundtrack
We went we tried to tell a story with sound and music
And as we did that that that's what we did
We how long did it really take you to finally get to where you think that you were like
Okay, now we're on the right path with the score
I would say probably 200 days wow and we finished the score in 289
So once you got once you hit the groove the groove was there and here we go
I said it during the Q&A
It's almost like once we found what we were looking for it it wrote itself
It was like a guiding hand just the funny thing is the piece that they wrote
They said it's not for this film exactly. There's no way it was for something a TV series something bigger right
Wow, and then and then we all went in there and we listened to it. We're like no. This is this is perfect. This this needs to happen
Don what's going on? I want to say the sound in this is incredible
Okay, when it starts in the first five minutes that build
The build the sound is perfect. Okay, I mean perfect perfect and when these scenes hit that really build up
You just fill it. I was blown away by the sound honestly. I was saying
For those of you that maybe listen for the first time when we review a film because we actually do separate episodes where we review film
We ask two questions how we don't give like stars or thumbs up thumbs down
We actually ask two questions question number one. Would you see this again? The answers know we're done
But the answers yes our spectrum runs from top to bottom
How far are you willing to go? So first run at the theater, twilight, matinee early morning second run
Red box. So you still actually leave your house netflix cable
Don does not give first run prime time rankings to very many films
Including the one we dropped today
I want to say he's given it out four times and we've seen over 40 films this year
Yours is one of them on every level
Don isn't very yeah, he's a very stingy critic when he wants to be
But he told me like right after he called me right after he saw he said do this is the film
And of course last Friday it was all anybody was talking about and it was
I mean to see this movie and I'm so glad I finally see it on sunday sunday sunday
So how are you I mean are you is the adrenaline wearing off? I mean you guys have been full throttle for a week now
Man the nerves are wearing off
But the adrenaline no, I mean we're curious to see what you know what what happens with this story
Because it's not our story
We just want to know where it can take itself just like I said the score wrote itself
This story is going to take itself to where it needs to go
So we asked you this question last week and I'm I've got a week to think about it
So I'm going to ask you again because I want to see if it's if maybe you've gotten a little bit more of a solid deal
If this could get I'm actually known I'm saying win. I'm not even ifing at this point
You haven't seen it yet though. So I'm I'm going to see I'm taking it there
When this gets bigger distribution
Is there a studio that you think could handle this film and market it the best
That's a question for a sheldon or a producer that's a question for the guy who researches that stuff
I mean you've got to have a guy. I will say I will say sheldon's dream come true
I hate saying this but A24 is a is a I'm a big fan of A20 it's an artist-based distributor that uh
They they believe in what the artist vision is and they they don't want to make a lot of changes and they
They get behind every every film that they put out there
That would be a dream come true. There's so many other
distributors, you know, I think our biggest goal is just to get the story out there however we can
And whoever wants to back it and get behind it if we have a good feeling about them
And they have a good feeling about us so we can work together
Let's do it if if I can agree with 10% of Don's feeling about this film if there's not a bidding war
Then they're then they're they're all communists. That's the only thing I can say because everything has come together for you guys really well
We want you guys to go enjoy this party because Devon's apparently turned it up to 11 in there

Two days ago working on the Marvel pilot that's here in town. It's got seven days on it. It was amazing
And also freaking cool and can you talk much about it because I know Marvel tends to like to put a lid on a bunch of things

I've never talked about it. I had a fun time
It was a stunt guy and

Oh, there's something else maybe with a couple of guys that are trying to get out of somewhere
Prison break. There you go and my wife just freaked out because she loves that show

