Just Wondering...with Norm Hitzges

WWJD: What Will Jerry Do as Cowboys Can’t Run, Can’t Defend, Can’t Win

October 21, 2026

Norm Hitzges examines the Dallas Cowboys' struggles against Green Bay, focusing on Jerry Jones watching his team lose while the offense cannot run the ball and the defense cannot stop the pass. Over the last 18 seasons, the Cowboys have beaten Green Bay only once in 13 meetings. Hitzges analyzes offensive and defensive breakdowns from the Cowboys' loss to the Packers, questioning head coach Mike McCarthy's strategy of passing 70% of plays while managing only 3.2 yards per carry on the ground.

About this episode

Key takeaways

  • The Cowboys' inability to run the ball (3.2 yards per carry, 15 running plays vs. 55 pass plays) forces over-reliance on passing, which plays into opposing defenses' hands
  • Dallas passed the ball on seven of every ten plays this season, a strategy Hitzges argues cannot win games with regularity
  • The offense relies on short passes (dink plays of 3-6 yards) rather than downfield throws; Dallas had only one play of 20+ yards in the entire game against Green Bay
  • The Cowboys' defense allowed Green Bay to convert 11 of 18 third downs, including many third-and-long situations, suggesting no real defensive improvement
  • Dak Prescott took a ferocious beating with seven official hits and brutal contact, yet the offense never punished Green Bay's constant blitzing strategy

I can't remember the last time we saw a shot of Jerry just by himself. I'm sure there were people to this side of him and that side of him, but the shot was so close. It seemed like it was Jerry alone in the screen.

And this was Jerry Jones who turned 84 five days before the game, And he was looking down at the Lambeau Field turf, staring at a cowboy team that was pathetic. His cowboy team that was pathetic. Jerry had seen this before.

He's had his heart cut out so many times by Green Bay. It was late nineteen ninety seven at Lambeau Field. I was there.

It would be the end of the Barry Switzer era. The Cowboys came into the game six and five, five games left in the season. They needed a nice run at the end of the season to make the playoffs, but Green Bay squashed them like a bug, 45 to 17.

That would be the start of five straight losing games to finish that season, And that would be the end basically of the remnants of the team Jerry Jones had turned over to Barry Switzer that Jimmy Johnson had turned over Barry Switzer. Then there was twenty thirteen at AT And T Stadium. The Cowboys ahead 26 to three at halftime champagne glasses clinking everywhere.

And Green Bay was being quarterbacked by somebody named Mike Flynn. And Green Bay scored five consecutive unanswered second half touchdowns to pull out a 3736 win, the largest comeback win in Green Bay history. And then the next year, 2014, Des caught it, didn't he?

It was the divisional playoff game at Lambeau. Officially, Des didn't catch it. And the Cowboys lost by five points, 20 six-twenty one.

And then there was 2016, the divisional playoffs again, this time at AT And T Stadium. And Aaron Rogers pulled off that miracle 20 yard completion, a tight end Jared Cook to fish Green Bay's fat out of the fire, setting up a 51 yard field goal for Mason Crosby and the Packers won it thirty one twenty eight. Then there was 2,017.

Dallas was ahead 21 to six over the Packers. But the Packers rallied to win 3531. And in 2022, Green Bay was down 28 to 14 in the fourth quarter, and then they rallied for 17 unanswered points to beat the Cowboys 3,128.

And the '23 playoffs, Dallas had completed a twelve and five season on their former Green Bay coach, Mike McCarthy. They got thrashed at home 48 to 32, but it was way worse than that. If you remember that game.

Entering the fourth quarter of play, Green Bay, a decided underdog in the game, led 48 to 16, And he became the first number seven seed in the history of the NFL to win a playoff game. Yes, Jerry Jones has stared down onto the field to see pathetic cowboy efforts against Green Bay in the past. In the last eighteen seasons, these two teams have met regular season plus playoffs 13 times.

13 games in the last eighteen seasons. Jerry has seen his cowboy team beat Green Bay once. Oh, yes.

