Hello, and welcome to another episode of three wide at Scout. We are here today inside the Stadler Hotel or the Stadler Hilton as it was once known. It's just a Stadler now.
Right? Yeah. Just a Stadler.
The Hilton thing is of a bygone era. The Hilton thing is what it was when I was a kid. So, that gives you a little bit of a timeline there if you will.
Anyway, how old is the Statler? 1914 or 1941? We, Brie and I got the dates mixed up last '41, I think, right?
I think it's '14. '14? No, '40.
'41. Okay. Yeah, that sounds about right.
For Dirk. It is rain since then. Yeah.
They didn't have many modern hotels back in the 1914. So, yeah, it's gotta be '41. Anyway, it's been here for a long time and we are here in it today to do another round of three wide.
Joining me today, we have Shoopy. Hello. Hello, Shoopy.
If all goes well, I will not be talking much because these two actually know football. Oh, please. And this other that he referenced there in addition to me is the great Victor Viaba.
Yeah. Gracias. Gracias.
Victor Viaba who does play by play for the Cowboys, for the Rangers? No. For the Mavericks.
Oh, for the Mavericks. I have done Rangers. There was a project with some baseball games and a handful of baseball games for like five years and I would got to work with the great Jose Guzman.
Yes we're actually doing home games it was an interesting project but- unfortunately didn't last because- it was right in the middle when I wasn't having much to do so it was really great yeah but the but yeah but I did some baseball too. And then I also have done a good number of PA announcing, both in the Cotton Bowl and also at AT And T Stadium. And at the old stadium too at the Texas Stadium.
See? The man Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to AT And T Stadium. I can't do that.
You say, don't want even be wearing a microphone right now. But I will say those Rangers games that Victor worked were I got to work for most of those too as his audio guy because those were from the Fox Southwest Studios or at least Correct. That's right.
Yeah. Those are... That's what you're referring to.
Yeah. That's where Yeah. We first met.
Yeah. The project got kinda squirrelly, if you will. Is it wrong to say squirrelly?
No. Because It's very fair to call it that. Yeah.
Because it was it was a Time Warner Fox Sports project Oh, yeah. Where Time Warner was getting a full broadcast with Spanish graphics and everything and putting it on a channel that was seen throughout all the subscribers of Time Warner. So the interesting part was we did home games and a a smattering of games like twenty five and thirty.
One year, we did 55. And the... With with the...
If the if the ring... Excuse me. If the Rangers were playing the Rays or playing the Angels, they would see us doing doing the home game.
And when the rangers were at angels, the subscribers in this area would see their talent. Their guys. Their guys.
Yeah. Same with the Rays, for example. So it was great.
You know? We we got to do it at the stadium because to me... I mean, to me, all of a sudden, walking to...
Walking into a booth, putting on a headset, working with Jose Guzman. I mean, I'm I'm getting chills just thinking about it because it was... I mean, I I don't understand how there's play by play guys that don't look at the former player and just what did he what did he say?
Yeah. Why why why is he going out there? And they...
Jose would... Like, the the pitching coach would go out there, and I'd say, Jose, what's he telling him? He's telling him this, and I was like, wow.
There you go. Great. Yeah.
So it was it was a really fantastic time. I do remember seeing you up there in the press box back in the day because, you know, I was out there doing whatever it was that I was doing at the time and, you know, just covering the game. And I didn't know it at the time, but I was also formulating the ticket, but that's for another another time.
But I do remember running into you in the hall every now and then and and just seeing you and when I found out that Victor Viado was coming on board with us, then I knew Ryan. I remember those days because when I'd see Mike Reiner, I'd be like, wow. It's right, Mike, Mike Reiner.
Victor, I still do that. Well, I'm kind of feeling the energy here too, you know? Yeah.
Because I mean, is. Intimidating. It is the great Mike Reiner.
And I'd be going, oh, man. It's victory. No.
Oh, that's... It should be it's Victor. No.
I I doubt you. I know it's But it's funny. You met my daughter, Katya, before we started doing all this.
Because Katya said, yeah. Victor Vialis went down. You're like, oh my god.
Victor Vialis, you're down. Yes. I couldn't believe it.
It's a great catch You've always been a big man. Oh, Oh, golly. Still are.
Man. Woo hoo. That's awesome.
It's gonna carry you through the rest of the week. Oh, no. For the rest of the year.
Go Cowboys. Yes. Go Cowboys.
Exactly. Well, what was it like doing Cowboys this week? Well, you know, it was sort of a tale of two cities because the first half was 16 to six and everybody was kinda like, well, is this what you came for?
Are you not entertained? You know, after the real thing and a long week and Brian Schottenheimer basically saying, hey, it's my fault. You know, I got to think and you know, the Bill Parcells time, you know, when Bill Parcells would...
I I would not miss a press conference of Bill Parcells. I was there every single time. Yeah.
I was there when the air came out of the room because of the the the plays that they would run. I don't know if you know what I'm talking about. But we can leave that alone.
But anyway I want to hear about it. Yeah. Okay.
Alright. Well, I'll tell you. Okay.
But let me let me just finish this point. Because Bill Parcells, you know, he would just call it like it is and say and and you know, he he wasn't like, oh, I love this and I love that and all that's really not to say that Brian Schottenheimer is entirely that way. But everything seems to be very positive.
With Parcells, it's like, hey, you know what? I got to handle 53 different personalities. Why don't you go do that?
You know? It's like... And then the whole Terrell Owens thing, I mean The player.
The player. I mean, he walked into the press conference. Do you remember where the press conference was in that little atrium?
Yep. And he walks in, and it's full. And then, like, the metro section is there.
And he sits down and they tell... Tara Lowen's question. Tara Lowen's...
And he gets up and he says, I am not going to be interrogated by you people and just walk out. I mean, it was like, which Dalrypa was like, it's your fault. You know?
I mean, so to me, to me, there just seems to be a little disconnect there. It might be because of the times we live in now. But the whole thing that happened in Rio was really hard to decipher, even for Mr.
Jones to say, it's not like we're looking for blame. We're looking for explanations. And it was a long week, a long week to go to Houston.
So the first half was kind of like, really? But then the second half, it seemed like things started rolling, and then all of a sudden you turn around and Javonte Williams is getting the ball. And he didn't have a northern amount of yards, but he got close to 20 carries and the three touchdowns.
I mean, isn't that the way football works? There's a... There was a definite uptick Yes.
In the second half of that game. And then, you know I'd love to know what, if anything, any specific thing brought that about. You know, it's not easy to win in the NFL, and it's just one of those things that luck has a lot to do with it.
Dak was getting some protection. That one pass that he threw over Poirier and Mhmm. And, you know, it's like the city lamb on the on the right side.
It was incredibly spectacular. But there were moments when, you know, you're like thinking 16 to six. They're walking into the locker room, and then they come out, and they score 28 points in the second half and win.
It's like, man, a nice short ride back home. And everybody enjoying victory Monday, which for people who live in Dallas, they understand with victory Monday when it comes to the Cowboys is that everything is curly rosy. People are even polite.
Like, hey, after you. And the air is cleaner and the water tastes crisper and Everybody has a little bit more of a pep in their staff. Totally.
You know? Totally. Sunshine and rainbows.
Like the the real game was kind of like, you know? Like, what was that? Yeah.
But they won. That's what matters. Well, against the Texans.
Yeah. It... It's hard it's hard to win in the NFL.
Oh, totally. Totally. It's like, oh, yeah.
It... Because it's it's a Texas. Hey.
