closest I think I've ever been to Hawaii is watching Magnum PI but I am not alone for
this particular episode joining me across the desk as he tends to do is a man who
has seen many paradise's most of them not tropical he is my co-host he is Chad
welcome sir I've seen a handful I have seen Barbados I've been to Barbados but not
this particular one not just particularly I've never been to that but the other
man in the studio who is the official fact checker of this show has been to Hawaii as
evident from his written review at the clubhouse podcast.com which is our website you
may know MS fund Don Go but his mom and name him Don Ford I'm gonna call him Don
Ford welcome sir. I got the joy to go there when I was 12 and it was a
crowd-look experience Pearl Harbor. It's definitely on my Hawaii is on my list by
the way that's our website. Whatever we do one of these episodes but our
105th by the way it's to review something and this particular selection is no
different. Today we are here to review the new film from one of my favorite
writer director producers of all time his name is Cameron Crow the film is called
Aloha. Before we get we got to thank our newest friend of the show we got to
thank Ashton and everybody at Baroque and so on oh yes our new friends whom we
love so much yeah thank you so much Ashton for letting us come to this thing and
we can't appreciate what you for us it's just incredible thank you so more than
they ever have to do exactly thank you Ashton. So here's the deal Brian Gilcrest
played by Bradley Cooper is on his way to Hawaii. He is a former military
Air Force man who is a civilian contractor now working for a billionaire named
Carson Welch played by Bill Murray and it is his job to convince the local
government to let Murray's company launch a satellite that will hover over
Hawaii. I would say it's more get the tribal permission. Well they're the locals there.
Yeah okay yeah you talk about the king is the king. Oh yeah okay. He has he has
influence in the community. When he arrives he is automatically given a guide by
the name of Captain Allison in played by Emma Stone. He is also meeting up at
the same time with his ex-girlfriend for many years before Tracy Woodside played
by Rachel McAdams who was currently married to the guy that flew him in. John
Woody Woodside played by John Krasinski. It's not like I'm making up actors to
put these like this is really the cast for this. Yeah you got some big and
time names in this one. You know other names like Danny McBride and Alec Baldwin
are in this film. It's it's star-studded. It's about an hour and 45 minutes long.
It's Cameron Crow. So why don't we start there Chad direction in story because he
wrote stories well. Gosh I'm I'm with you on Crow. I'm a long time fan of
Cameron Crow. Been a fan since 89. Say anything is one of my favorite movies in the
history of Ed Burke. Oh you've been a fan longer than that just not as a director.
Well yeah because he also wrote fast times of original. Exactly and I know.
Well, fast times was based on the story he wrote for Rolling Stone magazine.
Uh-huh. Which was an inspiration for another favorite film. It's called the most famous.
It's time at Rolling Stone. It all just works around. One of the guys that I think
just gets it. Now there there have been times where the work that he's put into a film
just didn't quite connect with with me. And after almost famous he kind of kind of
seemed to drop off a little bit. From a writing standpoint I would agree with you but he
did some really good music documents. Like he did the Pro Jim 20 documentary. Well I'm
just talking about stuff in a narrative right. No I got but luckily for me and as I said
this in my written review which is at www.theclubhouse.com. Which is our website. His hits
out way is Mrs. Oh out. Yeah without a doubt. Even did that thing with Alison Chains too. Yes he did.
Yeah. So I was I was really looking forward to this. I was looking for him to
kind of return to form because again after almost famous you know after films like
we bought a zoo. That was a decade and a half ago. Exactly my point. After we bought a zoo
and a vanilla sky. Oh dear. And Elizabeth Town he was kind of getting it closer to what
we're accustomed to. About of those three Elizabeth Town wins. Yeah that's the lesser of three
evils. But I still wouldn't call that film the lesser of three evils. It just wasn't up to his
part. If you want to put it that way and I was expecting or at least hoping for something that
was going to be closer to the lines of almost famous and Jerry McGuire and one of Don's
favorite film singles. Yes you know stuff that would give you something to remember. He has an
incredible neck for creating an iconic moment. A double dog dare you to listen to Peter Gabriel's
and your eyes and not see John Q's that standing on with a boombox over his head. I'm usually doing
that myself. Yeah it comes on. Or to hear secret garden and not say the words you had me. Yeah you
had me alone. You have pleat me or a double dog dare you to hear tiny dancer. We're Jerry McGuire
and not in. We would just talk about Jerry McGuire. Yeah but I'm saying I mean that
I'll tell you you're never mind. You could plead me what's Jerry McGuire. Yeah yeah that's
one. Or hear tiny dancer and not in vision. You know a bunch of people. So you could
love us. Yeah along to never having a fight. But it's I was I was waiting for something like that
and this seems to be closer to a film like that rather than the past couple of days. Okay,
Don. Like you said earlier, singles is my favorite film by him and it's all you know perspective
of which you know everybody has their favorite by him but that is one of my top 10 films of the year.