My wife was a huge fan of that show as well
That family film here in Dallas, which was great. Yes. Yeah, very cool. Season is two and three. Yes
So I mean, that was a while ago, but you just finished this pilot now taught it can you talk about maybe how
Maybe it's the vibe change since prison break to now to the unnamed project that we can't talk about
Um vibe change as far as just the the just the film
The the industry in Dallas because this it gets bigger every year
I mean, he can attest to it. He's been neat deep in it forever. I am so excited about what's going on in here here in Dallas
It's one of the reasons why I've stayed here
um a lot of my
You know friends have moved and gone where the work is so to say and I've stayed here because I believe in Dallas
I believe in the talent here. I believe in um
I have to change gears for a second you brought up prison break and my first cousin is Marcus Allen
And Kevin Hooks. No, it's not. Yes. Oh my god. It's so cool. Kevin Hooks the executive producer of prison break
I was at his house one night and I was
Talking to him about the episode. He just got finished
Directing and I said um, so how do you feel? You know what? What do you think and he goes?
You know what Craig? I feel like I have the best crew that I've ever had my entire life here in Dallas, Texas
Wow, we'll take it. I don't have the depth that I have in LA
So if somebody messes up and someone has the wrong pair of shoes on I can't fire my
My wardrobe anyway, but at the same time um
The crew here it's family and we we love one another because I've worked cast and crew on several projects here
Um, it's a beautiful thing and I think that um, it's a shame if um
Sort of things that are going on right now would take that away
There are there are some challenges in the state government right now
So we talked a little bit about that last week. Do you want to talk more about that?
Um, I can say the basics is it looks like because the state legislature has decided to remove
The incentives that have been offered by the state in the past for film production to come to the state
Um, I I don't want to go too much into it. I don't know all the details
I know there's always nothing's a done deal until it's a done deal. It's not completely finished yet
Um, but we the Dallas Film Society is absolutely a proponent for
Incentives for more film production to occur in the state
Uh, it is a an industry that brings so much back to the state
Uh, and it's it'll be disappointing if we're not able to have
Some bargaining chips to have film production occur just like Craig show Craig shows
Hopefully here in Dallas or Texas
Uh, and we all benefit when that when film production occurs in the state so
I mean, I was watching a film last night and
In one of the intro clips they had you guys showed all of the the lists and things that Dallas has become
You know, when I saw one of the three busiest airports in the world
Like that's insane and they understand that we've spent was at 1.6 billion on our our downtown parks alone
Some of the some of those numbers were just staggering staggering and I think more of that needs to be out there
But let's talk about what's been happening for the last but nine days now is is day eight or nine is is day nine
We've done day nine
Of the film festival Dallas International Film Festival 11th 11th annual
About 140 130 140 movies have shown so far multiple venues
I'm having a blast come see movie tomorrow Craig
It's going great. Well, we've had some great movies great audiences a lot of filmmakers in town
And it was a thrill denied to honor

To to acknowledge our good friend who just recently passed Bill Paxton yes, uh, and to have a great great house
200 300 people and they're having a good time
Celebrating film and independent filmmaking and that's
The key as you said earlier the the crew that's here the family that's here that helps you shoot
It extends to what we do too the the team that we bring together to put on the film festival the audiences are here that in embrace film
Uh, the the folks that were able to the new folks that come in slowly but surely every year
I had no idea this is so cool. This is exciting. How much fun is this I saw so many great films. I'm going to go see more movies
That's what a film festival can bring to a community and that's what we're here for has there been a film this week
That you've been really pulling for but still surprised you on how well it did
Uh, our doc feature winner quest is absolutely stunning. I saw that I've I've now this now the third time
I've said it on this show tonight. That documenting wrecked me. Yeah. Yeah. It I said that when the credits rolled
This is how I should have felt at the end of boyhood and didn't this film took him 10 years to make it
and
I've said it before I'll say it again because I'm not doing the spoiler here
There's a turn that it takes about halfway through that it's been a long time since I physically had to catch my breath
Yeah, and this is a PBS independent lens film
it's
Paced really really well a lot of times that one of the biggest things about documentaries is
You know, I'm looking at my watch constantly. How long have I been here?
This thing belies. It's the perfect pace
And it's literally we talked about this with Sarah earlier this couple literally through it all
I mean, there's not an emotion that's not represented in this film right and it's absolutely gorgeous
Anything else that you were really really happy with with the turn-off for me
I mean, I'm not sure you're happy with the whole festival, but anything stand out for you. I'm thrilled so far. I mean
Who knew a card mechanic? Oh, I love that
Who's blind a card magician? Who's blind?
Could be so enthralling. I mean the movie dealt
Is terrific and it that it won in a one-hour audience award as well
So and I don't want to just tout the one the winners. I mean, it was a great movie, but there's just
There's something great about great filmmaking and you don't always you don't know where it's gonna come from
Just because you have a name or whatever doesn't
That's what a film festival brings. You never know. That's what it brings and that's why we're bringing to Dallas
And what's even better is yeah, there's you know, we're deep into the festival
But they're still films showing at this festival that you haven't showed yet. Yeah, okay
I can think of it like three right off the bat
Advocates small enough to jail. Small enough to jail is a great movie. I'm gonna check that
That's on my agenda for tomorrow small enough to jail
It's a story of the only bank that was sued by the government after the 2008 financial crisis. Oh wow

