The clubhouse may not be live on the air, but once in a while we get to do anti-tunes exclusive.
I know for those of you who have subscribed on iTunes, it's been a while since you heard us say that, well, it's been a while since we've had the chance to do it.
My name is Rob and we're going to have two of them coming at you back to back this week, so I hope you've got room in your iPod or listening device ready for them.
Joining me for this particular one is a man who is the official fact checker of the show and he's kind of helping me keep the wheels on this thing as they've contented a fall off lightly as due to outside things going on.
He is fun, don't go, but his mom and name him Don Ford, I'm going to call him Don Ford, welcome sir.
Well, thanks for having me in. This one's going to be a pseudo solo adventure.
Yeah, I wanted to make this except I actually left work early that day and stuff and it wasn't filmed.
It's alright.
The first of all, thanks to our friends at Allied Integrated Marketing for giving us the opportunity to screen movies as we do.
The years back in full swing as we've had a couple of go to this one we're going to talk about is the Roma Downey and her husband.
Completely lost his name, produced son of God.
This is not a facetious title. This is about the life of Jesus.
Runs, it runs pretty long.
I'm going to say that going into this.
But how long was it roughly give or take?
It was about an hour to one, two hours and 20 minutes.
Okay.
Basically, I mean, do we really need to go over the plot here?
Basically, there's this guy named Jesus, right?
Yeah.
Basically, it's taken from the perspective of John.
Okay.
So it's basically from the the Gospel according to John.
It starts with him basically going over the brief going over the New Testament and then we go into the life of Jesus.
Mostly his adult life as he assembles the disciples begins to preach the betrayal, the crucifixion and the resurrection.
And it ends with the beginning of acts where the the disciples get together and get ready to disperse and start to spread the Gospel of Jesus.
This film was directed by Christopher Spencer.
Now he directed some of the episodes of the companion piece that Burnett and Downey did called the Bible,
which I saw, which I thought was very, very good.
That's another discussion for another time.
Of course.
Cars I'm concerned personally.
He does a lot of documentaries.
Looking for anything you might have heard of the human body.
If you remember that in 1998, he was involved in that.
East and West.
Australia beyond the fatal shore.
Seven wonders the industrial world.
Stonehenge decoded.
Things of that nature.
So how would you rate the directing on this thing?
Visually, we'll start there.
Visually, I thought it was beautiful.
It really, I mean, a lot of bright colors when they were supposed to be, you know,
as Jesus has betrayed, of course, that all happens at night.
I thought it was directed very nicely.
If I were to say anything of the other side of the coin and the directing,
I think there were parts of it that may have been a little
too dramatic if that's possible.
But the guy that played Jesus, a Diogo Marado.
I said that right.
I'm sorry, Diogo, Diogo more goto.
Was that the widest print of that?
This is my Alberto Del Rio.
He was also part of the ABC show Revenge.
All right, right now.
Looks like he's got some things in development right now.
Movie called Red Butterfly.
Movie called Born to Race Fast Track.
And at TV, movie called The Messengers.
That would be all you really know him from, I guess,
is from Revenge.
It was one episode in Season 3.
Now let's get to the acting.
Because I don't want to get to the overall yet.
I want to do this for you.
Sure.
Another question there.
You know, I'm a big iron scenery in this short track.
How was the scenery that seemed pretty historically correct according to the platform?
It seemed like that they did a very good job.
The cinematography and set design did costuming did very well.
I didn't feel like I was watching a soundstage at all.
Like I said, visually, great job.
I think it was beautifully shot.
The acting, I guess it was a little over dramatic at times.
The only person that she would know from this is Roma Downey.
Okay.
She's in it.
She plays his mother Mary.
She has to.
Okay.
And you have to be specific because there's about 19 different
Mary's that you've got to talk about.
Yes.
But she plays his mother.
The Virgin Mary.
She really don't see her until the end when the trial and crucifixion happened.
All right.
I went for those of you that know me and for those of you that don't let me clarify.
I fashioned myself to be a man of faith.
You know, I have been a proclaimed Christian since I was 13 years old.
So my theology tends to run very deep.
And I so I don't know on a certain level if I'm the right guy to review this film.
Because I hold a very high standard.
I can see it put the words together.
It's.
If I were to sum this film up in four words,
Jesus 101.
Okay.
The basics not to in depth.
Would you say it it breezes through a lot of things.
All right.
And you don't have two and a half hours.
You know.
