listening to this within a few days of the actual dropping of this podcast as the kids
like to say, you probably figured out what we're here to review because whenever we do
one of these, it is to review something. This is no exception. John Favro back in the
director's chair with Disney as he does the live action version of the jungle book.
Starring the, oh, I guess, starring because there's only one human in the dog on thing.
Well, that has any lines anyway. Neal Sethi playing moglie. Some people say maglie. Some
people say moglie tomato tomato potato patato. It's called the whole thing on feature like
debut for you. Yes. Okay. Also featuring the voices of people like Bill Murray Ben Kingsley,
Idris Elba, Lupita Nyango, Scarlet Johansson, John Carlo Esposito, Christopher
Walkin, Gary shandling in his final film role. And Favro and his kids are in it too.
Here's what you need to know. First of all, if you don't know the story, welcome back
from the cave. Moglie is the man cub raised in the jungle by the animals and this, you
know, especially with the wolves. John Carlo Esposito plays Achila, his defecto father, Lupita
Nyango, paying his defecto mother, Roxha. And things get a little weird for him when
Chercon played by Idris Elba. What I said on this show many, many times is one of the greatest
villains in the history of television as string or bell in the wire. He wants a little revenge
on some things that happened back in the day. Say the tiger because some people may not know
the name, the tiger. He's Chercon. Okay. The tiger. You can look at that. Okay. It's fine. So
basically, the plan is to get mowgli back to the area where the humans live. So Chercon maybe
won't try to take his revenge. Well, Chercon kind of pushes the issue a little bit and things
go downhill from there. So you're welcome. Before we even start this thing, we have to think
Susan Jenna, everybody at Susan Jacobs and Disney. We love them. They are incredible people.
We love those ladies. Thank you so lot of people at this screening. They handled it like the
professionals that they are. Always enjoy working with them. Thank you so much for these. Some of
our favorite people. And we also got to see this in the IMAX 3D, which we're not gonna play into
into this thing a little bit later. I'm not even gonna bury the lead here. I love this movie,
cosine right there with you. I'll third that and I'll fourth it. And I said it about padding
tin and I'm gonna say it about this. I don't know how you found a bunch of talking animals,
but if Disney so they have the resources, visually this thing is absolutely stunning.
Like I remember remember the first time you saw a babe and you were like the pigs talking. Yeah.
Why is the pig talking? The talk is the talking pig? You do this with every character in this film.
Because it's not when they have the animation with the animals. It's not like those
really cheesy effects that used in some of the commercials. Like I read in the trivia
that with Baloo, every frame was five hours of man labor. Are you serious? Every frame took
five hours to render because of all of the fur. Oh, you're kidding. This is the detail that this
film goes into. First of all, it's Favre. Iron Man, Iron Man 2. So he knows how to deal with
visual effects. Now I did find the funny thing that I did with the credits of does say it was
filmed the downtown Los Angeles. I see it was the only filming. I said you see what you did there, Disney.
Visually just absolutely gorgeous. The sets done to the tea. The animals movements were very fluid.
I didn't see a lot of herky jerky to it. There's one scene which I love to death and that's when
you're going down the river with the boy on the on the top of the river. Madly hits it on Baloo's
stomach. And you mentioned that in your written review, which is at www.theclubhousepodcast.com.
Which is our website. Thank you, sir. And I'm glad you mentioned that because that kind of
segues into one of the things I want to touch on because this review is going to be a lot
different than a lot of the ones we do because we can't really break this down by category.
You kind of have to lump everything together with this. The way this film is done.
Pharaoh makes a very bold choice in this film by taking the music out of it.
You get a little bit of bare necessities. You get a little bit of, I want to be like you.
But walk in who plays King Louis. He kind of shatters it. He doesn't really sing. I want to talk
like you. I want to be like you. That's my walk and it's not very good admittedly.
But I thought it was a bold choice that paid off because make no mistake here, kids. This film
is a lot more intense and a little bit darker than the animated feature you remember. And that's
one thing I put in my review at theclubhousepodcast.com. That's our website, which I also did.
Yeah, it is usually we say with Disney. It's a good for the entire family. Not this one. Yeah,
five six year old. I don't it may be too much because it goes a lot. There's about four instances.
I can think of where it got real dark compared to the cartoon. Well, and friend of the show, Kevin
Daniels, who I spoke to today about this. One half of the movie brothers, you can find them at the
movie brothers BRUTHAS.com. His kids are 11 and 13. Okay. So I'm like, your kids, they would be good.
If your younger one was any younger, you'd be walking online. Because the violence is not comedic here.
No, it's the violence. It's a very intense intense. And I don't want to go. I don't want to do too
many spoilers here. But the scene where Chercon launches his plan to lure Mabli back,
that actually caught me off guard. Yeah. I would whoa, that just happened. You know? And so
remember, if you've got this, the young ones show in the animated feature, you're going to be a lot
better off. Yeah, if you wouldn't take them to pirates, don't take them to this. Agreed. That's a good analogy
to use. But the violence was really quick though. It wasn't really good. Yeah, it was about four of them.