Really they fought the battle and and it is I it's a great movie lost city of z tomorrow night
Yes, you know, you know getting a lot of pub. That's actually getting wide release here in a couple of weeks
But you get to see it first at the Dallas International Film Festival
Sunday night patty cakes is closing the festival yeah patty cakes is great
And I mean, I was telling Sarah earlier. I was kind of like I'm definitely gonna see that and then two days ago
I got the email. It's getting wide release in July
So I'm like now I'm gonna have to get there earlier because now everybody knows I was kind of hoping that was gonna
One of the best kept secrets, but now I'm gonna have to go see it right
It's just such a strong it's stronger every year
It's like you guys just keep raising the bar
And I don't know how you get to raise the bar because I'm like this is the pinnacle
This is the bar and then the next year. I'm going. Oh my god. I gotta get my sleep now
Well, it's a testament to our programming team. It's James her James foul Sarah Harrison Daniel Lobbs
They're the guys who make this stuff happen. They they have the connections that know how the knowledge
And they go out and get the movies and my my little role is just to try to give them the resources to do what they need to do
And don't but don't sell yourself short you you do an amazing job the entire staff does
And thank you the fact that this grows every year, but it still has that family feel
That everybody talks about it's like they come to the Dallas International Film Festival because
It's so I hate these were non-traditional, but in a very very good way don

Yeah, I let this word to where we just started talking about the dead and black film festival
And what I really thought was really neat during your talk last night was
It's not just a film festival that there's a lot going on and tell our listeners about it
It's really kind of a cultural experience as well
I mean we've got spoken word a poetry slam that's going on
We've got comedy. We had a music concert this year
We even have a art exhibit at the University of North Texas. They have a art exhibit the museum on the square and then
And we're located and didn't on the square so they're like restaurants and a lot of things going on
The square's such a cool place. Yeah, so it's kind of a neat
You know you'd come spend the weekend with us and just have a real experience
some really great film and
You know
Take some breaks and do some other things as well and you guys were the community partner mr. Fowls. Yeah for Davion
With showed last night. I was there. I saw it. I was great. I was yeah, it was it's one of those films
And a friend of the show Kevin from the movie brothers. I texted him last night. I told him I'd met you guys
Okay, and he asked me in my opinion and I said Davion is an
Artsier version of moonlight. That's the only way I could describe it
It's really it's well done
It's one of those movies you really have to focus on though
It's you're not one of those movies like you can just put on them and go grab something to eat or whatever
Like it's a movie you need to really sit down and watch. It's very raw. It's very emotional
What did you think about it? Well, I liked it because one thing it a lot of times when we think of gang activity or we think of young people
You think immediately the Chicago when and still in rural America. There's lots going on there and
In terms of gangs or kids trying to belong and fit in somewhere
That's kind of a universal thing whether you're in a rural area or a city or whatever and you know it
Put some light on things issues that kids are dealing with and we were talking about this yesterday Linda how it is
It's you're in these rural areas with nothing else to do
So, you know, whether you're getting involved with math or we're talking about the opiate thing that's happening around the country now
It's in the movie but she has a light on it and gives a real face

No, but it just but it gives you an idea like this is happening. You didn't know about it happening in Arkansas

