The following is a sooner orgator production. Hello senior, you have paid for part of the program. All right, let's do this thing.
We are live backstage at the Dallas Summer Musical High School Musical Theater Awards 2016. I said that all in one breath. If you got the pre-show, we hope you did, if not, it is available on the archive in on iTunes.
Welcome back again. I am Rob, I am the executive producer of the Clubhouse podcast. Two of my writers, Mike co-host and a man who's got a little bit more energy than I do right now.
He is Chad. Good evening sir. Across from him is the official fact checker of this show and a man that's not nearly as tired as he normally is because they're making it so easy on us.
He is done. Hey, I'm going to be, you know me, hi, see you later. I'll be back.
All right, do you? Right now, we've had the first award of the evening given out and the winner is a cross from me right now. Getty Boyd High School Zone.
I don't have any stats on us, I can't give you a hi-ver-way or anything. Bryson Jackson, welcome sir. Talk right into that thing, sir, buddy.
Can you hear you? Oh. There you are.
So, best featured actor. Yeah. Has it sunk in?
Is it still surreal to you? How are you feeling right now? It's surreal, Scott.
It's scared. Scared, why are you scared? It's very parts over my foot.
You beat in the scary part, you got it. This is a gorgeous award, too. I know it's actually beautiful.
Now, let's be honest, you get to keep it, you're going to let's school have it. Oh no, I'm going to keep it. There you go.
I'm so literally. All right, so talk about where are you in your high school career, first of all? I'm a sophomore.
So, oh, wow, you got a lot of time to go then. Yeah. So, do you exhale now?
Are you on to the next thing just yet? What's going on? Um.
Yeah, I'm on to the next thing. What's the next thing? Um.
We'll see, I don't know. I mean, do you know which production you're going to do for the school next? Um.
Well, they haven't really told us the next production, but I am staged managing STEM technologies in McKinney, Boyd High School. Really? Yes.
Wow. Do you take any downtime or is it important for you just to keep going and keep going? I keep going.
So, are you going to work through the summer or is it going to be on that production or are you doing some other things this summer? This summer. I'm doing a lot of community theatres and stuff like that.
Anything, because we're all about selfish. I don't. Selfless.
Thank you. Selfless selfless. Same old shameless self promotion on this show.
We'll get the adjective right. Is there anything that you want to promote while you're here because that's what we're all about? Yeah, I'll promote it.
Go ahead. That's what we're here for. I'm Kinney Boyd High School.
They're doing Allison and Wonderland. It's kind of like an insane asylum and it's really cool. It's actually in a couple of weeks and some mechanisms is coming up to in the Kinney Boyd High School.
Wow. So what started you in musical theater? I'm a middle school director of Mrs.
Becky. She was really nice to me and she welcomed me into theater and I don't know. She.
Yeah. So I got to ask about the moment. Yeah.
You're sitting there. They say your name. What goes through your head?
What the heck did I just do? You like, did I just do that? Did I just do that?
That's the girl next to me. It's my name, Bryson Jackson. She was like, yeah, that's you and I was like, okay.
When you're on that stage, do you look out there and it does it freak you out or I mean because there's what? I mean this thing holds about how many people? 18, 1900.
I would say about 40 million. Things like 20, 300. I think it's somewhere between two and 25.
You know what? Why don't we just, we're just going to keep him here. We're going to have another guest join us because we have that.
We've got the winners. We have the winners. Alright.
There we are because we're not keeping here. Or as long as we possibly can. Also joining us right now.
Also just one best featured actress, Shelby Griswald, Pierce High School, singing in the rain. Again, the kids doing the classics. Welcome.
How are you? I'm good, how are you? I couldn't be better if I tried.
It's probably not as good as you though because you got the hardware. Yes, yes. I've got a mixing board.
You've got hardware. All different ball game. We were just talking about that moment.
They say your name, what happens? You honestly don't think it's going to happen to you. You're like, oh, everybody else.
You have one in 10 chance. Everyone else is going to get it, not you. And then you call it, they call your name.
It's just this moment of, wow, wow, it actually happened. And then that crazy moment of trying to find your way to the stage and immediately try to think of what you're going to say because I didn't prepare anything. And see, that was going to be my next question.
What is your thought process? Because at one hand, you want to prepare something. But on the other hand, is there that little voice in your head that goes, don't do that, seriously.
Dude, don't you? You don't want to jinx it. Because I was like, if I ever wanted a word like that, I wouldn't prepare anything.
But I had like a really long piece of paper in my pocket that I would just throw down on this stage. I could look like I had like a 19 page thing to do. Now, I asked Bryson, I got to do this.
Are you keeping the hardware? I'm keeping it. Okay.
You know, we're not judging. I'm just, it's an interesting dichotomy because, you know, it's like, can I have two? So I think they could have one and then everybody's happy.
It's a gorgeous award. It's absolutely beautiful. And it's what I really love.
Number one is the enthusiasm. Like, we were talking in the pre-show. We were in the lobby.
We could hear everybody through the glass. Like, that's how loud you guys have been. Tomorrow, do you wake up and you go, okay.
Now that this has done, let's do the next thing. Or, or do you just, is it, how long is this going to carry your adrenaline? I think, honestly, to the next year, because my school Pierce High School was lucky enough to invest musical last year.
And so this award show has become such an integral part of our yearly experience. Absolutely. That whole year is building up to this moment.
And I think so, they take that energy and we carry it through the whole following year. And it's, it's really great. All right, Bryson.
I'm going to ask both of you the same question because there's kind of a question that fascinated me. And we've asked it to a couple of other participants early in the evening. You get to do one musical.
Hmm, my entire life. No, the next one, you get to pick the musical you do. What do you do?
Here's for you. Okay. Oh, jipsy.
All right. All right. Now, go to the second part of that question.
Okay. You get to see one musical. Oh, no.
Oh, no. Um, bullets of a Broadway. And it's going to be here.
