All right, you chipmunks. Ready to sink your song?
What's up?
Okay, Simon.
Okay, Peter.
Oh, okay, Alvin.
Alvin.
Alvin!
What's up, Simon?
What's up, Simon?
What's up, Simon?
What's up, Simon?
What's up, Simon?
What's up, Simon?
Greetings, Empire member and all members.
If you are hearing my voice, it means the following conditions have been met.
At least once in your lifetime, you've listened to the Clubhouse podcast live every Sunday,
night, 70's from Fort Pacific.
Your one-stop shop for all-thing sports and entertainment.
It also means you listen and subscribe on iTunes.
Because it's time for another iTunes exclusive.
I'm not going to do a chipmunk, boy, I'm sorry.
Welcome.
My name is Robyn, the executive producer of the Clubhouse podcast.
And I'm not ashamed to say I have chipmunk rock on vinyl.
I'm old school baby.
But I'm not alone for this particular episode.
Joining me across the desk is my co-host.
And a man who has just as much fondness for Alvin and Simon in the theater as I do.
He is Chad.
Welcome, sir.
Old school, yes, indeed.
I do.
Also, joining us is the official fact checker of this show.
And a man, oh, when he talks like a chipmunk, when he gets kicked really hard.
You don't have to have fun, don't go, but his mom and even don't.
I'm not even going to try it.
I have too much respect for the Empire.
So, unless you live in a cave, you know what we're about to review.
Because whenever we do one of these iTunes exclusives, it is to review something.
And this is no different.
The fourth film in the Alvin and the chipmunk series in its current incarnation called The Road Chip.
You see what they did there?
It's like a road trip.
Yeah, but they're chipmunks.
Directed by Walt Becker.
Let me give you this guy's resume.
You ready?
Uh, Kirby buckets.
Four episodes of that.
He did one episode of Sullivan and son.
I'm a fan of that show.
Oh, that's happening.
Wild hogs buying the cow and van wilder party liaison.
Still a resume.
You'll understand where a little skeptical is going to this.
But don't, but he don'ts the only one that's saw it.
So, you're going to have to have to hold ourselves back a little bit.
Well, I wanted to begin.
First off, we got to think Josh Ashley.
Everybody at Ally.
I like integrated marketing.
We love you guys.
They're best friends.
They find all of us, but only do other commitments.
You guys were able to go.
That's true.
I went for the Empire because Empire deserves to know about this.
You know, so I did the duty on this.
So let's let me do the, let me do the run down for you.
You have the voice cast of Cayley Cuoco and a Ferris Christina Applegate.
Matthew Gray Goldberg.
Justin Long and Jesse McCartney.
Yes.
That's exactly what we're doing this.
You also have Kimberly Williams.
Paisley in this.
Jason Lee, of course, returning as well.
Tony Hale is in this.
The official description says through a series of misunderstandings.
Albin Simon and Theodore come to believe that Dave is going to propose to his new girlfriend
in Miami and dump them.
They have three days to get to him and stop the proposal.
I think themselves not only from losing Dave, but possibly from gaining a terrible step
brother.
That's okay.
Done.
Struggling.
Yes.
This thing runs 86 minutes.
So it's not even an hour and a half long.
Yes.
It's a kids movie.
Yes.
I want to make sure we put this in the library more.
Exactly.
What did you think about the way this story was told?
Okay.
Here I go.
Before we begin.
If you go to my written review at the clubhousepodcast.com, that is our website.
I'm like you guys.
I'm old school.
The chipmunks with these movies that came out.
This is the fourth one.
They're trying to be the hip hop cool.
The first one was in 2007.
Yeah.
And then you had the squeal in 2009.
But I said.
And then chip wrecked in 2011.
Yeah.
And the deal is with.
You look at the history of the chipmunks and how long they've been around.
This is what it called the new the revised.
Yeah.
It's being updated for a young generation.
Exactly.
And when you think of these chipmunks in these movies.
And I saw the first one.
And I think the second one.
I don't know if I saw the third.
I can't remember.
Be an honest for the empire.
I lost a lot of interest because they're trying to be the hip hop cool.
All that kind of thing.
You're not the target demographic anymore.
Yeah.
But we were the target demographic when you're kids.
You have to be the cool hip hop this iteration.
Yeah.
Clearly not.
Christmas all that instead of doing.
You know, some of the other songs they do in this and trying to be hip hop.
When it came to the plot.
It actually kept me a little bit interested.
It really did.