But but if you could still tell a lot more story into and a half hours.
I think they spent too much time just like the passion of the Christ.
They said I think they tried to use that model.
But try to expand it a little bit more where has the passion of the Christ starts after he's arrested.
All right.
There was too much time spent on the crucifixion.
All right.
I went to for my plus one for this screening.
I took a very dear friend of mine who is the creative arts pastor at my church.
He and I went together.
And as you can imagine his theology runs pretty deep too.
He's a younger cat.
And I was we were both kind of like.
Every once in a while we'd look each other and go.
Hmm.
Hmm.
I don't know that I would call this the definitive Jesus story.
There's a lot of things about his life that I would have lied to seem portrayed more.
The story of Zacchaeus.
Not in the film.
One of my favorite Jesus stories.
The story of Jesus in the Samaritan woman at the well.
Not in this.
Mary Magdalene took about two minutes.
Oh, that's it.
The leopards or the fiend.
The leopards.
No.
The lame man.
No.
The feeding of the 5,000 is in there.
The rising from the dead.
Oh yeah.
That's the resurrection.
No.
Lazarus.
Yeah.
Lazarus is in there.
Very, very brief.
They don't go a lot into the parables.
The fact his baptism is told in flashback and very briefly.
Now let's get to where my issue comes in.
All right.
Go ahead.
You watched the Bible.
Correct.
Yes.
The five was the five or six parts.
I think it's five.
I got something like that.
Let up the Easter Sunday.
Last year.
Yeah.
2013.
If you've seen the Bible.
You've seen two thirds of this film.
Because it's the exact same footage.
It's not a sub.
It's basically it's a companion piece of the Bible that they want you to
come pay the box office for.
And here's why this concerns me.
There has been a perception of the church as long as time of the time between church
and money.
And in this day and age especially, living in the aftermath of things like Jimmy Swaggered
and Jim Baker that didn't help us.
Exactly.
So I can imagine the perception out there of people saying, wait a minute, this is the
same footage.
And I watched it on cable last year.
Or if I went and bought the blue ray.
Are you a double dip in here a little bit?
And that's where my concern comes in.
I would have rather than have maybe shown this first.
And then done the Bible later.
All right.
I can see your point.
Big time.
Let me try to ask this.
It's not really tough for you to do.
How would you rate the movie?
Because sometimes as, you know, when we start doing reviews and get the critic status,
you know, you have to go in sometimes with an open mind.
Absolutely.
Okay.
How would you rate this movie two ways?
One has robbed the critic.
And has robbed the man of faith.
I know it's a good quote.
It's a good quote.
That may be.
That may be the toughest question you have ever brought to the table on this show.
So congratulations on that.
Yeah.
If not one of the toughest questions anybody's brought to the table on this show.
Uh, that's the first off as a critic.
That's critic.
I thought it was a little overacted.
All right.
Um.
Again, visually loved it.
Beautiful.
Are you asking me as a critic having seen the Bible many series or not?
Just a whole thing overall.
A quick one, two, three points.
As a critic, I was disappointed because of that because it was all of the same footage from the Bible with just a little like now.
They did take the Satan stuff out of it because a lot of people were comparing Satan saying he looked like our president.
So they just went ahead and took all that out.
It's just because they didn't want to go through it.
And I respect that.
Uh, so didn't have the 40 days of temptation.
No.
The 40 days of 40 nights was not in there.
Uh, so then that's Rob as man of faith.
As a man of faith, I think it's a good introductory tool for people that want to learn about the Bible and learn about Jesus.
Uh, it made a lot of money in the opening weekend.
A lot of money.
Which I respect.
You know, I mean, any time that that Christianity can be recognized and not have the word scandal after it, I'm in a good place.
But having seen the Bible, which that's a whole another podcast for a whole another time.
Of course.
Because I believe you, they really could have stretched that out and really take in their time with it and told a lot of some of the stories that were completely brief.
Um, you know, we did another film that we did critics for which for it, which I like, you know, by this for which we thank him for his Mandela.
In my criticism was as how he kind of stopped at one point and it didn't, it briefed through a lot of stuff and all that.
Would you give it the same?
No.
Because Mandela, the book it's based on is a specific time frame.
All right.
Where the Bible pretty much covers life.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So I think there were some things that were briefed through that didn't have to be.
I think that there are some things that were that take more time that didn't have to.
My personal favorite story of Jesus is life is during the resurrection.
When he appeared to Simon Peter.
