We are here today to review the much anticipated reboot of the reboot of the reboot.
A fantastic four.

I just lost the name of that movie Chad that he did.

Kind of a found footage film.
Which I enjoyed.
He's also a part of a four part interview currently on Kevin Smith's fat man on that man podcast.
I was in the first part today.
Kids got an interesting story.
I'm not going to lie to you.
Comes from some very very accomplished blood.
His father is an Oscar award winning documentarian.
So be aware of that.
By the way, it's a quasi centennial.

I mean, do we need to tell the story of the fantastic four?

Obviously, somebody thinks we need to.
We got to do it for the Empire.
I mean, we know that the Fox still has the rights for another seven years.
So lucky for that property.

And kind of got to see this in a bit more of an intimate setting than I thought.

It was a very good atmosphere to be in.
So Reed Richards is a dude.
He's really smart.
You just have to see this.

It's really hard for me to bury the lead here.
It really, really is.
Let's just, let's just start here.

As we're going for pairing to go into this screening,
which is, and this is something that I rarely do.
And Chad, you can back me up on this.
I rarely go to Rotten Tomatoes before we screen a film.
Because I'm afraid that if I do that,
it's going to jade me going into the film.
But when a film is a 23% on Rotten Tomatoes,
I'm a little worried.
It puts a plate.
And really, what have I said all along?
Every chair that's come out.
I'm reserving judgment.

And with this film specifically.
And reserving judgment.
We have it on tape.
I've got a good feeling.
I've got a feeling there's something we don't know.
Then I saw the running time.
It was not even an hour and 40 minutes.
And I was a little more concerned.
I mean, when was the last time we had a superhero work?
I wouldn't be that short.
Gosh.
Blade.
Maybe.
I think Blade at least reached an hour 50.
I'm just, I'm throwing a guess out there.
I really couldn't.
Now, let us all frame this around something.
Because I want us to all be clear.
Blade was two hours.
All of them were two hours.
Blade Trinity.
We'll get the one sheet for this film.
Yeah.
From the studio that brought you X and X a few surpassed.

You know, you've got Simon Kinberg as one of your screenwriters.
So going in, I was like, okay, this dude's got some skins on the wall.
And Blade 2 157.
There's got to be something that I'm missing here.
I mean, this is the guy that wrote X men days of each past.
We couldn't say from the screenwriter.
This is the guy that wrote Sherlock Holmes.
X 3, but we don't fault him for that.
Oh, obviously, maybe we should.
And it seemed like, and this is, I talk about this quite a bit in my written review,

Where it's like there was a meeting.
And somebody said, hey, let's take the formula we used for X men first class
and make them all real young and apply that here.
And there wasn't one person in the room that went, can we think this through a little bit?
Like, can we kind of take our time as long as we had this in development?
Because for those of you that don't understand how this works.
Before Disney bought Marvel.
Marvel was in dire straits.
Marvel was in trouble.
So what they were doing is they were farming their properties out,
mainly X men, Wolverine, Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man.
Where are the big ones?
Two other film companies.
And the deal written, I mean, it was an open end to deal.
Am I right on that chat?
I think so.
Whereas long as you have something in production or you're working on something,
every seven years you can keep the rights.
Which is really lame if you say me.
Well, but you got to understand.
When you're thirsty, you don't care what the liquid is.
If somebody offers you something, you drink it.
Yeah.
If you're in an ATM vestibule with Jill Goodaker.
And she offers you a piece of gun, you take it.
But unless that drink is hemlock, I don't know.