Where really, it might be too much for the climax of the film alone. Oh, yeah. That violence alone.
There were some young kids in there and I was like, boy, I would love to be a fly on the wall
in the car on the way home. Because they really study. I mean, you see these animals attacking each other
and you're like, that's got to be the way it happens in a while. And it does. That's what I really liked about it.
And I know, I absolutely agree with you. I totally dug that about it. And again,
Fabrow making a very bold choice, but it pays off. I don't want to say one more wolf pack.
And you know what I mean by when I say wolf pack? Oh, I should have put that in here.
Scramble, scramble, scramble, scramble. Let's say I've already given it away. I can't do it now.
No, you can still work now because then it's cheap. Well, no, that kind of attitude you can't. I'd be
Mick Foleying this thing. But this to me, I was a little nervous going in because I was like,
I am a Fabrow Apologist. Fabrow gets a pass from for a long time. I mean, all the way back to
swingers. Always been a fan. Remember when he did his scent on friend. Yes, you know,
Mr. MMA fighter. You want to be an outfit fighting champion, sir. But I was like, man,
don't screw this up. Because even the trailers, I was kind of like, you're not telling me enough.
Then it's doing its job. You know, and I was, I don't want to be told. I was very, very happy
when the credits rolled. Another thing about the music, Scarlett Johansson, who plays Kha.
She does sing trust me, but it's done over the end credits. So he relies on veteran
score writers to do this. Um, I don't have that. I'm not the rich of Sherman.
Is it Sherman or Sherman? Um, then I don't know. I'm looking up right now.
What are you doing? That's this one thing I want to bring up. Please do.
Man, Chad, we're talking. John DeBony did the score to this. The score. Yes, but as far as the
the lyrics to the to the, no, I'm not one of them. I'm talking about the classics. I'm talking
about the new score. Okay. Really stands on its own, setting the tone. Go ahead.
But the one thing I say is after we saw the film, and we're leaving, I went to Chad. And
because it's been a while since I saw the original jungle book, but I have seen it as we all have.
Yeah, and he was, that's a, was there, there are some differences from the cartoon.
Oh, absolutely. There are, there are some stuff that's a lot of the stuff from the film. I remember
seeing in here, uh, me from the anime cartoon, I remember seeing the film, but there are some things
which they take the liberty of not being in the original cartoon. You know, so I thought the flow was
good. I thought the flow was incredible. The storyline are really did like. So they're taking
a new week. It's not just jungle book, the cartoon made into a film. It's with the differences.
People are different spin on it. Yeah, exactly. Which I really really enjoyed. And it didn't get
off the rails kind of like Alice in Wonderland did, where it was like exactly the different
take on a, on a story that we thought we had stayed in the ballpark. Right. It's the best way.
Because if they were respectful to both the original film and the source material that the original
film was based on. Am I the only one that kind of, uh, moment to hear Gary Schaling's voice?
Yeah, I agree with you. That was a rough deal for me. Because yeah, of course, as we're recording
this, he passed away less than a week before we saw the film. I want to say, Bury.
Bill, Bill Murray is the Lewis. Absolutely. Oh, hit it out of part. Oh, he portrays
Belloo in a way where you kind of see the conman side of the bear. There's my one question
which I thought was kind of neat. Yeah. Can you name somebody who could have done that part better?
I can't think of anyone. Not right off the bat. No. Goodman is the voice. I kept expecting
to hear every time I saw it. But yeah, I just couldn't think of some Murray was incredible on this.
Elba incredible on this address. I could watch Idris Elba read the phone book.
Idris Elba and and Ben Kingsley. I think we're probably the both perfect cast.
Kingsley as a big era. Oh, my god. And again, Ben Kingsley is everywhere in the last one.
Yeah, it is. And I'm not complaining because I'm a huge Ben Kingsley fan always have it. It's like,
I can't, I was like, are we sure that they didn't somehow get Sebastian Cabot to do dialogue again?
And I'll tell you who else really knocked me out was Lupita Nihongo. Yeah.
Her portrayal of Roxia. She really gave a good listen to a good, I didn't know what I'm looking for.
I'm portrayal for lack of a better term of the protective mother. Yeah, they really fleshed her
out sold it. Yeah, and it was absolutely gorgeous. If I had one thing, I kind of didn't like it don't
we wrong. But okay, Sethi, this was his first role. Correct. His first major film debut.
Did incredible for it. But I just with this character in the way he played it,
I think he had too much of a little bit of an attitude chip on a shoulder compared to the cartoon,
which I got to know. Talk right in that microphone. I'm sorry, but so it kind of took me way a little
bit because I thought he had a little bit of a too much of a chip on a shoulder,
the way he played the role. Because I remember as a good kid, loving kid and all that, but
sometimes he just got really shook some attitude, which I didn't like too much. That'd be my
one criticism if I had anything. Well, the original muggly did that. He didn't want to go back to
the man building. Yeah. Don't talk right in the microphone. You really show the chip into the
shoulder on that. I mean, but he had, but he had to to keep up with the tone of the movie,
just how dark it was. Yeah, I thought he was fine. Yeah, I thought he did a really job.
