Whatever we do one of these, it is to review something and this is no exception.
Today, we are here to review the latest film from director J. Blakeson.
And you know what, J does not have an abbreviation point after his first initial.
Because he's extreme.
Is he really?
No, he's not.
Adapting the first book in the trilogy.
I don't know him.
I can't judge him that way.
I'm done.
I'm already done.
Are you very popular trilogy of books known as the fifth wave?
Based on the books by Ricky Yager.
Very popular with the kids with the clothes in the hair.
Here's what you need to know.

Chloe Grace Morette.
I want to say current.
She's been the assistant.

She plays Cassie Sullivan.
Cassie is your normal high school student who has kind of a rough day.
As she's at soccer practice at her local high school.
And alien ships just show up.
One hovering over her town in Ohio.
Her dad played by the great Ron Livingston.
He's got a lot of space.
You know, I'm a fan of.
And her mother played by Maggie Siff.
Don does that name mean anything to you.
Yes.
So don't.

I'm trying to figure it.
Go for it.
I'm trying to blank.
But I know the name.
If I call her Terra Nulls.
Does that mean anything to you?

She's also currently on a show that you're enjoying called billions.
To start at first episode.

Sam played by Zachary Arthur, who you might know from Transparent.
But for a few days, the ship just kind of sit there.

She's got a crush on a blader school named Ben Parrish played by Nick Robinson.
And then about 10 days in.
They throw an EMP on the planet that takes out every.
Takes on all the electricity and every engine on earth.
And things get worse from there.
Basically, it's your.
It's your alien invasion film.
Before we start this whole thing, we have to think everybody at Maroc.
Julie Candace.
It's a great job.
It's a great job at this screen.
Yeah.
Fun times.
Studio movie.
Great time.
Love having them having us out.
Yeah.
Great.

And that's very important.

Oh boy.
We're to start.
Yeah.
I mean, I guess we can start with the.
With the visual part of it, like I visually, I didn't have an issue with it.
I thought it looked great.
If you if it does come out on home video later on, which it probably will, because that's the way things go.
If you want to show off your home theater system.
This is a good movie with that, because your subwoofer will need to cigarette by the end of it.
Yeah.
Um.
I didn't have any problems with it visually.
Me neither.
But I will say there were some good nature shots.

I put on there that some of those shots are really, really good.
Oh, that's a great.

I love when the tsunami's hit.
Which is I was that.
That was the second wave.
Yeah.
Yeah.
With the earthquakes.
Yeah.
When those things hit and the buildings move, I wasn't impressed with the CGI on that.
Yeah.
Very, very.
We got to see this in, um, um, you know, at the studio.
I think it's a very big theater.
Yeah.
A very big theater.
People around us, I think, were really into the look also.
And I thought it was shot well.
Yeah.
You know, I didn't cringe at some of the camera shots.
Because this is J. Blakeson's first feature film.
He's done some short films before this.
Yeah.
But this is his first big feature, especially with some of the star power in this.
We have Shriver, who you know.
I mean, he knows this.
Who is Ria Bello, who kind of freaks me out when I saw her in this.
They put a lot of makeup on her.
Yes.
And there's probably on purpose.
However, I was reading that her character in the books is a male.
Really?
I thought I read an IMDB today.
So that was kind of weird for me.
I mean, I haven't read the books.
I can't say it is a trilogy of books.
Uh, I guess there's three.
Yeah.
There's this one.
Then there's two more.
Right.
No.
No.
They're out.
I just for me.
Yeah.
Now this is a hard film to review as a 40 something white guy before we go to the makeup.
That one scene.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That really hit the point of the makeup.
But it's smoother for you.
Of course.
Yeah.
As a 40 something white guy.
This is hard film for me to review because if you were to take the pantheon of the target
audience for this film, I couldn't be farther from it.
I'm not a 12 to 18 year old girl.
And the boys that have to go with them for this film.
Or the big sci-fi geeks.

