And hello to everybody out there who's listening to this iTunes exclusive.
That is true.
We do this because we care.
Today, a case you haven't figured it out by the great soundtrack.
Supply by our friends from not only our friends, but the guys from Apaca, Lyptica.
We're going to be talking today about an experience we had last week that we couldn't talk about till now.
When we saw the IMAX 3D presentation of Metallica through the never.
For those of you that aren't aware, this is a hybrid film slash concert film.
It takes place as Metallica does a one night only concert.
This was filmed in Toronto as somebody in the front row who had their big Canadian flag,
one of their reminders to the whole thing.
And during the performance, a young roadie by the name of Dane Dahan who plays a
character named Tripp is not on a very special mission.
They have a semi that has run out of gas in the middle of the city.
And he has to go bring gas to the guy because there's an item in the truck that is very, very important to the band.
And does not quite go very smoothly.
But also this is a concert film.
So if you are somebody who enjoys live music, there's a Metallica concert in there for you too.
This thing runs about an hour and a half.
We saw it in the IMAX 3D because the first week of release, this is an IMAX 3D only.
And the only way to see it is that way.
Well, we're going to get to that here in just a minute.
Let's not, let's kind of, let's not bury the lead a little bit.
But let's talk about this film itself first.
Again, filmed in Toronto, actually filmed over three nights.
If I'm not mistaken, it's a, it's about what you would expect.
Why did you see it?
Not much trivia to see on IMDB.
This was directed by Nimrod on a, on a tall.
Who's name you not know from films like a vacancy?
Do you remember that thriller?
Oh, yeah.
And he also directed predators.
The Robert Rodriguez produced reboot of predator.
He also directed armored.
Never saw that one.
That's the Matt Dylan and a whole bunch of guys robbing an armored vehicle.
Oh, I did see that.
He directed that as well.
We got about.
So there is that.
Now, dang the Han you might know, I'm coming.
He'll be Harry Osborne an amazing spider-man too, but mostly you might know him from Chronicle.
And where he played the role of Andrew Dettmer, who was the kid that kind of wicked out.
So the whole thing I'm watching, I'm like, I know this kid from somewhere.
Yeah.
It starts out as he's coming back from another errand.
He's run.
Well, they have one little thing at the beginning, which was funny.
Yes.
Well, but that's what leads into him because he comes past that guy.
Yeah.
And gets into the arena to finish his last errand.
And you see the guys from the band as he walks past them backstage.
And the concert begins where he's there.
He's actually at the concert watching the concert.
He's pulled away from the concert to run this very special errand for the band.
So let's start with the movie itself.
What did you think, sir?
At the end of it, I had a couple of mixed reviews.
This was really hard to describe.
As a concert film, incredible.
A great.
A great.
Singing it in 3D IMAX.
You felt like you were there.
And the experience of singing, especially in the first couple of weeks, which I highly recommend,
it's going to be a full theater.
Which kind of is a good atmosphere.
Yeah.
It's almost like a concert atmosphere.
Yeah.
There was, I remember this one girl in front of me, who was just banging her head.
It's like a certain head getting a fall off before the sick ends.
Yeah.
Metallica!
Through the whole thing.
And I never had a film before in a regular theater where your chair starts to shake.
And the whole row starts to shake.
Well, but that's also part of because people were head banging and jumping and everything like that.
My seat started to shake a few times.
Which I thought was kind of cool.
Well, that's part of the IMAX experience.
Yeah.
Because you get that much richer sound.
Yeah.
You get a sharper, bigger picture quality.
Yeah.
The 3D to me just added to it.
You felt like you were there.
Agreed.
Agreed.
And my concern going in was, is the story line quote on quotes.
Going to interfere with the concert part of it.
Was it going to be a 50 50 thing?
Was it going to be more movie?
Was it going to be more concert?
And really to me, the plot was kind of secondary to me.
Like I didn't feel like I need more Metallica.
I need more Metallica.
Like it was perfect on that mix.
I thought they did a good mix.
We're going to give you a little bit of what's going on the story.
But the music is what's driving the story.
And the visual part of the music that they're playing is part of the story, too.
And the thing I like about that storyline is because he can only have so many shots of the drummer.
Large audience.
Large audience.
Yeah.
Or Kirk Hammett or James or Robert.
The whole thing is, if you do a concert film, it's just a concert.
Are you going to see as the stage over and over and over from the same angles over and over?
Well, it kind of give you a break from that.
And if I kind of disagree with you on that front because number one, they did this in the round.
Which, which always is a challenge for both the band and a crew of your filming.
