My name is Rob, I am the executive producer of the Clubhouse podcast and I'm feeling
you and you don't like it.
Some of you will get that in some of you won't and that's okay.
But I'm not alone for this particular episode joining me across the desk as he does
every once and again as the official fact checker of the show and a man that'll pull a
rabbit out of a hat professional if you need him too because he's that dog on good.
You may know I'm his fun, doggo, but his mom and even don't bored I'm going to call him
Don Ford welcome sir.
I had rabbit once for dinner.
Today's like chicken.
Yeah.
Whenever we do one of these bad boys it is to review something this is no exception.
We are here today to review for you.
The brand new film from director John M. Chu, a man whose resume when we tell you what we're
about to review you might go.
Really?
Now, don't have you checked this man's resume.
I'm looking at it right now.
Both Justin Bieber films.
Okay.
Step up to step up 3D GI Joe retaliation.
He has been given the reins to the surprisingly successful film from a few years ago called
now you see me.
So of course we're reviewing now you see me too.
Before we start this whole thing, yes sir.
We have to think our good friend, slifox, july everybody at slifox from fightness to this
thing.
I think the fact that I have the the reason to use slifox to the sentence now so I'm just
happy with that.
We're big fans of those guys.
Yes they are.
They work and make it let us see this a little early so we can review it for you.
If you remember now you see me now, I'm going to say right now because I say this in my
written review which is located at www.theclubhousepodcast.com which is our website.
You have to understand that this being a sequel.
When I talk about the first film, I'm going to get kind of spoilery on you.
Yeah.
If you haven't seen it by now too late, there are certain aspects to this film that you
have to know about that film.
So there's just group of magicians that are known as the horsemen.
Of course there are four of them but they just called them the horsemen.
Woo!
I have to do that.
I just think it out there.
You have Atlas played by Jesse Eisenberg.
You have Merit played by Woody Harrelson.
You have Jack Woller played by Dave Franco.
Now in the first film you had Isle Fisher.
She is not in this one because she was pregnant at the time.
So there wasn't like a dispute or anything.
She was pregnant couldn't do the film.
Yeah.
Borat Jr's coming on the way.
So filling in for her in this film is one of the stars of Hot Tub Time Machine.
You also might remember her currently on Showtime Masters of Sex.
She is known as Lizzie Kaplan.
At the end of the last film, the horsemen do their group of the four of the best
magicians in the world and they are using their powers for good kind of an Robinhood
kind of a way.
Exactly.
So due to some of their activities, they have had to kind of go underground for a while.
Yes, they have kind of wanted by the government for maybe Robin of Bang.
No, not government governments.
Yeah, that is for men.
So what we find out, Mark Ruffalo's character, Dylan Rhodes, is actually kind of a
double agent because he works with them but he works for the FBI but he kind of makes
it look like he is kind of pursuing him but kind of not to kind of do what he has to
do.
So there's a big software company that's having this big announcement and they kind of infiltrate
the press release to try to liberate some people and educate some people on some things
about this company.
But in doing so, their hack gets hacked and what pursues from this voice airs all their
dirty laundry.
So everybody knows who everybody is including Jack Wilder who is Dave Franco's character
who maybe people he doesn't want to know that he's alive.
Yes.
So I don't really want to go too much deeper into that but they end up, they wind up doing
doing work for Walter played by Daniel Radcliffe Harry Potter, who wants them to steal
a computer chip for him and if they do this, he'll clear their names.
Well, of course during this whole thing, you have Thaddeus Bradley paid by Morgan Freeman
vowing revenge for having him put in jail at the end of the first film.
Don't really want to go too much deeper into that because there's a lot of twists
and turns that happen in this film and I kind of feel like if I tell you too much more it's
going to kind of take you out of it a little bit.
Let me say going into this, I am a huge fan of the first film.
Me too.
I didn't see it until it came on cable and I still kind of kick myself for it because
it's a really fun movie.
It's not, you know, you're not going to have huge revelations about the world from
this film.
This from either one of these films.
These films are fun popcorn summer type movies.
There's going to be, I'm sure there's a lot of people in the magic community that
poo poo on films like this because they rely on some CGI work because some of the tricks
that they do get, it's not possible to do physically but David Copperfield was a producer
on this film.
I saw that at the end of credits.
Honestly, and this really surprised me because when we looked going into the theater
for this, this film was two hours and six minutes long.
Yep.
This movie sailed for me.
What do we always judge on how, how the watch?
The first time I looked at my watch, we were almost halfway done.
No way.
I'm not kidding you.
When it was the last time, it was an hour.
It's been a while.
Yeah, I can't remember.
This movie moves quickly.
I'm not too fast.
I thought the pacing was perfect.
There was never a point in the movie where I was kind of like, okay, we've hit kind
of a dull spot here.
I probably had five minutes, probably about the hour 15 hour, four hour, 30 minutes into
this.
But not bad, not bad.
Right.
I mean, it was one of those, I didn't get real distracted by anything.
