Cowboys: Outcoached, Out-Muscled by the Giants, Why Washington Is Now Must-Win | Three Wide at Scout

Well, hello, little friends, and welcome to a new thing that we're putting together here at Little Stolen Water Media. We are at Scout, and this is three wide at Scout. Now the idea here is where, I guess, every week, every other week, I'm done I'm kind of fuzzy on details. Every week. Every week? You're sure? I am positive. Okay. Every week, three of us from the stolen water range of podcasts, and that range is quite expansive, are gonna get together to talk sports. Now the eye but not just any sport. This is supposed to be a football only thing. Oh, boy. Yes. Football only is what we're doing here, and we have been threatened with banishment and, probably tax evasion charges as well if we wander off from that. So we will do our best not to. So that's in the fine print, I suppose. Very fine print. Very fine print. Every Tuesday, we'll do an hour and forty five minutes starting at 05:30 here in Scout, and I had never been in Scout. Me neither. Very nice. This is a very different sports bar. It is. Scout is located inside the Statler in Downtown Dallas. And when we say Downtown Dallas, we mean hard Downtown Dallas. Oh, yeah. It is right in the big middle of Downtown Dallas, and I know we have a lot of suburbanites out there who would not even think of treading on the mean streets of Downtown Dallas. Well Makes me nervous driving around downtown. Well, see, I'm one of them. They know me. We wanna I can do that. We wanna welcome people here every Tuesday. Come on to Scout. Yes. It's a sports bar. It's 4,000 square feet. It's got bowling alleys. Yeah. Pool table, foosball. There there's everything here. Yeah. TV is everywhere. If you'd like to do a little bowling, they got you covered over there. You wanna watch TV? There they are. 123456 within range right now. Who knows what's over there in the corners and the flanks of this place? There's one up there that didn't count. Oh, that's right. There is. Right above us. So, yes, Scout is something that you need to see. They've done great work with the Stadler. This is a very historic building. Used to be the Stadler Hilton Hotel back in the day. And, since then, they have changed it. I believe it is now residences. And, it's a cool place that you need to check out. And what better occasion than to come down here and see us? Because we will be here three wide at Scout every week. Terrific food, wonderful drinks, and cowboy football intensive on Tuesdays. There's always a game to review, and there's always a game coming up. That is for sure. Alright. He is Norm Hitskas, as you know. He is the true old school pioneer of the craft. He is Victor Villalba. He does cowboys football in Spanish on the radio. If there is any sport that needs to be done in Spanish, first call is to the great Victor Vialba. Well, thank you. And rundown what else you do because there are other things besides football. Yeah. I've I've done, of course, the the Cowboys. Started a few did a few games in '95, '96, '97. I left in midseason, came back in 2002. And, you know, it's just been a it's been a great ride, but, you know, it hasn't been culminated as with the Mavericks. Started in 2005 right off the bat went to the finals, then won the finals, and then went back to the finals. So it's been an interesting ride. Along with that, excuse me, Marm, I do PA announcing and get involved in different projects. I did some Ranger TV for a little while too. So it's it's been very Dallas centric. I'm sorry, Norm. I was gonna say, you're the jinx. When you arrive doing games, they stop winning things. Well, you know okay, Norm. Just to be clear, in '96, I did the Green Bay Dallas game, the NFC championship game. And I was told, hey, you can go to the Super Bowl with us. What we'll do is we'll I was just sort of helping out there. They said, yeah. What we'll do is we'll get a pass, and then we'll go in, and then we'll grab one of the passes. We'll come out and get and I said, no. No. No. Hold on a second. If I'm not going into the big door, I'm not going. Period. So I didn't go. I had the chance, but I it it just didn't feel right. If I am the jinx, Norm, I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. Well, maybe there's a joke. The record, I don't think you're the jinx, Victor. Okay. Well, thank you, Mike. It's time to talk cowboy game. It's one game, but I will put this on the table. The Giants urinated on them Sunday night. Purely, simply, they kicked their butt for sixty minutes. They got pushed around. Yep. There's no argument here. They were humbled to use someone's expression. That's not my he said coach Schottenheimer said, we were humbled. For a coach to say that on their first time out, you know, time out to play, that's not a good thing. No. That's not a good thing. No. It's not. Well, let's start at that level. My opinion. First and foremost, they were outcoached on Sunday. The cowboys did not look ready to play an NFL opener. No. On a Sunday night, no less. Yes. They did not. I mean, there were all kinds of mistakes, all kinds of, I don't know, situations where it just didn't seem like they had a real good handle on what they were supposed to do. Some guys didn't. I agree. And the defense well, Victor, you called all the games last year when the defense was hideous. This defense was no better than that one. The last last year, the Nadir of the season was the cardinals game. Oh. Where they came into town. Oh. Jacoby Brissett took care of business. Cowboys were embarrassed. He said Jacoby Brissett. You know. Wasn't he the guy? Yes. Yeah. Yeah. He was. And and I tell you that it was it was one of those things where, okay, where am I going to drink after the game? Because this it it I mean, to me, the the lowest point of my career with the Cowboys was that Green Bay game. That Green Bay game where where we were saying, okay, if the Cowboys well, more like when the Cowboys win and if the Niners can lose, then all of a sudden, think about it, the Cowboys could be hosting the NFC championship game and then kick off against the Green Bay Packers. And what happened? Wait a minute. There's an NFC championship game. Yeah, Norm. There is. There is. There is. Yeah. Okay. Each year, there is one. Probably forgotten about it. Well, why don't we dive into this game Sunday? As Mike first, then Victor. As you sat and watched this unfold, what were some of your prime thoughts? Some of my prime thoughts had to do with the fact that this football team has way too much talent to be like it is. So if it's got too much talent and it's still like that, what else could it be? Good question. And what I landed on is the thing that I've landed on for some time watching this this team, and I will stick with this until proven otherwise because the more I think about it, the more I buy into it. This team has no chemistry. This team has no accountability. It starts at the top. It goes all the way down. And there's there there has to be a fear factor for teams to be good. Guys have to be a little bit worried about, well, if I don't go out there and play my best, something might not happen. I might get replaced. I might get traded. They might let me go. This, that, whatever it might be. That doesn't exist with the Cowboys. Those guys go out there, and they know that they that that they can talk their way out of any kind of difficult situation that they