The Weather… and Everything Else That Comes With It | Jesse Hawilia | Ep 208
Weather doesn’t just “happen”… and neither does a career in television.
On this episode of Your Dark Companion, Mike Rhyner, Grubes, and the crew welcome back WFAA meteorologist Jesse Hawila for a conversation that somehow covers weather science, sports, music, and the weird path to finding your lane.
Jesse breaks down what it’s really like to forecast North Texas weather, including the infamous “cap” phenomenon, why meteorologists are constantly checking data (even on vacation), and how predicting the unpredictable becomes part of your DNA.
But this episode doesn’t stay in the clouds…
The conversation drifts into:
The Texas Rangers’ early season momentum and first impressions
Thoughts on the Final Four and college basketball’s changing appeal
The reality of working in local TV and building a personality on air
Jesse’s deep love of metal music, concerts, and band culture
And somehow… monarch butterflies, hydration, and random on-air chaos
It’s funny, it’s unpredictable, and it’s exactly what happens when you put curious people in a room and let the conversation go wherever it wants.
If you like weather, media, music, or just great conversations that go off the rails, this one delivers.

Nobody would have thought that I would be the one.
Ryder?
Sports talk?
Baseball, baseball, baseball, baseball, baseball, baseball.
Oh, it's a big mic.
Oh, OK.
All right, yeah.
OK, now I get it.
We're going to lightning strike, boys.
What happened over there, Grego?
We had a little lightning.
Probably got outside the window.
All right, all right.
Here's a tip for all these Americana league teams.
Don't do it.
You said tip.
Yeah, tip.
The peak.
Keep jamming.
To take a colon.
Nothing but a big Gen X jerk off, say.
This is a little lighter while somebody would hear that.
Bullshit.
I'm back.
You can't be serious.
You can't just happen like that.
It can't.
All right, I want to touch on some sports things.
Would you mind, Jesse?
I'm excited.
Let's do it.
Hi, Jesse.
OK.
First of all, Ranger season is underway.
And on the whole, I'd say that's a very nice series up there
in the city or brotherly shove for the boys.
They got off to a really nice start there.
It gets a team that when we last saw them,
they were losing to the Dodgers and the playoffs.
Like everybody that the Dodgers ran across did.
And they figured it'd be really good again this year.
And the Rangers went up there and took two out of three from them.
They didn't win.
They were beaten by the National League Si Young runner-up last year.
So very little disgrace.
Saw some things we kind of like about this thing.
Saw some things that give us pause.
The bullpen once again.
As always.
That's what happens when you run the same guys back.
But I mean, they're the little Rangers you can't have everything.
But on the whole, the rest of it was pretty good.
And I think I found out who my favorite Ranger this year will be already.
And that is Brandon Nemo.
Now, I must say, I didn't think that much of it when the deal was made.
I thought the Rangers got back a player who is usable.
And in the process of doing that, they got rid of one who apparently has
very little use at least around here anyway.
But I didn't think much about the get back.
I thought more about what was leaving than the get back.
But the get back is pretty good.
This is what the guy is going to be.
That's pretty good.
Seems to be an energy guy for sure.
Yeah, he's a big energy guy.
He's a lead off hitter.
I talked to a couple of met's people about the time the deal was made.
And these two don't know each other.
I don't think.
Mr. and Mrs. Met.
No, not Mr. and Mrs. Met.
John is definitely met.
I'm sure.
Yeah, John is definitely met.
I don't think these guys know each other, but they told me the same thing in so many words.
And that was you're going to really like this guy.
And can see it so far.
It's pretty good.
We happy.
Yes, we happy.
Good start for the Rangers.
Now, where else was that going on sports?
I don't know.
Shopee.
You told me you had topics.
Yeah.
Well, I can't think where I went.
We'll get back to it.
Fine.
Because we were, uh,
anything.
What else?
How about the, uh, that upset?
Yeah.
See, I know sports.
I saw that.
You do.
We know you know sports.
Do you know you con?
Yes.
Yeah, I didn't pay too much attention to the final four for some reason.
College basketball just doesn't do it for me the way it once did.
And I don't know why I'm sure it's a great game still.
But it used to be something like Duke and North Carolina or, you know, a matchup like that.
I was a major, major stop down in regular season, the tournament, whatever.
It was a major stop down for me.
And now, uh, okay.
Maybe I'll watch it.
Maybe I won't.
And this time I opted the, uh, opted not to.
But okay, we got the final four now.
So let's roll.
The fun's going to start.
The fun begins now.
It does.
And YDC begins now too.
Hi, everybody.
We have today with us for the fifth time.
Six.
He says fifth.
Six counting your old YDC.
Yeah.
Okay, six counting the old YDC.
We're patting it.
Which we're doing now.
We're patting stats.
We are patting stats.
He can't let Sarah Blaskovitch beat him.
That's right.
That's right.
Where's the camera?
You're never going to beat me.
I think she currently is.
Yeah, she's got it.
She's got a jacket and you don't.
That's all right.
We have control of these things.
We can put the game in your favor.
All right.
Good.
Good.
This is, of course, the great Jesse Hewielum.
Weatherman extraordinaire of WFAA TV.
Weather.
Thank you for having me.
Well, thank you for doing it, man.
It's always so much fun to have you on here.
I love seeing everybody.
It's an honor to be here.
I say it all the time.
And I mean it.
Yes.
I mean it.
I know.
You know, a lot of people say it.
They don't.
I can always tell.
You do.
Yeah.
Some people think they're better than other people.
Hello.
They do.
Like that guy, right?
He wasn't here last time.
No.
Yeah.
Maybe that's him.
He thinks he's better than me.
So in my book, you have one less appearance than you currently do.
He's always got something negative to say this guy.
It's all right.
He's like that.
He's yeast.
Yeah.
WFA seems to be a pretty good port of call for YDC guests.