So it's one of those deals where it doesn't make a whole heck of a lot of sense.
But it is what it is.
You know what I mean?
Like, we're going to do this thing.
And we're going to keep the rights for another seven years.
And we're going to do something to get the bad taste of the last two fantastic four films
out of people's mouths.
Because don't get me started on the second one.
That's the whole different podcast in itself.
So I'm like, it's got to be better than those two.
It has to be.
Like, it can't be worse.
Oh, but wait.
And I still contend of those three films.
This is the best one.
Cheers.
But something that's an inch long is still better than something that's a half an inch long.
And I think better than a crawfish than a fish than a fish than a fish than a fish.
And I don't, I don't fault the performances because we're not even going to do the normal structure
because we just have to talk about this mill.
It's kind of how I did it.
Because you can't.

Because this is going to be more of a discussion that it's going to be of a review
because I think we all agree.
This is not a great film.

The normal superhero movie has that, like in the last fantastic four, show 10 minutes
and how they got their powers and the rest was this, you know, bang, bang, boo, boo.
Yo, shoot them up action, okay.
Mineless plotless action.
And that's a lot of those superhero movies, unfortunately.
This one.
This one really, really went into depth on the story and how they got started.
Now, did they overdo it?
Yes, they did.
But I did find it interesting that they put a lot into the beginning.
So this should have been like a pre thing.
Because I'm, okay.
I'm going to say it.
I don't care.
Empire.

