My name is Rob and next year is my 25th high school reunion
But I'm not alone for this particular episode as I rarely am joining me across the desk is the official fat checker of this show
And a man who has written a train at least once in his time you may know him is done for you as fun done go actually
But his mom will call him done for I'm gonna call him done for the welcome sir. My grandpa my uncle my aunt will work for the railroad
That's true. You talked about that for him. Yeah, I made nothing on my 20-year class reunion
I missed it because something else was going on a Jimmy Buffet concert. Oh, yeah

Here's Jimmy Buffet. You have to have exactly
We are here today to talk about the new film
From guys that are normally screenwriters, but they're taking their first stab at directing and your mogul and Jared Paul direct a new movie called the Detroit Jack Black James Mars and Catherine Han Jeffrey Tambor
Just a couple of a few other names in this film
Basically, it is the story of Dan Lansman. Dan is a guy who lives in suburban Pittsburgh
The Burke, or he grew up exactly as the self-appointed chairman of the alumni committee and their 20-year high school reunion is upon them
They're having some problems recruiting people to come to commit. Yeah, to commit to the reunion
So Dan who's played by Jack Black is sitting up late one night watching TV and he sees this commercial for banana boat skin care products
And in this commercial is a guy by the name of Oliver Wallace who was the cool guy when they were in high school played by the great James Marsden Cyclops Cyclops
And so Dan decides he's going to take it upon himself to go out and get Oliver Wallace to come to the reunion because if Wallace comes then everybody else will come
So he kind of doops his boss at work played by the great Jeffrey Tambor and to turn it into a fake business trip except
Tambor doesn't know that it's a fake business trip. Who's really frugal in this business and things go from there?
This movie is just a little bit over an hour and a half long
Before we get yes, sir, you know this is number 99 this is number number 99 99 99 almost to the three digits. Hey, we got to think our good friends at allied integrative who are responsible for chunk of us
Go say how you know first up Josh ally everybody allied how many of these 99's have been from allied you know what I haven't done the math, but there's a chunk of them
But we can't think of enough for this absolutely so let's get into reviewing this thing. Let's go for it for me
I'm just gonna I'm not even gonna bury the lead here. This is the very definition of a dark comedy
And what I mean by that for those you don't know what the dark comedy genre is you spend a lot of time laughing at things and going why am I laughing at this?
Which some dark comedy I'm a fan of
But there's also that style of dark comedy that really goes out of its way to make you uncomfortable like a lot of what your Ricky Jervais does
That's that's his style
Which really I'm very torn on this
But Donald deferred you because I don't want to get too deep for you. Yeah, yeah

Into barely two. Let's just get this out to you open
I in the first ten minutes hated this film
I was not liking it after the
It just didn't this is kind of when those stupid jack black this ain't working kind of thing
But then later as a movie
We got it going it hit a lot of subplots that you never saw coming
And there's a lot of issues that were touched because we got to be spoiler free here for the exactly that's that's what our audience
But there was one big one that you that hit you about halfway through that you never saw coming and some levels didn't need to see exactly
But you know, I put in the written review the the Russian nesting dolls
How it's one layer after another that you didn't see coming and you never wouldn't know what the next layer is going to be
They hit a lot of really really really tough issues
With some very uncomfortable moments in this thing some very real uncomfortable moments in this thing
But I think they hit it right on that aspect
So on some aspects as the dark comedy
I really hated it, but I loved how they hit some issues that a lot movies don't go into or are afraid to talk about and then way they hit the issues with the uncomfortable moments
Which could happen in real life
I saw it differently than you did. Okay. I don't know that that it was needed for the plot
I think that the the uncomfortableness that we're referring to
Was reference too much. I think it was just it was too much of it
I think it it turned Dan from being a lovable loser. Yeah, to being just pitiful
Yeah, and go ahead. I didn't care about him and that was part of my problem
I just didn't care by the end of the film for a character that I was supposed to maybe have pity on I had nothing at all
But it shows like how he what he goes through to try to be accepted. I think it really hit that
You know
Being an odd man out and being chandelot and stuff. I really like how it hit those parts of the movie
You know what I'm saying?
Does that make sense?

I don't know because I'm very very torn on this film because I spent a lot of this film
Very uncomfortable, but that was what they were going for so on a certain level
They hit the mark. Yeah, you know that they accomplished what they set out to do
But I don't know that that makes it a good film. You know what I mean? Yeah, I kind of liked it
You know, you usually listen to a couple of moments like whoa, but I think they used them right in my opinion on this, you know, it teach their own