We had one of your other cohorts.
Oh, yeah.
In here.
The great Matt Howerton.
We had no idea how great he was.
Boy, we really did.
I love how he.
I think he's just the greatest.
He is.
He's got such great energy.
He's funny.
He's got to tell him all the time.
I was like, I need half of it.
He's an awesome dude.
I would see him on TV.
I would think, okay, that guy is really good.
He is a really, really good newsman.
Yes.
And next thing you know, they've taken him and they put him on daybreak.
Yeah.
Wow.
That's big time.
It is big time.
Does he big time you?
What's that?
Does he big time you?
Oh, yeah.
I'm daybreak now.
You're just a weather boy.
Yeah, that's exactly what it is.
He's Monday Friday daybreak.
You're just the weekend weather guy.
I don't know who you are.
He forgot my name.
Call me Justin.
That's fine.
That's fine.
I know where I am.
I'm in the shadow of Pete Delker.
That's a big shadow.
It is big shadow.
Big shadow.
That's all right.
We love you anyway.
I appreciate it.
You're a guy.
But yeah, man, I was just not expecting anything like that.
It was like, he was a wild man.
We just take charge of things and take it anywhere he wanted to take it.
I mean, I don't mind bad at all, but I was just not expecting it from him.
You know, like you see him on TV and he's very professional.
He is.
He is very squared away and everything.
And you just don't imagine guys like that having that kind of persona in them somewhere.
This is why I think truly, and I'm not even just plugging things here.
That's why I think he is so perfect at the job he has because he's an incredible professional at a news guy.
Being the news guy.
Being the news anchor.
And he's got that morning energy that you need when you wake up in the morning.
He's got, he's funny.
It's perfect.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And we also found out that these days, taps for him comes at 6.30 at night.
Oh, yeah.
That's the only reason that we had to stop the show.
Yeah.
We had to get out of here.
We hit his bed top.
That's a, that's the, we were talking about the news starts when the news starts.
Yeah.
Yeah.
There's no, I'll do it in five minutes.
It doesn't, doesn't work that way.
No.
So you got to get to bed.
You got to get your sleep.
That's, I mean, that's early.
That's early.
I've had to do some morning show fill in work before and it's, you got to get to bed at a very interesting hour.
Yeah.
I think he said, yeah, 6.30 is his bedtime and his wake up is 145.
That what he said?
Yeah.
That's gross.
It's, man, that's a lot.
That just turns your whole world upside down.
It is interesting.
The world really need to start any time before about 10 a.m.
You're asking me?
Yeah.
How about high noon?
That's, that's more like it.
That's why he's with Hall of Famer.
That's exactly why he's a Hall of Famer.
He's a thought leader.
That's exactly right.
That's right.
I'm a progressive.
Yeah.
At least in some areas of life.
Yeah.
And so.
So how you been, man?
You've been good?
Been good?
High graded?
What do you think of my water bottle?
Man, that was, that is most serious.
I was going to ask if that represents how much rain we're going to get in the next week.
Yeah.
That's exactly what I said.
Is that your water bottle?
Yeah.
You want to bring that over here?
Can you do that?
I want to want to see this.
Wow.
He is big time in here.
What do you think of this?
I feel embarrassed.
Did I tell you that?
This isn't right.
I feel radical.
So right before here, I was like, man, I really want a bottle of water.
I was like, I'm going to stop and hanging out with my family.
So I went to trade or show.
And this was the only size they had available.
And I asked the cashier, do you have a reasonable size bottle of water?
She said, that's all we got.
So.
Okay.
There you go.
That's that.
I don't like drinking it.
I feel very weird drinking out of it for so many years.
Your duty is to drink that whole bottle of water before the show ends.
I'll do it.
I'll be safe.
There's one health thing I do well.
It's high rate.
I drink a ton of water a day.
Well, this show goes 20 more minutes.
Oh, good.
Just kidding.
We're going an hour.
I can do this.
I want to see Chuck that thing at some point when you realize you're up against the clock.
Just make sure the camera's not on me when I take it.
No, we're doing a full tight shot.
All right.
Yeah.
I really like carrying this around.
How have you guys been?
Everything good?
Oh, yeah.
We're just in here doing this thing.
Let's see.
This is on the, is this the 30th of March?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Wow.
March is almost over.
This is episode which?
208.
208.
Pretty good.
All right.
It's pretty good.
We're turning them out, man.
We don't only have 203 episodes without you.
That's exactly right.
Don't forget it.
I want to make sure you remember that.
I can't.
You don't need 203.
We don't want to forget it.
That's right.
I mean, you're too important to us.
Well, to you.
I appreciate that.
Yes.
To most, to most not really.
To most not really.
So let me ask you.
I was thinking about you today.
The way you must go about your business.
Of weather.
And getting all together and stuff.
Yeah.
Do you at your house?
Have a situation where you can come up.
Pretty much with the weather forecast that you're going to deliver that night before you
even leave.
Yeah.
You know, for the weather guys, we're always looking.
There's new data that comes in all the time.
And we look at it all the time.
So at home before I leave for work, I'm already looking at new data to see when's the next
chance of rain.
What's it looking like now?
Get a good idea before I start putting the graphics together to tell everybody what to expect.
So I always have a rough idea of what's going on.
Even when I'm on vacation, it's one of those.
Being a meteorologist, you're kind of born with that.
Like nerdism.
Yeah.
You always think about it.
You're always wondering what's happening.
You can't just shut it off.
It's like you love sports.
Yes.
You do it because you love it.
And you're going to whether you're working or not, you're watching sports.
That's right.
You're curious about sports.
You think about it.
Yeah.
Same thing with us.
I could have cut myself off totally when I walked away from the gig years ago.
But I didn't.
I mean, it's just too much a part of the fabric of my being.
It's been that way all my life.
And I saw very quickly.
I can't quit now.
It's like an addiction.