They really, the fantastic four.
We're only in as the characters.
That's a superheroes run there for what the last third of the film.
Would you guess to me?
I know.
I think from a standpoint of them having the powers.
That's about half and half.
You happen half.
Okay.
But I didn't have a problem with it.
And I like how we really went into the depth.
But the problem is the action lacks.
You know, I don't need action overload, but I need more than, hey, you know,
can I have some pudding?
And it goes, here's a little teaspoon instead of giving me the whole cup.
You know, kind of thing.
But here's the thing.
As we're sitting through this film.
Now, I've got, for another show, Dave's got sitting next to him.
Yeah.
And I'm watching the story telling.
And again, I don't felt the performance.
Miles teller from whiplash.
I think does very well.
Michael B. Jordan.
Name of movie and throw a rock and you'll find one with him in it.
Is it he playing Creed coming up?
Yes.
Fruitval station.
You know.
Great.
Odd Liberty taking there.
But as the movie was going on,
the liberties they were taking with the original story
didn't tend to bother me as much as I thought they would.
Kate Mara, you know what you're getting there.
Kids in a town to family.
Not much.
Well, yeah.
She was in house a car.
It's didn't readable in that.
Jamie Bell has been grim.
You know, Tony Kebel has, as Dr. Doom.
I did think Rege Kathy, by the way.
Big fan.
Very unarrated actor.
Naming him Franklin Storm.
A little weird for me.
Yeah.
Because of those of you that follow the comics.
Once Reed and Sue get married and have a son, his name is Franklin.
And that's a whole comic angle that...
I don't think anybody has time to try to try to try to explain.
Yeah.
That's Franklin as he gets older in his powers form and all that good stuff.
But I'm watching.
I'm going.
I'm okay with 98% of this.
Like,
I could roll with you on there far more forgiving than I am.
Well, because I'm looking at it from a strictly storylines sample,
from a story telling standpoint.
The story they were telling didn't really bother me.
Now, I thought that to be opening the opening segment with Reed and the fifth grade.
That took a little longer than it should have.
Because I don't know that you really had to tell that much of that story to get to where we were.
No.
But I kind of saw where it was going.
I like the view of the Baxter building as kind of a private school.
I thought that was kind of a cool angle.
I did like how his science teacher in the very very beginning played by the great Dan castle in that.
Who you might know is the voice of Homer Simpson.
Asked if he was still trying to work on his flying car.
Nice touch.
Or shadowing.
Nice touch.
And I'm going,
Okay, I can roll with this because they're telling a good story.
The way they get the powers makes sense to me.
Like there's logic there.
And then I looked at my watch.
As they're now getting to the point where they're going back to what they're calling planet zero that we all know was the negative zone.
And Doom hasn't showed up yet.
And I look at my watch.
And we're at the hour 30 mark.
Yeah.
We're well into the third half.
Question.
How many times did you click your watch before that?
The first time I looked at my watch, we were actually at the 50 minute mark.
Okay.
Like again, I was totally in.
I was sold on the story.
Yeah.
And it was like they're writing and they're writing and they're writing and they're writing and they go.
Oh my god.
They have to fight.
So take five pages.
A lot of them fight.
And a page of script.
If you translate that, one page of a script is one minute of screen time.
It was like, first of all, for me, the geek boy in me, Doom's motivations completely off.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Now we do know that the way that they do doom and his story comes from the ultimate universe version of the Fantastic Four.
Which is where a lot of what Marvel's been pulling from here lately.
Which I don't have problems.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But I need it more.
Like you could have made this two hours and probably made the film 20 times better.
Uh-huh.
Because again, up till the point where we find Doom again, I'm like, you know what?
I'm okay with this.
I'm comfortable with this.
I'm enjoying what I'm seeing.
The way they did Ben Graham look amazing.
It's still need to put pants on him.
Let's be real.
You can go boot without the boot.
It's fine.
Gotta have the speed.
It's a little uncomfortable.
But the facial expressions looked great.
You know, it's the first time he's been done full CG too.
Right.
It's always been portrayed with somebody in prosthetics.
You know, read.
I'm okay with that.
It was kind of steam punky on a certain level.
Sue's powers.
I thought, well, it's cool.
There's still one piece of that that I didn't quite understand.
But I guess they were trying to grab it in reality, but it didn't really make sense to me.
I had a problem with the way Johnny turns the human torch on.
Uh-huh.
That was a little odd for me, but you know what?
At that point I'm kind of splitting hairs.
But there's all this build up.
And it's taking this longer to do this podcast than the climax and the resolution of the film.
And that's bad.
There should have been a fight scene leading up to the fight scene.
Well, when they were trying to track down was when they tried to track down one of the elusive members.
But that's not what that, but no, I mean, that was it.
I mean, other than other than the climax.
But even it even took longer to say this sentence and that scene was.
I mean, I mean, no, I'm agreeing with you. I'm saying we had a fight scene.
But yeah, it wasn't a fight scene.
No, it wasn't.
I quick update.
Ron Tomatoes is now a 10%
Oh.
Our reviews wasn't hit the whip quickly.
It's, and it's frustrating to me.
Because I can't say, I hate this movie.
This movie frustrates me.
And it's a whole different set of emotions here.
No, because it was, I was really enjoying myself.
I was like, I'm buying this.
I'm buying what you're selling me.
Oh, by the way.
Like, I, you, for the casual fan, you needed to see more doom.
And friend of the show Steven Zimmerman's going to see this and have a connection.
Because he is a huge doctor doom fan.
If you don't know nothing about this universe going into it.
If you know nothing about the fantastic for you will be completely lost.
Yeah, you'll know even less when you walk out.
I think it will not feel fulfilled at all.
The only character development was prepowers.
And you treated doom almost like a bumbling idiot at the end of this thing.
I'm like, this is Dr. Doom.
This is a guy that runs an entire country in the Marvel universe.
And does so with an iron fist and all of the subjects adore him.
He's a pimp.
This is a guy.
I mean, and I've always said, I like doom because in Doom's mind, he's not a villain.
Yeah, he's not doing anything wrong.
His whole bit is look.
Just let me run the world and everybody will be happy.
But if you get in my way of of of of what's best for you,
I'm going to have to kill you.
I will crush you.
He's, it's very much like how they portray Superman and injustice.
Mm-hmm.
And it's, when the credits rolled by the way, and we're not spoiling anything here,
just if you're one of those people, there's no extra scene in the credits.
And they even stole the ending of a difficult track.
Yeah, I noticed when you pointed that out of like, yeah, now that you put it that way,
they really did.
It just, it hurts.
Like it physically hurts me to talk about this film because I wanted to like it so much.
I wanted Fox to say to me, Rob, we're giving you what you deserve when it comes to the fantastic four.
Because it's not like the FF is hard to do.
No.
Well, apparently it is because they've taken three swings.
I didn't, they've struck out.
Now, this is three steps up to the plate, three swings, and you've missed all three times.
I'm going to spoil someone else that's on my written review,

I'm going to give Hollywood a free idea.
Give this to you.

