The following is a sooner or greater production. No one's, no one's, no one's. Good morning!
Yo, stop. Are you ready for the jam? I said are you ready for the jam?
Yo, jeep. Kick it. Run with the plea.
Oh goodness gracious. It's iTunes exclusive time. If you were hearing my voice right now it means you subscribe to the Clubhouse podcast on iTunes which we greatly appreciate because it is time now for us to do the Dallas International Film Festival DFS Honors Post Show.
We're going to have a lot of guests coming through that are going to be helping us out and getting some great interviews. My name is Rob of course you know that because you subscribe to the show but I have to introduce myself again because God knows nobody else will. Sitting next to me who is we are live at the Dallas International Film Festival's Media Lounge is my co-host.
I'm afraid out the music because we're not going to need it because my iPod is going to die. And he is a man that has now watched the Star Wars Episode 7 trailer about 900 times in the last five hours. He is jam.
And I will watch it 900 more before I go to sleep. I'm not saying you won't, I'm not saying I'm just saying. I think you hear me.
You hear me not going anything I'm coming in and I bring a stormtrooper up with me. Also joining us across from him is the official fact checker of this show. And a man who is getting his cardio workout tonight brother.
You may know him is fun, don't go but his mom I name him Don Ford. I'm going to call him Don Ford. Hello sir.
I think I'm on my sixth red bull right now. You're going to want to up into Cardiac. I'm going to say if you're not one one you got to help us tear down the equipment.
Don't get too crazy on it. Also joining us. Friend of the show Gary Murray from ceiling film.
Thank you very much. And on my second Stella. Ah, Stella R2Wa a fine sponsor of the Dallas International Film Festival.
Hey, sponsor every year. Let's hear for Stella. Yay.
And in front of the show. And in front of the happy. For another show John Doc Houser a huge fan of Stella R2Wa.
So he'd very, very happy with that. Our friend Devon Pike is hosting karaoke as we speak. And we're just last year he was kind of around the corner on the other side of the room.
They're right. This year there's nothing but air and opportunity. Exactly.
Between us and him. And he just showed the episode seven trailer on his TV over there. And you can hear a pin drop in this room.
Everybody was completely focused on it. Which I love. The media lounge here is open to one in the morning tonight.
And tomorrow will be the last day for the media lounge because it will not be open on Sunday. So let's talk a little bit about the Dallas International Film Festival. Over 160 films have been screened in the last one.
It's been nine days. Yeah. Nine days.
So Gary any highlights for you? I saw Raiders. Wonderful.
Loved, loved, loved Raiders. I hope it gets distributed. I hope it gets a bigger release.
It deserves it. But the one I really saw that I just can't wait to see again. I Facebooked it yesterday that everybody needs to make a note to go see it.
It's me and James and the dying girl. Yeah, that was last night, wasn't it? That was last night.
It's me and Earl and the dying girl. Me and Earl and the dying girl. Yeah, I saw that too at the centerpiece screening last night.
Sorry. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry. If it doesn't make you laugh and cry, you're a communist.
Wow. Don't face the communist. It is a tough film to watch at parts.
It is like, okay. It's about a kid who makes movies. Okay.
Okay. I was a kid who made movies. Fair enough.
It was about a kid who made animated movies. I made animated movies. And I'm watching this and I'm going, I can so relate to this kid.
Very nice. I can so relate to what's going on with him. I did not have anybody die like that when I was in high school.
Which is not a spoiler alert because it's in the title of the film. Yeah, I said that. It's dying girl.
Right, right, right. Yeah, it was, it was a tough film to watch. And where was it filmed?
In Pittsburgh. Of course Don has to throw the bird out there. Yeah.
It was, it was filmed down there in Pittsburgh. And it made Pittsburgh look beautiful. And there's some shots that being carried, I've actually walked.
I have filmed. Like outside the ballpark, we've actually, me here have been there. You know?
So, yeah, it's, it's, it will make you laugh. Well, I, I didn't cry. I got close to Christ.
That's good and close to there enough. You know, Raiders has been, that was incredible. Which we talked about.
Mm hmm. My favorite is still Thunder under. A heaven broke.
Thunder broke the heavens. Thunder broke the heavens. Yeah, that one.
And we had Mr. Beard on earlier tonight. We did.
He was a great guest. Great guy. But that, that's my favorite of the film of the whole festival so far.
For me. I think every film that I've watched so far, I've enjoyed. My favorite of the festival right now has to be Bad Kid Begins.
And I think there's probably a bias there. Yeah. But an amazing documentary about, about Bad Kid from last November.
It's going to get a theatrical release at the end of June from what we're reading online. So we're very excited for the filmmakers there. We're at the media lounge, which is on the ninth floor of the Highland Hotel in Dallas.
We actually have a beautiful view behind us of the SMU campus. The DFB's honors currently going on on the second floor of this hotel. So unlike last year, where they were at a completely different facility and then came to the media lounge, they're all in the same building this year, which is great because it's raining outside.
So we don't have to worry about people. I don't want to go over there because I don't want to deal with the rain. You're already in the building.
Exactly. So. And John Landis being honored this evening.
Yeah. John Landis. They had the cop car outside.
Yeah. Yeah. The Blues Mobile was outside when we pulled up.
Beautiful facility. A lot of great people. I am now hearing the number one karaoke whip of all time, sir.
Yes. Love. Love shack is happening.
So let's get that out of the way now. I want to Freddy Watson is going to show up and sing on the karaoke. I would I would fall out of the chair.
I'm not kidding you. Oh no. It'd be great to Stewart Copeland.
Stewart Copeland, who was actually at the festival last night. He's here tonight. I forgot to tell you about that.
I saw Stewart Copeland last night. Really? Yeah.
He has a documentary here. It's a documentary, right? Yeah.
Where he works with a group of high school percussionists. For those of you that don't know who Stewart Copeland is, he is the drummer for the band, the police. Still.
And guy has aged a day in the last 15 years. Amazing. Yeah.
Another big celebrity that was in here last night was Fred Acres. Yes. Coach Fred Acres.
Yeah. I think I saw him. Yeah.
I didn't say for the Q and A because it was getting late and I had to get home. But from the Lone Star Holy War, the documentary about the rivalry between the University of Texas and Texas A and the British. Which I saw, which was very good.
I saw the night before I did. I saw it last night. And I think we're going to be getting someone from that movie on a little bit later.
Hey. That would be great. Yeah.
All right. I will take the trailer in. I guess for him.
So he knows who we're going to get and who we're not. So speaking of that, I think it's time for me to get to work. All right.
Do you know that. Thank you. As I remember, I will be back.
Be careful brother. The big news of the day, of course. The star wars the force awakens.
She's her number two hitting yesterday. We were hoping to get Marcus Blake from that nerd show on to talk about it. Maybe he'll come up later.
He may be downstairs right now. I'm sure we can go to the end of being you know talked into oh, I'm sure we're discussing this more than multiple times I I'm spent when it comes to that. I'm literally spent when it comes to this trailer because it's I haven't been disexcited much less for a Star Wars movie and a long long time.
I'm actually watching it again right now I've watched it more times since you saw me at five o'clock that I've watched it and I watched it first So yesterday I found the one you were talking about where they've combined yeah There's a guy on YouTube that has actually combined both teasers together into one long trailer Wow, it's a he did a great job on it. It looks really cool So so when are we getting a special Lucas edition of it? Lucas Lucas can stay away from this and Something Chad and I were talking about on the way here tonight You know because you know JJ's not doing episode eight He is gonna come back for episode nine, but he's not gonna do episode eight and my thought process there is I wonder if he feels he's gonna be kind of Basically just putting it all out there now and doesn't want to have to follow it The guy that directed Looper will be directing episode eight.
Yeah, and so maybe he'll come back for nine to wrap it up And maybe he just feels like he's just like he's gonna blow the lot now. Yeah, or maybe he's got the whole thing, you know Splotted out all the way through nine got the whole thing set up and he goes I've got all these other commitments I'll let him do eight All my commitments will be done then I'll do nine which would be it's also possible. I mean JJ right now has my complete faith He really truly does after Star Trek the guy gets past with me.
Yeah, so the fact that he's not only doing Star Trek He's doing Star Wars that was a little weird for me for a minute because it's like it's like almost crossing the streams Some of our friends have shown up. I see Adam. I see Scott Scott sit down.
Put a pair of headphones on, please Okay, cool. All right. All right cool It's got one of our friends from allied integrated marketing.
We saw Adam one of the managers over at the Angelica He's like with allied and rock and he's like one of our best friends. He's a utility. He's a utility man He's a freelancer.
He's a floater. He's a great guy. There's a great guy I'm just I'm the fact that we don't get this movie until eight months from tomorrow Just like that's that's why I'm just I'm watched at once and that's fine Because I don't be watched at a handful of times Yeah, and there's all these okay I have a friend of mine that does this thing called geek news Uh-huh, and he sends out every day a whole bunch of these articles from like any cool news and All these other websites Well Every time he sends a Star Wars one out.
I don't read it And the reason is I don't want to know I wanted I wanted to be like when I saw Star Wars I Saw Star Wars in the theater right so did I a few weeks after it came out the first original Star I don't know how long it had been up by the time I saw I was in I was I was I Well, it's about to turn four. Okay. I'm a little older than you are sir Okay, there's nothing wrong with that.
It's just but I was maybe 14 when it came out. Okay, I was right Middle school high school when it came out all right all right 1977 and I begged my parents to take because it showed it one theater in Houston, Galleria Only theater really one theater in the entire Houston area wow if you wanted to see you had to go to the Galleria And I had gotten the book and I read the book and I was like oh my god I've got to see this movie. Okay, and the book was written by George Lucas, right, okay?
so I finally taught my father into taking me to the all the way to into Houston to the Galleria Wow So we go to the Galleria and I go I need to take a first Star Wars and she goes okay The next one is like 1115 and I was like great. She's oh no no in three days Wow It was sold out for the entire three days. It's gonna be that way this go around to everywhere Now did you also know that it was on this day in 1973 that George Lucas began writing Star Wars?
Yes, I saw that I saw that on Star Wars dot com You know where I saw episode four Where right across the street from where we're sitting? Oh, wow One in two North Park one in two I was still living in Iowa and it was that one of the old South theaters It only showed one movie I had to balcony and everything I remember the theater because The lobby they still had lobby cards that then and I was seeing all the the production stills from this movie going My mind's about to melt and I'm free, you know, I'm like two months shy of turning four Yeah, and I remember that theater as clear as day because that's where we were and I just remembered that like Even as little as I was that movie changed my life. Oh, yeah You know, that that is where I truly became embraced in my geek.
It's it's the movie that made you fall in love with movies Absolutely, that's how I've always explained it to people and JJ is bring I really believe JJ is bringing that back with this He's bringing my inner he's waking my inner child up because Lucas put a bullet in it back in 99 See and you and I will always agree to disagree on this because I'm not saying that episode one was The godfather of our time, but I really episode one didn't bother me I was the godfather time was godfather three But see I don't see it that way. I just I I went into episode one thinking to myself This is the first chapter of a book. This is setting everything up.
So my expectations were actually fairly low Which is probably why it doesn't bother me as much like I knew I wasn't gonna get episode four out of episode one I knew that going yet Now your hatred is is multi-layered when it comes to episode one Oh to me it's it's right there with caravan of courage as far as one of the worst Star Wars films ever made That is the holiday special. Yeah, I mean be To to make the decisions that he made to Push certain characters down your throat that really should never have been pushed in the first place Jar Jar But it's all Jar Jar's fault and to kill off mall See that's where I was going completely unnecessary There was no reason to kill him when you could have kept him all the way through where you killed off Duku Yeah, mall could have been Duku and mall was a much more interesting character taking nothing away from the great Christopher Lee Mall was a fascinating character Christopher Lee is a metal gods are and It just it was totally uncalled for Yeah, that all the merchandising was based around the image of mall anytime you bought any type of toy or anything Related to episode one mall's face was on the box. Oh, yeah, and then you just and ceremoniously unceremoniously just Got him and throw him down a elevator shaft is a complete waste of a character All right, Scott's back.
He's gonna sit down with us. I'm back. I got to sing a song.
Oh, okay. Well, that's even better I've been actually Waiting to say this please do I don't know if we're PG's like WV right now We're family friendly. Well, they said it.
So fuck it. Super like steady bitch Okay, and that's where we're at Okay, anyways, I'm going PG from here on okay, we're talking about the episode seven trailer Yeah, I didn't watch it. You haven't seen it yet.