I mean in my lifetime it's literally and sorry said the year. Well if you was 1992 yeah but
this film had that field of camera crow again which I put my written via the club us podcast.com.
That's our website and you just had that touch the music. Everything just kind of flow through where
if you know his stuff you know this is crow. You know versus like vanilla sky which is
totally different but like you know you're saying Chad I think that really starting to fill
and to that realm of everything like that. Now on this direction in the in of course the
it's Hawaii for the past. If you don't know what scenery but you didn't even think special for that
look because Hawaii doesn't it's simple enough but and Oregon I might want to segue a little
bit into the storyline I just thought it kind of started a little bit slower than normal you know
I thought it could have picked up a little bit further in the beginning the last half of the
movie I loved. What's what's yeah I know what's put a pin in there because I need to give my
opinions first. With Cameron Crow I agree with Chad one thing that he does well are those moments
and visually for me I never was taken out of the story he was able to use the island itself as a
character which was kind of interesting where it's kind of you know they talk about the spirits
on the island and how there's a scene where they're going to see the guy that's called the king
and they can't get in because they're barricaded out so that the spirits kind of make them take
the walking route together and to start to talk to each other being Bradley Cooper and
Emma Stone's characters I think the way he told that story there's always layers to what
Cameron Crow does and when he does it well his dialogue always works well for me because there's
an there's an organicness to it and that seems with no dialogue exactly and he knows how to weave a
story I mean that's been a stab I think our reviews are going to be eerily similar even though none of
us saw what we were writing because what you what you guys are saying is pretty much close to what I wrote
so as Dom was said going into the storyline itself for me I can't decide whether it's the beginning
of the script or it's the beginning of the performances that got one key for me the first 2015 to
20 minutes I was a little concerned because again I am a huge Cameron Crow fan huge I could watch
say anything on a loop which Chad hopefully got to revisit not yet oh so on I'm getting caught up
on arrow so no give me that it is I own the sound track to say anything on two different formats
and it's now in my iPod for me it just took a little while for this and it gets feet under it
once it got its feet under it yeah it was a gorgeously told tale but that first 15 to 20 minutes
I might come on Cameron this needs to be more say anything and less vanilla sky man you've got
to help me out here I thought the first five ten minutes were fine but then it waked for about a
good half hour did it for some yeah the last a part of this makes me wonder because I was doing
some research on this film and I saw that it ran into a couple of stumbling blocks you know like
maybe that's some of the scars that this film bears because number one Jay Barrishel was in the
cast of this thing from the get go had no idea and he is nowhere in sight now I don't know if he
was replaced or if his character was just completely excised from the script so that's problem
number one problem number two this originally had a Christmas day release date so when you were
used stumble and fall that far from your target release date there's obviously some issues here
and I don't know if it was all because of the Barrishel incident or something else happened and maybe
the the the the the flaws that you're seeing might be the scars of the problems that this
production went through because of that I don't know it to me it I never really felt a lag in it
it just it felt it it it float organically to me on the backdrop there's a lot of
back-lying issues in this film and it takes a long time for them to surface but once they do especially
the last half of the film because that's why I really love because these underlying issues that you
don't know but once they reveal them it really kicked the kick the film in the high gear which I loved
that it just took too long to build a net one part I thought and I really felt that there's a
little bit of foreshadowing in the very beginning of the film that I thought they could have
buried a little bit and we can talk about that out there because I don't want to give anything away
but there's a moment in the beginning where you go wow we're gonna just throw that out there now
but there is a payoff to it oh yes the very the very last scene in the film is nothing short
of brilliant and that's all I'm willing to say about it could be one of those Hollywood moments
literally and it just if you can pull off a scene like that without dialogue it just makes it even
better because you rely on the actors involved to really convey what you're trying to do
speaking of the actors involved you know what you're gonna get with these guys with your top
eight actors and that's that's really weird to say your top eight actors on the bill you know what
you're gonna get I mean Bradley Cooper been a huge fan since he was on alias
am a stone how you doing zombie land there's a lot of things that she's done yeah but that's
my favorite her also worked with Bill Murray on that one yeah and we're gonna get to something