All right.
I'll be honest.
It's a simplistic plot.
What you said is the plot.
Okay.
In a nutshell, without being spoiled or free.
And when you follow it, I understand this is for the kids.
Right.
This film is great for the entire family.
You know.
Oh, come on.
This comes from the soundtrack.
It does.
I heard it.
I am a good executive producer and I downloaded the soundtrack from iTunes.
Just so we'd have the music for that review.
But thank you for having no sharp objects in the studio.
But I will say honestly that the plot is good for the family.
It's good for the kids.
It's not too complicated.
There's some good emotional moments.
So it's good for the family.
As an adult, they come in.
I'm interested to understand it's simplistic.
I don't need like a real like Quentin Tarantino thought provoking film.
Okay.
It's a strange comparison.
Exactly.
But it's a good simple film.
But it's good for the family.
The kids and the kids.
I thought really were interested in it.
It's not too complicated for the young ones.
Now.
Get into the CGI.
I thought there was a very done very well.
There's a lot of scenes.
There's just.
The CGI was only putting the chipmunks in.
Right.
Because everything was real live.
I thought it makes a live action.
Yeah, it's a live action thing.
But in that for a while, the chipmunks seem to be really even though you know they're CGI.
And how the actors were able to act in as if they were there when they're not.
So they're doing like empty space acting.
I don't know what the term for that is.
But I thought the cast overall did good in the way they
they spoke and knowing that someone else is probably speaking or the chipmunks are speaking
even though they're not there.
And the way they're able to look and act is if the chipmunks were around them.
So on the CGI.
I got to give it to that.
There's some credible shots.
They took the shots.
The lovin's like in Miami and stuff like that.
Beautiful night scenes.
Show the city very well.
It's like I like to visit that.
Yeah.
So that was very.
I really did like that on the look of the film.
And nothing that actually gave me a few chuckles was.
They made a lot of references to classic films.
And I'm trying to be spoiler free.
Fair enough.
Yes.
Okay.
So I mean, there are those.
They did they did a lot of that.
Maybe not really overdid it, but there was a lot in there which.
Some people will probably laugh like I did.
Some people are gone.
Oh no.
They did not bring that movie in.
Because there's some real classics where they brought in comparison scenes.
But it was it doesn't like a cheesy kind of way or was it done well in a way or not.
Okay.
I can roll with that.
Yeah.
I could roll with it.
It's fair enough.
Shit.
Monk thing that you expect.
So I really didn't enjoy that.
There was a lot of good comedy spots in between it also.
I was surprised.
There was a lot of good comedy.
When it comes to the acting.
Earl.
Jason Lee.
I call em Earl still from my name is Earl.
Okay.
Dent and Texas resident.
Yeah.
He plays Dave in this thing.
Just like the other ones.
He's a staple.
When it comes to the acting of the real life people.
Dave doesn't credible.
Not to chipmunks and stuff like that.
Because when it comes to the actors.
They're just doing the voices.
But the acting and how he's able to.
Like when they're running around him and he's able to act and pretend like they are there.
He has that pretty downpac.
He's the, as you know, the guy who's like the voice of sanity of the four trying to make,
you know, not try to be or things aren't so radical.
He's the peacekeeper.
Okay.
Let's keep these guys down to earth kind of thing.
So in that role he did good.
Also the love interest.
Kimberly Williams.
Yeah.
Huge fan.
Have been since father of the bride.
She did some.
She did good acting in that.
She said for a simple plot kids film where there's nothing really in depth that you're going to get in this.
The guy who plays the.
Soon to be stepbrother.
You could say or of the chipmunks.
Josh.
Josh Green as miles did.
Okay.
Yeah.
He's the.
He is the son of the girl.
He's dating.
So if they get married he will be this.
She'll be he'll be either chipmunk stepbrother.
Right.
And at the beginning.
Oh, he's worth us to him.
And there was a couple of funny spots on that.
You know.
So I found that kind of interesting.
So overall acting was good.
Tony Hill.
Big fan.
Oh, yeah.
And this one does good.
Yeah.
Basically.
From a right to development.
I'm going to say that his character is he's a sky marshal.
Okay.
And he's in this a lot till the end.
Okay.
There'll be another free.
But him acting as the.
He put this way.
He takes his job too seriously.
Nice.
He doesn't well.
And does that part well.
You know, the the new version of the body five.
Can I, I need a bullet.
I need a bullet.
And he, you know, that kind of thing.
So.
