Welcome to another iTunes exclusive episode of the Clubhouse Podcast.

Joining me for this particular. I do not know. Our couple of gentlemen, first of all,
he is the official fact checker of this show, and he is a man who maybe has been a little confused
recently during this film. You may know him as fun, Don Go, but his mom and even
Don Ford, I'm going to call him, Don Ford, a welcome sir. Thank you. You know, we've been doing a lot of
these lately. Yeah, but he's doing it for the Empire. That's right. And thanks to our friends at
Allied Integrated Marketing, who let us do. Oh, love us guys. We can't fake them enough. Also joining us
for this iTunes exclusive is a man who may have won an SP, but we're not sure. We're having to
check the paperwork on that. He is the king of bowling. He is Andrew Beckham. Welcome, sir. Thank you.
I got about two more weeks. I'll let you know if I get a SP or not. That is so inside. Yes. I love
inside Joe's. But today we're going to be reviewing a movie called The Rover. It is an Australian
film starring Guy Pierce and Robert Pattinson. Basically, this has taken place 10 years after the
collapse of society, basically. I guess you could call it Mad Max without all the creepy costumes
is what's going on here. And everything's not destroyed. Guy Pierce plays Eric, a man who we meet
and very beginning of the film just kind of sit in his car, chillin. He goes into a store and finds
out that his car gets stolen. And he's not very happy about it. After three guys with guns and
it's truck that they may or may not have stolen before that come rolling literally past the window.
They take his car and take off. He recovers their truck, wants his car back. When some unfortunate
confrontation happens, he winds up crossing paths with the brother of one of the gentleman who stole
his car and they go off on the adventure to find his car. And the brother they left for dead.
Right. Yeah. He always left for dead. Played by Robert Pattinson playing Ray. This will be
directed by David Mishod. Let's see what we would know him from. He's sure. Oh, that's an excellent
film. Animal Kingdom also. He's also a writer. Let's start with the look of the film. Of course,
all filmed in Australia because it was funded by the Australian government. I thought the director
made very, very good use of his space. Yes. Like he really featured the landscape in the film,
which I thought was very well done, Andrew. I completely agree with that. And I think if he
wouldn't have done that, the movie would have just been god awful. That really brought the film
together. Like there was it was just land. Like that's all there was. It really told the story.
Done. I'm like tell, this is 10 years after that. I cannot be collapsed, but
everything is run down. And you see no nice new houses or anything like this. This is,
I think true to form for the situation of what he had on, in like you said also with the land
and everything in the Berlin landscape and everything. My only cork is if everything went to heck,
the roads would not be that well maintained though. That'd be my only thing. I think if it were me,
that's kind of splitting hairs at that point. But how travel would the roads be if everything's
that bad? Exactly. And they mentioned that too a little bit. For me, again, I thought visually it
was very well shot. You never felt like you were getting bleached out because it's a lot of
it's out in the daytime. And he could have easily overexposed it or really kind of bleached it real
bad. But I thought that the director did a very good job visually with the film. The storyline,
this is one of those films. Don't get up and go to the bathroom. I will say it's gritty though.
It's an hour 42. So if you get the large soda, make sure that you have a bladder
the size of an oil drum. Because again, if you go to the restroom, you will miss things. This is
one of those films. You won't be lost, but you won't know as much. Because there's a couple of
key moments in the film that number one are not telegraphed. Number two, if you miss them, you kind of
miss the point of the film. Because you get to the end and you go, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, this is
one. Yeah, this is the resolution. Oh, okay. Yeah, I don't know. No wonder why they did that.
If I'm going to have a, if I have to bring an issue to the story, I kind of felt like
the timeline got kind of weird at one point. Like I didn't know where we were. Like it's
told linearly, but it's told at such different places, where it's like we jump from one day to the
now it's three days. Or, you know, that kind of got a, I was kind of like, okay,
can maybe we have short up the timelines so you didn't have to do this? There's a couple of,
holy crap, moments in the film. Yeah, but it's kind of indicative of what that society would have
been like for those moments. Yeah. Let's get to the, to the reason we're talking is the acting in this
film. Guy Pierce, you know what you get with him. If you've seen LA confidential, you know what you get.
And remember, this guy was in percent what Queen of the Desert is a drag queen and did a great job
in that. I'm a big guy Pierce fan. I, this guy's in it and it's available to me. I'm going to watch
it because if you know me, you know that LA confidential has a very special place in my heart.