They're of NFL team. Yes. You know, it's not They were next up on the schedule.
So, you win that game. Yes. No matter what, you win that game.
That's the main thing. That's the only thing. Two and two and now it's Thursday short week against a Tampa Bay team that I watched the the game.
Kat Jones has my has has us all with the NFL package. So you can record the game. So there I am scouting the game, you know?
And it was an interesting game, but two teams that just seem to be a bit discombobulated, you know, on on both sides of the ball. Like, there was moments when, you know, love was looking good, but then all of a sudden, what was that? And then the Buccaneers were playing that kid out of Kansas, Daniels, Jaden Daniels, a rookie.
I saw during the game that he's like the first rookie quarterback undrafted to start a game since, like, 1967 or something crazy. So Wow. Yeah.
Totally. It's like you you wonder. Like, there's not anybody out there like Jay Fielder or anybody like that.
They could they could throw in there. So, Baker has been ruled out for this week? Yeah.
Sure. From what I hear, it's like three to six weeks right now. Yeah.
And his thumb, they're working on the swelling swelling, swelling, and you know, he he doesn't have to be operated on, I don't believe. But, but, yeah, they're having to take care of him. So he's gonna be out at least...
They're saying three to six. Without a doubt, the big star for the cowboys last week was C. D.
Lamb. Wow. I mean, he has had games similar to this before, but it just seemed like every time they wanted to go to him or needed to go to him, he was there.
He was open, and he did not let him down. He made the play. If there was a play to be made, CD Lamb made it.
17 catches Yeah. A 189 yards and a touchdown. Yeah.
The key touchdown. Yeah. The only thing missing, and I was really hoping he would get this, would would have been enough yards to get over 200.
That would have been nice. Yeah. Oh.
But, man, it's been eons since a cowboy pass catcher has had a game like that. And, you know, you have two number one receivers because George Pickens would be the number one receiver in any other team. Yeah.
And CeeDee Lamb, I mean, he is undoubtedly the number one receiver, but... And George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb, after CeeDee Lamb scored that touchdown at the end of the game, they were dancing. You could feel this vibe.
I mean, you saw it. Right, Chris? Yeah.
Everybody eats. They're happy. Yep.
Everybody eats. Mhmm. Yeah.
That's something because because George Pickens came here with some baggage. You know? He was known as kind of a little bit of a wacky guy Little bit.
In Pittsburgh, very unpredictable. Didn't Tomlin say that he needed to grow up and Yeah. He Was it like stop playing video games?
It seems like he had some sort of a a little bit of a weird kind of dad type criticism of pickings. Yeah. That I don't think we really hear much.
No. You don't hear anything about him. Yeah.
And it's there there have been other guys come through here in other sports that didn't have a real good reputation like that, and they brought some baggage in here. Mhmm. And as things turned out, they were just fine.
I mean, you deal with them and you wonder, man, what's so bad about this guy? One of the things that Luis Perez who does the color with me for the Cowboys games, we've been working for over twenty years together. How he hasn't killed me, I don't know.
But, you know, he's... I call him the four p. He hasn't killed you because he likes you like everybody else.
Oh, damn right. Because because he puts his hands around my neck and he says, no. I don't wanna go to jail.
So there you go. He stops. That's why your voice gets a little raspy.
Yeah. Totally. Stop.
But what he says is... And it it makes a lot of sense. George Pickens was extremely unhappy in Pittsburgh because they didn't have a quarterback.
Yeah. There was nobody to throw the ball to him. I mean, Pickett?
What's his first name? Kelly Pickett or what? Kenny.
Kenny Pickett. Yeah. Thank you.
You know, I mean, not to not to besmirch the young man but you know, he was not a solution. So he was not high on the picket to pickings. No.
They lost out on a really good dip. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
I couldn't resist that. Don't ever apologize, Shupi. Yeah.
That's why you're a radio hall of famer. That's right. That's right.
Lot of people say that's why I'm an idiot but never really boast. Well, isn't it isn't the doesn't that word savant follow that? Yeah.
Well, there's there's two sides to every coin, Shoopy. There are. There's.
Okay. Keep propping me up like that. I'll do what I can.
But yes, Pickens came here with some baggage and man, you haven't heard a hardly a word out of him, you know? Well, he had the contract thing and then he showed up. He didn't he didn't sit in and he didn't do anything like that.
When it was time to go to training camp, he was there as opposed to you guys remember who and don't need to mention the name. They're talking about. Yeah, exactly.
But but but George Pickens has just been been been cash money. Yeah. Solid.
It seems like he really enjoys it here. Yeah. It's been a really nice change of pace for him, it seems like.
Alright. I just remembered who I was trying to think of. This kind of comparable in that way and that's Kyrie Irving.
Okay. Okay. You know, when Kyrie Irving was making all his other stops around the NBA, he was always in the news.
There was always something going on with him, and he just... He seemed like a big, big problem, you know, everywhere he went. Didn't get along with the coach.
Fans didn't like him. He feuded with some of them. You know, just everything that a guy could get into and get on the wrong side of, he did.
And so he comes here and I'm I'm on the lookout at least for more of the same. Oh, we were all ready. Like, we were on the freak at the time and when that trade came down, we're like, what the heck is Nico doing?
Which we'd asked that question again a little bit later but. Yeah. On that trade, we're thinking, what they're blowing this team up.
In terms of chemistry, in terms of media, just fan relations, everything because Kyrie seemed like he was just gonna be that much trouble. Yeah. He has been a model citizen as far as I know.
Not only has he been a model citizen, in that room, he's the voice of reason. You know? Totally.
That's a hell of a change. We... Yeah.
It is. I mean, when you need somebody to make sense of stuff in that room, go to him. When there was media day, I I went to media day, and when he got on the die, he took the microphone and basically was like, it's good to be back.
I'm glad I can be with the guys now, and I am assuming the role of leader. Not Yeah. Not saying exactly that, but to paraphrase what he was saying is this is this is not my team.
This is Cooper Flag's team, so to speak. Yeah. But I am the guy who's going to take this team and make it what it can be.
Yeah. What it should be. Yeah.
Now will it be? That's the question, you know, because there's a lot of moving parts. Yeah.
There's a lot that goes into it, but still, it just still kinda blows my mind to a certain extent that this guy who we thought was gonna do nothing except come down here and cause all manner of trouble and all manner of ways with all different people. He's been nothing like that. Not at all.
Nothing. In our defense though, he did a lot before he came here. There was a.
Oh, yeah. He did. A lot of baggage potentially with them but again, super awesome so far.
Yeah. I mean, he did do a lot before he came here but he's done just about everything, hasn't he? Wink.
So, yes, the president is set for things like that to come about. And I don't know what got us off onto that tangent. We're talking about pickings?
Oh, yeah. That's right. Yeah.
That's right. We're talking about George. It's good there's young people in the room.
I don't know. Right. It is.
I'm joining y'all soon but for now, I've still got. You still have some. That hamster is still moving very very slowly on the wheel.
Yeah, I don't tell them. We got Brie over here. We'll be okay.
Alright. No. Hey, we learned her.
Nicknames in high school. We're not going to say it because we don't believe it and we don't use that word. But there's the other word that's.
Ally. Yeah. Boss.
We'll go with boss. G rated. Yeah.
Yeah. Bossy Brie. Bossy Brie.
Yeah. Hey, I like to be bossed because You're telling us that. Yeah.
Because then I don't have to be doubting. Yeah. Someone's directing me.
Hey. Right. Here you go.