might be in. Now you may say that's coaching. Well, yeah, maybe it is coaching, but it stems from the top. It stems from the very top, and it flows on down. And I don't know how you fix that. This puts Victor in a very difficult position. He announces games for the Cowboys. Yes. And I didn't mean to do that. No. No. No. No. I've cut my teeth in PR, so bring it. As you watch the game Yes. What were your initial reactions? Okay. First of all, I find that things have a tendency of going overboard. And what I'm referring to is the fact that the preseason for the starters is in existence now where, you know, there was a time when you had well, do you guys remember there were six preseason games at one point? Oh, yeah. That was They were all over America. That was insane. That was insane. Then there was four, and the four preseason games was, okay. Your stars might play a series just to kinda get into the rhythm of getting prepared, of getting dressed up, of walking out, warming up, going back to locker room. All that routine, you're doing that in game one. In game two, you know, maybe they play a little bit more. In game three, they'll play the first half, come out, play the second half, first series to make the adjustments, to have the lingo going on in the locker room during the halftime. And then the fourth game was like, hey, throw everybody out there and see what sticks and who's gonna stay with the team. So my point there is that in this case, we showed up at our Spanish broadcast, myself, Luis Perez, Manny, and Ivan Zuniga. We all showed up. And Bill Parcells used to say, don't eat the cheese. Don't eat the cheese. When someone's talking good about you, don't eat the cheese. Okay. I would say that the spirits surrounding the Dallas Cowboys on their way to play the Giants in East Rutherford, New Jersey was positive that the arrow was pointing upward, not straight upward, but sideways upward from the standpoint that, you know, I got a good feeling about this. Yeah. I got a good feeling about things were trending up. Things were trending up. And when you have a team that is that I mean when Brian DeBeau left the Giants they were all over the place. Right. That was not a competitive team. They needed something to happen and it did happen in the name of Jane John Harbaugh. Now the one thing I would say about this game and the preseason, it's hard to assess what's going to happen on game one when you haven't really seen anything. No. I mean, a joint practice against the Rams, a joint practice against the Saints, everyone's making note of that because that is the moment you're seeing your starters play and practice. Practice. Yeah. Whereas it used to be in those games. Then then what happens in series number one? The coin flip. The cowboy no, the Giants won it. No, the Cowboys won it and they chose to to the Giants want it and deferred. Deferred. There you go. Thank you. Giants wanted and deferred and then three and out. And then there's this moment of we're gonna go for it and fourth down. And then they go out and it's kind of like you put yourself in a situation like that in the very first series where you felt good about things. But that three and out, and then the Giants get the ball and just down the field. Well, the Cowboys wound up with only seven possessions in the game. Two in the second half. Two in the second half. That is incredible. Of their seven possession That is absurd by itself. Yep. It's tough to swallow. But the Giants in the second half kept the ball for eight minutes, then kept it for eight more, then kept it for the last five and a half. They had big boy series. And they they did it by saying to the Cowboys, we're gonna run it right down your throat. With a guy named Scataboo. We're gonna run it right down your throat. Be proud of all this defensive line you put together. But you know what? It's coming at you, baby. Because there's there is nothing frilly about Cam Scataboo. No. And they did it too. His flip there after that touchdown to go up seven zero was electric. Electric. That place was packed. And I'm gonna tell you something. The Giants deserved every single person in that stadium because they were in tune with that crowd. It was electric, man. Let me take it back to Mike, though. Mike, you're right. As you watch the game unfold, you start seeing things you thought I'm not gonna see that this year. Or at least I shouldn't. I'm not gonna see terrible miscommunication on defense. I'm not gonna see missed tackles. I'm I'm not going to see very soft pressure. The cowboys when they rushed four, which is the normal thing. People rush four in the NFL. Right. The cowboys in the game in passing situations rushed four men 20 times. They got two pressures. That's 18 times Jackson got Dart got to deliver the ball without feeling pressure. And we're talking about Jackson Dart, a quarterback that from what we hear and what we read, even the Giants aren't terribly sure of. Oh, but he looked good on Sunday. He should have. One of the thing But they're sure of him now. Well, one of the things that occurred in that game is that Jackson Dart was super duper focused, and his head coach had him let ready for the game because Yep. One, two, boom. One, two, boom. One there wasn't a moment where Jackson Dart was going back and like, oh crap. Now what am I doing? Woah, I gotta go this way. Gotta go that way. That naked bootleg, forget about it. And Isaiah, here you go, number nine likely. Eight catches, two touchdowns. That was kryptonite for the Cowboys last year, a mobile quarterback and a mobile athletic tight end. Right. I mean, kryptonite. Now, Norm, you said these are not things we should expect from a team that did what they did last year, particularly with the energy and the I'm gonna say it, charisma and all this surrounding Christian Parker to to to the point where Luis and I at the end of the game, you know, we're just looking at each other, and it's just kinda like, wow. We ate the cheese. I mean, listen. I work for the Cowboys. I want to see the Cowboys be successful. I want the Cowboys to go to a Super Bowl and win it. Why wouldn't I? Why wouldn't I? I work for the Mavericks. Excuse me, Nort. I work for the Mavericks. I've been to the finals. I was there when they won in 2011. Why wouldn't I want them to win it? Okay. But they did not earn the fact that they didn't have to play in the preseason in that season opener. The the starters didn't earn that. The problem is that's now league wide. Yeah. That's the same. Of course. That's standard fair now. Okay. But see, in the advent of football money, Joe Willie Namath was one of the very first guys when you got that $400,000 contract and all of a sudden Joe Namath is Broadway Joe. Okay? This is other this is a long time ago. Right? But see, the the the monies that are invested in players back then, all the players seem to be sort of in a certain plateau of getting paid. You know, this guy wasn't necessarily worth more than this guy or worth more than this guy. Now you have guys and league wide, you have guys that if he goes down, we got a big problem. But but when you don't play your starters, getting ready for the season is a matter of coaching. You've got the bell is gonna ring at some point. And if you're not playing them, you better be coaching them up. Guys, the game, honestly, you saw it. We talked about it. The game started and the Giants control the ball for sixty