at least dogs gonna be here to review the brand new film directed by Angelina Jolie
Unbroken giant Courtney Garrett headland at a cast of others about Olympian Louis Zam Penini
look at that right yeah I don't jump with the two there's all the blue they just call them
Lou fair enough Lou it is a true story as we've said and Don I'm gonna let you take it from here
tell me about the film okay the film is based off a true story uh Louis am pretty uh Lou it's a
calm just passed away this year he was born in 1917 I do remember hearing about that recently
yes yeah it's the true story of of his trials that he went through and it does a little
flashback in the beginning because you see him he's in the military at the time and he's working
on a bomber crew in World War II in World War II in the Pacific and you see some flashbacks to
him as a kid and to the Olympics and he grew up in a neighborhood where he was Italian and he was
kind of picked on at the time okay a lot of resentment towards the Italians and he was kind of a young
punk till he got in a track and then he was actually able to make the Olympic team and go to
Berlin and he actually raised in the 5,000 meter in the 1936 Olympics oh wow okay all right so he's
actually Olympic athlete there um and he was going to train for Tokyo um which was eventually
cancelled in the 1940 Olympics in Tokyo um then he joins the military and he's on a mission
and they have basically plane trouble in the plane crashes in the middle Pacific and no one knows
where they're at there were two survivors of the crash besides himself um Russell Allen Phillips in
Francis uh McNaira now Russell Allen Phillips was played by who I thought did a good job was played by
Dominole Gleason and he was in the um either Harry Potter one of the Harry Potter movies okay
and then hit the other guy who the Mack who survived also Francis Mack
he was played by Finn Whitrock okay and you know he doesn't know uh and also the winner's tail okay
but Lou you're most of the movie not counting the young Lou and stuff like that it's played by
Jack O'Connell who is just recently in the the new 300 rise of an empire okay all righty so they're
lost at sea and they are lost at sea for 46 days and they're able to basically live off rainwater
when it rained and save it and put in containers in fish that's what they lived off but they
starved they were almost on death's end and unfortunately one of them passes in during the 46 days
okay uh Francis Mack did in real life well what happens is they get off the ocean and they
are basically captured by the Japanese all right so they now he went from the frying pan now to into
the oven into the fire absolutely yeah okay um him and um also um sorry Russell they were in a
concentration camp for a while then they moved them to the big ones in Tokyo and then that's where
they got separated okay from that point on it shows his life which I don't know really say
how long he was in there but I'd guessed me at least a couple years okay okay where there was a
tourmator um a tourmator tourmator who they called the bird okay who is played by uh uh
Takamasha isher hara i've got that said i do not know but he was a Takamasha isher hara that sounds right
okay he was what they called the bird and he was a head of the camp and this guy had it out for
Lou because he saw Lou had a strong will and he said i'm gonna break this guy through hechirhai water
and um basically it shows the torture and basically the living hell that these guys go through
in the camp and it's no surprise that he survives the camp you know because right you know we don't
just die so basically what he deals with after being an almost Olympic hero then going and
serving in the war and what he deals with yeah yeah being in C for 46 days and trying to survive
the concert that the POW camps in Japan okay directed of course everybody knows Angelina Jolie
unless you're from another planet how do you think that her she's directed before this is not the
first time she's ever directed something how do you feel she did directing this film i thought it did
very good the movie is almost like two and a half hours long so i do saw that yeah it's a little over two hours
the movie did not drag i like the look of it it was historically correct that which is a big
thing for me when it go back in time that's something that when we talk about period pieces you're
very very critical of the look of the film does it fit the time it just fit the time there it showed
the the camp shows like their inch of pan it shows the bomb in this going on the look of the film
steam bright um and when things change when they want the bad to worse the look of the film
even changed worse because they took him from the camp to make him work now hauling coal they
off the barge so so visually she kind of matched the mood of what he was going to do to the mood
okay excellent good very very very good written by the co-in brothers exactly so the
pot you know it's basically based off the true story so you know he can't really wave from that too
much but taking from the book by Laura Hillin brand exactly um but basically it falls there are
some variations because i remember seeing the story those three guys on the national geod channel
a couple of years ago and how they survived being that see for 46 days but then talk about the
POW and actually they landed on an island that was occupied by Japan and movie seemed picked up on a boat
okay well there there's always going to be a small artistic you can't really take the script off too much
but they'll look the feel the grit of the movie was very good and i'll tell you
this is not for everybody this film is brutal very dark it's a very dark you're just going to
cringe there are many times i yeah i barely do this in the movie by go oh god no you know in a lot