He's a lethal weapon.
Exactly.
Uh, but the soundtrack.
There's.
You've heard most of it in this episode.
Yeah.
I'm going to hear some stuff or some quiet.
Oh, no.
They didn't do that.
They didn't do that.
Oh, just wait 90 seconds.
Oh, really?
Say it.
Because I saw this on the soundtrack.
I'm like, Oh, this is going in the music vet.
Exactly.
But there was a lot of modern references you can do to.
Um, I'm just going to put this out there.
Minor, minor, minor spoiler and three, two.
Don't say the one.
Thank you.
Uh, where the chipets.
They're hosting them.
That would be Kaylee Kuoko on a Ferris and Christina Applegate.
Yeah.
They Brittany, Jeanette and Eleanor.
Yeah.
They host them.
They're the judges on American Idol.
Oh, dear.
Exactly.
The chipets are not mud in this film very much.
I'd probably say you had the time together.
Probably about 10 minutes.
Okay.
You could say.
Well, they had a big role in the second one.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's second or third one.
That one I weak will.
Yeah.
I can either confirm nor deny that.
But, uh, they're not in there much.
But, you know, they added to the film.
Um, but overall, I,
I actually found the storyline enjoyable.
Fair enough.
Fell at it.
Some good comedy.
Um, the acting I thought was pretty good.
Believe it or not.
Okay.
Anything else for we'll get to the final analysis?
No.
Okay.
Judging the questions coming.
Concerns.
Too much.
Sorry.
I have to give you the opportunity.
If you want to ask down any questions.
All right.
And let's get to the final analysis.
The way we do the final analysis on this show.
We're not going to give you thumbs up thumbs down.
We're not going to give you rankings, letter grade stars.
Anything like that.
I just, I just have to go.
Yep.
Oh, God.
This is happening.
I just, I just wasn't attracted.
I just, I just wanted to say it.
I want to hear him say it.
What's here?
Oh.
Oh.
Can I play this?
Oh.
God.
Thanks.
Oh.
Oh.
I needed that.
I needed that.
Bringing stupid to it entirely different level.
But again, you're not the target audience, sir.
Even if I would.
I mean, salted by guys are age 30 years ago when Chick-munk rock, when you had the
Chick-munks singing leader of the pack, Jesse's girl and Divo's whip it.
But they were probably saying the same thing you're saying now.
The streams they're crossing.
I mean, uptown Funk almost gave you that one because that, you know,
but the,
To me, this is comedy.
To me, this is comedy.
To me, this is comedy.
No.
No.
No.
No.
Jesus.
Oh, man.
Chad just showed up.
This is horrifying.
I'm going to ask Dawn to questions.
Question number one is would he see this film again?
If the answer is no, then we're done here.
If the answer is yes.
Did I have to ask about follow-up questions?
How far is he willing to go to watch this film again?
What do you pay for price at the theater?
Was this available on 3D for you or no?
No, I don't think it was.
Okay, cool.
I don't know that it is.
I don't know.
Sometimes it's CGI.
You have to ask the question.
Would he wait for it like twilight, matinee, early morning on a weekend.
Second one at the dollar theater.
Would he go out of his house to rent it from red box?
Would he stream it on Netflix?
Wait for it to cable.
Dawn, would you see this again?
Okay.
I got to give a little asterisk on this.
I'm not the target demo, but because I remember the Saturday morning cartoons
of the chipmunks and there are two totally different things.
Absolutely.
This is version two.
So, you know, the hip hop thing, you know, it's not me now.
Would I see this film again?
No.
Okay.
But, but being the objective reviewer, that's what I'm saying.
That's what I'm saying.
That's what I'm saying.
So we ask of you.
I'm giving you honestly.
I won't mind it, but just think again.
It's not me.
But the recommendation to the family's out there.
Right.
Kids who this is targeted toward towards.
I thought there's some good comedy.
I like the storyline.
It was good for the family.
I'm going to say matinee.
So good family matinee's been the day together.
Exactly.
Yeah.
Fair enough.
That's what the environment is.
Exactly.
It is Alvin in the chipmunks, the road chip.
It's out there as soon as you can hear this.
We can be forth in the officially now franchise of this generation's Alvin in the chipmunks.
We can only pray for Alvin in the chipmunks.
The green inferno is the sequel.
Wow.
You took it there.
You darn right.
You took it there.
I'm going to chipmunks the chip wars.
Put them in the hunger games as bait.
Let's get to the plug.