Yeah. In about six weeks. We're at Dallas Hall at Music Call of Fair Park.
Oh, probably right now, waitress because it just came out. It's Russian. I love Sarah Brullis.
So I'd have to see waitress. Who doesn't love Sarah Brullis? So I have an unhealthy crush on Sarah Brullis.
It's unhealthy. It's unhealthy. Interesting choices.
Because she just, she didn't she just release the album from it? Yes. Like within the last couple of weeks.
Yeah. She was right on it. I'm such a sucker for Miss Saigon.
Oh, yeah. That. And it's going to be here.
I think year after next. Yeah. It's going to be the town.
But what am I doing? What am I doing? What am I doing?
Oh, okay. Don's just showing us our Instagram feed, which we finally have up and running. Look up the clubhouse podcast on Instagram.
I will. I love it. I am addicted to Instagram.
It's insane. I have done more selfies in the last six months. And I have done in my entire life.
And I blame my niece and nephew because we went to Disney for a weekend back in September. And I haven't seen them in like a decade. So it's like I have to take 19,000 pictures with these two kids because and all of a sudden I'm like, I'm selfie.
It's an art. I am a 40 something white guy. I should not be selfie.
You know, it's the weirdest thing. But I love it. And we talked a little bit in the pre show.
I want to hear it from you guys as well. There's people from all over North Texas here. How does, I mean, because you talked about you guys were here last year.
Do you work your social media into that? Are you taking the time and networking with people from other schools and things that are at nature? Actually, um, a little bit.
I know we are local schools like Pierce High School's right by Richardson High School and Berkner and I know through one next competition is happening right now to and see other schools around that time as well. And so we really get to talk about DSM and nominations. And Berkner and Berkner are great to get to know people as well.
So it's a good networking experience. And then do you then take that time of, hey, we got to make sure that we see you guys next year. Yeah.
Or, I mean, and another question that I think we're going to ask a lot tonight because I've only asked it once and I feel like I'm doing a disservice to the show. Take your current bias away. Mm-hmm.
Number one, how many other productions from other schools have you seen this year? Oh, like two. I'm the worst.
Okay, no, that's better than zero. No, no, you're better than me. I've seen zero.
Oh, okay. I've seen zero. That's what I love about this competition is getting to see numbers from the other shows and seeing other high schools, and that's why leaders are...
Yeah, because your production cycles kind of coincided with each other for the most part, but you probably probably can't get away. Our numbers show is at the exact same time as one of the Mary Poppins and the exact same time as funny girl at X Pleno and Z. I have to see it.
So yeah, I love seeing that numbers from the other shows and talking to other kids. Where are you in your high school career? I'm a senior.
Okay, so this is the ball game. Yes, this is the end of the road. Well, or is it?
No, it's not. Where are you going? I'm pursuing musical theater.
I'm majoring in musical theater at Baldwin Wallace in Beria, Ohio. Wow. Yeah, it's pretty far, but I'm excited.
But you know, you go where you go. Yeah, yeah. You know, and if that's the program you want to be involved and then you should be involved in that program.
Yes, nothing wrong with that. Oh, excited. Awesome.
Wow. Anything, sir? You got me.
Got you. Got you. That doesn't join the fun catering here in the green room.
To me, it's just, I get a, I get a glow in my chest because I did this for four years in high school myself. And I absolutely loved it. And I don't even recall that we even had anything.
I went to mosquito high school. And like I know that the music man is represented here and I wasn't that one. We did the Wizard of Oz and Annie and stuff like that.
And I remember how much I enjoyed it. And I can see it just oozing out of your pores, the both of you. I can, it's palpable.
I can feel how much you love doing this because I know how much I love doing it when I did it. And I'm so happy for you guys that you get to experience this on this level. Enjoy this moment as much as you can.
Absolutely. And we don't want to take up too much of your time because you've got celebrating to do. Yes.
So congratulations to both of you. Make sure like I want 19 pictures each on social media. If you guys with your awards tonight.
All right. Yes. Go enjoy the evening guys.
Congrats guys. We are live the Clubhouse podcast. We are backstage.
I mean we're we're behind the scenes sir. We're ninja style right now. Literally in the green room at the Dallas summer musical Dallas high school theater musical Wards.
I need to just record that because I don't know if I can keep saying that without being out of breath. You can be like a human drop machine. There's a lot going on tonight.
We've got more winners about to sit with us. We're going to have dignitaries coming and joining us all throughout the evening. We've got a bunch of people remember if you're listening live.
We have a live chat room where you can talk to each other. You can send us questions. We will give you the instant feedback also.
Be aware that you can get every show we do on iTunes. Look up the Clubhouse podcast. Look for the logo with the star with Chad and I's initials on the top of it.
Also we would love it. If you do go to iTunes do us a solid give us a review. Yes.
Please. We're going to get to feedback from the Empire. I just know what you'd like to hear.
What you won't. What you don't want to hear. And tomorrow night we're doing another live show.
Tonight is the opening night also for the Dallas International Film Festival. We're going to be live from the lounge as the kids like to say tomorrow night. Probably around six o'clock central.
Don's going to be bringing us many, many dignitaries as he tends to do. We've got people sitting with us now. Before we get going.
The next winners are the best choreography from the All Saints Academy. And it's for the Drowsy Shaperone. Drowsy Shaperone.
I'll do some selves on the air real quick. Sit down. Put on some headphones.
This is your moment. This we're here to talk to you. Not the other way around.
All right. Thank you. I'm Taylor Weathers.
And I'm Ashley Barra. Best choreography. Yes sir.
Sir. To me choreography is something that is always fascinating to me because number one I can't do it. It's difficult.
It definitely is. Yeah. The Drowsy Shaperone, which I did to turn and burn to New York.
And of course it was on a Monday. So everything was dark. But I remember the Drowsy Shaperone at the time was on Broadway.