Here's what you need to do.

Okay, so we got this comical property.
And we're going to make it into a movie.
Okay.
Screenwriter, write me a script.

I'm going to take it down the hall to this room where I've got a focus group.
Where I've got some geek boys, and I've got some non geek boys.
And I've got some geek girls, and I've got some non geek girls.
And I'm going to sit down and we're going to go through the script together.
And then you're going to tell me, is this palatable to a good, to a, to a, to a, to the right audience.
And if it isn't, we're going to keep tinkering with it until it, until it, until it is.
How can you do something like Xman first class, which is so good Fox?
And then you give me this.
And it's supposed to, according to them, it's supposed to exist in the same universe as the Xman
franchise.
And I get that, but problem is you're about 30 years different.
Yeah.
Now you are anyway, because when they're in fifth grade, that's 2007.
It doesn't even fill.
And with the upcoming Xman apocalypse taking place in the 80s, you're not going to have
a lot of crossover.
Right.
Yes.
Yeah.
You're killing me.
You're welcome in.
You know what?
But again, I don't fault the performances.
No, you can't.
And you've seen these people do much better.
Yes.
They've all done much better work.
But now, now, could I fault them and go have at some point, one of them had to have gone
really?
Somebody can, can we meet on that?
But we also don't know how married they were to the source material when they were
doing research on their characters.
Because well, a lot of cases they don't.
Kate didn't.
Kate wanted to, but they told her not to because this was a completely different story.
At that point as an actor, you go, okay, now I have more questions.
Yeah.
And you can tell because she really didn't develop a good relationship with anyone I thought.
I thought they played her as the genius that thinks boys are just not worth her time
a little too much.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You have to foster that relationship because they do get married.
You know, but it was, they're in just girl.
I can't.
I can't.
You know, young.
I mean, Reese, Reese offense.
Wasn't it, was it him that played fantastic or was it?
No.
You don't know.
You don't know.
I thought he was a better Mr. Fantastic.
I will say that.
More age appropriate anyway.
Um,
Because without the gray streaks in the side of the area,
I don't lose this something for me.
It just does.
Without that Jay Jonah James and haircut.
I like my Mr. Fantastic.
I like my old tower.
Again.
Yeah.
I'm going to strike against my my review of this film would be light years different
at this movie was 20 minutes longer.
If you had given me the doom show.
Because he shouldn't have been the way doom was brought back.
It's not the way it should have been done in my opinion.
Doom is doom.
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
I mean, this doom should have come back like a wrestler hitting a ring.
Like this is what's about to go down.
Get right with it.
And then the FF has to go.
Okay.
Well,
Really only people that can beat this.
And my fandom with with the Fantastic Four doesn't run very deep
because I've never really found them an interesting team.
I never.
That's.
I can't say I'm an Uber fan.
But I'm more than a casual fan of the FF.
Especially the ultimate Fantastic Four was greatness.
Well, then answer this question for me because I really don't know how much is
Doom's fate tied to the Fantastic Four's fate in the comics.
Oh, they've always been intertwined.
And here's my thing I wanted to add is you're talking about the, you know,
there are teams.
We're supposed to be interlocking.
I didn't find the great chemistry between all four and this and I can some of their films.
I've seen.
I just saw that kind of lack lacking of teenness and bonding together in these
roles.
I got that from the level from the standpoint of.
They're still trying to exist together because you got to remember.
Read comes into this thing completely cold.
Right.
Johnny and Sue were brother and sister adopted in this one.
So there is they would have a kinship there.
And I got that.
Ben was reads best friend.
Yeah.
He's they're he's the only one.
Ben knows.
So they're still trying to get to know each other.
But they spend all that time building the thing and yaddy, yaddy, yaddy, yaddy.
He's still even after that in the in the superheroes together and all that.
That chemistry between him really wasn't there.