minutes. They control usually, there'll be an ebb and a flow in a game. There was one moment I thought the Cowboys might be changing the flow of the game. Yeah. It was right at the end of the first half. They'd scored a touchdown to get even. There was a fumble. And then Dak threw ten year veterans, eleven year veterans, 10 game veterans shouldn't throw that pass. That pass should be out of bounds, or the ball should be tucked to his chest, and he says, I'm gonna eat it because we're not making a first down on this series. And that changed the game. Mhmm. What could have been going through his mind? That gave the Giants the opportunity to hit twice at the end the first half. Yes. And they got the ball in second. That's right. And that's what Dak said. He said that's that was the game. Dak Prescott said that. Mike, I don't know what's going through his mind because when you look at the replays of that, and they showed it about six times. There is no feasible cowboy receiver in that area. There's not. There's okay. There was someone in the area code, but not close. You're gonna throw the ball downfield, and there's gonna be a jump ball. Understand that. Understand that at times. You're gonna throw the ball long downfield and hope. There was no jump ball here. The question was, could the Giants defensive back make it to the point, catch the ball, and stay inbounds. It was a terrible mistake, and the Cowboys never got even again. The Giants scored. They got the ball to start the second half and scored. And all of a sudden, we we have twenty two minutes left in the game. And you're saying to yourself, uh-oh, because you kept thinking, don't worry. Don't worry. We got this. We got this. The Cowboys defense will stop them. Our offense will churn downfield. Don't worry. Don't worry. And suddenly, when it's twenty one seven and you're already past the half point of the third quarter, you're into uh-oh territory. And then Javonte Williams gets called for an unsportsmanlike conduct where he himself said, I'm a vet. I gotta expect more for myself. I mean, totally uncharacteristic of a player who's a veteran, who shouldn't be doing those types of things. But at one point or another, frustration has to settle in to where you feel like you're not getting what you what you came to do. But at that point On the defensive side, particularly. At that point, Mike, Shavonte Williams was scoring a touchdown to bring the Cowboys within one score, and there were still five and a half minutes to go. I'm sorry to say this. That's stupid. That's just stupid. That is beyond stupid, and I'm a Javonte Williams fan. Oh, yes. Of course. I love that guy last year. He was fantastic. There was nobody in the league better at making more out of a run than looked like it should be there. I mean, if he ran the ball and it looked like it was about a three yard play, he'd get you five. If it looked like there was five, he'd get you eight. He did that better than anybody in the league last year and really anybody I've seen in a long time. He gave the Cowboys a running game. Yes. He did. Yes. But Victor mentioned frustration. The longest run-in the game for Javonte Williams Sunday night was eight yards. The longest run-in the game. The Cowboys longest run was a 10 yard run by Dak Prescott. Mhmm. The Cowboys never completed a pass as far as 15 yards downfield. Now they completed some shorter than that that yards after catch reached a maximum net, two seventeen yard plays. But, you know, the offense had only seven possessions. They go two and out twice a three and out twice. Dak Prescott's pass. Think of that. You were expecting we're gonna lead ten seven at the half. Mhmm. He'll get us downfield, get us in position. The ultra dependable Brandon Aubrey is gonna kick a field goal, and we're ahead at the half. Instead, you're down seven. That's a bit of a kick in the stones if you're a cowboy player. To head to the locker room thinking, Lord, we're down seven, and they're controlling the football game. They had big boy offensive series. Yep. Over double digit in plays, 80 yards, close to ten minutes. That's the way you win football games. Right. And as as Mike would call them, the New York football giants were the team to beat in that game. They had the Cowboys on, you know, on their heels. And, you know, for all the excitement that we were feeling coming up to this game Sunday night, I mean, it's it's a big deal, you know, and you're traveling with the team, and everyone seems in good spirits the night before, etcetera, etcetera. You know? I don't think anybody expected, and I don't think anybody expected it from the top to the bottom of the organization and also Cowboys Nation. No one no one expected that. Let's talk about that a little Where were we on this game beforehand? What'd you think was gonna happen, Norm? I I thought the Cowboys were gonna be in for a really good contest at the home at at the Giants home because Harbaugh is a seasoned coach, but I thought the Giants were not as good a football team as the Cowboys. By the way, I mentioned this to Victor. There was an uh-oh moment for me Sunday morning. I opened the morning news, and all six of their predictors Yeah. Picked the Cowboys. I looked at that and I thought, uh-oh, it's not that easy. Yep. Whenever there's a team that is overwhelmingly picked over another one, the team that is not picked, something happens. And I'm not saying all the time, but I mean, I remember for example, Daniel Jones playing for Duke. They were playing at Notre Dame. This is a few years ago. And you know, nobody would pick Duke against Notre Dame in the Big House or whatever they call it. You know, nobody would in in East Bend, right? East Bend? South Bend. South Bend. South Bend. There you go. So so I mean, you see the the Duke team coming down the tunnel and what, you know, when I was flipping around, I saw that that was that was gonna happen. I thought, you know, this could be it because for whatever reason and hey, I just I'd like to see Notre Dame lose for whatever reason. And if I'm offending somebody, I'm sorry, but you know, just so I was rooting for Duke. Their special teams stallion gets hurt at the beginning and they're like and they end up winning this game against Notre Dame. Nobody picked them to win. And that those types of scenarios have occurred in and I'll tell you, I'm like you guys. I have watched sports since I'm four years old. You know, I watch sports all the time and I'm in tune with sports and there just seems to be something to be said about that underdog feeling that nobody, nobody is picking us. You know, Mike, I saw in the paper, saw it again today. There's some there seems to be some kind of narrative going on that well, we got these young players, and young players make mistakes. Cowboys are not a young team. They're not. Think of this. They had three rookies play Sunday, Downs, Lawrence, and Barrow. They had two second year men play significant roles, Aziraku and Booker. As Zeraku played well He had that one flag where the face mask. Booker played well. The kids played well. Yeah. The mistakes in this game, the butt kicking in this game happened when the cowboy veterans got their butt kicked. That's what's concerning. Alright. Well, let me ask you boys this. Tell me what you thought about these scenarios. On both of the touchdown passes that the Giants threw Oh. Later on in the game. Oh. There was not a cowboy within