Okay. Okay. Great.
And then it's their fault if you screw it up. I'm sorry. If things break up, told me to.
Woah. Woah. Woah.
Woah. Woah. Brie told us to do that.
You know what? I'm only as good as my direction and I say that for example, if I'm gonna do like with the Cowboys, I'm one of the voices they use for different spots or whatever. Mhmm.
So Douglas Barraclough, I don't know if you guys He's the best. Yeah. You know him?
He is awesome. And a lot of times, I'm doing, like, a spot for a tequila or I'm doing a spot for for a beer or whatever. And I go and I say, okay.
Who am I now? You know, who am I? What what what are you thinking here?
And, is it, like, the informative guy, or is it the loose guy, or is it... What what is it? And he'll tell me.
And then I'll do I'll do the first one to kinda make sure what the timing is. Like, if it's a thirty, he wants to get it to, like, twenty seven, twenty eight, and I'll do it. And if I flub, I just keep on going because we're timing it.
And then the next one, once I sort of get the rhythm of it, and then there's certain moments when you have to hit it or whatever. And he'll tell me, okay, little more of this, little more of that, and we get it to where he says it's what he wants. Mhmm.
Not what I want. Yeah. Because I'm a...
I'm like a saxophone. You know? Yeah.
Yeah. We played it. I'm you know?
Yeah. Exactly. Exactly.
Tell me what you want. And I'm going to try my hardest to get there to where you say, that's it. And man, everybody wins when that happens because I walk out of there like, that's it.
You know? It's awesome. Alright.
So all this said, the game being played and everybody being very, very pleased with the way things went. Is this team any good? Hell if I know.
It's a big question because, you know, the way football is now, look what happened. Oh. We're we're okay.
There's a false alarm of some sort. Oh, okay. So, Victor, you just keep talking.
Okay. What what was what was I saying? I was I don't remember now.
You're inside scout at the Hilton. Yeah. Where where was I going?
Where where was I? Statler. This is Statler.
It... Hey. Yeah.
Scout at the Statler. Yeah. Yeah.
Oh, I was saying that, you know, in in in the NFL, anything can happen. Now if you look at the Sunday night game where the falcons played at Green Bay, I mean, who expected that? Who expected the falcons who in one game scored three points?
Three, one, two, three, three points. One more point in a safety. Oh, that's a field goal, right?
Anyway, I mean. Point score. Points.
Points, Dan. It's like, you know, and then all of a sudden, they they go to Lambeau Field where people are frothing at the mouth and green and yellow and everything and they got their butts kicked. Bijan Robinson and the other Robinson, they were running all over the place.
So you just never know what's gonna happen. But I did scout the game of the packers playing at Tampa. And, you know, when you have a rookie undrafted at a Kansas that, you know, he's your starter, you know, there were there were moments when he was throwing some nice passes, but there wasn't the consistency necessary to get in the end zone more than twice.
Yeah. Because it was a 17 to 14 game. And there...
What's the name love of it? Jordan Love. Jordan Love.
Thank you. Jordan Love. I mean, he had some moments too, but but the packers are going through some issues as well.
LaFleur is not entirely... He wasn't happy with the result of 17 to 14. You know, you'd score 17.
I'm not saying what... That he said this, but I'm hearing that he may not be on the the steadiest of ground. No.
He's not. You you... When you score 17 points, that's no guarantee you're gonna win.
And I think it's more like Tampa wasn't able to win. Not to say they lost. They were beat.
Yeah. That makes a difference. Yeah.
It does. Yeah. It does make a difference.
Alright. What else stood out about Cowboys this week for you guys? Run the ball.
Run the ball. Because Houston, by the accords of the experts of the Texans, they have become a pass first run second team. Mhmm.
Now you've been around football for a very long time. You've been around football for a very long time. I don't care.
You remember the... Remember the Mouse Davis days? Oh, yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. The run and shoot.
Mhmm. I mean, how long did that last? Football is about running the ball, moving the chains, having the ball, having possession, hitting twice, winning the the coin flip, deferring, having the ball at the end of the first half, getting a field goal scoring, and then getting the ball in the second half and going down and scoring.
That's what football's about. That's right. You take control of the game.
You take control of the game. Exactly. So you gotta run the football.
And Javonte Williams with three touchdowns, you know, in in Rio when they went down the field and they were like at the two yard line and then all of a sudden, they're trying to find a pass to Ryan Flanoi on the left side and then incomplete and all of sudden it's field goal time. It's like, why? Okay.
That was one of the big questions. Why did that happen? Mhmm.
You know, and then later in the game, there was the big question of being overcoached and Dak throwing the ball. Dak was not happy after that game. I'll bet.
He was pissed. I was going to say, I saw, I think it was in the morning news that apparently, Shoddy, they were basically saying that Shoddy used some sort of word or phrase. Word.
Word that I haven't found the answer of it yet. He said, he's, excuse me. Yeah.
He said in his press conference, I said a word to deck which I am not going to repeat to the Yeah. To the present media, if you will. Yeah.
I am not going to say the word, but I overcoached them. And see And he made it sound like... Sorry.
He made it sound like that it basically, like, killed whatever fire deck might have had or it it changed his mindset in a a way that I've never really heard of coach kind of acknowledge. Yeah. And I'm not sure the deck fully acknowledge that that happened.
Yeah. But whatever Shadi said, he clearly learned from it, but it sounds like it really shook Dak pretty good. Well, it caused the the flowchart in his head to all of a sudden have like a black square.
Like, the flowchart, you go, you know, flowcharts are you go here. And if it's this, you go this way. If you do this, you go this way.
And then all of sudden, this way, this way, and then all of sudden, what is in there? I don't know. You know?
Yeah. Yeah. So...
And and I mean, all this is public. I mean, I'm I'm not saying that I think that, no, this is exactly what was said. And to me, for Dak to go out there, for him, there's a word in Spanish called...
It's... The word is and that basically means that you're you're sort of like... And this is no reflection on anything.
I'm just trying to explain the word. It's kinda like the the puppy dog that, you know, you put your hand over their head, and they're like like this. You know, they feel like, uh-oh.
Here it comes. You know, here it comes. Mhmm.
And I'm not saying that Dak was a puppy dog with a hand over his head. No. But there was something in there that wasn't allow...
Him to freely be Dak Prescott. It clearly knocked him off course. And this is something that's been discussed.
I mean, I'm not I'm not making this up. And that right there could be concerning from the standpoint that divisional playoff game, and you got a moment there where all the marbles are on the table and, you know, it's either take them or go home. You know?
I mean, the... Those those are the moments that players play for. You know?
Like, that's what it's that's what it's all about. Yeah. And I I mean, even get into those situations.
Even a guy like Tom Brady. Okay? Tom Brady being Tom Brady and Tommy and all that.
I mean, he had games where he sucked, you know, where he wasn't making... Exactly. He would be the first to tell you.
He would be the first to tell you. Yeah. Where it's like, man, it's just...
I... It's not today, you know? Hey.
Happens to everybody. So, I mean, football really demonstrates the humanity of players. Yeah.
They're humans. The day they have robots, then it's another story. Right?
Do you think we'll ever see that, Mike? No. But your robots.
I hope not. Just maybe like a designated robot where it's just one robot player. If if we do, I hope I'm not around for it.
Because I just love the game of football and baseball and all these sports that we know and the the form that we know them today. I love them all too much. Do you love them all the same or one more than another?
I think I have a guess. I would think so too. Yeah.
Alright. What what are your guesses? You love baseball over all others.