else Bill Murray cross reference that I don't think even you caught Don so it's such that I didn't
catch it until the other night Rachel McAdams huge fan she was she's always amazing looks great
in the film Bill Murray's Bill Murray what have I said about Bill Murray genius the older he gets
the funnier he gets which I didn't think was possible John Krasinski huge fan from the office
and it was good to see him play a role where he wasn't just this good nice happy guy like
where he's kind of a bit of an ove well kind of like Jim in the later years of the office is
what he would I wouldn't compare this to Jim I could later the later seasons of the office
weren't he's trying to get the job and all that I disagree I disagree on that Danny McBride was
a little weird for me because I'm a huge fan of Danny McBride but to hear somebody call him
Colonel I just don't see him as I know it's every office starts 80 stranger than calling him
a stone major she was a captain I thought I thought they called her major Alec Baldwin he's
Alec Baldwin he's in the film for like 10 minutes and he almost steals the whole dog on
thing he definitely see that just what and then there's a one the very scene at the very
beginning of the trailer is very close to the end of the film where because I love that moment
it's like I remember the good times they were no good times like that's the very first scene
of the trailer and I kept waiting for that moment and you wait for that moment almost the entire
film but Jaden Leber her Leber played the Rachel McAdams son Mitchell did you recognize him
done don't look it up no he was on because I did the thing on this I know I know he was in
St. Vincent was the Murray yeah which I did which until Chad pointed I was like that is the kid
from St. Vincent I mean your your top stars you're going to get what you get with them because
they're great and they did they did not disappoint now one thing I want to add two quick
things is my shining star of the non lead roles which I put in my written view at the
that's our website was Daniel Rose Russell that's as great yeah she this was like her second film
yes and she hit it out of the park totally for being as inexperienced compared to these other
actors that she is she did incredible on this and the thing one thing I love the only other film she
did was the Liam Neesons film I walk among the tombstones exactly and so with her inexperienced she
hit it out of the park she crushed it and one thing about the plot which I really liked was the comedy
I want to call this a comedy but it had some good comedy at the right moment set the right time
you could call it a this is what they liked it for a first you as a dromedy
dromedy yeah but I think the comedy was put in there at the right moment set the right time
which fit it perfectly like Baldwin I was rolling on his little rant which was incredible
I like Baldwin with his just awesome like he's he's just awesome for me I agree with you Daniel
Rose Russell crushed this thing and you got to think the moment Cameron Crow saw her and he
had to have already cast Rachel McAdams and he had to go yeah you can play her daughter
we're getting this yeah he had to have done a dance and it's kind of scary the chemistry
amongst the cast I thought was amazing but you know what you get with these guys and they
they hit it but even even some of the most seasoned actors there's certain people they just don't
have chemistry with there wasn't that problem in this film everybody worked really well together
and you genuinely cared about these people now there were times where maybe your feelings about
you know Bradley Cooper's character may have wobbled on one side of the fence or the other
but even though even thus lead just like the story though and I still can't decide if it's the
story or just the actors getting used to their roles the acting was a little lunky for me
and the beginning of this thing like Emma Stone seemed a little too over the top and her role
but once things got rolling it was like she settled into the park she to me she just kind of
she kind of struck me as a as a fan girl that was just falling over Bradley Cooper's character
I kind of disagree because I thought when I saw her she plays that militant lady the hardline
very formal by the book kind of girl but she exactly but then when she gets to know what she
lets the guard down but which is not your character's a quarter Hawaiian yeah I never got that
but even when you think about it though she she says it about a hundred times but she thought
really lets it go she went she opened it up but I there are people who are like that who are
just so you know yeah I just I thought that her acting was a little bit
more than she should have given in the beginning so once for you yeah yeah but for me it was it was
kind of like once she settled into the role things flowed a lot better for me and that's what
something I can't decide if it was a little bit of lunginess out of the gate from the script or
the performances but by the time the credits rolled I was a happy camp counselor anything else you
guys want to add about this um for some it's like Ashley again from Morocco thank you for inviting
to this thing thank you so much and you will want to own the soundtrack that's what I was going to
say you will want to own the soundtrack once once again and and I put on the written review as well
that um where's that uh don't suck me into this because I screwed it up every time