the next county. The past that Lee with PJ Lock trying to catch him catch up to him. I mean, that's kryptonite. Yeah. You can't cover a athletic tight end. What's going on? And the one before that, two that they scored a touchdown. Well, the the three passes, the three screen passes to the left side as they're heading to the end zone, and then Singleton throw just runs in with the ball. Yeah. That was like, what what's going on here? I'll sit now. I'll write every play. I'll record on my yellow pad. I'll go through six, seven pages, single spaced. On on my pad Sunday, Mike, I must have written who had him about six times. You're right. It it is awful to see the other team score and not be able to figure out who screwed up because there was nobody There's nobody around him. And during that drive, at the end of the first half, the Giants threw three passes to wide reach to tight end and wide receivers. You couldn't figure out who was supposed to be covering it. No. It that that shouldn't happen. I don't care if it's a new defensive coordinator. I don't care if it's a new system. Hey. They started practicing this new system in April and May. Somewhere, communication should have started on this. You've got him. I've got him at the line of scrimmage. Communicate. Okay. He's going in motion. You come over here. I'll pick up this guy. You look at things and you said during the game at points who had Malik Nabors? Who had Lively? Who had Darnell Darnell Mooney or Daryl Mooney? Daryl Mooney. Okay. Daryl Mooney. Who had who had the kid Malachi Fields for heaven's sake? And the running back Singletary, he has one outstanding ability. He's had it for his entire NFL career. He can catch the ball going out of the backfield. Yeah. And three plays in a row, nobody covers him. That's just somewhere in there, we're talking coaching, Mike. But also, I there there is the case that Demare Novoschon was out and he was the green dot at the beginning of the game. He comes out and coach Schottenheimer did mention in his press conference that communication was an issue. And that communication issue last year was the loudest thing we were hearing. You know, when you see certain players, you're looking at the, you know, the video and someone's actually scoping it out and you see how out of position a player is from any team and any video and any game, you're like, something's wrong here. And the bottom line of that apparently was communication. Which raises the question, what the hell are they doing in training camp? I agree. Isn't this supposed to be worked out in training camp? I agree. It's hard to assess. It's hard to see exactly what you got sometimes when, you know, guys don't play at all. Yeah. It goes back to what we were talking about earlier Yes. Before we got on here. Yeah. But everybody has that. No. Of course. Everybody has that. Everybody has an a giant unknown preparing for game one. Yeah. Some people come out, and they look sharp as daylights. I hate to say this. You know who one of those teams was Sunday? The New York Jets. The pitiful, downtrodden New York Jets seemed to know what the hell they were doing. They went to Tennessee and beat them. And and beat them handily. Yep. And they seem to have a plan. Yeah. They seem to be able to execute. And that coach across the way from the Cowboys the other night is known for that very thing. Yep. And it seems like somebody in the Cowboys organization would recognize the fact that they may not be very good, but they will be well prepared. They will know what they're doing. They're gonna know what we're doing. And it seems like somebody would have thought about all that and and just made it more of a point throughout the week to get the stuff together. The fact is Jackson Dart was focused. The fact that he was spot on. The his chronometer in his mind, his his his pocket presence, he knew he had 1.5, 1.7 seconds. Pow. Yeah. Back, one two, boom. Well, that's and when you're excuse me. When you when you're watching a quarterback and he he he goes back and he sets and his his neck and his helmet is very still. It's not like like that. He throws the pass and boom, complete. And to me, Jackson Dart was spot on. His numbers say it, His leadership in the field say that, and the results says it. Yeah. You can't argue with that. And I'll tell you what, if that's what he really is We'll see next Monday against the Rams in in LA. We will. But if that's what Jackson Dart really is, that team's gonna be a contender. Victor, you mean you mentioned something about it. That he would get the ball. The helmet doesn't move. The eyes do. Okay? And he delivers it. If your defense can't cover for under two seconds, come on. You can't cover the tight end for two seconds for heaven's sakes? You can't. Malik Nabors runs one, two, three, four, five, cut left, catch it. You can't cover that long? I I kept saying during the game, why don't the Cowboys press more? The Giants got to do whatever they wanted in the first 10 to 12 yards of the field. Yeah. I never saw a a short route and the receiver get plastered because the corner was all over it. I never saw that ever. And, hey, back to the very top. We're talking one game here. We are. We are. Oh, yeah. There's a mountain of things during the film this week that the Cowboys are gonna have to sort out. And I don't I don't know how to fix that with a finger snap. I don't know. No. You can't. And this was Jackson Dart too. This was not Jaden Daniels. This was not Jalen Hurts. This was Jackson Dart who, from everything I read, it didn't sound like the Giants were terribly high on him. He didn't start last year. Yeah. Russell Wilson was the quarterback in that crazy 40 to 37 game at AT And T Stadium. Yeah. But they were I think last year, Dabo wanted to start Wilson until he felt Dart was ready from watching. Sure. Normal thing to do. Dart is a good player, but you can take a good player and make him a very good player by coaching. Yes. And Jackson Dart, at least on Sunday, looked like he was in total control of the game. He did. If you he's a kid that will take off and run on you. If you pressure him, he will take off and run. If you constantly pressure him, his feet are always moving. His feet are ready to flee. If but if you don't pressure the quarterback okay. I'm gonna ask each of you for a quick question. Who's our big pressure man on defense? One of the defensive tackles maybe? Quinnon Williams. Eziraku. Eziraku. Rashan Gary. Von Miller. On the field for 20 pass plays Sunday and got one pressure. One pressure in 20 plays from an edge rusher. There's Von Miller. There's the kid Malachi Lawrence. There's James Houston. There's all the tackles. But a lot of teams have the guy that's gonna be their pressure man. Yeah. And they and he causes defense to locate him. Who does the defense have to locate on offense have to locate on the Cowboys? I have no idea. Right? No. We lived for years with a Micah Parsons presence like that. Yeah. But Those were good days. DeMarcus Lawrence. Exactly. Mhmm. But now let me take that a step further. Who's our star cornerback? You know, we didn't mention Deron Bland. I didn't mention his name once during the game on Sunday. And when the game was over, also and I looked at him on the field, and I went, golly, I didn't mention him at all. But see, sometimes when you don't mention a corner, it's like you don't mention offensive linemen until they're called for