Yeah.
It is.
Yeah.
It is.
That's all there is to it.
But I mean, you have all the gear to just, I mean, do you just get it online?
Or do you have anything special or?
Yeah.
We look at the weather data online.
There's these sites that host all these different weather models that we look at.
The European model.
Oh.
Oh, yes.
You know what I mean?
The American model.
Oh.
There's the Australian model.
Brazilian model.
There's a Brazilian model.
It's a group's favorite.
You believe in that one, don't you?
I believe in the BBL weather.
So we go through all that and see.
Get an idea of what we're, what we should expect for the week, week two weeks, really.
Now we can look farther ahead in the world.
Yeah.
Do you have your own weather balloon?
You know what?
How do those work?
Well, like a balloon.
Pretty simple.
Fair enough.
Yeah, I know.
Like if it pops, does that mean it's humid or something?
No, yeah.
You know, here's an interesting thing.
Those, they, when they pop, they're about the size of a small SUV.
They're huge.
They're huge.
Yeah, they go like, they go like 70, 80, 90,000 feet in the air.
And they pop.
Collect all sorts of weather data.
Extremely important for what we do.
How is that data collected?
I, I just know that weather balloons are a thing.
And every now and then someone will ask, like, you or Pete, like, have you launched a weather balloon today?
Yeah, and sometimes you're like, no, we haven't.
It's important.
It gives us a snapshot of the atmosphere.
Okay.
So they release these balloons twice a day all across the country.
They have little instruments on them that measure temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction with height.
And as the balloon's going up, thousands and thousands of feet, it's transmitting the data back.
And that lets us see things like the cap, which is a notorious thing here in North Texas.
And all of that data gets plugged into the weather models, which we then use to forecast the weather.
Okay.
Is the cap the thing that's affecting the weather around here these days?
People, yeah, the cap is such a...
Here's the thing with the cap.
People think it's...
And I want to make sure this...
Head down with Ty Boy.
Here's the thing with the cap.
Here's the deal we love.
So people think it's an excuse to, you know, all the storms didn't happen.
It's an excuse.
I get why they feel that way.
But a lot of times in these really volatile environments, when you can, you have a chance for severe weather,
there's a cap in place.
And I tell people to think of it like you have a pot of boiling water on the stove,
it's in a pressure cooker, and the lid is on.
And if you were to...
Bless you.
Bless you, Ashley.
And if you were to boil that water, build that pressure, which the atmosphere does in the spring,
but that lid is on, you don't get an explosion of thunderstorms.
But if the lid even just slightly moves in some way to loosen,
it's an explosion of energy, and you get big thunderstorms.
So that's the thing with the cap.
You can go from monster supercells producing tornadoes in baseball-sized hail or nothing.
There's no in the middle.
And I think people think, well, you said these big thunderstorms and we got nothing.
It didn't even rain.
It's like that's actually kind of the case with the cap.
Just a layer of warm air loft, that's all it is.
I miss big thunderstorms, though.
Yeah.
I love big weather.
Springtime.
It's that time.
It's happening.
Yeah.
I do have a rain gauge.
That would be fun if he's like, oh crap, I didn't think to get one.
I have a humongous rain gauge.
Yeah, you do.
Yeah.
And I collect also, yeah.
People fear your rain gauge.
They're afraid of my rain gauge.
Yeah.
This will be gone by the time this is over.
That's my idol.
It better be.
I told you, that's our goal for you.
We want to make sure you're hydrated and let a little go in the car.
When they pick you up.
Oh, man.
Really quite something.
Yeah, we get ready for the storm chase trip that I take every year.
Are you going?
Who's going?
Who wants to come with me?
You down?
Yes.
What is it?
So we start April 17th.
That's when we begin.
And we kick off.
Everyone flies in.
We're going to start with a concert.
And I'm very excited about that.
And then we'll just hit the road.
If there's storms, if there are no storms, we'll have to find something else to do.
Electric callboy.
It's a German metal electronic band.
They're fun.
They're very fun.
Is this around here?
Yeah, I think it's at the, I don't think it's at the bomb faction.
Maybe Southside Ballroom.
I can't remember exactly what we bought tickets.
It's sold out.
It's their North American tour.
We're the first stop.
Are you familiar with Buck in there?
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
No, I would have to, I'd love to go see him.
Incredible guitarist.
Incredible.
It's very thrown by the entire city.
Yeah, he's so good.
He's amazing.
June 12th.
I'm saying.
I think the same night electric callboy is here.
Sorry to turn this into music.
That's okay.
Yeah, we talk about everything.
It's all right.
It's, I do believe the same night here in Dallas is Steve Vi, Joe Satriani, and the guitars
from animals as leaders.
I'm trying to give his name Tobin.
Tobin's something.
Mate, some of the best guitars in the world.
Yeah.
And I don't think we'll be able to see Steve Vi, Joe Satriani.
I'm on.
Toast on a bossy.
Toast in.
That's it.
He's the lead guitarist for animals as leaders, which is like an instrumental metal band.
Oh, that should be quite a show.
Where's that going to be?
Where's that going to be?
Shoot me.
I don't know.
I was just looking at the guitar player.
Oh, I'm sorry.
But if I think they're in Austin on, I think they're in Austin, the 18th.
Oh, music called a fair park.
Nice.
That would be if you love guitar work.
I mean, my gosh, I don't know how you get better than Vi, Satriani, and Toaston.
That would be physical education, right?
Yes.
Yeah.
It's.
Um, those guys carried their own bands around with them and everything, just like all the rest, right?
Yeah.
So all three of them are mainly just instrumental.
Yeah.
They just they don't really have vocals.
It's so good.
Now, animals as leaders does, just like Satriani and Vi, crazy time signatures, incredibly technical
stuff.
Those three together, I imagine, would play something.
I got to see Satriani and Steve Vi and Yenvay Malamstein and Zach Wilde and Kansas City years ago.