I I have I have listened to you for years as everybody has. And when you speak of baseball, it's almost like you get up on your seat and your voice becomes a little more angelic, if you will. Well, he is baseball Jesus.
Oh. I know. No.
Nobody ever said that about my voice. No. No.
But it just it just seems like it gathers like this. It's kinda like, okay. With the Cowboys, I call plays spectacular plays the way they are.
Like, if the Texans when they had a, like, with the pass to Nico Collins. If you listen to the play by play and you listen to that play, you would probably, maybe, could be, think, is this the is this the Spanish guy of the Texans? Because doesn't sound like it would be like...
No. Spectacular plays take spectacular moments. And it it goes back to what we were talking about.
I don't have anything in my head at that time. There's nothing clogging my brain. Yeah.
It's in blank. You're just in in the moment. I'm just reacting to what's happening.
Yeah. And just letting it live. And and...
But but going back to the change of sort of attitude of Mike Reiner when you start speaking about baseball, there is a little tinge of more when the Cowboys score than when the other team has a spectacular play. You know? Like, when the opposing team of the Cowboys is running back a punt for 75 yards, believe me, I'm getting into it.
It's spectacular. It's about being spectacular. Yeah.
Yeah. I've heard guys not get into something like that when it's going against the team that they're calling the game for, you know. I've heard guys not get into it, and and and that's...
It's just awful. Well, look. Listen.
What the... In my career with the Cowboys, and I think I could say a career because I've been there for twenty five years. I think you can.
Yeah. I think I can. We'll let you.
Yeah. Thank you. The Nadir, if you will, was that Green Bay game.
Because to me, it was like driving, thinking, okay. If the Cowboys... No.
When the Cowboys beat the Packers, then if somebody can knock off the Niners, guess what? The championship game would be at AT And T's... I mean, you allowed yourself to create these castles in the sky.
And then all of a sudden that happened. I mean, Luis and I, at the end of the third quarter, were talking about where we were gonna go drinking that night because we were so depressed. And I think there, it was just kinda like...
And there was there was no excitement. You know? I mean, barren of excitement.
It was one of the biggest sports crashes that we've ever had here in our Fairberg. I think that game was with the packers. I like to say that Nadir because that was like a real low point.
Yes. Like last season, the low point That's a better way to put it. Yeah.
Well, the low point last year was the loss against the cardinals here. Yeah. With Jacoby Brissett.
And come to find out that the cardinals didn't win a single game after that. I mean, what? I think that's how it went down.
Yeah. We used we used to have a thing called the catastrophic moment. Sponsored by ever.
Brought to you by? You know what? We never did get that sponsored.
What never did get that sold. We should've. Damn it.
Ticket sale scene. But we used to have a thing called the catastrophic moment. Okay.
The catastrophic moment in a game or in a season or whatever is where something happens that you just know right then, right there, once and for all, this is not your year. No recovery. Yeah.
There's there's no bouncing back from it. I've been through that. Yeah.
Yeah. I got here I got back here in 2002 after being with the Cowboys in some games in '95, '96 where they went to the playoffs, and, they lost to Carolina when Deion Sanders was on the team. And then 2002, that that year, and then 2003, Bill Parcell shows up.
Mhmm. And it's like... It was, like, completely different.
It was... And and at the time, mister Jones was very focused on giving the team the credibility necessary to build the stadium. Do you remember that at all?
Yeah. I mean... And and who more credibility than Bill Parcells himself?
Yeah. Yeah. He he he brought that that was otherwise lacking at that time.
Yeah. Which brings us around to Shoddy. Yes.
Now he's been in the news a little bit here, and even if he hasn't come out and flat out and said it, which I don't know if he has. He might have already, and I just didn't know about it. But but he's watching him.
He certainly inferred it that, you know, a lot of what's going on in these last couple weeks winds up with him. Mhmm. You know?
Yeah. And it's neat of a coach to be able to do that. Not all of them can.
Not all of them will. But what does that do to you in the room when that happens? Well, I go back to Bill Parcells.
Parcells didn't have to say that. Everybody knew. Yeah.
It was implicit. Yeah. But some guys feel like they do have to say it.
Okay. Is that a new sort of... And I'm not saying this pertaining to Brian Schottenheimer.
I'm saying it pertaining to the era we're in. Sort of that touchy feely thing. Yeah.
Maybe so. You know, it's like like... Excuse me.
Like, Major League Baseball, the all star game. That used to be one of my favorite events of the year. I wouldn't miss it.
But for whatever reason, it's become like everybody hugging, and it's kinda like I remembered Greg Nettles. One time, there was this documentary and, you know, Greg Nettles, I mean, yeah, come on. Who doesn't love Greg Nettles?
Although, that big fight that they had on third base with George Brett, he kicked him. He kicked him. Oh, I'm sure he did.
That's that's why George Brett went bananas. But but but anyway, I mean, Greg Nettles said, the Dodgers are the ones that started with all that hugging crap. Like, hugging crap.
And Yeah. You know, the way he said it is just like, you know, we didn't go around hugging. You know?
Billy Martin didn't go around. Yeah. They didn't.
Well, they they may have, but it wasn't like that sort of like, you know. It was presented as much more of a rivalry among every team. Yeah.
Like between every team, there was some sort of a rivalry. There's some sort of bad blood. It felt like there was always some sort of story line about why we hate whichever team is coming into Yeah.
Our part. And that and that was where the all star game was almost like an eruption of that. Mhmm.
Like, I'm going to throw the ball right by your head because you're crowding the plate. I don't care if it's the all star game. And I'm gonna prove that my league is better than your league because back then, before inter league play and all that, that was the only time they met besides the world series, the two leagues.
Yeah. And I just feel that the all star game has lost that that luster. So the point being Golly.
I'm really impressing myself. You're impressing us too. Yeah.
The point being that there's too much touchy feely going on. You know, it's too friendly? Oh, I love this, and I love that, and, we're gonna do better.
And... Okay. I go back to the same thing, and I'm not comparing anybody to anybody.
But in the in the Bill Parcells time, it was like, he didn't have to say anything like that. You know, he he was just... Like a one time, Luis Perez, once again, the...
My color guy... Well, our color guy. He...
When he came into town, he had been in Phoenix with a Spanish TV station, and they brought him here, and we do with... Can I say the the station? Yeah.
Of course. Telemundo. We've been working with Telemundo forever.
So we have weekly show, monthly specials. We do the preseason games on on Telemundo. So they brought him in and Luis is fact...
Fantastic. He's great talent and good guy too. And the thing is we had him on the field at at at first, and he was doing the preseason up for TV with me.
Mhmm. But we had him on the field, and he loved being on the field because he got to know everybody and he, you know, the whole nine yards. But one time he was there in a press conference after a game where the cowboys snuck out and and he was standing there.
Do you remember the old Texas stadium where the press conference was after? Yeah. You'd go up the tunnel and you go to the left.
Right. And it was like this kinda like subterranean kind of feeling of... In the subway and and where are the tats and where Yeah.
Where's, you know, where where's the graffiti? You know? I mean...
So, anyway, so, there was something going on about about the going for it at any given moment. So, Luis, he's standing there sort of in the middle of the room and he goes, well, coach, did did you think about going for it? And Parcells, like, turn around and he he's telling me this.
You just told me this. Turns around and kind of sneers at him and gives him the, what? And lose the game right there?
Like like, I I think how much more parcels can you get? You know, and at least told me that it was like, it was chilling but I mean, that's a great story. You know?