By the way, did you notice, uh, I don't know if any of y'all read into it, the international voice
casting is particularly the Indian versions of. Yes, who played Baloo,
Earfine Khan, and I don't know if you remember this, Don, but that's the guy that owned and ran
Jurassic World. He really does the voice of Baloo and India. And it actually got released a week
early in India, just as a, to, to trip you, because it's so heavily east in the influence.
And it made $30 million. I think, I mean, that's where it's supposed to take place. What's
an India, wasn't it? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's, that's, but there's a lot of influence there, too.
Yeah, that's the reason why they changed King Louis from an orangintank to a gigantic
pithaca, because they're orangintanks in India. And I got to say, as much as I love walking,
him as King Louis was weird for me. If I've got to have one criticism, that's it.
Him singing was horrible. Like, it was to me. And I put this again in my written review,
which is www.cobasplacas.com, which is still our website. It was like he was channeling
a brando and the godfather. Yeah, I'll keep with the same emotional range. If you bring me
the red flower, I will protect you. And there's a moment.
I'm going to say this. And I'm not going to ruin it because you'll know it when you see it.
There is a moment right before you hear walkin for the first time. And if you don't know what
you're looking for, it will go clean past you. But it almost took me out of the film.
Because when it happened, I looked at Andrew. And apparently, I'm one of the very few people that
caught it. Yeah, wait, red past me. But as soon as I looked at Andrew, Andrew went, oh my god,
I just saw it. Like, I don't know. I don't know if it was, if it was, if it was, if it looks could
kill moment or just because he knows me well enough that if I look at him like that,
something has just happened. And I've mentioned it to a couple of people and that have wanted
it spoiled. And they went, no, I think it's funny actually. I loved it. I loved it. I loved it.
Is, but it almost kind of took me out of the moment. It took me completely out because as soon
as I saw that, I go, really, are you kidding me? I think it's clever. I think it's clever. I, you
got to admit it. But like I said, if I've got to have one criticism that you then you're really
splitting. Right. I mean, I'm a slutty here's at that point. And I walk in was just an odd choice for
me for King Louis. Especially if you're going to make King Louis 25 feet tall and way about 19
tons. It was a great sequence. The chase sequence is gorgeous. But that was just a weird choice for
me. That's one of the four moments that I thought that was a little too intense. Yeah, it was
pretty intense moment. So we ready to do the final analysis on this thing. Yeah, sure. Don, you're
ready. Let's do it. All right. The way we do the final analysis on this show. We don't give you thumbs
up thumbs down. We don't give you letter grades. We don't give you number rankings are audience
whom we affectionately refer to as the empire. They want us to go deeper. So we're going to do that
for you. Two questions. Question number one is would you see this film again? And we're all going
to answer it. If the answer is no, we're done here. But if the answer is yes, the follow-up question
is going to be how far are you willing to go to see it? Full price in the theater. Maybe out of
twilight. Maybe a matinee. Maybe early morning. Maybe second run to dollar theater. Maybe you're
going to wait for it red box. Maybe you're going to wait for it on Netflix. Maybe you're going to
wait for it on stars. Because that'll be the only cable channel I'm going to carry because they
have a Disney deal. Andrew, let's start with you. Would you see this film again? Yes, I would.
How far are you going? I'm at nay. Okay. Yeah. That's about all the bars I will go. Very, very,
very quick on the answer there, sir. Yeah. Well, he's, I really, I saw the first movie, but I was
like three. So, you know, recollection of that means nothing in them. Chad, would you see this again?
God. Yes. How far are you going? Uh, I would want to go see this in any format I could. Fair enough,
the most premium format. If I could see it in Dolby Vision and Dolby in a Dolby cinema,
I'd be all over it. Don. All right. This is going to be kind of, I'm going to add a little twist to this.
Okay. For the family who's old enough, I recommend seeing the cartoon first. Fair enough. Okay.
Then seeing this as a matinee, then discussing it at dinner after seeing it as, I mean, that's a
twilight scene after twilight. You know what I'm saying? Okay. So, go to the twilight's showing. Go to dinner
after discuss differences between the original cartoon and what you just saw. I would see this again.
I am telling you, I'm acts 3D. It really does make a movie. I, I can't give the full price because I
thought it was too dark. That's the only reason I'm not getting it right now. I hear you. Yeah.
But the 3D in the I'm acts is so gorgeous with this film with that setting. I feel like if you
see it any other way, you're denying yourself part of the experience. It's that good. Okay.
Chad, uh, 3D worth the price extra. Absolutely. The 3D. Yes. I'm kind of 50, 50 on it.
On that one. Well, okay. Fair enough. Mainly the, the I'm acts I couldn't recommend because I don't,
I don't think the younger children, if your younger children do go see it, they want to appreciate it.
Oh, yeah. I said that at the top. Don't take a method as show movie go or just mean my
junior high up easily. Again, and we are not going to thank you so much to Susan Chen Airbait,
Susan Jacobs and Disney from Biden. We cannot thank them enough for everything. It is the newest
version of the jungle book directed by John Favro with voiced talent of everybody in their brother.