Oh, hell yeah.
That was sweet.
Hand.
Yeah.
You guys, let's go.
Let's go to this one.
Of course.
Yeah, I do that.
Cool.
How'd you get into music like that?
I actually remember the first time that this is a weird way to remember it, but it started
with AFI back in when I was 11 years old, or 11 or 12.
We were on the way to Kentucky to go see my grandpa.
We were driving and I had a walkman.
Remember those?
Oh, yeah.
You remember walkmans?
Better world.
A little blue piece of crap that skipped every two seconds.
And I played the album, The Art of Drowning, which is still one of my favorite albums of all
time.
And that was my like, man, I'm investigating and all of this, then I just started getting
deeper into it.
I just sent you into it, huh?
Yeah.
That's punk.
Yeah.
That's, this album is amazing.
So how would I know?
Yeah.
What the hell?
I'm sorry.
No, you're good.
You just got really dark in here.
The weather made it not warm or so cloud-covered.
Oh.
And it still sees some sun out there.
Yeah, there's sun out there.
See, it's not easy, is it?
No, it's not.
See?
It's not.
I got to fix it a couple of things.
No, keep talking.
Okay.
That was it.
That was my, and then I just, then I got into all squirts of random music after that.
And then I just became exhausted.
That's awesome.
Yeah.
Now, before you discovered this, what were you into?
Just 90s country, whatever mom and dad listened to.
80s and 90s country, I would say, would be what I was into at that time.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
George and Garth, Reba.
I guess so.
I mean, even older.
Willie Nelson, Conway, Twitty.
Johnny Cash.
The Ottomans.
The Ottomans.
Why not?
Little country, little rock and roll.
Yeah.
I am.
I'm a fan of the country of that era, too.
It's great.
Yeah.
Really good storytelling.
Yes.
It's wonderful.
Yeah.
It's really good storytelling.
It's a great genre of music.
It is.
But we need to go to that concert.
Let's go.
Okay.
Unfortunately, come to a lecture call, boy, have your eardrum blown out.
And then maybe, I think they were playing in Austin the day after.
So it'd be a good show to go see.
That's no kid.
Good hang.
What's party?
Yeah.
Let's do it.
Let's do it.
Oh, yeah.
Let's do it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Make a whole weekend out of that weekend.
And I assume you're excited for the Mario movie, too?
Sure.
Wow.
Okay.
I know a lot of people who are.
I'll be fine.
I'm one of those people.
Very excited for that.
You ever get Pete to go to one of the shows that you like with you?
No.
He's.
Pete's into a country like.
Yeah, I don't think he would.
I don't think he would join me.
I could try.
Yeah.
What about Matt?
Matt's a medal.
You know, Matt's a medal.
Is he?
He loves Metallica.
He's a big Metallica fan.
Yeah.
He would come.
Oh, God.
Pantera, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, to get pumped up for us.
And I'd say it worked.
Yeah.
My gosh.
Maybe that's the secret.
Yeah.
Pantera and energy drinks.
Man, that'll do it.
Like, that'll get you feeling things.
Yeah.
Just yesterday, and I can't think of the song, but just yesterday,
I came across Metallica covering a song that was well, well beyond anything I thought they
would ever touch.
And it was great.
Do you remember what it was?
No.
For the life of me.
Did you try to share it?
No.
No.
I did.
I did.
I find some of my favorite performances of all time are covers from bands, like when
have you seen the Kennedy Center where Ann Wilson covers stairway to heaven when they were
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
That's like the one of the most incredible live performances I've ever seen.
It gives me goosebumps every time I see it.
Yeah.
I kind of love her.
Amazing.
I think she's coming near.
Yeah.
I think I saw something about that like a couple of days ago that they were on the way
here.
What?
It was the last year we saw.
Did we?
Yeah.
Unfortunately.
She had trouble walking.
Oh.
Yeah.
Man.
She.
She can't do what she wants to.
See, that's the thing about concerts for me.
I mean, I go to now to see guys.
I'm always going to see when they come just out of loyalty more than anything else.
Sure.
And I find myself disappointed because they can't do what they once did.
Yeah.
And that hits me in a funny place.
You know, I'm glad you brought this up because now I don't feel so weird.
So I don't want to mention the band's name because it is maybe my favorite band of all
time.
Put them down in anyway.
But I recently saw them and I've seen them for years and years and years.
And I watched them.
They're young.
They're still young dudes.
But as I was watching this performance, they've gotten bigger over the years.
And I watched it.
I was for the first time disappointed because it started to feel like a job for them.
I watched them and I was like, I can tell it's, this is what we do for a living now.
Here's the music.
Adios.
Yes.
We're going to play it for you and we're going to play it as well as we possibly can.
But if we cut a corner here and there, well, it's just where it goes and when it's over,
you will love us.
Yeah.
You will say goodbye.
You will go on your way and we will all carry on.
Yeah.
It was heartbreaking.
Truly.
I know that sounds dramatic.
No, it's tough when you see somebody like that, you know?
Where they're kind of playing the same sets every night.
You feel like the same jokes and audience banter.
Like it's time the exact same.
Yeah.
Every spot.
That's not fun.
It lost its authenticity.
It's grit.
Because I had followed these guys forever through small bar venues in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa
and Nebraska.
I mean, everywhere.
They were here in Dallas not that long ago.
In the United States, you just started running right with eyes.
I did.
I guess.
Well, it's because I lived in Indiana that's in Illinois, Iowa.
It's a whole thing.
You're right.
I didn't think about that.
What is it?
J.K.
Kentucky.
Yeah.
Name all the states.
Yeah.
I could.
I know.
I know.
Something like that.
That's why she's back.
But it's.
Yeah.
Like they were.
It was you.
You'd watch it.
I mean, this is the greatest thing ever.