And then there was that 40 to 40 tie. Most people think Jerry Jones is all about money, only about money. That's all he cares about is making money.

Now listen, Jerry Jones is extremely good at making money, But I've known Jerry thirty seven years now. Did a radio show with him every week of football season for three or four years. I believe this.

If the gods of football said to Jerry today, write a $3,000,000,000 check, and we will guarantee you will win the Super Bowl and raise your own Lombardi Trophy over your head. Jerry would write that check-in ten seconds. Watching Jerry stare miserably down onto the turf at yet another cowboy miserable effort against Green Bay.

I couldn't help but wonder what Jerry was thinking about. This year's team is a mess. At 84, he must believe he's too old to even consider rebuilding.

Plus, he doesn't have the available draft choices next year and the year after to put to support such an effort through the draft. So I was left thinking WWJD. What will Jerry do?

Next, a look at the game and some of the players in it. What do you want from your favorite restaurant? Fantastic personal service, a cheery welcoming spotless atmosphere, and, of course, great food.

It's every Tuesday, 05:30 at Scout at the Statler Scout. I'm glad I can be with the guys now, and I am assuming the role of leader. Entering the game Sunday against Green Bay, the massive Dallas concern was its defense.

And from the final in the game, Green Bay scoring 23 points. On paper, that looks okay. No.

No, it wasn't okay. Grindre dropped a half a dozen passes, and two, or I think three of them would have been touchdown passes. And the Packers also tossed in 11 penalties for 96 yards.

And of course, because they're this year's Packers, they can't run the ball against me, much like the Cowboys. Dallas allowed this Packer team to convert 11 of eighteen third downs, many of them third and long to go that the Green Bay Packers converted. No.

No, honestly, this game was not any sign that the Dallas defense was improving. Now let's go to the offense. Gotti, g o t I, greatest offense there is.

It was miserable for the second consecutive game. This team cannot run the football. It cannot run the football.

They had only 15 running plays against Green Bay. The longest of them went for eight yards, eight measly yards. 3.2 yards a carry.

That's dismal. I got a question. Okay, Terrence Steele has been a problem at right tackle.

But if the rest of the offensive line is solid, why can't we run a football? Why? Dallas is the bottom third in this league and the ability to run the football.

And and that leads to a terrible imbalance. Because you cannot run the football. You must then throw the football, and you must throw the football and throw it and throw it and throw it and throw it and throw it throw it, and that plays right into the hands of a defense who knows what's coming.

In this game, there were 55 past plays called and only 15 running plays. Now, the game had a great deal to do with that. Dallas fell behind 17 and nothing at halftime, but but when the game was much tighter, Dallas can't run a football.

They just can't. But for the year, forget this single Green Bay game. For the year, of every 10 plays called, the Cowboys passed the ball, seven of them.

That is not a strategy to win games with any regularity. And that strategy is in the hands of the head coach, Rhyn Schopenhauer. What makes this worse for me is that not only do we throw the ball all the time, but we dink it and dink it and dink it and dink it, dink it, tiny little passes, tiny, tiny little passes, three yards, six yards, four yards, five yards.

Listen, Green Bay can't run the ball, but they slung it down field of the wide receivers, golden or Watson all Sunday evening. Dallas had only one play of 20 yards or more. And that came in the last two minutes of the game after the outcome had been decided.

It was, by the way, a 21 yard pass to George Pickens. CD lamb, their number one receiver. Oh, yes, he had nine catches.

But for less than eight yards per catch. Flournoy, the number three receiver, he had seven catches. But for 5.7 yards per catch.

Dink, dunk, dink, dunk. But perhaps, because they couldn't run the ball. And be...

Perhaps because their protection was so poor. Dallas felt they had to get rid of the ball quickly. Yes.

There was only one sack in the game. That was only sack once, but he took a terrible beating. The worst beating I can remember Dak Prescott taking in a long time.

Officially, he was hit seven times passing. Some of them brutal hits, but those don't count the roughing the passer penalties against Green Bay in those seven hits. Dak took a ferocious beating.

