You've also noticed that we did not play the original 7th Trendon.
This is a special edition and it's a special edition for the reason you hear the music
in the background because you're not going to hear it in the theater right now, unless
you're in a retro thing somewhere.
We are here to talk about one thing and one thing only.
I've never seen you this fire.
Approximately four and a half hours ago, Chad and I were at a local cinemaplex.
And by the way, kids, this show tonight is completely free form.
We have no run sheet and we're going to go till we're done talking about this.
Or I follow a sleep which ever comes first.
We just saw a man of steel, went and had a little dinner afterwards to kind of take it
in a little bit.
And as we left the theater, I said to Chad, we have to go do a special edition tonight
while it's still fresh in our minds and we can talk freely about it.
That being said, the podcast you are about to hear is going to be intensely spoiler-rific.
So if you have not seen man of steel, I warn you now, if you don't want spoilers, stop
the podcast, come back to it after you've seen the film.
I'm going to give you a couple seconds, three, two, don't say the one, okay.
If you're still listening, you'd either seen the film and are ready to hear us talk about
it or you haven't seen the film, don't care about spoilers and are ready to hear us talk
about it.

First of all, let's talk about the presentation itself.
Two weeks ago on this show, P-O-I was Dolby Atmos, right?
I was very shall we say underwhelmed as was I with Dolby Atmos.
We saw a star trek into darkness.
You convinced me that we needed to go see this film in the Dolby Atmos and if it's still
sucked, we wouldn't do it again, right?
Much better presentation, okay.
And I say that with the caveat of Dolby needs to be more selective on the types of films
that they put in there.
Now, I will say this, the next film we see in Dolby Atmos will be Pacific Rim.
Good, really, okay.
Because any of the other films are probably going to put in it between now and then I don't
care for it to, don't be atmos to me is in a concept.
Pacific Rim, I'm going to bring an extra pair of shorts because that's the only way
we're going to get through that in one sitting because I think the sound feels for
that's going to be absolutely insane.
Yeah.
You said they're skipping it for the lone ranger, right?
I don't remember what the schedule is, I don't think it.
See, my key topic would be good to do Dolby Atmos for a long range.
This movie here, but this movie here was a textbook definition of why they created Dolby
Atmos.
My god, the movie is a solid two and a half hours, so prepare yourself for that before
you go in.
Oh God, I love the score.
You're hearing currently hearing the score by Hans Zimmer, I want to get to that in a minute.
I want to talk about the film itself first.
This is a reboot.
We are ignoring everything that's come before including the Bryan Singer debacle.
In most people's minds, especially the Bryan Singer debacle.
I think this thing exists.
It looks like it's going to take, it took in 44.1 million on Friday, 12 million at the Midnight
Screenings on Thursday, right?
Well, we'll probably have to look at the numbers, and we'll mention them tomorrow night
from Fox and Hound, because I really want to see what this thing wants up with.
Is it Caval or Covell?
I thought it was Caval, okay, you've watched the tutors, I haven't.
You put that in, I've never mentioned his name.
Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Kevin Costner,
Richard Schiff, Chris Maloney, Larry Fishbone.
My first concern was that there was too much star power.
Not a problem.
No.
It is a, even though it's a Superman film, it really does on a certain level have the
feel of it ensemble piece.
I mean, same as the Donner film.
Look at the star power involved there.
You're God, almost I wish Shadow that movie because of the star power.
This is the story from conception, no pun intended.
I don't like the, the way this synopsis that I envy the game is a young, internal and
worker is forced to confront his secret extraterrestrial heritage and earth is invaded by members
of his race.
It's Superman, okay.
And just so you know, that name barely hits mentioned in this movie.
It does get mentioned, but it's not really, and as per normal, no title card, no.
Great intro.
Yeah.
Enjoy that.
We also wasn't real D3D, which we, where we saw it, very well presented that way, too.
It begins on Krypton with his birth, literally.
We go into the destruction of Krypton, the introduction of Zod, the sending of him to
earth, the vanishing to the Phantom Zone of Zod and his associates.
My first, another one of my concerns, I was going to start talking about that.
Another one of my concerns going into this was how, as Chris Griffin once said, where is
the chase and how can I cut to it?
I was concerned that we were going to spend way too much time on the bleeding up to story.
But that makes any sense to you.
And the way that this thing is past and structured, you kind of, it's told in Flash
back, but it's not, it doesn't try to confuse you.
No, you know what's going on, you know, okay, this is, we've gone back a little
way so we can explain this.
One of the things I noticed, especially in you and I talked about this, is the kid who
plays the young Clark 13 year old Clark, very much looks like Tom Welling for Paulville.
Oh, I swear with that.
Frighteningly so, which I mean, you got to think that was done on purpose.
Oh, yeah.
Side note, have you seen the Mondo posters for this?

