It is Dallas Video Fest 27, last year's Video Fest was the first time we ever got to
do a Video Festival, and they were so gracious that they asked us to come back.
We're doing multiple shows over the next week and a half from the Video Fest.
Let's me introduce you to a couple of the characters you know and love so well.

time a little bit.

And so I got the 6 Plus and then I saw Don 6 and I'm like, this thing's going to be the size
of my phone.

Not really opening night because we opened two nights ago.

I would love to talk right into that thing so everybody can hear me out better now.

Okay.
I want you to talk a little bit if you would about what happened Wednesday night because
this was a first for Video Fest if I'm not mistaken.
Well, in many ways, it's the first and we've done many programs of live music with the
silent film a couple years ago, we did man with the movie camera with voices of change,
which was an incredibly inspirational night.
But we went to the incredibly large venue, the Dallas performance hall with the beautiful
beautiful hall.
750 seats.
Very intimidating to try to fill up and we rock the house.
The Dallas Chamber Symphony did an incredible, incredible job and interpreting a really, really
beautiful film.
You know, for Hitchcock fans, everything you love about a Hitchcock film is in this movie.
And yet it's a silent film.
The lodger.
The lodger.
And what I really sort of forgot about was how much German expressionism creeps into that
early silent film.
It really, really does.
You see all these windows that could be straight out of Calgary and you see so many things
that are just, you know, the sort of beauty of the silent era and all that great stuff mixed
in with all of the kind of suspense that you come to see later on, mixed in with, you
know, the language of silent film.
It's really kind of an amazing thing.
And it showed a lot of people that I've heard people call him kind of a one trick pony
with the whole thriller thing.
I'm like, then you haven't seen the lodger because it really shows the range of him as
an artist and to have that live orchestra there with a whole new score.
Yeah.
That was just, it was, it was thrilling to me on multiple levels because as a musician
myself, you know, like they talked about it in the media roundtable, if you screw up,
okay, go back to bar 14.
You can't do that.
The movie is rolling, son.
You've got to roll with it and they did an amazing job.
It really was, it was inspiring.
I totally loved it and I know that everybody there had the same sort of thing.
It's like you're watching the film and then you kind of creep down and watch the auction
and then you go back and forth and it's kind of like watching a football game at AT&D Stadium
and I'm looking at the screen and I'm looking at the field because I've, and you're, you
know, I thought I was the only one because I found myself getting so enthralled in what
the orchestra was doing.
I was like, oh, wait a minute.
There's a movie on it the same time.
And the percussionist, my guy, he played like, amazing, like 12 different instruments right
and all over the place and, you know, probably that was written for two percussionists and
he did it all himself.
And just the dynamics, the acoustics in the room, I love that room.
I love that room so much.
We were there for earlier this year for another film that was showing there for a different
festival and I can't say enough good things about the room itself.
It's not, you know, there's some places where you feel kind of, you know, it's like you
can breathe a lot and as a man of size, that's, that's something that concerns me.
But sitting in the seats where are very comfortable, you had room to breathe.
Everybody was great.
Talk about addressing the crowd when you came out in the beginning.
How was that for you to be in that room on that night talking to that huge room full
of people?
Well, the other thing is that I'm not used to having a spotlight.
And so, you know, I really, you know, I was a rock and roll drummer a long time ago and
I've forgotten what it's like to talk to an audience and not be able to see them because
you're...
Yeah.
They did darken it down pretty bad.
You're blinded by the light.
I mean, it's totally what that line is all about.
But the really cool thing was that, you know, we got a guy who did an incredible Hitchcock
of Person A's.
That was...
I was going to ask you about that.
Who introed you.
Right.
So I was able to have Alfred Hitchcock introduce me.
So it's like, that's a pretty cool thing.
And you had the picture of you that was parodying the Alfred Hitchcock Presents thing, which
was kind of neat.
A lot of great press coverage has been coming leading up to this weekend.
I saw a great picture of you.
I guess it was in California where you were holding up the film or even was it in front
of the code.
Oh, that was in...
That was by the bridge, you know, that was...
Oh, by the New Bridge Downtown.
Yeah.
For some reason, I saw Golden Gate in the background.
I was always going...
Because you go all over the place.
Yeah, I try.
So you do a lot of traveling, looking for films to add to Dallas video fests.
One of the things we talked about in the media roundtables that we did a couple of weeks
ago.
And thank you for having us out for that as well.
Oh, thank you.
I'm going to put you on a spot a little bit.
Okay.
You got a lot...
How many have filmed screening over the next week and a half?
If we include the two from the last couple of nights?
Somewhere around 150.
Wow.
Maybe more.
Maybe less.
I'm not sure.
But that's about there.
Is there one you're looking forward to?
I wouldn't say more than any other one, but one that you really think is going to be
the one that you really want the people to come see.
Well, you know...
Present company excluded because we have a righty director that's joined us.
That's playing Silent Partner right now.
Well, okay.
So, I want you to put your hand up and look at it and say, which one of these fingers
don't I like?
I saw that one coming in a mile away.
I've been catching up on 24, so the last season of 24 there, that kind of plays a role.