I'm waiting to watch it a theater But I've seen the stills Oscar Isaac looks like he fits in so well Talk right into the microphone. Okay, there you go. You're good.
All right. Yeah, no There you go. Oscar Isaac looks great.
Um, hot and chewy look great. That's all I know though I haven't seen it Devon just played it like about 10 minutes really. Yeah, I've got it right here Well, no, I don't want to watch it.
I want to see it a theater. I respect that Yeah, that's what I did with the the first one, but and we were talking earlier in the in the regular show About a movie that you're very familiar with this week X-Mocky now. Yes, and When finding out that Oscar Isaac was going to play Apocalypse yeah, I wasn't really sure at first until I saw X-Mocky now seeing him balled with the beard I actually saw Apocalypse.
Oh, yeah, so I'm good with it now like this guy's got This guy's gonna have more geek credit a year than a lot of people have an entire career He's gonna have a lot more money than anybody else too, and he's already said that he's already said that his character will be back for episode eight He was in a most violent violent year, which to me was a very forgettable film. I didn't really did it really I did not take that he was really he was good He was good. He was good at just as to Chastain was amazing and that she was wasted in that movie Oh, yeah, she was wasted in that movie because I like my girls But I felt that somebody of her caliber should have been given a bigger role I felt that her her role in that film just it never clicked with me She for for the when she came first came on the scene It was film after film after film where she was the best thing in it agreed You know, it was these awful independent films.
You're like going She's brilliant. This film is a piece of crap But she's brilliant wait wait wait. You just say the movie is a piece of crap.
No, he said other films. She's done. Oh, okay Yeah, Jurassic World looks terrible See, you know, he's a big Jurassic Park fan.
Yeah, not surprise for a nice price Howard in that film. Yeah, that's right Sorry, they're both redheads. Yeah, but we can talk about Jurassic World too because we're just kind of reforming right now We get a new trailer for that dropping on Monday if I'm not mistaken.
No, it already out. I already I think I saw it I was no though. It was just still for it.
Oh, okay. I saw the the new poster that poster looks great I have not seen that. Oh, there's a new poster.
Okay, but let's talk about this If you guys haven't already Batman versus Superman. Oh, we saw the trailer earlier today. Oh, yeah Oh my god Yeah, I am I am very very like in a minority here, but damn that looks it looks amazing.
I mean I'm so people are not happy with Clark No, but you know what exactly and that's what I love about this universe that no one has started in Zach has continued on We're basing this in as much reality as we can and when you're a superhero and you have this fight and you destroy Half of my city. I'm not gonna be happy with you and I'll tell you this There is no chance that was planned. They are reading that off the internet reading that from reactions And I think that's the best way to do this why not own it own it why not you're I just I love the shot in the trailer Where you finally get the reveal of the statue and it's just that that spray pin false god I was like okay, I'm sold.
That's great. This could be squirrels meeting in a cage for two hours And I'm in because of that shot um I think that a lot of people I think a lot of people are going a lot of critics of bat fleck are gonna be silenced when they see this because he looks great in the suit He's already got that disturbed look in the shot where he's not in the cowl where he's looking at the suit Oh my god, that's a great shot fantastic and he and he encompasses who Bruce Wayne is in that shot Yeah, and I'm very critical of my batman. He works the part.
Oh my god me too perfect for the role I totally grabbed always on the aflox train. No problems at all there, but um, you know Everybody's saying it's starting out returns. No, it's not.
It's a Batman Superman viewed from dark night returns They do the the the armor and the outfit and finally got to see a decent version of the shot They showed it sand the ego last year. Yes, I wouldn't put on the internet and And I don't I don't know that it's gonna be issue four of the dark night I think but I think there's gonna be enough elements of it that are gonna make the fanboys half Yeah, it's just gonna be fan service. That's perfect.
It's gonna be that fight. It's gonna be that fight But in dark night returns he didn't hate Superman No, everybody didn't hate super right. He just said, you know, this is my outlook.
This is your outlook Let's do this and he didn't go after Clark Clark came after him because the president told him you got to go shut him down Nixon man. No, it was Reagan. It was Reagan.
Nixon was watching novel. It's been a while. I've been drinking It is what it is, but yeah, I mean I We were talking earlier too about how March is an odd choice for this film You know, I was actually uh, I'm gonna drop this.
I saw Avengers this morning and Don't don't spoil anything for me. I'm not gonna say anything other than that, but no, what are you thinking? It what I'm saying is it got me thinking Why may?
Why not June? I know that in summer blockbusters are getting earlier and earlier and earlier but why not wait till June Everybody's out of school. Yeah, yeah, but Star Wars kind of started that ball rolling They want to be the first one out of the gate man.
That's what's going on. Yeah, the summer release date is all of them ask you this Yeah, you're nay and they're afraid. I'm not the guy to ask because you don't know me well enough Any any movie that people like I don't any movie that people hate.
I love So I'll say this I hated the first Avengers hated it. Uh, I think that movie. I'll tell you the reasons why it's Iron Man and Friends Which is no problem for me generally, but it's um You know, it's it's not that movie.
It's not supposed to be um Loki Poke stick That's so juvenile like really come on now um and it's just so Unfocused in my opinion You know, you have all these characters and nobody gets there do I feel like at all um So I can never really get into it. I tried to watch it I tried really really hard. I four times in theaters.
I watched that movie and I'm just like I don't see it. What is everybody like this? So I and I even own it.
I've watched it at home sober not sober Every situation I can and I can't get into it. I so given that though I'll say that I liked it. You liked Ultron.
I'll say that. That's all I can say them. Okay, and that's and I'm good with that All right, looks like we have our first guest who is shimmy in his way in here good mercy Okay, see who needs to bail He's flip a coin.
I'm good either way. Scott. We're gonna talk to you later, sir All right Chatted I'm obvious it might be read better than mine because I can't exactly read what's going on here Oh, it's two different things joining us right now Brian Massey.

It's a little fun. So It's nice acting voice acting to me.
It's actually the hardest kind of acting Uh, I've done on camera acting. I've done all kinds of acting, but uh voice acting is a whole different monster Is all you have is your voice. He had no place So those guys are real troopers And you're on a juggernaut.
I mean you're attached to attack on Titan. You've been involved in You friend in front of the show Steven Zimmerman huge fan of attack on Titan Which apparently they're doing a live action film. Yes, there's a trailer out there I haven't gotten Steven's opinion yet because he's you know, that's that's his deal right But it's it's blowing up very very fast.
It's a huge cool show I I had to think might be far from forgetting me on that show. I just played the drill instructor All right, attack on the Titan. That's all I do.

I was just like It's Piper Laurie. Oh my god, you know, I was so freaked out. I didn't think to ask you're about caring I was like you're you know You're in the hustler and that's a great movie which they screened Monday night.
Yeah, and I just cannot I just I totally Freaked out because I was leaving. Well, that's it. Okay.
What else is she in a bunch of TV? Oh, it's what I looked about the Dallas International Film Festival amongst so many other things is It's not just new films. You know, they screen Like I said, that's tomorrow.
That's boot is tomorrow. Yeah, we had Raging bull was screened during the Dallas International Film Festival and all these tropicalists. Yeah, but tropicalists as well great classic films and new films both established people and up and comers Which is so great that the Dallas International Film Festival can can do this and they do it with a great balance as well The thing I like the best about the Dallas International Film Festival is they treat everybody the same.
Yep. You ain't lying, right? Um, the other day we were doing the press We had dirt Namitsky on And right beside him was a high school kid And we treated him both exactly the same on the red carpet.
We have another we have two guests We have two guests, so I am bailing out all right go enjoy the party sir. Thank you. Get it for sitting in with us Joining us right now The co-directors of I lost it.
I'm read on yellow kill a fella which Posters were everywhere for these things and we've got the directors of the intern there you go don't which I saw and I love you Tell me what you saw Incredible flick. I loved it Justin Meeks Dwayne Graves joining us fresh off dfs honors. Welcome to the show gentlemen.
Hey glad to be here So you guys screened early on in the festival if I'm not mistaken. Yeah, the first week can we screen Friday and Sunday How'd it go? It was great.
Yeah, we had a great turnout. Yeah, it was surprising. So have you finally just What I guess by question here we talk about being screened early in the festival Do I need to turn you up a little bit over there?
You okay? Just a little bit. How's that better?
That's perfect. All right cool How does it feel to just just screen so early in the festival and then you have kind of that time after Is it better for you to screen early and then have that time to just kind of socialize and see other films or is it better for you to kind of lead up to it? Well, I mean if I was able to pick I would I would say That it would be better to have one early and then one later so word can travel kind of book end Yeah, you know things can build up to it But I mean, you know, we're just happy to be here.
So I mean just having a slot Twice is good enough. We're happy. Yeah, absolutely, you know, and I'd rather have the first weekend than the last weekend with the thump fast and everything dying out right or during the week because everyone's fresh They came in and it showed in our audience.
I mean we almost filled both Theater so we can tell us tell us tell our audience about the film Oh gosh, it's a film you probably haven't done that very much You know, we've been working on this film for the past six years, you know riding it and getting it together along with other stuff and basically it's It's a it's a dark dark western set in the 1900s which follows a group of outlaws As they try to make their retirement they try to find Some a robbery that they they stowed away in a well But the trouble is they have to go a long ways over Texas across all the terrain and it ends up being 500 miles And they start dying. Yeah, they start dying, you know, and mysteriously Exactly weirdly and protestly for me The western has become almost a lost art form. Yeah, and whenever I say I hear somebody say hey There's a new western coming out.
I'm already on board Yeah, because my my generation grew up on those great westerns Even the westerners that came before me You know, I had adults in my life that were like no, you're gonna sit down and you're gonna watch the sons of Katie elder And you're good, you know, that was one. I remember fondly grown up You're gonna sit down and you're gonna watch the good the bad and the ugly sure And you're gonna watch all these great westerns and so when somebody brings a new western I'm in You know, it's funny now though is because we thought the same thing. We're like, oh man We've seen a couple of TV series in the western slowly trickles back and then it comes back in every time the westerns out there it seems like It breaks audience awards.
Everyone wants to watch it. Everybody wants to watch western And when we had this movie out we've sold this western now. We're at the at the verge of selling really yes a good sell But the thing is is that everyone says the same thing and even film festivals, you know is like I'm not sure about a western.
I'm not sure about a western But then when it comes out, it seems like everybody likes a western Everyone likes to watch some sort of dark Western, you know, we're always on the fringe You know, I like it like it doesn't fit in with what we're putting together here. That's what we heard a lot And my well, they is the westerns are the ultimate story of good versus evil. They always are Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know, you mentioned some of the classics and that's really what we had in mind more making this You know, we love the the modern remakes.
I mean, we like three tinder you mother remake. You know, I mean We like the true-get remake You know, we're still on board just because they're western. There's not a lot of right?
So it's just like getting you fixed But the ones you mentioned in that era was exactly what we had in mind when we were making it writing it You know the whole process so when you look at it It has the look and feel of a movie that would fit in On the same shelf as those, you know, that was the idea not not just aesthetically, but you know Plotwise and the characters and the you know the ensemble and the weird Sort of carnival atmosphere that some of them had that's what we were striving for was this the actual premiere of the film Or happens to have been screened before this was the world premiere no one I mean in fact no one other people worked on it had seen it before Where's it going from here? We just I got to deal with image entertainment. So it'll be released very nice It'll be out later in this year.
So we're very excited about that Both the international People looking at it as well. So I mean are there any other festivals or you just now know that you've got the distribution I mean the distribution was honestly it was already lined up before this festival So we really I mean, you know a lot of people use festivals to sort of get the stage to get distribution So we to be honest we already had it. So this was all just sort of like icing on the cake, you know, we know where we'd even have a festival But so no we we don't have any light and up but that could change now that we've done this one So yeah, that's when I was mentioning about people that you know, especially even in film festivals Dallas gave us a heck of a chance You know being being able to premiere here But we went a long time with a lot of film festivals denying it, you know, and we we got A great company that wants to distribute it for us, you know, nationally and some international countries as well, you know, so it's like You know like the way we're saying this is icing on the cake, but still it's a great It's a great thing to be a part of you know to show it to an audience and have them To see because you you never know exactly what they're gonna laugh at and until you put it in a room of strangers That didn't work on the film you have no idea.
So it was nice to see how it played, you know Where they laughed when you didn't think they would and vice versa, you know And you know, I mean if you do get to see this movie or anything I mean go to Greeks Greeks films.com. That's our website and we've done four movies before this is our fourth feature And we've been at this thing for 12 years together 13 years 15 years, you know, I lost track Hey, that's what we're looking for now is is to go on to our next project. So you'll see us again Yeah, so what what is the next project?
