Well, as Don said,
we're going to talk about the Hunger Games catching fire.
For those for the 12 people that probably aren't going to see it this weekend
by the box office numbers,
this is the continuation of three of the most beloved books
by young adults in our time.
It will be four films, but it's three books.
Katna Severe Dean and Pete.
My luck.
Pick up right or the first one left off.
Directed by Francis Lawrence who did not direct the first one.
But you would know him from I am legend,
Constantine, water for elephants,
and they ton of music videos for people like Brittany Spears,
Janet Jackson,
Green Day, Jennifer Lopez.
The guy's got skins on the wall.
But again, the first one picked a second one picks up with the first one left off.
We've just finished a 74th Hunger Games.
Katna Severe Dean.
Have gone back to district 12 trying to live their life.
But the fact that their alive does not please people like
President Snow played by the great Donald southern wind.
So he hires a new game director played by the great Philipsy Moore Hoffman.
I made a side what they're going to chew to get rid of Katna's
because just her image is starting to cause another uprising in the districts
is we're going to do what's called the quarter quail in the 75th Annual Hunger Games
where we're going to take all the people that are still alive that 100 games
and put them back through it.
It's the Battle of the Network Stars, basically.
Except worse.
Except worse, yeah.
And know how we'd co-sell.
It's not going to about Dan Haggody and Katna because.
I do want to bring up for going further.
We got to think everybody at all.
I'm going to create a monkey man.
Some of our favorite people in the world.
Everybody there.
Who put on a screen.
Unrivaled.
But just about any other screening.
I've ever been to press or not.
Oh.
By a long time.
And you sir and I have done some screenings in our day.
Yeah.
I have never seen anything more involved in detail than what they did for this day.

