But normally, when we do one of these particular iTunes exclusives, we...
...are gonna review something, and today is no exception.
Today, we are interviewing, interviewing, and we are reviewing.
A movie called The Maze Runner.
Now, Don got to see this courtesy of our friends at Allied Integrated Marketing, which we've been thinking for.
We actually kind of split duties.
I wouldn't saw one movie, and he wouldn't saw another movie.
So that way we could cover him both, because we love the empire that much.
So sir, take it away.
All right, I got the joy of seeing the Maze Runner last night again.
Thanks everybody to Allied and Josh and everybody.
This is kind of one of those futuristic films with some surprises.
It starts off with...
...Dillon O'Brien.
He's the main character named Thomas.
Dillon wakes up kind of with no memory.
He's going up the straight elevator.
He's like me on a Saturday morning in the 20s.
You know, he was in the internship in the 2011 version of Teen Wolf.
Okay.
And all of a sudden, he's in his, like...
...Fence didn't, or you could say, walled in, like...
...living area.
It's like a...
...before electricity, you know, like living in a jungle.
Okay.
Okay.
Kind of like he's on survivor.
And these surrounded by all these guys.
And he's not wondering what's going on here.
Well, as time finds out, I mean, this time goes on.
You kind of figure out what's going on here.
They're surrounded by a big, big, big cement wall,
...which you see into trailers and stuff like that.
And there's a one opening.
Okay.
Now, the Maze as they call it, opens up during the morning.
But at night, it closes and does not open again until the next morning.
So, if you're in the middle of the Maze when night comes or you're just stuck there.
If you go in and enter the Maze, no one has survived the night.
Because at night, are these creatures, which basically kill anybody,
...who stuck in the outer layers of the Maze?
So, what's the point of the Maze?
Well, that, how you get to freedom?
Or that's what they're trying to figure out.
Okay. So, nobody knows.
So, he's had his memory white clean.
Yeah.
He wakes up in his journey.
He doesn't know where he is.
He's with all these other people.
And there's figured out what's going out over time.
Okay.
So, there's people that have been there differently.
Well, yeah.
Once a month, it comes up with a new person.
It's all men.
Okay.
And with supplies.
And he got their own community where they're growing vegetables and they got animals.
And they made their own kind of, you know, like, how do you say, like, you know,
trying to figure the word about where they have their own community and stuff like that,
where they're self-sufficient.
Okay.
Yeah, come in.
But when the person comes up every month, a new person,
there's always some supplies in there to keep them going like some few
and stuff like that.
And so, they're trying to figure out, okay.
What they do during the day is they have people called maze runners.
Everybody has their parts.
And their maze runners go into the maze during the day when it's safe.
And they're trying to scope out and figure out how do we get out of here.
And the thing is, every night, in the middle of the night,
when that big gate closes and they're safe from all the creatures inside all the maze areas,
the maze itself changes.
Okay.
So the walls change automatically.
So even if they had the ability to, like, scope out the maze,
it's not going to matter anyway because it's going to change.
There are some clues to kind of get them in idea what's going on there.
Now, everybody has their part.
It seems unfortunate.
The main leader who's been there front from the beginning.
He was there by the first month by himself is an actor named,
I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, he's the main character.
He was in the, the Butler.
Okay.
He's, his character is all the, he's been there the whole time from the beginning.
Okay.
And then, will, pull term.
He's like the muscle guy.
He's like the kind of, you can say the sheriff, you know, in that town there.
He was like, in the Miller, we're the Miller's, the Chronicles of Narnia.
And basically, everybody kind of has their role.
And the fast kids are the maze runners,
or they're trying to figure out what's going on.
Well, in a nutshell, when the character of Thomas arrives,
over the next couple of days, things change with him.
How's that?
He starts to get some his memory back.
And he was, he actually stuck outside the main safe area,
one night and survived to live to tell about it.
Really?
Yeah.
And that really changed everything, all the dynamics,
I really did not want to give any spoilers.
And we appreciate that.
Yeah.
But the thing is, they're, they already have an idea.
What's going on?
But how do we get out of here?
And basically, they're able to kill most creatures for the first time.