And then last time I was like, oh, man, I can tell this is like, like, is that dramatic
of a difference from the previous time you saw that being.
This is going to sound dumb to some people, but they were so polished and tight.
It just felt.
It just different.
Yeah.
It didn't have the same live just intensity.
Let me ask you this.
Yeah.
Will you go see them again?
Oh, yeah.
Okay.
Oh, yeah.
That's how they get you.
Maybe it was a fluke.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
Oh, I know.
This time will be great.
I know what you mean, because like these days, when I go to a show, the vast majority
of the time, I'll leave disappointed on some level, because whoever I'm seeing just
can't do it the way they used to do it.
And I walk out wondering, walk, walk out thinking, okay, and that's, that's it.
I'm not going to come see this again.
And by the time I've gotten to my car, I've rethought that.
Okay, you know, maybe in the next year or year after that, when he comes back around,
we'll see.
That's, you know, it's back on the table again.
Yep.
I know that feeling.
See, I'm glad you feel this way, because I tried to explain that to a couple of buddies
and my wife.
And I'm like, yeah, they were awesome.
Like they were great.
That's the thing.
They were too good.
Just weird.
Yeah.
I don't know that.
Yeah.
I mean, when you see them, when they've got full fast ball, then that's what you expect.
Yeah.
Yeah.
You might want a little bit of grit.
You want a little bit of mistakes or not even mistakes, but just it's real.
It's different.
Yeah.
Different.
Rather than like listening to the album with people, like it could have been like the
Chuck E. Cheese mascots on stage, like, I mean, that would be a great show doing this
with the album playing.
Yeah.
That was my favorite band back in the day.
The Chuck E. Cheese, the rock-a-fire explosion.
Did you ever have a birthday at Chuck E. Cheese?
Hell yeah.
Me too.
I remember it.
Really?
Really?
What?
Jared from Bowling for Soup?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Oh, crap.
Yeah.
Well, Jared was like the voice of Chuck E. Cheese for forever.
No way.
But Eric, our friend Eric, he handled pretty much all the other music or the map, the Muppets
and...
What?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Damn right.
Petty theft.
That's such a great name.
Who came up with that?
Him.
No, I didn't.
Oh.
He's only.
I didn't.
There's irony there, I think.
A guy that was actually in the band for a while, when a very old friend of mine when I first
pitched it to him.
The idea of doing a...
I'm thinking about doing a Tom Petty cover band.
Would you like to do it?
He went....
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, you call it Petty Tha?
He's such a good name.
There's like boom okay with it. Yeah, here's one thing we got out of the way. Here you go. There's the name wins the next show
I
Who's the drummer? I want to fill in one day what can I fill in and drop one one song one day?
CSU be I'd love that
I'm not the most perfect drummer and I don't get to practice anymore, but I wonder I think I could go through at least one song
How about April 9th at private event? Oh private? Yes
I haven't heard of that venue
Coming up April 9th
That is the next one, but I'm but I'm saying Bartonville store dance overleave tollbirds
Barley house. Yeah, you will take your pick and then just bring some drumsticks and just
Kick the drummer out
Yeah, like it's Jesse drew. It's Jesse time one song true. I miss playing in bands. I really really do I
Do that sounds like you're fishing for a offer somebody please start a band with me
Yeah, people would probably love to start a bad with you. That'd be fun
I was in an indie rock band through high school break dance not hearts
Break dance not hearts. We used to play like little venues all around India Indiana's
We had a little Rihanna cover that we made that made it on the radio in Indianapolis
It was disturbia
Break dance not hard, so that's pretty good. That's great name
All right, we have the great Jesse hewila with us here. He is the WFA TV
weather ace
And we'll have a little bit more with Jesse coming up here in just a bit because once we get going with Jesse
The riffs just come pouring out
Right now, though, it is time to stop down for the dreaded and feared mid show read
Drink some water Jesse. All right. What do we have here?
Do we have the house of healing?
Okay, chug chug chug chug
All right, let me tell you about the CBD house of healing if you were roaming through this world in pain
There's something you can do about it. You don't it doesn't have to be this way. There's something you can do about it
The reason I know this is because I was roaming through this world in pain not too terribly long ago and
I went to the CBD house of healing and told them what was going on
They looked at me and I looked at them and they said
Try this
They gave me this the full spectrum of sad stick to put on it
So okay, I followed them in instructs went home put it on there
And the next thing I knew I was feeling a whole lot better really fast
So you're probably thinking okay, well, that's you
They do that for you
They won't do it for me
But they will do it for you. You see
The CBD house of healing is run by a registered nurse. She approaches this from a very very medicinal standpoint
she's all about the medicine of it and
She has understood and has has has come to grips with how all this works and
She will find something there that is going to help you feel better now
You're not to believe me what y'all to do though is go by there and check it out if you're in pain
You owe it to yourself to do that not to mention everybody around you who you're probably making miserable
There's no reason for that get out of pain go see the CBD house of healing. They are located
At Plano Road and Northwest Highway in the Northeast quadrant of that burgeoning intersection
Stop by tell him you heard about it from us here on your dark companion and start your healing at the CBD house of healing
Now
Now one other thing I need to tell you about this is a little

Is that it? That's fantastic. All right Jesse just about killed his water boy. He really did God. I told you
I've said it to the one health thing I got going for me is I drink tons of water
Let's just keep in mind our toilets are all broken in this house
Really no good flush one just dumping that. Yeah, we got a big backyard though, and it's well-picked
Yeah, good. Yeah, my dogs have used it before I'll go out there. I'm not about it
Hey, I've used it to
Me too. It's your property joking. I'm not joking. I'm not joking
joking
Totally joking
right into the bird feeder
All right, where were we with Jesse?
