My name is Rob and the executive producer of the clubhouse podcast and put your seat belts on kids because this one's going to be interesting.
Joining me across the desk as he tends to do is my co-host.
And a man who I'm not sure what he's about to get himself into but he's about to find out he is chat.
Welcome sir.
I've got my seat belt on and my crash helmet at the ready.
Whatever we do one of these things, it is to review something and this particular episode is no exception.
This go around this is a film that I'm the only one on our staff that has seen.
Don couldn't join us for this particular episode. He is previously engaged.
But the latest film directed by Kevin Reynolds does anything to you sir.
It does actually.
Is he not the man responsible for robbing a print of thieves?
Yes sir.
And water world.
So they were bounced there.
And the count of Monte Cristo in 2002.
So he's kind of a kind of a friend of the costner.
Did three episodes of the Adfields and McCoy's.
A good show.
Tristan and Isle Day.
He did 1-8-7 with Sam Jackson.
But that's not what we're here to talk about.
We're here to talk about his current work.
Known as risen.
Starring Joseph Fines as Clavicus.
Clavicus.
Yep.
Or Clavius.
Clavicus.
Yeah.
But to see.
See, named after your shoulder move.
I mean, I've been ill for like five.
I know, brother.
I know.
Reading is not my strongest.
But Clavius is a Roman tribute.
Who is tasked after the resurrection of Jesus to help Pontius Pilate prove that it was not a resurrection that somebody stole the body.

I'm with you so far.
Okay.

So, I don't even know where to start with this.
I mean, Tom Felton is in this Peter Firth.
Clif Curtis.
Maria Botto, Louis Collejo.
I mean, it's, it's got a really good cast.
But it's always interesting to me to watch a biblically-based film.
Because let's, let's be honest.
Why, thank you, computer.
There are two different balls of wax when it comes to faith-based films and biblically-based films.
In my particular definition.
I define a faith-based film as people every day, like heaven is for real.
That's a faith-based film.
Like things we lost in the future.
God's not dead.
That's a faith-based film.
Left behind.
That's a faith-based film.
Because these are stories of people that are tied back to faith.
Right.
Biblically-based films to me aren't...
Exodus, Gods and Kings.
Um...
Son of God.
Stuff that's supposed to be taken from the Bible.
The passion of the Christ.
Yes.
Yes.
This is allegedly...
I guess you could call it a blend of both.
The only way I can define this film is almost famous meets the book of acts.
Could you explain that a little better?
Because...
Clavius...
Like...
He's all going, oh, like, yo, I'm a dude, whatever.
You know, I'm gonna do what it takes, so I'll get this done.
Well, he ends up getting hooked up with the disciples.
Who take him with them to go find the resurrected Jesus.
Okay.
So all of a sudden, he's just like, along for the ride.
After a series of events.
Because I don't want to give away too much of what happens because there are people that are going to see this movie.
Both of them.
Um...
Wow.
And...
There's people listening to this right now going, oh, come on, man.
This is another Bibbably-based film, and you're record with reviewing Bibbably-based films is not stellar.
You're right.
I'm not gonna deny that.
I like we've had a time to review.
Being a man who is in, oh, at least I can name you two right off the bat.
Oh, I'm just saying, you know, it's not like we've got, like, you know, a laundry list.
Being a guy who is in ministry.
Being a guy who has walked with the Jesus for over 30 years.
On a personal level, raised in the church.
Maybe I hold the bar too high for Hollywood when it comes to Bibbably-based films.
But...
If you're going to do it this way, do it this way.
Commit to the bit.
Mm-hmm.
You know, I agree with you.
One of my... I'm gonna give you the example of one of the things that really pushed me over the edge with this.
If you have asked, I've done people have asked me before.
What my favorite Bible story is.
And I don't even have to think about it.
My favorite story in the entire Bible is after the resurrection.
Peter is out fishing, because after Jesus dies,
the disciples didn't know what to do.
They just went back to their lives.
Simon Peter was a fisherman. That's what he did.
Okay.
So he went back to fishing.
And he's out on the boat one day.
Not catching anything.
And there's his voice, there's a man on the shores.
He's tossed the net on the inside of the boat.
He's like, but doing this all night, Homer.
This is not my first day.
Yeah, like whatever.
So he throws the net over.
That boat is almost capsized with a number of fishes he catches.
It is at this point he realizes that the man is talking to him is Jesus.
Come and come back from the dead.