Wow. Yeah sir. Tell that for those of our because we're all over the world.
And so we have some people that we understand. A lot of the things we're talking about. Tell our audience basically.
Give me give me the 30 second version of what the Drowsy Shaperone's about. Well, it doesn't really have one concrete plot. Okay.
So it's kind of a wedding mishmash that you show up and you have Robert Martin and Jan of Underground. They're trying to get married. But of course there's some conflict along the way.
And they, well, Robert accidentally kisses a French girl and then you have to have a whole music number and a whole song and dance to get them back together again. There you go. Let's see.
Stick and move. Stick and move. That's what I'm talking about.
Well, when you have to choreograph something like this. Do you draw upon source material? Do you kind of take it off on its own deal?
Is there a little bit of both? Well, we were actually just the dance captains. And so we did not choreograph this show.
That was all our choreographer, Alisa Love Valley. So we can't take credit for that. But we helped clean it.
We helped teach other people who maybe weren't as familiar with dance to do that. So choreography was not us, but we definitely helped with it, I think. How long did it take you to, to you were at the point where you're like, okay.
We're at a point where this is getting comfortable. We almost got there a little before tech week. And then we had a lot of disasters hit our production.
One of our cast members had an emergency appendectomy. And we had a couple injuries. Yeah, so it was kind of rough.
We went from very good to not so good to very good again. So it was kind of up and down. And because people that are, what's going on?
Oh, this is, we're hearing the bleed over from the house. It was like, it's dance, foam going off. What's going on?
Or is that dance singing? Is this a point where you can exhale or is it to the point where, okay, we got something else going on here. We got to move on to the next thing.
Well, I mean, being dancers, I guess. There's always, always another show coming up. We have a show tomorrow actually, a dance performance.
So there's always something going on. But I guess this just kind of pushes us to do even better just to, just to try even harder. It's really, really amazing.
And I know we're both seniors and so we won't be here next year. So it's really cool to be able to accept this award and be able to kind of have that legacy to carry on. Well, you said you're not going to be here next year, of course, because you're graduating.
Where are you going to be? I'm going to Francesca University, which is a small school in Ohio. Second, Ohio represent in twice so far.
Yes. Nice. I'm going to Trinity University down in San Antonio.
Okay. Okay. So I got asked, I'm asking every, all the winners this question.
Does the award go home? There's the award go to the school. Probably does the school?
Probably to the school. Yeah. Is it like the Stanley Cup or like you get it for a day?
And then you get it for a day. Pass it around. I'll do that.
Yeah. It's kind of the cool thing because there's so many people involved in this deal. And you want to bring them all up there with you, but you're like, like, 30 seconds.
You know? Yeah. So is the adrenaline now starting to wear off?
Or is it just because of this, does it fire you up more? I'm so pretty fired up. Yeah.
It's so there. Is tomorrow when excused absence or you're going to slog through it? We have to do our performance.
Oh, yeah. We have to read that all day. And also it's our last day of full classes at school.
Yes. So we have to show up and pull off the senior prank. And we've probably pulled.
Now can I tell you my favorite one I've heard in the last few years? Yes. Bunch of seniors.
They got three goats and they let them loose in the school. And they painted numbers on them. One, two, and four.
And so all the teachers spend days looking for three because they were thought they were numbered. I was brilliant. That's so clever.
And we have that clever. I have a number three. Now they're taking it.
It's fine. They did news. So, and we haven't asked them more question.
All things a pistol school is where? Well, worth the taxes. Oh, you're right down the road.
So, because there's so, you know, I don't know if you don't have why this thing has gone. You know, you've got abolines here. Paris is here.
Texas, not France. Waco's here. You know, it just keeps getting bigger and bigger every year.
So, now does this mean that you get to go to school tomorrow and tell you're true, pal. Or out. You got to up your game.
Maybe. For sure. I mean, we're definitely going to be like, because now you want the back.
You want the back to back? Exactly. The legacy has to start, right?
Yeah. It's got to continue, too. All right.
We're going to let you guys go enjoy your evening. Thank you. Congratulations.
Best choreography. All Saints at Pisckel School for the drowsy shaperone. Thank you.
Thank you guys for being in our business. This thing keeps wrong. I thought we were going to have breaks.
That dog is going to hunt, sir. Because they're just coming through. Also, we've had tonight.
Bryson Jackson, McKinney Boyd High School wins for best featured actor, best featured actress. Shelby Griswell Pierce High School. We did get a question in the chat room to keep everybody posted on what awards have been awarded.
There's only been three so far tonight. Well, technically four, we did have the Leah and Jerome M. Full and Winder award that went to one of our local teachers.
If you want to keep up, we're actually posting the winners as they happen on our Facebook page. Because chat and chat is handling all of our social media. I'm doing my best to keep up.
I got to drive the truck. He's just navigating the waters. Because we have more people sitting down.
Can we? Can we get friends? Let's go to just give us one of those awards.
Lifetime achievement award. For our one year that we've done. Yeah.
This is a quarter nice. I just want one for being the mayor of Awesome Town. Can I have that?
I don't think they give that a wrong hand. All right. Oh, scenic design.
All right. Let me. Find.
There it is. All right. We got two more people joining us.
Winning for best scenic design. We're going to let you guys introduce yourselves. My name is Mallory Gill.
I'm the stage manager and assistant director at Pierce. My name is Truston Cannon. I am the crew chief for the entire technical group.
First of all, congratulations. Thank you. It's not an awesome award.
It's great. Okay. So I'm asking this to every one of the comes through.
Does it go to the house? Or does it go to the school? Or do you just fight like thunder dome?
Two men enter one man leaves. Whoever comes out wins. That one sounds like a plan.
I think she can take you. You might want to be careful when he asked that question. Because we're saying if you've got a crew of people that win awards, I think it should be like the Stanley Cup.