I don't know man
Every time he comes in here
There's just so much stuff to talk to him about so much. I want to get to with him
Let's see we've done bands. We've done concerts. We've done weather
Weather yes
Fallen behind chupie. I know I was trying to find topics. Yeah
Get on the stick over there. Shupie. Okay
Shupie got a new washer and dryer. Thank you. Congratulations. Right there. That's chupie. Yeah, I did I did all in one
stacked to
Side by side. Nice. Okay. Yes, it's exciting. Uh-huh. Yes, they work well
They work well, which are better would well this year
There's a difference uh
between top load and side load
Like or front load, I guess that
But not just the stack, but apparently that just the the quality can be different
Okay, so he's got a big top loader. Yeah, these are
Big industrial strength sizes. Okay. It's like Jesse who wheeled a water bottle because I messed up a lot of shit up in here, man
Got a lot of shirts to wash yeah
No one asked for this story, but go for it, but speaking of washers mom god rest for soul. I'm not saying anything
Remember that I remember she's no longer alive. I know. Okay
She was a big believer in the like the old-fashioned
Do you know I'm talking about the
No, like the non-energy efficient
The ones that turn and like tear or close into the crazy agitators those. Yeah
The high yes, I get I get it the hot energy efficient ones aren't like the greatest. No
And that's all I got for you. Okay. I just wanted to see if he was gonna make fun of
Oh, yeah, she's that old
What a beating
Wow, I haven't seen one of those since I was a kid
Really wow
Did they ever have to wash their clothes in the creek
Okay
Really
Okay, but just not your part of taro
They have to have to wash their clothes in the toilet
Told it
So it's a fair question you never know
Yeah, it's you do never just asking questions. I mean, if you got to do laundry then you will stop it no links to get it done right
Yeah, you can't really argue with that logic
When some people have a broken washer they send it home with other people
Oh, that does not surprise me at all that he sent clothes home with you Becca
Can you wash my my blankies?
I have never asked her to do that sometimes
She's taking it upon herself to do it, but I have never would never but you didn't stop her
Um, no
I respected would the offer is made look
Becca's gonna do what she wants to do
You we know it's not smart to get in her way
Yeah, that's right
I push over she'll just she'll just throw you aside. Yeah, she will run over you. Yes
That's fair. All right, Jesse. What is the craziest thing that ever happened to you
When you were playing your craft in another market
Uh actually
No actually it was attacked live on air once what by lion
My lion
It was crazy keep going
Oh, are we ad libbing out? Yeah, he tore me up. That's actually true. I uh
Oh, yeah, no, no
It's so many interesting things that I could share with you
Um, no, I read I read it was a small market in my first job in Lafayette, Indiana
Real pretty university. Yes, market one or nine market something real small. Yeah
There you go
And uh, how do you know that?
Oh really today we could have been co-workers. Yes, what
Probably probably better choice
But I was because I had to do news too
I would do weather and then every so often I would shoot and edit and do live shots on hard news
And I was reporting on a story and some guy did not want me
In the neighborhood and while
It's funny small markets. You think back how silly it was
But I was getting ready to do my live shot. They were double boxed to me
Standing there young Jesse with his microphone and this guy comes up and shoves me out of the live shot
And he like started he started pushing me and then they went back to the anchor and he he wasn't like quick on his feet
His and I remember that I wish I would have saved it
But this was back when it wasn't like it wasn't easily accessible. I watched it and he was like
Uh
We uh
As you can see we're having some technical difficulties
Technical
Yeah
It was he was passing I remember that cop's gotten involved it was uh
There you get that was the craziest thing I remember
What prompted that I don't know he just didn't want to send his neighborhood
Oh, that was it. He just didn't want us to be there. I don't remember what the story was about
He just did not want us
We were on the sidewalk doing a live shot from his neighborhood. He just didn't want us there
So it wasn't a weather related
No, okay, this is what it was. Yeah, okay. I had to report on hard news. Oh, man
Was he y'all on that chin don't you know get off my lawn and all that
Saying we were vulture get out of here and
He pushed me. That was crazy
Cops got involved you think you knew who you were thinking to see you on TV and Lafayette Indian no
Well, you did some you know the small market news is funny um
It's important. I'm not making fun of it
But there were times where we would like we would go out in the middle of an extremely rural area because like a barn had caught fire five hours earlier
And you know like a small like old abandoned barn you do a live shot there
That's obviously, you know, those really small markets obviously deserve and
Oh, geez. Oh, yeah
Oh, no
No, it was just like a firework is caught a barn on fire or something like that. No, do it
But you got to go through that to get to where you wind up. Yeah. No, it is true
Now much different ballgame in a huge market like Dallas. Yeah, you know, there's lots of
Lots of crazy news. Yeah, and
No, no, we we just get to focus on the weather
You got an agent. Nope. No agent just me
Please
What kind of deals can we get going?
CBD house of healing. Well, there we go. Come on. You threw it down
Come on
You'll be hearing from my agent
Yeah, Becca needs to do more. She she told us. Yeah, she's not busy enough
So what was your path?
So I worked in so I actually my last semester of college I worked in
Lafayette, Indiana and I traveled which this was so none. I'll never do something like this again
But you know, you get your foot in the door. I traveled two hours one way
To get to my job that paid very very little
All of that people would be shocked at how little you make in really small markets
Well, 13 in our 13 in hour. How's making less than that in my first show?
Yeah, no, not even
So I would go to school full time drive two hours do the full shift get off at 11.30 p.m
Drive back do my school drive two hours drive two hours
So four hours of driving that that was so dumb
But I just wanted to get my foot in the door look at you now. That's what you do look at me now
I would yeah, that was a lot and then I I worked there and then I went to Fort Wayne
Then I went to Kansas City then here I am
10 years
You are oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, I was a puppy dog. I would do anything for anybody
At any hour day or night
Yeah
What's what wisdom did you gain from that? I'm curious. Well, how how do you feel about that now?