Seeing him I was really conflicted on his character because you're used to seeing as the goofy guy
I liked him in Kung Fu Panda
Don't get me wrong that I'd like the voice over and I think it kind of hit that character
You know, pretty good considering
But on the other aspect he him getting into these real serious dark issues and him getting almost to the borderline psychotic on this thing
I mean he starts to lose it, you know, and that's why I'm so conflicted on it
Some parts of it. I really hated some parts of it. I liked I'm just don't know. It's really hard to explain on this one
I thought it was directed well. I mean, I thought that visually I thought that the
It was fine is what it did what it was supposed to do
Exactly. You didn't even know the CGI or anything like that, you know, but it was fine for what it was
Some of the songs were good, but during the class for union
They're playing stuff from the early 80s. They'd be playing stuff from 88 to 94
Right. Well 94 would have been when they graduated
Yeah exactly. It's actually a kind of reunion. They play the voice
But yeah, but you know, but I think it's but the music was good. I love the music selection in that
But I mean if you graduated in 94, that means you were a freshman. I was a senior
So you would you would know the music they were playing
Yeah, but yeah, but but on acting though
The one I have to kind of give the shining star to was the guy who played dance son
Russell Posner plays that
And Dan has to do with his own family issues as well having a wife and two kids one of them
Getting his first girlfriend and all the things that go with that. He's looking for the dad advice and stuff
And he's getting just a cold shoulder from his dad
And he's getting more advice from you know from all of her on this
And I like how he was able to get that emotion out of like I am so confused here
Uh, dad. I need help. Okay. All of her. I need help. But I thought that kid who's going through that
You know the teenage years, the puberty, the home morons, all that stuff
Just wanting some answers or some advice
And not getting it. I thought he played that kind of emotion very well
Because he's like, I'm a little bit willard here. You know, I thought for somebody's
I just thought he hit it very good for that kind of role
I thought the cast overall was very even killed. I don't know if there's anybody that pulled away from anybody
I'll jack black as who you expect them to be
Tom Burr. I mean he played that perfect. That's but you expect those kind of roles from him
He would. Yeah. Yeah. Every team. Jumping tambour plays the role very well
Yeah. Mars then playing the cool guy. I mean he does that well.
Yeah. There wasn't anything that really stood out for me performance
Well, I see her. I thought everybody was good. Yeah. But again, they did their job
Because I think with me they accomplished what they were trying to accomplish
You're going to make your audience a little squeamish
And you're going to make them try to work with something
They're going to make them squeamish on us
But I thought somebody's in positive
Just stuck out for me. I thought he played it really well
He gets my shining star in this one though
There enough
But you know, it's just one of those weird films where it's kind of
There's a lot of things that you hate and there's some really good stuff that you like
But how do you review something like that? And that's where I'm torn because
On one hand I was like I a lot of the film I just had anxiety
But that's what they were trying to do
So
Do you hang the mission accomplished banner?
It's such a weird kind of a phenomenal
You're saying how you know the co-host Chad would probably
You know because they hit some a real emotional things here
And he's also not a jack black thing
Oh, we know that. Yeah, so
I think it can make this film worse for him as if they had a well-ferred horn swag
Oh, but I mean you know
But I
I like how I hit some issues even though it's uncomfortable
I think then comfortable hit was right for what they were trying to talk about in this
Mm-hmm
It's interesting. This one's just kind of one of those but again. That's where I'm torn. Yeah, you know
It's it's such a strange thing
This is a this is a tough film to critique exactly
But that's where the pants the big bucks
That's a pain. Yeah, but you know that's where they have to come these things and what's again?
We allied. They're so good. They've been there and they've ever had to be.

There are such incredible people we cannot think of enough for over basically the last two years almost almost

We don't give you letter grade. We don't give you numbers. We don't give you stars
We don't give you thumbs up thumbs down our audience the empire
Better than that
We're gonna ask two questions. Question number one is would you see this film again
If the answer is no we're done here
If the answer is yes
It becomes how would you see this film again?
Would you pay for it in first run evening show
Twilight after noon early morning on a Saturday
Would you wait till it goes in the second run at the dollar theater?
Would you get it from red box?
Would you stream it on Netflix or would you wait for it on TV?
Would you see this film again? Actually I would.

How would you see it?
I would probably watch on HBO but I'm gonna give the recommend to
the second run dollar theaters because I'm so mixed on it
Because I loved it and I hated it
So I think it's worth you know
It's a movie night and you don't want to spend a lot of cash
And it's at the dollar theater hit it there
Because it has some moments to really just hate you which I really enjoyed
But a lot of it at the first 10-15 minutes I rarely wasn't like in it
But then it kind of crept up on me
I'm gonna do something in my rating on this that I've never done before
Okay, I'm waiting
I would not see this film again
Okay
But I wouldn't stop somebody who's a fan of the genre from seeing it
So I'm actually gonna answer the second question
Even though I don't want to have to answer the second question
I personally would not watch this again
But I have a lot of people that I know that are into that style of comedy
I think could appreciate this film for what it is
Especially the strength of the actors involved
You are a fan of dark comedies
I would say go check it out
It might be worth a red box
You know
I give a second right
But this film is not for a mass audience
I don't need it
Oh no
But yeah, I don't think it's near worth getting the full price theater at all
So, you know