Ah, well, we have a couple on the on the on the board, but more than like it'll probably have a little dark Psychological psychological thriller. Maybe I guess would be a good way to describe it Yeah, it'll be more of the dramatic side and less of the horror side, but it will still have some of that goodness thriller. Yeah So Total experience on the Dallas film festival is an actual film festival you guys just came from DFS awards on assuming Yes, how'd that go?
No, it's not a dress all the time. Yeah, sometimes I have to It's very tricky dressy. You know with our first film wild man of the Navidad.
We were in Tribeca And I'd have to say this lounge with the way they have it set up. It's oh, yeah, it's close It's nice. Wow, they put a lot of money in Tribeca.
Yeah, yeah, absolutely But they put a lot of money in this too. Obviously, they didn't have any sort of gala or anything like this So we're not used to like cleaning up Brother you ain't the only one Plus you have to walk to the other side of Manhattan. Yeah, here.
It's all in one place And that was they really planned it well. Oh, yeah, oh man. This is this has been great I mean this is my first experience here, and I would love to come back.
They've treated us very well And they just you know, they're the old filmmakers. They're all about us and not, you know The bringing in the big names. I accept John Lennon's, but I'll oh that's a cool, you know, I mean how could you not?
Hey, what a plus Los brothers. Yeah, joking. Yeah, you're but you're bookending the festival with blythe danner and Sean We love is hearing so many filmmakers have that positive experience with the Dallas International Film Festival where I've had so many people come up and say look man We love is we're getting that treatment that we might not get it other film festivals that now it really goes all out and puts everything out there and And and let's the filmmakers have their moments that they deserve for all of the hard work that they put in right And you're really good at that.
Yeah, every detail that they they do you know They they assign someone to you to sort of make sure everything's going smoothly and you know You get the red carpet experience you get lots of press coverage and they sort of make sure that that that evolves over the course of the festival And they're very helpful in pushing you in the right direction So I mean a lot of times festivals you just go and you get lost in it and you're like it's over Right, yeah, they take you by the hand and definitely guide you around and I mean that you know have to take it for that sure That's awesome. Have you been able to check anything else out that you really enjoyed? Well, honestly, we haven't really had I mean when you have a film it's so hard, you know, because you're like pushing in and so No, I haven't got to see all the films that I wanted to so I'm a little disappointed in that regard plus Family took us back and so we've gone back and forth from Austin, but um But I have a few on my radar.
So I'm watching for him. I have a feeling they'll be out soon So any and which ones I would like to see western actually And both of us we we almost made it but there was some event that was in way, but It's just because we're very interested in that documentary And I also I'd like to see slow west which which won Sundance so I'm going for the westerns She's like Dallas really plugged a lot of western or western like movies in this festival this year You know, we went on a couple of rounds of film festivals. I mean we had a movie that was Two hours at six minutes or so and we cut it down an hour and 46 minutes So this is our second year coming to festivals it took us a while to get exactly like we wanted So I mean are they only being appreciative to Dallas International Film Festival, but also Just just just been been pushing it for a while.
So this is a real treat for us. Absolutely. All right So this show is infamous for shameless self-promotion So we've got Greek Greeks films.com.
Was that right on that? I've got some link on the on our web on our Facebook All right, give me all your social media because we want everybody to support you guys as well Okay, well Facebook.com slash red on yellow killa fella is our main page there But Greeks films.com is a good hub because it can point you in all the right directions and for all the films We've done documentaries and horror movies and you name it. We've tried it But that's what it's all about.
Yes, the more diverse you could be in the more fun you're having some work We have a movie on showtime right now called butcher boys has been shown and then we on Netflix Waldman of the Navidad is our freshman effort Also have a documentary up syndrome on Netflix. No actually. That's on Hulu on Hulu Yeah, sorry and then also if you go to Greeks films.com you'll see some of our shorts and all the some of them Hey, but we you know, we got to throw it all out there, you know, hey, that's what you do, you know, I like to bury some of them All right, gentlemen, we're gonna go let you enjoy your evening.

We're gonna keep this thing moving And we have another guest right now From another movie that we actually covered last week on the show and we had the producer But now we have the writer director of it from don't look in the basement to Anthony Brownrig welcome to the show sir Hey, thanks a lot. I appreciate it Don actually got to see your film oh, yeah, he very much enjoyed it We had one of your producers on the show last week.
Oh David Yes, and he was great For the people that are just now listening to this show tell them about the film. Oh, well don't look in the basement Part two is the sequel to the 1972 Drive-in film don't look in the basement which was directed by my father as at Brownrig And that's what I was waiting for oh, yeah, yeah, I grew up with that film and with you know most of the actors as well and So about 40 years later, you know my father always wanted to do a sequel and he was unable to In the time that he was with us. We lost him in 96 and since that time it kind of fell on me to ticket the mantle trying to do the sequel that He could never get done Take me through this now.
Did you you wrote and directed it? I co-wrote it with Megan Emmerich. Okay, also plays Jennifer in the film So I totally lost my train of thought of How hard was it to kind of did you was it hard for you to recapture that same Vibe from the first one or did you kind of have this idea in your head long enough that you were able to flesh it out?
Well, yeah, well Yeah, basically is a all my life of dad talking about it and then 14 years of me actually you know working Very screenplays one after the other um It was really hard because what I didn't want to do was I didn't want to compete with that right, you know And so what I wanted to create was kind of a hitchcock suspense film That was modern day and used the first film as a Real-life event that occurred in the 70s. Okay, you know, so I wanted it to be much more of a storyline as opposed to It's just like the first one only bloodier It's just like it but different right It's it but it's a continuation of the storyline because of the guy that was Sam who was alive at the end of the first film what happened to him 40 years later and you know Fleshing out the end of the story of don't look in the basement One of the thing I love and you said the same thing as mr. Rikki said last week Use the word drive-in it's a drive-in movie.
Yeah, which I'm so glad that you guys put it that way because I'm such a fan of the drive-in We just had we have one just south of here. That's wonderful if we let it the drive-in was such a dying thing for so long Yeah, and they're all starting that we've got one in anisers one for worth now Oh, yeah, the the coyote the coyote. Yeah, oh my god I haven't been out there yet, but actually we're actually looking at We've talked about the idea of trying to have a When we do a full release of the film is to do a double feature because basement was that was gonna be my next question and we actually have a print Really of the original basement 35 millimeter?
Yeah, wow, and we've actually yeah from somebody that actually owns in their private archive and we actually Uh have been working on putting together a kind of a remastered same thing I mean, we're not gonna change it at all right, but just clean it up the little batches and all that And basically try to do a double feature first one and then the second one nice. So it's an idea. So we're tossing it around Where is the film going from here?
Uh, that's a good question. Uh, we this is our where world premiere was So this is the first time that it's been shown publicly and now we're dealing with some distributors We're talking we've suddenly we've got all these people trying to talk to us about Getting it out and distributing it, which is great And then we've got several other festivals that it's gone out to I of course and the director so I don't Know all of the details When it comes to where they tell me to go I go where they tell me to go I mean, I've done my job. I sat in my little chair and said action cut now.
It's you know Uh, so yeah, and it really was a lot of that with the actors were great in this film I know there's probably eventually going to be a DVD release a blu-ray release. Oh, yeah Possibilities that you could do a commentary for the original. That's already yours.
Oh, yeah That's what I'm talking about see because I grew up with a lot of the original cast with Annabelle Weenick and Camilla Carr who was in the original Is actually in the sequel nice as a different character nice because her character died in the first one So but she plays a completely different character, but we had to bring some people back You know because I think dad would have wanted that What was that like sitting in that director's chair? Knowing that you know You're that you're literally taking the mantle from your father from the first film Was there a was that a different feel for you in that director's chair or for you this It was it just I'm just a director. It was a spooky feel.
Oh, yeah, there's a lot of pressure Because you know, I mean I grew up in a horror household You know and I know that my right big huge fans up if I screw think my my father did don't look in the basement Poor white trash part to keep my grave open don't hang up. I mean a lot of these titles You're like any second down someone. He's gonna come tap it on my shoulder It's right So this is my legacy son don't screw it up exactly and so One of the things that he had always talked about is if you've seen don't look in the basement Was that dad always talked about through all the years he was working on a sequence is the only damn thing that I know I want to have is I want Sam to put his boat in the water And so it was like whatever we do We've we've got to have that at some point So yeah, I took a lot of his notes and we started putting it together It was very intimidating being in the chair Because we shot it in the same house as the original We I believe we did talk about that.
Yes, we did in in twokana. It was the same house And it was really kind of spooky because I remember periodically throughout the years Dad would take a trip there Just to kind of walk around the set and make notes about what he wanted to do and I would go and on occasion So it was really weird, you know going back with the full cast and crew and all the cameras and everything going Okay, it's where dad shot this. Oh, this where dad wanted to shoot this scene.
Oh, this is where the whole You know the the massacre happened and it was just really a surreal feeling and from some of the cast members as well Uh, like Scott Teppermann who was a huge fan of the original don't look in the basement man He showed up and was like oh my god. This is the room. This is where it was.
Oh my gosh It's just tripping me man. I'm flipping out man. So it was really it was really cool And it sounds like everything went well.
How long to take you to film it about three and a half weeks A film you notice that a lot of here the doubts are national festival film festival There's been a lot of the films that have been shot in three weeks or less like get out there get it done move on and it's just fast Well, we lucked we lucked out with this place because where the original film was shot is now a hostel So it's three rooms and three floors of rooms And then you've got a cafeteria with an industrial kitchen. So we just hired chefs There you go. You all slept for three weeks on the second floor Shot in the third floor so as I can wake up seven o'clock go downstairs go to the cafeteria eat breakfast and go up There's the third floor and start shooting no need for a transportation captain.
You're already there right It was great. It was like summer camp. We all just kind of hung out and then barbecue's at night.
It was great Are you have you exhaled yet? I'm sorry. What have you exhaled yet?
All right. Oh no No, I know that this no, I don't know that I'll ever hex exhale with this one There'll always be they'll always be the Oh, man, I wish I could have shot that different. Oh god.
Why didn't we shoot that while we were there? You know gosh, you know, I mean, there's I could tweak this thing and so forever, you know How you feel now versus how you felt a week ago How do I feel now versus versus versus a week ago versus for the premiere? Oh Oh much more comfortable.
I feel I mean, I'm glad we got a lot of great responses I mean being a director is only one half of the coin the other half is the audience You know if you want to make a film for yourself that's great as long as you're ready to buy all your own tickets too That's true, you know So you've got to pay attention what the audience is getting and not getting and you know You sometimes you make adjustments accordingly sometimes hey man. It's perfect. It's awesome the way it is so Uh, I enjoy just hearing the feedback, you know, are they getting it?
And I'm a lot more comfortable now because we've gotten some good feedback You know from people that aren't like family and friends right, you know, that all want to be totally supportive You know and it's been it's been wonderful So before we let you go enjoy your evening. Yeah, I want you to enjoy the evening shameless plugs give us give us social media give us websites give us everything Shameless plugs next two films coming up red Victoria to which we're currently looking for funding on And a werewolf film called freeborn Google freeborn werewolf and you'll see it's been another project been in development for a number of years So uh website social media uh Facebook we go uh freeborn on Facebook as well as red Victoria to So uh both of those are on Facebook and I know don't look at the basement you has a Facebook page because we already linked it from our face. Yes Yes, absolutely, and we've been Facebook friends for a while apparently.
He's friends with Jason B Oh really and uh and with uh, I've known Jason for with Keith Alcorn right. Oh my god. Yes And study straight who graduated with my sister right right right Hey, well red Victoria to check it out.
Got it. That's gonna be full of blood and full of absolute carnage That's up your alley. Yes, it is lots of fun and comedy Anthony Brown-Rick director and writer of don't look in the basement too.
Thank you for joining us sir Thanks a lot guys. I really appreciate it. I was honest to be enjoying the show.
Okay, enjoy the evening And we're gonna keep rolling because joining us right now Is the director of a movie I got to see last night Called lone star holy war He is Lindell singleton you're on sir. Welcome. Thank you It is an honor to have you here.
You were at the screening last night. I believe because you look familiar to me Yes, I did the Q&A last night. I was there.
Yes, sir Lone star holy war for our audience that isn't local because we're all over the world because we're a podcast. That's what we do Just basically basically this is the story of the rivalry between the University of Texas and Texas A&M Which goes back longer than I realized until I saw your film right so tell us tell us about it What's else? I mean, I mean, I don't know while she need to say besides that because I don't know that you want to give away too much before we do I you know, I'm coming and going I saw this too Yeah, you saw before I did.
