Super Bowl 60 Sent the Same Message — Defense Still Wins | Just Wondering with Norm Hitzges
In this episode of Just Wondering with Norm Hitzges, Norm and Mary Hitzges break down Super Bowl 60 and the message it delivered — again — to the rest of the NFL.
The final score shows Seattle Seahawks 29, New England Patriots 13, but Norm explains why the game was never that close. Seattle’s defense controlled the afternoon from start to finish, confusing young quarterback Drake May with late-shifting coverages, constant pressure, and disciplined execution. Norm points out that this win adds to a now overwhelming trend: the team with the better defense has won 49 of the 60 Super Bowls.
From there, Norm turns his attention to the Dallas Cowboys — and doesn’t mince words. He argues that Dallas continues to ignore the most obvious lesson in football history, investing heavily in offense while hoping defense will somehow catch up. Norm lays out exactly what the Cowboys should do: use early draft picks and available free-agent money on five or six defensive players who can contribute immediately.
The episode also highlights Seattle’s overlooked advantages, including elite special-teams play from kicker Jason Myers and punter Michael Dixon, who consistently flipped field position. Norm praises head coach Mike McDonald’s brilliant game plan, noting how Seattle built a championship defense without relying on massive salaries — instead emphasizing smart drafts, mid-tier contracts, and cohesion.
It’s a familiar lesson, delivered once again on the biggest stage: offense sells hope, but defense still wins championships.

The final score of Super Bowl 60, Seattle 29, New England 13, actually feels a bit deceiving.
It felt like New England got much more of a beating than that in the game, quite honestly.
Friday, when we previewed the game, I picked Seattle by a lot.
I thought they could win the game by double digits because of one factor.
They had the better defense.
There have now been 60 Super Bowls and add this one to the list of the previous 59 winners.
In the 60 Super Bowls, the team in the game with the higher ranked better defense has now
won 49 of the 60.
Did you hear that, Dallas?
Defense wins Super Bowls.
Oh, it's nice to have a good offense, for sure.
But Seattle's offense was pretty good, but their defense, it was really good.
In the Dallas Cowboys defense, it sucks.
Dallas needs to use its draft picks, at least the first two.
And it's available free agent money on defense, defensive players.
Depending on what scheme Christian Parker's going to run, this team needs five or six
new defensive players, and those two rookies will be expected to contribute immediately
if they're first round defensive picks.
The stats really are deceiving in this game.
New England was shut out through three quarters.
Welcome to the play numbers from the first New England 10 possessions.
These are the number of plays they ran per possession.
And their first drive, which was their best drive of the first three quarters of the
game, New England ran eight plays, and they reached the Seattle 43 yard line.
They would never reach as far as the Seattle 43 yard line again in the first three quarters
of the game.
They had the ball eight plays, their first possession, then four plays, their second possession,
and then three, and then three, and then six, and then one, and then three, and then three,
and then three, and then four.
That's five, three, and outs, two, four, and outs, that one play was the needle down
at the end of the half, and then a six play, and out, and an eight play, and out.
In the total of the 10 possessions, they had the ball in the first three quarters of the
game.
They ran only 38 plays, a little less than four plays per possession.
And again, they never got further than the Seattle 43 yard line in the first three quarters
of this game.
The young solid quarterback for New England and Drake May seemed totally confused in this
game, confused by a vast variety of blitzes, confused by the zone coverages Seattle ran.
And by the way, switched very near the snap so many times in the game that the defense
that may thought he'd read with maybe seven seconds to go on the snap-cloth, that defense
changed in the last seven seconds. Seattle shifted, moved into blitzes, dropped people off.
It was a masterful performance by the Seattle defense.
For the game, Great May had one fumble, had two interceptions, one of them returned for
a pick six, and six sacks.
He was hampered by the fact that New England does not have a number one receiver.
Stefan Diggs, maybe their top receiver, him or Boute, I don't think back Holland's would
qualify, one of them's a number two receiver, one of them's a number three receiver, but
in the draft or in free agency, New England must find a top notch wide receiver threat.
You know, one other note in this game before we get to some final comments.
The Seattle special teams were fantastic.
The place kicker, Jason Myers, who by the way, Seattle signed after he was with the jets
last time in his career.
He made five for five field goals and two extra points, Myers scored 17 of the Seattle
29 points.
And the punter Michael Dixon was fabulous.
He punted seven times for a net, not an average, for a net of a bit over 47 yards per punt.
That means every time Seattle punted, the average change in the field position by 47 yards.
That's fantastic.
And two of three of Dixon's punts were inside the 20, two of them were inside the six inside
the 10 at the six and four yard lines.
Fantastic special teams performances.
Now the MVP went to Kenneth Walker and that's probably who it should have gone to.
The most valuable player can't be given to the defense, which is who the award should
have gone to.
But the best player individual player in the game for Seattle was Walker, who ran and caught
and drove the New England defense a little bit crazy.
His total yard, some scrimmage, a little over 160 yards.
But we must finish with the coach, Mike McDonald.
He's only 38 years old.
He had a defensive background.
He left the job as the Ravens, Baltimore, the Ravens defensive coordinator, to take over
the job as the Seattle head coach.
The game plan today was brilliant.
It was based on befuddling, great May.
I don't think Seattle worried about New England being able to run the ball.
And that was true.
New England rushed for only 79 yards and May had a chunk of those.
But it was, it was all based on confusing, great May.
It's a brilliant club defense that McDonald has put together.
Five of the defensive starters have been draft choices over the last four years.
Six others picked up from other teams in various transactions.
And by the way, there are more kids as backups on that defense.
Only two of the top 14 Seattle defensive players make over $13 million.
After this week, we'll talk again about the value of the middlemen on teams, guys making
middle salaries, not star salaries.
To huge season for Seattle.
They began the year 61 to win the Super Bowl.
And they've done it.
They have very, very few free agents of any note over the entire team who will be a
threat to leave the team.
They will be dangerous again next year.
Cowboys organization, did you get the message watching the Super Bowl?
What do you want from your favorite restaurant?
Fantastic personal service, a cheery, welcoming, spotless atmosphere, and of course, great food.
The primest of beef, wagoo, and lamb, incredibly fresh seafood, lobster, salmon, shrimp, hall of
fame, food from a hall of fame restaurant.
Two locations of Bob's steak and chop-ups, the original Bob's on Lemon Avenue, and the
gorgeous new Bob's at Craig Ranch McKinney.
My wife marries the co-creator of Full Moon Healing Bomb.
And I guess I'm the reason this terrific cream was developed.
A few years ago, I began getting these huge ugly blood blotches just beneath the skin
of my arms and hands.
The condition is called senile purpora.
And no, you don't have to be senile to experience this embarrassment.
It happens as you age.
And then to cover it up, we begin wearing long sleeves even when it's hot.
It took two years working with an New Jersey lab to refine the all-natural ingredients
of Full Moon Healing, gently massage a very small amount into the skin, and within a
day, the blotches begin to fade.
Senile purpora usually takes weeks to disappear.
But this bomb cuts the timeline to about a week, and ordering so easy.
