Here's the basic premise because I don't know how deep I really want to go down the rabbit hole on this
but Michael Fassbender plays the title character of the counselor
and he decides he wants to do some drug trafficking
from Mexico and that's what you need to know. This film also starts
Penelope Cruz as his lady friend Laura her real life husband or boyfriend or baby daddy or
whoever it is, have a year bar damn, Cameron Diaz, Brad Pitt, Rosie Perez and a lot of
moving bladays has a very small role, a lot of great, little John Ligg was on the
other side. Yeah, he's in there. We'll start with, let's start with the with the cast.
Donnerman, I'm going to defer to you. Before we get out, I want to thank you, uh, you know,
everybody at ally. Now I didn't have a great marketing. We love those guys.
Yeah, Ashley, all the things got. Do they realize that their company spells aim?
How I didn't agree to market? That could be good or bad. I think it's good.
Okay, I like her. There's a couple of pretty short-looking logo too, aren't you?
On this movie, I'll go just a little bit depth around the thing. He needs to drug
traffic because he's a little bit short on cash. We think, it's said in a movie a couple of
well, to live a second. Is he short on cash or is he short on cash for the deal?
Because let me say up front, there's a lot of vague in this movie. There's a lot.
And I'll let you up, sir. I'll let you continue. No, I agree with you, 100% of net.
But back to the cast before we get more in depth on everything. Right.
Um, I thought the best winner of the role of the best actor actress in this movie, Cameron Diaz.
I disagree because she can pull. You don't see in too many of these roles or she can
play a ruthless person, which it kind of doesn't. This movie plays Malcina who is the
Lafava of Harvey Airbar Dems character.
Um, named Reiner, not no relation to the local radio personality in Dallas,
where we're there. It's built differently. Um, I have a problem and a struggle with
Cameron Diaz as an antagonist. It's something new. And that's why I kind of liked it.
I have like kind of different roles sometimes. I mean, as I'm looking for some of the trivia on this
film, she was, the Angelina show Lee was originally cast in that role. But it dropped out.
And then went to Cameron Diaz. Um, also, actually, that's the only one they talk about.
I think actually, it might have been a little bit better, but still, I was kind of press with
it with, you know, you think of her Charlie Zangels as the blonde in the movie.
She does comedy very, very well. And I think this is kind of a new role why not do it.
I was kind of, I like the new new book from her. Now, you know, like the lead actor, I think
some of those scenes he overdid it. Michael Fassbender. The great Michael Fassbender.
And a couple of roles. And I was talking about that.
Cheers came too much. But I don't want to give any spoilers, but I think you kind of
overdid it. I thought he kind of overacted a little bit this film. I think he shoots some scenery,
especially towards the end. Yeah. That's my point. Yeah. The standout performance to me was
Bardem. Do you think? I thought Havier Bardem was amazing in this film. I would be surprised if
he did not get a best support. If he did not get a best supporting actor nod for this film.
At least a golden globe, if not an Oscar. His role, because you never quite know
what he does. You think you know, but it's never strictly stated what his character does.
He played it with a subtlety that I thought was great. Cameron Diaz. I'm just having problems
in the role she was in. I mean, I have your day. I think he did great job and stuff. I don't think
they should, I think they should use the more in the movie. He was in their sum, but I think they could
use lies a more. That's my course he's always good, but that's my little thing on it. I think
they should have used lies a more, because I think he could do better and more roles in there and
stuff like that and other all the music. What's the most responsible? The music is its own character on
this show. When he comes to performances, one that I was, that I'm kind of on the on the
fence was his bright pit. Why is that? I don't know how I feel about his performance in this film.
Like I thought he was good, but he wasn't great. I think there was a little bit of cheese to it.
He played a different kind of character again, kind of like Diaz, but he wasn't in that much when
he think about how long the movie is. It's 117 minutes, just under two hours. Now you also don't
quite fully ever know what his role and the thing is. Like I said, there's a lot of vague in this film.
You think you know, and I don't know if this was done on purpose, and it was something that
we were joined by a friend of mine last night who I was talking to today.