I didn't find it that great.
The script handcuffed that whole relationship that these would have.
Not going to debate that.
It's like with how the story presents itself.
It hinders all these relationships completely.
I'm just frustrated.
And it's like they had to have this forced chemistry because there was a rally in
the crime that got thrown out there.
You know, there's always this William Wallace moment where like we have to do it for them.
And nothing about it seemed organic.
It all it all felt forced.
It's like this team existed because it had to exist at that moment.
Sometimes.
Formulate is good.
Yeah.
Because what is one thing?
What is the one thing that we as fellow geeks always scream about when it comes to films like this?
What is the one thing that we are almost always consistent on?
What do we always cry about?
They need a cape.
No, no, no, no.
Stick to the source material.
And this thing got so far away from it.
But again, I'm okay if you step out of bounds.
I mean, we've talked a little bit with me.
I'm going back to the first class thing.
First class is so far out of continuity.
It's almost back in it.
But you don't care because it's done so well.
And you still recognize people for who they are.
And again, it was like Fox went.
Let's just do that with the fantastic four.
And it could have worked.
You were inches away from it working for me to me.
This film resembled to way too many.
Run of the mill generic sci-fi films that have come out in the last 10 years.
It just it didn't look like a comic book film.
I didn't feel like a comic book film.
You don't really know any of the powers of any of it.
But again, and really to me, it was more of a science fiction film.
Yeah.
But again, that didn't bother me because I was like.
I'm buying what you're selling right now.
You've got me right now.
And then it was just.
Well, we don't want it to be too long.
So let's just have a fight that lasts five minutes and then we'll move on.
Spoiler it.
Three two one.
Well, he already said it.
No, but we've already talked about it.
Yeah, yeah.
And I guarantee you, I'm not the only one that's going to be putting that in print.
Oh, yeah.
It's like.
You let up to what could have been so great.
And I was like, please let this pay off.
And then I looked at my watch and went.
This isn't going to pay off.
Yeah.
There's no way this can pay off because you haven't given enough time.
And it could have paid off.
But they went a different way with it and going a little bit when
Doom when Doom goes back.
It could have.
It had been fine.
I keep going back to that moment in the new Batman V Superman trailer, where the
people were on the rooftop and they look up and he's just supermanious there in silhouette.
You have that moment with Doom.
You have me where he's just like, who are you?
Who are you to come to me and think you can do anything to me?
I am doing the fact that he never referred to himself in the third person.
I never got you cannot defeat Doom.
Like,
How do you feel about his visual style?
It was based on the ultimate.
And that worked for you.
I would have rather have had the full hood and cape.
But then the rags he was wearing.
Yeah.
The other guys, I'd never find what I thought I'm going to look.
But yeah, Doom, you needed that more.
He was too Android-est for me.
He was too Green Lantern-esque for me.
But again, that part was never explained.
Nothing was ever explained.
What's that star was?
How it affected?
They took way too long to explain anything.
And by the time they got around to explaining it, you really didn't care anymore.
Yeah.
I'm just like, this road has, this car has been all over the road.
I just want to get around it.
I just want to pass it and keep it.
And you made a point, Rob.
He was just about as fearful as Dr. Evil when you think about it.
He was that this guy scares me kind of thing.
Yeah.
And up until the end of the movie, I thought Kate Mara's character was more Jean Grey.
I can see that.
I did like when they finally grew her hair out.
So she looked more Sue Stormish to me than she did in the beginning.
But man, what a lie down.
Like how can Fox get X-Men?
So right, so wrong again.
And then so right again.
And never get this right, no matter how many times they started.
The numbers of the Empire, please listen.
We will give you a final review.
We even know what we're saying.
We're pleasing out for the final.
But they will.
They were so close.
That's what frustrates me as they were so close to me going.