Yeah, yeah
Um now I feel pretty stupid about it, but
If I had to go back and do it all over again
knowing
How it was going to work out I'd do it all over again, or even if I didn't know that I'd do it all over again
That's true. That's what I wanted to do, you know, that's a I understand that feeling that's I wanted
I wanted to take a shot at it and see if
If I could possibly make my way through it because I loved radio, you know
Now did you have any success in the radio industry?
Marginal
Marginal did you do anything worth noting at all? Just marginal and did still trying to make a name for themselves
I don't I'd I'd say probably not now. You'll get your big break soon. You'll do it soon. Don't worry. It's okay
I think I'll get it through this
People will know your name one day
They will know your name one day 10 inch headlong. That's right
They told John Hainley that too
He was pinning out pin pals with John Hainley. Really? Yeah, that's right. I was
Wonder if people what what what would that entail exactly?
Give any letters later on. I can't remember how this started
But
I think it was in Rolling Rolling Stone did this must have been Rolling Stone because this is all I read back then
I was kind of a stoner too
And Rolling Stone did a story on John Hainley and they said that he was in St. Elizabeth's
Hospital
in somewhere in the
Baltimore, Washington DC somewhere like that
And I thought you know, I want to write a letter to him and just see what happens
and
So I did
And I sent it and didn't think anything more about it, you know
I said it all didn't think anything more about it and probably
Four to six weeks later
Something came back to me with the return address of St. Elizabeth's Hospital on it
I thought the hell is this
and I
Opened it and there was a letter from John Hainley who had wrote who had written me back
and
I don't know. I just asked him really generic silly questions
About how things were up there in St. Elizabeth and do you remember
Do you remember KZW the zoo in Dallas, which was the radio station I worked at then
Although they they not only did they not put me up to this they didn't even know I was doing it. I didn't tell anybody. I was doing it
And he said wrote yes, I remember the zoo back then and talked about how
He used to get high and go out by white rock lake and listen to it and or listen to something that that made him feel very strange
and yeah, it's
And I
Wish I had the letter still, but I don't
Yeah, I have a copy but the station manager of KZW at that time took it from me. Oh, I never gave it back. Yeah
Why would he do that because he's a prick
What's his name
His name is Jay Hoker. Oh, yeah, he took it he took it from me and he never gave it back, but
Before he did or before he could get around to doing that. I did have the forward thinkingness to
Make a copy of it
Good and I got a I got a copy of that letter of John Hingley in his own penmanship
Around here somewhere. I don't know where but it's around here somewhere
Wow
So that's my story of
My brush brush with craziness
Will you take it you took a shot and it worked yeah, I did did got some content out of it. That's right even 40 years later
Oh, yeah, yeah, it's
It's certainly well over the years
Is it is it would probably probably fall under the heading of an off-told story now
Well, I am curious for someone that's had the career that you've had is there because you asked me am I my craziest moment
You know, that's my career is
But 15 years old, but for you
What was it is there something that stands out in your mind is like you think about it all the time or
Change the way you think if they change your life
Oh
You must have a huge selection to choose for yeah, I do I do I just got attacked on a street
I mean you've had Cuban sitting here Matt Howard's in yeah
I just you know what that list has to be impossible to choose from
Oh, well, yeah, it's put me in contact with some pretty cool people for sure, you know
But
probably the
Thing that would top it off was just the way that
The ticket started yeah, and then how from out of nowhere
That came at a time when
Nobody thought that anything like that would work
Here in Dallas for some reason
I never could figure out why but whenever I would talk to somebody about
What do you think about sports radio here? They just go
No, you couldn't do that here in Dallas. Yeah people said that they did they did I guess hindsight just 2020 big
Really yeah, they did they did
I it's crazy to think about it because at that time
It was in virtually. I mean not every big market, but virtually every big market sure
I mean I used to go on vacation
And all I wanted to do was drive around driving my then-wife and young daughter crazy drive around
And listen to the sports talk radio, you know
that they had
And I heard nothing on there that I didn't think you couldn't do here, you know
I heard nothing on there to make me think that it wouldn't work here
And I figured if I've started talking to people about it see what they think
Somebody would jump on board, but no, I mean even
Even guys who later in a few weeks would in fact join me in this venture
When I first brought it up to them they just went no
You couldn't do that here
Yeah, why why can't you do it here because at the least you had the cowboys Jerry had been owner for about five years at that point
So you knew that he was crazy. There's at least stories from that
Yeah, but they said that they said because you because of WBAP
And because of krld and because of cliff
Nothing like that would ever work here because they already had sports hours. Yeah
Essentially, yeah, and I thought well, okay, that's
but I'm sure in other markets
You know situations like that exist and it seems to be working okay there. It's at least staying on the air
So why couldn't you do it here?
but
Yeah, that's
That's probably it for me. They're just the the whole process of the startup of the thing
This has
Without giving secrets away has some relevance someone asked your question to to my life right now
So you believed in something deeply
Yeah, other people said
No, that's not gonna that's not gonna cut it
But you believed in it so much you kept going for it you still went forward anyway despite people saying that's ridiculous
Yeah, and look what happened. Yeah, I think that's a valuable lesson
They sound corny to some people. I really think that's a huge lesson. I think it's a huge lesson
Yeah, you just got to dig in man
Dig in and don't let anybody tell you you can't
Until you see that you can't yeah until somebody throws up that
That insurmountable obstacle in the middle of the road for you just keep on trucking
Keep pushing keep going for it. That's what we did
And look at it now, okay, it's still there still there
It is
Jesse do you have a great idea that you're percolating
That people are telling you was crazy
Yeah seem like you're contemplating
I think hearing that was actually very cool. I do I have some ideas. I would love to try but I think I get in my own way
I in terms of I doubt myself. I think uh, what if it doesn't work
What if it rather than actually just trying something? Yeah, at least find out if it fails or not
Yeah, but then it always comes back. It's one of it's a couple of the things I think about I I've never had it like
Be so loud in my mind for so long usually. I'll have an idea anywhere. That's stupid
Um, but yeah, okay. Well, I got going on this and I just couldn't stop, you know, yeah
I mean it reached a point where it was it kept me up at night
And then I found two guys that
That wanted to do it so
And I talked to those guys who joined up with me
They thought I was crazy
They said uh
I was just pitching it to them and
There's just starting to say okay. Well, how are you going to do this? How are you going to do that?