I wasn't kind of like, okay, you could have cut this out, like it kept me, and the
reason to kept my attention, because it kept me trying to figure out what was going
to happen next, which I, it's not real predictable, which I really like, because movies
like this can get very, the, the highest, con type thing can get kind of predictable after
the many, many years that you and I have both spent on this planet.
This movie kind of takes it to a different level, and I really, really dug that about
it.
Well, you're talking about the ending.
This is going to be spoiler free, of course.
Well, just a lot of the, a lot of the things that they do.
Yes, but it's kind of like in the first part where you kind of get the, they show you
what happens at the end.
They give the big reveal.
Right.
They go back into, and I, which I put in my written view at www dot the clubhouse, podcast.com.
That is our website.
It's kind of like, in a way, the saw movies.
If you remember saw site, I can't compare those, because I've never watched a saw movie,
but there's always that, there's always that five minute thing at the end where it looks
back, you're like, oh, the big kind of reveal how everything comes to in, they kind
of do the same thing in the first one and the second one.
You get the kind of how everything worked out, because there's a point.
Let's just say the airplane scene.
I knew that there was something there.
Oh, and we're going to leave it as soon as you know the horsemen always have a plan.
And when it's also put in my written view again, one of the best scenes I loved was the
card in the chip in the last one to get to that go ahead, one of the, when they actually
go to steal the chip from the factory, they do a lot of training together, because one
of Dave Franco's thing is that he works a lot with cards.
That's kind of his bit.
Yeah.
Well, he's also learning hypnosis from Woody Harrupton, or Hillsborough's character.
That was his deal.
Right.
So he trains them on how to throw cards, and this chip just happens to be the size
of a playing card.
So the whole sequence of them trying to steal this chip, but as the cards being thrown
between them and their chip, and they're moving them as they're getting, because they're
being first by security over and over, and they keep on fighting.
I mean, that's see.
There is a level of suspension of disbelief to it, but it's so much fun.
You don't care.
You know what I mean, like, those, those throws were just a little too accurate, you know,
for them to train that like, but again, I didn't care.
Like, I really thought that was kind of a cool thing about it, because there was some
slide of hand in there.
There are some traditions that are that we remember the illusionists, which we saw, they
have a slide of hand where they could do something that you cannot imagine.
It was just so well shot and so well done that I was just like, okay, I can't deny
that was kind of cool.
You know, and I thought Lizzie Kaplan, what I really liked about what she did here, her
character, it's not the same character, I love Fisher played, which is nice, but she
wasn't trying to fit into the role that I love Fisher had in the first one.
She kind of made it her own, which she really had to do amongst these other three, and
all four of them, I thought had a five of you include Ruffalo, I thought all five of them
had really, really good chemistry.
No, who's been like better, Kaplan or, uh, six of one happened, doesn't it?
What would he, who would you like to see in the next one if they have a choice between
the two of them?
Both of them.
I think it's only one.
But I think if you're going to do the story like they've been doing the story, if
they bring her back in, have that dynamic between the two.
But because Lizzie kind of earns her spot on the team, she does, but what happens when
I let comes back?
Yeah.
And I think that would be a really cool way to do, because the third one's been green
with, the third one's already a year ago.
Oh, I'm in.
So the third one's going to happen, I believe in 2018.
I'm around there.
So in the future, absolutely.
But I just, I love what they do with these films, because it knows what it is, and that's
all that it ever has to be.
Does that make sense?
Yes.
Like, it knows, like, I know that this is what I'm expecting to go into this movie.
I'm not expecting Shakespeare.
I'm here to have take a couple of hours of my life and have a good time.
And that's what I did.
I just enjoyed this film for two hours.
No, you know, there's always that to write a curse.
So when they start making too many like Rocky 26 and Friday the 13th part 285.
Indeed, indeed.
You know, and somebody just gets so pathetic.
But even the second installment in a series, if you don't do it right, can shoot the
wheels off of something.
Yeah.
And I felt like this film really can stand on its own.
Yeah.
Because they explain enough about the first one that if you didn't see the first one, it's
not the beginning.
Like, I gave a quick recap where if you never saw the first one or at the beginning,
it says, here's what kind of happened.
It's kind of like, you know, you watch a new series and you first, you missed the first
episode.
But you, you're able to see the second.
It gives a recap of what happened.
It can't do you a pretty well, I think.
I thought, like I said, that's why I think this film couldn't even stand on its
own on its own for people to go, well, I didn't see the first one.
You don't necessarily have to see the first one.
It helps.
But you, you're, you're not lost if you just go and see it.
And I'll say compliment in, because we are getting the acting a little bit.
Radcliffe at first, you know, that's Harry Potter.
Because I see them all.
I know you haven't seen any of them.
Is that correct?
I know who he is.
But you never seen any of the seven movies, right?
I've seen commercials and trailers.
I've never actually sat, I've seen all seven.
So you can't get that mindset of he is he, you know, cast set is Harry Potter.