But but it's That's very Parcells. That's for sure. Okay.
But see, that's that's the thing that Parcells and Dick Vermeil and Marty Schottenheimer in certain way brought to the game. And now it's more like... Okay.
Once again, I'm not talking about any specifically here. Okay? Okay.
Let's just be very clear about But I don't wanna hurt his feelings. Yeah. Because his feelings are really important to his execution.
Can I tell you how I've always heard that put? Well Now it's all about let me coach you. You know?
With Parcells and those other guys, it's it's... You're gonna come here, and I'm gonna coach you, or or we're gonna get rid of you if you won't let me coach you. That's right.
Now it's like, let me coach you. Let me coach you. I can make you better.
If you will do what I say, I can make you a better player, and you might make money. Yeah. You know?
But Parcells wasn't that way with Lawrence Taylor. No. No.
Lawrence Taylor showed up and if he was sleeping to the backroom, he could someone just go wake him up. You know, like Bill Belichick. Well, the good ones know how to pick their spots.
You know? Totally. And Parcells is...
He was a good one, man, in that way. What do you think so? I I loved it while he was here.
Oh, yeah. Oh, he was incredible. He was my favorite.
He's maybe the only coach that I enjoyed listening to and running his press conferences because, you know, the press conference would always take over sometime during the daytime. I did. During the radio day.
Yeah. And I would hate losing content from either bad radio or the hard line or norm or whatever but Parcells, I did not mind getting his press conference because he was so damn entertaining. He he could hold any room that he was in and I think that's maybe where someone like Shoddy at the least isn't there yet.
You know, he's still basically, you know, he's not he's he's still essentially a rookie head coach despite all the experience he's got. But this is the it's something that you learn how to do. Right.
Over time. Yeah. Don't we.
And and we feel is. And Parcells had the gravitas gravitas? Yes.
Thank you. He had that coming in obviously. Like he had twenty years of experience.
He'd had Super Bowls and all that. Like the fact that he was essentially for at least a little bit of time, he made you feel like he was able to kinda tell Jerry to back off and somewhat at least have more of a say than any head coach I can recall in my time as a Cowboys fan. There there is Since Jimmy.
There is a sense that mister Jones did give Bibb Parcells the keys. Yeah. And said Was it you you...
He's the... He's got the groceries. Yeah.
Oh, yes. He gets to buy the groceries. Yeah.
Exactly. I mean, there were there were three... Weren't they three seasons of five and eleven?
Yeah. With Cambo? Yeah.
So it was like, okay. You know, we gotta get the stadium approved, and we need to, you know, get some... This is kind of a harsh word because once again, gotta be a little careful, but get the credibility back.
Of course. Because this is a huge project. Yeah.
You know? And he did bring credibility. He sure did.
And in his press conferences, it always seemed like he to put up off the vibe that he really didn't like doing it, but I think underneath it all, he did. I think he absolutely did. He may not have liked it, but it it was He got it.
It was nowhere near the bumper that he wanted you to make. Yeah. Wanted to make you think it was.
And he was actually and he was funny too a lot of the time. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
A little bit mean sometimes with his humor but he was funny. He was entertaining. Well, the one thing about coach Parcells is that when he when he got a little exasperated, it was very clear because he would go, okay, fellas.
Alright, fellas. You know, he's sort of like moving his chair. Alright, fellas.
And then he'd like lay it out, you know, like, this is not how we're gonna play. Okay? And...
But but, yeah, I didn't miss a single of his press conferences. It was just it was just that you just knew that you were in the room with greatness. Yeah.
Generational greatness. And Wade Phillips, I got to know... I didn't get to know coach Parcells at all, really.
I mean, he knew who I was. He knew what I did. And...
But, you know, I never really had a chat with him or anything. He walked by me several times or whatever. But I did get to know coach Phillips because they had an open locker room where I was I was working full time with the Cowboys.
I'm not... I haven't been full time with them for a long time. But I was able to get into the locker room where they had the coaches all around before any of the media came in.
So I first beelined it straight to Sean Payton. Then I went up to Sean Payton. I said my name, told him what I did.
And Sean Payton, great gentleman. Every time he'd see me, he'd say hello. I had a really good relationship with, Mike Zimmer too because my brother, he played golf with coach Zimmer and his late father, the great coach Zimmer as well.
And my father was very gracious, and he appreciated it. One time I stopped coach. I said, hey.
Do you know George V. Alban? He goes, yeah.
Well, that's my brother. And ever since then, you know, it was like, totally cool. But in that same day, I walked up to coach Phillips and I told him what I did and everything.
Fantastic gentleman. I mean, just really good. But his press conferences were just all the same.
There wasn't any sort of, okay, where's the hot sauce here? You know, need some spice in this, you know? We need to get some get the blood going a little bit.
Yeah. I still I still remember I think it would have been his third season here where I think he'd had enough of people kind of making fun of that in the coat camp marshmallow and all that and he tried coming into his first press conference of the season and kind of like banged on the table like, come on guys. It's football time and all that and just trying to act like he had a little bit more energy and it's just And it wasn't It just wasn't him.
Yeah. Wasn't him. No.
It wasn't him. I mean, he was just not wired that way and and that's not something you can fake. No.
No? No. No.
No. Only a fool would try. Yeah.
Well, you see right through it. Yeah. You know?
It's kinda like when I'm trying to be Billy badass and people are like, Victor, shut up. Sit down. Have your drink.
Yeah. And then they tell you to do that so you do. Soak exactly.
Exactly. Alright. So we've covered the cowboys here.
We've covered a lot of other stuff. Yeah. What else should we...
What else should I think we can take a little bit of a break for just a couple minutes, kinda reconnoit or reset and Alright. Let us do that. Stretch our legs.
And then we will come back here with more. This is three wide at scout. Hello again from the Stadler.
Yay. It is three wide at scout. Scout is inside the Stadler.
It's kind of a hip place, kind of a cool place, kinda where... If you wind up staying here at the Staedtler, you're gonna be looking for the place where all the cool people go. Like you would see Marvin Gaye on a good day here.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
You know? This is What's going on? This is where it's happening at Scout, and that's where we are today with Shupee with Victor.
I'm Mike, and we got a little time left. So let's see. What have we not gotten into here?
Let's see. Are there any other football nuggets that y'all have left on the table yet? Well, I guess.
Is there anything NFL, college that got your goose at gander. Well, I got I I get to watch Sunday football this weekend because the game this Thursday night. Oh, yeah.
Yes. So then Sunday, I get to be sitting around. You get to be one of us.
Exactly. Just and and Kat Jones has me all set up because I can watch any game I want. Nice.
You know? Wow. Was it the Sunday ticket or Redstone or is it everything?
Sunday ticket, baby. Through through what is it? YouTube TV?
I believe so. Yeah. Yeah.
So. Nice. I'm set up.
She's my CIO, by the way. Ah. Yeah.
Chief information officer. Oh, totally. It's like, dad, you need a new phone.
I'm like, really? Oh, yeah. Here's your new phone.
Oh, you got a new phone? Well, I I have an old new phone. How old is Well, I have I had an older old new I I remember that one.
Phone. I remember talking about that one. Oh, yeah.
A couple of my buddies one time, they say, hey. Let me see your phone and they were laughing at me and I said, hey, Kat. The other day, Dalio and TJ were laughing at my phone and said, you need a new phone.
So there you go. Got a new phone. She's How long have been since you've had a new phone shooting?
Well, I literally just got one about a week ago because Oh, you did? Yeah. The one I'd had for about four years just the battery was just going to put.