Let's talk about this movie.
I mean, dying to talk about this movie for five days now.
When you've got a cast.
Jennifer Lawrence, who I have an unhealthy crush on.
Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Josh Hutcherson.
Willow Shields, Donald Suther and Elizabeth Banks.
Let me cry with Stanley Tucci.
The people we've already mentioned.
It's a bang up cast.
I cannot give you a performance in this film that didn't sell me.
I'm sorry to hurt you.
Oh, absolutely.
Any standouts for you?
Well, obviously Jennifer Lawrence.
How are you doing?
Who carries the weight of this film on her shoulders?
Well, she has to.
And does it seemingly without effort at all?
I mean, she, you know, she's the.
She's tortured and almost every aspect of her life.
Her family's constantly being threatened by the.
By the higher authority by the man by the man.
She's having to put on airs.
In a way that really conflicts her because she feels one way for one person.
And she's supposed to make it look like she feels that way for another person that she really doesn't feel that way.
When you're referring to Gail Hawthorne played by Thor's brother, Liam Hemsworth.
Right.
The one who is no longer engaged to the Miley Cyrus and to you, we serve.
We say thank you.
Yes.
Dawn, performances in this film.
I would say to really stand out.
Of course, Jennifer.
Because it shows she really had a group fast.
I mean, the Hunger Games are dumped up on her without any preparation in the first part.
And then she actually wins.
And now she's a celebrity when it comes down to it.
She's going to be like the, you know, the Britney Spears of the world of that land.
And shows how she really took a lot of responsibility at once.
And that's a lot of weight on her shoulders through the whole thing.
Um, whether she likes it or not.
And she's not only dealing with the Hunger Games themselves.
She's also dealing with the ramifications of standing up who she is and standing up and winning it.
Because now through all of the districts, the uprising that created the Hunger Games is starting again.
She's a symbol of the things.
But she likes her not.
You know, how she does these little subtle.
I think, you know,
Well, thumb you back to the, to the, the powers to be.
You don't want to stay that for me.
Hoffman Phillips.
He's always great.
I mean, he, he, he.
I could watch that dude read the phone book.
He's just that good.
And I'm trying to figure out where's he standing place.
That's not, that's not.
That's not, that's not.
I'm just saying, I don't, I don't, I don't want to give it.
I'm, I understand, but let's go through his mind.
And his character, they has to play.
I think he plays that so well.
He really does.
Yeah.
He's just, I love the calm he cares.
That's for me.
Everybody around him's freaking out.
He's like, look, okay, let's just do this.
Yes, exactly.
You know, and he's just good at that understated.
Yeah.
Very calm.
I know things are getting weird.
But rude.
Cool.
And ruthless at the same time.
Everybody chill out.
I got this.
Jewels, what did you feel about the performances in this film?
Oh, I love the performance of this film.
I did.
I enjoyed it better than the first one actually.
Who did it?
Was there anybody that stood out particularly for you?
Jennifer Lawrence, I guess.
I did love Jennifer Lawrence and her character.
As you played Cateness.
I mean, you felt like you believed everything that she did and watched it.
The poet, like what she was doing in fall.
And actually one point it brought me to tears.
Really?
Yeah.
Good day.
Just the, you know, just the fact when she felt
the hurt of everyone else, that she couldn't see everyone.
And she didn't know what was going on.
And everything around though, you know, everyone is, you know,
the words that people were getting hurt because of who she cares for.
And you just felt that they're not enough.
You just say that in a face, the hurt and the anguish and the confusion.
And if you felt that motion come out of her.
And I think you can relate that as well.
And I think that's where just it brought everything out.
Well, I'll tell you who stood out for me.
And it was a character that I wasn't real on board with at first,
but the longer the movie went on, I felt the performance just got better and better.
And that was gentleman loan.
Yes.
Who played Johanna?
You would know her.
She played the young Jodie Foster in contact.
Oh, really?
Early in her career.
She also has, she did, you know, an episode of Touch by an angel.
She was also rocket in sucker punch.
Did she also do freaky Friday with,
No.
Wasn't that not her?
No.
You talked about the one with Jamie Lee Curtis?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Oh, that was Lindsay loan.
Yeah.
You know, I think the fourth kind of look alike.
I'm not willing to make that comparison.
I can kind of see that.
Just a little resemblance.
I guess when Lindsay Lohan was just put out all of the stuff.
But that wasn't sure about the character at first,
but again, the longer the film went the more I bought into the character.
And as the film goes on and as you see events unfold,
I just really kind of dug her performance specifically.
I mean, Jennifer Lawrence you know is going to be good.
Jeffrey Wright, who's all this when I thought he was in this,
I was like in Amanda Plummer.
Who we didn't know was in it, so we were watching it.
Yeah, no kidding.
That was one that I don't remember being announced.
Well, that we probably said it on the show and don't remember.
But we go to the direction of this film.
Francis Lawrence, I felt personally did an amazing job because the thing with this one,
because I really felt the first one was kind of slow.
I'm right there with you.
The action in this one.
Much faster pace.
I mean, it's weird to say, but much higher stakes.
I mean, you're going to die either way.
The Hunger Games, but you feel that given what catness is representing and what the establishment is trying to get rid of the stakes are higher.
Right.
And you've got these people that won the Hunger Games when they were 12 to 18 that are now 40 to 50.
They have to go through this again.
And for him to convey that, all of the emotion involved in all the complexities of the arena itself.
Because the arena itself to me is a character in this.
It really is.
It really is.
Totally.
I thought Lawrence nailed it.
Personally.
Donald will start with you.
Oh, the directing I thought was incredible.
And of course during the red carpet that we were at, watching the streamed in.
Before we saw it, they announced he's going to do the last tube directing.
Correct.
That will be the weekend before Thanksgiving over the next two years, 2014, 2015.
Yeah.
And I thought this movie's two and a half hours roughly give her take.
It did not seem like that.
It really did.
You're absolutely.
And that's a good sign.
If you have a movie that two and a half hours does not seem like two and a half hours,
you're doing something very well.
Absolutely.
The pacing on this film I thought was very, very well done.
The Hunger Games and this one I thought were a lot better than Hunger Games themselves
and the event itself than in the first thing.
Well, because it was such a for it to be called the Hunger Games and the first one.