But after the first couple minutes, I didn't, the Harry Potter went out to window
in my mind.
Which was a credit to him.
Absolutely.
I thought he did.
I thought he was to see him play the kind of role he's in here.
You can see he's having fun with it, which I really, which I really, which I really, really
dug.
And I liked his, especially his interactions with Eisenberg and Harrelson.
I thought we're really great.
There's a great fight scene in this that takes place in a marketplace with, or
Ruffalo.
I love, I thought it was amazing.
Yeah, you didn't expect that from me.
No, absolutely.
But I have so much fun.
I find thinking of a shout out.
And this is also the guy that directed a different version of Ruffalo, because he
directed the incredible Hulk film that Ed Norton did.
So it's, it all works around and it all comes back to my thing is Harrelson, because
he played basically.
Well, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't,
but he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's, he's,
he's about Woody Harrelson.
You're always going to get Woody Harrelson and there's nothing wrong with it.
That's a good thing.
But the stew twist with him, I think, I think, I thought it was amazing.
Uh, I like that he, he, he brings kind of, as much as I was,
where is this going to say?
He kind of brings a ground to it, where he's the one that's kind of like,
guys, let's take a step back, take a minute.
And it's, and I like how, in some cases, like when they meet,
they're in your right clip for the first time.
They don't keep you guessing on how that all happened.
They just, this, this is, this is what got you here.
Yeah, instead of waiting till the end of the try to explain everything,
the only thing they explain at the end is the end, you know,
and it's really just, it's so well done and it's so much fun.
But being a spoiler free with Harrelson, I love the twist they put on.
Oh, I, I, I, I, I don't care, I, I don't care, I don't care because it,
it gives you a real black and white union, yeah, that you don't expect
because you think of Woody, but when this new thing happens,
the, the original, the, the Woody that you know is like,
man, he is kind of stable now compared.
Yeah, we've been at that, you know.
And it's, yeah, it's just, I, I don't know that I have any criticisms
of this film negatively.
I just, I loved this movie.
And in, in a, in a summer where we're being just bombarded
with superhero movies and stuff that's supposed to make us have feels
and just constant in your face, in your face, in your face,
this was a nice change of pace.
I could, you leave your brain at the door for two hours
and go have fun watching this movie.
And there's nothing really horrible about this movie.
I mean, teenagers, of course, and up easily.
Now, of course, the kids, they're kind of, they're not like the magic,
but they're not going to fall the plot.
I mean, there's no way on that.
I mean, it has a PG-13 on it.
Yeah.
And I think it's because there's a couple of words thrown in there.
But I mean, still, it's, yeah, the family.
Right, I mean, I wouldn't, I wouldn't let that keep me from taking a middle school.
Would you take your, for instance, your, how old your niece or whatever, uh,
which one?
Because I have so many.
Well, like, you, you have a teenage niece?
Yeah, but she's 15.
We, you had no problem taking her to this crowd.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Yeah, I'm totally, I'm just, I loved this movie.
And I can't say that I liked it more than the first one,
but I can definitely say I liked it as much as I liked it.
Yeah, I liked the first one more, uh, this one came in a very close second.
But it does make you look forward to the third one.
Yeah, it does.
Of course, now you just told me there's going to be, if I want, I'm happy.
But I, I, I wouldn't say it beats the first one, um, but still good.
Just some great, great fun stuff.
It's so much fun.
Shall we get to the final analysis?
Let's do it.
The way we do the final analysis on the show.
We're not going to give you thumbs up thumbs down.
We're not going to give you letter grades, numbers, stars, whatever.
Our audience whom we affectionately refer to as the empire.
They want us to dig deeper.
So we're going to do that.
Two questions up to that number.
Question one is, would we see this film again?
If the answer's no, then we're done here.
If the answer's yes, then we're going to ask the secondary question.
How far are you going to go to see it?
Will you pay full price?
Will you go to a matinee or maybe a twilight show?
Maybe early morning on a weekend.
Maybe you wait for it in the second one of the dollar theater.
Maybe you adventure away from your house to a red block.
Red blocks, but I don't know about that.
A red box, maybe you stream it on Netflix.
Maybe you wait for it on cable.
Do you see this again?
That's a definite.
How far are you willing to go to do so?
It did drink for about five minutes.
Timons for me, I thought a little bit, but not bad.
And it's not as good as the first, but it's a very good runner-up.
Beyond belief, it's a great sequel.
I have no problem with this as a sequel at the end of the flop.
I'm going to give it the twilight.
Take the, you know, family night out.
Enjoy it.
You know, I would definitely see this again.
You probably have figured it out that out by the way that I'm talking about it.
I'm willing to say pay full price.
This movie is just a lot of fun, especially now that summers here.
And I just really, really, really enjoyed this film.
And I can't say enough how much I enjoy this film.
I love the look of China and that too.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, there's some great scenes.
Some great scenes of a huge show.
Hopefully shot.
Yeah.