It's a great documentary. It gave both views Both sides of the story of A&M and Texas great history great footage of today I it was an incredible job. I alumnus so I'm out Now We have we have to declare allegiances.
Okay Did you have no legions going into this thing? I did not I may I'm a kid from Los Angeles. Okay, I'm from Florida So I didn't have a pony in this race either.
I had no skin in this game from the start I actually and I pride myself on being a sports guy sports is part of what we do on this show. Yes, sir I Learned a lot I did not know that neither one of these teams had those names when they first started That was one of the things I learned and I was like had no idea and Chad and I were actually talking about that driving over here tonight about some of the things I learned uh How what take me to the process because a lot of the people that are involved in this your interview subjects a handful of them are from the Dallas Fort Worth area I one of whom was there last night the great norbianskis right? I may think fan of how did you get hooked up with those people being a guy from LA Well, I um, I moved to uh moved to Texas and in 1989 native LA kid, but I've been in uh, I've been in the Dallas Fort Worth area since 1989 Okay, and you know, we my partners and I uh King Hollis and Barry Mendelsson We embarked on a journey that started several years ago to find and present the 28 most extraordinary sports stories in the history of the state Oh, wow and that journey began right about the time then the arrival we ended So it was just a perfect storm really it was the classic way for us to To begin the story to begin our journey with this film lone star holy war and what we really started As a somewhat of a of a straightforward sports documentary the more that we Got into it the more that we did the research and the due diligence We began to realize that this story is It's so much bigger than just A sports story because these are the two most significant institutions in the state of Texas.
I mean they are as big as the Roman Catholic Church by comparison in the state the influence that they wield And they decided after 118 years they weren't going to play football anymore and that's a story And hearts crack and hearts crack wide open all over the state Kyle field is on so many lists of the of one of the 10 Stadiums you have to see a football game in right. I mean, I've been down the conversation a couple of times just unbusiness trips and That A&M is college station Like they're just happens to be other stuff around it. You know what I mean But what I really dug about your film was when you get to the breakup You look at it from both sides and it's two so totally different stories Where a&M wants to talk a lot about how texas was threatening to go to the pack 12 the texas didn't really want to talk about that They wanted to talk more about the network and how it's supposed to be together I found that fascinating and I will tell you by one criticism.
I wanted it to be longer I wanted another half an hour, you know, because I was so riveted by the story you were telling It's credit started to roll and I was like no give me more, you know Well the original cut was 88 minutes and we went back in it went back in And and and edited to shape it down to a 74 minute cut which is what you saw last night But one of the one of the things that you said that I really appreciate is that We decided to move away from any kind of voiceover any kind of commentary from the filmmakers when it came to the essence of the breakup We wanted the two universities To just tell their stories no parallel cutting nothing. This is the perspective from college station This is the perspective from Austin and as you can see they're They're a wildly different assessment of what happened and why it ended up that way and speaking of narration The guy you got to narrate the first part of this thing right like I for a minute was like did they get John Fesenda for this, you know, because I was just waiting for the autumn wind is a rain Like it was just I loved that about it How I mean you said you wanted to tell the 28 best stories in Texas sports, right? This was one correct right what's next What's next for us is a second film that I That I directed in the series and my partner King Hollis the and I alternate in And in directing the films, but the second one is one That was probably one of the most joyous films for me to work on and that is the extraordinary story Of the Houston Astridome and it's all the judge and the ape wonder and then it talks about you know Judge Roy Hofmein's of course who was this Amazing visionary character that believed that baseball could be played indoors and believed that he could have a place In the bayous of Houston that people would come to to see events that he baseball inside and the Astridome story is It's just extraordinary and this as you know is the 50th anniversary earlier this week was the was the official first The 50th areas of the first event held at the Astridome and one of the things about the Astridome Then I'm sure yourself and many of your listeners know is that the Astridome was the first Dome Stadium anywhere in the world, and that's why it was the eighth wonder Why was the eighth wonder and it it changed the trajectory of the viewer fan experience for all of sports So the Astridome right here in Texas is something that just changed the way that we view sports globally And why can't we in Houston get it together make it a landmark and be done with it You know why is there so much so much pushback on this because And it's amazing because it's right next door to NRG which is used to be reliant stadium And it's amazing how the new stadium just kind of dwarfs it right you know When is that good are you working on that now or what's the time frame on that?
We're in post-production on that oh wow, okay, so we're cutting it now So our goal is to have it available by end by end of summer You know that you know you were talking about how The Astridome is dwarfed by a by RPG stadium You know the Astridome goes 40 feet below the ground right and that's the that's the thing about yeah people see it They're like oh, it's not that thing about no no Go inside and take it down. It's what you don't see. It's what I mean, it's what you don't see I mean, you know think about the the basketball game that was played there between you know You see a lay in the university of Houston You know the the game of that mag the highest number of people Do ever watch a basketball game in the history of the sport it occurred right there and right there in the Astridome And people in Houston have a profound Emotional connection with absolutely that's a friend down there And that's one of the things that really came out in the course of making the picture that everybody has Let me tell you about how me and my family went to the Astridome and had an experience there You know even the Houston gamblers, you know people want to still talk about the Houston gamblers And people to this day started I can I tell you how many people broke down on camera talking about love you blue And that's gonna be out later this year.
Yeah later this year. We're in post-production currently Okay, so loans are holy war. I believe this was the premiere correct.
This was the world premiere of loan star holy war Where's it going from here? It will on June 9th. It will be released as a featured documentary on iTunes really?
Yes indeed. Are you gonna do any festivals between now and then? We're open, you know, I mean we we don't have anything That is specifically planned, but we're certainly open to that idea You know, this was the first time for us that we That you know the film was you know seen in front of a live audience and the reaction to the film was it was it was so rich It was so engaging, you know You know as a director.
I'd love to show it one more one or two more times in front of a live audience Outstanding. Okay, so shameless self-promotion Website social media. Tell us all about it Texas28films.com like us on Facebook and Any questions that you have you want to talk about the picture, you know my personal Twitter is Atlandell 153 and I'd be happy to just you know to just talk about the picture talk about the film loans are holy war The Texas 28 thing just clicked with me.
Yes, that's why you called it Texas 28 because you're telling the 28 best stories in Texas sports and and there's one other subtle subtle Reasoning behind that and Texas was the 28th state admitted to the union. There you go nice So it all kind of you know, there's synchronicity Congratulations Thank you on the success of both screens. We hallucinate nothing but luck from here on out We can't wait to see the astradome thing and where you guys are going from here.
Go enjoy the evening right friend Thank you. Thank you for having me on it. It was an honor to be in your absolute honor to have you sit with us all right Lindell Singleton director of a lone star holy war What do you say?
It's great. Oh, yeah, I'll enjoy it Now he gets to go do Bismarck. That's right.
I know there was Bismarck. He going on over there Devon's got this thing out of control over there. There's people pouring in We are at the media lounge at the Dallas International Film Festival the ninth annual I have now seen my first selfie stick of the evening in front of us Did you know that they said uh The Kentucky Derby is banning the selfie stick this year?
Really yep Scott's back with us Suplex city I got to say Come on now we can talk a little bit of wrestling with Scott since he's here. No, we can't okay. We'll move on No, no, let's see.
I'm kidding kidding. I'm not watch smackdown or of course impacts was tonight so I haven't had a chance But I did get through raw Very very quickly this week. You know, I I read the recap and that's that's basically about it I can't even remember what it was I can tell you when they're overseas I don't understand that when when Vince takes the company overseas.
It's always seems as a subpar product to me Well, and they only get it twice a year, so you think they would up their game. No, they were though They never up their game and you you look back hell This is even like this is local. I think it was Las Vegas.
Um, you go back to the CM Punk um The shoot where he's standing or sitting at the ramp and everybody's like was that real? Oh my god and then Oh, he walks off and oh, here's the taping for raw number two, and you're like oh That was script. Let me actually see him set something on Monday night We're of course, you know, they were booing him out of the building But he said that he believes it's long overdue that London deserves WrestleMania To me that is a logistical nightmare Because if you're gonna do WrestleMania in prime time in London, that's gonna air it new That's why it's never gonna happen And that's the only reason it's never gonna happen, but it's a super interesting concept.
I mean I I love the fact that this is a global company But I just don't think would justically that you can do WrestleMania and not in this country No, it's not gonna happen. It really really won't and it's hard enough with time to outside of these times It was weird enough um and when it was in California this past month Um, seeing Undertaker come out in the day time What I'm not the only one that thought that yeah, I was just like why are we doing this outdoors during the day when All of your effects like how much better would triple H's entrance have been if the sun had gone down Oh lord, I don't think we've spoken that wasn't that was a joke to me and I remember taking a picture with a Of that entrance and I sent it to a friend and I said I'm not supposed to laugh at this am I And he said no, no, no, no, I'm laughing too. Well, I also didn't understand the logic of jobings thing But that's a whole different.
I didn't get that either, but you know, you knew it was gonna happen We have a guest It dog gone it. Thank you for having me on for a second year in a row Tell you what I tell you what I have not watched We're finally home chewy Welcome home chewy whatever it is everybody who we are because all right. Okay.
Okay. All right Thank you for having me on my name's Hunter Carson. I accepted in the word for my dad Uh, and tomorrow we're showing breathless at four o'clock at the Texas theater Seminole film of the 80s Richard's Richard gear gear baby Richard gear baby Yeah, Richard gear baby.
We were I know something we were just talking about a little while ago That's so great one of the great things about the Dallas International Film Festival is Yes, you get these new films and these up and coming artists, but they show the classic films too I think that If somebody were to have a wonderful time at the Dallas Film Festival this weekend They would go watch breathless and then they would go watch the blues brothers That's a one two punch. That's both tomorrow, right? I mean how are you gonna?
I mean how can you how could you do better than that That's what dip does and you're showing it if the Texas theater Yeah, come on. I know it is I We were talking earlier like last year was the first time I got to go to the Texas theater of the year almost 20 years I've never gotten to go right last year. They were showing space battleship Yamato So I was like I have to go I almost went You're so good and I walked in there and I was like Like you feel the history would you walk in the door there?
Yeah You got to accept the award for your dad. Yes, I did at the TFS on just just a little while ago How the DFS honors ceremony go for you? Well, you know, I Fantastic I mean I'm up there accepting an award for my dad and and and you got John Landis and and and and you got two landises up there Also giving and getting awards and I'll tell you what I really honestly that I think I think Landis's speech Really was better than mine different in a different way.
It was better though I wish we could have been down there to hear it. We were up here doing our show But you did guys funny Oh, he's got like four films coming out Isn't that awesome and he's just never he's never not working. That's the thing about him Absolutely and he directed one of my favorite films ever in coming to America Which yes, I love that movie so so much I think it's the I I would it's probably in my top three quoted movies that I've ever seen I could watch that movie on a loop and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
We're talking about Animal House. We're talking about I know lose brothers. I know he's done so much great stuff and For the Dallas and National Film Festival to honor him Amongst everybody else is it somebody just said to me, you know what I got to meet some up a coming to film makers And I got to meet John Landis.
Yeah, like that's it's so Cross-generational at this thing We got to have you back on the show this year, which is great. Thank you You know, it's one of those things that It's like it's like you're right. It's cross-generational and you can see the young filmmakers and and I'm including myself in the young filmmakers having stars in their eyes when they meet an epic dude like John Landis And I'm told he's completely approachable totally just guys walk up and say hey, what's going on?
Totally right and to have the success he's had and still have that kind of ground to him That you could just go up and have a conversation with the dude And he doesn't have 90 people between you and him. Yeah, yeah, and And then on top of that You get to show the movie tomorrow Like right You know, and for people that don't understand breathless was gosh, where was that? 83 I remember I remember I remember I remember when Mcbride McBride and my dad were making You know, I have stories from that.
That's just one of the reasons I really psyched about tomorrow. I guess some good stories um, I mean What more could you want than you know a Film that couldn't guarantee you a Robert Rodriguez, you know Guillermo Delta are all these guys that are modern filmmakers talk about that as a seminal film for them So like you know, okay You see you see breathless and you're sitting there and you go okay Boy those two people are sitting in a car in a two-seater car But they're not really driving anywhere. What's behind them?
Oh, it's it's projected. It's 16 millimeter projected behind them And then you go and you watch pop fiction and you're like oh that guy's driving in a convertible car 16 millimeter projected behind and what and how often is it That an Americanized version of a foreign film right does Justice to it like breathless did because a lot of people don't understand that's a remake of a French film right Well, but don't say French because it's good dark. It's a little above the French thing I mean, I love French cinema, but then like when you look at good dark who's still making movies who released a movie last year Good dark show with the dark still making movies You go like dude.