Oh, sweet God.
You know I'm a huge fan of Bondo posters as well.
That the Avengers Mondo posters was the wallpaper on my iPod Touch up until just about
two weeks ago.
Okay, I just want you to, this, this monitor right here, I want you to turn it.

If you thought the battle for New York and Avengers was bad, that is a walk in the
park compared to what happens to Metropolis.

What happened in Superman too, and they're original and their original fight was child's
play.
Yeah, I'll play with that.
So let's, let's now address visually, Zack Snyder, the director.
You know him.
You love him.
You can't live without him.
This is the guy that brought you 300.
This is the guy that brought you watchman.
And what have I been saying for a month, Zack Snyder, do not screw this up and I don't
put this all on the shoulders of Zack Snyder, because I'm very in the lead here.
If you follow me on Twitter, and yes, that robber that has spelled ERVIN, I said, the tweet
I sent was during the credit, the end credits of Man of Steel, attention, D.C. and Warner
Brothers.
I don't care what you have to do.
Pay David S. Goyer, the screenwriter, whatever he requires for the rest of Evern, pay his
grandchildren and their grandchildren.
Because from a superhero standpoint, right now, this guy cannot do wrong in my book.
He gets it.
Now, for those of you that don't understand where I'm coming from, this is the guy that
wrote the Batman trilogy that no one directed.
And was he also involved in Blade?
I believe he was.
And he's also almost chiefly responsible for the defense.
And he looks like Stanley Tucci.
Yes, he does.

Is this lady his wife, he's in this picture with?

Well, I know that Zack's production on this is his wife.

But David Goyer, Sir, you are a master.
Because I'm going to be honest.
Just as if I'm just a dude.
I went into this.
I went into this thing.
A little skeptical.
Very skeptical.
I had a margin of error because, and I'm not afraid to say it, Superman Returns was a
turd.
Yeah, I didn't enjoy it one return, so that was very disappointing.
Let's see.
I'm an island unto myself here, because I enjoyed Superman Returns.
That movie made me so mad.
I was just glad to have Superman back on the screen and it wasn't Superman 3 or 4.
And I was really kind of hoping they'd have figured out how to get time welling to do it.
But when I saw Henry Kavill and saw him in the suit, first of all, love what they did
with the suit.
Absolutely.
The suit looks great.
I don't miss the underwear on the outside.
I saw the first shot I saw of him is actually you see towards the end of the
film, because we saw this still of him standing in front of that safe.
That's the first shot.
The bank vault shot.
Looks great.
Not real over the top.
No.
He played it well.
He carries himself with a lot of stoic grace.
I think he really got to see the evolution of him as a character, which I thought was good.
It wasn't, oh, he realizes he's Superman and then here we go.
You know, it was he has to come to grips with the fact of this is who I am and how to
do I deal with this.
And there are some things to dress in the film, the difference is an atmosphere between
Krypton and Earth, which I don't think has ever really been addressed in the films.
Which was a really interesting twist.
You don't get Kryptonite, but you kind of get it at the same time, which I like.
And the way they explain that is the difference in the atmosphere weakens him, because
they have a stronger atmosphere than Earth does.
And as he grew up on Earth, he just became accustomed to Earth's atmosphere.
He got accustomed.
He was a baby when he was launched to Earth.
There was nothing that I saw in the film and went, you're kind of stretching me on this.
When I first heard there was going to be no mention of Kryptonite in this film, I was
concerned.
I was like, how do you do Superman and you don't have Kryptonite?
Because that's what my name is, is beingcript night.
But I didn't miss it.
And I liked it.
I didn't miss it at all.
I don't think if it like, for instance, Superman 2, do they mention Kryptonite?
Because at that point it already had to do it.
Yeah, I'd have to go back and look.
I don't think it is.
I don't think Kryptonite really plays into it.
And I'll be honest with you.
I'm kind of okay with the way that the story was told, I'm okay that if we don't get it.
Yeah.
Because somebody's always going to find a weakness.
Yeah.
But now, if when we do the second one, if it's going to be Luther, you kind of have to.
True.
But, and that was not it, too.
That they definitely did a nod towards Lexkor.
It's, it's, it's spotted a couple of times.
I wish, though, there were puts like a different villain than Lexlosa.
You have to.
It's like doing a man without the Joker.
It'll show up eventually, hands.
It'll show up eventually, but we've been Luther at the death.
I think we can get past Luther and we have what you have to do, Luther.
I mean, I'm not saying don't do Luther, but do we need Luther next?
What can you not put to villains in?
Don't, what aren't money.