Who is and we he now we're talking about it's reminiscent of his film George Washington
It's sort of it's floating and it's ethereal and it's sort of and it gives you this just
Lays it out for you and does again no answers
But here's the problem or here's the situation
What do you think and I try to love about that film and that director's hot right now
I mean, I'm on it's gonna be and he also did the score for the film too
And he's like is it 26 25. I hate him. I remember 26
Way in the rear view I remember what was amazing too is he used in experience actors
I mean you had to starve to show
This young man that never acted before yeah, exactly. He did a fabulous job. I think he's taking our class
Acting classes now, you know, he potentially now has a career ahead of him. Yeah
So that was wonderful as a good stuff. All right mr. Fest. I know that you've got a you're on a tight time schedule
So I got to ask you a couple of questions real quick. I'm actually good. I'm just yeah, I'm good

And we've asked this of your of your two cohorts. We have to ask this of you sure has there been a film in the last eight days
That you were really pulling for and it really did well and you were happy because you weren't sure
Yeah, the relationship which won the grand jury prize
um
It's a film that some people
Uh, yeah, I I'm a totally leopatra under the bus
um
He's a it's pretty good movie, but I don't know why you love it so much. I go because I think it's smart
I think it's entertaining. I think it's
Inventive it is magical at times and at the same time it takes it pulls the face back literally at times on
Quick relationship and in the way of society now is a now now Instagram world
You meet somebody at a party you go home with them
You have a one-night stand that turns into a four-day weekend. That's like holy what am I doing with this?
This is dumb and it's we do that right now is where we are and it just pulls it back in a magical again inventive way
And I just are fell in love with the film and I love that our audiences fell in love with the film
And they spent after the film was over they had with the directors hung out with these high school kids
And they just were just saying yes, we understand this and that that for me
That next generation that's the most that's important and that was very
Satisfying to have those kids talking to filmmakers afterwards
So I'm very happy for the relationship and I'm very and just strong lineup overall
And I'm very excited like that. I'm I'm actually gonna get to see bomb city because I've missed both of the screenings
And it's gonna screen they they were just here telling us about Sunday after new afternoon
And I am going to do everything within my power and move heaven and earth if I have to
To get here for that film. I'm also looking forward to patty cakes on Sunday night. Oh, man

And it got picked up for distribution in July the second biggest sale at Sundance is here ten and a half million dollars on a one million dollar budget

She learned it for the movie
Yeah, and as you see it you're gonna freak out like how'd you ever just learn to do this
This is dumb. She's so good. It is a very entertaining movie. We also have to promise this weekend too. Yes. Oh, so you love this
We have I gotta I gotta throw this up. We have this movie step I got plans to see that's two o'clock on Sunday, right?
Boy, we're gonna have a step team come out and do a dance either before or after I don't know
What you want to do before after I got that got picked up for distribution, too
Frog searchlight. Yeah again. So yeah, so I think I'm gonna do it before
Because people don't know what a step they don't know what's a step show. They don't know what step show is
I don't know any of that stuff. I could I used to go to didn't do you and T to see the step shows up there

Award winner that I if it doesn't get why distribution I may cry like a child because I almost did during the film
Was Quest. Oh
Quest is great. Quest was amazing. It's a great film. Actually, I actually called kev. I saw kev the next take his Kevin
I worked together and I said dude. I don't care what you have to do
Find a way to see this film and he just looked at me. I'm like trust me. Yeah
It he vs an independent lens. Absolutely killed it. It's a great film when you go in the filmmakers going in to make one film
And something happens and a another film it's it's one of those magical meant-to-be things
And so Quest was that film when I heard about it. Oh, it's cool. Oh, what happens?
Yeah, that like we've talked all night about
The turn it takes in the middle because I don't want to ruin it for people. No, don't don't
Like I physically had to catch my breath
And it's one of those those films you're going to hear about later kind of like life animated was last year
And tower was last. I finally got to see tower a couple of weeks ago
Towers on Netflix absolutely. I actually I caught it on pbs. Oh, well, they showed it on independent lens. Absolutely blew me away
Oh, what else do you guys have coming up? Anything that's going to tie into the dead and black film festival