So it's a little close to me right now.
I'm not going to...
I can tell you, there's one film that to me sums up a lot of what we do and why we do it.
There's a film called Starship Throwers.
It's a documentary that it follows like three people who like take it upon themselves
to help feed people.
There's a teenager who creates these gardens and has inspired gardens all over the
United States.
There's a guy in...
Gosh, I forget where it is, but someplace where it's really cold.
Minnesota.
Right.
He's a retired teacher and he goes out every night and he feeds people and he's got refrigerators
full of sandwiches.
It's just incredibly inspirational and a guy in India.
That's right.
And to me, here's the thing.
When you watch that film, it combats in every one of us.
The cynicism of, you know, I'd like to do something, but you know, one could one person
do.
One person can't do anything.
It's like there's so much bad stuff in the world and you watch this film and you say,
you know, one person can make a difference.
Absolutely.
And I really believe, deep down, that the films you see at our festival help you make a
difference in the world.
When you see them, you understand, you have empathy for people, you've never met, you
see the world view of things that are totally unique and different and so my thinking is,
you come to the festival, you be inspired and you go home and you don't watch cat videos.
You go and you look for better things.
My wife might argue with you on the cat videos.
I don't know, but there are things out on the, that you can watch that can really inspire
you and change the world and make you think differently.
And one of the things I'm finding as, as I hate to use this phrase, as I'm getting older,
I'm enjoying the documentary more and more and more and more.
I'm going and I'm seeking out documentaries and maybe it's because part of me knows that
Hollywood's kind of Hollywood itself out for a while.
And I like seeing true stories about how people are making change and how people just,
the fascination in people's lives.
And like you talked about Starship Brothers, we saw that trailer at the media roundtable
and I was, I'm like, I'm in, and because people say one person can't change the world,
but one person can inspire another person and that person can inspire another person.
So technically one person can change the world, but we have to have that one person.
And I think we're seeing a lot more, especially in recent years, of stories like that,
of like, you know what, you can go out and do something.
The whole journey starting with a single step by day.
Exactly.
And to me, there are two reasons, and we have more documentaries this year than we've
ever had.
Really?
Way more.
And a lot of them just go through some things that I saw that I really were inspired by.
But I think they're two major trends that are kind of intuitively obvious.
Cameras are cheaper, smaller, and so you can connect to people a lot easier.
And I think the other end of that is that Hollywood films are so full of special effects
that they've removed themselves from reality in a kind of really profound way.
And I think that documentaries show a kind of, you know, truthiness that resonates to
our culture and that we sort of want to see.
And I love how you said that because that's going to transition us into something else
I want to ask you about.
This year's intro.
That's going to show before every film, every documentary.
We saw it Wednesday night.
You were gracious enough to show it to us at the round table.
I loved it.
I thought it was kind of, and I don't want to ruin it because I want people to see it.
I want them to make their own judgment.
As you said the other night, I want you to take from it what you see in it.
And what you talked about there kind of ties into that.
And it's a, talk about the young lady that did that for you.
Okay.
So Courtney Ware is, she's a great filmmaker in Dallas, actually there's a film of hers
we're showing in the festival and she's working on another film.
And she's just, you know, one of those people who you're going to hear an awful lot for
them in the years to come, she's incredibly, incredibly talented.
And so the film is a kind of vacillates back and forth between this woman in a studio where
these special effects are happening and as she's kind of walking out into the forest and
it kind of moves between the real and the digital world in an interesting kind of way.
And what's really wonderful about it is, if you come and watch program after program every
time you watch it, you'll see and feel it very differently.
Which is something that really kind of is great for me.
You know, I really stress over all of the little things, the design of our posters I really
love.
And that shows because the workmanship is so great.
Yeah, we get wonderful people and they just do amazing things.
I mean, today on the internet, I was looking on Facebook and somebody posted the intro
that we had from like 20 years ago that was made by DNA, you know, the guys who did Jimmy
Neutron.
Really?
They did this thing called, King, it was a mashup of King Kong and Big Text.
It's called King Text.
And King Text.
Mark that.
No problem.
No problem.
Is running around Dallas, say, you know, and he's like stepping on people and then he grabs
and he goes up to the big building with the lights, right, and the helicopters are spinning
around.
Somebody put that on YouTube?
Yeah, somebody put it on YouTube.
So it's been around for a long time, but it's, and we had David Lowry did an intro
for us one year that is also really beautiful.
We, I had a high school student from Green Hill doing intro for us.
A local private school here in Dallas.
Yeah.
We have people who listen all over the world, so sometimes we have to remember that because
I forget.
And I got him a crew with a big crew, a great cast and a red camera.
And she's got this big crew of people and usually a high school kid like with all that
like would fold onto the pressure, but he was awesome.
I went to this shoot and he was totally in control and it's just, it's just a very beautiful
thing.

