Cowboys Collapse Against Arizona, Putrid Run Game & My Plea for Cornell Green | Just Wondering
Norm Hitzges breaks down the Cowboys' collapse against Arizona, a historic loss from a 24-10 fourth-quarter lead with 14:20 remaining. He examines the putrid run game (39 carries for 93 yards, longest run 7 yards), the defense's inability to stop the Cardinals, and the coaching struggles under Brian Schottenheimer. The episode also covers Jason Witten's move to college coaching at Oklahoma, the apparent split between Joe Buck and Troy Aikman at ESPN, and a plea to Jerry Jones to induct Cowboys legend Cornell Green into the Ring of Honor.

Sunday's game against Arizona was wildly entertaining, nerve racking, gut wrenching, wrenching. And for the Cowboys, it was just embarrassing. It was a game where the Cowboys totally collapse in a heap in the fourth quarter against the dog and determined.
Yes, undermanned Arizona team that on paper simply is not as good as the Dallas Cowboys. And consider some numbers with fourteen minutes and twenty seconds to go in the game in the fourth quarter. Dallas led 24 to 10 by 14 points.
And they lost. In the history of the Dallas Cowboys, since 1960, the Cowboys had played two zero four home games in which they led by at least 14 points. And they had never lost such a game before.
Sixty six years without a collapse like this. Now, let's go to this century. Arizona, since 2000 in games in which they trailed by 14 points or more in the fourth quarter had this record.
One win, 174 losses, and one tie. And since 2000 for the Cowboys, any place home or away when leading by 14 points in the fourth quarter, 14 or more, the Cowboys were 69 and o. Now, another trend.
And this one should gall Jerry Jones, almost as much as anyone you can think of. The Cowboys continue to lose games when they're favored. So far this year, they've lost to the Giants, Tampa Bay and now Arizona, when they were favored in the game.
And last year, they lost to Chicago, Carolina, UGG, Arizona again, the Giants, Minnesota, and the Chargers. That's right. Last year, the Cowboys lost six games when they were favored.
In coach Brian Schottenheimer's career with the Cowboys, his record is now 10, 14, and one. Nine of those 14 losses have come when the Cowboys were favored in the game. That is flatly unacceptable.
The catastrophe of this game, what it means in the standings. This is such a winnable division. Washington and Philadelphia look like they're just goners.
So you get to the playoffs by winning the division, but this loss dropped the Cowboys three games behind the Giants in the loss column. And realize ahead for the Cowboys games with the 40 niners, the Rams, Seattle, Jacksonville, and the Giants, five very solid teams. If the Cowboys should win all the rest of their games, and pull an upset in one of those five games, they would still finish with an eight and nine record.
And that just is not acceptable. But it gets worse. Arizona pulled off this rally, scoring 23 points in the last twenty minutes of play with their number two quarterback Gardner Minshew.
What a mustache in charge. And in barely over twenty minutes of play, Minshew passed for more yards than Dak Prescott did in sixty five minutes. And the Cardinals were without their number two and four wide receivers who left with injuries.
It got so bad that Arizona was using semi Fajoco at wide receiver. You remember him? He was originally drafted by the Cowboys.
And after two years here, they dropped him thinking he couldn't play. And he's bounced around the league. And there he is playing in an upset against the Cowboys.
And there's even more. Arizona had lost its young star running back Jeremiah Love to injury. He was the number four pick in last year's draft.
And then they lost his backup Bam Knight, who suffer a very bad concussion when drilled in the head in a dirty play. DeMar by DeMarvion overshone, who rammed him in the head with his helmet and shoulder while night was already in the grasp of another cowboy tackler. Overshown can expect a sizable NFL fine for that play.
But it didn't even draw a flag in a game where Dallas really did seem to have the better of the officiating. They missed that play. They missed a pass interference against Joey Porter in the long play and they may have missed another interference.
It the loss of love and night left Arizona with one running back, one running back, Tyler Algier. They had nobody else to bring in if Tyler Algier got either really tired or hurt. So what did Tyler Algier do?
He ripped off a career day, runs of 63 yards for a touchdown, 50 yards, a 144 yards total rushing, 47 more receiving, two touchdowns. Tyler Alger torches the Cowboys. I'm telling you, there's so much blame to go around here.
So let's start handing out that blame next on Just Wondering. What do you want from your favorite restaurant? Fantastic personal service?

So who gets black marks for Sunday's catastrophe against the Cardinals? Let's start with what is supposed to be the strength of this team, the offense. Why can't this team run the football?
It is totally healthy. The quarterback's healthy. The running back's healthy.
The blocking back's healthy. The receivers are healthy. The tight end is healthy.
Any offensive line, all five of them played every play on Sunday. Why can't they run the football? Oh, yes, the week before versus depressed and seeming giving up Philadelphia.
