Is that an Ipod?!?! | Kenny
This week on Your Dark Companion, Mike sits down with one of Dallas’ most iconic, mysterious, musically gifted unicorns — guitarist Kenny Withrow of New Bohemians fame.
Before they get to that, we kick things off with lightning strikes, Election Day scolding, and a moment where no one is entirely sure if the equipment is haunted or Greggo just breathed near it.
Once Kenny settles in, we get the origin story: leaving Forgotten Space, rediscovering New Bohemians, living in an Airstream, recording records in a barn, and learning that silence + trees + no traffic = some kind of musician enlightenment ritual.
Kenny walks Mike through the art of improvisation, the lost glory of Dallas music scene bong tournaments, Rush-based peer pressure, writing with Edie Brickell, reinventing the band after loss, and how he accidentally dragged Mike into becoming a Grateful Dead guy.
We also get two unreleased tracks played straight off an iPod because Kenny is either a genius… or refuses to join the 21st century out of principle.
It’s warm. It’s weird. It’s funny. It’s deeply musical. And once again… pants are optional.