Now, Chad, you and I are fairly well.
We have our thumb on the pulse of pop culture.
I'd like to thank so.
When a film is pitched to a studio.
How do they normally pitch it?
Like how do they put the framework around a film?
Almost every time.
As far as who they're gearing it toward?
No.
I'm just trying to describe a film.
There's a certain formula that everybody uses.
I have no idea which one.
It's this meets this.
Oh, oh.
Okay.
It's dihard on a bus.
Yeah.
Okay.
There is a point when it can be too much.
Because to me, this was independence day meets the hunger games,
which means Twilight meets every queen successful film franchise in the last 15 years.
Meet a divergent meets exactly.
It got into overload for me.
Am I questioning on the last movie if they do the third movie?
Here's going to be in two parts.
I don't know.
Probably.
Now being being spoiler free.
Yeah.
And Chad, we'll talk about this off air.
There is a certain element to this film that I think if they do all three again,
I haven't read the books.
But if we're leading up to where I think we're leading up to with this,
I might throw something.
Wow.
Like, there were even a couple of points in this film where stuff happened
and people were laughing.
And I was like, not a laughing moment.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Things got a little weird in the theater.
I had a certain couple of points here.
Remind you of a certain screen that we went to many, many moons ago about a certain witch and
Blair and it was a sequel there.
Um, they didn't have power.
That's for sure.
And I can't.
I don't fault the performances.
I thought the performance is great.
Oh, Shriver.
You know, we have Shriver.
Again, huge fan.
This guy is the voice of HBO documentary.
Yeah.
And a featured actor in my favorite movie of the year last year.
Yes, he was.
And as one of mine as well.
Chloe Grayson arrests.
Again, she's the current it girl.
And also he's making things happen.
Ray Donovan.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You know, I don't really, again, I can't blame anybody that's in this thing.
Well, if we're going to go and acting, there's something I will try to put my review that I've kind of put that.
I didn't hate any of the acting.
And I didn't really find any faults.
And of course, my shadow goes to leave.
But we have Shriver.
I always put that there was just something missing in it.
I think there were.
I agree with it was missing that something where I think they spent too much time trying to build these relationships and a love story and the walking in a woods and all that.
This film should have had a lot more action.
I think.
And again.
And again.
And not knowing the source material.
Yeah.
I felt like there were some things that they spent too much time on and other things.
They just kind of breeze through.
That's what I'm saying.
Yeah.
I kind of wanted to care about the family a little bit more than they presented to me.
The kid that plays the the the crush Ben Paris chat.
You would know him as Zach from Jurassic World.
See the youngest one of the oldest one.
I think he's the oldest.
Okay.
Zach Mitchell is how he's.
Because I hated the youngest one.
I hope that.
Oh, he also did a he also did an episode of Boardwalk Empire.
But I just thought it was missed.
They tried to hard to build the relationships and it just didn't click.
I didn't see that great great chemistry between these characters and he's.
It's been too much time.
And in the interest of full disclosure.
This is going to be huge with the tween crowd.
I would not be surprised if Monday morning.
It is announced that the second book in the series has been optioned in this ready to go.
There was nothing currently listed to to to to indicate that to me.
But I think this is going to be that movie that all the tweens are going to go see.
And it's going to be a huge thing.
I don't think it's going to be.
Twilight or anything of its ilk.
But I think that that this is going to be that one, you know.
I think it could do as well as the divergence series seems to be doing.
But that that series got a lot more books.
Yeah.
I don't think it'll do that good.
But I think it will keep that little crowd in there.
I love the action that they had there.
But it just was not enough.
It was too much of the lobby gaging.
Yeah.
There was there seemed to miss something special.
You have like someone kind of cool.
And then you have like 20 minutes of just nothing.
You know.
And there were it dragged in a few parts for me.
I thought most of the plot twists.
If you don't see them coming, you don't watch movies very much.