The Eagles tore them up for over 200 yards rushing. But even with that glittering game on its record, the Cowboys now stand twenty fifth in the league and tied for twenty fifth with two other teams averaging a mere 3.8 yards per carry. That doesn't get it done kids.
Against Arizona. 39 rushes. 93 yards.
That is putrid. Just flat putrid. The longest run by a cowboy on Sunday against Arizona, seven yards, 39 times they ran the ball, and the longest run was seven yards.
He knew who ran for seven yards. That would be Dak Prescott. That's right.
No running back on this team managed to carry longer than six yards. Our offensive line is supposed to be one of the better offensive lines in the league. The Sunday morning Dallas Morning News headline on the day of the game.
Front page, I had a headline offensive line finds a strong identity. Well, by golly, they lost at noon Sunday, if they'd ever found that strong identity. That performance running the football was baloney.
And add one more thing. They allowed four sacks of Dak Prescott. They've got a good reputation.
But what is this offensive line in reality? Now, to the Cowboys' defense, because there is no D on the Cowboys. Dallas is three and five.
There are three wins this year came when the offense put up at least 34 points in the game. But when the Dallas offense doesn't get to 34 points this year, they're zero-five. It's just like last year.
The offense must keep scoring and scoring and scoring and scoring, because the defense cannot be counted on for a stop. And the defense with all its additions. They look just as bad as last year's defense, which was it was the worst in cowboy history.
The defensive coordinator that took over Christian Parker, he's highly touted. I I'm not ready to throw him overboard yet. But what's happening here?
The Cowboys have several highly regarded players. Are they highly regarded or highly overrated. Let's look at some things.
Well, the defensive line of the linebackers. And you stop the run. And that's not the first time that's happened this year.
Cornerback, Duron Bland, he just keeps getting roasted. Teams pick him out and go after him. This offense, this defense on Sunday allowed Arizona, just the Arizona Cardinals for heaven's sakes, to run for two zero two yards and pass for two sixty five yards.
The high watermark for the season this year for Arizona used to be the 30 points they scored against San Francisco, but not any longer. They now have a 33 they put up against Dallas. And this offense earlier this season have had scores in a game of seven twenty four, 21, eighteen and sixteen.
Yeah, this is not a juggernaut that scored 33 points on Sunday against the Cowboys. The Cowboys keep groping for answers and changing various spots in the lineup. Brevin Spanford has taken over a tight end and now it's his job because Jake Ferguson's hurt again.
What's happening with George Pickens? Out of the 74 offensive snaps on Sunday, he played only 42 of them. What's happening there?
And he was targeted only four times in the passing game. The defensive backs PJ lock and Kobe Durant are healthy again, and they played tons on Sunday. But the secondary seems no better.
Will the magic pill be getting safety Jalen Thompson back sometime? The buzz in training camp and early in the season was a third round draft choice named Jason Barham. They couldn't say enough nice things about him.
So over the last few weeks, he's been steadily losing time. He's now lost his job, starting job to Shemar James. And Jayshawn Barham on Sunday was on the field for only 16 defensive snaps.
He played only 20% of the Cowboys snaps on Sunday. And that rookie first round draft choice Malachi Lawrence, he did play 40 snaps. But in the 40 snaps, he recorded one quarterback hit, not a sack, one quarterback hit.
Nothing else. No tackles, no assisted tackles, no sacks, no nothing. In 40 plays, one quarterback hit, and in his 16 plays, Jayshawn Barham had one tackle.
You can see why they're losing playing time. Right now the Dallas Cowboys are in trouble. Their offense is just not what everyone thought it would be.
And the defense looks no better than last year. It's it's just a stinking mess. Rhyner Schottenheimer's coaching seat seems to be getting hotter by the week though Jerry Jones says everybody else let the head coach down on Sunday.
That just seems I'm sorry to say this. It just seems like another Jerry story to me. But surely, this Sunday, this coming Sunday, the Cowboys can beat the disheveled and disheartened Indianapolis Colts, can't they?
Wait a minute. Wasn't that the same thing we said last week about Arizona? Are you just wondering where your next spectacular vacation will be?
Relax. Feel the sun on your body. Let your cares melt away at the all inclusive Cerenian Bay Resort in Southern Belize.
It's literally built right on the sand. The ocean, your ocean is just a few barefoot steps away. Laid back luxury, terrific food, a swim up bar, a spa, air conditioned gym, unimaginable service, fishing, snorkeling in gorgeous turquoise waters.
Do you want relaxation or do you need adventure? You choose at Ceridian Bay. Mary and I have been there three times and this summer will be number four.
Take a cozy bungalow for two or bring the whole family to villas that can accommodate up to 14. Cerenianbay.com, S irenian. The sand and the sea are just waiting for you to get here.