This comes from a book, classic McCarthy writes books. This is the same guy that wrote
no country for old men. This is the same guy that wrote the road, all the pretty horses as well.
It's nobody has conversations like that. Like almost every conversation had a monologue in it.
And it's hard to translate from what somebody writes to what somebody sees.
And I think that may have taken away from the performances a little bit because everybody had a monologue
in this section. And I mean everybody. You thought the writing wasn't under par big time.
I mostly the writing was sub par. I will say that it was almost too lit. It's feel I've never read
the book, but I feel that it was too literal of a translation that there there there just there was too
much dialogue. As my friend put it, it's very dense. It is. And not in a dense and that's
stupid way, but dense and it's very packed. In an at the beginning, I thought,
certainly for the first 45 minutes, I thought as a real kind of slow moving movie. A lot of
a lot of imagery, a lot of symbolism that I'm still, I mean, it's now been almost 24 hours since
we saw this film. And I'm still sorting it out. And I can figure it out either.
Like, is it this or that or that or this? It's very, there's a lot of twists and turns.
The way I put it was, actually, I'll say that for later in this iTunes exclusive.
But acting wise, I think the actors did the best they could give in what was in front of them.
I give you that. Now this movie was directed by Ridley Scott, the great Ridley Scott. Now
his name during this whole film was going back and forth in my head constantly. And I'll tell you
why here in just a minute, for those of you that do not know who Ridley Scott is. This is the man who
directed movies like Prometheus. He directed the alien. I'm getting there. He directed the
Russell Crowe version of Robin Hood, directed American gangster. He directed a kingdom of heaven,
black Hawk down, Gladiator, GI, Jane, Black Rain, Blade Runner, legend, alien.
This guy's got credit. Totally, if you know he is, he probably live in the rocker. What?
But some people aren't that entrenched in things of this nature. And one of the things that went
through my head a lot as I was watching this film was Ridley Scott is going to direct something
written by Kormek McCarthy. And it just, it just kept running through my hand and I was like,
let me explain some of you people. If you've watched trailers and you're expecting slam
bang, shoot them up, blow and stuff up. Not a lot of that in this film. It is very
dialogue driven. There are some brittle scenes. Don't take the kids. There's not a lot of
Gore, but there's enough to make you go, ooh, that's unfortunate. I'd say that. But you know,
kid, kid, kid, kid aware, kid aware. Oh, yeah, yeah. How did you feel about Scott's vision?
I'll see this at the beginning. I was so pumped. This was like, I think,
you're a big fan of alien. Oh, yeah, I really Scott, everything he touches almost turns to magic,
almost everything. Huge fan of yes. He's done incredible work. And I'm like, this is probably
going to be one of the big Oscar pushes west thinking before I saw it. There went till the
in the veer. It's that time. You know, it's going to be a big dog for the Oscars. And I was
very interested in seeing it. And I know how Ridley Scott and some of these can make you think
can make you wonder stuff like that. But on this movie here, with the writing, with the writer,
did not mix well. I barely Scott tried doing his vision and makes you want to think, but it got
too confusing. I got very lost sometimes in this movie. Some people will compare this to Pope
fiction. I will say don't because. No, not even close. As we say, this movie's very vague.
And it doesn't tie everything up at a nice little bow at the end. So it all connects.
McCarthy almost makes you make connect the dots yourself. It's, he doesn't write to the lowest
common denominator. And Ridley Scott, I think, struggled with that. I think Ridley, I mean,
visually beautiful film. I mean, it takes, oh, yeah. I mean, it takes place a lot in West Texas and in Mexico.
And so there's a, there's just a lot of, a lot of bright colors, a lot of of, one in the answer,
tones. Yeah. Well, they're very, very little. But still, you got conditions there. Right. I,
I won't say on the other hand, I said it this way, where it's some movies at the end make you think and
make you guess in a very good way like life, a pie. This one makes you think and guess, but not in a good way.