Who's this? What's that and everything and I finally says well look do you want to do it or not? It was like oh, oh yeah
Yeah, I mean, I'm definitely in
Uh, again now I feel like Mike's my therapist so I'm going to ask you the question
So do you feel like so you had this you you felt it in your soul clearly
You just got to get you just got to get started. Yeah, you really just got to start somewhere
Yeah, and then you'll once you get the wheels going once you start getting a little momentum
You try to build on that and you keep trying to build on that until
Somebody throws up that thing in the middle of the road that you just can't get around and that never happened
So you kept just saying it out loud to people until somebody said oh
The I know the person like the right person heard you say it and said I know somebody who wants to do this with you
Well
Kind of it is it really it's a crazy story. It just all fell together
Between three guys who really didn't know each other all that well and
And somehow made it work
But this is not about me. This is about
No, I
Anytime night or day sit down here and talking that camera about well, I can't miss Ashley's here
But if she's here and can get me on the air and sit here and talk about this stuff all day long
We only have Jesse in here for right now. Well, I was using you. I'm sorry
You can you can use him. I just I actually thought that was great great advice
I find as I I've actually said this on TV before I have found the older I get
I think back to things my mom or my dad would say that I always brushed off as like
whatever
Okay, do you sure and then I'll be like damn it
She's right now. I see it. Yeah damn it. He's right
It really sucks when you find out how right they are about most things doesn't it?
It does
And if you were to listen sooner
Maybe things would be a little bit different in some way that you might like a little better but
At a really sucks when you find out how right they were and how stupid you were
That's the worst it's great for the mothers
There's got to be nothing sweeter than an I told you so without actually saying I told you so but you know they know
Yeah, the look yes, the look the knowing nod
The knowing nod of a told you
Well, man, there's been a blast as always you were wonderful, dude. Thank you for it
You're my favorite and you're all my favorite. I appreciate you so wait
I have to ask I have to ask about the the small dog advisory. Oh, there's a small dog advisory
Said a new way back back has got something for you. Yes, might be a feature that you can steal. Oh, please
Because I'm just wondering why I
I mean
It's a real rivalry around here the red river
But somehow some way they have this super cool
What it's a small dog advisory graphic. Oh
Wow, where does this come from? This is so cool
My sister's in a remote gloma city
That's really
I'm gonna steal this. Okay. Yeah, please do please do
We've seen the trash can advisories. Have you seen those like tie down your trash cans and
Anytime there's a chance of wind that's it's really that's my sister sent me this because this little dog looks like my mom's a dog
Um, but then I was like what we don't have this
The only thing close to that I've given wind advisory. I think this is very effective. I've given a two-pay and wig warning
I've never given a dog
But so I've got I've gone the hair piece route
Which offended a couple of people now, but yeah, you know dolphins. Where's a hair piece? I know you guys know that
Uh, but uh, I like this small dog
I mean because everybody loves their small dogs and so they're not gonna hate you for warning them that he might fly away
That's she that's true. I'll do it. Yeah next time there's a wind advisory watch out for that
I always knew we wore a hair piece. I'm telling you had to be
I said it the cuff links her fake the Rolex's fake the hair pieces. It's just a hair piece
It's it's all of a side people
I also saw your uh monarch butterfly videos. Oh, can I can I know that about monarchs do we have time or no you know no go ahead
We got all day something near and dear to my heart our monarch butterflies and
Quick story when I first started at wfa. I mentioned that to the general manager
There's the news director at the time. She's now our general manager Carol Carol and mongo
And they sent out those letters welcome you know welcome Jesse
He's from this and he likes this and one of my biggest passions forever has been monarch butterflies state insective Texas
And she put that at the end of it and I always think back to the email because it was he's like he also
Is really interested in monarchs?
Interesting
I was like
It was it was interesting and I was like oh, but um
Yeah, so the monarchs are now on their migration north from mexico. They overwinter every there's such interesting creatures
They migrate from mexico every single spring they go north through
The plains they go out into the east coast the west
They lay their eggs on milkweed plants the caterpillars eat the milkweed which is a
Is something that they've
They've they've done as a a mechanism to avoid predators
And this starts about this time every year. Yeah, so you'll start seeing if you if you watch you'll start seeing monarch butterflies
And they're always going north this time of the year if you watch them during the day. They're going one direction
It's north
And they lay their their eggs on milkweed which I highly suggest everybody plants
Away station for monarchs
Milkweed
Texas, Lantana
Mist flower so they have a place to lay their eggs and and get something to eat if you will
Uh, I know it's dorky. I hear you over there last group. I love topics
But and then in the the fall they start flying back south they go to the same
They're offspring go to the same places, which is so fascinating in mexico
And they they bunch on the trees in the millions and they stay there for the winter
And a few years ago was the second lowest number on record of monarchs
They made a little bit of a recovery last year
So I'm hoping we can just get more people. So if you're watching
Get some native milkweed put it in a little garden area watch for the caterpillars
It's a fun I get to do that with my daughter now, which I'm super excited about yeah
She'll be in she'll be in kindergarten this year, which is mind-blowing to me
But now we I get to share that excitement with her and watching the egg
Hatch become a butterfly eventually and letting them go. It's fantastic. It's adorable
What a door Mike's got a great
A bunch of perennials that are B and butterfly friendly sweet
Including Lantana. He does have a lot of Lantana pollinators love it
They do
So there you go. Yeah, but she's the queen of garden. So