There's like there's a let there's there's a level up to filmmaking that we all have to aspire to You know and the fact that this this kind of film did that kind of justice and it's still being shown to this day to audiences That will come out to see it right and I just I love it when when directors get it right right You know when when you can look at a film even I'm sure gotter probably looked at it and went I'm good You know because they captured his essence so well they did it for an American audience, which is very very tough to do Well, yeah, but it translates because you know the original guitar version is an American woman in Paris And this version is a French woman in Los Angeles in the 1980s You know, it's a perfect translation because in the 60s Paris was You know the shit, you know, and and and now in the 80s when they were making that everybody wanted to be an LA Yeah, you know, there's some major parallels that were really That were really easy to work with now. I'm not gonna lie to you and not say that this film doesn't make me feel old because it's 32 this year and Right, it's just like oh wow. It's been that long right well Paris, Texas 30 year baby feel real old Yeah, that is true Wow, yes, we because we talked about that last year.
That's what we did last year. Yes. Yeah, man So what's going on with you, man?
Let's talk about you. Okay, so well, so here's the thing like Working with so now I'm producing films and working with Dallas artists Dallas directors, you know Robert Pasco Patrick Johnson Jeff McGee Madison Leon working with these guys is fantastic because There's so thirsty for it man. These guys like filmmakers are thirsty to make movies and that's pretty much What the deal is you know, and if you're a filmmaker out there, I'll tell you what I'm going to slightly digress if you're a filmmaker out there Something something that I wanted to impart to the crowd downstairs You know kick Carson my dad kick Carson He cared so much about Artistry and he cared so much about taking any Idea no matter if it's hair brain or solid and following it to the end That's something that we can all learn from every idea is valid everything Happens in film Because somebody is brave enough to do it You know one of the the announced what I made downstairs which y'all didn't hear is that you know Diff turns 10 next year, right?
It turns 10 and they're introducing a category Uh, and the category is called the LM kit Carson Maverick Filmmaker Award. Really? Yeah They've been awesome.
We've been working on this for about six months now And I got to go ahead a couple a couple weeks ago Dallas from society and Diff said yeah, let's do it So for for the 10 year, we're going to do a new category, you know, it's it's going to be really cool How much hands-on are you going to be able to get into with it? I'm unclear on that because you know, there could be collusion if I'm too involved seriously man That is awesome, right? That is great great good.
Yeah, really good stuff Anything that you want to plug coming up that you're doing? Yeah, it did come see breathless tomorrow, man It's just great And also we have a TV show that we're really promoting this year. It's called the American Dream Go check it out a dream tv.com local filmmaker Madison Leon and local filmmaker Sam McQueen Both directed it.
It's a great piece of art. It's a documentary about It's a documentary series about sports and our first episode is Is Tony Dorset what he's going through? Wow and we take a real deep look at what brought him to this Part of his life where he's really struggling wow and the beautiful thing that somebody Like Tony Dorset A penultimate athlete the beauty that Tony Dorset brings to the table is that he's working through it and he's working to fight it and he never gives up This was in its early stages last year That's right.
That's right. You're right. You're right.
Because I remember you mentioned it me both way You have a potential because I mentioned I was such a the starback junkie And I'll tell you what these guys these football players that are working through the hardships They're just amazing and they're full of life And they are going to do what they're going to do And it's just it's just it's just great life for me. It's wonderful So, you know, go independent film go independent everything You know and the accessibility to all this stuff is so great now anything coming out that you're looking forward to anything That's just got you just Just like Ra Ra I'm ready for this film that's for me to get my hands on this film right now What what what I want to what I want to go see in the theaters? Um, you know, I really want to see the Avengers man.
I'm so ready to Just like dude And I'm really trying to like like they're putting out all these new TV spots I'm really trying to avoid it all because I'm at the point of saturation from like I don't want to know anymore You can't even buy a bag of Doritos You're like oh, no, I don't want to know And but we're so ready for that. Oh, and it summer movies Finally Finally summer movies anything that's anything that's standing out for you that you've seen so far this year No, actually it has been I've been a little behind the a ball this year with work And and getting this festival together and getting the word together and I've honestly been a little bit behind the a ball Um, it was last we saw was American sniper Outstanding oh my I'll tell you what I really dug about that film And it was a ballsy choice by Eastwood to go completely score free. Yeah, right?
Was an amazingly ballsy choice and it worked so brilliantly that I was just I got to the end and I was like there was one song right I hear Phil Yeah Hey, hey man great job. Hey man great job All right, we have another guest joining us and Donna's not giving me a card. I'm gonna go guys.
Thank you so much Thank you so much Dude this guy's amazing this guy's amazing your guest I'm so grateful that you came and and it's really nice to me. It's very weird to meet you on the air Thank you, man. Nice to meet you too.
Hey, everything is awesome. Everything is awesome. Oh Now that my friends is called a segue.
It's so good. It's like he's a natural radio personality Now since we're an audio medium you get to tell everybody who you are my name is Phil Lord I am the writer director of the like a movie with my friend Chris who has escaped this podcast somehow Probably say that all the time. I don't know what You guys got honored.
It's a free award. Incredibly I mean, I don't know why I should surprise you because the movie is brilliant I know, but it makes no sense if you look at the list of those people on that and have won this award It's like Brad bird and you know, just you senior says you seen your movie right I saw you belong on that list Yes, you're movies a bunch of poop jokes, but a row, but this movie What you did with this movie like this thing blew up like when I first saw the the first one sheet I remember when I saw the first one sheet and I was like, you know, like it's right now. No, I was like I'm in But I need to know more yeah, yeah, yeah, and then the trailer started coming out and I was just like okay Okay, okay, and I kind of avoided as many spoilers as I could good so that by the time I saw it and you get to the end you're just like First of all this came out of nowhere and I love it You know, it was just the way the way it was it was really hard for it We'd ever thought that we were gonna get them to keep that stuff out of the trailers Oh really because we thought there's gonna be it's gonna be impossible to resist They have a big movie star.
They're not gonna want to like keep it They're gonna they're gonna be so desperate to sell tickets and be so scared. They won't be god bless them It really never came up They were like with it all the way like no, it's gonna ruin the movie is such a surprise right Yeah, and I think with with the voice actor star power you had I think you kind of had some leverage there too Oh, yeah, you could go, you know, we've got these other Hey, yeah, Morgan Freeman's in the movie like, you know, the guy's pretty close. Yeah, I know it's so funny I'll tell you who kills me.
I don't know. I'll care. I own the movie.
I own it. I'm good. Okay, good good I can just watch Will Arnett on a loop god bless them.
I first of all have a huge Batman fan. He was born to play that part Just turn to the head of my bed. I'm done.
Oh my god, and like we wrote that and we're like you know who's obviously the best person for this It kind of has to be him and we had almost worked together before So we were a little afraid that like he was gonna say like once bitten twice shy like guys like screw you But he was we pitched it to him on the phone. He was like you're right You're right. I have to do that and he's she's that guy He is you know, he from an outsider's point of view.
He's a sweetheart in real life Like he's like the sweetest most like fun guy, but his clown as we say in comedy is that he plays a lovable douchebag Who's but who's with a broken heart if you look at Job in in Arrested that's just like a total dickhead who's Wanted the love of his father so desperately. They he'll do anything and he ruins Europe's the final countdown for you Forever and I love that guy and we're like oh he can be a jerk, but with like Desperate need underneath of it and and that's why I love that guy How many times a day when making this did you just go is this really happening to me? Oh?
A lot of it was just like, you know, yeah, all that all those recordings sessions with Morgan Freeman were crazy when we're like Trying to directly. I'm missing who had never done a voice character before No, and really didn't want to do this movie either Warner Brothers lean on him so hard that he was like, I guess I'll do it. I don't know what this is and I'll do it And he didn't know who the heck we were and thought we were idiots and And we were and we got great stuff from him anyway, and it was And he turned in this we took all these outtakes And it's basically turned that into his performance now you've got something pretty big coming up too If I'm not mistaken there's uh, there's rumors of foot There's rumors.
Okay, if you want to leave it there we can leave it there There's a lot of rumors where we've talked about it on our show The truth of the matter is that we are working on a ton of stuff in very embryonic stages and some of that stuff is gonna happen The son of it some of it is not and I am oh my god ladies gentlemen. I have a special guest He's going to announce his name right now, and it is here Chris Miller in the podcast Chris Miller has had about twice as much as Rick is missing both of them here You guys have got to be riding on pure adrenaline right now. We're pretty excited because we Got to hang out with some film luminaries just now and it was pretty fun.

Yeah, they're paying for like some kind of internet bandwidth or something It's not nothing. There's over there, but that that those with their google searches. Yeah, it's a muter What What kind of movies are in you guys's wheelhouse that you just like to watch?
Oh That's interesting I got to say the three amiga is just because it's we've always been talking about Our films of John Landis are definitely I know and the Kentucky fried movie which is like something I saw when I was nine years old I know and it seems and I very sexy and I watched I watched it and people's and And I remember like the opening frame is somebody just saying the popcorn you've been eating has been pissing Yes, and we all go went crazy or like this is the best movie I've ever seen in my life. How can you do that in a movie? And that was from a time.
I mean They don't make movies like that like that and Amazon women on the moon. You just don't see So insist press comedy movie The last one because the internet is now the internet owns it very much. Yeah, people could do sketches all the time You don't need to go to the movies to see those things anymore.
Okay, so here's your next question. All right I love questions guilty pleasure movie. Oh, I got a bunch Chris you go first.
No, you're going to pick one You've got a bunch. I'll never stop. Okay, these are from my childhood.
How are the duck? Okay, that's a bold choice. That's not a lot But an actual guilty pleasure movie.
That's actually pleasurable the Robert Altman pop-out film. I just watched it last week I just watched it last week. Wow And the octopus fight is However, the songs are wonderful.
I can't believe it hasn't been made into a stage production I can't believe they haven't made a Broadway production Great great great pennies from heaven another movie that like Steve Martin Steve Martin great movie for like seven minutes at a time Not so great at all in one sitting. I like a lot of things that are really underrated like Star Wars and the bells True Nobody appreciates the Beatles you guys are really good They're really good The cutting edge let's let's talk about movies from our childhood cutting edge. That's My wife was watching It's a good it's wonderful to pick Yeah, memorable wonderful film No, my wife was actually watching it on cable the other day.

I'm like Pack rim are you watching again? Yeah? And wouldn't like the Transformers and one of my top 10 favorite movies.
I had to sit through Twilight with her She likes giant robots and I was like this Terrible but you know what for revenge. I'm going to take you to see Transformers with me because you made me sit through Twilight And we get through Transformers and she goes this is one of my top five movies ever. I'm like what is Never And the other four are the four films that we Exactly there you go and of course that thing you do because that's your favorite movie ever.
Oh, yeah, that's a good one. That's in there Then there's some good music in that film. Yeah, that's a good guilty pleasure Poppanks is in that film because it's not even a guilty pleasure.
That's a wane did all the music. That's right It's a wane to the moon. That's a wane was the band that made their music for the band Before anybody really knew who they were and nobody still knows They got the one stacey's mom stacey's mom.
That's the song. I heard she's got it going on. I have heard that rumor It's just here say you will see I can try to think of more guilty.
What about you guys? For me guilty pleasure movies. Oh jeez See I'm not used to having the we are I used to being the interviewer Here's a movie that's a guilty pleasure that I've not actually ever seen duets.
I like My wife and I on our first dating my wife and I on our first dating anniversary went and saw that because I used to host karaoke for a living Okay, movie. That was a good guess a great soundtrack great guess not a great part. I've not seen it But he would lose man.
He's he would lose and see we lose Can we just talk about it? He doesn't need the news. He's opening for buffet.
Oh Legend of Billie Jean. Now. That's a good flick.
Don't care. We are it bummed me up because it wasn't about Michael Jackson So disappointing. I felt like I was two hours of Quincy Jones talking about that moon walker She was not his lover and moon walker movie was about that.
I thought it was gonna explain it and it didn't it so didn't It's that we just talked about the short hair. I'm very confused super girl. Unfortunately as she was Uh, now my guilty pleasure has always been the 1980 flash court.
Oh, it's wonderful. Love that movie. Yeah, and we were talking earlier tonight Matthew Vaughan in talks to direct the remake.
I heard that and the problem with doing the remake is you can't improve on the original And you can't like I'm making play for the New York Jets because nobody's gonna believe they want a Super Bowl Water I'm sorry. I've got to get it awesome. Mr.