Some movies are keep you wonder in a good way. This one makes you wonder, but not in a good way to
very bad way, I think. And, you know, there was something that was presented to us by a friend of yours,
as we were sitting through the credits that she presented to us that I completely missed, but when she said it,
I was like, oh my god, she's right. Cynthia Jordan. She's, oh yeah. Yeah. And I was just, there's a lot of
layers to this film. This is in a spoon fed. Here's what's going on. And Scott really, you know,
he shot the movie well. I just don't know if this was, I don't know if he was trying to expand
himself as a director, but he did Blade Runner. So I think he him in that writer did not mix.
It's kind of like put in oil and water again. I wouldn't say I wouldn't go that far. It was just,
it was, it was a challenge. Definitely was a challenge for him. I'm still trying to sort this
movie out. And I think that's kind of the aim of it that it's what you see it as is not what I see
it as, which may not be what the listener sees it as. And I think there's a certain brilliance to that.
But what, what I learned from this film, don't deal drugs. Very much so.
Greed is bad. Yes. And people suck. Like that's what you learn from some people suck.
Oh no, people suck. I mean, there, there was not a person in this film that was clean on any
level. Well, maybe one, maybe one. Um, but we saw how, I mean, it didn't work out well for that person.
So I'm, we're trying not to spoil too much for you because this, if you have a desire to see this film,
I want you to understand a couple of things. Understand one that it is not to feel good
movie of the year. Oh, no. Okay. Two, you will be sorting this movie out. It's very disjointed.
You know, you have an appearance by, for me, I don't know where Rosie Perez you needed her in this film.
You didn't. But I can see why she was there. You know, but was she necessary?
You could have referenced that scene as something else. Um, a lot of red herrings in this, a lot.
It definitely will take a turn on you when you think you know where it's going and it goes
a completely different direction. And you get lost. That's my bacon. And yeah, and that's what you're
one of the things you said last time we were at the screening was that you got lost in a couple of
sets. And even after moving, I'm trying to sort everything out. And I'll say this, we were in a
press-only screening. So there were a lot of critics who see a lot of movies and even most of them
are coming out going, huh? Well, I was trying to, I was, you know, exercising my, my press available
ability for each dropping. And I was kind of listening to some of the conversations. And what was
interesting to me is that every little group of people, then we're three or four of them sending
outside the theater. They were all talking about something different. It wasn't all about, it was
at this person's performance or the vision. They all had different conversations about the film,
which I think is probably the aim of it. It's probably the key to it. But if you go,
if you're going to see this film looking for a Ridley Scott film, don't, not at all. Unless you've
just watched Blade Runner and gone, okay, I'm prepared for this. Because Blade Runner is very abstract.
A lot of Blade Runner, depending on which kind of the film you see because there's 90 of them,
there could be what you see is maybe somebody else doesn't. And maybe there's another cut of this
film that'll be released too. It's, I feel like I need to see it again. Now that I've seen it,
and now that I've gone through this thing, I feel like I have to go see it again so I can work
backwards. Well, remember at the, after the movie is going, we're still trying, oh, this happened
because of this and this and that happened because of that and that, and no, that didn't make sense.
That can't work because of what this worked. Well, I was talking to my buddy today and I was like,
what I just realized explained this part to me. And I'll talk about that off here because I don't
like, I was going to go. And he, and he looked at me and he went, you know, I don't know. Like,
there are certain elements of the film that you go, was this more to show me the depth of the
character because it doesn't have anything to do with the plot. But I already know as much about
that character as I need to, it's, again, I feel like I have to watch it again just so,
I can work backwards through it and go, okay, this is, this is why this is, and this is why,
it's, it's, you know, it's kind of like you want to do it like a momentum where you want to go
and work your way back. But I, I can't say I didn't like this film, but I can't say I love this film,
you know what I mean? I, I, I, I, I, I'm, I already have them. I don't like it, I don't like it. What,
let's get into final analysis. Okay. I'm going to defer to you yet again, sir. Are grading system?
Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't do it, despite that. Okay. On this show, we don't,
we don't rate movies and stars or thumbs up or thumbs down or numbers because we feel you deserve
better than that. We do. Because you are the Empire and we love you. Especially if you subscribe
on iTunes because that makes us happy. Now the live show, we appreciate it, but I do think that's
it makes me happy too. We actually rate two questions. Question one, would you see this film again?