Simon Peter jumps out of the boat and swims to shore.
Doesn't just roll with the boat. He jumps out of the boat.
And then it's just him and Jesus talking.
And there's what happens there.
Jesus has a very personal moment with Simon Peter as they're eating breakfast together by the fire.
That Jesus has created for them.
There is a redemption to that particular story
that you have to understand everything that led up to that to understand why that redemption happens.
Right?
In the film, they're all 12 together just hanging out fishing with clavius.
You know, we're not sure what's going on.
We just figured Jesus told us to come here.
Oh, look at Jesus on the shore.
We should go have breakfast.
And this is where the gnashing of teeth begins.
I am watching this film with friend of the show Lonnie Hart.
One of my closest friends in the whole world who is also very,
that's a deep theology to him.
Right?
And I leaned over to him as they were on the boat.
And I said, I swear to you.
If they're fixing to do what they're, but I think they're fixing to do.
I'm going to get real mad.
And he just looked at me as like, prepare to get mad because I think I'm right there with you.
Oh, no.
I don't care that you feel you have to do something for entertainment value.
This particular scene, you didn't need that.
And then while we're having breakfast, oh, here's an outcast of the village that we're all hanging out at.
Jesus is going to go healing.
He's the Jesus.
We know what he does.
You know, this, this, this smacks of, and I think we made a similar comment when we were talking about X of this,
where if you're, if you're going to, if you're going to, if you're going to adapt a, a, a story from another work,
whatever that work is,
the least you can do is stay true to the source.
Exactly.
Or call it anything else.
Yes.
If you're not going to maintain the integrity of what that story is, then don't call it that.
Yeah.
I'm, I'm just, like, forest gump kept more historic accuracy.
Wow.
And there were sounds right.
Thought this was very forest gumpy because clavius is just there.
Well, all this is happening around him.
He's just kind of there.
Hey, what's up?
I'm clavius.
Look at me.
I look kind of like my brother, but my brother looks a little older.
And he gets to do James Bond movies and I get to do this.
If I had to look at it from a purely entertainment value, if you had changed the name
that protect the innocent, I probably would have enjoyed this more.
But, and I also understand the argument of, well, what if it's just like a thing where
people get interested and they want to seek out more?
I give you certain validity to that, right?
But what I don't give validity of, you're sucking people in under false presences.
Because they're going to look at that Bible story and they're going to go, it's not put the movie
did.
Yeah.
That's totally not what the movie did.
Noah.
And that.
And I know that unfortunately that's what people are turning to rather than cliffs notes
as they're just going to film adaptations.
Which, you know, I guess the people have been doing that for a while anyway.
But they're doing that more and more than they're ever turning to a printed version.
They're going to something like this.
And they're going to take it if you're pardon my terminology as the gospel.
And it just frustrates me.
Like if they had put him in the story and they just told the story right,
maybe while he's looking for the body he runs into Simon Peter.
And he's there when that happens.
Like he's just sitting on the shore.
And he sees it from a distance.
Because there's a part where he is following that, but he's following them at a distance.
And he has a nice little exchange with Simon Peter.
So I did think that was one of the best moments in the film.
It's not all bad.
It has moments.
But moments do not constitute a good film.
Yeah.
And it just comes up as irresponsible storytelling.
Now visually, visually gorgeous.
Right now shoots this thing really, really well.
I mean, you'd have thought they were in the Hollywood.
I mean, it's gorgeously shot.
Any idea where it was shot?
Uh, I want to say Spain and Morocco.
Okay.
I want to say.
Because I know Morocco gets used a lot for locations shoots like that.
But it looks gorgeous.
I mean, I can't fault the visual style.
I can, I can fault Kevin Reynolds for being co-screen writer.
Oh, really.
Mm-hmm.
It's just.
I appreciate that I live in a time where the Bible is being used in mainstream things.
But not the revised slandered version of the Bible.
I prefer the revised standard version of the Bible myself or the new international version.
Because I can read those.
But when people get up there and they're like, wait a minute.
The movie said this.
Well, the movie's not right.
What then?
What the heck?
Roman Downey.
Oh, Mark Burnett.
I will say it was better than Exodus and it was better than some of God.
I can tell you that with an honest clear conscience.
But that's probably not saying much.
It just.
When I first saw the trailer, I was like, oh, there's some instability here.
I know there is.
And that was probably when I was God Lonnie was with me because it was, it was going to turn into one of those.