And that gives them some clues and some ideas.
Now, is this based on a series of books or a single,
I do not know off the top of my head?
I don't think it was off a book or anything like that.
The other maze runner that's with him.
It's kind of main characters.
The key, hung, we.
He was the other kind of, then been the mayor's surrender there for a long time.
We had a lot of stuff and knowledge mapped out.
He was in the nine lives of the movie, nine lives of Koi King.
I mean, the series of nine lines of Koi King and also the whispers.
He's not NCIS also in 2003.
So he's one of those Asian actors.
But he's kind of, it is, it is a series of books.
He's a series of books, okay.
And basically, though, they don't know why they're there.
But as time stuff in their vents happen, where things change.
Once Thomas arrived, things start to really open up at that point.
But I don't want to give any more spoilers.
All right, fair enough.
So let's kind of get into the film itself.
Directed by West Ball, not a lot on his resume as a director.
Ruin in 2011, a work in progress and Jacob the movie.
What do you think of his directing in this film?
I kind of like the vision of the thing of what he is trying to produce there.
Because outside the walls, it's two societies.
It's two different worlds.
And how, I liked how what they were trying to make with the society.
You saw how these guys have been here for years.
And they're able to coax this because they have the rules.
They never break the rules, they ever break the rules.
But going into the maze every day, let's try to get out of here and figure out what's going on here.
Okay.
I thought the pacing that he had in this film was really good.
I don't think it really dragged in any part.
I think there's a couple things that kind of got a little bit predictable.
But with his directing,
I did like the story overall because there were a lot of surprises and stuff.
And he figured out stuff over time goes on which stuff he did not see coming.
Does it leave it open for the next book to be done?
Yeah, I was going to, I didn't know if I want to give a spoiler.
But you can just say whether or not.
Yeah, yeah, it leaves an opening.
Because there are four books in this scene.
Okay.
And I think, yeah, this, I, when we left go, there's going to be a sequel.
Not knowing that there's four books.
But I think it kind of left at an area.
It's like, okay, this chapter is finished.
And now we're on to the next chapter here.
Okay.
So let's, let's talk to that again, performances.
A lot of unknown actors for the most part of that.
Anybody that you see with staying power.
I'll say first off, the one that surprised me was William will pull,
Pullter because he's from where the millers.
Do you ever see that one?
You know what, it's on my list and I've never seen it.
He play a kind of plays like the dumb kind of slow kid that you kind of feel sorry for.
And in this one, he's like the sheriff tough guy who doesn't want things to change.
Who's kind of like overbearing.
So it's a different foot character for him.
Of course, a main character, Dylan O'Brien.
He plays the role really good, I thought.
He's one of those guys who's, let's question this.
This is happening.
Why not do the norm?
Let's do something different so we could get out of here.
And his acting ability, I thought, was pretty good for the part there.
The one stand out who I really liked was,
he hung Lee.
He was one of the runners.
He played Minho.
Yeah, he, his character, I love just performance a lot because he's one of the main characters.
But he was a runner during the day.
He's been doing it for a long time.
But him, together with the character Thomas,
they get really get a lot of stuff going.
And I thought his portrayal, his emotions and stuff in certain parts and everything.
They worked good as a team.
I really thought they did.
And one of the ones was, I said the Amul Amine,
who played the, he's kind of in there.
He's not like one of them.
He's not the main character, but he's one of those, you know,
let's say Albee.
Yeah, played Albee.
He did really get to for the consideration.
And one of the one, Blake Cooper.
He kind of plays the young kid who's like you.
Everybody else was older, but he's the young kid who everybody kind of takes in.
He was also in prosper, also in criminal guidance.
I thought his performance was, you know, not really huge standout,
but I did like his, his role in the movie.
I thought the roles were really good on this thing.
I thought they played the roles for the characters very well.
With Will Pulper, it's just kind of really weird seeing him from where
the Miller's to this thing here where he's just kind of,
almost go psycho, he could say.
All right.
Any downsides of the film?
Yeah.
But that being really spoiler free.
With being very spoiled.
Yeah.
I mean, with being very, very spoiler free.