Everybody gets it for a day. And then at the end, it goes to the school. Now, as a stage manager, I have done that bit.
It's not that it sucks, but you feel like you're constantly hurting cats. Yeah. You know, it's.
I never thought of it. You're just like, oh, go, go, go, go now. Go now.
Yeah. At what point do you just, does it finally just everything settle? It is not settled until the curtain gum goes down.
Or is there a rhythm at some point where you're like, okay, and now this thing is firing? Or do you, are you just there until it's over? Uh, there and till it's over.
It never really settles for me. I mean, it's, it's live action. So, so there's always something every night that's different than the night before.
So, you got to be on your toes, ready to handle whatever comes at you. I was doing things the last night that I hadn't done. The first night.
She's being fed lines. I used to generally. The one girl that does not want to be on the microphone is feeding the line.
Yeah. We had one of our best featured actors. He didn't, he didn't win.
But a best featured actor fell on the set after the rainfall. And all that was very slippery. So, we had to be very aware of that every time they did bow.
Singing in the rain, one of my favorite musicals of all time. It's a good one. From a cruise standpoint.
At what point, I mean, this has to be a huge challenge because there's so much involved in the design and execution of this musical and what it does. Talk about the challenges that you guys have had to face. I mean, we had a ton of work calls, ton of volunteer parents coming to help just build this set.
A lot of work calls over Christmas break that were seven hours long building and testing. And even when we got the rain to work, it still had to go through a ton of different versions because it wouldn't flow just right, but we finally got it. And oh yeah, I got to go to class too.
Yeah, also that. Somewhere in there. Maybe.
So where are you guys in your high school careers? Seniors. Okay, so closing of one chapter, starting of another.
Where does the next chapter go for you? I'm not doing continuing theater at all. It's been a great part of my life, and I'm very thankful for it.
Not not carrying on in college. Where are you going though? Point Park University and Pittsburgh.
Oh, okay. Don, don's section of the country. Don's a big Pittsburgh guy.
Yeah. I am also not continuing theater. I plan to go to UTD.
You've never seen a Texas at Dallas for people that are not because we're all over the world. So we have to be specific. What do you major in?
I'm planning on me majoring in mechanical engineering. Very nice. Kind of left turning it.
And there's nothing wrong with that. Because we have seasons in our lives. And sometimes you get to a point like you know what?
This is where I'm at. And this is this is cool by me. Exactly.
Excuse the absence tomorrow. Are we going to truck through school? Tomorrow we have to go.
I took my day off today. Yeah. Well luckily you're not traveling too far.
Because you're at Pearson. That's just right up there on the north side. So because you got people coming from three, four hours.
And I'm like, that bus is going to be so quiet going home. That adrenaline is going to work. And the crash just happens.
I'm already about to crash tonight. I don't think I've had any water at all today. Well then I'm going to let you guys go get some blood flowing.
Get moving a little bit. Congratulations again. Thank you.
Go enjoy your evening. We're so happy to sat with us. Thank you.
Thank you. Thank you so much. We are fast and furious.
We are continuing on. That's so many pieces of paper. And somebody else that's out dressing me.
This is not cool. Sit down my friend. Another award that's been let out right now.
Best lighting goes to. And I want to say it like the guy we had in the pre show. The Grand Prairie Fine Arts Academy.
Remember that? Yes. Except for the word fine.
Big fish. Dillon Scott. Yes.
All right. Talk right in that microphone. Congratulations.
Thank you. We were talking in the pre show. Best lighting.
When we were young people many, many years ago when dinosaurs were around the earth. Lighting wasn't what it is now. And to win on the award like this, there isn't art form to this.
Right. I want to hear from from your point of view that the challenges of lighting are production because big fish. It's not just a title.
It's a big production. There's a lot going on with this production. How many challenges did you face getting this thing?
Getting the mood right from a lighting standpoint? Well, our first main problem was we had huge walls floor to ceiling six of them. And we could not figure out a way to get LEDs up in our grid that way we could get it on the stage evenly with those walls.
So our biggest challenge was figuring out where we could actually place the LEDs. And so after a lot of trial and error, we finally figured that out. And then I guess next biggest challenge, projections was one of our main lighting instruments.
Okay. And which I'm a big fan of projection lighting because you can do so much with it. It's amazing.
And we didn't want to just project directly onto our site because it was mostly covered up by walls. So we used a new software that we found to actually project onto those walls with projection mapping. And as the walls move, the projections went with them.
It was a lot, a lot of just moving one centimeter but that one little thing of light. We got it figured out and it was amazing. The first time you actually saw it work.
Did you just did your brain just explode? I have this beautiful picture we did New York skyline. And I have this beautiful picture and my parents, I showed it to my parents when I got home.
I go, let me this picture that I found. And they asked if it was from New York when we were there that Christmas. And I said, no, this is our stage from today.
Wow. Wow. Where are you in your high school career?
I'm only a sophomore. I'm 15, 16 next week. Happy early birthday to you.
Thank you. Get into the fun age. Yeah.
Do they drive it 16 in Texas? Yes. Okay, because I've heard differing opinions.
I grew up in Florida so it was completely different ballgame. So what's next? I mean, have you got, do you know the next production that you guys are doing?
Um, I know my teachers for sure. No, our musical for next year. Trying to squeeze that out of them slowly.
I came in. I got to prepare. You got to tell me now.
Yep. We have. We're doing a smaller production of picnic and just our black box.
We have acting with the stars as one of our things. It's annual at our school. Take on dancing with the stars, but we get teachers.
And we actually do acting scenes with our teachers and presents. That's critical. Yeah.
It's an amazing fun. Alright. Here's the next question.
Nobody's listening so don't worry about it. Okay. Does the award go to the house or does it go to the classroom?
It's going to have to go to school. How many people were on the team? Um, on our technical team.
Not including just our stage crew that actually moved the set. But just designers and builders. We only have seven in our entire school.