LA confidential is the reason I call the boat movie, the boat movie. Stupid, stupid, stupid,
stupid, because it's stupid boat movie because it beat LA confidential best picture that year
and it shouldn't have. LA confidential is one of the greatest films I've ever seen. I still can't
watch all the way through that boat movie. Stupid boat movie. That was, but that was also the only
year that I saw all five best picture nominees in a theater. Wow. That was, that was my claim
to fame that year. And you picked the wrong one to win. No, I wanted LA confidential to win. That was
my favorite film in the year. I mean, it was, we're kind of sidetracking here, but to me that is one
of the greatest films I've ever seen. I liked it so much. I had to go back and see the theatrically
a second time because the first time I saw the performances blew me away so much. I had to go back
to talk and watch the movie itself. So Guy Pierce, huge fan. Now, I saw Pattinson's name on this thing.
And I went, because it's like, you did, you did this stupid sparkly vampire movies.
Stupid dip. But let me tell you something. Let me tell you something. Congratulations, Robert Pattinson.
He got some street cred on this. I didn't forgive you because he was so good. Because you know
he's British and he's playing a guy from somewhere in the south of America. They never quite tell
you where it is. But there were moments in this film that I forgot that I was watching Robert Pattinson.
Like, that's how good the performance was. Like, he became Ray. Like, he was that there were moments
in the film that I couldn't help but think that maybe that part had been written for Justin Timberlake
and he didn't take it. Because I think he was kind of channeling that Timberlake because he
had the buzz cutting every time. Wow, never thought about that. Yeah. But I didn't have a problem
with it. He was, he destroyed this role. Just absolutely killed it. And I mean that in a good way.
Like, I mean, he crushed this thing as much as I love Guy Pierce. Yeah. He got overshadowed in this film
by Robert Pattinson. And if I'm saying that you may want to get your belongings together because
Jesus is coming. Yes. Done. I will say there are a lot of things I don't like about this film.
And like I said, Doyle, Doyle, stupid vampire movie. But like you said, I agree.
He hit it out of the park. He played that part of the mentally slow person. And he played
he was so unpredictable in the film. And he destroyed it. Yeah. Even the character was so unpredictable.
He didn't see a lot of stuff coming that he did. And he, you got to really feel for this guy.
At the beginning, you're like, take him in, hold him hostage. You know, get what you need.
But then for why you know, you start to care for this guy big time. And I really did.
And you spend a lot of time in this film going. And the relationship that he did is he
going to turn on him. Yeah. Because you spend, you know, I, what are the ways I thought of the
film? And this is going to sound really weird. But of Wallabies and men, you know, because he had that,
like, there was a weird loyalty there. That one. Yeah. Number one was they were earned. Number two.
Was not deserved. But both of these two men, regardless of their motivation,
form a loyalty to each other. Yes. And he was a hostage taker. Yeah.
Pierce, you know, here's the object. It comes to him. You know, I mean, you know, he,
except for breaking down part one, I forgive him for everything on this. Because he was that great.
I can't do performances. Oh. And you kind of mentioned this earlier about the hair,
haircut, the, and the facial hair that Pattinson had to. I think that really helped.
I think they'll show you in government where's like, we really need to take away every,
we don't want them to know that this is Pattinson in the film. So, and dog on if they didn't succeed.