Question two, if the answer to question one is yes? At what extent would you see it again? Would
you pay to see it in first run? Would you pay in that net? Would you pay evening? Would you pay
Twilight prices? That's not the vampire movie at the time of day. Would you rent it? Would you
own it on Blu-ray or DVD? Would you rent it on Blu-ray or DVD? Would you wait for it on cable?
Or would you find a copy of it and burn it in FG? So done. I will defer. Would you see this film again?
No. You would not see this film again. And for the people who haven't seen it, my recommendation for them
is cable TV and DVR. Because once you watch it once, you'll have a DVR to go back and watch it again
and try to get everything figured out the second time. If it does the second time, you have to watch
the third time and maybe the fourth time to get everything figured out. So cable TV at the best
but make sure you have a DVR and you have that rewind button ready to go. Well played, sir.
For me, and I said this earlier in this iTunes exclusive, that I want to see it again,
but I think I would rent it. See it with a group of people. And we've said that a lot on a lot of
these iTunes exclusives. But this is really, this is this film is a discussion piece. It truly,
truly is. Because you want to go to like maybe, if you're going to go see it in the theater,
maybe hit a twilight show and then go to dinner afterwards and sit around and go, okay,
what the heck just happened for the last two hours in my life? Because there are so many layers
to this film and again, it's not told linearly. It's not the story starts here and the story ends
here. The story starts here and then it goes over here and then it comes back over here and then
it might take a looped loop and then it might go over here. So don't get the large drink because
you don't go to the bathroom. Oh no, you go to the bathroom, you're screwed. I'm telling you now.
But go with a group of people or watch it in the luxury of your own home when this thing
release is on home video. Don't download legally. Do it legally, people.
And then sit around and talk about it because, and I think that's kind of what they're going
for here and we've said that we've had this kind of a ranking on two or three of these that we've
done. See it with a group of friends and then sit down and talk about what the heck just happened here.
It's very tastefully shot. It looks beautiful. I'll give that a hundred percent. It's just,
it's one of those stories. And I'm not, this isn't a spoiler, but I'm just going to let you know.
You never know the name of fast-benders character. You don't. He's just the counselor.
Never say his name. Even if you look, I'm looking at an IMDB right now. Counselor.
Because his name is irrelevant to what's going on. There is a much bigger picture.
Even though the movie's called the counselor, there is a much bigger picture to this film than him.
So don't check your brain at the door. Bring your brain with you.
I will. I would like to see this again, but I wouldn't pay full price for it.
I would either wait for it on something like red box. Or I don't know if I could wait a year
for it to show up on cable before I'd watch it again. I might rent it and sit down and maybe have
two or three people over in the living room and say, okay guys, we're going to sit down.
We're going to watch this together and then we're going to talk about it afterwards.
I might be able to handle that. Or if it was my DVR's empty.
Oh my, it was on. Yeah. Yeah. There's nothing wrong with that. I can do that. Absolutely.
It's not for everybody.
Oh no. It's like you're saying the critics there. We're all talking about it. But I think most
tip were in the negative mood about it, unfortunately. So I really didn't hear what anybody
had to say about the film itself. But I mean, I'm looking on does not have a rating on rotting
tomatoes as of the taping of this particular project. Well, sometimes it isn't. Sometimes it's not.
It kind of depends. I'll be interested to see. I will say this to the people who are watching.
There are a couple things during the movie that they talk about, that they bring up for some
reasons you're going, why are they talking about that? Yeah. Pay attention because then they make
sense in the end. And then you go and a cup of me. Oh, that's unfortunate. Yeah. Yeah.
Another one of my favorite performances was Ruben Blades. Very small role, but I first
thought I love him. I think he's amazing. But his, his model on kind of ties it all together,
which you really have to pay attention. You really, really do. So we need to talk on that one.
So they're, so that's the final analysis. The counselor. Very mixed. I'd say,
the rest of the line, the things that they're by the ally to get in their buddy else there. They're
they're so great to us. They're truly true. Yeah. And directed by Ridley Scott, written by
Kormick McCarthy, more stars than you can shake a stick at. And don't blink as a couple of them you might
miss. Totally. And that's what I really did like about the film was how they kind of sprinkled