And just sort of the scope what we're doing this weekend, we're here at the Alamo
Drafthouse, which is really wonderful on Monday, which is Columbus Day.
We have a Native American film at University of Texas at Arlington in a beautiful new 4K
theater.
They've done a lot of beautiful work down there at UTA, all the brand new buildings, the
new arenas and stuff.
Great down there.
But this 4K theater is awesome and by the way, that's where I teach.
That's right.
I forgot about that.

I forgot.
Wednesday, we're going to be at the South Dallas Cultural Center and Wednesday, we're
bringing in Charles Burnett, who's an incredibly inspirational director who made killer of sheep.
And if you've never seen that film, it's just an absolute classic.
And then Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, next week, we will be at the Angelica on
Mockingbird and then Monday, we sleep.
And we'll be down at the Angelica next weekend as well.

The man, the man, Dallas Video Fest 27.

Howdy, joining us right now, Rebecca Rice, writer, director, we need to talk about Alec tonight.
And we do need to talk about Alec.
We're going to talk about it because we're all about shameless self-promotion on this show.
Great.
Well, Alec is actually the film and what it represents and what it tells people really is way beyond
shameless self-promotion.
It's a journalistic piece that focuses on events that happened here in Dallas, July 29th
through August 1st.
There were two things that happened concurrently.
The first was the annual Alec conference in Dallas at the Hilton Anatole.
And the Alec is, that's an acronym.
Alec stands for the American Legislative Exchange Council.
And Alec has been around for 41 years and a lot of people are unaware of how this organization
with its big political donors really influences our democracy and is buying our democracy.
And the people behind Alec are particularly the Koch brothers, Charles and David Koch,
big oil and gas people, big coal, big corporations, and they bring in legislators from state and
federal level to these meetings where they create model legislation that they want to
see passed.
And then they send these legislators back to their states and to the federal government
to get these laws passed.
And now models of Alec legislation that everyone will recognize, particularly in Texas today,
are the Restrictive Voter ID laws.
That's a big one.
Okay.
And we just saw a federal judge, a federal district judge in Dallas or in Texas rather strike
down the Texas Restrictive Voter ID laws saying they were unconstitutional.
This essentially a poll tax and disenfranchises particularly people of color and young people
for whom it is more difficult.
It makes it more difficult for them to vote.
Yeah.
Facebook lit up the other day.
Yes.
Yes it did.
Well Alec is also behind privatizing schools, privatizing prisons, the restrictions, trying
to create restrictions on the EPA that would, you know, get corporations out of being restricted
by environmental regulations.
And all of these laws and more like them are really, they're designed to allow corporations
to make as much money as they possibly can to the detriment of actual people.
And they don't want you voting.
So that's why these voter ID laws are happening all over the country.
I would ask what brought you to this film, but you're very passionate about it.
So I think that question's already asked itself.
Well, now I'll tell you what happened.
Oh, I'll go there.
There's more, please do.
Yes, there's more.
How I got involved in this film is rather interesting.
A dear friend of mine who is a political activist here in the Dallas area and she's also an actress
and she's in the very end of the film, she is an Alec expert.
She invited me to the second part of what happened during July 29th through August 1st here
in Dallas.
And that was a series of protests and educational events sponsored by move on, Texas,
CodePink.
It's another politically active organization and others across the state of Texas and nationally
to raise awareness of what Alec is, what they do, how we can counteract what they do.
And mostly it's raising awareness so people will know, get out and vote, get politically
active, don't let them take your vote, don't let them steal your democratic voice.
So I was invited to come to the first night of the protest and I naively asked if I could
bring my video camera.
Well, I got there.
I went a little early because the first night of protest, the Tuesday night, July 29th was
out on Market Center Boulevard out in front of the Hilton Anatoll.
And it was supposed to start.
I think it was at six o'clock.
I went a little early and I had years ago, I had worked AV at the Anatoll.
So I knew the building pretty well.
So I parked at the far end of the parking lot, took my little camera because as Bart said,
cameras are getting smaller, faster, cheaper.
Yeah, the technology is moving so fast out of you and you can not only can you shoot these
things, you can shoot them well.
You can and you can sneak into a building and not look like a filmmaker, which is what
I did.
So I went to the far end of the Anatoll and I just made my way through the building and
low and behold, I came across the Alec registration desk and I clandestinely started shooting
some footage.
They didn't know I was there and there were a lot of security people around.
By the way, Alec is a very secretive organization.
There was no press covering any of these events.
The Alec meeting, the protests on the street, the events that happened to counter Alec, events
that happened all week, no publicity whatsoever.
Not even in the Austin American statesmen to state that, to talk about the fact that Rick
Perry was a speaker.
Which for our people that are not from the area, the Austin American system is the major
newspaper in Austin, in the capital of Texas.
And their governor was speaking at the headliner at the Alec conference in Dallas, in July.
So, at any rate, so I ended up down there with my intent to just go hang out at the protest,
participate, shoot some footage.
But by going in the building and then shooting some of the registration desk, I accidentally
and didn't realize it until I got home, got some footage of Rick Perry posing with a
big corporate donor in front of these huge wooden carved elephants.
If anyone's been in the Hilton Anatoll, they have some beautiful art down there and they
have these two, like 20-foot tall carved elephants.
And of course, the Alec desk was right behind the elephants, so they like that prop a lot.
So when I got out of the building and I went down to the protest line down on the entrance
to the hotel, and I went, there was a police officer, Dallas police officer, there were
a lot of police in the area, a lot of police cars there, and a huge patty wagon.
I don't know if they had planned to take us all away or what.
I'm not sure why that huge vehicle was there, but it was.
So I get down to the protest and I introduce myself and shoot a little footage and then
I'm done.
So I'm going to go home.
So I start walking back to my car and I'm stopped by the police officer and the security
guard from the hotel.
Oh dear.
And they said, who are you?
And I said, well, I'm, and what are you doing here?
So I'm here with them.
I just, you know, I told them I'd shoot a little footage of the protest and what they're
doing today.
And I'm getting ready to go to my car and get home and I said, well, you can't come
on to the property.
You have to go back down there with them.
And I said, well, my car is on your property and it's on the other end of the lot here.
And I said, well, were you going to have to be escorted to your car?
So they escorted me to my car and made sure that I left the property.
They didn't know that I'd been inside already shooting.
Oh, wow.
But now I think, because I kind of played like I'm a little tourist walking around looking
at things and had my, set my camera on a table and shot, well, they're about to find
out.
They are.
So has this been screened at all or is this the first time that it's been screened?
This is the first screening.
Part of the voices heard compilation tonight at 7 o'clock.
Yes, it's the last film in the series tonight.
Voice is heard.
No, I literally finished the film, shot those four days, shot the counter-alloc protest,
the counter-alloc educational events, which happened in various parts of the city, including
SMU and the Pan-African connection, which is near Fair Park and in the African-American
section of town.
Of course, SMU is completely opposite of that.
And then at a place where we had a lot of people on Wednesday, July 30th, labor unions,
teachers unions, a full day of educational orientation of what Alec is doing, how they're
trying to privatize the schools, to starve the public schools so they fail, then you can
have corporations take over schooling in the form of charter schools and things that we're
already seeing.
Right.
So now, I do see that at the end of the compilation, there will be a Q&A.