just to say the name of the website www to the club as podcast on that's our website see that's
how we work this I only want to mention the website because y'all put me in a corner every
freaking time I try to bring it up that crow isn't a very elite company of directors that can
take a song or the soundtrack as a whole and make it a color or a paintbrush that he uses to
create his art with um the he um like the examples I gave were John Hughes
Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith to where they take a soundtrack and weave it into the fabric of
their film and it makes the film better because of it and I'm not talking to score like a John Williams
score songs that you can immediately associate with a scene or a just a moment or a shot
to where it will again I go back to Peter Gabriel in your eyes a double dog dare you to hear
that song and not see that moment in your head. And one of my all time favorite songs is uh
closed answer of crown of thorns off the single soundtrack which by mother love bone it that one
is one of my favorite songs of all time and it made that movie just like I agree with say anything
I agree with that too and there's not a bad song on that entire soundtrack. Oh not at all
much like the one you're hearing in the background currently. I remember whenever the the party
dancing started and the first thing you hear is a get-bance outstanding and I looked over you
and both of us are just bobbin our heads up and down. I do love that song and then Alec Baldwin
comes in and requests his song and we're like ah I love that moment I just crow has a
an ability to create moments like that and that wasn't the only moment in that scene
because Bradley Cooper has a scene has a scene with a character away from the party but during the
party and then a song gets played that ties in with that conversation. It's one of those moments where
if you know if you really really pay attention what's going on you go well played sir. It's
again I just I leaned over to you and went that's genius dude. I said camera croaking do this like
very few people can and that's what I love about the man. He has become kind of the soundtrack
of the the lives of the gen Xers. I will not debate that and it's good to see him bring it back
around again because I just didn't get the emotional connection from the past films since almost
famous that I got with this. All right so we get to the final analysis but to do let's do it.
Though we do the final analysis on this show we don't give you thumbs up thumbs down we don't
give you stars we don't give you rating like grades or a one to ten scale or audience the
empire is better than that. The way we rate a film is simple what's a two question process.
Question number one is would you see this film again if the answer is no but we're done here.
If the answer is yes then it goes how far would be would you be willing to go to see this film?
Would you pay full price and a theater? Would you go to a matinee? Would you see it twilight?
Would you see it early morning? Would you wait for it and second run at the dollar theater?
Would you look for it on red box? Would you stream it on Netflix? Would you watch it on cable?
Done we'll start with you. Would you watch this film again? Oh definitely. How far would you be
willing to go? I'd be willing to do something like a matinee at the theaters. I can't do the full
price theaters because I just thought like we said earlier about being too slow moving in the
beginning but this movie is perfect for a date night flick. You know you want that first date
second date or take the wife out just you and her this is the perfect film for that.
Chad would you see this film again? Yes absolutely. How far do you want to go?
Same as done. You know more of a more of a low-key date kind of thing. You really don't need a
an IMAX price point you know to enjoy a film like this. I would see this film again
but I'd rather see it in an evening show just because to me this is a dinner and a movie in that order
film. It is a breath of fresh air and a summer of shoot them up blow them up kill them up films
which I thought I thought a summer release was a little odd for it but it kind of works
into that you know you're seeing Hawaii in the summertime and all that good stuff. I won't say
Cameron grows back on top but brother he's climbing that mountain and this is another thing that
I thought kind of got kicked up that kind of puzzles me or concerns me is that this film has
gotten a lot of criticism from Hawaiians that they feel like they didn't insulted their culture
or their people or their land. I'm like aren't you kind of missing the point here that was kind of
the point that the film was trying to make that the military was attempting to take advantage of the
people and its land and that's where the whole conflict the internal conflict that Bradley Cooper
goes through which is also kind of different for Cameron Crow to to do a film with
social and political statement and he did it well I thought I think he did and I just I don't
understand where the where the backlash is coming from because it's widespread I mean it's but we're
also not we may not know enough about that culture to understand maybe not you know maybe not but
you know just it didn't look like it was they was trying to slight anybody I don't think it was either
I agree with you if there was any misunderstanding there I think it was a complete
misunderstanding you know it was not intentional you never gonna make everybody happy all the time no no