Oh, wow. But stage hands. We had to use a lot of actors to help us with that because of such the huge production that it was.
Are you think that, you know, you got two years of high school left? Are you already thinking about what you want to do after high school? Were you continue on with this?
Are you going to go in a different direction? I actually have already thought of it. I'm really looking into UT.
Austin? Yes. I was okay.
It kind of depends. I might go with my parents into their business. I might be going.
My teacher really inspired me. I made Jordan better to actually become a technical theater teacher. Really?
I'm really not thinking deeply about that. Okay. Yep.
Awesome. We're going to go let you enjoy the evening. Congratulations again.
Big fish. Grand Prairie Fine Arts Academy. This was Dylan Scott.
Best lighting. And he's already gotten a shout out on our Facebook page from Sarah Tubner. Oh, very nice.
That is. That is one of our history teachers. Awesome.
She said, way to go Dylan and you also got a light from Shannon Wright. That is my math teacher. There you go.
I think she may be in our chat room too. Oh, really? Yeah.
So there's that. Go enjoy your evening, Sarah. Congratulations again.

I'll be back. All right, we're here and we're gonna be here for the entire show We're not we're not bailing and there's gonna be a 20 minute intermission coming up very very very shortly I just love a judge. I'm just not just top just because I want to listen We we actually have a speaker in the green room.
It's kind of feeding us what's going on But it's kind of hard to listen to that and talk to the winners that this ain't tough to split focus Because then you're really not focusing We've also got some some of our media friends here. They're doing some video interviews So we want to make sure they get they get taken care of first before we get to talk to these to these high school winners a lot of talented kids I would I wish I wish we had a video monitor so we could see what's going on in that that was the one thing I was doing what I'm gonna continue to lobby I want us to be Presenter's next year. You're out of your mind.
I'm no serious. I want to do this I want to get out there and I want people to throw their hands in the air and wave them like they just don't care And but it's all about you can be my hype man the kids kind of give them to the two each other. Don't they aren't they the presenters Or the students I think for the major award.
I don't know be on that I don't want to steal any of their thunder. You know because this is kind of like their day in this side But I but I also like the mix of productions of these kids that we've talked to You know everything from the spam a lot all the way back to my fair lady. Yeah, it's it runs the gamut It's it's not really they don't really pigeonhole themselves and they're doing strictly modern productions there They're they're wanting to take the challenge and go back in time a little bit and we also want to remind everybody that Disney on Broadway is going to be having auditions for their productions On Broadway on it's not that's just not being facetious.
That's on Broadway April the 30th right here in Dallas Because there's a lot of talent this town sir. I mean and that does my heart good because that means that we're gonna be getting the Lion King back here Sometimes soon and We'll be getting a laden for the first time as it begins. It's it's nationwide tour I'm looking forward to that one looks pretty spectacular if you've got the led and blue right you get a little peek at it Also be aware, you know, we are at Music Hall of Fair Park home of Dallas summer musicals in their 76 season.
There are four shows left in this year We are five days away five or six days away somewhere in that neighborhood from wicked Brickett's gonna run about a month after that you're gonna have a ragtime after that you're gonna have bullets over Broadway And I'm they're gonna finish their 76 season with 42nd Street finishing strong It's been a rock solid season and again Subscribe to us on iTunes and if you don't have an apple device if you have an Android device There is a podcast thing app that you can download and You can subscribe to us there. I've got a lot going on a Lot, I mean going on.
It sounds like we're on the stage right now Jackie, I mean the speakers like probably what 10 feet from us if that There's a there is a lot going on and the participation has been amazing We're getting ready to have another couple kids sitting down with us here just a moment I wish I could bottle some of this enthusiasm and sell it Well, you always got to make money off stuff. Well, just because I can't you just do it for the love of America I'm not gonna judge you outwardly Also, I want to remind you tune in to tomorrow night We're doing another live show tomorrow night as the Dallas International film festival gets underway We will be live from the lounge as the kids like to say So I'm more lunacy Now the lunacy's next for Well, yeah, that's true. So Needless to say we are taking Sunday off this week.
Yeah, we might do a brief show next week wrapping up the Dallas International Film Festival But no no live show no lot full-blown live show this week. All right We have guests as the kids like to say You got for me, Don All right joining us right now Best musical direction Walks to hatchy high school right down the road of peace as they like to say for spam a lot We're gonna let you guys introduce yourselves I'm Ariel Madena senior at Walks at she high school and I'm Maxwell Navarro. I'm senior at Walks at she high school So Two is if we had three different productions to spam a lot tonight or two Maybe two I think it's two You already got a bias with me because I'm a big fan of the musical.
I'm a big I actually saw Spam a lot here at Dallas music college fair park a few years ago my wife surprised me with tickets When I found out that there were high school doing it. I was a little like okay, because I know the source material One of the questions we asked one of the other young guys. I believe that it's in your production who's up for and the plate lady of a lake How does that process work because with musical direction you kind of have to in a production like this You kind of have to navigate some pretty murky waters How much Changes did you have to make in order for this thing to fly or if it all yeah, actually Our director Andy Reynolds he From the get go he was pretty certain on not changing anything so we kept it Just as it is we Just We weren't we tried to not be afraid to push the big and I think we did just that and Did it well enough how many people on the team?
That you have to share this award with us put it that way all of them Because the and I'm telling everybody I think you should do it like the Stanley cup everybody gets it for a day And then at the end of course probably this school gets to keep it. But you know, whatever We're just gonna do it once up with one of you. I'm not here I'm just saying We'll put it in the choir room.
Is it not and it is it not a gorgeous piece of hardware. Oh, I love it. It's it's absolutely gorgeous Okay, I'm like my wheel's got shot out there a little bit now.
So where are you in your high school careers? We're both seniors. Okay, so What's next I'm gonna go study Math and music Where?