I don't think they, they never got in the ballpark for me.
It's almost like I was so bored by this.
You think someone at DC said, hey, Fox.
Just, let's just kick Marvel in the pain.
Yeah, that was one of the things.
Did Fox just do this just a hack Disney off?
Like, yeah, we're going to keep screwing it up
because we can because you can't have it now for another seven years.
If I'm, if I'm Disney, I'm in Marvel.
I'm like, take it.
Keep it.
I don't care.
Here's what Fox needs to understand.
Look at what they did with Spider-Man.
Sure, Sony.
We'll share the rights with you.
That'll be gone.
That'll be gone.
And the same thing's going to happen with X-Men
and it's going to happen with Fantastic Four.
Because what's going to happen is, because see, here's how dirty pull Fox played.
After the second one.
Well, you can have Galactis back,
which you can't have the Fantastic Four of the silver.
Are you kidding me?
Yeah.
Yeah.
So what's going to happen in the end?
I'd rather have Dr. Doom.
I think what's going to happen is what they've got to understand
is Disney has all the money.
Yeah.
All of your money is our belong to us.
Yeah.
And they're going to find a number that they're going to cut Fox a check.
And one of two things is going to happen.
Either A, they're going to share the rights
or two, they're going to get the rights back.
Because, and mark my words,
it is August the 6th, 2015 when we are doing this podcast.
By December 31st, 2020 Marvel has everything.
All of it.
All of it.
All of it.
All of it.
All of it.
Right.
And you mean with Disney, Marvel with Disney?
Yeah.
Okay.
Because Marvel is Disney now.
Just like C, C, as Warner Bros. Marvel is there.
I think it's kind of funny that Fox has already lost one of their most profitable
franchises to Disney and Star Wars.
And then they feel like it's almost like they look like little spoiled children.
That's what they're just stopping their feet.
That's for Jar Jar Banks.
That's their base.
His name is Banks.
And it's all his fault.

Exactly.
Do we need to find out analysis?
No.
We have to.
Because mine might surprise you.

And you know what?
I got to give Don credit here.
Because Don does kind of see this through different lenses.

It's a full price because remember this was going to be a 3D run.
And three weeks before release.
They pulled the 3D.
Apparently it's still running a 3D and some limited markets.
According to only an IMAX.

Would you go to a twilight show?
Would you pay during the day?
Would you go to an early show on Saturday?
Would you wait for it as a dollar theater?

booth of that theater with a can of lighter fluid in a box of matches and burn the print
if I could.

Just to save the people the grief of having to sit through that thing, paying 17 bucks
a pop for it.

Actually, I would give the yes in an oxygen line.
Again, don't look to this with the different lenses than we do.
I don't have the regret like I said.
But here's a deal.
I would put it at the dollar theaters for the people out there because you're only wasting a buck.

Some people still might want to see it but see it at the dollar theaters so you don't
fill your waste anything.
But I did.
I was conflicted because I liked how got so in depth into the story.
But they cut it short at the end.
That's the only reason I'm going to say is a dollar.
So you don't feel bad.
It's that you're only wasting a dollar.
They're not going to have long to wait.
I said it's going to be a dollar theaters before school.

that this went through that it's hard for me to believe that somebody somewhere
along the line didn't go question.
And the reason I put it as a dollar because it's cheaper than red box and cheaper than
movie trading company.
Well, but I'm saying the movie trading company, you can rent the actual retail version.
Yeah.
You can't get the retail version of red box with movie trading company.
It has the special features.
But it's the cheapest way.
Oh, yeah.

But it won't fulfill the need that he needs to follow.

I feel like I'm turning the Lewis black in this episode.

It just felt like an incomplete film.