And for those of you that don't know, Simon Peter, he's my favorite disciple because he was seen as the moron.
And he was the one he was the he was the fisherman.
That's what he had for a living.
And after Jesus died he went back to fishing.
And when Jesus first appeared to him, he was he couldn't catch any fish.
And Jesus just merely said, put your cat, put your cat on the inside of the boat to your nuts.
And he loaded his boat down with fish.
And Jesus said, come and I will make you fishers of men after he dies.
Peter went back to fishing.
And there's a man on the shore.
He says, and they're like, you're having a look. He's like, I asked about day.
Which now they said about.
And there's a piece to that.
And it happens again.
He realizes who it is.
Jumps out of the boat.
Which he could have just robed the boat to shore.
But he's Simon Peter.
So he jumps out of the boat.
And there's a piece that comes after that.
That, to me, is one of the most touching pieces of Jesus's story.
Because Jesus tells Peter the night before the crucifixion.
He says, by the time the cock crowes, which means the rooster crowes, sunrise.
You're going to deny me three times.
And see him, Peter is, you're insane.
And he does.
And the third time he denies him, the rooster crowes.
They changed it.
And the beauty of that moment when he comes back,
he says to Peter three different times, do you love me?
And Peter says, yeah.
And what people, and it's to me that's the most poignant part of the story,
because Peter denies him three times.
But Jesus asks him, do you love me three times,
which then forgives him for the three times he denies him?
And that part hits me clean.
Because I'm like, and it wasn't in the film.
And I was like, are you kidding me?
This is one of the most powerful points of the entire bit.
And you're going to leave it out.
It really frustrated me.
Again, Jesus 101.
If you want an introduction into who Jesus was,
it is life.
This is a great tool for that.
Now they're touring the soundtrack,
which will be here in the Dallas Fort Worth area
in about three weeks.
Actually, right at the street from our studio,
is what's going to take place.
It's a two-hour show with a lot of great Christian contemporary acts,
which are going to incorporate the Bible and Son of God,
but they're calling it the Son of God tour.
I know churches will own this thing,
and they will show it at Nazium.
Because it's not blasphemous,
it's just not complete in my personal opinion.
A question for you.
Sure.
You don't have churches using this instead.
You brought a passion to Christ,
which is very, very, very, very, very brutal.
Is this too brutal for the kids?
No.
Okay.
It's a very light version of it.
Actually, it's not as detail oriented as the passion
of the Christ was.
I only have seen the passion of the Christ once
and I will never watch it again.
I thought it was too much for me.
I know what happened to him.
I know how that worked.
You know, I don't have to know again.
Yeah.
So, I wish that it's not too bright.
No, no, no, no.
There's a fair amount of graphic to it,
but not nearly as correct.
That's why this was PG13.
If I had the choice between watching the passion
and you're watching this again, I would watch this again.
All right.
Because this is more of a complete story of his life,
or that just dealt with from the last supper
through the Easter Sunday,
and it made it a billion dollars.
So, final analysis for this film.
We don't just give you stars or rankings
or whatnot, because our empire is better than that.
Our final analysis comes in a two-fold question.
Question number one,
what do you see this again?
And question two, if you would,
how would you see it again?
Would you pay for it in an evening show?
Would you pay at a matinee show?
Would you wait for it on cable?
Would you get it on Netflix?
Would you buy the DVD or the boy right?
So, question, would you see this movie again?
I would watch it again.
No, notice I would watch it again.
I wouldn't go out of my way to see it,
but I would watch it again.
Okay, and what form would you see that in?
I'll put it to you this way.
The Bible was a year ago, right?
I don't own the Bible.
If it were on cable,
and I was cooking around, and I was in the mood,
I would watch it.
And how would you recommend it to our audience then?
It depends on your situation.
If you're with the family, and you want a good family film,
that's got good values, faith-based, of course.
Go check it out.
Matinee, afternoon, and matinee at best.
Okay.
I would say maybe way to the blue ray comes out,
and have a family event together at the house.
All right?
And for everybody else, it may not be a extreme faith.
If you're curious as to what who Christ was,
go check it out.
Now, there's also another little movie called The Greatest Story Ever Told,
which will be airing on your local,
probably ABC affiliate here very, very soon.
But yeah, that's where I would go with it.
I'm not saying it's a bad film, I'm just saying it's an echo.
If I had to give it a grade, I would give it an eye
because it's incomplete.
Okay.