My wife, Mary, is the co creator of Full Moon Healing Balm. And I guess I'm the reason this terrific cream was developed. A few years ago, I began getting these huge, ugly blood blotches just beneath the skin of my arms and hands.
The condition's called senile purpura. And no, you don't have to be senile to experience this embarrassment. It happens as you age.
And then to cover it up, we begin wearing long sleeves, even when it's hot. It took two years working with a New Jersey lab to refine the all natural ingredients of full moon healing. Gently massage a very small amount into the skin, and within a day, the blotches begin to fade.
See now, purpura usually takes weeks to disappear. But this bomb cuts the timeline to about a week. And ordering's so easy.
Just go to the website, fullmoonhealingco.com. Finally, three notes regarding cowboy legends. First, the University of Oklahoma upset about their offense apparently.
That was after the defense allowed 42 points to South Carolina. But upset about their offense. Head coach Brent Venables fired offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and named as the interim offensive coordinator for OU.
Jason Whitten. When Whitten finished his career, he quickly went into head coaching of a private school in the Dallas area and did very well. Now he's jumped into college coaching.
Suddenly he's an interim offensive coordinator. It appears that Jason Witten is on a very fast track to being a head coach in college football very soon. Next, when the stories first broke that ESPN had given Monday Night Football play by play man, Joe Buck, an enormous new six year $118,000,000 extension in September.
I like I suspect many of you simply waited for the details of the next announcement. The extension for his broadcast partner of twenty five years, Troy Aikman. But Aikman's contract was never going to happen.
Next, whispers of a major pregame argument between Buck and Aikman surfaced, then reports that Aikman might consider for an office job, maybe even the Cowboys. He's not gonna do that. Buckman, Buck and Aikman for years have been considered the premier broadcasting team in the NFL.
It still hasn't been announced, but a divorce appears imminent. Buck apparently without telling Aikman anything, began negotiating his new deal months ago. And with the understanding being that he very well might have a new partner in the booth next season.
That all sounds unfathomable. And Aikman's reactions, they feel like he seems to feel betrayed. Who will Bucks partner be?
Where will Aikman be next season? Could this actually be happening? In the end, to me it all just seems very, very sad.
In this last story, I'm going to do something I've never done. I'm going to beg Jerry Jones to right or wrong. Two weeks ago, Cowboys legend Cornell Green passed away at 86 years old.
Most current cowboy fans and media probably know little of him his name. They don't know his fabulous career. And like so many things that are 50 and 60 years old, they've gradually disappeared, which is such a shame.
Cornell Green never played college football. At Utah State, he was a basketball star. He was a two time All American in 1961 and '62.
Still the school's all time leading rebounder. Because of his heroics, Utah invited... Got invited to the NIT in 1961, and then the NCAA playoffs in '62.
And they finished number eight in the country that year. Utah State. The Cowboys scouting legend Gil Brandt saw the remarkable athleticism in green and gave him a thousand dollars to come to Cowboys camp as an undrafted rookie.
The six foot four two fifteen pound Green took the grand almost as a lark. He was headed for a career in the NBA. But Green never got to the NBA.
Instead, he stepped right into a job at cornerback with the Cowboys. And thirteen years later, when he retired, Cornell Green had never missed a game in his entire NFL career. 182 consecutive games played.
And by the way, tack on 15 more games in the playoffs. He spent eight years at corner, five years at safety. He he had 34 career interceptions.
That's still sixth best in cowboy history. And he blocked 10 kicks. And yes, that is still number one in cowboy history.
Cornell Green earned five Pro Bowl invitations, and that's back when making the Pro Bowl really meant something. He was first team all NFL three times. The Cowboys thought so much of him that during his playing career, they also asked him to be a scout.
And after his playing career, he spent 35 scouting for the Cowboys and Denver Broncos, And he got Scout of the Year in the NFL in 2010. Bob Lilly called him the most unmost underrated cowboy player in history. And here's where I beg Jerry Jones, please Jerry.
Go ask the Ring of Honor members like Bob Lilly, Mel Renfro, Roger Staubach, Cliff Harris about Cornell Green. Jerry tends to only induct someone in the Ring of Honor until the NFL has put them into the league's Hall of Fame. But Jerry, just because the league has never corrected this oversight, please don't make the same mistake.
Cornell Green should be a Hall of Famer, but he never will be. But he should be in the ring of honor. Jerry, if you had a player this good during your tenure as an honor, there'd be no question he'd be in the ring of honor.
It should have been done years and years and years ago. Jerry, please write this wrong. Cornell Green belongs in the Cowboys Ring of Honor.
And now a word from our title sponsor. Today's episode has been brought to you by Fluent Financial, retire earlier, live better, and by Bob's Steak and Chophouse on Lemon in Dallas and in Craig Ranch in McKinney. Bob's, a Dallas tradition for more than thirty years.