What did you do with the second Batman film?

Who was the villain in the second Batman film?
Yeah.

One of the best opinions I heard going in was with the roles she's played.

She had the sassiness of the lowest if they I hate saying that word, but of the lowest
Lane we all know in love from the comics and the fire at her belly.
But and again, this is spoiler horrific and you're screwing yourself if you don't
want to know.
The fact that she knows from the Trump street.
She knows from the get go.
Yep.
I think makes that relationship better.
Just how do you explain this is what the only thing that I kind of had a hard time
swallowing is that everybody and their brother at this point knows what he did at the
end of this film.
What he did for the for humanity and they still don't pick him out of a crowd just because
he's wearing horn rim glasses and styles is air different.
Yeah, but that's so that's suspension to just believe and that's to me that was the only
thing about it.
And yes, we are talking about an alien that flies and can.
Ben steel and withstand the hate of the sun.
But the fact that no one but lowest knows who he is because he's wearing glasses.
Nobody knows who you are.
But that was the spot.
Yeah, he's like the same looks is to save and so you know when you put something
completely different or what you're looking at.
I don't know maybe it's just some kind of a Kryptonian Jedi mind trick or something.
I don't know, but that I like her knowing I because I spent a lot of the film going
please please do not do the memory erase thing do not do the memory erase thing.
The shortlist for Clark Matthew Good Army Hammer Matt Bomer Joe Manningielo from
True Blood Zach Efron and Colono Donahue and I don't know half of those people.
And apparently Kavill was actually the front runner for Superman Return.
Yes, he was and he was also the runner up to Daniel Craig for Casino Royale, Christian
Bale for Batman and Robert Pattinson for Edward Colitt.
I talk about you know waiting for your spot being a bridesmaid and then finding it.
No one of course produced this thing his syncopy pictures.
How much of his imprint that you feel watching this all of it.
He kept it dark, he kept it realistic.
One of the things that people were saying in the original you will believe a man can fly.
A lot of people like I heard an interview with Jeff Lowe on Fatman on Batman where Jeff Lowe
said now you're going to believe a man can exist in this world.
And that's what they went for in Batman, that's what they've gone for in Superman and
to me they have succeeded in space.
That's where a lot of people that are criticizing this film so harshly are having their
biggest issue.
And I think that these are the same people that cannot stand what Nolan did with the Batman
universe.
And I don't understand those people at all.
How can you do a superhero film in this day and age and not try to base it in reality?
I mean I think it's fairly evident that the Donner version of Batman, the Donner version
of Superman, not the same, would not cannot work in this day and age.
You couldn't go, given what the Batman trilogy set up, you couldn't go camping, you know,
you can't, it won't do you any good.
Well we have, we have all the proof in the world that we need, that a Donner, a Donnerized
Superman would not work.
It was called Superman Returns.
And how could you didn't tell me about Amy Adams' connection to Smallville?
I forgot about it.
She played his Jody Melville?
Yeah.
He was in like two episodes of Smallville.
Vigo Mortensen actually was considered for Zod at one point.
Yeah.
Remember that?
Let's talk about Michael Shannon.
If you know boardwalk empire, that is where he comes from.
This guy is one of my new favorite actors since boardwalk empire.
He brought a darkness to Zod that had to be there.
I mean a craziness to her.
For lack of a better term, he turns Zod into the terrorist that Zod is.
Yeah.
He was truly an animal.
I was very, very impressed with his performance.
And the fact that it wasn't just the three of them, like they took all of his people and
put him in the Phantom Zone and they all came back.
To me, that's the coolest part of it.
But you only really saw close quarter combat with the, well I can't even think of the
of the female.
First of this movie, what her name was, trying to get to it.
And the big brook heavy guy, you never really saw his face.
He mainly had that very space jockey promethias mask that they always had on when they
were walking around on.
And again, because of the, um, the atmosphere.
Yeah.
You know, a feora, uh, was paid by untayed trowel.
I'm totally screwing that up.
She was in Pandoram.
Never saw that.
Uh, let's see what if she was, you know, her from, she did a lot of stuff in Germany.
Fairly new to the scene.
Well, I thought she was very, very good.
Yeah.
Uh, you played that.
She was very Ursa like that same intensely loyal to Zod and his cause and took great
pleasure in dismembering people.
And you know what, challenge my man card, I dare you.
In the first 30 minutes alone, I welled up three times right there with you.
And it wasn't just because the 3D glasses were perfect balance of emotion and action.
I think that we need, that's our next topic that we need to talk about the two dads.
I think of one moment you'd grip my hand.
Oh, I did.
You know, Russell Crowe Kevin Costner.
Perfect.