people you there so it's a lot of people may not like this because of the brutality but it's real life
unfortunately um but it's also a triumph of never give up that spirit of i no matter what it takes
i'm going to get through it you know basically so you thought that the story was well told
you felt that Angelina Jolie's direction was it was it would you say spot on or was there very
get very very good okay i'd say very all right so you enjoyed the look at the film let's talk
about the performances in this film the the biggest star that you can see besides headland would be
gy-courtney who you would know from the last die hard movie playing uh Bruce Willis's son also
will be in the upcoming suicide squad movie like speak that English suicide squad as captain boomerang
but a lot i mean a very big cast yes how did you feel the performance is worth uh jacocano
who plays loo and also i have to give it out to uh dominal gleeson who played you know is the
other guy who survived but that's film they there are some scenes so i got it it's kind of kind
of go back to the the look of the film when it shows him in the camps after a long time and they've
been starving you see skin abones so that reality of them and how they're able just to be
i'm not giving up but my my body's about to give up but my will's not about to give up jacocano
hit it out of the park you're just saying you you got a roof for this guy you you you feel for him
and you see i i can go through this i can go through him recently as colisto from 300 rise of an
empire and i think dominal gleeson's gonna be an episode seven if i'm not mistaken actually and uh
takamasa who played the bird that the head tormentor incredible you wanted just did you know jump
out of the screen and just hit him with the cane back so many times it's not even funny you know but he
hit the police turns up that kind of an emotion yeah he's like the whole quiet guy who's just
i'm gonna torment you i'm gonna hear like what's next what's next oh no he needs to feel for like
what's the cycle can i do now you know but for those performances they shot him out of the park
incredible any criticisms that you would have of the film that's tough i i mean if you don't
it's fun i bet the movie did not drag um it you're really into the movie you didn't feel like
his guitars in 15 minutes and good you know i think maybe at the end they should have showed a
little bit more after you know it showed him landing in the u.s. in the hugging this mama
then it showed a bit the live picture of him hugging this mama at the at the airport there
the real photo after that didn't really do much after the fact you know he just there's some
writing saying how he gave he wanted forgiveness and he actually went back to japan and met with some
of the tormentors after the fact reminiscent of another film we saw earlier except the one guy who
not meet him in real life was the bird really yeah because i he survived i failed in the bird refused
to meet him in real life yeah so part of their culture yeah i i i really can't find two
prisons except i think they should show it a little more after the live they did a little bit
and like you said he wouldn't have one scene he goes i want to go to Tokyo you know i i want to
come to Tokyo is in the Olympics not as a POW but then at the very end you see him running the
flame in japan when they had the Olympics there in agano which he could return to japan
to run in the Olympics holding the torch through this through japan which is really cool
are you surprised it got snubbed by the golden globes because it does seem kind of shocking
that i feel like this would just totally get overlooked well on on i'll see this on the acting
dares
all kind of the very very good but seeing a lot of performances like from korel and uh and jild
hall and some of those other people but we've talked about that in our live shows is the the
fields so it's so deep this year yeah that it's going to be really really hard i think especially
when it comes to the bigger awards it's going to be really really hard to narrow that field down
there's been so many great strong performances this year you look at the Sega wards only have
as you know a best film and there's only five but in the can i wards there's nine or ten and then
you kind of feel like there's a 90 way tie for 11th place so i think there's going to be one i think
you'll get some Oscar nominations possibly for best picture on this um well make a certain
what's to mind no but if we added a top 20 possibly yeah okay okay all right let's get to the final
analysis if you don't mind the way we do the final analysis on this show we don't give you letter
grades thumbs up thumbs down numbers no our empire our audience is better than that so here's how
this works it's a two-prong question question number one is would you see this film again if the
answer is no we're done here if the answer is yes it becomes how would you see this film again
would you pay full price for it would you see it in the twilight a matinee an early morning show
would you wait for it in second run uh would you wait for it on red box or Netflix or would you
wait for it on cable done would you see this film again i will definitely see this film again
because it's kind of that neck of argo where you're on the edge of your seat but you know what's
going to happen okay yeah i'm how far would you be willing to go to see this film again unfortunately
with still a lot of stuff out that i want to see that's coming out i would say HBO but
wrecking me in recommending it to the empire uh twilight at the theaters so do you want them to go
see this in first one yes he didn't first run twilight's filming it reason i can't give it
bullets because this some people will not be able to handle this film okay fair enough yeah anything
else you want to add uh i got to think uh think uh rock for a run and uh for let me see this screaming
