We are here today to review the latest film from director Antoine Fuqua,
who you would have known from training day, shooter, the equalizer,
Brooklyn's finest.
It's at that bait as well.
Prince's video for the most beautiful girl in the world.
And the replacement killers.
His brand new film is called South Pa.
It is written by Kurt Sutter.

Has a beautiful wife,
who he's known since they were both orphans.
Name to Maureen.
They have a beautiful little daughter.
Name to Leila, played by Uno Lawrence.
And then he loses everything.
And that's all it's the deeper going to go.
And then he has to literally fight his way back up.
That's all that's the deepest I'm going to go into this thing.
Let's just start with the story itself.
Before we get in.

Everybody at Allied and Kelsey for inviting us to this thing.

What do you think of the story here?

Story line.
I loved it.
Fast paced.
Move good.
I didn't really see me drag time.
And I didn't really know what to expect.
I saw the trailers.
And then at first, you know, he's a boxer.
So I'm not going to give anything away here.
Then first boxing match.
You learned so much from him.
And the first 15 minutes from the first boxing match.
And I didn't realize that.
And I'll say this over and over again.
I remember Jake Jill and Hollis.
Sweet little Homer from October sky.
That's right.
First remember him.
He has so changed.
And I think he was perfect for this part.
We'll get an acting later.
But love the plot of this thing.
Because he did not know what to expect next to next next in.
It wasn't really predictable at all.
And see, I disagree with you there because of the trailer.
And one of the things I talk about in my review that's at www.theclubhousepodcast.com.
Which is our website.
I felt that the trailer for this thing gave everything away.
And I worry about that.
Well, the part of lost everything.
Yeah, they did do that in the trailer.
And that's a huge plot point that I don't think this should have given away in the trailer.
But even though that happened in the first probably 20 minutes of the film.
Right.
But whatever I see that much in the trailer, I worry going in.
And plus this is a boxing movie.
And I'm a huge boxing fan.
And I've seen some really bad boxing movies.
And I don't want to mention any name snake guys.
But are like rocking it.
Rocky 600.
And that was my other thing.
Was, is this going to be just a rocky rehash?
Because it's been, you know, the better part of 40 years.
Since Rocky.
Which chat has it to stay in for.
I beg your pardon.
I thought you were to stay in with because it beat out Star Wars.
No.
Because that was a year apart.
That's a problem.
That was your problem with Rocky.
Yeah.
Rocky was an any haul beat out Star.
And a haul.
Rocky wasn't 76.
Right.
It's almost.
But for me, the story ended up keeping me engaged.
You know, this thing runs a solid two hours.
It's two hours and three minutes long.
And it didn't seem like that.
It really didn't.
I was very, very engaged during the entire film.
Part of that ties into the performances, which we'll talk about here in a minute.
But then again, you've also got Antoine Fuqua, who knows how to direct a film.
Let's be honest.
And Otto who read it.
Who wrote it.
And he was able to take Kurt Sutter's pages and really bring them to life.
I was worried that this film was going to kind of mail it in, giving what it was.
But it didn't.
It really, it looked amazing.
Antoine Fuqua puts that gritty field to everything that he also did.
You know, he did the equalizer.
But then tell Washington.
Yeah.
It's visually stunning.
A great story.
Even though you kind of know how this thing's going to wind up.
Yeah.
On the general.
You're enjoying the ride.
Which you can't say a lot about stories that have been told over and over again.
They really enjoyed the ride here.
Question.
The big gauge.
How many times did you look at your watch?
First time I looked at my watch, we were 50 minutes in.
That's as a lot.
And there's a lot of story told in the last 30 minutes that could have been really, really rushed.
Which is what I don't think I was worried about.
But they paste it so well that you didn't really worry about it.
Like the big, the final fight at the end.
I would have appreciated some more time just because I'm a boxing fan.
And let me just say something about the fight choreography here.
Amazing.
Yeah.
There were times where I found myself going, oh, E like my brain at some point was like,
I thought it was watching a real boxing match.
That's how good the fight choreography in this is.
It shows him basically starting in the locker room then shows us the first fight.
The locker room really heavy into this.
Into that first fight.
I was left right in and there.
I was.
This is incredible.
I really like this.
And then what else do you say about Jake Jill and Hall?
As I said.
But yeah.
Dear God in heaven.
His last three films being enemy, night crawler, and this have absolutely melted my brain.
Did you ever see end of watch?
I have not, but I know that's one that you keep recommending to me.
But it started him in that trend of this is more, this film alone.
I cannot tell you how many times I lost Jake Jill and Hall in this film,
which is really as an actor what you want to do.
But there were times where I thought I was watching a documentary.
Like Jill and Hall is so all in in this.
He completely sells the character of Billy Hope,
where you're just like your heart doesn't go out to Jake Jill and Hall.
Your heart goes out to this character.
And Rachel McAdams, who is really trying really, really hard to make me have an unhealthy crush on her.
She knocks it out of the park, plays his wife beautifully.
Because as her character evolves, she's the wife that understands what he's doing,
but doesn't want her husband to wind up as the old boxer who can't talk anymore.
Like a Mohammed Ali, unfortunately, exactly.
And she's the one who looked over the business.
She was like, her business manager.
She was the one with the contracts and I also can't say enough about unalorance playing their daughter.
First of all, the casting here and Chad, I'm just going to tell you this up front.
When you see this kid in this, she could be Rachel McAdams daughter.
Oh really?
I wouldn't say she's a dead ringer for her, but there's enough, she favors her enough
that you could go, yeah, I can totally buy this.
And this kid is intense.
Rachel McAdams has such an intense beauty about her.
It's like looking at her as like looking at the sun, do long.
Una Lawrence, there's a scene in this where she's playing a board game with her father.
And she wants to come with him to a fight and he won't let her because he can't get her at that time.
And she just wigs out and starts slapping him.
Wow.
And I'm telling you.
Oh yeah.
Sold it.
Yeah.
She absolutely sold the anger.
And what would she say?
She's like 9 or 10 at the most.
Hold on.
Let me see if I can find her.
Trying to find out.
Give me a minute on that one.
I mean, she's got 18 credits starting.
She's going to be in the new version of Pete's Dragon.
Oh really?
Yep.