Tell us about it.
It's a short film.
It is a based off of the script that I wrote actually for a competition.
Called Jamison First Shot.
And it was basically a competition to write a script that would be.
The winner would be produced by Kevin Spacey's production company
and Star Willem Dafoe.
Oh, well, that's that.
So I sent this in and thought, well, there's one that's going to get lost
in the million other submissions.
And I forgot about it.
And then a few months later, I got an email saying I was shortlisted
with six other scripts.
Nice.
So.
At that point, that's a winner.
That's a winner.
That's a winner.
I was like, oh, my God.
I'm going to quit my job.
I'm going to move to Hollywood.
I'm going to be able to tell my boss to kiss my-
Something or other.
Yeah.
Like I've always wanted to.
So.
But unfortunately, I did not come out on top of that one.
So that was little heartbreaking.
But a little later in the year, I had an opportunity to hook up
with a gentleman named Evan Connelly, who's a DP,
who was looking for a creative project.
And I'm like, well, you screw it.
I'll make it myself.
It'll be just as good as you know.
There you go.
And just like we talked about a minute ago, the technology has come so far.
And you can.
You don't have to be a millionaire anymore.
Exactly.
Yeah.
This was what we called an ultra-no-budget film.
Ultra-no-budget.
Yeah.
Kind of like this show.
Pretty much.
Exactly.
God.
So how long is the film?
It's 10 minutes.
10 minutes.
Okay.
I mean, now we're all, we're stepping all over each other here.
It's like a bad first date dancing in junior high.
But let's join you.

Are we making an assumption here?
No, I am actually in the film.
It's a pretty good ensemble cast.
It's a lot of funny character actors.
And yeah, I happen to be one of them.
I happen to be one of them who, you know,
he did a small independent film that Charlotte might have enjoyed.
It was called The Hunger Games.
Made about 13,000 worldwide.
Did not do very well.
I felt very bad for them.
Yeah.
Not one of my brighter moments for me.
You're doing what we got to do, right?
So what brought you to this?
Well, it's kind of difficult when the lady comes to you and says,
hey, I've got this script that's really funny.
I really think you need to do the role.
It was written for Kevin Spacey and Willem Dafoe.
But I'd really like you to step in.
And all by the way, I'm married to you.
You better do this day.
I'm moving.
I'm like, okay.
I don't like sleeping on the couch.
As the lovely and talton Mrs. Irving likes to say,
it's in the contract.
There you go.
There you go.
So, yeah.
So, you know, Kathy and I have been married for a while.
And you don't turn it down.
You just don't.
No, no.
And I'm glad I didn't.
The film is very funny.
I'm very proud of it.
And it's making the rounds of all the film festivals right now.
It's doing really well.
And we're so thrilled and honored to have it be a part of a video fest this evening.
So I'm reading a little bit about it here.
I almost busted out laughing just sitting in front of my microphone.
And I had to catch myself.
Guy breaks into a house.
He only speaks in depression era language.
Yes.
And it's modern times.
Oh, yeah.
Yes.
So it's like Edward G. Robinson in 2014.
Yeah, it's basically like a time frameless.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, see.
Yeah.
Exactly.
I'm in.
As you can imagine, the cops are completely baffled because they're modern day.
And so they call in a very old individual.
And Mr. Berkey, I assume.
And he's able to at least try to translate it in a hilarity.
At least he embraced the description of his.
I think when Kathy put out the call, the casting call, she said,
I really need an old cute.
Wow.
Wow.
Yeah, definitely.
And he nailed it.
And it's not even that moment of he's standing right behind me.
No, he is standing right behind me.
They just forwarded your mail to under the bus, Mr. Berkey.
Now, one of the things that we're seeing a lot, especially at film festivals,
is we're seeing a lot of these short films that start to catch a little bit of fire
and, no pun intended, and wind up as full length features.
Right.
Is that maybe the intent for this or is this kind of you sticking your toe in the water
and then seeing where it goes from there?
I think it's more sticking my toe in the water.
This isn't really, doesn't really have the legs, I think, to be a feature.
It was just a fun short film I did.
I write, I'm more of a writer than a director, really.
So I'm working on some, a couple of feature length screenplays and some other things than the works as well.
In kind of the vein of this style, or you just kind of just writing whatever comes to mind and seeing where it goes?
Yeah, that's usually what I do.
I always say I write the idea I have.
And most of the time it's a comedy, that's just the way I lean.
Sometimes I get like, I get a lot of twilight zone ideas too.
Which leads me to the question.
Which leads me to the twilight zone.
We're not crossing the stream.
That's scary to me.
Which leads me to this question.
Where did this come from?
Because I'm reading the synopsis and I'm like, I'm in.
But how did this happen?
I guess.
I was actually, I kind of had this character from a, sometimes things get kind of swapped around.
And I had this character from another piece.
It's kind of intrigued me the idea of like this kind of, like, totally out of time, criminal that kind of came in.
And everybody was like, what's going on?
So I kind of had that character in mind.
And it was another little piece that really didn't go anywhere.
So when I was trying to come up with this script, I just kind of took that character and made another little story around him.
So it's all kind of a rich tattoo history, so to speak.
Where within the voices are compilations?
Do you know where you lie in that two hour timeframe?
I do not.
Not a specific time.
I just, we're hoping for either the end or the middle.
We hate the beginning.
You want, it's that whole, and I don't know maybe if it's just because I've, I've spent my adult life in this town.
But it seems like living in Dallas, people love the words fashionably late.
And it drives me insane.
Like, if I go to a concert, I'm going to by be there when the lights go down.
I don't care who the opening act is.
I paid for my ticket.
I'm going to be here the whole time.
But unfortunately, the acts are usually fashionably late.
That's also a fair point.
But at least the audience should be there for them when they get there.
You would think.
That's all I'm saying.
So the voices heard compilations tonight.
The glass owl.
You know what?
I love different things.
I love it when somebody brings something different to the table.
And this is definitely bringing something different to the table.
It kind of, it almost reminds me of that.
One of my favorite episodes of the Batman animated series where they had the great ghost in it.
Where it was this anachronistic character.
He was also in a break in the bolt too.
So anyway, as soon as I read this, I was like, that kind of reminds me of that episode.
I love that episode.
What everybody has said about this film is they, I mean across the board, it's clever.
That's the thing that it kind of stands out because it's not what you would expect.
From one female writer and director, it's not about a struggling woman.
You know, terrible trauma.
What this is is just something that you wouldn't normally associate with a little 10-minute film.
And it really does stand out for that reason.
And this is Kathy's actual second film that she's done.
She wrote a film called One It's Your Time that won a lot of awards last year at Film Festival.
And that's what led to this second film.
Was that here as well?
Or is this your first time at Dallas?
This is my first time here.
One it's your time.
Actually, I wrote it was directed by somebody else who had it made.
It went to several festivals in Oklahoma and a couple in Dallas and did pretty well there.