TCU Texas Christian University Fort Worth Yes, beautiful campus. I was there earlier this year for the the armed forces bulb it did out there At beautiful, okay, I mean when I've I've been in Texas now a little over 20 years when I first moved here TCU is like the size of this room And and you know that when you go there because everything's brand new and it's a gorgeous campus I'm thinking about going to Navarro and course I can and just for a few years and then going somewhere else transferring Which it's I think it's more of a smarter move financially There's nothing wrong with that Therapy for like the first two years of an association. You now have his attention He is a he's a massage therapy student as well.
Oh, hello. Yeah, I For those of you that aren't local here walks I had you about 30 minutes south of Dallas proper straight down the highway Another another booming area. Oh, yes definitely we've recently got a raising canes and I know now you're a big market big time You've got a canes in town.
Oh, yes, I want a caniac with a large bottle of water. Let's get this done Crinkle fries make everything better. I don't care the only thing better than crinkle fries are waffle fries And then you got Chick-fil-A and then it's over and call that we actually got a Chick-fil-A a few years ago And it was the greatest thing So tomorrow excused absence or do you go back to school?
We'll be there. Oh, we'll be there Unfortunately. Oh, no, why didn't I and not much left.
We got like three four weeks left. Oh Now give or take a month. Yeah, and you got to prepare for things like prom Not saturday as in for us in today titties Thursday, right?
It's like this Saturday So that's just you kind of have to go to get ready for all that I'm staying only what we're gonna let you guys go enjoy the evening can graduate relations Gotta go perform now. Oh, oh, we have to listen to it. I'm gonna have to pull one ear off because you know how much I love this musical Congratulations guys.
Thank you so much. All right. We're gonna keep moving I think cool fest being it is actually giving us the winners as they happen because they are two for two Joining us now best orchestra Our alternative My fair lady and we're gonna let these kids introduce themselves because that's how we roll Hi, I'm in the Jason Grego.
Hi, I'm at a stage of Oregon. Okay. So best orchestra What do you play?
I play the cello and that's basically it I play the violin No, sorry don't you're out No, sorry don't hear out I'll let you call it the v-or That is a very well documented thing on this show So my fair lady Probably older than your parents probably because we're old guys we can say that When you first had to take a look at it because being Performing something that you don't know or have never heard before can be a very challenging thing This isn't and this is also not a real easy musical to play At what how deep into this before you finally went okay, I think we have it Honestly before Opening I honestly Yeah, everybody good of any other parts. Okay. All right.
It's coming up now. Yep. I mean Sorry Jason, but I actually how I I mean my artist probably gonna murder me for this But I actually learn the music as I learn to play it during like the full rehearsals and stuff And so I just like progressively learn it the more I play it But that's that's not a bad thing for some people because some people that the bet they can it's harder for them to learn it on their own It's easier for them to learn it with the ensemble.
I'm a band geek so we're talking to the same language here trust me Now granted I could never be in an orchestra because I play saxophone saxophone was invented until the 1850s when all the good music Have been written for work So where are you in your high school careers? Well, we're both juniors Yeah, and that's basically it, but I also want to you know pursue a college a career in music since you know I'm actually starting to learn it another instrument call to be a lawyer right now I see see he went until dawn without a room Then he brought up the viola. That's what Jason does Are you looking to pursue music from a composing standpoints?
more of a I guess a player and it's some finnie that because I I can't do freaking conducting it's like too It's Yeah, stressful and you have to know everything yeah That's what makes the smile such an amazing conductor is that not only does she conduct an orchestra Conducted a boat band and orchestra. She also cues everybody on stage and so she basically does everything shout out to the conductor Yeah, I always got a shout out to the conductor Okay, so I give you your choice Any orchestra you get to play within the world who do you pick? I Okay, I can choose Can I go with the economy awards orchestra?
Why not? Because they always have some of the coolest conductors on the planet plus some of the best music play This is true. Not gonna debate that not gonna debate that So since we're talking about it.
Do you have a favorite score? Pies the Caribbean. Oh the first one Okay, because just because you got another one coming because you had a clown spit delton You had Hans Zimmer that took over for class but now Say hello to cows John Williams like there's like conductor composers and then there's John with like that's the list Yeah, I like you know which I like these kids a lot I'm I now speak you since we're talking about Star Wars and at this point you're in my wheelhouse Have you seen the rogue one trailer?
Yes, I'm in love with that that score Destroyed me. I'm so excited. I was like whoever thought of taking the imperial theme and doing it on a piano That person is not making enough money Because Like I watched grown men break into tears watching this the teaser That's how it's supposed to be and it was because of the score of course Man, I was I got shivers down my spine and all that It was a good feeling good to see the kids like I know it's not just us Okay, so who's taking the award home tonight?
This virus got to give it to the director always now and we've been talking about this all night and the people in the chat room Can contest to this I'm still saying you do it like the Stanley cup everybody gets it for a day I actually like the idea and then at the end Welcome to under the bus bill population you might for my cello A few times. Oh, yeah, that's probably true Did you just like have that moment recently? Yes, I like I can't I stop breathing and don't know what to do So do you guys know what what new school next?
We don't we usually find that out When we sign up yeah, yeah, exactly. Would they always sign up October? Yeah, I think so.
You got a nice little break then. Yeah, we start on dish non-onditions We start all of our rehearsal saying you know members every single Thursday until performance is yeah All right, God I missed those days I really do I don't know what being in band by this point. I mean we were we're getting ready to warm up for state But after state you just kind of coast it like your our final exam was we had to listen to our performance and we had to Avaluated ourselves Which that was the worst thing ever for me I for theater I felt like it's like the ride never stopped It's like you do your like we did a children's production and the fall There we go and do the fest being convention that would come back and finish the children's production then we go into UIL It was just a constant a constant thing All right, we're gonna let you guys go enjoy the rest of your evening Congratulations again Our old Turner my fair lady best orchestra All right have a great night guys.