a, you know, for a offside on a third and two, you know? And there you say, oh boy, god, I what happened there? You know? And so maybe he was really good, but, you know, he made somebody people disappear. Yeah. Sometimes when you don't mention a corner, that's what's happening. Exactly. He's having a really, really good game. Exactly. On the other hand, I saw Giants wide receivers on his side of the field catch several passes. Yeah. Don't get me wrong. I don't think that's what's happening with DeRon Bland. So what we've got here is this combination problem. A lukewarm pass rush and only pretty good corners. And that's not a good situation defensively. But you have to add also the fact that Jackson Dart was getting rid of the ball very quickly and very precisely, I wanna say. And that was killing the Cowboys. Well, if you're the coach and you see that quickly, don't you say, wait a minute. Get up in their face. Get up in the face. You would hope so. And I never saw that. I never thought, wow. He's right in Nabors' face. I saw a couple of double teams, but Dart recognized them and said, well, Likely's open, Mooney's open, Fields is open. Don't worry. Singletary's open. Yeah. Can I put one fascinating small note first? Go ahead. This game really intrigued me from one angle. These two teams made a small trade in last spring's draft. Mhmm. The Giants had, as I recall, pick 11. Mhmm. Cowboys had picked 12. Mhmm. Cowboys wanted Caleb Downs. Bad. Bad. The Giants, I think, love Caleb Downs, but they needed a monster in their offensive line. And I mean monster. They needed a kick butt and take names player in their offensive line, But they had to trade with their division four, their archrival, and let Dallas have what they wanted, Caleb Downs. So they squeezed a couple of later draft picks out of Dallas to flip. Dallas got Caleb Downs. They're thrilled with it. New York got this guy, Mowigoa. Miami. Was a tackle. They moved him inside. This guy is going to be a horror story for this league for the next twelve years. He just took Kenny Clark and swallowed him alive. Kenny Clark was no factor in this football game. I did notice that. Now it's not unusual for guys who play the position that Kenny Clark plays to not get mentioned too much. And a lot of the time, that just means that they did a really good job. They had a really good game because you don't you just don't hear about those guys being, you know, pop culture factors in the game or anything But like still. There's a lot of contact going on in the running game where the Giants were giving the ball to Scataboo, and it's like, hey, here I come. And there's a lot of contact going on there. But, you know, what what Mike just said, it's hard to really assess what's going on unless you sit down and look at the video. And I say that in in basketball, and I say that in football because you can say, hey, I watched the game and this and that, but until you see, for example, what happened here? Oh, see. Oh, see. Right there, he makes the wrong move, the half step, and that was it. I mean, you have to assess that from the standpoint of sitting with somebody who knows what they're looking for when they're looking at video. To be able to say, hey, was Kenny Clarke a factor? Yes or no? Well, let's go to the video, I would say. Because I go back to the same thing. If if a quarterback, regardless of any game, any teams, if if the quarterback is getting rid of the ball in that one point five seconds that that that you have in the pocket, good things are gonna happen to that team. I think that the Cowboys thought their defensive line was better than the Giants offensive line. And that was not the truth Sunday. At the end of the game. It it the whole at the end of the game, you look at the whole game and the Giants offensive line, they just ran it. They ran it when they wanted to. They ran it whenever they wanted to. They did. They were getting five yards a pop. They ended up with 4.5 yards per carry, and, Scottie will have 81. You know, Jackson Dart had 54. You know, he take took off on that 22 yard run. Nobody home. You know, the interesting thing, just to go back to this and then move on to the next topic, was looking at that trade Sunday. The cowboys got what they wanted. They need a star on defense. I mean, Quinton Williams is a very good player, but they need a star. And I think Kale Downs is gonna be a star. And the Giants said, our offensive line is full of pantywaist here. We need somebody in here who's gonna be boss. We need the godfather in our line. They got what they wanted in the trade, and Dallas got what they wanted to trade. And and in that draft, the picks eleven and twelve, that was the end of the premier players. Those were the last two premier players left in the first round of the draft. Now there were some other pretty good players, but those were the last two of the considered premier players. And we saw them both on Sunday, and I both teams are very happy with what they got. Yeah. Caleb Downs had a nice, pressure and put, Jackson Dart on his butt one time, And, he had to get rid of the ball and, but, you know, other than that, it wasn't there wasn't much pressure on Jackson Dart. No. No. There wasn't. I another small point. I'd like to see a rule changed in the NFL. A statistical rule changed. Like The ball snapped, the quarterback drops back to pass. He feels pressure. He runs. He's tackled at the line of scrimmage. The league awards a sack for that. That wasn't a sack. Tackle for loss? He he didn't lose anything, though. Oh, so he got back to the He got back to the line of scrimmage. Mhmm. And that's a sack? They still call that a sack. I did not know that. And and there was one other sack. The Cowboys had two sacks in the game. How much yardage did the Giants lose on the two sacks? None. One yard. Well They got him at the line of scrimmage, and they got him one yard behind the line of scrimmage. That was their two sacks. When you think of sack, you think, boom. Eight yards behind the line of scrimmage, blow it up, knock him down. Never did that. Well, there was that one, fumble. The ball jumped in the air and Yes. John Runyon. Oh my god. That's the football. I better run with it. Weird play. That was John Runyon's John Runyon will show that to his kids. John Runyon Junior. Fifteen years from now. Has John Runyon ever got to advance the ball in a game of football before? But you're you're Probably not. You're a guard, Mike. You do nothing. You're in there. You're fighting people. They're spitting on you. All of a sudden, the ball's floating in midair. You're the only one around. I'm gonna be a hero. And by the way, the dude took off running. He secured the football. It wasn't very fast. Rumble. He still do what to do? I've got okay. I've got a talking point for you guys now. I'm suspicious of the Cowboys already, and I'll tell you why. It comes from, of all things, gambling. I think we assume that a team is gonna be favored by so much. K? You look at a game and you think, oh, they're gonna be favored by so much. Now the Cowboys favored three on Sunday. That means they would have been favored nine at home. You flip the three point home field advantage. So the Cowboys wouldn't favored nine against the giant team that won four games last year. Reasonable. Washington was awful last year. They won five games. Do you know what the line open for the Cowboys home to Washington this Sunday? Four