She's my shining starguest thing.
She was amazing.
She was amazing.
I besides Jumhami.
Jumhami.
He's starting in to, I think, personally into that level of Paul Jumhami, where it's like,
you know what you're starting to get with him now.
And he's, I mean, he's light years ahead of his sister.
And as much as I enjoy Maggie, he is a clipsed her from an acting standpoint.
He is absolutely crushing anything he puts his hands on.
And going into this as skeptical as I was, I walked out just like dropped the mic.
It's over.
This, this movie is amazing.
And the fact that they're releasing it in July versus the holiday season for the award
push kind of confounds me a little bit.
And that's one thing I kind of got to is like, why did, why did they release this early?
Because I'm, I'm saying this right now.
So I said it last year with Jumhami with the night crawler.
You're talking Oscar buzz on this guy.
They released this thing in November.
No, I agree with you.
But I also feel that this is a good summer movie.
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
It's, it's a great action packed film.
And there's someone for everybody in this.
Yeah.
You know, it's for the ladies to get Jake Jumhami all half naked.
So there's that full.
Yeah.
He's just, there's a great story to it that everybody can get into.
You want to root for the underdog.
You want the bad guy to lose.
There were a couple of threads I thought could have been tied up a little bit better.
But it didn't take away from my enjoyment of this film.
If, you know, we also, you know, we didn't really see much about him.
But his role in here.
Sorry about this.
Force Whitaker.
You know, and I'm glad you brought that up.
And go, I'll let you make your point.
Then I'll make mine.
Force Whitaker plays Titus Tuck Willis.
He, he played that role very, very well.
I thought easily.
I loved how the scene in the bar is all I'm going to say.
Where he's like, doesn't apply to me.
That's all I want to say about that.
But if you hit that perfect, the character perfectly, I thought.
For me, I am such a force Whitaker fan.
I have never, as long as I have walked this planet.
scene of film.
We're not only to somebody act toe to toe with force Whitaker, but out acts him.
And Jill and Hall does that here.
Like, there were a couple of points, right?
So I was like, you got to think of force, but you're saying they're going, what am I doing here?
Because Jill and you know I'm a big force, Whitaker fan.
You know what?
I love that man.
His arc on the shield was incredible.
But if you can have force by the way, I also had, I also had written.
Sutter also wrote some aspects of the shield, too.
Jill and Hall is just so good in this.
That he elevates everybody else, too.
That of Fiddy.
I thought Fiddy and Spy was better than he was here.
It's not like Fiddy was bad here.
He just wasn't as good as he was in Spy.
And some of the other things I've seen him in.
But Jill and Hall is just so far in a way.
Just light years ahead of everybody.
I think with Lawrence though, she grows up faster.
That kid's good.
She grows up faster than Jill and Hall does.
When you really think about it, when you look at it.
Yeah.
With events that happens, she's the kid and then boom.
She's the more grown up when you really look at some of those scenes in there.
I mean, even with a cursing, but it's like, yeah, she's getting there.
You know, I was so impressed with her on this one.
The acting.
Also, I want to give a little shout out to Naomi Harris on this, too.
Playing the social work.
Yeah.
She wasn't the big shining star in this, but she did great for the social worker.
And I think that interaction with her and Jill and Hall in Lawrence together.
They made a good combo in there, I thought.
They fed off each other.
I thought personally, I'm at this.
This was, yes, this was amazing.
I can't say enough good things about this.

I'm sold.
I definitely want to see it.
It is called South Paw.

I haven't seen this a lot lately, but they deserve it.
The coveted full price?
Yep, the coveted full price.
I can't debate you.
As low as my expectations were going into this thing,
they are a bazillion times higher.
Go see this movie.
Don't take the kids, but go see this film.
It is amazing.
We got to warn there's some violence in this thing, and all that.
So it's not good for the world yet.
It's an all this are for reason, but you know, with family and the language.
You have no language.
