able to build up the New Year.
She will not hold the bed.
Greetings, Empire member and our members.
If you are hearing the sound of my voice, it means the following conditions have been met.
At least once in your life, you have listened to the Clubhouse podcast.
Your one-stop shop for all thing sports and entertainment, live every Sunday, night at
7 Eastern for Pacific, but it also means you subscribe on iTunes, because it's time for
another year.
The 190 fifth one of these, ever closer to another hundred, but I am not alone for this particular
episode.
What ever we do one of these, it is to review something this particular edition
is no exception.
We are here today to review for you, the brand new film from Enigmatic Director, Terrence
Mallick.
It is called Night of Cups.
For we start this whole thing, we have to think Ashley and our best friends now, like
ally integrated marketing, look at us up on this.
Thanks for the invite guys, such good people that we love them.
So how does one explain a film that has no explanation?
I mean, let's not get it twisted.
We are about to try to review a Terrence Mallick film.
Tree of Life, thin red line, which I'm a fan of.
George Lucas when he accepted his AFI Film Award said he has probably the most celebrated
director with the smallest body of work outside of Terrence Mallick.
This is strange dude.
We actually were talking to some of our friends in the press core.
One of them had read an article where he had done an interview and at the end of the
interview, he just had the interview or drop him off out of the street corner and then
he was just gone.
And when I say there is no script, I don't mean it like it was like not a good script.
I mean there is no script to this film.
We have Christian Bale, Batman, who plays Rick and Rick, who doesn't have much to say.
We believe is a Hollywood screenwriter.
We think we're pretty sure.
We can say with a 95% surety because that's what IMDB tells us because we never really
know for sure in the film.
Who actually says about 9 words on screen the entire film, everything else is done
in voice over.
Why?
Because this entire film is in propped.
And not in like a who's lying anyway, is it kind of what?
Who's lying is it anyway?
I mean everybody and their brothers in this thing.
I'm just gonna run it for you.
Kate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Brian Denney, Antonio Bandaris, free to pin to West
Bentley, Theresa Palmer, who this is the third film I've seen her in the last month.
She was in the choice, she was in triple nine.
And now she's in this, image and poots is in this thing, Cherry Jones, Coconut Creek
High School alumnus, Joel LaTruleo, Fabio is in this thing.
Yes, that Fabio, like I'm not exaggerating this.
Fabio is in this.
Playing Fabio.
I can't believe it's not somebody else besides Fabio.
Because seriously, you could feel those shoes.
I guess the only way I can do this is just read the IMDB description.
A writer indulging in all that Los Angeles and Los Vegas has to offer undertakes a search
for love and self via a series of adventures with six different women.
Night of Cups the title comes from a tarot card.
Which even that is like a fleeting reference in the film.
Because it's not like we get to see the tarot reading.
We get to see the lady with the cards.
And then there's this other chick in the other room with a psychic place who's doing some
kind of a tai chi voodoo thing.
It looks like she's directing traffic to ghosts walking through the room and force throwing
everything.
Yeah.
She hates kind of a run.
Do you want to go to this?
You got a guy from Hollywood who likes to date and takes a trip to Vegas and loves to
beach.
And the desert.
Scene.
That's it.
Print.
I.
This was such a weird thing for me because going into it, I mean, if you know about film,
you know that Malik is not normal.
And I really wanted to see it through eyes that could make me understand it.
I like to think I'm not as simple to that I know more than the average bear.
But this film left me confused.
Like it was like he filmed like a hundred different Calvin Klein commercials and he cut
them all together and if they fit great and it's like it's like watching a home movie
your grandparents filmed when you were four and it just cuts to stuff and there doesn't
have to make sense because it's your family home movies.
But in a film, it should make sense.
You remember that that bread pit Chanel number five commercial that they made and
started out live just completely.
Oh, absolutely.
That's that's what you feel like you're getting pranked the whole time you're
watching.
And you know, and on the sunset, I'm also waiting for just some to cut to McConaughey
driving around.
I'm a day you up my account for me to have a shirt off, you know, I'm driving cattle
I can be all good.
That is good.
It doesn't take sense.
But I still don't know.
I can hear you.
Yeah, I want to take the shirt off.
So I'm going to be like, I've, we've now, it's now been 48 hours since we've screened
this from the time we've screened this until the time we're recording this and I still can't
make heads or tails of it.
Sections of it are gorgeous.
Some of the stuff he shoots beautiful beautiful.
But then some of it, you're just like, dude, you're making my head hurt.
And those beautiful shots have nothing whatsoever to do with the narrative if there
is truly a narrative here.
You know, it's, it is the, what, the best way that I could sum it up is if any of you
are familiar with Jackson Pollock's paintings.
Yeah.
We talked about this driving.
We talked about the car that, to me, it's just Jackson Pollock's thoughts
spewed onto a canvas with a copious amount of paint.
It's got no form.
It's all just a discombobulated mess.