No. And I could've taken it and gotten a new battery and all that but then I would have had to lose it, not have a phone for a couple days at least and it's a whole thing. So, bite the bullet, get a new phone that'll hopefully last another couple years and it's the same cycle.
Isn't isn't it ridiculous that we cannot leave our house without the phone? Yeah. If you're driving somewhere and you forget your phone, you have to make a decision.
Am I far enough to where, okay, forget about it, or I'm close enough to where you tune and go get it. Or And invariably, it's you turn and go get it. Right.
Or even just Ah. You have your phone on you, but it's not connecting to the Bluetooth or the the CarPlay. And you're like, what am I even doing?
Yeah. No. How is anybody going to get in touch with me?
Totally. A lot could go wrong here. I know.
For that twenty minutes that you're on the road. Oh, man. Everything could happen, Shoopy.
More than we think it is out there. And it usually does. Absolutely, it does.
That sounds like a tremendous adventure. Yes. It's always an adventure with him.
Hey. So you just got a new phone, did you say? No.
No. It's... I got it, like, maybe two, three years ago.
Oh, okay. I mean, mine is... Okay.
I had an iPhone six. That's right. Yes.
I mean, hey. If I could text and I could take calls and take a picture of my grandson, I'm okay. Yeah.
You're not doing a whole lot of tweeting and all that and No. No. You're not TikToking.
No. Are you not on TikTok, Victor? No.
I'm not. I believe El Maximo is, but I don't believe Maximo is. Yeah.
Of course. But, you know, I I don't know. I have I have x, and I do post on x.
Yep. Especially when we tape on Maximo, I post it a little blurb, and there you go. But it's not like, hey.
Look where I'm at or hey. This. And what about this?
And I think this and I think that and... Oh, you're crazy. Well, I will say, out of the three of us, you by far seem to be the happiest and most content.
And I think that has something to do with your level of social media and all that Which is our level of social media. No. I I get it.
I get it. You know, I've been very blessed. Blessed because I live in Coppell for example and I'm completely anonymous up there.
I mean, no one knows who I am. From the standpoint of what we do. Right?
Yeah. But I go down the old cliff, and it's like, cowboys. You know?
So I was like, yeah. I mean, you know, I, like, I would I would go to a store, and I I would be with my nephew or whatever. And he would go like, you know who that is?
And they'd look at me like... And I go,. That's awesome.
Yeah. Totally. One time...
You'll love this story. You'll this story. One time, I was at the the the not the present Ranger Stadium but the one before, the Globe Life.
Yes. Right. No.
Not Globe Life. The old one. Globe Life.
Arlington Stadium or The ballpark. Yeah. The ballpark.
Yes. Yeah. Okay.
Gotcha. Yeah. The Turnpike which I went to Yeah.
The two. Many many times. Yeah.
But but the temple. So we're sitting in the 2nd Level where the broadcast booths are booths are right here, you know, and it's sort of a smaller section. So I've been going to baseball games.
My dad took us when we lived in Bayside, New York. I went to my very first baseball game in 1965, and it was a bad day. And Roger Maris was in right field.
This is at Yankee Stadium? Yankee Stadium. This is old Yankee Stadium senior?
Yes. Wow. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Totally.
So, I mean, to me, there's nothing more exalted in the face of god's great earth as Frank Zappa would say about the muffin where when you go to a baseball game when you go to a baseball game Look at that. I love him. There's there's nothing better than being at a baseball game.
And I don't drink beer. I stopped drinking beer a long time ago. But I'll have a darn beer.
You know, I'll drink a beer and have a hot dog. So, anyway, I'm up there, and I'm yelling and screaming and just being a clown or whatever. You know, whatever.
Even at a baseball game. And then all of a sudden, I did this, and I said, sis, and this this lady that was, you know, contemporary of mine, if you will, maybe a little older, she basically said in Spanish,. She recognized me by my voice that, oh, wait.
That's the Cowboys guy. Yeah. I know who he is.
Like... And I was like, wow. That's pretty cool, you know?
At a baseball game that, that a lady would recognize me and say, yeah. Like like saying, we know who you are. I thought, wow.
I am really blessed. You know? This this is just so cool.
It's pretty neat. Yeah. Anyway, yeah, it is.
It is. It is. And, like, the one time I was leaving a Maverick game, and I'm getting on the elevator.
And one of the gals from the pro shop, she walks up to the elevator because they make you park in the 6th Floor. So... And she comes up and she goes, are you Victor Villalba?
And I said, yeah. She goes, oh my god. And she grabbed her phone and calls her dad and puts me on with his with her dad on FaceTime.
And this gentleman, I'm like, hey, so it's Mavericks, those Cowboys, whatever. And his eyes were like this. And it's kinda like, you know, it's such a blessing to be able to do what I do and then not have the...
I'm just gonna say it like this. Okay? The obligation to say what I think and to read what people think.
I don't I don't have to do that. You know? I don't have to be seeing what people think.
No. And me saying what I think about that. You know?
I don't have to. So I don't. Man, I wish I could live like you.
I don't have anything to say, yet I still feel like I have to say it. Yeah. I I don't have any obligation to do it, but sometimes I I get a a worm crawling through my head, and I I just gotta do something with it.
Yeah. So there's Twitter. Yeah.
Yeah. But... Yeah.
Sometimes you have to throw your stuff out there. But see, in in your guys... Okay.
I'll put it to this way. Like, I've been very fortunate to work in Spanish with two of the most visible, universally visible franchises. And if you throw the rangers work that I have and the PA announcing, hey.
But I work in Spanish. So when I'm working in Spanish, I can be whoever I want. I can be that entertainer.
I can just let loose. I can have a blank mind and let it go and have super professional people like Luis Perez, like Manny Bassana, producer, Ivan Suniga, Chico Maravilla. We love it.
You know, Carlos Nava. You know. I mean, I can do all this and stay within to where when I walk out, there's a line that goes to, hey.
We need your opinion on this and this and that and the other. There's the other line and then there's the other line where I can just kinda like and just kinda walk and walk, get my car, and leave. You know?
So, I mean, I'm so blessed that way. You know? And and, you know, like...
Okay. When Yvonne said to me, I'm working with, with, some folks, Stolen Water, and they have these podcasts, and we were... They were talking about, hey.
Why don't we do a podcast in Spanish? And I was like, wow. That would be great.
And when we sat down and talked to you and and we sort of said... And we we thought, hey. Carlos Nava would be really good, and Carlos is...
I mean, one time there was a rain delay in Pittsburgh, and we had to kill time. We killed a whole hour. Carlos Nava and I, a whole hour just talking about the schedule.
Because it was a Sunday night game. And we're going game by game. I mean, because Carlos Nara has that.
You can throw anything at him and he's going to come back with something. What he doesn't know, he makes up. You know?
Now, that's the trick. Mhmm. They're they When you don't know it, make it up.
Yeah. Just make it sound good. Yeah.
Make it sound Yes. Believable. Yes.
Be convincing. Exactly. So, I mean, you know, I I...
It's it's almost like no one has pinned... Like, my late wife had to give me a cell phone and say, this is your cell phone. Answer it.
When I call you, answer it. Yeah. I've I've had people do that to me all all the time.
Yeah. But I think I see one over there. Yeah.
I'm not the best at it. That's okay. But I'm getting better.
You try. Yeah. I do.
Yeah. I do. I put forth the effort.