and a half. And you know what happened? Some Washington money started to show up immediately. I thought the Cowboys would be a seven or eight point favorite this weekend. And they were favored by four and a half. And they're favored by four and a half, and it's dropped to four in some places. Meaning, if you take away the home field advantage, the odds makers think the Cowboys are paper thin better than the Commanders, which leads me to a question. What if this team starts o and two? If this team starts o and two, I think you got a problem on your hands. Big one. With all the expectations that were before game one, oh and two, and then think about it, oh and two, God forbid, and on your way to Rio. Yeah. To play Baltimore. To play the And then coming coming home Planes to go for the Houston. At midday. The the the Giants and the Redskins are one thing, Mike. Baltimore and Houston, they're another thing in this league. I know. I get that. O and two. I mean, there would be some panic in Cowboy Nation if this team started o and two. And that makes this must win. Well, when you look down the road, the Giants and the Washington team this weekend, I think you consider two those two two of the seven easiest games on the schedule. And remember last year, when the Cowboys went seven, nine, and one, they lost to the four win Giants and three win Arizona Cardinals. Unbelievable. But an o two hole for this team. They have got seven games left this year with teams that won 11 games or more last season. Seven against 11 or more win teams. You you can't Which means they really needed to win that game last week, and they really need to win this week. Bingo. Bingo. And I think we can dismiss all the oil. It's first game. It's everything like that. Hey. This team, it's gotta beat teams like this. These are the teams they're better than. Last year, I was shocked when they lost to Arizona. Everybody was. Arizona's pond scum. Didn't they lose every game after that? They were terrible. They were good that night. And but the way this you guys know this, the way the schedule works. You gotta you gotta take the wins when you're supposed to get them. Now, down the road, you can split with the eagles. It's okay. You can beat Baltimore and lose to Houston. That's okay. You can beat the That's a pretty big win. Exactly right. You can beat the rams and lose to San Francisco. That's okay. But if you started losing to people like the Giants and the Commanders, that's not okay. And there were gobs of problems last week. I mean, gobs of them. Unexpected situations. I agree. Yes. And let's talk offense for a minute. TJ Bass was by the ratings from Pro Football Focus. Terrence Steele was the worst player on the field for the Cowboys offensively. With Tyler Smith gone, that offensive line is still gotta create running lanes, and there were no running lanes Sunday. It was the Giants and the Giants. I don't know if you looked at my thought. I looked at the Giants defensive line and I said, where's the beef? There were no Otito or Bonias out there or Quinn and Williams. There were no guys the size of a condo. They were all like giant leopards on the Giants defense. And I've I've talked too much. I'm gonna go back to you guys. Do you think I know the Cowboys know it. I know their staff knows it. Do you think Cowboy Nation knows how critical it is to win this game Sunday? Oh, of course. I would say yes. I hope so. I would say yes. I don't know if I have a good feel for exactly what cowboy nation is anymore. Okay. I don't know if I have a real good feel for how many of them really take football seriously and how many of them are just just day trippers. Is that a gen is that a generational thing you see? It it could be. Yeah. It it could very well be. But, yeah, this is I I mean, this it's crazy to call game two of the year must win, but they have no choice but to approach it that way. And with Baltimore and Houston on the horizon. Yeah. I mean, you could be looking at o and four. You could because Baltimore is gonna be favored in Rio, and Houston's gonna be favored at home to the Cowboys. Not Rio? It's Rio. Yeah. Yeah. It's a cow Cowboys home game actually. Yes. But still, when they make the line, Baltimore will be favored there, and Houston will be favored there the next two weeks. Mhmm. Yeah. You better win this. You better take care of business. How do we feel about shotty? Oh, boy. That was right where it's gonna go next to you guys. That he got outcoached Sunday. Plainly, outcoached. John Harbaugh had them ready. There's no doubt about that. Yeah. And there's no disgrace in getting outcoached by John Harbaugh. And Mike Nagy. And Yeah. I I mean, though, he does that. He does that, you know, he's always got a a great staff with him. And, I mean, for me, he's probably a top three coach in the league. Hall of Famer, wouldn't you say? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Eighteen years with Baltimore, but nine I years mean nine year what you just said. Yep. Eighteen years with one team. And nine before that with the Eagles. Who does that, man? You know, assistance, he was the special teams guy, and then he was a secondary guy. You know, whoever's running special teams doesn't stick around very long, you know, usually. Yeah. I mean, there's no there's only so many bones fossils out there. Right? They they go somewhere else. They go somewhere else, And then they move to something else. Yeah. You know, secondary coaches, etcetera. But, know, there he is with Ray Rhodes, and there he is with Andy Reid. Nine years. He understand John Harbaugh went to the game Giants Cowboys understanding exactly the rivalry ramifications because that has something to do with it. I don't care what you know, I just feel that rivalry when I when I grew up in Mexico City, I was not a fan of any particular team. I just like the rivalries, man. And my favorite rivalry was the steelers and the oilers because if they were playing at 3 Rivers or they're playing at the Astrodome, it's time to get down. And Mike Renfro was in. He was in. Yes. But but my point is that Now that's something I didn't think was gonna come up tonight. Well, of course not. Us us old guys. But but anyway, but to me, the the the calm and the coolness of a John Harbaugh in the controls, basically, in in in Mexico, there's a thing where someone's getting a little too excited. Calm down. Right? And he was just everybody. But see, eighteen years. It's easy to say eighteen years. That's a that's a tremendous factor. But but back to what Mike asked. Yes. Harbaugh is a given commodity. No question. But shotty coached a better team. That was the I think, opinion of the Cowboys versus the guys. So Shadi was coaching the better team. That club last year, I listen. I wanna say this. I don't know Brian Schottenheimer at all. He seems like a terrific fellow. I really mean this. I wish you were my next door neighbor, because he looks like the kind of guy that would say, hey. While you're on vacation, I'll mow your lawn for you. Okay? He looks like that kind of guy. He's positive. He's upbeat. He's happy. And he would mow the lawn because he wants to do exercise, and he wants to be out in the sun. The bottom line is, in this league, you gotta win. Mike McCarthy with an injured Dak Prescott went seven and ten. Brian Schottenheimer with a healthy Dak Prescott and an offense that churned up and down the field went seven nine and one. How