And there's going to be, I guarantee there's going to be people out there that this
film will speak to.
And not in an ironic way.
Not somebody that's going to go, I loved it.
And then throw like $19, $5 collegewards into a sentence to make you think they're smarter
than they actually are.
But there's going to be people that this film is going to speak to, because the guys had
a career.
But by the same token, Ingmar Bergman and Francois, who faux had career.
And I consider myself a student of film to a certain extent, and I don't get it.
If you go to my written review at www.theclubospaucas.com, that is our website.
I put on this.
And I'm serious on this.
This could have been a 10 minute short.
And you know what, Don, Don carries a valid point there, but it's two hours.
When I told you said earlier about the plot, that's the plot.
That's what I got out of it.
Yeah.
I mean, it could be a 10, 5, 10 minute short.
And there's so much voice over.
Oh, it is useless talking.
You're like, when we've done the first five minutes of the film with Ben Kingsley reading
from Pilgrim's progress.
And it has, once again, not to do, would not.
Well, you can kind of find a little bit of it because it talks about a king and his
son, the prince, and you have Christian Bale's character, who has a brother, and they
both, their father is played by Brian Denny, and we think we think their mother is played
by Cherry Jones.
So I'm a huge fan of.
But she played the president on the 24th.
Yeah, if you remember.
Yeah, of course.
So you're just going, ooh, symbolism.
I mean, I really wanted to get this film.
But I couldn't.
After five minutes, I was last trying to, it's just like a bunch of jabbers talking on
the voice.
And it made no point.
And I can't even speak to performance because there is none.
There wasn't it.
It was just a bunch of people walking around going, hey, did it's going on?
I mean, Bill had what, four lines in the whole film.
Something like that.
Well, I think he only spoke about nine words on screen.
The rest of it was done in voice over.
Yeah, but I'm talking about on screen.
It's probably about four different lines throughout the whole film.
At four sentences.
Yeah.
I want to write two letters.
Okay.
Did you talk to Santa Claus?
I mean, you had no idea what that line was.
Who was directed to?
I mean, you could go sit down in the park and sit there for an hour and just watch people
and you'll get more and I'll have that and watch them say I haven't done that.
Yeah, you could, you could plan four or five GoPro video.
Cameras in a public park, which we think he did it.
Which we think he did and link them to your laptop and just edit it together with some
with some Adobe editing tools and you could go off movie makers.
And you could be Terrence Ma, I mean, I, I, I don't want to think.
The kind of like you, like you said, I'm going to echo your sentiment, Rob.
But I like to consider myself somewhat of a student of film because we've been doing this
for a while.
Even long before we had a podcast, we were doing this.
And you know, I was reviewing, I've been reviewing movies on and off for over two
decade.
I mean, I don't just get into popcorn films and, you know, and action, shoot them
up.
So we get into more cerebral fair and I love a good documentary as much as anybody.
But this, I can't even call this a character study because there was, there were no characters
to study.
We didn't know who was who.
I mean, again, you, you get, maybe, you get one or two names dropped.
And then everything else is just tied to a Terro card.
And when I look to the, when I look at the, the one sheet, it's like an upside down poster
from Birdman.
And I think that's supposed to be symbolic of the Terro card itself.
I think that's the signifying.
Oh, no, absolutely.
It's obvious that that's what the, the references to, but I got an absolutely nothing
out of this.
This is one of the most painful experiences I've ever sat through.
It was all I could do to stay seated.
It took every bit of effort I had to stay seated.
And I'm just like, this is going nowhere.
So yeah, I have too much respect for the empire as do I, as do I for the people at
allied in the studios to sit through this whole thing.
Yeah, it's the only reason I did it was a chore absolute chore to sit through this thing
because it just, it made absolutely, it wasn't coherent.
It, it was all over the map.
It was just all over the map in the California on location awards in 2012.
It won for a location team of the year.
What?
That's a good for shots.
I mean, the beach was nice.
Why don't you just, why don't you award the caterer while you're at it?
You know, image and poots won breakthrough performer at the Hampton's International Film Festival
in 2012, which shows you how long this film's been around.
She won the bed.
He had Brandon.
He, when did he pass away?
She, she, she, she, she, she, she, she, she still, with us all the best way.
I'm, I mean, let me double check.
She won the award for a family that's most proud of her at the Poots family reunion.
No, Brian Denney he is still with.
Okay, I'm my bad man.
Because birthday is a week after mine.
Okay.
But I can't say that's not a valid question because I had to ask myself that question
because we haven't seen Denney, he and you know, and a lot of stuff recently.
I mean, it was good to see him again.
Absolutely, because you know I'm a fan.
If I, uh, dude, the, the could you have, could you have picked a more palatable film
experience to, to show your face in again after a long time away?
I mean, I guess if you're an actor, yes, you want to show years, but he has like,
you're upcoming projects right now.
And you want to show range.