I just I got a work in the morning I wish this was my whole job. Come on sit down Don what am I doing Okay, excellent Gonna gonna change it up a little bit because we can That's really because I was I'm looking at the program Dallas some of musicals university scholarships Because you know college is so cheap Yeah, yeah, that kind of that kind of change just falls out of our pocket on the golf course. I got that on me But what we're gonna do is I'm gonna let you introduce yourself my name is Savannah Morgan I'm from 40s Texas and I go to North 40 high school 40 right down the street from us.
We're in the great city of Mesquite. So you're just not that far away from us I'm Maya Navit from Richardson high school all right guess put your headphones on so you can hear yourselves all right So you know work kind of new to this thing so I'm probably gonna ask some really dumb questions So be prepared for that Did you know coming in? Okay, so this was a competition that you have been a recipient therein Yeah, so tell us a little bit and either one of you can go first on good either way Tell me about the process of what got you to hear Well there was a scholarship application.
I had to fill out I think in the beginning of February and There was two essay questions and you also had to fill out Questions about your academic achievements in school and outside of school Yeah, the same as her my director just told me about this opportunity and I just jumped on it Awesome, I mean what so let's talk about some productions. What have you guys done? My most recent production was happening in the musical at North 40 there you go And last year for DSM it was high school musical.
Okay My school did two musicals this year we did foot loops and that boy the musical and then last year we are Hold on back up, back up. What the musical? Bat boy in the musical now is this as in baseball?
No, it's a half that half child sort of a Halloween horror So it's like the weekly world news did a musical. Oh, okay. Okay.
Okay. It's based on that Okay, now you mentioned bat anything you have my attention because I am I am an unhealthy fan of Batman So I was like wait wait wait wait wait wait wait And then I was like well me yeah, then it didn't take so my mind took a really weird direction Bat boy the musical It's very strange, but it's a lot of fun. It was so much fun to begin Well, when it's stuff that's a little out there like that you get you have a little bit I guess a little more creative freedom I guess because you're like you know what if we're gonna be wearing let's just go all the way You know, they didn't entirely in gray scale and so because it was like from the newspaper and so that's So what's from the weekly world news?
Nice So I'm assuming seniors because these are scholarships Where is this scholarship money going? University of Notre Dame South Bend South Bend here I've been there been there really The one thing I think is crazy about Notre Dame is if you didn't know Notre Dame was in South Bend You wouldn't know because it's so it's like tucked in the middle of a residential neighborhood You're just kind of driving us oh wait a minute that's Notre Dame Yes, and I'm telling you that campus could not be more gorgeous It really could I actually got actually got to go to a football game there and You want to be talk about my claustrophobia kicking in because you are shoved in there like sardines I know, but it's so much fun I haven't made an official decision yet, but either text a state university or university of Evansville Illinois and Indiana so you both could wind up in Indiana and Gosh, I'm so I hear these kids talking about going to college and where they're going and it just I'm so jealous because you guys get to see this and I want to see it through your eyes because college is such a great thing It is and then you get a little help from from home as well Has it sunk in yet? Not exactly this this whole situation is very surreal.
I'm still trying to accept the fact that this Huge blessing was actually given to me of all people who who applied for this scholarship I still think it's crazy. You're just seeing all the names on the program. I'm thinking only five of us got it Are you going to wake up tomorrow and you're going to see us sit on the dress and you're like do it that habit Definitely is getting framed tonight Outstanding we're going to let you guys go enjoy the evening congratulations because we're getting kind of backed up We want to get everybody chance to talk but go enjoy the evening Thank you.
There's going to be such a blow. It's such cool stuff. You guys get to watch it We have to listen to it so I mean you guys go enjoy it.
Enjoy it for us. Thank you. Congratulations.
All right, Don All right, come on sit down ladies put the headphones on so you can hear yourselves All right, tell us who you are and where you're from all the good stuff. Hi, I'm Cameron Vassilly from Brookner High School Brookner's where in Richardson. All right, and I am Taylor Wedding and I'm from Prince of Peace Christian School Which is Because we got people all over the globe.
So we got to make sure everybody knows what are we doing what what what are we doing there? Sometimes I can't read his writing so Scholarship recipients correct. Mm-hmm.
All right. Where's the money going? College.
Well, yeah, we know with that but what college is the money going to? I will be attending the University of Texas at Austin for a BFA in acting nice and I will be at the Savannah College of Art and Design In production design and that is where Savannah Georgia okay, because there's like five different Savannah And I always picked the wrong one and I'm a big fan of Georgia so but not the college because I'm a four-to-gator fan And you can't like you can't like Jen because okay, so We were just talking a couple of other new young ladies and they were talking about like this whole list of people The moment they say your name What goes through your head It was I honestly had no idea that my name is gonna be called and I was just emotions I was like wow, this is me. Do you just like you're like standing outside your life?
Did that does that they said they said me right? Yeah, I was like that was me Yeah, they're my fair enough There was kind of insane like just having like all of my friends were kind of in the row beside me and have them I turned and like scream was kind of Now with that was that the trigger that made you realize because there's that moment They were like oh they're talking to you You're like, are you sure? Sure because there could be more of the one person same name just saying What productions have you guys been working on?
My school this year did Adam's family in our past big fan musical. I loved it. It was amazing It was super fun my school did grease So did you watch the fox thing and go we did it better?
I mean they're about good Performance is okay. You don't have to be diplomatic I thought you would say some sir No, I'm just shifting position Calm down calm down so Anything else going on before graduation or we at the point now or we're just kind of coasting it in Well, I mean, I'm almost almost school. I have two weeks left.
So not much posting love to do Two more months, but we're doing senior directs, but Other than that pretty much finished. All right. Well congratulations to both of you.

I'm from all seen to fiscal school which is where?