You do put forth the effort, Troopy. Alright, what else do we need to get in here, Shuby? Real quick, we need to give some love to Scout.
Yes, go Staller itself. Yes. First off, food here.
There's specials going on. Incredible. Oh, what's special?
Are there specials going on, Becca here? No. No specials.
Well, their chicken tenders are special. I can tell you that. Totally.
The food here is really good. Yeah. Like and I had their wings earlier.
Incredible. Wow. Yes.
A little dry rub on them. And it's It was delicious. This room is great because it's very airy.
It's very open. There's plenty of place to sit. You wanna have a very private conversation or you wanna be in the middle of it.
This place is fantastic. You wanna go bowling? The stately stately stately.
Yeah. That's right. You wanna go bowling?
Yeah. The stately statler. There you go.
There you go. Bowling. Oh.
Like, you can literally hear pins being That's hit right. Throughout our show. It's amazing.
And TVs, man. Oh my gosh. My god.
Really? Shoopy? I don't think I've seen more TVs in one room than here.
Well, there's There's a lot of them. Several. But this is a great place.
And the and the people that work here are fantastic. Big smiles are happy to see you. I mean, that's what it's all about.
You know? Yeah. Being a place where you are welcome.
This is the place. And it is right smack dab in the heart of the Downtown D. Across from Main Street Park.
That's right. And all you downtowners who are checking this out, if you haven't been to Scout, then get on on a stick, man. You you got a really nice place here.
Yeah. A really nice place that Right in your backyard. To see you there.
Right? Right in your backyard. Mhmm.
I mean, you're a downtowner. I was a downtowner too. I know what it's about.
So come on, man. You need to get with the program here. Where did you live when you...
I'm sorry. Where would you... Where did you live when you were downtown?
Oh, right down the street here down in the Wilson Building. Oh, okay. Yeah.
I'm sorry. You were saying? No, I was going to say if somehow the scout set up for atmosphere isn't quite your thing.
There's still other options here at the Statler. Oh, really? They have a rooftop pool.
Nice. Which probably feels really good right now, actually. Yeah.
I I... They've... Knowing them, they probably have a little bit of ability to heat it up too if you need.
Of course, they do. But then there's also Have you taken a dip in it yet? I just might after the show.
You want to join me? I don't believe that. I don't see.
You'll see. Oh. Alright.
I like that. But in in there's also a Speakeasy here. Bourbon and banter.
And then there's also a restaurant Overeezy. Feel like breakfast and lunch. Oh, nice.
Yeah. You can get all your food food items here. And when you come in here to Scout, now is this all the time or just for this?
This is all the time? Oh, there's a special I was talking about. Oh, okay.
Yeah. Okay. Just for this.
Use the code word football. Football. The password is football.
Football. Pretty simple. Just like they used to sell that show password.
Oh, wow. Start the game, and the guy would come on and say the password. London football...
Luden? What was the name of the host? Alan Luden.
Alan Luden. The great Alan Luden. He was married to Betty White?
No. He was married to somebody. Or would have been Betty White.
Yeah. Might have been. Yeah.
Password. The password is. That's right.
The password is football. Football. Yeah.
So, we hear that. About that password, you will get a free drink, man. Or free valet.
If you're coming here for three wide. Yeah. Free valet.
Hey. That's when you wanna use the code word football. Football.
You come see us at five... I'd say 05:30 till about seven, 07:30. In Spanish, it's football.
That's right. That's true. Football Americano.
I can't do what he does. That's probably for the best. Alright.
Do we have any more cowboy stuff we need to touch on or any kind of more press conference talk want to get into or anything? I really did enjoy that. Yeah.
I did too. So. So, I do feel like you know, we kind of talked about why all the other coaches had their pluses and minuses.
I think we were kind of needing still get around and wrap a bow on what y'all think about Shoddy and his press conferences, his presence seems like maybe either he's kind of coddling his guys or is he shielding them maybe more than anything? Like, I know y'all were talking about how, you know, now it's kind of let me coach you, but do you think some of Shadi's personality is also... He's never gonna throw a player under the bus.
He's always gonna throw himself under the bus first, and that's where the line is. As much finger pointing as there's ever been in my experience was the time, and I don't think he was actually finger pointing. But when Dak after the Giants game said, hey.
We had the ball twice in the second half when we scored both times. Yeah. And that's what he said.
Yeah. And that's kinda like saying, you guys gotta give me the ball. And just the sense of that getting to that, not necessarily finger pointing, but saying that in a press conference where you've just lost, you're very frustrated, you didn't expect to lose, you expected to to be more competitive, it's it's almost like you gotta be careful what you say.
Yeah. You know? And that's just not necessarily the world that we live in when it comes to competitive sports and when it comes to such a violent sport.
Yeah. And I guess that's where Here's where I am with Shawnee. Number one, I really like the guy.
Oh, yes. I mean, he seems like he's a legitimately great guy. Mhmm.
Seems like he cares about his players like anybody in his orbit that needs to be cared about. Seems like Shadi cares about him. Mhmm.
He's just wired that way. Mhmm. And I really like that about him.
It seems like he'd be a really, really great hang if you were Oh, yeah. In his inner circle. Okay.
But now that said, I also understand why he got the job. And he got the job because Jerry is never going to hire a strong head coach again. That's just the way it is.
He's going to hire somebody who needs the job and can do the job the way he wants it done. The way he wants it done is to follow your marching orders, and your marching orders come from him. And I guess that was gonna be my question is how do you see all that translated into how he addresses and works with the locker room?
Like, is he... Do you think there's a chance that he's completely different behind closed doors with the guys after a game? Or do you think he's more or less press conference shotty with the locker room?
I don't think he's got a whole another side to it. Okay. He just doesn't seem that way.
Like doctor Jekyll, mister Hyde's. Yeah. Yeah.
I I don't think he's got that. I think what we see is pretty much the way he is and probably he's that way more than any cowboys coach we've seen in recent years except for Jimmy. Right.
I mean, Jimmy was the way he was with everybody all the time. Mhmm. Yeah.
It seems to me that if Brian Schottenheimer or coach Schottenheimer is walking around the building when he walks by somebody, how you doing? Hey. Good to see you.
You know? Kinda like Mike McCarthy was that way. I remember doing fist pound with coach McCarthy.
Was he really? Yeah. Yeah.
You'd run into him in the building and he'd be like, how you doing? You know? And I'm not...
You you know, you'd be surprised how much people know and that they see you on the plane, and they they... There's a familiarity with you. Mhmm.
You know? But, you know, he just seems very genuine. You know, genuine guy.
Yeah. But see, I go back to Parcells not because I'm comparing, but it's just... It's a cutthroat business out there.
It's eat or be eaten. Yeah. It's a dogfight.
For just about every player except for someone like Dak, it's a week to week proposition. But what Bill Parcells used to say was, you are what your record says you are, and winning cures everything. Because if the Cowboys...
Okay. Albeit, they lost to the Giants. Brian Schottenheimer said, we were humbled.
Okay. Wow. If they they they beat the commanders, if they win in Rio and they have this victory against the Texans, we wouldn't really be talking about the way Shadi talks to the press and this and that and the other.
We'd be saying, wow. Well, so far so good. Yeah.
But the situation in Rio was so perplexing to everybody that it's kinda like, I didn't go to Rio. They didn't take the... They didn't take Bradsham's broadcast.
They didn't take the other cowboys broadcast, Compass, and they didn't take the Spanish broadcast. That must have been a really long flight back. You know?
And and it's it's kinda like winning cures everything. And you don't have warts on toads when you're winning. The toad is nice and smooth.
