The John Wick series showcases a man who wants to leave the business of being an assassin, but certain events would not let them. In the same vein, whether it is musicians or pro wrestlers, no matter the reason there are circumstances that lead people back the profession that they wanted to leave behind. Even Jack Ryan has to face this with the latest installment of his adventures in Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War.
Andrew Berstein (The Outsider) directs here with a cast from the Prime Video Series that includes John Krasinski, Sienna Miller (new here), Wendell Pierce, and Michael Kelly. The film takes place after the television series fourth season ends with Ryan (Krasinski) having left the CIA to lead the life of a civilian. CIA Deputy Director James Greer (Pierce) reaches out to Jack to work on another project that he insists is not a mission, and when Jack reluctantly takes him up, it of course leads him back into spy work where he is not sure who to trust or even where to trust them.
The majority of this film takes place in London and Dubai and really shows them off well. If the purpose here was to make people interested in visiting those locales, it definitely succeeds there. The cast does a fine job, and having some of my favorites like Krasinski and Gabriel helps a lot.
At about an hour and forty-five minutes, there is some good action sequences along with a story whose twists and turns is about what can be expected. Unfortunately, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War doesn’t really have the same type of presentation that the films did (Patriot Games specifically). To be fair, I admit that I have not seen the series, so that may have had something to do with my expectations. To me, this is just another spy film that I have seen many times before. I did not love it, but I also did not hate it, so I recommend seeing it on Prime Video from home if you have an Amazon account already.
