Just Wondering...with Norm Hitzges

Is Brian Schottenheimer Too Nice? | Just Wondering with Norm Hitzges

January 12, 2026 12:26

Is being likable enough to lead an NFL team?
In this episode of Just Wondering, Norm Hitzges takes a thoughtful look at Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer and asks a question many fans are quietly wondering: can a “Mr. Nice Guy” succeed long-term in the NFL? Norm breaks down coaching styles from Tom Landry to Bill Belichick, and introduces the idea of the “thundering velvet hand” — leadership that blends discipline with care — while questioning whether Schottenheimer strikes the balance players need to win.
Then the focus shifts to the Dallas Mavericks, where injuries to Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving force a hard reset. Norm lays out a blunt plan: forget the playoffs, invest in young players, and start building for the future. From developing Ryan Nemhard and Brandon Williams to eyeing draft position and long-term roster construction around Cooper Flagg, Norm explains why patience now could pay off later — even if it’s not the plan fans hoped for.
It’s a candid, realistic look at leadership, culture, and decision-making in Dallas sports — the kind of thinking that doesn’t chase headlines, but might just point the way forward.

Today is Monday, January 12th, and I'm just wondering if cowboy coach Brian
Shottonheimer might be too nice and what's the new Maverick's plan.

I must tell you, I like Brian Shottonheimer. I've never had a one-on-one interview with him,
but from everything I see and hear, he truly seems something special, someone really likeable.
But might he be too likable? He came here wanting to establish a new culture. Now a lot of
coaches say that. A lot of coaches try that and so far we don't know quite honestly if Shottonheimer's
pulled that off, establishing a new culture. This year was pretty disappointing. But he's so encouraging
smiling. You never hear him call out a player in public. Well, unless it was that slight call
out of Trayvon digs and digs relationship with the franchise had begun to sourge for Shottonheimer
here. He's truly Mr. Nice Guy. But is that the quality, the necessity of a head coach?
Coach Shotton seems to be like everybody's best buddy. Now I could be very wrong here. I honestly
mean this. I could be very wrong about this. Behind closed doors, he might be a whip cracker.
But what does he seem that way to you? Now successful coaches come with all sorts of personalities.
You don't have to be stoic like Tom Landry or a dictator like Bill Belicek or a somewhat
psycho good cop bad cop like Jimmy Johnson or even coach Shottonheimer's father Marty.
I'm telling you this, when I saw the Marty Shottonheimer stare on television, it scared me.
Now all these coaches were different. But all it seems to me were at least a little bit feared.
But all of them loved their players. And I think their players knew that.
But don't players have to have at least a little fear of their head coach?
Do you get a feeling that coach Shottonheimer might strike any fear in the Cowboys locker room or
on the sidelines? Listen, I love the music of Dan Fogelberg. He is one of my all-time favorite singers.
And one of my very favorite songs of his was Leader of the Band. It was a tribute to his father.
And in it, he describes his father as a disciplinarian as having a thundering velvet hand.
What a fantastic picture. What a fantastic description. Thundering in that yes, he gave out a little
fear and velvet in that you knew he loved you. Again, I could be totally off base here with Brian
Shottonheimer. I think I'd love having Shottie as a friend. I'd love him as a next door neighbor.
But I'm just not certain. That's the best approach to long-term success as an NFL head coach.
Next, so now, what's the next new Mavericks plan?
What do you want from your favorite restaurant? Fantastic personal service. A cheery,
welcoming, spotless atmosphere. And of course, great food. The primest of beef,
wagoo and lamb. Incredibly fresh seafood, lobster, salmon, shrimp,
hall of fame food from a hall of fame restaurant. Two locations of Bob's steak and chappos.
The original Bob's on Lemon Avenue. And the gorgeous new Bob's at Craig Ranch McKinney.
My wife marries the co-creator of full moon-healing bomb. And I guess I'm the reason this terrific
cream was developed. A few years ago, I began getting these huge, ugly blood blotches just beneath
the skin of my arms and hands. The conditions called senile propora. And no, you don't have to be
senile to experience this embarrassment. It happens as you age. And then to cover it up,
we begin wearing long sleeves, even when it's hot. It took two years working with a New Jersey
lab to refine the all natural ingredients of full moon-healing. Gently massage a very small amount
into the skin. And within a day, the blotches begin to fade. Senile propora usually takes
weeks to disappear. But this bomb cuts the timeline to about a week and ordering so easy.

Well, Anthony Davis has heard again. I know this doesn't surprise a lot of you.
Ligament damage in his left hand might need surgery. Out weeks and weeks may be the season.
That ruins whatever plans the Mavericks had to trade him. And by the way,
there appeared to be an emerging possibility of dealing Davis to Atlanta before the injury.
But now, I think Dallas has to refocus totally on next year.
Don't hurry, Kyrie Irving or Anthony Davis back from injury this year?
Spend the rest of the year investing minutes in young players like the guards Ryan
Nemhard and Brandon Williams. Forget making the playoffs. Yes, I know. You heard me say that.
Forget making the playoffs. You're going nowhere. And I hate to use the phrase tanking.
But in this case, tank. Right now, you've got the seventh or eighth pick in what looks like a
very rich NBA draft. So here's the plane. Next year, your starting lineup is a healthy Kyrie Irving.
Max Christie at the off guard, Cooper Flag and healthy AD Anthony Davis at forward,
and either Daniel Gafford or the now injured Derek Lively at center. Your bench?
Oh, it's sound. It's one of those two alternating centers.
At forward, you got PJ Washington and Naji Marshall. At guard, you've got Nemhard, Williams,
Clay Thompson. And you got that number one pick. Now, that's a solid team. And if that solid team
rolls in the season is doing well, you go with it. But if not, and you have an opportunity to trade,
go for it. Trade Davis or Irving or Gafford or Marshall or Thompson or PJ Washington,
though I need to get a lot for him. So the complete team you'd build around would be Flag,
the first round pick, Lively, Christie, those two kid guards, Nemhard and Williams, and maybe PJ
Washington. Plus, whatever else you can get in a trade, it's not the plan you wanted. I know,
it's not the plan you wanted. But the presence of Flag gives you a chance to go forward with people
like Lively and Christie and the number one draft choice around him. It gives you the start,
the start for a future because there appears to be no presence right now.