The Hunger Games were such a small point of it because you had to set everything up.
And in this one, it was like, if you don't know what's going on, go watch the first movie and then
come back as here we go.
And it was pretty much what we did.
And one last thing, I really know it's how a lot of these characters evolve because of the
directing.
Even Nicole Banks, her character.
Elizabeth.
I mean, Elizabeth.
I'm sorry.
That's one of the things I was going to mention.
She really did kind of do her own.
If she didn't, yeah.
There are a lot of these things.
But if he shrink it.
I got a crush on Elizabeth Banks.
Oh, so do I.
Yeah.
Jewels direction of the film.
Look at the film.
Feel the film.
Oh, where do I begin?
I've been off having the direction of the film.
It went very well.
It was like you said it was fast paced.
It went so well.
In fact, it went so well.
I really enjoyed that I did not want to get off my seat to court of the toilet.
That's what it's because Don says this is a long film.
It was a long film.
If you're going to get the large soda, have a very strong bladder.
And we did.
And she doesn't.
Unfortunate.
No.
She didn't leave during.
No, she didn't.
But she was not pregnant.
When could credit one hit the screen.
She was out like a shot.
But.
Small trail was left behind.
Me too.
Until she came to the screeching halt at the line.
Trying to get to the bathroom.
But Chad direction and looking.
Feel the film.
Visually stunning.
I mean, you're you're convinced that these guys could get.
Their head knocked off by a.
By a tree sharpen to a pointy spear in any second.
And I'm sure.
You know, having to go work in Hawaii, just must have sucked for these people.
Well, I mean, considering that the majority of it, they shot before they actually got to the games themselves were shot in like a rural part of Georgia somewhere.
That was North Carolina.
No, he's Georgia.
It's Georgia.
They see the Georgia peach in the.
And actually.
But I was like, wow.
It was the first one.
They filmed a lot of it.
I think so.
Yeah, it was.
I was like, wow.
This is Georgia.
And if you want to really understand what these people went through filming.
One of the facts I looked up.
Is that Jennifer Lauren stayed at whilst filming in the arena.
She hit herself with the bow mid sprint and dove into a pool of jets leading her partially deaf for six days.
God.
So what that tells you anything about the way.
I mean, they didn't really pull a lot of punching.
In this film as far as the stunts go.
Well, it it keeps you.
You know, I hate to use an Oakley shade, but it keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire thing.
But, um, and there's just enough mystery to it.
And I want to say Charlotte, who could not be with us for this.
I tuned exclusive.
Has read all the books.
And so if I'm going to look to somebody for a criticism of the film.
She's going to be the first person I go to.
About 20 minutes in, she was kind of doing that.
Eh, look on her face.
But by the end of it, she was totally sold.
She said, I thought it.
There's a couple of things that they couldn't do just for the PG 13 rating.
Right.
I don't want to go into because there's spoilers involved with that.
But I feel better not having read the books beforehand personally.
Yeah.
Because I really wanted that genuine reaction of holy crap that just happened.
Where even in there were certain scenes where she even knew it was coming.
And she kind of had that holy crap that just happened.
So that spoke volumes to me from a story telling standpoint.
And people said that this kind of fall the books pretty well on this one here.
A lot of people I talked to who read the books.
So Charlotte and the lovely and talented Mrs. Urban have said,
mocking Jay needs to be two films because they're so much in it.
That they tried to do that in one film.
It's just a bad idea.
And Charlotte also said, if they cut the third movie off,
I think they're going to cut it off.
A lot of people are going to be really mad.
But it has to be cut off there to go into the final film.
I just, I could not say how much more I enjoyed this than the first one.
Because you and I, three days before the screening,
hadn't even seen the first one.
Yeah.
But we said, we said, okay, we're going to sit down.
We're going to Netflix this thing tonight on our brand new furniture in the green room.
And we're going to sit through this thing by by heller high water.
And we finished it.
I had this real empty feeling.
It was a struggle.
We were really distracted.
But I was going, I really didn't want to see this one.
Because after I saw the trailer for the first one,
I was like there.
But I saw the trailer for this one.
I was like, you know what?
I kind of need to go back and watch the first one.
Because this one looks pretty awesome.
Right.
And I was not disappointed.
I wonder, because Jules and I were talking about this in the way over here,
that the kind of let down that we felt by watching the first one,
I think it probably helped lower our expectations of this one.
And that's what made this one that much better.
I don't know if it lowered my expectations because I had seen the full trailer.
And I had a good feeling about it.
I was like this, because I remember watching the trailer for the first one.
And I was like, I'm not the target demo for this film.
I don't know if I'm going to enjoy this film.
When I saw the trailer for Catching Fire when they released a full trailer,
I was like, you know what I could do this.
This looks awesome.
Yeah, but trailers can be very deceiving and misleading.
Right.
But still, they're not on better feeling after this trailer than I had
after the Hunger Games trailer.
The Catching Fire trailer, I felt better about.
Right.
Now the Catching Fire trailer before you watch the first film, too.
Correct.
So I already knew because when I finished the Hunger Games,
my feeling after the Hunger Games trailer was kind of justified.
My feeling after seeing the Catching Fire trailer,
and then seeing the film, I'm still justified.
Because I was just, I had that same good feeling after seeing the film
that I did after seeing the trailer.
So it wasn't one of those cases where the best part to the movie
were in the trailer and trust me when I say this.
If you haven't read the books,
it's not, no trust me.
So let's go into the final analysis.
We've covered the look of the film,
we've covered the film, we've covered the performances of the film,
we've covered the direction of the film.
When we rate films on this show,
we don't do stars.
We don't do thumbs up thumbs down
because that's an audio medium if nothing else.
We don't give it a number
because dog gone to the Empire people, you are better than that.
You deserve better than that.
Which is why we do things a little bit differently here on the clubhouse podcast.
It is a two-pronged process.
Question number one,
is would you see this film again?
The answer is no, then we're done.
If the answer is yes,
then the follow-up question is,
were you to watch a repeat viewing of this film?
How would you do it?
Would you pay to see it in the evening?
Would you pay for a twilight film?
Would you pay for it in a matinee?
Would you wait for it on DVD?
Or would you wait for it on cable?