The fact that both of his dads were Robin Hoods, I think it's great.

But think about that for a second.
Kevin Costner now is getting to that age where that patronally wise old man thing.

Like his portrayal of Jorrell is what I imagine Jorrell as, not Brando to me Brando was just
broadened for star power that wasn't needed.
Because I'm going to go ahead and I've been very in the lead for 26 minutes now.
This is the best Superman movie ever made.
Yeah.

As hard as him.
I respect Richard Donner.
I brought me leave the weapon, but I'm going to tell you something.
I guarantee you if you put true serum and Richard Donner right now, he would say the same thing.
That they did this better than I did.
Yes.
Superman the movie from 78 was perfect for its time.
And a, but you need a modern style now.
Well, you got to remember that was that is a post Star Wars world.
Literally the year after Star Wars.
They needed spectacle and star power.
And but at the same time safety.
They had to play things really close to the best in the 70s.
And they couldn't, there's no way they could go this route.
They'd scare people away.
I'm not going to put this film above the Dark Knight.
Because to be the Dark Knight is still the perfect superhero film on multiple levels.
I will put man of steel top four.
Because, well, we know, we know three, I know three of the top four.
And we're going to talk about one of them right now.
Avengers to me is apples and oranges.
Because, I mean, I can't compare them.
I can't.
But everybody's going to.
Of course they're going to because it's going to make a ton of money.
It's not going to make one point six billion.
Let's, let's not get stupid with it.
I will put the over under at the end of the day with this film.
Budget was 225.
It'll clear that before July 4th.
Yeah.
At the end of it, I'm going to say 7 750.
Do we know where it has and hasn't opened yet?
Well, I didn't they do the overseas premiere earlier this week?
I don't know.