that team didn't win more games last year than the year before, I don't know. But what if this team ends up a seven or eight win team? How hot does that seat start to get? I don't think there's any question about it. Somebody else is coaching them next year. Might be. Now I think the Joneses really like Brian Schott Schottheimer. Nheimer. I in fact, I think everybody really likes Brian Schottheimer. Yeah. He seems like a great guy, but here's here's the thing. Recent Cowboys coaches are a lot more like Brian Schottenheimer than John Harbaugh. You know, just in the in mainly in the way that they would go about dealing with the front office. The cowboy coach has a boss. I bet John Harbaugh doesn't have hasn't had too many bosses in his career. I will say this. I don't think the general manager makes any kind of significant move without sitting down with Geronimo Harbaugh and saying, what do you think? You want this guy? What do you want? Yeah. What do you want? What do you need? Yeah. There's no question about that. I what do you need? I need a guy in the offensive line to kick butt and take names. We're gonna out physical the people we play. We not may not beat them now, but they're gonna go to the locker room thinking, dear lord, those people are tough. They will they will keep hitting you, and the Giants on Sunday just kept hitting Dallas. They have a great center, veteran guy, Schmidt. And they all You need it. You need one of those. Terrific left tackle who's healthy now in Andrew Thomas. And and Runyon is one of those big old veteran grunt guys at left guard. It it's a good spot. He's one of those guys who may not have the ability and the skill that he once did, but he's seen everything. And he gets done. He gets it done. Now let's go back to that. What record is unacceptable for the Cowboys this year? The seven win season is unacceptable. I agree. Without a doubt. Where does eight fall? Right on the line? Still not good. Still a little unacceptable. You were thinking to start the year 10? Yeah. I I think there were a lot of people out there that thought that. I don't know if I did, but I think there were I mean, you know how it is before the season starts with the Cowboys anyway. Everybody always gets a little bit crazy. But this year okay. But this year, I don't think anybody was getting crazy, but it was an off season of no drama. Where were the Cowboys last year? That's true. With Micah Parsons, and he's sitting in, and he's this Yeah. And he before with C. D. Lamb. Exactly. I mean, this year, there was zero of that. Zero of that. And, you know I mean, there were no big contract scenes, were there? No. They basically said, hey, Quinn and Williams, here you go. Yeah. And and didn't make a peep. And as you were saying on the drive down here, Norm, they've got salary cap space all over the kazoo. They've got a huge salary space right now. And there was talk of, you know, doing something and this and that. And I mean, there's always that talk. They're always everyone's always working the phones. Right? I mean and to me, it wasn't like an expectation of, oh, there's gonna they're gonna win 12 games this year, etcetera, etcetera. No. It was more like the season starts with positive vibes. Yeah. And for those cowboy fans that are like, we're going to the Super Bowl, and that and the others, like, calm down. Let's play the first game. Let's see what's going on. I mean, the game was a winnable game. When when Javonte Williams shows the ball to this cornerback and gets flagged for unsportsome unlike conduct, I, Yosmio, what happened there? You know, you and and and then the story goes is that they were gonna go for two. Instead, Aubrey misses the extra point by a solid 10 feet. Yeah. He went wide right. That is the worst kick that I think I've ever seen him have. And and Yeah. Unexpected, but still. You read this stuff, and that set up a longer extra point. A 48 year old 48 yard kick for Aubrey, we think Shouldn't be. Of just, that's it. Don't worry about it. Yeah. That's what we were feeling. Yeah. And and it's funny because in in my broadcast and our broadcast, Luis, who's the color analyst, he basically calls the extra points and the field goals. So he basically he calls Brandon Aubrey the Martian because the spaceship comes in on Sundays and drop him off, and then the spaceship goes back and then comes pick him up after. So he said, El Marciano. Right? I mean, you know, he's lining up, and Luis is kinda like, yeah. Well, here we go with I mean, woah. What? That wasn't even close. But but let's go to that taunting silk. Demarvian Overshone is an incredible athlete, but it's like he just runs around on defense at times. He's got so much athleticism. He just chases stuff instead of, hey. You've got a responsibility on this play. And the hit out of bounds on Jack Dart. You know better than that. That was a critical penalty for that New York drive. That was a huge 15 yards. But you gotta keep it real out there, Norm. That's the one thing about the game too. Excuse me. The a lot of penalties on both sides. Too many. Yes. New I thought by the way, just like me for saying this if you want. I thought the Cowboys got the better of the officiating. I saw a couple of the interferences against Lamb, and I thought, what? And then his touchdown pack catch, Lamb runs the end zone, stiff arms, Deontay Banks. I mean, fully extended arm and shoves him and then turns to his left and catches the ball. Offensive interference. Hey. The one time the Cowboys forced a punt in the game okay. Quick quiz. Who's Jordan Stout? Jordan Stout. Who's Jordan Stout? Giants punter? You saw him once. You saw him once You're right. Sunday, and that was the drive that the Cowboys stopped the third and one that the officials blatantly missed, a face mask on Quinn and Williams, on Cam Scataboo. I mean, it wasn't in the middle of the line somewhere. Williams had broken through, reached out, and grabbed the mask, and Scataboo went, come on, man. Come on. That was the one time the Cowboys stuffed the third down. Do you realize the Giants never had a three and out? Never. Not once. Not once did Dallas cause a three and out. Whole game. Where does this thing go from here? Good question. It is one game, and that's all it is. Let me ask you this first. You think the Giants are a contender? Borderline. I'd say let's wait till Monday when they play the Rams in LA or in Inglewood. But losing to the Rams wouldn't nullify them as a contender. Hold on. Depends how they lose. If they lose Maybe. Now look what happened in Australia and Melbourne. Look what happened there. Rams were awful. The Rams and it's all that travel thing and all that, you know, the the Niners got there earlier and this and that. And, you know, sometimes traveling to the other side of the world, you know, it it it doesn't help the product. You know? It's it's kinda like, okay. You know, you want to be international. You wanna go here. You wanna go there, etcetera. But You wanna grow the game? Yeah. You want you want to grow the game. You mean you wanna go to Brazil? Hey. You know what? Rio, it's seven hours, and, you know, the Spanish broadcast is not going to Rio. We're doing the game here because of security reasons. You know? It was a little disappointing, but Brazil doesn't want you in the country? Is that the security reasons? Norm, I don't know about that. But I think anybody anywhere would take Victor. Oh, come