And that said, and the trailer is pretty freaking epic.
You know, and how is that as an actor?
Because you film it.
And something I've always been curious about.
Curious about if I can learn to speak English.
That would be great.
As an actor, you're there.
You see it filming.
It happens.
But you really don't necessarily see it
until it's on screen.
Like, how does that differ for you as an actor?
When you, like, you see the trailer, and you're like,
I remember that, but do I remember it that way?
It's amazing because, especially if you're spending
a long time, like, on Hunger Games,
I was on set for 17 days, but they shot for six months.
So when the final product comes out,
I'm only on screen for maybe a minute and a half
with a dialogue and all that.
But we shot 17.
Wow.
And in the case of Wasteland, I was on set there for two weeks,
but I'm one of the leads.
So it's really, the contrast is this is so odd.
But, you know, when you do see it, it's kind of like,
okay, I remember doing that kind of.
Let's just say there was a lot of festivities going on
in Tirlingwood, Texas, where you shot that.
Fair enough?
Because there was nothing else to do
on the Texas, Mexico border other than drink a lot.
Drink Margareza and eat chili.
There you go.
Exactly.
You know what?
There was a lot of that going on.
I mean, I didn't have an internet signal there,
the entire time we were there.
Okay, now that might freak me out.
Yeah, you wouldn't, you can handle that very well.

He is a director of the Arnold Chronicles,
which will be also screening during tonight's,
I lost to my place tonight's voices heard compilation.
Just read a little bit about that,
but you know, your baby, I want you to talk about it.
Tell me about this, how long is the film, first of all?
Well, it's 13 minutes long.
Okay, fair enough.
And it's a 1950s period piece about two American Marines
who wander aimlessly through the American Southwest,
circa 1955 in search of meaning.
Wow.
You got all that in 13 minutes?
We got something in 13 minutes.
So what really kind of brought you
to want to do this short film?
I'm very, very interested in,
I always like to talk about the motivations
that directors have and what brings them to projects
and what attracts them to it.
Sure, my father was a Korean war veteran.
Okay.
And he used to tell me a bunch of stories when I was younger
about his experiences following that military conflict.
And this short film is really a homage to his kind of travels
throughout the American Southwest.
It's kind of got a beatnik kind of feel to it.
Okay.
Yeah, so that's what inspired all of this.
How long did it take you to shoot it?
Well, we shot it in Shreveport, Louisiana.
And I guess that was a crazy 48 or 72 hours.
I don't know, it was all kind of a blur.
It was all very strange too.
We had, I was living in New Orleans at the time.
I live in Houston and we had five crew members
and cast come from New Orleans.
We had two grip and electric from Nashville.
We had two actors come from Austin
and there was an actor in Shreveport.
We all met, it was very stressful and very magical.
And how long ago did you shoot it?
We shot it last summer.
Oh, so you've had time to really kind of get it
to what you want and you didn't have to?
More or less.
I mean, you know, the editor producer is in New Orleans.
Like I said, I live in Houston.
So we've gotten what we have.
We call it a work in progress.
And actually, the plan now is to take this
and return it into a 30 minute pilot,
which I would like to shop for television.
Absolutely.
All right, well, that's going to leave me
to do another question then.
I love it when you can feed me
and I can form questions from it.

You say you want to develop this into a pilot?
That is correct.
Everything's even, okay?

Where does it air?
Well, how about on the history channel?

I mean, this is, you're asking me
some speculative question out of the blue.
So why not?
Yeah, I just, you know, if you had your brothers,
that would be it.
And would it be something that you would want to do
is more of a, maybe like a half season kind of show
or would you want like a, like a 22 episode season
to work with or just as a mini series?
There's a couple paradigms.
One is, unfortunately, you're reading my mind.
I kind of love the TV series Walking Dead.
I don't know if anyone...
Chad's a big fan.
Huge fan.
I'm a pretty huge fan myself.
I feel like I'm too far gone to start watching.
Not at all.
And I think the cool thing about Walking Dead
is really you can start on season three episode five
and you'll be fine because it's got this weird
kind of non-linear narrative to it.
It's just each episode is a standalone episode.
Now was this, did we just miss the season premiere?
No, it's Sunday.
It's coming Sunday.
Yeah, I will definitely be watching it.
So yeah, I would love to try to,
I mean, actually Rebecca Rice is the one
who gave me that idea.
Oh, really?
So yeah, her on just a little while ago.
Yeah, so, you know, the concept, the script
was started being written a while ago.
And so it was just, we shot this piece
and now we've got it in the can, as they say.
And so it's evolving and people have told me
it's more commercial than other things that I've done.
And it's definitely taken some steps forward
much more than some of my other projects,
which I would be happy to talk about.