Is it just me?
Because he and I talked about this the whole way home.
And it was just one of those, man.
You could have done so much with this.
You had one job.
But I'll tell you the other big warning sign for me.
Hmm.
It's the release date on this film.
Maybe you were in 19th.
Uh-huh.
You couldn't wait six weeks to least her.
Yeah, that didn't make a lot of sense to me either.
I don't know if that was just because that was a huge red flag for me.
How was this not an Easter release and it deals with Easter?
Yeah.
It starts with it.
One of those things with their marketing to the wrong holiday because it's around,
they released it around Valentine's Day.
You know, and there were other things.
Like, it does start with the crucifixion.
And when he's lanced after he's allegedly dead and they're like, that's not the point of why
that happened.
According to a story I read, I, and maybe I'm wrong.
I could be.
But you tend to know you're still coming from to this though.
Like, just a little bit, why would you change that detail?
Like, what does that do for you?
You know, it just, I don't know.
They just don't seem to be concerned with the,
I wanted to film.
I wanted to like this film.
Even though I had reservations, I was like, somebody's going to get this right.
Somebody's going to crack the code.
And somebody's going to get this right.
Not today, my friend.
Not on this one.
Not today.
I mean, that's, I mean, it's really unfortunate because, you know,
I'd like to see, I'd like to see better films made.
Not, not just because it's a slippery slope that you're getting on.
Because either you stay true to, I mean, absolutely 100% true to the word,
and it becomes a little less entertaining and it becomes more
for lack of a better word, preachy.
And it may not enter, it may not appeal to a mass audience.
They're just going to kind of do it out.
And they're going to switch off.
Because what are you else going to do now?
The pacing and hour 47 feels like dances with wolves.
It is so slow.
Yeah, but I love dances with wolves.
I'm talking, I'm talking from a link standpoint.
Okay.
Because I mean, because I get, I look too lonely.
And I was like, is this just crawling for you?
He's like, yeah, it's really slow.
And I don't know.
I'm just frustrated with this thing.
And I almost feels like it's one of those things that they're really not ever going to get right.
Because somebody's going to get it right.
Somebody's going to crack the code.
And I'm still hopeful for that.
But today is not that day.
Well, I mean, I think the, the closest that anybody's come
and they did a pretty good job would be the passion.
Because that pleased everybody.
It pleased the masses and it, and it pleased the church.
Everybody won on that one.
I had a couple of small issues with it.
Well, you're going to, I think no matter where you look,
you're going to find from the way he told the story.
The liberties he took, he kind of had to from a time standpoint.
But it's been the most effective cinematic venture that they've taken from the Bible in recent memory.
If you can take your theology hat off, go enjoy this film.
Which then leads us into the final analysis.
And the way the final analysis works on this show.
We're not going to give you a thumbs up thumbs down.
I'm not going to give you letter grades numbers.
Anything like that.
There's two questions.
Question number one.
What I see this again?
If I tell you know, then we're done here.
But if I tell you, yes.
I'm going to tell you how far I'm going to go.
I pay full price.
Well, I go to it's quite light.
We'll go to a matinee or we're going to saturday.
Second one of the dollar theater.
Netflix Red Box table cable.
I can't say I wouldn't see it again.
Because again, I liked it better than I liked some of God.
I liked it better than I liked Exodus Gods and Kings.
I liked it better than Noah.
And I haven't even seen Noah because I don't want to.
Because I don't believe Noah was a power Ranger story.
With rock creatures.
But I don't know how far out of my way I go.
Like if I was with somebody and they were like, hey man, I want to see this movie.
I wouldn't go, oh, you know what?
Look at the time.
I got a tomorrow.
You know.
But if it were on cable.
And you were just kind of passing by.
Which is like, maybe there's something about this.
I just didn't catch the first time.
If it were on cable and I was with somebody,
I said, hey, I like to check that out.
Then I wouldn't object.
But again, I wouldn't go out of my way.
To me, it seems like it would be one of those types of films of.
I was really hard on this when I saw it the first time.
And maybe it's just I didn't appreciate it when I was sitting there
because I was expecting something else.
Very possible.
Yeah, I will say that that is not outside the realm of possibility.
Like I'd be willing to give it a fair shake just because.
I was like, you know, maybe if on the second viewing,
maybe I'll get something out of it that I didn't get the first time.
And I do want to say thank you to our friends at L.I.

And we are just glad that they let us.