I think I had some mention that was going to be over England.
Because they've been running press screenings like crazy for the past two weeks.
I am going to say.
This takes the bad taste of Superman returns out of my mouth.
Which could not make me happier.
But if they took some liberties that at certain points, I was like.
You're kind of rolling the dice here, kids.
Like what?
I mean, we can, we can talk about anything here, so.
My, again, my first concern was going to be the lack of Kryptonite.
But they handled that well.
And the whole low is knowing thing.
I was like, okay, I want to see where you take this.
I think because Kryptonite played such a heavy role in what bogged down Superman returns,
I think maybe that's what they kind of kept it at arms length on this.
Like how we started with Don, because really if you're going to have a villain,
let his first villain be one of his own people.
Caval or Kavill or I'll probably go back and forth on the next 10 minutes.
I think it's Kavill.
The emotion that he showed of how he was adjusting to being this thing that he didn't know he was.
I am very, I am hard pressed currently to find a flaw in this film.
It's not perfect.
But if you're going to find flaws, you're going to be nitpicking.
Yeah, you got to dig really deep and be looking really hard.
You're just trying to find something wrong with it, which I think is what a lot of critics have been doing.
Because the critics have not been kind to this film for whatever reason.
But your current rating is 57%.
So it's gone down one point.
It's gone down a point.
There's a 214 reviews, a 121 good 93 not.
But the user rating is 82%.
So if that tells you the difference here.
A Diane Lane is Martha Kent.
I thought it was great to be his rock and to be there for him.
And when he goes away and comes back and she is just as excited to see him as she was that he was born.
I mean, Diane Lane's greatness anyway.
Yeah.
And one of the most beautiful women on the planet.
I am so happy right now.
I am too, because I was, I was afraid I was going to want to beat a lot of Crow because I've been touting my excitement for this film and for Dolby Atmos in this film.
And I thought I was going to be just eating Crow.
But here's a run toward.
There's a lot of talk about DC trying to fast track a Justice League film.
Take your time.
Do it.
Don't do it at all.
No.
I don't think it's going to compete for Avengers.
That's going to be your problem.
And that's.
Avengers has set the bar so high.
And they took their time.
If they fast track it, that's when they're going to screw it up.
But they're talking 2015's the rumor.
There's no way.
You can't.
Don't.
Just don't do it.
Well, here's the problem.
If you wait too long.
They all's not getting any younger.
Oh, they're not going to get bail.
They'll do this.
You're going to have to go younger because.
Put Kavillman bail side by side.
I mean, there's a definite age difference.
Yeah.
And Goyer's already said that.
That bail's Batman does not exist in this universe.
So I find it hard to believe too.
But if anybody.
You're doing the same basic thing.
But if anybody would know it would be the guy that wrote the dead.
And so any wrote them both.
So if there's no room for bail's Batman and in Kavill's Superman universe, then we get another Batman.
But how would you get the pants?
I'm not the thing.
I'm not even on that wavelength right now.

I don't even think that you should even do a Man of Steel 2 by 2015.
You haven't started production on anything to follow this up yet.
You ain't going to be ready.
Well, you're going to have to deal with scheduling, too.
That's Kavill just turned 30.
Literally, a little around month ago.
Amy Adams is a year younger than me.
Wow.
Good Lord.
So you've got you've got that dynamic.
Oh, according to Kavill's Wikipedia page says despite reports that he was a container for Batman and Batman begins.
Kavill confirmed that he was that he'd never auditioned for or was ever offered the role of Batman.

So both of them have been known to be flawed from time to time.
Well, they can, you know, they do say about him being a final contender for Bond.
And that he was he was set to play Superman in Superman fly by when Mick G was attached to
Directed in 2004.
And then when Mick G pulled out and Brian Singer took over, he recasted with Brandon Ruth.

I just, I can't say enough good things about this film.
One thing we talked about is releasing this film Father's Day weekend.
It was a stroke of genius.

And that's one of the things that really welled me up with seeing the relationship
between Clark and his dad.
This is plural.
Well, yeah, kind of.
But I see it more from the cosner thing.

That, that's seen that you see in the trailer of him asking him if he could just keep on pretending
that he's his son.
And when John is in the horror of my son.
And you tell he chokes up when he says it.
And that gave me goosebumps every time I saw the trailer.
And when I saw it in the context of the scene here, it really got me.
Yeah, that, that brought me a taste of Mary's him.
I just, I cannot say enough good things about this film.
I, I would go see it again.
It's critical tomorrow.
I am of everything that is Clark Kent.
And I make no bones about it.
I have a Batman bias.

Well, you are the Batman of Miscate.