I thought one, a couple parts kind of got predictable,
but there were a ton of surprises in the end.
There was kind of like all of a sudden since he's here,
this stuff changes.
It's like, this kid kind of makes his character,
the main character, kind of like super managed for Thomas.
I thought.
Okay.
Without being spoiler free, and I don't want to give it to me.
I mean, being spoiler free again, being spoiler free,
him kind of being super managed.
Though, I think that was a downfall there.
And also, one of the characters kind of is in the end there.
If you ever watch Parks and Rec, the first Tammy won.
She's in there.
It kind of at the very end and show Paul being in the next parts.
They're also who, it's like, me and friend of those show Andrew Beckham
went to this screening here.
The king of bowling.
The king of bowling.
And he goes, don't.
He goes, what?
You guys, that lady right there.
And he goes, yeah.
That's Tammy won from Parks and Rec.
Yeah.
Anybody, you know, if you're Parks and Rec fatty,
she's Tammy won's in there for kind of a role in more towards the end.
It's kind of sci-fi.
It's what he expected.
It's not going to be the kid, the movie for the kids.
There's some violence.
There are some death and stuff like that.
No, like nudity.
Link would just kind of go to a minimal, but there is a lot of people dying in the film.
So, for the parents out there, keep that in mind.
If you're looking for some adventure, a couple surprises.
You want something.
It's just kind of a futuristic.
Something that'll give you a few jumps in the here and there and something
that kind of makes you think.
This might be a good film for you.
But for date night and something like that on the first date,
probably not unless you're both kind of like action freaks.
I like how a Westball originally pitched the film as the Lord of the Flies meets lost.
And it is kind of like that in a way, but you add some death to it.
Because one thing, I think you're for bringing that up.
When I was watching the film I go, this is at one point ago.
This kind of reminds me of Lord of the Flies where when, you know,
it kind of turns into being two groups at the end there when Thomas arrives.
You know, okay.
After a couple of days when the events happen, it kind of turns into that Lord of the Flies thing.
Okay.
So, good overall.
Do you want some good action stuff like that?
Give it a shot.
I was really looking forward to this film.
And I would say.
I know you were.
Yeah.
And overall, it wasn't really disappointed at all.
I would look kind of happy.
And most of the critics, I think, left happy.
Alright, so let's get to the final analysis.
The way we do the final analysis on the show, if you've just doing this for the first time,
we don't give you thumbs up thumbs down.
We don't give you grades.
We don't give you numbers.
We don't give you stars because our audience, the empire is better than that.
And it's a two-prong question.
Question number one, would you see this film again?
If the answer is no, then we're done here.
If the answer is yes, then the second prong is, how would you see it again?
Would you pay full price?
Would you go to a Twilight show?
Matt Nay, early morning, second run.
Would you wait for it on Blu-ray or DVD?
Would you wait for it on cable?
Now, I will tell you that in certain cities,
there's a new film format that this is being shown in.
If you have a local cinema, we have one up on the north side of town for us.
They're doing XD and panoramic.
Oh, you wait.
So, done.
Would you see this film again?
Well, first off, I got to see it.
And with our great friends from Alight,
and I'm not gonna complain I didn't see it in a panoramic,
but that would be kind of interesting to see it like that.
When I say it again, yeah, I would see it again.
Okay.
So, how would you see it again?
Me personally, I'm kind of in stuff like this sometimes.
I would probably do for me Twilight,
and I would probably recommend it as a Twilight
for these people looking for something futuristic.
You want to love a story and kind of happen.
You know, so that's like the hunger game.
Yeah, exactly.
So,
for people who want something kind of,
something weird,
some action, something like that.
I'd recommend it as a Twilight.
Okay.
Now, if you were to see it again,
how would you see it?
I said Twilight.
Okay.
So, the same recommendation for the Empire that you have.
Exactly.
But it would be kind of interesting to see
in a panoramic trial with Twilight.
That would really, that way, I think,
really, that way.
I saw a feature on the news on what's kind of cool.
Yeah.
Also, this is iTunes exclusive.
Number 50.

50.
We've reached the 50 mark in 13 months.