Awesome break dance done. Mr. Awesome break dance What guys?
What's this party is going off? This It's going wonder Is they're just gonna carry us until midnight and that's just Just you may as well call your wife say Fueled by Red Bull apparently I don't know I got I'm trying to ask questions. I'm trying to think of good questions.
Ask these guys. Don don't what's up. What did I get you for your birthday?
What did you get what did he get you for you? My brain is so fried right now. I can see what he did an hour ago Oh, yeah, that does actually bought me the film for my birthday last year now that's the gift that keeps on getting it is and it is because I could watch it in a loop.
I could honestly It on the hundredth viewing It's great, but on the hundred twenty-third viewing Tell me on the hundredth viewing it unlocks a bunch of secret You become a grade one feet and after that. That's all you have to do Tom Cruise is gonna say so much money Just watch it like a movie 150 times. Why not and the praise that this thing has created Like everybody's doing Lego now like it makes no sense.
It makes no sense But it's great, you know, it's like the truth of the matter is I don't mean to sound like a corporate shill But it's a great thing. It's so good for kids brains It induces creativity. It stimulates your left brain and your right brain at the same time.
You guys saved that company Oh, yeah, they were really hurt But if you look into it there were there was a problem that they were on the downturn and there's all of a sudden This resurgence which you cannot deny was was not fueled came before the like a I don't know I think you guys kind of put it on the next level I would say the production of the like a movie just when it started probably Invigorated every we did not hurt the leg. Oh, no, we we we have a Hippocratic oath A Hippocratic oath, which is do no harm. That's the first principle.
Do you know how I thought that was the prime directive It's not Oh the right directive is not an interference isn't it? Yes What are people doing while they're listening to our interview? Are they like so relieved because they're like finally I can finally finish this New York Times article Oh, these guys blabber on or they bring on the next guest.
I guess I'll hopefully I'll finish it by then More letters Jacob's twin most of them are most of them are going how much longer is this road trip that I'm on Yeah, right. This is about as informative as one of our Our commentary tracks. Yeah on the jump street.
Hey, check that out. We did that look. It was really cold that day or something I think I think with what I'm seeing right now your next commentary track has to come with a illustrator Oh, yeah, that would be great Yeah, they did The original Ghostbusters commentary.
They did that. I read right I mean was circling stuff on the screen and saying look right here and you can see what we did here. Oh my god That's perfect.
Did he pause it? No, you'd have to do that yourself. Replay.
Oh, man. That's a great idea. We're stealing the idea.
Take it I'm going to make a film and do that. Oh, you know, we could do it. We haven't done our super super duper blu-ray Lego movie commentary track.
That's true. We're going to do a commentary with film crit help Yep, the internet fan of the film internet super star. Yep.
He's gonna scream it And then but we should tell us rate it Yeah, for sure with a wake calm. That's a great idea. All right.
We're gonna put you like the mystery science theater thing I'm gonna email somebody right now. I'm gonna email this guy who will like or you do it like mystery science theater Where like your silhouettes are in the bottom corner and you can point it right exactly Yeah, I love that show that show is so good. Oh, it holds up so coming back or no There were rumors like an eight eight episode come back But I don't know if they've ever locked it down.
No, I think they're I think they're content. Just doing their rift tracks thing They're whether it's so wonderful. It's it's the same.
It's in the same spirit as msdk We want to tell us straight the commentary on the deluxe Lego movie Blu-ray tell of that I didn't even did it like 400 years ago. Yeah Yeah, right Blu-ray and then this is how things happen in Hollywood make it happen oh Do you know who I am Yeah, well he does cuz you know don't you know you can literally say don't you know my name is the lord? Yeah That's right.
That's right. Oh my guys though you guys have some other important people to interview There's a huge line of important people at this milk festival standing right behind us Well, if you interview those chaps those chaps who won the the the award for Best Ensemble today. They're very lovely for some filmmakers that I met and whose names I remember, but I don't want to spoil them.
I saw the jury prize winner for cinematography at the bar. Oh yeah, I remember his name too, but again, spoilers. No spoilers, that's what I have.
So we've yet to get the names of the winners. We don't know who won. Yeah, we have no idea.
We don't know. We were up here the whole time. We have a lot of spoilers for you guys.
Oh my god, it's Chinette Bonds. What's going on? Who's saying voices carry?
Voices carry. Is that who did that? Oh no.
Who's that? I got it wrong. And we got it wrong.
That wasn't her. Oh okay, okay. That was the woman who's saying voices carry.
Hey karaoke and great job. Congratulations. You're wonderful.
I'm going to sing. I'm going to sing some David Allen Coe. Probably you never even call me by my name.
Something like that. Yep, that's exactly what that is. Chris and I will do a duet of islands in the stream.
Do you want to hear it right now? Do you want to hear us do islands in the stream? I want to hear you guys do it out there.
Would you speak back up? No, Chris and I are doing islands in the stream. Okay, I don't know the lyrics.
Oh you two are going to do it. I thought you meant you and her. No, me and Chris.
No, you're saying it too early. I don't know the words. Phil, the bit is, Phil sings really nice.
Yeah. And then when the chorus comes I go. Does anyone know the words?
Oh no, it's like that's true. It goes into death metal mode. Islands in the stream.
I can honestly say I've actually heard it. There's no way I've been screaming. How can we be wrong?
Sail away with me. Sail away with me. To another world.
To another world. To another world. To another world.
To another world. To another world. miyorum 1200T it's true to another.
Christy! There is a lawsuit. There is a lawsuit.
ICO Voieau! We have enjoyed my gun dancing apparently. Go away with me!
How can we be wrong anymore. And we've got headphones on. Sail away with me.
To another place. To another place. We rely on each other.
We don't edit the shows even if he recorded the bit works I'm sure there's no doubt in my mind and I will defend every email I get about this particular episode with the earbuds that's a mistake because technically We're even are we this is episode 296 actually Lost we've lost You're gonna need to get close to the microphone I know Oh Oh This is not the mix of the two songs. This is just just the one jiggle. Oh, hey, I ain't got nobody is not another song That's it the daily Roth version.
No, that's the Louis prima. There's a Louis prima. He did a medley also I was singing the daily Roth version in my defense is the better version I Got nobody Nobody Here's for me Nobody Here's for me This is such good radio I'm just gonna ride I Here comes the hard part I really hope that was this back to this particular I really really do You're License for this is there some kind of iTunes I will I will I will either confirm North and not I You could just do whatever you want and just put it on iTunes just like Guys, this has been a GD Pleasure Me out of it.
Go enjoy the This will be his audition tape. Thank you so much. Oh My Cheats are having my name a little bit of a queen is my bifilm name And lady of course Okay, can we get the wheels back please?
My cheeks hurt. I've been laughing so hard for the last I Don't even know how long Mrs. Pinn I mean we're recording wise we're at 10 minutes shy of two hours Downs back I don't know what to say dude I need a drink This I mean we definitely have to explicit tag this there's no other Yeah, yeah, yeah, I don't think you're that good of an editor You're good, but you're not that good me a long time to edit this.
I'll be back. Oh, my god Oh my god, I can't breathe Is there any recovering from this there? It's not there just isn't we burn through our run sheet and we convert completely through the run sheet This is this is the pure definition of insanity what we're dealing with tonight Do you realize we probably just spent the last half an hour?
Just letting them drive hanging out with the directors of the Lego movie who hijacked our show I mean The things could have gone much worse Oh Wow, here we go, okay We have an award winner We've actually had a couple of them actually because we had John Lennon this Oh I'm gonna let her sit down put on some headphones What are we doing I'm I don't even know where we are at this point are we are we still in the media rooms? There she is Alright Our next guest who's gonna help us get the wheels back on the show Yes, can you hear yourself though? That's the more important thing.
Uh, yeah, wow Alexander bomb back directed Frame by frame silver award winner tonight We have award winners on this thing. We may not win anything, but dog gunner. We will have award winners How are you feeling right as the adrenaline worn off yet?
I'm not yet not yet at all. It's been an amazing night super fun. Tell our audience about your film, please Bring my frame is a featuring documentary about four Afghan photojournalists who are building a free press in Afghanistan We're working in a post-tile band regime where the Taliban banned photography from 1986 to 2001 So it's a human character-driven story following their lives from running behind two side bombs to go into the grocery store It's giving audiences a different look in Afghanistan that they haven't seen before what brought you to this phone Um, I've always been really interested in films about challenging our perceptions of different ideas or cultures And questioning what we think about certain places and Afghanistan, you know, was a Huge one for that because we have such preconceived notions about what and who these people are You know very sensational in this media over the last 15 years about war and suicide bombs And we just really wanted to bring people to the streets and see normal everyday life and hear real human character stories to empathize with How long did you shoot it?
We were there for two weeks in 2012 and then two months in 2013. Oh, wow So this you with deep on this thing over a long period of time. Yeah, yeah, and then we were editing all of 2014 So was this the premiere of the film?
Where's it shown before we premiered itself by Southwest? Very nice. Yeah, so that was about a month ago, and then we're on to our international premiere hot docs Hot docs is coming up just right around the corner.
Yeah I'll have there next week And that is going to be where for for our listeners that may be in the area Toronto Yes, I don't really excited be nice and chilly up there for April. Yeah, I guess uh Did you just like freak out when they announced your name tonight? It was really exciting.
I mean The presentation of the award just really spoke to they explained the film before they gave the award Oh, wow, and it was really amazing how they talked about it So it was right in line was what we're trying to do with the film, you know giving audiences a look at Afghanistan that they haven't seen before So it was an honor to get the award because there's been such great Award winners before in past years and so this one was just huge for us distribution possibilities Yeah, we're in the works with that right now It's only been a month since our premiere so those conversations are happening right now If people go to frame by frame the film back to them and sign up for the newsletter then we can keep people posted about where it's going next But um, yeah, hopefully we'll play here again on Saturday or Sunday Because we won the award right because they they do replay those films If you had if I just gave you carte blanche and said you tell me Where you want this film to be shown what who would who would you pick to be that Top Top wish list distributor and how distributor audience Let's start with distributor. We'll go to audience after that um distributor I mean whoever gets it to our core audiences. I mean the audiences that we want to reach are at Dallas I mean we've been really Really lucky to film our have the film show first at Austin and then we went to Atlanta and Cleveland and Ashland and here in Dallas I mean these are great places to have bigger conversations about what we're thinking the narrative of Afghanistan Why we think we do about this place and talking about free press and why it's so important for Afghanistan right now So I think Dallas is perfect.
This is exactly what we want to do One thing that we were talking to somebody else about earlier and he was talking for his documentary He said he would love to see somebody like HBO documentaries take a hold of it Do you see this as as an area for someone like HBO or is this something that you would see more Theatrically that people would need to see um, it just depends right now. It's everything's up in the air So I don't really know exactly what's gonna happen But um, I think all those conversations that are happening right now We're just trying to see what the best fit is because we have to be true to the story and be true to film and get it to the audiences that we really carry about And we have whatever distributor offers that that's what the way we're gonna go Have you had any chances to see other films while you were here? I saw barge the jury award winner and that was amazing.
I heard such great things And that was really excited to get to see that one any films that you didn't get to see that you wanted to um Yes, I mean so many it's really hard because you're here as a filmmaker and trying to meet every one at the same time So a lot of them pretty much all of them I mean if there's over 160 films to see yeah, there's a lot I mean, it's just and it's so rapid fire everything's moving so fast. Yeah, I really wanted to see Jasmine I mean, I still haven't seen the look of silence um, which it kills me. I really want to see that film So I still haven't seen western But I did get to see cartel land recently if you haven't seen cartel land We actually talked to the editor of that last week.
Oh, very intrigued by him That's an amazing phone All right shameless self promotion give it all out again websites social media give it all because that's what we do Nice. It's a frame-by-frame There's the film and it's frame-by-frame-to-film.com Follow us on Instagram if you want to see photos of Afghanistan that you haven't seen before And that's that frame-by-frame doc that's our Instagram handle Alexander bomb-box. Thank you so much for coming to hang on with us go enjoy the evening because it's it's just getting crazy in here All right, congratulations on the award absolutely congratulations I would just be walking around with it in my hand all night.
I don't maybe that's just me. I don't All right, we're still moving on I think we have a repeat guest I think we have another guest with us right now And we remember her I said we had a repeat guest Talk right into it for me if you would there. There you go.
There she is Hey, we from Thunderbrook to heavens is back with us Well, I thought I should drop by because we're totally excited that we won the audience award up top Amazing and you guys so they're gonna re-show it what then Sunday. I think they're showing it tomorrow. Oh tomorrow Check it out outstanding.