Yeah. It's just beautiful. It's swimming.
Look at it. Wow. I like when it opens its mouth.
Yeah. You know, when you're losing, damn dog. Get away from me.
I mean, I didn't kick him. I just sort of shoot him. Okay?
Yeah. Because nowadays, you know, hey. You never know.
So You pushed him with your foot. There might there might be a there might be a toad association of America that takes offense to that. You know?
I promise you it's out there. They're at the front door of the statue right now. That's right.
They're watching you. They're here for you, Victor. They're taking you to call your wife.
You're not coming home tonight. That's funny. But, yeah, you know, winning win...
Winning carries everything. Yeah. It does.
And, you know, like I say, I like him. He seems like he'd he'd be a really cool hang, you know, kinda like he's a good guy. I think he cares about everybody in his orbit.
He's one one of those people who is like that. But, you know, he he wasn't a big name when when he got the job, and I I I just don't hold out much hope for guys like that who come into that position to last very long. And how much respect do you think he has in the locker room then?
Well, I I would hope he would have respect just because he respects them. You know? Generally, when it comes to respect, if you give it, you get it.
Right. And I think he does give them respect. And I hope they give it back to him.
I could be wrong about that. Yeah. I guess my worry is that it's, you know, maybe kind of a substitute teacher kind of situation where you know that he's only gonna be here for a few years like, okay, we'll listen to what he says and blah blah blah and then he'll be gone.
We'll bring in some other, you know, great personality hire and cycle continues or do we maybe see him lasting here for ten years because he hopefully just keeps growing with, you know, his ability to be a head coach and To win. The man of the locker room and his ability to win. To me, the George...
Excuse me. To me, the George Pickens situation shows you that things are good inside the locker room. Yeah.
But there's no malcontent right now. You look at a guy like Quinn Williams. You look at a guy like Clark.
You look at these guys, and they're all, like, these passionate, ready to go guys. And they're not toeing the line. They're not obeying.
They are a team together. And I I would think that, like, if if if George Pickens was, like, doing what Terrell always said when he got all hissy about Jason Wittens getting all the footballs, and I'm not getting any and, you know, divided the locker room and all that. Oh, yeah.
I mean, you know, nobody has time for that. Right? Nobody.
So the fact that that they may have time for it, but it hadn't happened yet. Correct. Correct.
Then... And to me to me, that's a good sign from the standpoint that that you just just go out there and win. You gotta win.
Yep. If you do that, everything will take care of itself. Oh my goodness.
Yes. But to make that... To bring that about and to make that happen, you gotta win a game like that, the one against the Ravens.
You gotta win a game like that. It slipped away? Yeah.
It did. It did. And that can't happen.
The way it ended is almost Keystone. You know? It's like, okay.
Brandon, do me a favor. Let's kick it out of the end zone. That way, we don't have any chance to kick it out of bounds.
Okay? If you kick it out of bounds, it goes to the 40. If you kick it out of the end zone, guess what?
It goes to the 35. You know, it's like, okay. And then the way it went down to where Zay Flowers and and and then time out, time out, and there's a second left on the clock.
I mean, were doing the game from AT And T Stadium. Yeah. On...
You know, on the big screen and whatever, and we're getting us the sound. And, I mean, that it was electric out there. And Yes.
I don't call the field goals because we, Luis and I, we we just sort of fell into this thing where he calls the extra points and the field goals. So he he told me once, okay. So we're in the Super Bowl, and the guy was about to kick a field goal to win the Super Bowl.
Who's calling it? And I'm like, you're calling it. Yeah.
You know? I mean, that's the way it is. So I knew for a fact because I'm from the school of when the play by play is going on, you keep your mouth shut.
I don't wanna hear a peep out of you. Right. Yes.
Shoopy. You know, like like high school games when you hear the guys going nuts, and I think I'd be... That's fine.
But that's that's not the way I like to operate. So, anyway, so Luis calls the field goal, and I just knew he was gonna make it. I just knew.
I just had this feeling that he's gonna make it, and he makes it. And Luis is just going bananas because that is the spectacle we live for. Whether you win or lose, that's what the NFL wants.
That was one of... Albeit with all the picadillos that we've been talking about. That was a pretty darn entertaining game.
Like, the NFL must have said, alright. Yeah. That's why we have these international games.
Right. You know? Just don't go to Australia, you know, the day before the game.
I feel like they're still apologizing for that. I watched that game, and I was like, man, the Rams don't have anything. You know?
So... And then there's gonna be a game in Mexico City, which is the Niners and the Vikings. Nice.
And then there's gonna be a game in France. The the Rams and the Commanders played up in London. Is is this too much?
There is a line. Yeah. Like, I mean, the the the the conversation of there being a team overseas, that's never gonna happen.
For exam... I mean, the the time zones of London and US, you're making trades and things are happening and there's deadlines and it's 02:00 in the morning when it's whatever time you... I I just don't see that.
The only way it happens is if the NFL is able to get all these other countries on board to do things according to US time. Yeah. But I I just...
My opinion... My humble opinion, if there's just too much too much logistics that can just go awry. Yeah.
And and you may be right. Yeah. I'm I'm not saying that that I'm right about that.
This is this is just a reaction that I had listening to you talk. Yeah. But I I think if they could ever get wherever they put the team to go along with everything being done on US time, then then maybe.
Maybe Canada. But not Mexico. I mean, they can have games in Mexico, and and, you know, things don't operate the way they do here in The United States.
Canada maybe seems like it. Yeah. Canada would be probably closest to it.
But it wouldn't be a Canadian team. No. It would be an NFL team in Canada with every part of the infrastructure that exist with every single of 32 teams up there.
Yeah. And I don't know how they would be toward... You know, that that would kinda be an act of stead trying to step out Canadian football, and and I don't know how that would be greeted up there or if the NFL would would, you know, really want to do that.
You know? Yeah. That's a good point.
But I I I just... Okay. When the World Cup was over, did you guys watch the World Cup?
Were you into it? Yeah. Okay.
Yeah. Everybody was. So when the World Cup was over and Gianni Infantino came up with this idea sort of out of the blue where we're gonna privatize it, we're gonna make a bunch of money, and this and that.
And Wafa, who is the confederation of European team... Countries, said, no. You're not.
No. You're not. Because this is not about making money.
This is about soccer as an institution. You don't privatize something as fundamentally important to society as as football is in Europe. Yeah.
You don't privatize it. So boom. Backfielders.
No. No. That's that's going on.
Now I don't think anyone's gonna rebel against the idea of continuing to have these these international games. But quickly, I would say that the fact that the field in Rio was a concern is part of the idea that it's not that someone is going to get hurt on a field. It's that the quality of play is not the same on a field that's, quote, suspect.
Mhmm. Yeah. Well, what have we accomplished here today?
A lot, I think. I feel pretty good about it. I was gonna say it's more than I usually do in a night.
I feel like I'm gonna walk out of here, and I can't really put my finger on it, but the world has changed out there. Oh. Oh, wow.
Yeah. That sounds very oh, man. George Orwellesque.
Well, Shupee, you know what I think it might be? You weren't on social media for the last hour and a half. Oh, boy.
That's true. We we got to live like Victor for Yes. We did.
A little bit. And you know what? I don't know if I should.
I feel really good about things. We got to live that victory. Yeah.
Now, we're about to go back into hell. Yep, we are. Because that's the way we roll.
So, we just can't get away from this thing. Alright. That is it for three wide at Scout today.