Oh, yeah. I mean, how do the ballpark, I mean, it's like a six hundred feet in one of the
moments in the film that Pattinson just went away. Yeah. Like, like, Guy Pierce is always going to be
Guy Pierce to me. And that's not a bad thing. No. It's just he's just greatness. Pattinson,
Giovanni, it's like a Giovanni. Yeah. He took it through the next level. You're absolutely right about
Giovanni. But Pattinson, my god, man. I think they almost formed an unspoken bond up until,
I guess, three quarters away through the movie when Pattinson's character actually said something about,
you know, about his brother. And yeah, it's going towards that. But I think at the very beginning,
Ray was like, you know what, I'm going to stick with this guy, even though he's being this way through
me because we have it. We both have a common goal. We both want to start Guy who started out with nothing
but rage. Yeah. But he was fighting. It was like, you were watching him fight between his rage and his
compassion for this guy. Because, you know, your brother left you for dead. You were shot. You know,
and so you see a little bit of compassion there. But it's, it's the rage that fuels him. He wants his
car back. And I'm not going to tell you why. You need to see the film. Yeah. Do you think after the
hotel, the hotel scene, that's whenever Ray's character, that's what they bonded. That scene
ripped me the pieces. Yeah. Like, I came in to describe it or the PlayStation, too. That really
all. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's just like, there's those moments in the film where you just,
your brain almost melts because you're just like, what's going on here? Yeah. This is a dark,
pretty film. But they're not in a bad way. Like, you're looking at this going there. This is melting my
brain in a good way. Like, this is really holding my, it's a dark, pretty film, but even has some
comedy in there. Like, at the store with the money issue. And he pulled me like, huh, I've got, you know,
yeah, it made you laugh. But I will say there. Well, and one of the writers on this film, and I'm
looking at this now, Joel Edgerton, who played Tom Hardy's brother in Warrior. Wow. Was one of the
writers on this film. Wow. Who I'm a big fan of as well. I will say this on, I do have a lot of
downside on this. I mean, the acting was incredible. I thought, giving you a downside. I looked at the
trailer and it was a lot different than I thought, but I saw from the trailer. The trailer tells you
nothing, but the trailer from what I kind of got. But it kind of, I thought in some points, the
story went in a rear direction, and some points even leg for me. You know, I hate to say it. I thought
it kind of drawn it. It's easy to drag in a couple of different. And that's what really got to me. This
was one of what I was expecting at all in this film. Well, you were so star from information from the
very beginning that when you finally got them, some information you're thinking, I have to know more
now. Yeah. And they showed it to you in. Gritty. It's definitely gritty. This is not for, there's
some, there's a few scenes in this film that are not for the week of heart. That's for sure.
Let's just go ahead and go to the final analysis. The way we do a final analysis on this show is
we don't give you rankings. We don't give you stars. We don't give you thumbs up thumbs down because
our audience are empire better than that. It's a two-prong question. Question one,
is would you see this film again? If the answer is no, then we're done here. If the answer is yes,
then it becomes how would you see this film again? Would you pay full price? Twilight, daytime,
morning, second run. Would you wait for it on DVD or blue ray? I'm not going to say anything beyond
basic cable because this will be on IFC at best. It is an independent film. I'm sure it gets a wide
release in Australia because that's where it's from. It might get show time. You know what, I would give you
that. Angela, start with you. Would you see this film again? I guess I'll give an explanation and
in with my answer. Okay, sure. From the previews that I saw in the actual movie, it was completely
opposite of what I was thinking. I was not excited about going to see this because I didn't think
Pattinson was going to be well and it was actually really good actor. The acting and I guess like
the shooting of the layouts and the scenes how things were set up made the film interesting.
Okay. And no. Okay. Fair enough. Fair enough. Don't let you see this film again.
I would watch it on either on TV, however it is, whether it's IFC or show time or something.
Just to go back knowing the end and kind of really dance why, that's why. And that would
probably be the only reason and possibly because of the acting. My recommendation to the
Empire at best, I would say DVD rental. I would agree with that. I would see it again, but
I don't know that I would rent it. I think I would, if it was on TV and I was flicking through
and there was nothing else on, I might watch it. If for no other reason, I would call people in the
room and go, tell me that's the kid from Twilight. Like, if you're going to see this film,
if you need a motivation to see this film, it is the performance of Robert Pattinson. I am telling you,
I'll like everything else I've forgiven. I've forgiven.
Except for breaking up part one. Well, I didn't, I only watched the first one. And
even my wife was like this kind of sucks. Yeah. And there was no pun intended there. But if you,
if you really want to see a clinic in acting, Robert Pattinson and Guy Pierce, both of them in this
film, the relationship between them, but mainly, I would not be shocked. Now, I'm not talking
Oscar because this film is what it is. But I wouldn't be shocked to see an independent spirit
award come out of this. There's going to be awards that come out of this, especially for Pattinson,
because his performance was so just gut wrenchingly good. But it's not for the kids. It's definitely
not for the kids. There's some deficit graphics scenes in this, and there's of course the
language and all that good stuff. But check it out. You know, if there's nothing else going on,
check it out. I'm not saying it's a bad film. It's just not, I wouldn't pay for price to see it.
I wouldn't pay zero to see it. But again, Pattinson, Guy Pierce, crushed it. Yeah, I did. I mean,
anybody else probably, I would have ranked this movie lower, but those two, with that script and
those roles, unbelievable. Let's do a little thing we like to call the blogs.