The only way to see it.
It's kind of like gravity.
You have to see gravity in 3D.
You have to see this in IMAX, but it is worth it.

But what kind of a show even IMAX for now?
I'm talking about whole kit and cool.
So you're saying you would leave the studio.
As we're recording this at night time.
Yeah.
You would leave right now and go see this right now.

It's a fair point.
I'll be honest with you.
I've this set the bar for the last two.
Like you cannot believe.
I also, I mean, you tell me how.
And you know, we've been doing these.
I tuned special additions for about three or four months now.
I don't know that I've ever heard Don review a film that way.
That this, that this film sets the bar for the next one.
So for coming from him, that's high praise.
Chad, we moved to you.
Would you see this film again?
Absolutely.
How would you see this film again?
I'd go right now and see it in, in, in, in,
I'd pay full price.
I'd pay for a friend that hadn't seen it to see it full price.
So three for three for this film.

Uh, rotten tomatoes rating is 89%.
Wow.
And the estimated gross this weekend is right now estimated 150 million.

That's amazing.
That's a heck of an opening.
My, how I would see it again.
I'm going to tweak with the three of you have said.
I would pay to see it again in the evening.
But I'm at a one in one A because I would see it in the IMAX.
Oh, I know what caveat you're adding to it.
Something I didn't even think about.
But I would also love to see this in the Dolby Atlas.
Yes.
That movie in 128 tracks of audio.
It's speakers in this ceiling.
Like we we the three of the four of us,
Don couldn't meet up with us that early.
But we wouldn't saw screen are not a screen.
But it's showing of the dark world.
Right before it in the Dolby Atlas.
To see this movie in that environment.
Because you can't see it in 3D.
Was it an atmosphere was it?
And it was an ETF.
That's the Dolby.
Is that the same thing?
Yes, the same thing.
Think it'd be pointless saying, you know,
on the games in 3D.
Yeah.
Oh, they don't offer it.
You can't.
It's not available.
I mean, what would you make 3D?
I don't know.
There's a couple of scenes that I think would have looked kind of neat.
When those arrows were coming out.
The arrows.
There's the fog change.
I wasn't going to say that.
But yes.
Some of the things that happened during the actual 100 games.
I think we would have looked cool in the 3D.
But I'm okay without it.
It's a scramble when the game starts.
I mean, I, but there's, I mean, I'm okay without it.
But I would definitely like to take a screening in the Dolby atmosphere.
Because I think that would be amazing.
I will defer to something that one time guest on here said that Clay said that 3D
has never made the story better.
And I think that would kind of apply in this.
It would just be window dressing.
But it wouldn't bother me.
But it doesn't need it.
It doesn't really.
It doesn't need 3D.
They're enhanced.
It's fine without it.
And Dolby.
Yes, I would totally agree.
Dolby.
Definitely would.
Dolby atmosphere.
Yeah.
So Francis Lawrence congratulations.
Lions gate congratulations on this.
We all love this film.
Go see this film.
Now you may not be able to for a few days until you can find a screening.

But I could not have loved this film enough.