Fort Worth Texas Fort Worth just down the road of peace as the kids like to say Our fifth scholarship recipient again. This whole list of people Like how many people were up for this total because I don't I didn't take it. We didn't get the list a lot like I And I definitely thought there were more, but I didn't realize it was just too So that was Christmas when they're like I'm Sarah Boone.
I was like, I'm sorry. What? Is there another person with my name because if this is gonna be what is Ashton Kutcher?
Am I being parked because you know they said like two people and I was like, oh, okay I might as well just like walk out now and then they said my name and the girl next to me Like taught me on the shoulder and I went I'm Oh, I like got up and I'm trying not to cry because I just put my lashes on for the best actors medley And I'm trying to like keep those on because I just read did my eye makeup for that For you the medley for which production best actors medley and what part are you doing? Janet bandograph from the draws a shot room. Okay, so you get to actions you went something and you Get to perform on that and that stage and being in front of those people It's a beautiful room.
I'm a big fan of music called Daraparks 76 years they've been doing And this is the fifth year for the high school musical awards Where's the money gonna go? I'm going to southwestern university in Georgetown Texas and I'm gonna be a Prima track psych major dance minor hopefully ending up in some sort of neurosurgery or neurology in a pediatric hospital This girl's got more of a plan now As a senior in high school then I do at my age sir and you're a planner. I know that yeah For me I'm like am I gonna get up tomorrow Well my feet hit the ground in the alarm close off.
That's what I'm looking forward I got my menu plan for lunch tomorrow I've always been this way in third grade. I was the one who's like um guys I need to get an aim this class because otherwise I'm not gonna get into college and they're like Sarah This is art You know, okay Everything count that's that's your curricular. I almost bought like an MCAP prep book the other day And I'm like wait hang on that's like four years away or seven This macaroni art needs something to make that first art I just I'd love talking to these winners because they're so excited and the adrenaline slip flowing The estate home tomorrow.
Do you go to school? I have to go to school. I have a government test You know what everybody says that and there's been no one's like you know I'm taking tomorrow off at the third bank But all right Shout out to Ms.
Baldwin gotta be there for you Because she is saying it on the show and it's on it's recorded She is gonna be there for an history test and I have to be there for cum laude and senior praying can oh my gosh Senior but it's the second time in this show we've talked about senior praying I still thought somebody else is talking about senior praying. I still think Boulder High School has the best senior praying thing Was it the thing with the pigs? No, that's the thing with the lightsabers in the courtyard They have a full-on lightsaber fight the higher senior class has a lightsaber fight in the courtyard You used to know about the pig.
Maybe that was the go thing that you were there for the numbers on the end One two and four Because if you're administration you're like you know what respect the moxie You know what I mean like I can't hate on that because that's funny We're gonna let you go enjoy your evening. Please do so congratulations again all right Don what do we got We're holding Come on have a seat Put the put the the headphones on and tell us who you are I'm high there. I'm Jack Durham from Pierce High School.
Jack. How are you? I'm excellent.
Thank you so much for asking Scholarship recipient. Yes, sir. Where's the money going?
Straight to Texas State. Texas State. Yes, sir.
That's a second or third person. We've talked about going down there. I believe so all right Let's talk about Piers JCPers high school.
Okay up there on the on the north side for the people that aren't here local Productions you've been working on that's gotten you to this point Well, I started as a kind of well ink appears in like late Compared to other people I started in sophomore year for beauty and the beast engineers and And I started sophomore year Beauty and for adjpers for beauty and the beast and I've just been like a beauty feeling love with it One of my best friends before in the night Sam Snyder Just really got me into it and one of the things I wrote about on my essay was just like the camaraderie that is at Pierce High School It's really people laugh about it, but we talk about how Pierce High School like theater Is really a fraternity like you'll run around school when you see like the the dudes Let her in theater and they're all football players as well and you just give him a big big high five It's a it's a cool environment. I really enjoy it. I want to see two things right now.
Absolutely number one Another guy that's out dressing me and I'm a little upset about it You've got to get over this inferiority number two Not only is he pulling that off There's no way I can pull that on that is a sharp tuxedo for those of you listening It's got it's like a red velvet thing and it's like black silk lapels that Sir is sharp. Well, this was actually my grandfather's taxi. Oh, look at that Look at that Get out of town That is awesome Great shape for a 50 year old sucks exactly 50 years old 1961 name and Marcus and he's been passing it down What's what's old is new because if I didn't know that I'd have thought he'd just picked it up the other day because these kinds of things are in fashion I know fashionista, but I know that's in fashion Well, this thing's timeless.
I'll tell you what honestly I feel so happy being able to wear it. I feel like I could sleep in something like that. It's a comfortable You know what I mean So what is that felt continuing on fine arts and college?
Yes, sir. I'm a person might be a fan acting outstanding, sir. So how much time's left before before you walk the stage?
Only a couple like maybe like 40-50 days something like that I remember that time where you were just like do this is real like Exactly You and you walk out that last day to hit you just like do it's over. It's done. Yeah, I just dropped the mic on this place.
You know what I mean? For sure, especially like for our last performance of singing on the rain which is musical I was just in for a pure shy school. I really it was really like no other like because our last show was for the DSM judges And I don't know like that's what I'm saying about the camaraderie for everything.
Me, J. Griffin who just wanted a word and that's exciting It's Sam Snyder who made one in a work tonight We just both like we all all three of us just hug each other when we're just trying about everything like we've become so close with all these all these boys in the cast Boys and girls especially, but the boys have been incredibly tight throughout and Yeah, it was an incredible moment how it all started sophomore year, but I feel like it took a week and we're done Well congratulations Thank you so much. Go enjoy the rest of the evening.
Yes, sir. We'll do It's just so I'm so excited for you guys Thank you so I'll enjoy the evening, sir. Yes, sir.
Thank you. You're listening to the clubhouse podcast. We are live backstage in the green room DSM high school musical theater award is the fifth annual of one of these See if we got some updates over here.