Green Bay's strategy, blitz. Even if you don't get there, Dak's just gonna throw a tiny pass to get the ball out of his hands. Coach shotty's offense never found a way to punish Green Bay for their constant strategy of blitzing.

Now, as for the players, the right tackle, Terrence Steele is liability. And the guy Dallas gave up a third and a sixth next year, getting a four back for Broderick Jones to play behind steel. It apparently isn't good enough to challenge him for the job.

The tight end Ferguson, he's been benched in favor of Brevin Span Ford, who by the way is a very good blocker, and that brings even more into the question of why can't the Cowboys run the ball if the tight end's also a good blocker? The cornerback, Ron Bland, he keeps getting successfully abused by opposing offenses. The pass rush had three sacks for small yardage, But love also had the time to throw long many, many, many times time that that did not have, or we don't even know if it was ever called.

Dallas allowed the two Green Bay wide receivers, Golden and Watson, nine catches, same number of catches as C. D. Lamb.

But for 168 yards, those two wide receivers averaged 19 yards a catch. Lamb averaged just under eight. Donovan Eziraku, Von Miller, the linebacker d winners had an interception, but that was the only time he showed up in the stat sheet.

They all had minimal impact. The rookie number one draft choice Malachi Lawrence was on the field for 39 defensive snaps. 39.

The final breakdown by the NFL records, tackles, assisted tackles, sacks, tackles for loss, fumbles forced interceptions and passes defensed. In his 39 plays Malachi Lawrence tipped one of Jordan, Jordan Love's passes. One pass defended in 39 snaps by their number one draft choice defense event.

The schedule just ahead suggests a fair amount of winnable games. There's the Eagles next Monday, and they're so beaten up and their quarterback Jalen Hertz is gone for the year. Then there's Arizona, Indianapolis, Tennessee, all of those games within the next five weeks.

But right now, there's no way to say for certainty that this Cowboy team is better than any of those teams. Any of those limpers. This team is amongst the limpers.

A few years ago, I began getting these huge ugly blood blotches just beneath the skin of my arms and hands. The condition's called senile purpura. And no, you don't have to be senile to experience this embarrassment.

It happens as you age. And then to cover it up, we begin wearing long sleeves, even when it's hot. It took two years working with a New Jersey lab to refine the all natural ingredients of full moon healing.

Gently massage a very small amount into the skin, and within a day, the blotches begin to fade. See now, purpura usually takes weeks to disappear. But this bomb cuts the timeline to about a week.

And ordering's so easy. Just go to the website, fullmoonhealingco.com. And finally, Jed York, the owner of the San Francisco 49ers, can finally watch his team play this coming Sunday against Atlanta.

You see, Jed York was suspended by the league from watching his team play the first six games of the season. All San Francisco wins by the way. So why did Jed York get suspended?

Well, of all, you gotta know Jed York's a billion billion billion billion billion billion billionaire. He's got more money than you can ever imagine. But he was suspended for those six games, and fined $500,000 for negotiating over the phone to have sex with a prostitute.

A prostitute that turned out to be a police woman. Jed York answered an ad. Oh my, already this story is starting to get sorted, isn't it?

He answered an ad and negotiated on the phone the price of a sexual encounter, sort of a description of the menu of what might happen. They arrived at $160 It gets a little more sorted, doesn't it? A $160.

And then, then, after answering an ad, and agreeing to a $160, The last part of this was the prostitute slash policewoman told Jed York where to meet her for the fulfillment of their negotiations. He was to meet her at a mobile home park. Now that's classy.

Answer an ad $160. Meet you at a trailer park. That's classy.

For that, Jed York was suspended those six games, and fined $500,000, which to him is a mere drop in the bucket, which then leads you to understand why he wouldn't even consider paying more than a $160. But, hey, that's who he is. We all have our price, right?

And that was Jed York's price. But at least now the suspension's over, and he's paid his fine, and he can watch his 49ers play this coming Sunday in Atlanta. And now a word from our title sponsor.