Well, I worked, shall we?
Okay, I worked on another film for 10 years called Substance,
which has barely gotten off the ground,
even after all of that time.
And it's a slacker road movie with lots of music.
It's about an indie rock band from New York,
traveling to the South by Southwest Music Festival.
Nice.
It was branded in Dallas for three days.
No money, no resources.
They'd be friend, three new verish scumbags
who get them embroiled in an underground drug ring.
The band goes on the run to New Orleans.
I've been working on that for years.
So this whole other project, the Arnold Chronicles,
was materialized because I could not raise enough money
to do substance.
So that's a back story.
Is this, so is the Arnold Chronicles,
some of you're kind of hoping we'll springboard you to substance?
I mean, honestly, I've been in this industry a while
and I'm learning that, and I find it very tragic.
It puts a tear almost in my eye.
But, you know, people like success.
And it's heartbreaking to me,
but they don't really want to get behind.
People don't want to take a big risk.
Right.
And I find that strange.
I don't even know how to...
We've gotten to such a safe zone
with the way Hollywood works now.
If it's not, you know, if you can't guarantee me 150 million,
yeah, if they can't see the world, they're free to the risk.
To me, with the danger you run with that,
as you get into this rut.
And I am all about films and television series
and media that kind of bucks that trend.
It says, you know what, look at this, this is good too,
and you need to pay attention.
I think that's our culture, though.
And I don't know why we're here.
And there's definitely some positives, you know.
I will definitely say I've watched two of the Iron Man movies.
They're good.
I watched Superman, Man of Steel, I believe.
Yes.
That was excellent.
So there's not, it's not all bad.
Oh, no, I agree with you there,
but I think that there's just not enough risk anymore.
Risk and or, I don't know, our culture
is just really keyed into, you know, tent poles.
And I don't know why that is.
And it's just an interesting phenomena
because my favorite films are from the 70s
and very few of them were tent pole films.
But that's a philosophical question.
I think you can say, well, we'll put philosophical elements
into Superman, Man of Steel.
And Zack Snyder was the director of that.
He's a phenomenal director.
Oh, I love that.
I will never diss that movie, because it's just so good.
But right now he's got a pass with me because of that movie.
Yeah.
Because Superman Returns was so bad.
And Chad argues with me all the time on this.
It had good elements to it, but by and large,
it was something you'd rather forget.
So with all the criticism that people were giving him
about what he's doing with Batman vs. B Superman.
I'm good.
I'm good, because he has a pass with him right now.
But that is definitely an example of, you know,
it's not really risk averse because there's
so much money on the line.
But I mean, they're not going to take that money
and make 10 films.
I don't know.
It's a strange phenomena.
And, you know, it's been going on for a while.
And I will give a lot of props to Stanley,
because he suffered and struggled for many years.
And now many of his ideas are coming to the screen.
So it's all, but I mean, the culture
wants these 10-pole movies.
That's my opinion.
And as Kevin Smith said on a podcast recently,
I'm so glad I lived to see this day, because all the stuff
I got make fun of for as a kid is now mainstream.
And it's interesting.
I'm seeing the things on my screen
that I've seen in my head for 30 years.
Interesting.
But I just think that, you know, a lot of it
outside of the pop culture stuff, it's just,
it's getting formulaic.
And I love when people can bring fresh voices to the table.
And that's really the purpose
and out of the voices heard compilation.
It's these filmmakers that are here at Dallas Video Fest
that are going to get that opportunity to have their voices heard.
It's a great thing.
And I'm super appreciative.
And I'm really thankful to Bart Weiss for what
I'm taking my time and, you know, there's
even a backstory to that too.

So when I got in, I was like, at first,
I was very skeptical.

And I was like, this is, I didn't even write back,
because I was just like, this is too weird.
And then I wrote back like two days later.
And I wasn't even happy at first.
But then I, it occurred to me.
I was like, oh, this is really cool.
I need to embrace this.
It was just too hard for me to understand.
So that's the back story.
But you're here now.
I'm here and it's been a very nice experience.

are always the same race as the dummy.
And until he said an interracial ventriloquism,
I never thought about it, but you're absolutely right.
And I am so in on this.
That is all it took.
We're going to make a movie of that.
How long is the film right now?
41 minutes.
So it's probably the longest of the voice
of certain compilation films that we've seen
that we've talked with so far.
Yeah, it was actually a horrible mistake
to make a movie of that long and that short.

Is this kind of a deal where you've
made this 41 minute film, but you
want to double its runtime and make it into a feature?
Or have you kind of told the story you want to tell?
I think the writing kind of, we ran out of ideas at that point.

you can, we'll air this and you pick the place it airs.

I'm like, Tim McGrath's character isn't even in the book.

to have the court battles with the, the school, you know, one of the players is ineligible
because of their grades.
So it goes through that, and then after they get to, they win the championship, they beat
Permian.

Well, actually, no, they, Permian wasn't the finals, it was the same as the finals.
Yeah, it was a, yeah, well, the thing is, they beat them, they beat another team.
It was a, I forget, Judson, and they beat them by like 30 something.
Oh, this was my senior year.
This happened.