Like it's there's there is a certain level of predictability.
But again, I'm looking at it through the eyes of a man of a certain age who is not really the target audience for this.
But we've done stuff in the past.
Not agreed.
Agreed.
It's not a talking audience that we thought weren't wasn't credible.
But it's very few times that I can say I know this movie isn't for me, but it's going to be huge with the kids with the clothes in the hair.
And I really believe that with this.
It's not that I didn't like the film.
I didn't like it for like this is not a film that we would all get together and watch.
Right.
If we were 13.
And we wanted to see Chloe Grace Morets.
And it just happened to be a kind of movie that a girl we'd like to go on a date with would want to see.
Then absolute or the girl's somber party kind of thing that throw it into the DVD players.
Maybe.
Something I want to throw out there.
Sure.
A film that we all saw last year that was so far out of our demographic.
It wasn't even funny.
But we all enjoyed it.
Paper towns.
Apples and orange.
I know, but it's odd that we can watch a movie like that and get something out of it.
But yet something like this.
But now I had made my top 10 of the years.
But let me tell you the difference.
What was the one thing that all three of us said about paper towns?
Did it do you know?
Like a John Hughes film.
More than that.
It was relationships we all been through.
It was real life.
Bingo.
And it was one of those things.
I saw that more like we've had that moment.
Yeah.
Last time I checked.
No.
I haven't had an alien invasion.
So I didn't know.
I didn't fight with this film.
And don't get me wrong.
You know, I'm not saying that it's hypocritical in any way.
Just it's odd to me that we can get more out of that film when something like this.
It's kind of more in our old wheelhouse being a sci-fi action adventure film is not nearly as compelling as a story of a kid hunting down a girl.
But also it also opens in the shadow of another sci-fi epic.
True that.
True that.
But to me it just it kind of speaks to how much our taste and film has evolved and changed over the last
there for years that maybe that we can get more out of a twin drama then we can get out of a twin sci-fi film.
I was looking at the trailers.
I was really into this from the trailer and I'm thinking you know it's just going to be like another independent stay contact
something like that and it's apples and oranges between the day.
And it's just I don't know.
It's it's no contact.
And again, I can't say I hated the film.
But I can't say I love the film.
And you hit the nail on the head.
Everybody said there's there's something missing.
It's that it factor.
It just didn't speak to you.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean you just didn't connect with it.
There were a lot of people that were enjoying it in the theater and I guess maybe there's just something about it that missed me.
If you know I guess that makes any sense.
Is there anything else we want to add to this for we get to the final analysis?
I think we got it.
No.
Shattered they all seem to know.
No you answered my question.
The way we do the final analysis on this show.
We don't give you one to ten.
We don't give you thumbs up thumbs down.
We don't give you star rankings or letter grades.
Our audience whom we affectionately refer to as the empire.
They want us to go a little bit deeper.
And so we will.
I'm going to ask two questions about myself and have done.
Question number one is would you see this film again?
The answer is no.
Then we're done here.
If the answer is yes, then it turns into the way we rank it.
It's how far are you willing to go to see it.
Will you pay for price in a theater?
Will you go to a Twilight show?
No.
Good morning.
Maybe second run at the dollar theater?
Would you go to Red box to rent it?
Would you stream it through Netflix?
Would you wait for it on cable?
Would you see this again?
Yeah.
I would see it on HBO, but I'll recommend it as a Red Box.
Okay.
I don't know that I would see it again under certain conditions.
That's one thing in the background.
That makes an extent.
Okay.
Like if I'm with some people and they got to kid the round.
And the kids wanted to, you know.
They want to watch something that's really going to appeal to them.
I'd sit through it again as as a rental maybe, you know, but if if I had to wait till cable that wouldn't bother me either
Again, I can't say I hated it, but I really can't say I loved it, but
We're not going to compare to this film. It kind of amounts to a hell of a beat
We're not going to give it the evil no exactly, but for we close out again