We had one of your cohorts here earlier. Yes, Tanner beer Tanner was so great. See such a great guy He knows everyone because he keeps in touch with everyone.
He's so personable. I we could all learn a lot from him When's the adrenaline gonna wear off without Thursday? I mean thank goodness.
There's this party going on. I think separate ways earlier on karaoke very one of my favorite Jordi songs by the way. Well, it's the best.
I mean, yeah, do the video the guys put the keyboard on a wall I mean what else do you need? You can't beat it. So it's it's my go-to at karaoke And Devon is a friend of ours the guy hosting over there.
Devon's a great guy. We love him to death I just I can't really imagine how exhausted you guys are because you guys have literally been going strong for a week now Yes, because it's been a week since the premiere and driving back and forth. I'm from I live in Austin So I've been going back and forth and coming to this tonight.
You know, I I found out about it I had to rearrange my schedule like I'll be there I can't wait. I didn't even know what we were getting. They like to you know, they like to keep a little bit of the pride They let you know you were winning something, but you didn't know oh really So we saw the butterflies in our stomach like where are we gonna get and the first thing that we thought we could get we got Yes, so we can like relax and enjoy the rest of the so who is to keep the award?
I think Tim Scals is gonna put it on his shelf Yeah, he already he already It should it should be like the Stanley Cup where you just like everybody gets it for a day And you get to take your picture with it and stuff. I mean, I did get a picture with it earlier. Got to meet John Landis Very excited about that crashed our podcast for like five So gave us a give us a heart attack And how great is that?
Like to be to be able to see him win that award in person. I mean how special is that? Absolutely And first of all, I need to say to you guys you guys are the ones who are going to be extremely tired by now I'm not gonna confirm nor deny that I want past somewhere in this festival the on air light is on Yeah, we've been going strong.
There they are again. Yeah, I mean, that's what we do You know, and we've been just having so much fun. We're running on pure adrenaline right You know because I have a day job too So my day starts at five o'clock in the morning and I've just all day I've been like it's a time to go home.
It's a time to go home yet because I you know I'd go meet up with Chad and then get here and get the gear set up and we just we love this festival We love it so much. We've had so much fun. They take such good care of all of us Absolutely, and we're so excited to be a part of it.
It's definitely the best place for us to premiere Thunderbrook the Heather And premiere you did my friend so many good reviews. We are so over the moon right now. I can't even imagine what like I I would just have a blinking cursor in my head just processing.
Please look constantly. Hey, here's another good review I feel like a broken record, but we're just so the best broken record ever. Yeah, I think I'll take it Thunder broken records Hey That's I've told worse jokes than that on the show.
So you're fine. Go enjoy your evening my friend or continue to you Already been enjoying. Thank you for being here and plugging us.
Thunderbrook the heavens. We're so happy about this. I didn't do our baby.
Good job Congratulations And another repeat guest so far repeated from earlier today and we're going to get more time with him Tell everybody I'm Jorge Guterres director of the book of life and I'm a lot drunker than before A lot I don't think you're in the minority in that statement Well, I think we are the more the sober ones are the minority right now. I don't drink so believe me I want you real bad and he's not driving so he wants to I don't care You know, he's got to deal with his wife not me, you know, and she's got to drug without me more than one occasion I'm not saying she hasn't I'm just saying I know I was there Uh, I don't know if you saw this earlier But the directors of the Lego movie just hijacked our show and it was Oh My cheeks my cheeks still hurt from laughing as hard as I laugh. They're amazing It's just been such an amazing night like nothing The bar is so far set for us that we're ready for next year now That's just I want to go to there now But now we get to spend more time with you because how did honors go?
I went good I was supposed to say a bunch of stuff and they wrote it down for me and I decided not to read any of it And so I think it went pretty good Well, there wasn't being, you know, broadcasts Yeah, yeah, it went really good here director. You don't have to improvise. It's fine And I've been a huge fan of chris and phil my whole career so To have you know to be able to give them an award.
That was amazing. And they're showing the movie tomorrow morning Yep right across the street at the Angelica Uh, Don actually bought me the Lego movie for my birthday last year. Oh Which was great and It's just I love so much of the animation that's coming out now we talked about your movie the book of life on our live show Just how it's become Cool again.
Well, you know what's crazy is we are now of a generation where we grew up with the Pixar movies Yes, the Pixar movies are so amazing that we are spoiled we we kind of are but for me I'll always be a sucker for the hand drawn style I always will be because we're of that generation Yeah, you know, I remember when the fox and the hound came out and and I cried like a child which I wasn't child was seven But yeah, uh it just But at the same time you see movies like your movie and the Lego movie and the Pixar stuff and you think to yourself Where does it go like what it's like we think we hit that pinnacle and then you find that next level That sky's a limit, you know the technology now I mean before you could do anything, but now you really can't And any style and any style I mean you look at your movie the book of life that I don't know 15 years ago We could never made that movie like it the year just the 3D rendering alone in your film just I just found myself like oh close your mouth because it's taping open while you're watching this movie Because it's so beautiful and And again, we we talked about this before the fact that you guys are local you're right up the street and Texas film has it just keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger Well, and you got to remember Texas is kind of a home for a lot of big filming I mean fans maligues here Robert Rodrigues is here with your link ladders here. I mean this is not This is not normal not every steak and say stuff like that and and really you can just take the corridor from Dallas to Austin Yeah, and that just that corridor alone I have you got so many great filmmakers and when you see as yeah, you mentioned him just a moment ago And who I'm a huge fan of oh yeah, we were actually we had the iPod on random on the way over here And one of the tracks from once upon a time in Mexico came on we got to talking about that and and I've got a personal connection with that myself I'm friends with Tina LaRiva I would I grabbed well, but his daughter and I would at the same high school and I I officiated his daughter's wedding so yeah And talk about what are the coolest hats on the planet and he's a good actor And that's for auto and Got his head blown up one of the nicest and he was handy from Peewee's playhouse And one of the nicest guys in the world You know Yeah, during the the mimic error. Oh, I okay.
I thought mimic at the Granada theater I remember you tell me but Anything any movies ever coming out that you're just like ready for like right now Well, I think like every freaking human being on earth that star wars Just just when I was done like You turn it up, but she know when I thought I was out they bring me back. It's even like that when I you know Everybody was like you gotta see it. I'm like, yeah, I like cross my arms.
I was like I couldn't be press play two minutes later tears She's either I was literally like I don't know we are Well, did you see did you see the that there's a guy that actually took both of the teasers and cut them together into one long trailer? And it just looks about face-to-face. I'm talking to a friend of mine.
What's amazing with this guy didn't with it? I Eight months from tomorrow. I know and you know this we we were joking for two years that this was gonna be the year that nobody has any money Yeah, because of all the movies that are coming out the new mission impossible trailer.
Oh, yeah Are you kidding me on the Batman Superman trailer? Oh There's God that's next year. So I'll have a little bit of money all like all my dreams from when I was 12 years old.
They're all coming through Didn't you hear me? Oh, yeah, the the final hunger games is coming out too. Oh, yeah, I mean I know I'm coming in late.
I'm finally here sitting down taking a breather I'm on these things for about five minutes for a two-hour show usually when I do these things But you know, I want to go back here to the book of life. You had some incredible star power I just keep headed out with this character. I thought you how would he look like and everything like that Oh, thanks, and again, I saw that 3D to our great friends at out lighting in great market absolutely If you're looking at our website the co-bosspodcast.com.
That's our website I gave it a great review because it was colors in a way that I've never seen before you The color the look the storyline you hit it out of the park and I was a fan. I still everybody Family-friendly movie this would be perfect for the entire family First date night you name it even though it's a cartoon who cares Go see this thing and I was so impressed and it's an honor just to be able to talk to you sir Thank you so much. You know, it it one of the weirdest things that happened with the movie was Teenage girls love the film.
Oh, yeah, and it became a thing where You know spoiler alert for anybody who hasn't seen the movie. It's kind of a love letter to Being macho by being honest and by being heartfelt and by being earnest and you have a very strong female lead character in the film as well and and we live in a world now where I think all the gender or stereotypes can be questioned and My grandfather used to say to me and this is a big deal to me was a really macho guy Can fight everybody, but a super macho guy can walk away from a fight And that became my theme for the movie. It's there's nothing more manly than controlling yourself and what I really really dig is You have this beautiful film like just it just looks gorgeous But there's meat behind it.
Oh, yeah, there's a strong story there that You captivate every audience you've got the kids that are gonna sit there and watch it in the wow This looks amazing and you're gonna get the older the crowd that's gonna go you know what this guy's great story too Well, that was that was the intent from the beginning. It was Like you I love 2D films and the best ones were the ones that were gorgeous But underneath there was a big heart and a big message and so in book a life I always said it's a cake and the frosting will be delicious now colorful and every kid will want to eat it but we're gonna stick And all this Protein in the film and you're not gonna notice, but they're gonna learn something and you got robbed by the academy You should got nominated. It was a it was a review Let me ask you this Especially with Zoe Saldana's character.
I saw a lot of her in that. Do you Is it more of a matching the voice to the character or the or the design of the character to the to the voice actor? Well, we we designed the whole film before we knew who we're gonna cast and then after we designed my wife designs All the character all the female characters.
I designed all the male characters We had a sort of a dream meeting where we said okay now that the character to design who would be our number one pick And I'm a huge Zoe Saldana. She's a hurrah. I mean she's and you know what columbiana a great film a lot better than it had to be in my personal opinion Yeah, and Zoe honestly is Typecast as a strong Personality because she's so strong and real life So you are you're letting someone basically shine out what they're really good at because that's what she is I mean she's a tough girl She's very very tough and then same thing with Cheney Tatum.
It was one of those You know you have the a Luna who's a very romantic very earnest guy and to me it was Okay, we want to make this love triangle work. Who's a guy that Every dude wants to hang out with but every girl wants to Really hang out and every guy doesn't want his girl hanging out with exactly And so when we picture when we picture in the movie, uh, you know, he loved he loved it and at the end he said uh Jorge, uh, you know I'm not Mexican, right? And we laughed and laughed and laughed and I told him look you represent your captain Latin America You represent the slavness of every Latin guy And he he went for it and same thing with ice cube, you know what when I first picture to him He looked at me and was like are you sure you want me to do this?
He'd never done an animation He was really skeptical in the beginning and then he fell in love with it And Channing Tatum he's like he's on my list of Guys I I want to be able to hate but can't Exactly. He just see he's just that guy that he does all these really cool things and he He really gets the whole celebrity thing kind of like to me Steven Amel from arrow is that guy? Yeah, he gets celebrity and what it should be used for and I kind of see Channing Tatum in that same category and and he makes fun of it, you know He makes fun of the beefcake persona he has and I remember early on when I you know When I saw magic Mike It was not the film I was expecting And I remember when I first met him I told him magic Mike is the citizen king of male stripper movie And they're doing another one and they're doing another And I got the lead role That's called magic Mike not break dance don't do different films Although I think we need to have a Photoshop job done of the breaking poster with Don on it Consider it done Oh, I'm just I don't know about you.

We didn't think we were I wasn't sure coming into tonight That we were gonna top last year's iTunes exclusive show, but we blew it out of the water. I don't think it's close Respect to any of our guests from last year, but tonight we now have we now have set the bar for the For the biggest celebrity ever on the show and we got serenaded with islands in the stream by the directors of a Lego movie Believe me. That's all over Facebook.
We got to thank every but Chesa Camoon Julie Pister from Lemons and The director James Yeah, everybody involved in this deal is a high-quality human being oh my god Let me check on one thing hang tie for a minute. Oh What oh no no done done done done Everybody involved in the Dallas International Film Festival has been so good to us Indeed a lot better than we ever really deserved to be treated and the the amount of latitude that they've given us. Yeah It's been you know just go do what you guys do and it that speaks volumes to me As a podcaster it speaks volumes to me about the level of trust they put in us And we get to spend We get to we get to share a room with one of our dear friends Devon Pike who's been hosting karaoke all night Also a quality human being absolutely Don's been working so hard book because we didn't book the guests.
No don't did it All of this all we did is sit here and run our yaps and and let the directors of the Lego movie just go nuts or about a half an hour This was not booked ahead of time not ahead of schedule nothing was There was no phone calls made no emails sent It's just so many people had so much fun and the amount of love that we've gotten You Thank you, sir, is that your hair is fantastic. Is that what you just We're getting the director of the depth James over here. Oh fouls is coming over And that's we've been trying to get him for the second year in a row now and on a high And the athlete extraordinaire we're less than an hour from the lounge closing down for the day If you have never had the chance even if you're not a member of the empire that lives in the Dallas Fort Worth area If there's a film festival near you experience this Oh, you could do far worse if you're a fan of film at all You will find something at a film festival.