on now. What do you know about me? Not a lot. But, Mike, your question's well taken. It it circles back to the critical nature of this week's game with Baltimore and Houston immediately on the horizon. Right now, you would love to go two and two this season. You would love I would love to see two and two after four games given that we've got the giant Giants upset in the rearview mirror now. That would mean the Cowboys would win two of the next three games. That'd be fine. That'd be awesome. Fine. Yeah. To be two and two after four games and have both Baltimore and Houston behind you. Take a deep breath. But you gotta do that. Oh, yeah. Of course. And to go back to your point, the massive nature of this game against Washington. If you lose this game, even if you pull an upset one of those next two Yeah. You've started one and three. Well, games against Washington are always big anyway. Yes. Totally. I mean, it's a division game. It's an NFC East game. It's a rivalry game. It's we know you. We know where you live game. Yeah. It's a game against the quarterback with quick feet. Aiden Daniels. A quarterback that will run around on you. Yes. That's bothered the Cowboys in the past. It bothered them Monday or Sunday because Dart will take off on you. Daniels will take off on you. And the commanders present a kind of different problem. Their running back situation, I think that kid's underrated. And Oh, what kid is this? Crosley. What is it? Crosley Merrill. Yeah. Merrill. Yes. Yes. They've added Stefon Diggs to be the partner for Terry McLaurin. McLaurin was not Terry Scary Terry when you could triple team him. Yeah. When you could drop the linebacker into the short flat and the corn the cornerback took the outside, the safety took the inside. But you know what? You can't do that to Washington anymore. Diggs can still play. Diggs was the solid receiver on the New England Super Bowl team last year, and they just scored 22 points on the Eagles. Eagles are one of the three, four, five best defenses in this league. And the Eagles I mean, the Commanders could have won that game. They could have. Yep. They could have won the game. Yep. Went down to the wire. And careful with this guy, Chig Akwonkwo. Thank you. Yes. He's questionable according to this step chart I'm looking at. But, you know, you get an athletic tight end who can push people around, and that's kryptonite for anybody. But seeing what, Isaiah likely did last week this last Sunday, That's a that's a red flag there. Yeah. It makes you wonder if the Cowboys know how to defend anybody like that or if they've got anybody that can. Well, we've got this there are two commanders. Okay? There's the one last year that wasn't any good, but then Jaden Daniels got hurt, and they were just playing guys. Okay? And they fell apart. And then there's the commanders from the year before. They were terrific football team. They went to the playoffs. Yes. They did. Which which team you're gonna get this Sunday? If the commanders are anywhere back to being fairly close to what they were two years ago, now that Daniel's as well, this is a challenge. Oh, yeah. That's that's a problem. Yeah. It's a problem. Let me ask you this before we go. Are the New York football giants a contender in this thing? Boy, I tell you, it would be it it would be hard to say, from the standpoint of yes or no. It's almost like it's not yes or no, a contraire. You know, like, do I have to answer that question? Yes, you do. That's why we're here. That's why we're here. Okay. Based on Jackson Dart, the way he played, because to me, he was very efficient. To me, he did the game plan the way John Harbaugh wanted. If you can get that week in and week out, yes, they're a contender. But can you get that sort of, gain from your quarterback week in and week out? Because I go back to the same thing. The Cowboys didn't get to Jackson Dart, but Jackson Dart was getting rid of the ball very quickly Mhmm. And very efficiently. There was no like, oh, hey, what do no. It was like, don't pop pop. And then that naked bootleg for 22 yards. I mean, that was a planned run. Yeah. So But he knew where he was going, and he got there. Completely. Completely. And and then those three passes, Norm, that you were mentioning, the the screen passes on the left side, I mean, that was like, okay. What is going on here? Because we were we were positioned in the end zone in a corner where that was going on on this side of the field. So when you saw those three plays, there was an avenue wider than 35 going north from six thirty five is going to eventually be. Three plays and no one covered it. There was no one in the radius. Yes. No one in the radius. Well, but that goes with the game. There was no one around Likely or Neighbors or Mooney or Fields at times. That's what's concerning. Totally. And to answer your question, Mike, I think three teams in the West are legit. Rams, 49ers, and Seattle. I think they're legit. Mhmm. I think the NFC South, the champion goes, and everybody else goes home from the New Orleans, Atlanta, Tampa, those people. The Central's interesting. Will it produce two teams? Lions and bears? That would leave only the champion. That's the North you've mentioned. The North. I'm sorry. And that would leave only the champion of the NFC East getting there. Can to go back to your question, can the Giants be the champion of the NFC East? I don't know. I don't know either. But But I'm not ready to write them off based on what we saw last week. Oh, okay. You're not ready to anoint them, but you're not ready to write them off. Right. So there you go. It's not yes or no. Yeah. Well, what we saw Sunday I'm really good at straddling middle ground. There you go. We saw Sunday was remarkably encouraging to a Giants fan. Oh, yeah. Of course. Very discouraging to a Cowboys fan. That crowd was electric. The Cowboys knew they had an offense, and they've got an offense. Now it's not gonna be quite the offense everybody thought until Tyler Smith gets back at at left guard. But everybody anticipated, oh, don't worry. Our defense is gonna be a lot better. Yeah. Good stuff. It wasn't better at all. Shades of everything we saw last year. Exactly. And then Unfortunately. Because if you don't solve that problem against Washington and you take those problems to Brazil playing Baltimore and Houston playing the Texans, God bless the child. Yes. Alright. Here's a poser for you. Did the Malik Davis injury last Friday affect the game? I don't think so. K. Cowboys had the ball so little. And Javonte Williams is a fine runner, and he got 3.4 yards to carry with a long carry of eight. Malik Davis, a nice player. You know, the Giants had a very interesting run by committee where it was it was led by Scataboo, but you got Tracy playing, you got Singletary playing. And the the one thing I will say about the Cowboys that really mystified me was, where is Jake Ferguson? I think they threw the ball to him that I remember once at the one yard line. Someone put a pop on him. He dropped the ball. I mean, where was he? I told I remember too. Yeah. I mean, to to me, it seems like for the Cowboys to be successful, Jake Ferguson has to be part of that success. The pro football focus grades every game. I'm not a huge fan of that, but you can get a feeling for for performance. They graded Steele, Ferguson, and Flournoy, the three worst players on the field for the Cowboys Sunday. Boy. It's hard.