Actually, a friend of the show gum put something up in the Bruce Wayne of Miscate.
And I might have a comment was, I did not think that it got no.
Um, thank you, Zack Snyder.
Thank you, Chris Nolan.
Thank you, David Esgoyer.
I could not be happier with this film.
Is it the greatest superhero movie at all time?
The Dark Knight still wins.
Because that's a perfect film.
The Dark Knight is a perfect, perfect film.
Not even as a comic book film, just as a film.
It's phenomenal.
It's a gold standard.
But the did go with this movie.
Oh, geez.
Fight for, yeah.
This is easily top three or four.
And I think the only film that kind of, I,
One to for me is still Dark Knight Avengers.
The battle for third place is this and the first Iron Man.
Because just like Man of Steel,
I went into Iron Man with my guard up.
And I went in with very low expectations.
And I came out with my expectation with the room.
And I came out going.
That's how you do Iron Man.
Well, but where do you put the Spider-Man reboot that you were so blown a little bit behind that?
Little bit.
It's top 10 for me.
Because again, not a big Peter Parker guy.
I always found him to be real white.
Well, he's a teenager, right?
Yeah, you kind of got to expect that from a teenager.
But I get Garfield did a great job.
I'm looking forward to the second one.
Yeah, big time.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
And you know, again, kind of rewinding a little bit.
That's one of the things that really impressed me about watching,
Watching Clark evolve.
Going from embracing his role as a man.
Trying to embrace his role as a human, even though he's not.
Mm-hmm.
And then fully embracing his role as a superhero.
When his dad says, you can be the bridge between two worlds and two species.
I thought that was a great.
The sequence of when he's knocked out when he first gets on the ship.
Visually, that took my breath away.
Where cut to Zod and everything's dark, cut back to Clark.
He's in the suit and he's standing on skulls.
That was awesome.
That was disturbing.
That was amazing.
And did you catch, and if you weren't paying attention, you might have missed it.
When he started that conversation with Zod, started that conversation with him.
Did you notice Zod's costume?
I wasn't really paying that much attention.
It was a complete mirror image of the Superman costume.
He was a wearing his armor.
He was an all black with his,
but that's what he wore at the end.
With his, but no, with the glyph on his chest, with a cape.
He had a black, black, black, black, black.
I mean, it was a complete, it was almost like the symbiote costume for Spider-Man.
It was like a completely black Superman costume, with the Zod family crest on it.
And Michael Shen and played it perfectly.
Would not have changed one nanosecond of his performance.
He was frightening.
He was just flat out frightening.
Whereas Terran Stamp was just kind of a debug.
Just a little, you know, kind of a simp.
He was scary.
But I will tell you who I was a little bit.
If you held a gun to my head and said, you have to point out one flaw.
I just, it just came to me.
Larry Fishbone.
Didn't really give him much to do.
Perry White's kind of a big part of the story.
And he gets what about five minutes of screen time total.
Well, maybe the second, maybe the might have more.
Well, because he does work at the point of the day.
Well, I'm not spoiling the final line of the film.
Not going to do that.
You need to watch the film for the final line of the film.
And well played.
That's all I have to say.
That, that was your one real true wink in a nod moment.
Yes.
Wait, wait, no, no.
Oh, my gosh.
And I cannot recommend this film enough.
Yeah.
You haven't seen Go and say it.
Go to the last track.
But when we start to wrap this up, if it's not there already.
No, we're way, we're way away from that.
Yeah.
Any score that has a drum orchestra?
Yeah.
If you get this, if you get the CD to this score.
Well, I don't know if the one disk has the pictures.
You may not.
You get the limited edition.
It was just because the packaging is so wicked.
But you open this thing up to the center of the booklet.
Which you didn't before I did.
I did.
I just didn't pay attention when I was looking at.
And it is a, a studio room that is nothing.
But probably about nine or ten drum kids.
Yes.
And it may be like eight, maybe like seven or eight.
And the drum orchestra has all seated around the conductor.
And I mean, she, she lees got her back to the camera.
And that just told me.
Yeah.
That's like, oh my god.
Sheila, really?
That was, again, on Zimmer.
Congratulations on that, sir.
You'll hear, you'll hear it here as we're winding this thing down.
You'll hear that drum orchestra and it's full fury.
Great job by wetta with the visual effects.
Because you knew they were going to get ILM because Disney owns them now.
Yep.
I did see Richard Taylor was involved in designing the weapons.
That's the guy that created all the weaponry for Lord of the Rings.
Oh, really?
I, I could not be happier with this film.
There, I just, if I had it in me, if I had this strength,
I'd watch it from start to finish right now.
I loved this.
Somebody else pay for it.
Because the tickets are cheap.
I will say this, I will own this.
Oh, God, yes.
This will be a blue ray purchase.
I want to give you another little interesting bit of trivia.
One of the actors considered for the role of Jonathan Kent.
Bruce Greenwood.
Who has been the voice of Batman?
Yes.
Yes indeed.
How cool would have been if they would have gotten camera right?
Of course everybody would say, who is this guy?
You are my son.
So many goosebump moments in this movie.
And, and so many of them were preceded by this little musical motif right here.