But I thought that there was never a time as I was like, okay, less headfield, less headfield.
Yeah, I thought it was very well shot from a standpoint of, you know, how many movies you see where the bass player gives a lot of face time.
And true heo, who I honestly believe one of these days, we're going to see a headline on Yahoo, that says true heo can no longer tattooer because he's broken his back and half the way he plays the bass with the bass guitar.
It's around his ankles.
Yeah.
But he's great bass player.
Don't get me wrong.
Yeah.
But I just don't see how that's comfortable.
But he gets just as much face time as the other three.
But my point is, on a concert film, it's just the concert and after a while, you only have so many angles.
But for me, I would say with that though.
But I like how he had the mix with the storyline.
It was back and forth, back and forth.
And a lot of the songs were like you're saying, played over during the storyline.
Which actually is going to come into play a little bit later in this episode as well.
If I may be quick, what do you think is you, you said you're filming this up front.
My film is up front where I was kind of scared because...
Well, and let's go ahead and get into that because...
I was worried that it's going to be another concert film that they're doing just because everybody else is doing in this might be trash.
Let me just say also as I'm looking through the information brought to us by our friends from IMDB.
This movie was recorded in Dolby Atmos.
Of course.
You can tell.
No, we couldn't because we were in the 3D.
We weren't in the Dolby.
But should our local theater, our friends over at the AMC North Park, should they put this?
And in Dolby Atmos, I might have to go back for that.
128 tracks of audio.
Yeah.
I might have to go back to see it in the Dolby Atmos.
Right now it is an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
And 7.2 on IMDB.
In a front to me, it was listening.
If you want to add us, you're supposed to jump in.
But I think that the audio was amazing.
The way it was recorded was just... it was gorgeous on every front.
Again, the story didn't take away from the music, but let's talk about the music for just a minute.
We're going to establish right now the level of fandom between us.
I would consider myself a casual metallic fan.
For me, they kind of dropped off with me after the black album.
Some of it I've liked.
But overall, nothing has been...
How do you say...
Nothing to me has been complete.
If that makes any sense.
Totally.
But you are a bit more of a hardcore fan than I am.
I've seen them five times.
First time was in high school, in of all places, Billings Montana.
They played there because they wanted to play it off 50 states.
That's right.
And the crowd was not that big compared to the next album that came out the black album.
They came back and the place was almost packed to the realms of the Metro Arena in Montana.
So between the Justice and the Black, the fandom based went through the roof.
But during that time, I loved all their albums through the Black.
I think rental lightings are best album without a doubt.
Master is their second album in my opinion.
Everything after the Black album, after a load, I started kind of...
This is not...
They're changing their two pop-ish now.
I don't know if I consider it a pop-ish, but just for mainstream.
Mainstream is probably a better word.
Mainstream is probably a better word.
In more tamed.
They're old stuff.
I'm die-hard to the end.
Any e-play, right?
You play right a lightning.
I could go to the whole album.
Which they did.
They're 16 songs on the soundtrack.
It's a two-disk set.
And to me, and you and I kind of disagree here,
but to me, it was a good...
A good smattering of everything.
Because when you're a band like Metallica,
you're never gonna make a set list.
It's gonna make everybody happy.
Because the catalog is so deep.
You're never...
I mean, you do...
There's everything on here from creeping death
to fuel, to master of puppets, to enter sandman,
to Orion, to hit the lights.
I mean, I think they really covered their career well.
My gripe on that.
Of course, they played stuff off riding all that.
The whole rate.
Like I agree with you on that.
But the point I counterpoint on is...
There are certain...
There were two songs for sure that they did not put in this movie,
which they should have.
One is...
And anybody in the Metallica fan will know this is...
To fade to black.
Well, even though I'm a Metallica fan, it's probably no fade to black.
Wait to black.
And there would have been a perfect...
Right?
They could do it to a certain part of the film.
They don't want to ruin it.
Right?
I'm going to say Radford, they've played master puppets
would have been a perfect point to play that...
They'd be black.
I'm going to say the master of puppets,
section was probably the best.
Probably the best.
The best.
But they run the hits.
And I'm not going to run all the tracks for you.
Because if you haven't seen the movie,
and you don't want to be spoiled,
I'm not going to run the track listing for you.
But to me, it's a very, very good.
I'm using 16 tracks to discs.
I mean, your average run time
is like five to six minutes.
So you're going to have to take two discs for it.
My other graph on the music, though,
was when they played battery,
and they played where, wherever I my room,
they cut them.
But on the soundtrack, they're in their entirety.
