The Lingo

Soccer jargon, decoded. Pull these out at your next watch party.

Offside
When an attacker is past the last defender at the moment the ball is played to them. Think: no cherry-picking.
Extra Time
If a knockout match is tied after 90 minutes, two 15-minute halves are added.
PK (Penalty Kick)
A free shot from 12 yards. Usually awarded for a foul in the box. Also how knockout ties are settled.
VAR
Video Assistant Referee. The replay booth. Can review goals, penalties, red cards, and mistaken identity.
Clean Sheet
A shutout. When a goalkeeper doesn't concede a goal.
Cap
A single appearance for the national team. A player with "100 caps" has played 100 games for their country.
Hat-trick
Three goals by the same player in one match. Rare. Celebrated.
Brace
Two goals in a match by the same player. Less rare than a hat-trick, still a big deal.
Stoppage Time
Minutes added at the end of each half to make up for injuries, subs, and time-wasting. Also called "injury time."
Nutmeg
Kicking the ball between a defender's legs. The most disrespectful move in soccer.