I mean, I'm trying to kick in myself in the butt for taking this long to do to be a part of Yeah, me too me too, you know, and I come from where the for Lauderdale lost all this film festival happens Which is a big deal. I mean, this is our wheelhouse. I mean, this is firmly in our wheelhouse We should have embraced this years ago to be able to commune with people who are film fans and talk film And now we are now joined By the guests we've been working on for over a year now and he's finally going to sit down with us One of the most quality human beings I have ever met in my life James Faust welcome sir We're saving the best for last year Quality I love quality.
Oh, and you're and you're a professional athlete, you know, uh, yeah, I revealed last week I'm an athletic director I'm an athletic supporter. I knew that was okay. So you have to settle a bet for us.
Yes What is the farthest distance you've walked without somebody stopping you in the last nine days? Um Not counting crossing the street from Mockingbird about that. I'd say probably 22 feet.
Oh, I had it at 10 Because I saw you last night. I was getting ready to go into Lone Star Holy Ward. You were coming out He had a gift bag that was a Star Wars gift bag And yeah, how many times have you watched the trailer be honest right now seriously?
I'm watching it now. No In your it's up here. I've actually watched it 12 times and actually at our morning meeting We have a morning meeting every day for the staff and I give a speech at the end with our CEO and president We kind of ended thing and I went yeah Whatever I'll have to say there was in the good job and has anybody seen this trailer Devon showed it like rotten ever we started to have dissected this thing and that that Bobo rope Whoa that Bobo robot is real and I watched and today I even watched the Star Wars thing in Anaheim to see JJ Abrams.
There's a god in my world Well, did you did you know that did you read that story yesterday as all the people were waiting in line to get in for celebration He bought 1500 people pizza. No, it did not. JJ did that yesterday And it was like right after that it was like here's the trailer and I was like Alias man Alias.
It's good. Oh, thank you And see that's why I couldn't watch lost because Alias was still on and I can't do two JJ Projects at the same time. We're just watching Felicity and Ruger.
It's gonna be good I have the honor of sitting next to this gelman last night For the uh the centerpiece film. Yeah me and her on the day and girl that that will make you laugh and make you cry if it doesn't your comedy Yeah, I actually brought me I brought tissues for that. Yeah, you did and also that That in Thunderbrook they have in my best two of this thing.
I you can I can't say which one's better They were I'm glad you enjoyed Thunderbrook the heavens was a film I saw over a year ago and the fact that it came back in one I personally want to thank you for bringing that film. Oh, thank you. That is the best film I've seen you share It's great.
I was just floored by that it actually it tracks so well that it started winning the audience award after its first screening And nothing only one of the movie came close and that was this isn't funny, which is a great film Wow, but next year we have to get the Raiders video That's it. We have to get that one next year. We're showing Raiders again Are okay.
Yeah, we're showing Raiders again But I'm talking about like the video that those kids did. Oh, yeah, we'll tell you do that We we want to be back next year and we cannot thank you enough for what you've done Thanks you guys for doing this every time. It's amazing.
It's our honor to be here. We have had so much fun Highlights for you from the festival. I don't I don't know.
Do you have to stay objective? Or can you can you can you talk a couple of favorites? We told you objective.
Um, I could be subjective as hell I'd have to say I'll backtrack tonight The whole the the journey to getting John Landis here was amazing and Having him out today and having him and surprising him was so great because we've been working on that I just one of our jurors worked on a movie with the producer of Max Landis's film and I just worked out so well And then Deborah Landis got involved and we just surprised John So that was a brilliant move handing these out to everybody and keep it quiet They were very they were very nervous about these pieces of people with if we got to get them on the carpet And not letting anybody know was like so and John doesn't check his phone So I had to call him John John Landis my buddy John Landis So he crashed our podcast. Oh, you did It was amazing. Yeah, we had the two guys from the LEGO movie and Landis all on at the same time.
Oh my god It was a battle royale just right in front of me You guys just want some sort of long-star Emmy just right now I think we may have or the podcast Emmy pot. Oh, so Landis is a highlight um The It's the opening night with Blight Danner who was really funny and sweet and sort of Smart and sort of bitingly cute and loved that movie. Yeah, I mean that woman walks her feet don't touch the ground Yeah, it's kind of ridiculously.
How old are you and how hot are you at the same time? To the audience of the Empire out there they get some big hitters here We we had Jorge Gutierrez on yeah, we're a book of life who I love. Oh, yeah He would there If you can't make it this year you You plan for making it every year from now on.
This is an incredible off great festival Well, that was funny because but Brad Booker who is producer was on stage tonight with introducing Jorge Brad Booker showed me little um Mexican toys on his desk four years ago And said we're making a movie and what are you talking about we're making a movie and those toys became what you see in book of life And it's amazing. I was in his office in Santa Monica when they opened it off real effects is based in Dallas But they have a Santa Monica office and we did that and went that's gonna be crazy And we got this new director and Guillermo Turra was gonna back in and go what are you talking about? And then four years later we get we get that movie so it's amazing Incredible how long are you gonna sleep starting Monday?
Um Or can you The body is trained to do certain things like I took the jury out for drinks last night And we went till 230 or whatever and then my wife's like are you serious? Yeah, I know My wife just goes he'll come home eventually. Yeah, we're all going out after when this place goes tonight.
We're going somewhere else um I would probably I it was my body's trained so I won't sleep too long I'll probably wake up around the ritual time and go damn it I don't have to be anywhere. I don't have to be anywhere. You can be demented.
I'll look around. I probably out The weird thing is I'll probably go to the gym. I got question.
Do you find the films or do they come to you or sediments? Yes That would be yeah what we we travel um I'll do five or six festivals in the year Toronto LA sometimes can Austin from festival Uh, Montreal maybe I mean I'll we'll go around the world. We go to different from festivals Sarah Harris I've seen your programmer and industry in liaison.
She's my doctor programming. She lives in LA now She's out there all the time a five-fest. Anything happens in the coast.
She's taking care of that And then films submit and so we in a night and we've built in nine years we built a reputation I mean the last year we woke me and heaven is for the last year this year we had The do a winner from Sundance me and her on the dying girl with it all these great films studios and people are starting to recognize what we do So things are getting easier, but at the same time. I'm always searching So when you already started planning next year? Yeah, I'm actually going to do so it's our 10th anniversary next year and So I haven't told Lee or CEO.
So we're doing his 10th 10th anniversary thing. What are you talking about? Yeah, so we're going to probably do something for 10 months So we have a lot we work we work at we were we're going to work with the AT&T performing arts center We have a new series that's starting next week actually Um with the director's series that was going to go through the year We've got some great movies.
We're Becca Maltese Falcon. I did get the email on that the other day So that's going to be it's going to be the start of it. I'm working on a 70 millimeter series that's coming up over the years It's going to be at the look cinema hopefully and we're going to we have a bunch of series that we're going to work on 10 year 10 months 10 years leading up to next year wow So yeah, I'm trying to think what's coming out.
Yeah, so um if it would if it were released later I would open with Batman Superman, but I don't think it's going to happen because it's not going to happen because they'd never do that Would you think of that trailer? I Will not say that I watched it, but I watched it well the digital's out there now. Oh, it is okay Sorry, watch that one with the Spanish subtitles.
Oh, no, but we've actually seen a high quality digital. It's out there I'm you know what after Star Wars, which I keep crying every time I see I don't know it's it kind of pales as a big I'm a big comic book guy and it's just sort of pales Hey, it's oh, it's really great. Oh, it's really hot.
No, it's not Star Wars, man, you really can't get out of that mindset Star Wars and I and Devin Pike run a great thing about it. Oh, yeah on Facebook today. Yeah Beautiful Scowl of justice.
I can't get out of it. It was great. I'm like, yeah, this is I hate Warner Brothers chill.
Yeah, okay I mean wait a week. Yeah, exactly you can you can say what you're right between Star Wars and ultra I mean this year might be the this year will be the end of my this will be a revisiting of my innocence between Mad Max Terminator Star Wars and Avengers and what I'm done. Oh, Jurassic Park and what you know what I'm avoiding trailer Supposed to be dropping.
I'm avoiding the new Terminator trailer because apparently it gives a huge plot point away. Yeah, I've seen it's it It's terminator what plot points are you looking for? It's the mother of dragons is Sarah Connor.
I mean I mean my worlds are colliding right now. Well, that's already happened though if you think about it Cersei's already played Sarah Connor in the TV series. Oh, I was so upset when they canceled that show because that Sarah Connor Chronicles was cool That was a great show.
Yes, sir. Is there any particular actors who you love to get here in the future? Yeah Samuel Jackson Neil Hydro one more time don't you don't even tease that I mean Sam Jackson somebody I've always wanted to support Because he's just a summon an airport once and he took the time to say hi.
Wow Tom Hanks same thing When we're AFI we're hanging out and he wasn't bought popcorn for his mom his wife and his son. I'm going wait a minute Why are you at buying popcorn at At the arc of light and no air was like Tom Hanks is buying popcorn. So yeah, I mean these are we've had I mean in Indirectly we've had Will Smith here It's been good, but yeah, I mean I'd say Sam Jackson's high on my list right now Really high on my list and I'm just hoping that we don't bring anybody old that might die again Because we keep killing people Jeez I feel bad.
I mean Lorne McCall has been here Sydney Pollock oh, if you get Sir Gronie a week. If you get Sir Gronie a weaver, I will be your best friend Off line we'll talk about That is his he's got he's got the big alien a DVD sense of the big alien head Oh man, he's got a bunch of signatures on it and that's that's his holy grail That would be like if you bought Prince here for me. I'd probably have a friggin heart attack.
Yeah, I you and me both I really yeah, I think that let's this log in distinguished. Yeah, I own every I used to with every prince album X fiance I don't want to see what she is, but yeah, I just say I have an itch Then you and I definitely need to talk Yeah again, thank you so much. Thank you guys for doing this.
I really I love having you guys out for this This is natural and it's beautiful and I thank you guys And while we do is promote the actors and get their film the word out. Yeah, we'd love to be back next year if you'll have us Oh, yeah, totally. Oh, this is great.
Thank you so much This is an incredible experience to live her out there. We can't make it next two days You make sure you hit it next year. It's gonna be a big 10 year.
There's a breathless tomorrow Kit Carson thing tomorrow is gonna be beautiful. Yeah, we had him. We have actually we had him on last year end this year Oh great both times.
Yeah, it'll be it'll be I don't know the amazing time tomorrow I mean pay very that's the big thing for me tomorrow booze brothers and Kit Carson breathless. That's my things He'll enjoy your evenings. Are you more than earned it?
Thank you. My wife is afraid of what I'm gonna sing Thank you so much change guys the artistic director and just one of our favorite people All right Gary's back All right, we are we really wrapping it up this time Again, thank you to everybody at the Dallas International Film Festival. This has been Five years ago When this thing was just a thought in a conversation If you to told me that before this show turned five we would be covering the Dallas International Film Festival I would punch you in the face and tell you to go to rehab this is And not only that but to be the first podcasters to ever do a show at the Dallas International Film Festival We heard rumors that there was another podcast this year for some of the smaller films I'm cool with it.
No, we're all missing to get it in it. We have to think that man right there Gary The idea that's okay guys. I mean seriously.
He said got the idea and I'm though And he's and I asked you and he said let's roll with the let's see what we could do and it's just me working on it Working and we have steered the show in this different direction to what I thought you originally planned But I think we did it in the right way and can I tell you to me the biggest blessing of this thing that just humbles me so much Was some of the repeat guests that we've had? What did you talk to the director of The guy who won last year? He just walked by it's been such a blur.
I can't remember North and I um The number of people that a that have been repeat guests and B that have just said how great it is that they get to be on our show It's like no, it's the other way around and that's just such a blessing for me as somebody that we work so hard on this show And to see it pay off every once in a while is an absolute dream and we could a lot start up people and Five years from now they could be accepting that Oscar and we could go we had them on this show from To doing events like this so did you ever think at one time you'd have the guys from Lego movie and jump and just at the same moment? Especially Serenading. Yes, that's what I still can and they were singing Iowa did the stream wall fouls was sitting here That's what was going on.
Oh, okay. Okay. Okay.
You tell me you to pee your pants. Did you pee your pants? I will neither confirm or deny that Thank you to the empire.