And one way to do that is to do a film that's completely improvised because I've seen
a few of them in my lifetime.
Blair, which comes to mind.
But at least Blair, which there was a linear story.
Yeah.
And it was something you could follow.
This was more just like a series of one act play.
It was counting something was more interesting than this film.
I'm not just, yeah, yeah, we'll distance from that.
But yeah.
There were certain scenes that just kind of showed up and you went, oh, that was a thing.
Price a T in China?
Was I supposed to take something from that?
Or, I mean, I know that an, an art for art sake appeals to some people.
It just doesn't appeal to me.
I can't get into it.
For me, this, it's almost like this would have been better served like just showing
in an art gallery with no sound.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
I may be subtitled, so if you're not going to play the sound, just subtitle it.
It felt like something that would just be playing on a video wall in an art gallery.
Which was a scene in there.
Where was this?
Yeah, it was.
And this felt like it was meant for that.
It's like coming soon on this wall to the night of cups.
It was, it was just weird.
I mean, I've seen, I've seen Andy Warhol films.
I don't know if you've ever said, and they're a pretty trippy experience.
But again, at least I felt like we were headed somewhere.
And we got there.
Now, well, I will say this, and I said this after we saw it, better than the Claude's
of Cills, Maria.
Not much.
I'll never saw that one.
I can't imagine a film being more difficult to digest than this one, because this was
something that I just wanted to push aside on my plate and said, I'll just give that to
the wall.
But it's also like, you didn't feel you had to digest it.
By the time we got to the car, I was like moving on.
Well, that was a thing.
I like to think that at the end of the night, when we've sat through a 90 minute or
hour long of production, it is that we sit through.
I'm not saying this specifically.
This is an hour 58.
It's just in general that I got something from it, that I feel like I gained something.
I gained nothing from this.
If TNA started doing movies in their own studios, Donna and his anti-tool, anti-tool
non-stop action.
Wrestling bias.
It's like getting a gigantic bowl full of parsley, you know?
Yeah, it leaves that bitter aftertaste in your mouth.
You feel completely unfulfilled.
I was wanting a steak.
Well, no, you get a bowl of parsley and you'll like it.
No, that's so much.
No, I won't.
Do we need to do the final analysis on this show?
I'm not going to give you thumbs up, thumbs down, we're not going to give you stars, numbers,
whatever.
Our audience whom we affectionately refer to as the Empire, they look like us to go deeper
so we're going to do that.
My last two questions.
Maybe.
First questions, would you see this again?
The answer is no, then we're done here.
If the answer is yes, then I need to know how far of each gentleman are willing to go to
see this film.
Would you pay full price?
You could probably figure out the answer.
Twilight, Matt Nay, early morning on a weekend, second run at the dollar theater,
run it from red box, stream it from Netflix, wait for it on cable, Chad, because I'm
very in the lead here, because I know I know the answer to the other one.
Would you see this film again?
No, all right, I am going to agree with you on that.
Is obviously I'm not the target audience?
No.
I don't know who is.
And I'm kind of okay with that.
Done.
This one's going to be a little different.
This is going to be real different, because I know where this is going on.
Would you see this film again?
Yes.
Chad, Chad, wait for it.
And I'm going to recommend it, that's just like an animal house.
Let him go.
He's rolling.
How's far you willing to go, Don?
Here's the deal.
Sometimes I have trouble getting a sleep so I just have to be honest.
Beyond, I swear to God, and I'm being honest, I am going to DVR of this film when
he gets on cable.
And whenever I need to fall asleep at night, I'm going to put that push play, and I
will be out in five minutes, and I'm going to recommend this to one group of people
only.
If you have been Somnia, turn this film on, you will be cured.
You know what?
I'm changing my answer.
See, I can't change my answer because I can't fall asleep with the TV on, because
I had this thing.
It held there if there's a music playing or if the TV's on, the audio gets into my dreams.
And I really don't mean, I need it, but yeah, if you haven't, it's Somnia, I don't
want the audio for this.
If you haven't, it's Somnia, rent this film, put it in the TV, boom, you will be out
like a like you are cured right there with you.
Now, and I'll hold on, this is going to make my top 10 worst of the year.
Oh, we get it.
Well, it's my running for it, and it's a great running for my golden turkey.
And with all due respect, we do love our friends at Ally and it's very remarkable.
And one of the things that we respect the most about them is that they ask for our honest opinion.
I'm being honest.
And giving us that freedom and that liberty, we cannot thank them enough.
Oh, yeah.
Absolutely did a great job.
Yeah, totally.
You know, Scott was there.
We've talked to him for a bit as well.
We love Ally.
We love it.
It is called Night of Cups, directed by Terrence Malik and starring about half of Hollywood
right now.
But at time you hear this, it will be available for your edification, whether that's a good
thing or a bad thing.
That's where we're not here to judge you outwardly.
Yeah, we don't play Malik.
Let's do the plug.