I know, but in the movie.
Which is kind of weird for me.
Because wherever I remember,
I agree with you.
You only got a little bit of it.
But again, we don't want to go too much into it
because we want people to go into it fresh.
I would have liked a little bit more of where,
at least wherever I may will, at least that one.
Because I love that song.
But then again, you and I also differ on probably one of my favorite
Metallica songs that you are not a fan of,
being nothing else.
But see, not everybody has to be like,
all the time.
Sometimes you have to step back and slow it down.
It's a big difference.
But think about your cover of turn the page.
Understand?
Their cover of Tuesday's gone,
which I think it's an old student song,
which I think is amazing.
I've never heard Metallica's version of Tuesday's gone
by Leonard Skinner.
Look it up.
It is very, very good.
I very much enjoy that.
It is on.
But I know that you even look at it.
It's on Garage Ink Disc One.
Now, even on right away,
they may have to black,
which is not a bummer.
Well, there is parts,
but still kind of that slower kind of song.
You know, with the build, you know.
I'm kind of hoping that we get a blue ray of this
that maybe has an extended cut.
Maybe.
Or maybe you can separate the story from the council,
and watch them independently,
or watch them together, or watch an extended version.
Because it's hard for me to be that Metallica's only going to play 90 minutes.
Like, ever.
You know, there's got to be,
I want to see some of the cut footage.
Some of the footage they were like,
we had to,
because they could have done two hours,
and I'd have been fine.
And it was only 90,
some minutes,
90,
two, I think.
They could have added,
seeking to.
94 minutes.
They could have added,

to the let's start the game,

let's figure out what capitalism's going to do.
The action was pretty high,
Everybody I've talked to has been like, yes.
This was good.
Of course, the atmosphere helped being surrounded by Metallica fans, and not just like, you
know, stuffy people that were there to review a movie.
But being amongst Metallica fans, and even in the press section, and Kudos to Metallica
for promoting this film properly, you know, the four of them were in different areas of
the country, both Friday, the opening night, which was last night from when we were recording
this, tonight and tomorrow night, just going to random screenings that were going to
not random.
They're scheduled.
But they're going to introduce the movie and really get out there to promote it.
And a band like them doesn't have to do that, which to me is the brilliant of it.
Totally agree.
I, I, it wasn't the perfect film, but I'll say this.
It was probably the best concert film I've ever seen without a doubt.
It puts that one direction, Hannah Montana puts all of that to shame.
This is how you do concert films.
Sir.
Sir.
It puts every you just put one direction, and Miley Cyrus, in the same sentence as Metallica.
Are you, are you insane?
Do I need to have you drunk tested?
I, they didn't write as what I'm going to tell you.
I have told me now, friend of the show, barbed wire, he's going to be going to be
going to be seeing this the day after we record this.
He's going to be on the show to talk about it.
I would pay full price again at an evening show to see this in, don't see it.
If you're not going to see it, I'm X 3D.
I'm X 3D is really the only way to see this.
Read 100% and I would also be at that point where if you're a Metallica fan or like
that kind of genre, pure 100% see it full price, Matt, and a 3D agree with you.
You're saying Matt, I'm saying, I mean, I'm saying full price, I want to say full price
from an evening show.
If you're not going to see it, I'm X 3D by the blue ray.
By the blue ray, when it comes out, they have not put a release date on it yet.
I'm very intrigued to see what the extra is on this blue ray or going to be because
there's got to be so much that they're going to give you in it.
One thing I want to read, the storyline.
Love it.
You're going, okay, all of a sudden, the storyline, you think it's, now be careful
though, because I know where you're majoring right with the storyline as I don't want
you to talk about that on this show because we want people to see it.
I'm not going to say that.
Okay, it starts off, it's just like, okay, this is every day.
This kid is leaving their arena, then all of a sudden, the storyline just turns to,
what the heck is going on?
I think you can say that because they show that the trailer.
But I love it.
I'm just talking about one issue with it.
I don't want you to talk about because it's potentially a spoiler.
I'm not going to give a spoiler.
I'm saying there's one thing of a storyline.
I hate.
I'm going to leave it at that.
And if you want to ask Don, when you see him, you can he'll tell you one on one.

For you, it's ever for me, I'd have to, I think I'd have to check the paperwork.
Because I can't say off the top of my head.
Now, what I say, the favorite concert film I've probably seen in the last five, six, seven
years.

My personal.
I can't think of one.
I don't, I don't want to put it out there because I'd have to do the research before
I'm willing to say that.
But this will great job by everybody involved.