It follows, it follows that, and then it follows the, afterwards the, the aftermath of what
ends up, and I really, I really don't want, I really don't want to go too deep because

Real here at the Alamo at the Alamo outstanding on a Sunday afternoon
There's a famous shot in the Maltees Falcon which
Over the years has kind of become one of those

He handles while talking to hungry Bogart. Yeah a little too fondly might. Yeah
And so
We got this conversation whether that was intended or not
If you know the film the character that Peter Laurie plays his name Joel Cairo and he's
He's obviously a gay character at a time when they could not come out and say that somebody was gay
But even though
Maltees Falcon was made in 1941 in the middle of the censorship era between the enforcement of the haze code in 1934
I'd say the late 60s when
Tabby's dropped one by one and eventually you know the filmmakers could pretty much do it say what they wanted
Uh
There was a long history of writers and directors slipping in little interesting little metaphors
Visual metaphors in the films that they knew would get past the censors and a lot of them did
So
Having this discussion with these friends of mine and I
We said was that intentional. Yeah, it was intentional
And you know, we started talking about some other examples of this and I said you know
I've always wanted to put a bunch of these together
I just kind of you know people don't realize I think if they think all old movies were very puritan they they're they're a rug
They were slipping all kinds of things in there between the lines
And so the the subtitle of this film could be hidden sexual metaphors in 16 classic Hollywood films that you never noticed before
How long with the documentary?
About 13 and a half minutes. So you got all of that into 13 and a half minutes

No, I have had some other things in the past
I had a similar kind of mashup several years ago called science gone wild which was all about
Strange concepts of science to be found in science fiction films of the 50s and early 60s nice, which I grew up loving
And similar kind of thing that sort of
Like that film this one is is pattern like a like an educational film appreciation class film cool
uh
Like something they would have shown you in a film film app course. Is this something that you want to take to a larger stage?
Are you kind of happy where it is?
Well, I have been by some people who've seen it said you know you could easily expand this
I'm trying not to drop too many double on targets myself here
But it's it's pretty impossible not to uh to stretch this out to an hour
Uh, and it's possible, you know, I've got plenty more than enough material. I'm already thinking of a
Sequel calling son of just a cigar

Of blockbuster co-workers. Yeah, I worked in the first store in the middle in center

I was one of the first employees of the store and then I went to work in the corporate offices or for them 16 years
About half that time in Dallas and half that time in Florida

We still weren't prepared for how funny that thing was we really really enjoyed it
Um, we had a lot of fun making it too because I mean we
You know, I think like we talked about when when I was on last is that you know, we we had a great time
We would watch all this footage and we just laugh and you know if it was
You know if it it made us laugh it had the we almost had to put it in the film, you know, and so
Um, you know, we just had the best time making it and it's it's a
You know, it's full of just crazy characters Michael Hayes who's his warm-up session
It's one of the fun. I think that's when we paused it which park

Doing his runs. I just liked the animated Michael Hayes with the south park mount that made me happy
And that's I mean and everything ended even though we take kind of a light in sort of a lampoon kind of look at it

So essentially my wife. She's pregnant at the time. She calls me. She's freaking out our cat. I've been gone for two weeks
She calls me and she'd been on Facebook. Well, I was at work. You know, obviously, I guess you know these things happen
I'm sure to everybody
And she calls me and she says, you know, uh, I just found our cat and I'm like, oh great. You know, fantastic
She's like, no, no, you get put down tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. Oh
At the animal control center and I was like, fuck him on my home right now. We get there. I print out all these goddamn signs
I print out and can I get a family friendly, but we'll let that one right so
I print out at least a hundred sides. We go to the animal control clinic. I'm banging on all the windows
I'm taking tape and signs all over this entire I mean, dude, I have taped all the way across every gateway everything
I mean nobody is going to walk into this facility without seeing the phone number in my cat
And I go around the back corner and a door so
And I just happened and this is you know, I'm telling you my film, but this is a true story
And so I just walk in and immediately I'm caught off guard and I'm like, well, you know, this is kind of strange
And I keep going in and then and then I'm saying hello. Hello. Hello
I'm thinking there's gonna be like some sort of guard that's gonna taste me at some point
It don't taste me, bro. And literally my wife calls me and I am in the cage room with with all the cats
All like I mean, I'm talking about like rose rose just walking in like you on the place and Mozart music
And because it calms him down right it was a terrible thing for sound for me when I shoot it
But yeah, so
lo and behold
Didn't find the cat we get home the cats back in the bathroom
I've been two weeks later. I'm sitting here like washing my face off and I turn around after going to this place
And my cat's just sitting right by just hanging out. Oh, that's a great time. Good. Good time. And that's fine. So
It tells me to when he tells me to ride something. I'm like, all right. Let's just do this
This is happening and the best part of it was we shot at the actual clinic that I went into you know, so so no hard feelings
Well, I mean
Well, I shot a camp. I didn't honestly tell them that. Sorry, but I shot a campaign video for I'm for like foster like all their fostering programs
Oh, nice. I pitched that coming in to be able to shoot in the clinic and then
Have had full rain
Like why does this look so? Oh, no, no, exactly
It was uh, I mean, I'm not
I'm proud of the film. I think it's fun, but you know, it's not my like direct-toral debut
You know, how to go though. Oh, really good. So and that's a fun
The program in there so far, which you just caught me getting a drink so I'm missing something and I'm sure that's amazing
But there's some really good strong films in there. I've been liking them a lot
I do think they're a little too long some of them, but they have a lot of really great meat to them like the story
Like I said, you tell the story that you want to tell
But I mean, that's the point of shorts is like get it out as much as you can in a short format before you
Make somebody pay eight dollars to get some stick and move stick and move anything you want to shamelessly plug

These are moments that you're just like can I go in it back in the past with my camera phone
Yeah, and the first time I ever saw him is I was living in Austin walking down the street with a buddy of my adonic walk
And there was this guy blazing at a at a bar

So I actually never paid to see Steve Ray Vaughn and I saw him three times. Oh for it to count the T-Birds River Fest
Because I like the fabulous Thunderbirds a lot of them are very underrated just because

I just I've always loved the vibe they threw down. There's actually a picture at a local musicians place. That's

Robert Kray and Clapton all just together in one picture. Yeah. Oh, that was that was the River Fest. Was it that was the uh

Is it Bonnie Ray very underrated as a guitarist? Yeah, and
Robert Kray. I mean, I could go on for hours because I'm a big Robert Kray fan. The Robert Kray amazing
Yeah, but they all played and it was like they were all playing at the end all the four of them came out and played
Played together and Steve Ray came out and played with them all because he was even planned to be there
It was like a surprise that he showed up and played at the very end of the show

Those are kind of surprises. I needed my life. You know what I'm saying. Yeah
It was a great show
So Gary, let's talk a little bit about video Fest 27. I know you're you're here covering some things
Anything that you really stand out that you that that's really staying out that you want to see that this year
Nothing is just jumping out at me right now. I I've you know, I've been so busy
Swamp through everything else that I really haven't had a chance to dig into it
I'm probably gonna catch some of the documentaries because it's the only place you can see the docs
Oh, yeah, one of the things that we talked about when we had the media roundtables a couple weeks ago
Tomorrow night
Metals at the wind spear right of spring. Yeah, we had the director of the
Of that film
Meta right of spring is a ballet
Based on a classical piece of music and we watched we got so they have a trailer for us that they showed us

Not for the kids. Yeah, we'll tell you that
But it looks amazing
And getting hearing this guy talk about the film and his process and what he went through
He is a professor at SMU and it looks really really really really well done
And I was I was fascinated by him. He's actually working on a project right now where they're
They're learning they're trying to teach more about how stretching does and then what it does for people
And he's actually working with the football team
One of the guys that he had working with him working different stretching techniques like took
Three tenths of a second off of his 40 time
Wow, yeah, it's his he I could have listened to that guy talk for hours because he was very he's very engaging and I'm very much looking forward to that

You know if I want him to see a film I can't talk about specific scenes because I want him to I can say how great a movie is and how much I enjoy it
But I don't want to ruin certain scenes for because I want him to see them for himself. Yeah, but we've got another person here

Pretty bad. I loved it. I love it first. I love the second one. The first one was a little slow for me
But the first one was awesome. The second one wasn't really see the differing opinions

That one that I listen to the book of life. No, but like stuff that's already out that you haven't seen yet

So tonight tomorrow and Sunday Monday night. They're going to be at UT Arlington
Which they've done a lot of great work down there just on rebuilding all the buildings and things of that nature
Tuesday and Wednesday will be at the South Dallas Cultural Center
There's going to be a focus on some Native American filmmaking
Nathan building a beautiful building and then next Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday
They'll be wrapping up Dallas video fest 27 at the Angelica Film Center
And at Mockingbird Station if you know where that is locally our other home away from home
If you what you can get passes that get you every film in
The festival, but you've got to go to Dallas you have to go to videofest.org
And you get everything you can see all the trailers for all the movies that are going to be featured a lot of documentaries as Bart said at the beginning of the show

Uh s-o-l salt salt okay, so is it is it the name or is it it's the name?
Okay, go ahead and explain how long is the short first of all seven minutes seven wow
From what I'm reading in this synopsis and you got this into seven minutes. I'm impressed go ahead and talk about it
Yeah, so it's a short documentary about a middle-aged man who goes to visit his father with severe Alzheimer's
And it just sort of follows the course of the visit the middle-aged man is played by my dad
Oh, wow, and the Alzheimer's patients my grandfather wow
So how did when you pitched this how did that go to them? Hey, here's what I want to do and here's how I want you to do it
And so it's a documentary about your family. Yeah wow
Um, so my dad's been really supportive of my foam career for a while and we've tried to make this project
Something about Alzheimer's on two occasions before when was the documentary one was a narrative
I wasn't happy with the documentary and the narrative we never completed
so
During winter of last year, so last January
This January actually
Time blurs after a while
I just remember because it was the in I'm from New York
So the polar vortex was going on during that point. Okay
um
It was just freezing cold outside and we had the film part of the film takes place outside and so like
We took a camera that probably shouldn't have been in
Below 32 degree while they got eight degrees at that time. Oh, just like yeah, we'll go for it
And uh, so yeah, so we shot um in January and uh
It was just it's something that I really wanted to do for a while um, I wanted to capture what Alzheimer's actually was is like I haven't seen a film that's like
You know genuine captures Alzheimer's was the last area types that go along with me
Um, but this is a very it's a very complex
Uh, malady to have because there's so many different ways it can go. Yeah, and
Mainstream media has kind of only treated really one side of it. I totally agree with you on that. Yeah, and um
So that that's basically it and then my grandfather
Does he guys sound probably bad, but don't explain it. Okay, for him
He's like he he was unaware during the filming that we were doing it his eyesight in the films like okay
Completely poor so he can't see what the camera is um he doesn't know, you know who anyone is around him or anything
So it was just a conversation between him and some other person. Okay, and um but
The just you know, we believe both me and my father feel that like if he were like able to actually process what was going on
He'd be in full-on support because like when I was a little kid he was always like go pursue your dreams
That means being a filmmaker go be be a filmmaker
That's wonderful. That's such a that's so great that you've honored your grandfather by doing that absolutely and your father too
That's uh that really touches me
Do you have more footage that you would use to expand it or do you think you have what you need to tell the story that you want to tell
I think I have what I need to tell the story that I want to tell and it's gonna air tomorrow
Uh right here at the Alamo draft house in Richardson at two o'clock as part of the uh documentary shortblock
